The most recent modernization phase of the wire rod mill at Sterling Steel involved installation of a pre-finishing mill, using a Morgan Vee Mini-Block, a new water box and shear with utility systems and automation. The new mill configuration adds more stands to the mill for better drafting and is designed to improve finished product quality by providing a more uniform entry temperature, better control of the feed section into the No-Twist® mill as well as enhanced surface quality. The new shear improves cut length accuracy as well as decreases the amount of trimming to reduce yield loss. This paper explains the changes made in the mill and the features of the new equipment and automation.

Although the explosion-fatality record for the fiscal year 1944 showed considerable improvement over those of the preceding 4 years, it is still fur from creditable, and the coal-mining industry and agencies interested in the prevention of coal-mine accidents should not be satisfied until accidents from explosions and fires are eliminated. In view of present knowledge of the methods of preventing explosions and fires, such disasters are inexcusable and discredit the mining industry. Despite this knowledge, far too many coal¬mine operators and employees continue to follow procedures that have resulted in disasters in the past. Included in the appendix to this circular are a number of safety measures designed to prevent coal-mine explosions and fires and metal-mine fires. Their adoption is essential if explosions and fires are to be prevented, as certainly they should be. An epidemic of disastrous mine fires of electrical origin during the past 2 years emphasizes the need for better methods of protection of underground electrical circuits. At present, committees of mining-electrical engineers, electrical-equipment manufacturers' representatives, and others are cooperating with the Bureau of Mines seeking means to solve this problem.

Mining education in Australia has undergone another cyclical downturn over the past five years and several departments have been discontinued while others are still teetering on the brink of destruction. During this downturn Curtin UniversityÆs WA School of Mines (WASM) has managed to stay alive and well, but this has not been by accident. This paper outlines some of the strategies and experiences that have kept WASM in a strong position and offers hope to other departments and schools elsewhere that are still experiencing difficulty. This paper is also directed at all mining departments and schools that are certainly going to see it all happen again after the next mining boom turns to bust.

The Fimiston Open Pit (commonly referred to as the æSuper PitÆ) is a part of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) operation in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. KCGM manages the Fimiston Open Pit, the Mt Charlotte underground mine, the Fimiston Mill and the Gidji Roaster for its Joint Venture Owners, Newmont and Barrick Australia. KCGM produces up to 850 000 ounces of gold per year. The KCGM operations are located on the historical Golden Mile on the outskirts of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, about 600 kilometres east of Perth Western Australia. This traditionally underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding in excess of 50 Moz of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 g/t. This represents approximately ten per cent of the gold produced in Australia and one per cent of the gold produced in the world. The Fimiston Open Pit is essentially an aggregation of what were known as the Judd, South, Paringa, Croesus/Eclipse, Central, Brownhill, Drysdale, Morrison, North and Horseshoe pits into one continuous large-scale operation. The old Fimiston Underground Operations (included the Main, Croesus, Chaffers, Lake View, and Perseverance shafts) were also located within the area of the Fimiston Open Pit. The underground operations closed in 1992 due to high mining costs.

"The Institute of Applied Geology, Manila, Philippines, is jointly sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippines Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Programme (Special Fund). It provides, in its fourth year of operation, an interesting example of international cooperation in mineral development. Objectives include: (1) the training of mining engineers in modern techniques of mineral exploration; (2) assisting government and industry in discovering new ore deposits; and (3) providing the basis for the establishment of an economically oriented graduate school of geology at the University, the first of its kind in the country. Training of engineers requires roughly one full year, which is divided between academic study and actual field practice. Lecture and laboratory instruction include courses at university level designed specifically to up-grade those aspects of the geological sciences that are required by mining engineers now qualifying as mineral exploration engineers-economic geology, applied geochemistry, geo-physical exploration, petrology and structural geology. The field training involves direct participation in actual mineral exploration projects arranged with the co-operation of the Bureau of Mines and private interests engaged in mineral development and production. The system works well in practice, and the Institute staff and trainees were responsible for outlining new evidence of economic mineralization. It is also apparent from the application of the exploration methods available to the project -geological mapping, air photo interpretation, magnetic, electric, electromagnetic, self potential and gravity surveying as well as geochemical prospecting -that, under the humid, tropical, mountainous conditions in which the practical program was conducted, air-supported geochemical prospecting with attendant reconnaissance geological mapping affords the most economical and effective approach to mineral exploration for at least some of the deposits characteristic of the region."

Current longwall pillar design relies heavily upon past experience and many assumptions about pillar and entry response to longwall abutment pressures. Caving characteristics of the immediate and main roof strata are known to play an important role in the overall pressure redistribution, which determines the maximum abutment pressure, abutment pressure at the T-junction, and the width of influence zone. This paper presents the results of an extensive geomechanical study in a longwall panel at a West Virginia coal mine. The response of eight headgate pillars and the adjacent entries was monitored as the longwall face approached and passed by the instrumented locations. Overburden response to longwall mining was also monitored, and height of the highly fractured zone above the gob was determined by postmining drilling. Good agreement was observed between the measured stress changes and those computed using the known height of the highly fractured zone. The results provide a detailed picture of the response of overburden strata and chain pillars to longwall mining.

"As the bulk handling sector continues its transformation to Industry 4.0, the mining industry, and its harsh working and environmental conditions, provides a perfect spot to study the feasibility of remote analysis and maintenance of the components used for bulk handling. The most important and expensive tools have been adapted to the digital era in recent years, from remotely controlled haul trucks to monitored conveyor belts.However, the big items of the installations rely on smaller parts that have been leftaside, mainly due to the difficultyof adapting them to the Internet ofThings (IoT).The paradigmatic example is the lack of monitored rollers, while all the other components of the conveyorbelt installations (the belt itself, motors, drums, etc.) were monitored some time ago. The main problem is that a failure of a single roller can cause the stoppage of the entire conveyor, due to possible damage to the belt. Thus, the implementation of an integral monitoring system of all the components of the conveyor is a must.The research and development department of ULMA Conveyor Components has been working since early 2012 on the development of monitored rollers, testing all the problems until their final installation in different demanding conditions, from the extreme heat in Australia to the freezing cold of Norway. All the tests have been done under actual working conditions, in real installations and have provided valuable knowledge in the identification of problems, their solutions and the final advantages of a roller monitoring system.Background and current stateThe malfunction of a single roller in certain conveyor belts can force the standstill of the entire installation until its replacement, due to the risk of greater and more expensive failures, such as a rip in the belt. In the case of a bulk handling installation, where a continuous supply of material is necessary, an unexpected stop of one hour could result in huge economic losses."

The United States Bureau of Reclamation is constructing the $200 million Navajo Indian Irrigation Project to irrigate 110,000 acres of land on the Navajo Indian Reservation in northwestern New Mexico. Water from the San Juan River is impounded by Navajo Dam and will be conducted for 26 miles along a series of tunnels and canals to the area to be irrigated. Tunnel No. 3 is the third in a series of six tunnels along the route. Bids for construction of Tunnel No. 3 were received by the Bureau of Reclamation in September, 1970. Fluor Utah was low bidder at $8.7 million. Ten of the 12 bids were based on excavation by tunnel boring machine. The consulting firm of A. A. Mathews, Inc., was retained by the contractor to advise on geologic and rock mechanics conditions after support problems developed in the tunnel. Tunnel No. 3 is 15,264 feet long, has an 18 foot lined diameter, rises approximately one-half inch per 100 feet in the direction being excavated, and is 6,000 feet above sea level. There is one short curve in the alignment. Minimum concrete thickness is 12 inches with eight inches from 'A' to 'B' line making a pay diameter of 21 feet, 4 inches. The tunnel is supported with rock bolts and steel pans. Mole excavation began on May 13, 1971 from a blasted starting chamber. After 46 feet were excavated the mole was shut down and the trailing muck handling equipment was pulled into place. After advancing 1,700 feet in 34 days, unanticipated ground water conditions and ground support problems were encountered slowing moling so that the next 1,000 feet of advance consumed 97 days until December

Producing oil, gas, and coal in sufficient amounts to satisfy U.S. demands for fuels, electrical power, and chemicals promises to be one of the country's major challenges during the 1970's. Adding significantly to this challenge is the urgent task of satisfying soaring fuel and power demands without destroying the natural environment or jeopardizing long-range requirements for resources. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is engaged in a comprehensive program of research to help industry meet this challenge. This report reviews the aims of the research program and accomplishments in 1970; the first 11 sections cover coal programs, nine sect ions are then devoted to petroleum, and the concluding five sections deal with oil shale research. Figure 1 shows the nationwide distribution of Bureau of Mines energy research installations; Full addresses are given in appendix A. Many of the publications resulting from the Bureau?s energy research efforts are discussed throughout the report; others are listed in appendix B.

The Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) is situated 38 km north-east of Cloncurry in the Mount Isa – Cloncurry mineral district of northwest Queensland. The EHM orebody is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of one per cent copper, 0.5 g/t gold and 23 per cent magnetite, with current reserves of approximately 88 Mt.The copper concentrator is a single line plant with a nominal throughput rate of 1300 tonnes per hour. An average of 350 000 tonnes of concentrate is produced each year containing around 100 000 tonnes of copper metal and 120 000 troy ounces of gold.In December 2009, Xstrata Copper announced approval of a $589 M investment to extend the life of EHM to at least 2024, through the transformation of open pit mining operations to a major underground mine together with the construction of an associated magnetite extraction plant.The EHM magnetite plant extracts the magnetite from the copper concentrator’s tailings stream. It will produce approximately 1.2 Mt of magnetite concentrate per annum at full capacity for export to Asia, making EHM Queensland’s first iron ore concentrate exporter. Construction of the magnetite extraction plant commenced in July 2010 and was completed in January 2011.This paper gives an overview of the development of the EHM magnetite extraction plant flow sheet from the early mineralogy and laboratory test work through to the plant commissioning and early operation of the base plant. It has a major focus on the commissioning learnings from the plant start-up and includes a review of the operational performance of the plant versus original design and expectations.

This report reviews investigations to determine the fire hazard in coal mining when using flammable petroleum hydraulic oils to actuate mining equipment and summarizes research by the Bureau of Mines and industry on fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. Tests were established to evaluate fire resistance and the necessary characteristics to assure adequate service when fire-resistant fluids are used to replace petroleum hydraulic oils. The research was conducted in the laboratory and field trials under actual operating conditions in underground mines. Bureau of Mines Schedule 30 became effective December 17, 1959; the first approval was granted on February 18, 1960, and the twelfth was granted on March 17, 1961. The approvals include nine ready-mixed (by the producer) fluids and seven concentrates to which water is added by the user according to instructions from the producer. Seven synthetic-type fire-resistant hydraulic fluids submitted by two producers are also approved. Over 100 coal mines are now using water-in-oil emulsion-type fire-resistant hydraulic fluids in varying degrees from a trial in one machine to all the hydraulic equipment in an entire mine.

PART I. § 1. Introduction. After giving certain definitions, this paper gives the reasons which led to Roozeboom's form of the diagram of the freezing-point curves and general equilibrium of the iron-carbon compounds, steel and cast-iron ; and then those which led to replacing it with the present or double diagram, in which graphite is at all temperatures held to be the more stable and cementite the less stable (metastable) form of carbon. Next in § 10 the evidence supporting this greater stability of graphite is examined, then in § 17 that which seems to oppose it, and in § 22 a summary of the evidence is presented. The second part of the paper considers the topography of the graphite-iron diagram, rejecting summarily the solubility-lines based on the data of Charpy and Grenet and of Mannes-mann, on the ground that the data even on their face do not really point toward these lines, and that they are wholly incompetent to determine any solubility-lines whatsoever, because they report together with the dissolved carbon also an indeterminate quantity of cement-carbon, and because even such carbon as is actually dissolved, only in part represents the solubility of graphite, and in another and indeterminate part represents the solubility of cementite, or at least of carbon in presence of cementite as distinguished from graphite. It might be thought that graphite is but slightly soluble in iron, because of the absence of any suggestions of eutectoid graphite, corresponding to the eutectoid cementite of pearlite in very many cases in which the cast-iron seems to consist of ferrite and massive graphite only, and because of the micrographs of Goerens and Gutowsky. The value of mineral production increased 6.2% in 1976. With the exception of coal, practically all commodities registered an increase in production and value; most had an increase in unit value. Total value exceeded $1 billion for the first time. The increase in nearly all nonmetallic mineral production was a complete reversal of the 1975 experience. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble and was second in bauxite and scrap mica, third in oystershell, third in kaolin, and fifth in dimension limes-tone and dimension marble. International Trade.-The international trade passing through the Mobile customs district was valued at $2,524 minion in fiscal year 1976, up 20% from that of the previous year. Of the total value of trade passing through the district, 52% of the value of experts and 89% of the value of imports were handled through the port at Mobile. The major export Commodity was coal through McDuffie Coal Terminal which amounted to nearly 2.9 million tons, up from 2.4 million tons in 1975. This petroleum-engineering study of the Healdton oil field in Carter County, Okla., describes the geology and production history of that field and estimates the oil reserves that could be produced by efficient secondary-recovery methods. The Healdton field, in western Carter County approximately 20 miles west of Ardmore, Okla., was discovered in 1913 and was one of the early important oil-producing areas in the State. Although the volume of oil recovered from the Healdton sands has been comparatively high, studies show that a large reserve remains in the pressure-depleted sand, which can be recovered by efficient water-flood operations. In making this study of the Healdton-sand reservoir, the writers utilized many data already available in company and Government offices. Most of the fluid samples were collected by Bureau of Mines personnel and analyzed in the Bureau's laboratories at Bartlesville, Okla.; but other data, including logs, core analyses, and production records, were obtained from outside sources. These data were examined critically but were not verified, and possible errors in the original data may be reflected in the conclusions. In this study, attempts were made to consider only those aspects of the available information that would contribute to a clear and concise engineering report on the Healdton-sand reservoir. Other phases of the data, as well as those concerning associated reservoirs, were eliminated from consideration as being irrelevant to the particular problem. Cores and drill cuttings of the Healdton sands were analyzed and studied to determine the nature of the reservoir rocks. Analyses of samples of produced oil, water, and gas were studied to fix the different types, the limits of their occurrence, and the suitability of different waters for injection into the Healdton sands. Records of oil, gas, and water produced and of gas and water injected were studied to interpret the production behavior of the field and of certain individual leases. Theoretical calculations were made to predict the probable water-flood behavior and oil recovery, at constant water-injection rates, for individual sands on two leases.

From the first day of new miner training until the day they retire, mine workers will experience changes due to the normal aging process. It is an unfortunate fact of life that many age-related changes result in diminished physical, sensory, or cognitive capabilities. Of course, workers also gain a tremendous wealth of experience, knowledge, and insight as they age, making them a vitally important resource for their company. Effective leveraging of this precious resource requires both an appreciation of the changes that occur with age and an understanding of methods that can be used to reduce the injury risk that may result. The purpose of this training is to provide the information necessary to accomplish these objectives. Aging workers may not necessarily have a higher injury risk overall; however, the effects of a musculoskeletal injury (MSI) on older workers may be more extreme. MSHA data show that not only does the percentage of MSIs increase when workers are over age 30, so does the number of days lost per injury, as shown in the graph below [MSHA 2005]. [ ] Protecting the safety and health of aging workers requires matching the demands of the job to worker capabilities. This means reducing or eliminating risk factors for injuries, such as heavy lifting, awkward postures, static postures, repetitive movements, and/or vibration exposures. In other cases, it may mean improving visibility or streamlining processes. Designing jobs to accommodate the changing capabilities of older workers will not only reduce injury risk for older workers, it will have the added benefit of protecting younger employees as well.

the leaching of near-by rocks, had had no other result than to bring out from obscurity three certain features of practical lmport, all the labor of that controversy would have been well expended. These three points are : (1) a clear distinction between the vadose and the profound zones; (2) a determination of the manner in which the latter may be invaded by conditions of the former; and (3) an establishment of the general truth of the lateral-secretion theory when vadose conditions prevail, and of the. ascension-theory under profound conditions. In the practical consideration. of ore-deposits these generalizations are fundamental. Their wider application must be productive of great industrial advantages. Of first importance in the broader scientific survey of ore-genesis is the recognition of a sharp distinction between vadose and profound conditions. To many who listened to Professor Posepny's remarkable paper, read at the Chicago session of the Institute during the Columbian Exposition in 1893, this seemed, as Dr. S. F. Emmons has already observed, its most valuable and suggestive feature. Notwithstanding Posepny's implications to the contrary, and his vigorous berating of Sandberger's views, the immediate and lasting .effect of the . argument was really to strengthen greatly Sandberger's position. For it completely and sharply separated the lateral-secretionists from the ascensionists, raising the sphere of the former bodily above the line of permanent water-level and at the same time confining .the sphere of the latter to regions below that horizon. A little later, Professor Van Rise showed in some detail how meteoric waters may deeply invade the profound zone and carry vadose conditions into it. The zonal limitations of two great and apparently opposed agencies being thus definitely fixed, it is found that neither of the theories based thereon is susceptible of general application. If the generalizations of the lateral-secretionist be propounded solely for vadose conditions, we are able to agree with all of his more-important contentions; while there is general acquiescence in the views of the ascensionist if their application be restricted to the profound zone. The T. L. shaft of the Eureka Corp., Ltd., near Adams Hill, Eureka, Nev., was sunk in 1954 and 1955 to permit exploration and development of the lead-zinc-silver ore that had been indicated by drilling. This paper describes the sinking of the 4-compartment, vertical shaft to a depth of 1,127 feet and includes pertinent details of equipment, methods, and costs. A shaft crew of 10 men, supplemented by 13 hoistmen, topmen, carpenter, and shop crewmen, sank and timbered the 1,127 feet of shaft in 630 workdays. Total labor per foot of shaft was 107.95 man-hours. Supplies per foot of shaft included 20 pounds of explosives, 1.61 pounds of drill steel, and 200 board-feet of timber. Power consumption, including that required for pumping, averaged 3,726 kw.-hr. per foot.

With the shut-down in the mid-1970s of the last shaft furnaces in the Harz Smelter Plant the long tradition of the Primary Lead Smelter in Oker came to an end. A continuation of the concern was nevertheless possible as a result of the timely commencement with the development and construction of lead production from secondary raw materials. Then as today, the most essential secondary raw material is lead accumulator scrap with over 80 % of the raw material pallet. Already in the 1960?s a method of reclamation lead battery scrap was developed and successfully carr.ied out by Preussag. In 1983 this process was fundamentally modified, also for environmental protection reasons within the framework of a rehabilitation programme of the existing plant. Today Metaleurop's HarzMetall GmbH in Oker is equipped with a modern secondary lead smelter which includes all environmental protection installations required by law. Besides processing battery scrap, the. smelter is in a position to process a ?multitude of other lead bearing residues in an economically useful way, whose waste disposal would otherwise be impossible due to the ever-increasing environmental protection laws or only be achieved at great expense.
