"In this paper, some DVD-R discs have been selected for long time light exposure test and high temperature and humidity test. Generally, recordable media under long time light exposure maybe be defected seriously. If we use Jitter value 8% as a reference to determine the life time of DVD-R samples, some discs defect after 5 hours of light exposure while some discs can endure over 25 hours. Also if we use reflectivity 45% to determine the life time, some discs defect after 30 hours light exposure while some discs can endure over 40 hours. From our results, the good samples show good characteristics of PI error. The absorption spectrum of recordable media is a good reference to justify the quality of dye media. These results can be used to estimate the life time of recordable discs.IntroductionIn general, the life time of DVD-R with a layer of organic dye recording layer is required for preservation in decades. In addition to optical characteristics and thermal properties, we still need to consider the stability of the dye in recording media. The presentation of the color on organic dye is not only related to the material's property but also related to the light exposure. In this study, we focus on the absorption characteristics and reflectivity of organic dye in optical recording layer after light exposure. The optical properties of discs depend on the functional groups and molecular structure [1]. According to ""DVD Specifications for Recordable Disc (DVD- R)"", the reflectivity should higher than 40%. From measured reflectivity, we can confirm that the important issue is whether dye be affected by light exposure or not. Because each specific functional group absorbs the specific spectrum, we can check the characteristics of functional groups from their UV/Visible Spectra. We also use High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to detect the different components of dye on the recording layer [2]. The jitter value test is to test the error cause by digital signal of recording media. If we use jitter value 8% as a reference to determine the life time of DVD-R samples, the purpose of this study is to investigate the jitter values of recording media after high light exposure and high temperature/humidity test. The results of these test will be helpful for the development of long-life optical storage media."

The waste acid mixture whose main component is phosphoric acid, is discharged from the etching process in the liquid crystal production industry. In order to separate impurity acids from the phosphoric acid, trioctyl phosphate (TOP) is used as an extractant. TOP can extract acetic and nitric acids selectivity. The extraction and stripping operations are carried out for the acid mixture by beaker-scale experiments and countercurrent multistage operations with mixer-settler equipment. TOP selectively extracts the acetic and nitric acids in the acid mixture. From the results of the McCabe-Thiele analysis obtained by beaker-scale tests, the extraction for acetic and nitric acids are approximately 100%, respectively, by 6-stage extraction with a phase ratio (A/O) of 0.4. On the other hand, almost all of acetic and nitric acids are stripped with water from the organic phase by 4-stage stripping with a phase ratio (A/O) of 1.0. About 95% of acetic and 98% of nitric acids can be removed from the acid mixture without extracting phosphoric acid in case of the mixer-settler equipment operation. There are several steps such as slicing, lapping, chemical etching and mechanical polishing in the silicon wafer production process. The chemical etching step is necessary to remove any damaged layer caused in the slicing and lapping steps. The typical etching liquor is the acid mixture comprising nitric acid, acetic acid and hydrofluoric acid. The waste acid is treated by a neutralization method with a high alkali cost and balky solid residue. A solvent extraction method is applicable to separate and recover each acid. Acetic acid is first separated from the waste liquor using 2-ethlyhexyl alcohols as an extractant. Then, nitric acid is recovered using TBP (Tri-butyl phosphate). Finally hydrofluoric acid is separated with TBP solvent extraction. The expected recovered acids in this process are 2mol/L acetic acid, 6mol/L nitric acid and 6mol/L hydrofluoric acid. The yields of this process are almost 100% for acetic acid and nitric acid. On the other hand, it is important to recover and reuse the metal values contained in various industrial wastes from a viewpoint of environmental preservation. Most industrial products are made through processes to separate impurities in raw materials, solid and liquid wastes being necessarily discharged as industrial wastes. Chemical methods such as solvent extraction, ion exchange and membrane separation, and physical methods such as heavy media separation, magnetic separation and electrostatic separation are considered as the methods for separation and recovery of the metal values from the wastes. Some examples of the application of solvent extraction to the treatment of wastes such as Ni-Co alloy scrap, Sm-Co alloy scrap, fly ash and flue dust, and liquid wastes such as plating solution, the rinse solution, etching solution and pickling solution are introduced.

Clean processing of copper converter slags for reclaiming cobalt and copper could be a challenge. An innovative and environmentally benign approach for recovering metal values from such a slag was developed in the present work. Curing the slag with sulfuric acid, without re-smelting or roasting as currently practiced in the industry, made it amenable to leaching, and more than 95% of the cobalt and up to 90% of the copper was extracted, together with iron, by water leaching, leaving silica behind in a residue. Copper in the leach liquor was recovered by cementation with iron, and the dissolved iron crystallized as ferrous sulfate monohydrate. Cobalt in the pregnant solution rich in iron was recovered by either cementation or sulfide precipitation. Chemical and mineralogical characterization of the slag and its products were examined and compared to determine the nature of the changes occurring during curing and leaching. Operating variables were also investigated and optimized.

"Pegasus Gold's Beal Mountain Mine is located near the Continental Divide, SW Montana. Conventional surface mining utilizes crushing, heap-leaching, carbon absorption/desorption, electrowinning and refining to produce approximately 60,000 oz gold annually. A leach pad sits at 2,300 meters (7,500 ft) elevation. Winters are long and cold with average snow accumulations ofl-2 meters; temperatures fall below minus 40'C and wind chill temperatures below 70°C. The Beal Mountain staff has developed special tools and procedures for burying drip emitter lines, and managing the heap and process solutions to allow for uninterrupted gold recovery during the winter season. Management of water balance and spring runoff is critical to the operations' success, due to mountainous terrain, high precipitation and proximity to a fishery and elk herd. The mine has an extensive network of land application disposal (LAD) and stormwater control systems to assure environmental protection and regulatory compliance.ABSTRACT ONLY"

"Molten aluminum is routinely transported hundreds of miles to customers in large ""over-the-road"" crucibles. This is especially common for aluminum recycling organizations handling scrap and by-products. Receiving the aluminum in a molten form can save the customer time and money since in-house melting costs and capital equipment can be avoided. Additionally, the alloy can be on specification and nearly ready to use for the casting operation.A number of transport crucible designs are currently in use. The specifics of each design are based on the needs of the customer, the equipment used at both the producer and the consumer, and over-the-road transportation constraints. Crucibles are designed to maximize carrying capacity, and refractory life while minimizing heat flow and dead weight. These conflicting demands place difficult design criteria on the design engineer.This paper will review the basic advantages and disadvantages associated with molten metal transport, give examples of the design restrictions and examine several types design of crucibles currently in use."

In order to evaluate the grain refining and mechanical properties due to severe plastic deformation (SPD), this wrok was carried out. Convential rolling (CR) and cross roll rolling (CRR) as a SPD method were introduced, and NI-20Cr alloy as an experimental material was chosen. The materials were cold rolledto 90% in thickness reduction ans subsequently annealed at 700oC for 30 min to obtain the fully recrystallized microstructure. For annealed materials after cold rolling, electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis was carried out to investigate the grain boundary characteristic distributions (GBCDs). CRR process was more effective to develope the grain refinement relative to CR process, as a result, grain size was refined from 70 um in initial material to 4.2 um (CR) and 2.4 um (CRR), respectively. These grain refinements directly affect the mechanical properties improvement, in which microhardness and yield and tensile strengths were significantly increased than those of initial meterial.

The extraction performances exhibited by a phosphoric (D2EHPA), a phosphonic (Ionquest 801), a phosphinic (Cyanex 272) and a dithiophosphinic (Cyanex 301) acid derivative towards indium recovery from a diluted sulfuric solution are evaluated and compared. Equilibrium extraction isotherms were obtained. The chemical reactions involved and the approximate stoichiometry of the In(III) extracted species by the four ligands are presented and discussed. Stripping of In(III) from loaded D2EHPA and Ionquest 801 has been accomplished successfully, but has not been so effective from loaded Cyanex 301. Plots of %E vs. pH were established for D2EHPA, Ionquest 801 and Cyanex 301, denoting their behavior towards the extraction of similar mass concentrations of In(III), Fe(III), Fe(II) and Zn(II). Cyanex 301 is the least selective towards In(III), whereas D2EHPA and Ionquest 801, both for a pH = 0.5, do not extract Zn(II) at all.

"During the horizontal spin casting of rolls, vibrations and mould deformations seems to have a significant effect on the final quality of the product. Sources for vibrations can be found in the poor roundness and a static imbalance of the chill itself. The bending of the mould axis is also considered. Both, vibrations and axis bending, are used as an input for CFD simulations of the flow dynamics of the liquid metal inside the rotating cylinder. The aim is to study the feedback of the free surface behavior in terms of wave propagation and various wave shapes. Introduction The horizontal spin casting process (HSC) is a casting process that has several advantages over the traditional gravity casting processes. Centrifugally cast products have a high degree of metallurgical purity and homogeneous microstructure. A significant gain is observed for the rupture strength, the rupture strain, and the Young modulus. These properties naturally depend on the centrifugal force and thus, the best mechanical properties can be found at the largest distance from axis of rotation. However proper selection of the angular frequency has to be done in order to prevent the so-called ""metal rain"" i.e. metal droplets can fall down from the upper part of the cylinder due to a too weak centrifugal acceleration. In the same time excessive speeds can lead to the appearance of longitudinal cracks caused by the hoop stress in the initially solidified layer. From empirical knowledge other parameters have important influence on the casting products, it includes the pouring temperature, the pouring rate, the mould coating etc. Recently the presence of natural or forced vibrations have been identified as possible additional factors to be taken into account [1-2]."

Though the extraction of copper is well established, generation of sulfur dioxide (S02) is still a troublesome issue. Conventional processes are further challenged by the increasing amount of impurities in the concentrates. Direct decomposition of the metal sulfides into the metal(s) and elemental sulfur under concentrated solar radiation offers a promising path to solve both problems. Thermogravimetric measurements under inert atmospheres have shown that synthetic chalcocite or chalcopyrite yield copper at temperatures as low as 1773 K. Even though optimum reaction temperatures might be somewhat higher, such temperatures are straightforwardly accessible in solar chemical reactors. The absence of oxygen will reduce the extent of slag forming reactions and thereby alter the evaporation characteristics of volatile impurities such as arsenic or antimony. Chemical equilibrium calculations for a chalcopyrite-enargite feed, e.g., have shown that under inert atmospheres arsenic compounds are completely evaporated at temperatures above 1000 K and an effective separation of arsenic from the matte is expected. An important step towards a solar production of copper is the design and testing of prototype solar chemical reactors for this reaction. Numerical modeling is a key tool supporting a rational design but it requires data of the high-temperature properties that prevail in these processes. Development of techniques for determining the essential quantities such as decomposition rates or radiative properties at temperatures up to 2000 K is therefore a main activity in our laboratory in order to control and optimize the process. Though developed in the frame of high-temperature solar technology, the experimental techniques are also suited to advance the understanding of conventional high-temperature processes. "A novel ß-diketone modified silica gel was synthesized by a simple reaction. The prepared material was characterized by diffuse reflectance FTIR spectroscopy and it was used for the adsorption of heave metal ions in the industrial waste water. The main parameters affecting the sorption of heavy metal ions, including pH, water flow rate, and elution, have been investigated in detail. Under the optimized operating conditions, most of the targeted heavy metal ions could be removed. The material could be simply regenerated by hydrochloric acid solution. The method is rapid, selective, economic and applicable to the removal of heavy metal ions from industrial waste water.IntroductionToxic organic pollutants and heavy metals ions mainly from industrial activities such as plating, metallurgy and dyeing industries, are a threat to human health and the surrounding environment, because of their toxicity and persistence after being released into the natural environment [1]. These pollutants must be removed or degraded to an acceptable level, before being discharged to the receiving waters. Therefore, detection and determination of heavy metal ions in industrial waste water is very important.Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) is the most used technique for the determination of heavy metal ions because of its capability for rapid multi-element detection over a wide concentration range and with relatively low detection limits. Compared to other techniques such as neutron activation analysis (NAA), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), ICP-OES has the above advantages. Some constituents in industrial waters, such as organic compounds and inorganic salts, may cause matrix effects. In order to achieve accurate and reliable results, an efficient preconcentration of heavy metal ions and their separation from the matrix are usually required."

"This paper presents the results of the manufacturing ceramic pigments with spinel structure, using methods of synthesis of low temperature. In this work we obtained spinel structures type by the methods of Self-combustion, Coprecipitation, Microemulsion, Gel citrate and Pechini. These methods become an attractive alternative to traditional method (ceramic method), since we can work at a lower temperature, reducing manufacturing costs, lower fuel consumption, less wear on equipment and other environmental and economic implications. Also it is possible to have control over features such as stoichiometry, morphology of the products, reaction times and structures. The products obtained by these routes will be used in the manufacture of ceramic pigments and characterized using different techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-VIS spectrophotometry.IntroductionSpinels are ternary oxides AB204, where A and B are cations occupying tetrahedral and octahedral positions respectively. These oxides exhibit interesting electrical, magnetic and catalytic properties [1-4], depending on its nature, charging and intrinsic distribution of ions [5].The most widely used method to prepare spinels has been through solid state reaction, which consists of mixed oxides at high temperatures [6, 7]. In the last years, there have been a strong tendency to use chemical routes for the synthesis of crystalline ceramic particles at low temperatures [8,9]. Unconventional methods currently employed for the synthesis of complex oxides are Gel citrate method, Pechini, Spontaneous combustion, Microemulsion and Coprecipitation. Pechini method [10, 11], based on polymeric precursors, does not require high temperatures and allows stoichiometric control for greater reproducibility. This method involves the formation of a polymeric resin between a metal quelate and polyhydroxy acid of alcohol by polyestirification.Coprecipitation is important for many environmental problems related to water resources, including acid mine drainage, migration of radionuclides in waste repositories dirty, transport of contaminant metals in the industry, metal concentrations in aqueous systems and the technology of wastewater treatment. The coprecipitation process can vary in each case; the partition in the solid phase can be carried out by surface adsorption, ion exchange, surface precipitation, occlusion and formation of solid solution. The formation of solid solution is the result of structural incorporation of the marker in structural support sites resulting in a minor component in the solid solution with the host phase that has a very low solubility of pure solid [12]. Synthesis by gel citrate method allows the use of a route to obtain ceramic pigments from a very simple experimental system in which the stoichiometric control, the size and shape of the particles and the purity of the phases obtained can be controlled more accurately [13]."

The leaching experiment used by bacteria on the low grade sulfide copper ore which is difficult to leach was carried out. Some leaching bacteria which have good physiological and leaching activity were isolated and domesticated, and were adapted to leaching ore. The effective domesticated method was put forward. Some technological parameters such as ore acidification, potential controlling, leaching method, ore granularity, leaching acidity, leaching liquid quantity and acid consumption were obtained by column experiment and leaching ore in situ under the ore well. The results show it could leach 30.62% of copper from the low-grade sulfide copper ore within 24 weeks by column leaching method, and the bioleaching rate of copper is 22.83% by leaching in situ under the ore well in 8 months.

Many times, the maintenance professionals have been involved in changes to processes or systems. Often they rely on seat of the pants knowledge to determine whether or not they were successful. More often than not, once our attention has been turned to other endeavors, the initiative has floundered. This paper will describe those measures that can be most effectively used to track and manage the success of implementing an improved Work Management System. However, not only will the paper discuss traditional work indicators, it will also explain how to establish the behaviors in the work place that will ultimately ensure successful implementation. Combined with the discussion on indicators will be a discussion on how to tie them to bottom line results and display them in the form of a scorecard. Actual results will be discussed.

This paper describes the results of a study carried out to examine the feasibility of electrolytic recovery of silver from cyanide leach liquor generated from a Western Australian silver mine tailings using a novel high mass transfer electrowinning cell. The proposed circuit involves heap leaching and electrowinning in a closed loop. The filter-press-like closed electrode arrangement of the cell allowed much improved mass transfer of metal ions to the cathode surface, making direct electrowinning of metals from dilute solutions feasible. The tests were conducted both in the laboratory and at large scale using a prototype with ~1.0 m2 cathode area. The results showed that the recovery of silver from as low as 250 mg L-1tenor was feasible. The silver deposit produced with the prototype cell was non-adherent and powdery and could be readily removed from the closed cell. A system was developed so that silver powder was discharged continuously during the run.

Ammonia - ammonium sulfate solutions were sparged in a glass reactor with a SO2/O2 gas mixture (2% SO2 and 98% O2) to leach copper from pure chalcopyrite and chalcopyrite concentrate. The SO2/O2 mixture produces higher and faster extractions than O2 by itself. The effect of temperature, particle size and free ammonia concentration was investigated. The fastest and highest recoveries were obtained at 80 oC from a chalcopyrite concentrate with a d80equal to 13 m, with about 83 gpl free ammonia, an average pH equal to 8.75 and a stirring speed of 500 rpm. The extraction process was controlled by diffusion through a product layer, according to the shrinking core model, with an activation energy of 41 kJ/mole.
