"Control of thin films during the growth process is dependent on several parameters that are difficult to monitor, including flux of film material, pressure, substrate temperature, composition, and thickness. One means for easing this difficulty is to take advantage of emission spectra associated with the process and the film. For pulsed laser deposition (PLD), the ion cloud generated by the laser has characteristic emission spectra that can be used to control the flux and, hence, the film. For chemical vapor deposition, the species present can be determined using mass spectroscopy and specific peaks can be used to control the deposition. Raman spectroscopy affords the possibility of real-time control by sensing characteristic peaks associated with film composition and thickness. These spectroscopic methods offer a real-time alternative to process control that is very attractive, because of the ability to accurately control films to achieve the engineered structures and properties sought. Examples are presented to illustrate the capabilities of these methods for thin film preparation.IntroductionThe drive to reduce costs and improve efficiencies of operation sets the tone for much of research, basic or applied. Basic research is limited by the ability of sensors and associated instrumentation to measure parameters accurately and reproducibly. Applied research has the same limitations and also the added constraints of time and costs. Hence, there are strong incentives to explore means for refining existing sensors with respect to performance and cost, as well as finding new sensors and techniques for more accurately and rapidly measuring quantities of interest in experiments and in various processes."

"High-temperature superconductors have potential for a variety of applications such as power generators, superconducting magnets for mine sweepers or ship propulsion motors, and magnetic levitation transportation systems. Interest in the use of superconducting wires and tapes increased dramatically after the discovery of high-critical-temperature (high-Tc) oxide superconducting compounds, which offer operating temperatures above that of liquid nitrogen. Several techniques have been proposed to produce commercially viable high-Tc oxide based superconducting wires. One of the promising methods involves multi-pass powder-in-tube (PIT) wire drawing followed by rolling and heat treatment. This work focuses on the development of a numerical model to simulate the PIT drawing process for fabrication of long lengths of silver sheathed Bi-2212 superconducting wires. The finite element based model was used to predict densification of the oxide powder, wire drawing forces, and silver sheath thickness during drawing. A cap-type pressure dependent constitutive equation was implemented in the model to simulate the powder behavior. The model incorporated experimentally obtained material data for the silver and powder. Results indicate that powder densification is increased by decreasing the initial silver thickness and increasing the silver strength. Data from wire drawing experiments were used to verify model predictions. IntroductionSuperconducting wires and tapes can be used to carry large dc currents with no measurable loss due to resistivity. When used in superconducting magnets for power generators, motors, levitation devices, magnetic detectors, or energy storage devices, they could potentially result in significantly reduced energy losses. In the past, most prototypes were tested in liquid helium at 4.2K [1]. However, the necessity to provide liquid-helium cooling systems proved to be a serious limitation in commercialization. In 1986 high-critical-temperature (high-Tc) oxide superconductors were discovered [2], which could allow for higher operating temperatures above liquid nitrogen (77 K). Since then, both academia and industry have concentrated their efforts on the development of high-Tc oxide superconducting wires, tapes and coils. As yet, large scale fabrication of long lengths of these wires with the required current carrying capacity and mechanical properties remains an enormous challenge."

"Rare earth resources are strategic and non-renewable resources. But disordered exploitation on rare earth metals leads to resources waste, environmental pollution and ecosystem destroyed. In this paper, soil collected from garden was cultured in thermostated incubator. Adding exogenous rare earth to the soil and the effects of recombination action of rare earth lanthanum, cerium and yttrium on soil enzymatic activities were studied. The results showed that single metal La and Ce can increase urease activity, but Y inhibits its. Coexist La/Y or La/Ce in soil inhibit the urease activity, coexist Y /Ce or coexist three metals promote its. Single metal La, Y and Ce can promote catalase activity, and that of coexist three metals. Pairwise coexist La, Y, Ce in soil inhibit catalase activity. With certain concentration of rare earth recombination action, urease activity in soil has been very significant direct proportion to ionic impulse, but catalase activity been insignificant inverse proportion to its.1. IntroductionThe increase of rare earth element content due to anthropogenic inputs frequently takes place in agro-industrial areas, leading to soil pollution episodes that may cause serious environmental problems because of their potential toxicity to microorganisms, plants, animals and human beings [ 1]. China is abundant in lanthanides resources. Rare earth metals are used in many frontier technologies such as photic devices, magnetic materials, and fine ceramics, and the amount of the rare earth metals used in these industries has been increasing. In addition to their use in industry, rare earth metals are more widely applied to cropland as microelement fertilizers due to their ability to promote growth and productivity of some crops [2]. As a result, more and more rare earth metals are moving into the ecosystems. While a permanent contamination of soils results in populations of micro-organisms with high resistance to rare earth metals, a short-term burden of contaminants at high concentrations could exert inhibitory effects on microbial carbon [3]. They accumulate in soils, bioaccumulate in crops, and enter the food chain, causing a potential problem of rare earth metals environmental pollution in China [4]. This contamination may also severely influence organisms and soil activities [5]."

In this study, the leaching kinetics of rare-earth elements were investigated using HCl and HNO3 solutions. A standard crushed complex ore was utilized as raw material. The complex ore (particle size of under 54 μm) contains REE (Ce, La, Nd, Pr, etc.). Different leaching durations were selected for the kinetic studies. The highest leaching efficiency was obtained in HCl solution, and the leaching mechanism was identified to diffusion through a product layer. The rate constants of Ce, La, Nd, and Pr were calculated as 1.08 × 10−2, 0.86 × 10−2, 1.87 × 10−2, and 1.34 × 10−2 h−1, respectively.

"Raman spectroscopy as an instrumental technique for the determination of silicate structure is widely accepted. This method was utilized for analysis of structural modifications associated with the addition of network modifying species. Silicate melts are described by the extent of oxygen bridging. Therefore, understanding the effect different oxides have on modifying the silicate structure will provide valuable information regarding the removal of boron from silicon in slag refining processes. Samples ranging from CaO/SiO2 = 0.56-1.2 were evaluated with and without varying concentrations of B2O3. The addition of CaO to SiO2 revealed Q2 species constitute 45% of the Qn species and addition of B2O3 to the high concentration CaO system results in an increase in Q2 and a decrease in Q0 . The disappearance of the Raman band associated to the three-member ring in the low concentrated CaO system indicates boron addition and destruction of the ring.IntroductionExtensive studies on the structure of silicate systems have been performed using Raman spectroscopy with consensus on the Raman shift associated with different bridging oxygen units [1]. Most of these studies are motivated by the lack of a fundamental understanding of the processes involved in petrology. Due to this, an opportunity exists to build on the knowledge obtained from these studies and conduct more research on slag structures relevant to industrial applications, as these systems are often compositionally similar to magmatic melts. Raman spectroscopic studies of industrial slags will provide insight into the possible structural modifications necessary to enhance removal of impurity species from the metal phase to the slag phase."

This paper discusses modifications made to the original process equipment to overcome design flaws as well as future design changes currently under consideration.

Cominco Limited operates an integrated zinc-lead complex at Trail, British Columbia, Canada. Central to the successful operation of this complex is the treatment of zinc leach residues through the lead smelter. In 1997, Cominco started up a new lead smelter using KTVCET flash smelting, a state-of-the-art conventional slag fuming furnace, and a new drossing plant. The smelter has fully met the requirements for environmental performance, reduced energy consumption, and lowered labour costs. This paper provides a description of the new smelter and discusses the problems encountered during the start-up, as well as the solutions to those problems. Recent operating results are presented. "In this paper we describe an experiment that was recently performed on the IML-2 Space Shuttle mission in which the thermophysical properties of molten metals were measured using electromagnetic levitation. In the planning of these experiments calculations had to be performed to predict the levitation and stirring forces, heating rates, sample deformation, and internal flows within the sample. These predictive calculations were essential for both the planning of the experiments and for the re-planning of experimental runs during the actual Space Shuttle mission.Introduction""Materials Processing in the Computer Age"" involves the use of mathematical modeling to obtain a quantitative understanding of the phenomena that govern materials processing operations. Microgravity, or space shuttle experimentation represents a specific case in point here; the very high cost of the space shuttle flights, the very limited flight opportunities that are available, and the tight resources aboard a shuttle clearly mandate that these experiments be very precisely planned and that all possible opportunities for mathematical modeling be fully exploited.The purpose of this paper is to present the results of calculations performed for the planning of a space shuttle experiment involving electromagnetic levitation and wherever possible present a comparison of the computational predictions with both experimental measurements and asymptotic analyses. Finally we shall seek to discuss the practical implications of both the computational methodologies and the potential experimental findings."

Recovery of gold from refractory ores was studied by pressure oxidation as the method of ore pretreatment followed by bromination of oxidized residues. Three different ores were examined, Au-Ag, Au-Ag-Te, and Au-silver free ore. Pyrite was the major host mineral for gold in these ores. The effect of pressure oxidation parameters (temperature, pressure of oxygen, time, and pulp density) on subsequent bromination under standard conditions was examined. Bromination of residues produced under standard pressure oxidation conditions was examined as a function of: temperature, bromine and sodium bromide concentration, and time. Recovery of gold on activated carbon, from the pulp after bromination, was studied too. Recovery of gold from silver containing ores was lower (87-91%) than the recovery of gold from silver free gold ore (97%). In each studied case, the presence of activated carbon in the pulp further increased the recovery of gold.

"The control of inclusion elimination is getting more and more important to obtain clean steel. This paper presents a methodology under development for predicting cluster growth and elimination in ladle - RH system. The first key point is to express the collision efficiency, which is very specific for alumina cluster due to the non-wetting fluid. Second, a description of the two-phase flow in the system is necessary. In our calculations with Fluent CFD package and Lagrangian approach for bubbles, bubble growth is implemented, which improves the predictions. Using global reactor decomposition makes possible the prediction of the time evolution of cluster distribution. Important effect of fractal dimension is demonstrated.IntroductionElaboration of new steel grades requires not only to have a high purity in terms of C, O and N content but also to eliminate particles such as alumina or slag droplets. Flow optimisation making easier inclusion elimination is then a key figure to satisfy cleanliness requirements. Mathematical models of flow and inclusion behaviour are widely used for this purpose (1, 2). But having a predictive tool is still a challenge, because the number of phases is important in steelmaking industry: liquid steel, slag layer, bubbles and inclusions (with a large range of composition and rheology). The paper presents the methodology which is developed at IRSID to predict oxygen content evolution during RH degassing.The main mechanisms which have to be considered are :-inclusion growth by turbulent aggregation of elementary inclusions (keeping in mind that liquid steel is a non-wetting medium for inclusions); the difficulty is to express collision efficiency for alumina particles,-inclusion removal by flotation; the difficulty for alumina clusters stems from the complex morphology of particle; fortunately, the use of fractal concept makes it possible to cope with this problem.The paper describes the general modelling of inclusion removal taking into account the previous mechanisms. Hydrodynamic parameters are obtained by means of Fluent CFD package and a specific coding is developed for cluster growth."

Two electrochemical processing methodologies have been used to electrogenerate bromine-laden solutions for gold-leaching purposes. In the first process, a laboratory-scale cell in which the anode and cathode compartments were separated by a cation-exchange membrane was employed. The bromine produced by electrolysis of a 4% bromide solution was used to leach gold from a low-grade ore. The pregnant leach solution was then returned to the cell to recommence the cycle. High current efficiencies (90-93%) were maintained over six cycles. In the second process, an undivided hypochlorite generating cell (Chloropac"') was used to generate bromine from a simulated leach solution. Electrolyses were performed on a pilot-scale (100-150 gallons) with solutions containing different levels of bromide ion. The current efficiencies were also high (80-90%) and unaffected by the bromide concentration (over the range 2.5-5%) provided the electrolysis was run to low conversion « 15%). The Chloropac module was capable of delivering 0.6 kg bromine per hour at a power cost of $0.09 per kg. Using these figures, a detailed economic assessment for a 1000 metric tonnes (MT) per day gold ore processing plant was made. Electrolytic regeneration of bromine in a gold leach/recovery circuit dramatically improves the process economics over cyanidation.

In terms of special resources with iron, niobium and rare earth coexisting in Baiyuneboite, the new smelting technology of ferrocolumbite was studied. Reduction experients for the Baiyuneboite and explores ore phase change of Baiyuneboite in the process of reduction was conducted with graphitic carbon as the main reducer and a temperature below 1000 ℃. Moreover, it studies the influence of reducer, roasting temperature and grind fineness on the reduction as well as focuses on the evolution course of iron phase. Through the analysis on in-situ XRD of the raw ore and carbon addition ore, it also develops microstructure change rules of Fe ore phase and ore phase of paragenetic elements for composite ore(Ca, Si, Nb, F) in the process of reduction roasting. In addition, the impacts of temperature on the reduction process are also discussed. With regard to minerals of different particle sizes, the thesis will explore their ore phase changes and microstructures after 10 hours’ reduction under 900 ℃.

A membrane based mixed extractant process was developed for selective removal of copper from waste acidic cupric chloride etchant solutions found in printed wire board manufacturing. The process uses a mixture of Adogen 381 (tri-isooctylamine), MOC®-45 (ketoxime) and MOC® 55TD (aldoxime) in a kerosene diluent. The mixed extractants recover the copper from a hydrochloric acid medium and transfers it to a sulfuric acid medium. The process also utilizes unique wetted membranes to separate the aqueous and organic phases. The driving force for these membranes is not pressure but the difference in surface tension between the two phases. By using these membranes, complete phase separation results. There is no physical entrainment contamination as found in conventional systems. The only cross contamination is the solubility concentration of one phase in the other. This however is less than 10 mg/l.

The photochemical reactions of cyanide ion induced by light were investigated in the presence or absence of a titanium(IV) oxide semiconductor photocatalyst. The light sources employed were the sun and arrays of either mercury or fluorescent (cool white) lamps. The results obtained verify that cyanide decomposes much faster when TiO2 is present in the solution and that it is first oxidized to cyanate. However, contrary to the previous studies, it is established that cyanide is subsequently further oxidized via nitrite all the way to nitrate irrespective of the light source. As expected, the rates of the oxidation processes decrease with the illumination source utilized in the following order: Hg-lamps > sunlight > fluorescent lamps. As nitrate is a significantly less hazardous contaminant than cyanide, complete photocatalytic oxidation of cyanide to nitrate may be a viable method for decontamination of cyanide wastes. Contrary to previous claims, we find that cyanide is slowly photochemically decomposed even in the absence of TiO2. For example, with the mercury lamps as the light source, in two hours, cyanide concentration decreases to essentially zero; up to 7% was converted to cyanate and the remainder to unidentified products.

"We formulate the mathematical solution to late-stage multi particle diffusion in finite systems. The transition from finite system behavior to that for an infinite system is established. Large-scale simulations are reported regarding the dynamics of phase coarsening. Even in the case of a small volume fraction (Vv = 10-4), the particle size distribution is broader than that for the well-known Lifshitz-Slyozov limit at zero volume fraction. We also report the first simulation studies of extremely low volume fraction, for which corresponding experiments, as well as other simulations, do not exist at present for comparison. However, in the case of moderate volume fractions (Vv = 0.1), the fiucutations in the volumetric growth rate of particles are extracted from our simulations. These simulations provide additional insight into the statistical nature of diffusion interactions, including multiparticle stochastics during microstructural evolution.IntroductionPredicting microstructure evolution in alloys remains one of the cornerstones of materials science. Phase coarsening is a common process in microstrucural evolution that leads to a decrease in the excess total interfacial energy of the system. The system typically consists of separate and identifiable units, or domains, such as second-phase particles distributed in a matrix. During phase coarsening, larger particles grow at the expense of small particles. Over time, this ""competition"" results in an increase in the average size of the particle population, and in a concomitant decrease in the number of particles.Particle size and microstructure of many cast alloys depend on similar coarsening processes. Indeed, properties of these materials, such as strength, toughness, ductility, and electrical conductivity, depend on the material's average particle size and particle size distribution (PSD). Understanding and controlling microstructures in two-phase systems are clearly of widespread technological importance."

Valorization of the electrical arc furnace oxidizing slag by coke was carried out by the reduction of iron oxide in the slag. Since the reduction of iron oxide by solid carbon is an endothermic reaction, supply of heat energy is required. In addition, slag has a low thermal conductivity; traditional fuel injection is not suitable for this reaction. Microwave can be used to supply heat energy to the system. Commercial oxidizing slag was reduced by coke under the microwave irradiation (1.7 kW, 2.45 GHz). The maximum recovery ratio of iron was 87%. In addition, slag composition modification was attempted to use the remaining slag for a mixture in cement clinker. Free-CaO in the slag was successfully suppressed, and the use of the remaining slag as a potential mixture was confirmed.

"Tue sulphatization of zinc concentrate produced from heated zinc concentrate of Um Ghieg area, eastern desert by ammonium sulphate as sulphatizing agent is carried out at different conditions to achieve the appreciable formation of soluble sulphates. The maximum zinc recovery as soluble sulphate equfils to 95% upon using 1.5 stoichiometry ammonium sulphate at 600 °C for one hour. Tue obtained leached zinc sulphate solution is subjected· to purification process to prepare high pure zinc metal and zmc compounds such as pure zinc sulphate, zinc caibonate and zinc oxide. The products obtained are analyzed chemically and identified by X-ray analysisTue mechanism and kinetics of the sulphatization process of zinc concentrate are considered where the activation energy is calculated and equals to 33.3 K.J.mol""1 A process flowsheet for the overall sulphatization process of zinc concentrate by ammonium sulphate is proposed.IntroductionConsiderable reserves of zinc ores are present in Um Ghieg area eastern desert, Egypt. The possibility of extraction zinc from these ores and preparing its valuable compounds by choosing a more feasible technology become of vital importance. An attention is focused on the sulphatizing roasting processes (1-9) to achieve the appreciable formation of soluble sulphates. Previous publications are reported in our division by El. Tawil and others (10-16) using ammonium sulphate as sulphatizing agent for the successful treatment of nonferrous bearing materials.Therefore, the present work aims to study the different factors affecting the sulphatizing roasting process of local zinc coocentrate by anunonium sulphate to extract completely zinc and preparing its main compounds. Tue mechanism and kinetics of the different chemical reactloos that 1ake place in the process are considered."

Iron removal by precipitation as jarosite from Fe-Ni-Co sulfate solutions, (synthetic or real, resulting from laterites leaching) has been investigated. Precipitation was carried out at 95 C, and at an initial pH 1.6, which was either kept constant with CaCO3 or Li2CO3 additions, or left to drift with the evolution of the reaction to lower values. The precipitation of K-, NH4- and Na- jarosite was initially examined using synthetic solutions. In all cases, hydronium ions were incorporated into the precipitate as well. Residual iron in solution was lower (0.2-1 g/1) and equilibrium was achieved faster (within 4-8 h) when precipitating K¬jarosite at constant pH, using CaCO3 for neutralization. Nickel and cobalt losses were small. Na- jarosite precipitation was also studied from real solutions with high initial iron content, under constant pH=1.5, controlled with CaCO3 additions, and it was shown that low residual iron concentration in solution (0.3-0.5 g/1) can be achieved again, with relatively small nickel and cobalt losses. The thickening and filtration characteristics of the precipitates were excellent in all cases examined.
