Mining subsidence over shallow abandoned coal mine workings is unfortunately not an uncommon experience in the coalfields of North America and there is a significant knowledge and literature base addressing the phenomenon and related issues. From time to time, however, a case history arises which is outside the more routine occurrence. This paper addresses one such case and presents an overview of a subsidence Event above abandoned coal workings, which badly damaged a two-story High School building. The subsidence at the Cape Breton & Victoria Regional School Board (CBVRSB)'s MacDonald High School in Dominion, N.S., Canada on October 30, 2002 led to a detailed investigation. It was concluded that the ground movement and associated building damage had been caused by mining subsidence in underlying old underground coal mine workings of the 1890s, only 150 ft deep at the School. The Event was not isolated and a similar but smaller event happened nearby a few months later. The paper describes the events and summarizes the subsequent investigations and findings. The 17-year old High School building was eventually demolished.

The paper defines the various operational advantages associated with the use of cribless tailgates during longwall extraction and considers the associated ground control issues that need evaluating to ensure a successful outcome. Reference is made to longwall mines in Australia currently using cribless tailgates and the geotechnical and ground support factors that allow them to do so This includes the nature and behaviour of the roadway roof the stability of the chain pillar and also the type and timing of installed support A specific case history from a colliery in NSW will he referred to whereby heavy standing support was replaced with lower density tensioned cables as routine TV secondary support, which resulted in both improved TG roof conditions and a significant cost reduction. The conclusion will be drawn that cribless tailgate roadways can potentially he used in many environments either due to the existence of highly competent immediate roof conditions or through the appropriate application of active reinforcing support measures in less competent conditions. Use will he made of Strata Engineering?s roof behaviour and stability model in demonstrating the various concepts involved.

Cutter roof failure is a specific type of ground control problem which frequently results in massive roof failure. It is a cannon occurrence in coal mines of the Northern Appalachian Coal Sasin, causing delays in production and posing a safety hazard to mine personnel. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the causes of cutter roof failure togain a basis from which to prevent its occurrence and to support such roof when failure does occur. Research conducted in a coal mine of central Pennsylvania has revealed a correlation between the occurrence of clastic dikes and fonation of cutter roof failure. Inmine mapping of ground conditions showed an increase in roof failure in areas of high frequencies of clastic dikes. Rock pressure monitoring around clastic dires registered the greatest amount of roof loading near the inter- section of dikes with the rib. Load cells measurim horizontal pressure changes in the roof indicated that the greitest pressure changes were occurring perpendicular to entry headings when clastic dikes were present. Analysts of rock pressure nwnitiring shows that the roof behaved as two cantilever beams when severed by a clastic dike. Additional roof supports such as trusses and cribbing were found to effectfvelv suooort the roof in areas of clastic dikes and prevent cutter roof iailure. However, there lnethads were only successful when employed shortly after mining.

This paper is presents a summary of recent investigations into fracture and caving about longwall panels. The results of these investigations indicate that rock failure initiates well ahead of the longwall face. Rock fracture typically forms in response failure through the material and bedding planes. Tensile fractures also form in massive units. These fracture patterns typically create a fracture network which determines the caving characteristics encountered at the faceline. The action of longwall face supports under such conditions is to maintain confinement to the fractured ground and develop a consistent caving line, The confinement developed above the canopy under these conditions can be variable on a shear by shear basis and the operational face support procedures play an important role in stability about the face area.

When coal seam is under the integral thick sandstone (or conglomerate), the structure of thick sandstone is integral and its strength is rather high. After coal is extracted, the roof is hanging and caving is difficult. When the method of full caving is adopted in the longwall working face to control this kind of hard and difficult caving roof, the effect of roof-controlling affects directly the production and safety. In China Datong Coal Mines the extracting coal deposit is Datong Jurassic period. Most of the roof is sandstone and conglomerate. It is hard and difficult to cave. Having used special hydraulic power supports and other special ways to deal with the roof, the hard and difficult caving roof has been controlled.

Preventing pillar line squeezes, massive pillar collapses, and coal pillar bumps is critical to the safe and efficient recovery of coal during retreat mining operations. To help prevent these problems, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) computer program. ARMPS calculates stability factors (SF) based on estimates of the loads applied to, and the load-bearing capacities of, pillars during retreat mining operations. The program can accommodate various retreat mining scenarios including angled crosscuts, varied entry spacings, barrier pillars between the active section and old (side) gobs, and slab cuts in the barriers on retreat. It also features a pillar strength formula that considers the greater strength of rectangular pillars. The program may be used to evaluate bleeder entry designs as well as active workings. A data base of 130 pillar retreat case histories has been collected across the United States to verify the program. It was found that satisfactory conditions were very rare when the ARMPS SF was less than 0.75. Conversely, very few unsatisfactory designs were found where the ARMPS SF was greater than 1.5.

Good planning is critical to operating a safe and efficient mining operation. As the shallow coal scams become depleted, attention turns toward deeper mineable seams or remnant coal reserves. It is becoming more common to place a mine in a scam that is below or adjacent to existing mine workings. Significant research has been conducted regarding the ground control issues of multiple scam mining. However, safety aspects of the operation may not be fully considered. Safety issues include working below or adjacent to a flooded mine and controlling gas Communication between the active mine and the nearby mine. This paper will discuss the safety issues a mine operator should consider when working under or adjacent to mines that may be flooded with water.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has modeled yield pillars to determine the effects of reinforcement techniques on pillar performance. Model pillars with width-to-height (w/h) ratios ranging from one to four were reinforced using advanced lateral support systems. To evaluate reinforcement and pillar performance, the model pillars were strained up to 18.6 pct in compression. The results show that the reinforcement had a significant effect on the postfailure characteristics of the pillar but had only a small effect on it's maximum failure strength. Pillar residual strengths increased up to 10 times, while the energy capacity increased by a factor of three depending on the reinforcement method. At maximum deformation, the residual strengths of several types of reinforced specimens exceeded the maximum compressive strength up to 2.5 times and resulted in an increasing positive postfailure stiffness. Test results, data analysis, and application of the results to underground mining are discussed.

Retreat longwall method with re-use of gateroad has been traditionally employed in Japan, mainly because of the advantage of higher recovery. But the Miike Colliery has newly introduced the interpanel-pillar system to maximize the production efficiency. The Department of Mining, Kyushu University, in cooperation with the Miike Colliery and the Coal Mining Research Center (CMRC), has conducted research into the optimum design of interpanel-pillar, because this system may be adopted in other coal mines as well. Field measurements of the deformation of the gateroads and of stress distribution in the pillar show that the designed layout of the panel and pillar and the supporting system are proper from the viewpoints of gateroad maintenance and spontaneous combustion in the pillar.

The potential influences of mining subsidence on structural stability, integrity and functionality of guyed tower structures have not been systematically studied before. This paper presents a ease study where a guyed steel tower of a telecommunication company was mined under by a longwall operation. Prior to mining, every aspect of the subsidence influences to this structure was studied. The pre-mining assessment indicated that the structure could experience vibration problem in the second half of the dynamic subsidence process. Bawd on the study, a simple mitigation measure was recommended and implemented and the structure was successfully protected.

The Cayuga Mine, a deep rock salt mining, operation, changed from a standard room and pillar mine design to a yielding pillar/pressure arch design five years ago. In general the roof conditions improved. However, entries adjacent to the abutment pillars continued to fail. It was noticed that where abutment pillars were accidentally "notched" (by driving cross- cuts one cut into the pillars), the abutment entries had better roof conditions than where there were no "notches". Experiments with intentionally notched abutment pillars showed that notching did improve abutment entry conditions. During the past four years notch configuration has been varied to suit local ground conditions. Recently, "pre-cutting" of notches has proven itself as a means of protecting abutment entries under severe ground conditions. As an added bonus, the notches improve productivity by providing more places to work and reduce costs because it is not necessary to bolt the notches.

The development of a softwood alternative to the hardwood chockpiece used to build the waste-edge breakers commonly incorporated in gateroad packs is described. The results of laboratory tests on softwood prototypes and two underground trials are presented. The results of the last trial suggest that a viable alternative chockpiece has been designed, offering advantages over availability of wood, weight and given reduced wood content, price.

Goedehoop Colliery in the Witbank Coalfield of South Africa produces some 8 million tonnes of coal from fully mechanised room and pillar mining methods, using resin anchored bolts as roof support. Investigation of the quality of the installed bolts resulted in the finding that it was possible to pull out fully encapsulated roofbolts. This led to a drive to improve the quality of installation by making it easier to install a roofbolt correctly and more difficult to install incorrectly, whilst at the same time achieving high bond strength. The method of installation which was investigated, developed and implemented is known as 'spin to stall.' The roofbolt is pushed through the resin capsule to the top of the hole and then spun to mix the resin, until the increasing resistance to rotation exceeds the breakout limit on the bolt torque nut. The nut then runs up the bolt thread and is tightened to the roof as the drill stalls. This procedure is simple and avoids human factors such as non adherence to 'spin' and 'wait' times which contribute to poor installation with conventional methods. However spin to stall installation has been avoided in the past because of concerns over damage to the resin bond. This paper reports on the efforts made to investigate and understand the factors involved, and the progress made in overcoming the problem of resin damage so that the advantages of this installation method can be realised.

Four case studies of special geomining conditions from Indian coalfields are discuss- ed. These cases relate to (a) pillar extraction in two seams simultaneously under a difficult roof (Satpura I and II). (b) depillaring in an inclined seam resulting in rib instability (Sudamdih), (c) depillaring resulting in floor lift and side spalling (Jarangdih) and (d) contiguous pillar extraction under hard incavable strata. Solutions to these problems are given based on rock mechanics principles involving stress analysis, classification techniques, past experience and engineering judgement.

Since the inception of a qualitative pressure arch theory by Haak4 in 1911, much work has been done in an effort to apply this concept to underground mining. It has been used in both longwall and room and pillar mining to determine roadway and pillar stability (with varying degrees of success). This paper presents a summary of a case study where the pressure arch concept was extended in a totally qualitative manner to define the source of roof control problems in the mains of a Pennsylvania mine. It was concluded that, due to the method of mining employed, a pressure arch formed over a portion of the entries, and the high abutment stresses accompanying it resulted in extreme roof deterioration. The following discussion will include a general presentation of the arching mechanism, the physical response of the roof strata under mining-induced abutment stresses (both from the case study and in general), a computer simulation of ground stability under both "normal" and "abutment" stress conditions, and finally, potential means of alleviating such conditions.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Cyprus Shoshone Coal Corp. conducted a study of deformation mechanisms around a longwall gate-road system in an underground coal mine. Of particular interest was roof deformation over the headgate entry. The strata above and below the coal seam are very weak, carbonaceous mudstones that have planes of weakness oriented along the bedding. Visual observations of previous gate roads over several years suggested that deformation was time dependent and resulted in creep along joints or crack growth. Instruments were installed at a test site to measure deformation around the entry, strew changes in the pillar, and loads transferred to support systems. Multipoint extensometers, instrumented bolts, instrumented trusses, biaxial stressmeters, borehole pressure cells, and single-point extensometers were installed. Monitoring continued until the longwall face passed the test site by 38.7 m (127 ft). Results show that fracture zones arched over the entry from both ribs, most bolts and trusses were loaded past their yield point, and the largest change in secondary principal stress was almost horizontal in the pillar. Displacement measurements in the roof showed classic primary creep.

A floor-bearing capacity test apparatus was designed and constructed to determine the true bearing capacity of soft floor materials beneath coal pillars or longwall face supports. The apparatus has been employed in entries up to eleven feet in height. Results of in-mine floor-bearing capacity tests suggested that the ratio of the soft fireclay thickness to the bearing plate width and the moisture content in the fireclay were the most critical parameters affecting the ultimate bearing capacity. Foundation engineering principles were applied to interpret the field test results to estimate the floor-bearing capacity beneath longwall face supports.

This paper presents a retrospective assessment of ground control research and its successful application by CONSOL Energy over the past 25 years. Recognizing the need to improve the understanding of coal pillar design mechanics under shallow, medium, and deep covers, an extensive underground coal pillar instrumentation program was initiated in the mid 1980s. Combined with sophisticated numerical modeling technique and laboratory tests, results from this instrumentation program were used to advance the concept of coal pillar design and to demonstrate that numerical modeling can be used to predict in situ coal pillar strength, especially under non-ideal conditions where interface friction and roof and floor deformation are the primary controlling factors. To evaluate the impact of longwall mining, a 10-year subsidence research program was initiated in 1986 that encompassed surface, subsurface, and underground measurements, as well as a sophisticated numerical modeling technique. Results from the research revealed that interface friction and shearing between rock layers within the overburden had a profound effect on surface subsidence development and the resulting strain. Recognizing the impact of horizontal stresses on CONSOL?s mining operations, extensive horizontal stress measurements were conducted using the USBM Borehole Deformation Gage and the CSIRO Mininfrac system in the mid to late 80s. Roof extensometers and CSIRO HI Cells were used to measure roof displacement and roof stress concentration in longwall headgates and tailgates, which resulted in the definition of right-hand and left-hand longwall panels. Pillar design modifications, combined with cable bolt application and innovative standing support installation, were then successfully employed to mitigate horizontal stress impact on the right-hand longwall headgates and left-hand longwall tailgates. An in-house floor bearing capacity test apparatus was fabricated and employed underground to determine mine-specific floor bearing capacities which, along with other geotechnical parameters, were then used in the mine-specific shield design. To promote caving of thick, massive sandstone immediately behind longwall face supports and to improve face conditions, the hydraulic fracturing technique was successfully employed by CONSOL to pre-fracture the sandstone prior to longwall mining. Face monitoring and numerical modeling confirmed the effectiveness of the hydraulic fracturing technique. A roof geology reconnaissance program was initiated by CONSOL in the early 1990s to improve roof control, safety, and production. Information obtained from the reconnaissance program was used successfully to guide mine planning decisions and daily roof support practices.

Einführung in die Problematik 1.1 Die Bedeutung des Schildausbaus Seit fast 30 Jahren ist die Konkurrenzsituation auf dem Primärenergiemarkt der Bundesrepublik Deutschland durch einen von Erdöl and Erdgas geführten and insbesondere gegen die Steinkohle gerichteten Verdrängungswettbewerb gekennzeichnet, der den Steinkohlenbergbau zu tiefgreifenden RationalisierungsmaBnahmen zwang. In diesem Zusammenhang kam es Anfang der 70er Jahre zur Einrührung des Schildausbaus, der eine erhebliche Produktivitätssteigerung in den Strebbetrieben zur Folge hatte and damit die Uberlebenschance des Steinkohlenbergbaus in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland enorm verbesserte. Der Grund hierfdr lag darin, daB der Schildausbau im Vergleich zu dem vor ihm eingesetzten Rahmen- and Einzelstempelausbau eine wesentlich hdöhere Ausbauleistung erbrachte, weil er sich weit weniger empfindlich gegen Hangendausbruche and aus dem Alten Mann hereinbdschende Bruchberge erwies. So erklärt sich auch die stürmische Entwicklung and die schnelle Verbreitung des Schildausbaus. Bereits 1975 stammte rd. 50 % der Fdrderung aus Schildstreben, 1990 waren es fiber 75 % and heute sind es fiber 90 %. 1.2 Die Staubentstehung beim Schildausbau Die Erfolge des Schildausbaus sind unbestritten. Jedoch nahmen :nit seiner Einführung die Probleme der Staubentstehung and Staubbekämpfung im Vergleich zum Ein zelstempel- and Rahmenausbau erheblich zu. MaBgebend dafür sind hauptsächlich folgende Gründe: - Abbau von dozen nit gebrächen, weichen Hangendschichten, die erst durch Schildausbau abbaubar wurden, - Zerkleinerung des auf den breiten Kappen aufliegenden Bergematerials infolge der höheren Ausbaustiltzkrafte des Schildausbaus, Zermahlen der sick in die Spaltabdichtungen hineinarbeitenden Bergestückchen, - Erhöhung der Wettergeschwindigkeit infolge der durch die Baufarm des Schildausbaus bedingter. Verkleinerung des Strebquerschnitts verbunden mit der Aufwirbelung and Aussichtung von Staub, - Aufwirbelung von bereits abgelagertem Staub im Bruchraum beim Hereinbrechen der Dachschichten. Die genannten Gründe treten zumeist nicht in jedem Abbaubetrieb gleichzeitig auf. Sie rind vielmehr u.a. abhängig vom Ausbautyp, von den Gebirgsverhältnissen and von der Abbaugeschwindigkeit. Trotzdem ergeben sich beim Vorrücken des Ausbaus in der Regel hohe Staubkonzentrationen, die deswegen besonders kritisch sind, weil es sich um quarzhaltigen Feinstaub handelt, der besonders gesundheitsschädlich ist.
