The Paupers Dream Property is located in the northern Boulder Mountains, southwestern Montana, 30 km southwest of Helena. The property is situated in the central portion of the Butte-Helena gold belt, a NE trending lineament marking a zone of recurrent, late-Cretaceous to mid-Tertiary volcanic activity. Geology consists of a plutonic basement of late-Cretaceous quartz monzonite overlain by a pre-volcanic basal conglomerate and a complex sequence of Oligocene rhyolitic volcanics. Gold mineralization occurs in fracture-controlled quartz veins, silicified stockwork, and brecciated shear zones as auriferous pyrite, arsenopyrite, and disseminated free gold. An estimated 60,000 tonnes averaging 2.5 g/t was produced from the Porphyry Dike, Venus, and Paupers Dream Mines on the property. Current drill indicated reserves (May, 19861 are placed at 6,946,000 tonnes averaging 1.45 g/t gold.

Acid rain legislation included in the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 caused a great deal of uncertainty regarding the price, source and production quantities of coal supplied to the eastern coal market. Powder River Basin and other western coals continue a rapidly accelerating migration eastward. South American coals move into the northern markets. States are proposing legislation to assist utilities in complying with the new regulations in hopes of maintaining their own coal industries. Some utilities question the long-term availability of eastern compliance coal. Major coal producers must make decisions now to assure their continuing presence in the market place. Several companies have adopted a strategy to acquire eastern compliance reserves, while others have invested in technology to compete as a low-cost producer. Legislation "Acid rain." This is a topic that was debated within the scientific, environmental and industrial communities for years. Those discussions resulted in a large outlay for the federal National Acid Precipitation Assessment Project (NAPAP), which was then ignored. Acid rain then became the subject of a "60 Minutes" broadcast that debunked the acid rain theory, supporting the NAPAP study conclusions. In the final outcome, however, acid rain was the driver for the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990.

INTRODUCTION At the time the 4th edition of this book was published in 1979, the coal industry had experienced a sharp upturn in prices for its product. From 1950 throgh 1969, steam coal prices had held almost flat at about $5 US per st (about $5.50/t). Thus, when considering the effects of inflation, the price of coal had actually been declining for two decades. The passage of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act in 1969 and its cost effects started an upward trend in coal prices which was rapidly accelerated by the effects of the Mid-East oil embargo in 1972. Prices of steam coal on the spot market eventually climbed to over $30 US per st ($33/t) and higher in some cases. Metallurgical coal prices skyrocketed in a similar manner and the industry at long last appeared assured of an adequate return on investment. Many companies did expend large sums of money to upgrade and expand their mining and preparation facilities. Unfortunately the bubble eventually burst, in great measure due to the downturn in the US domestic steel industry and the resultant decline in metallurgical coal demand, loss of export markets to other nations and even imports of large amounts of foreign coal to the United States, and more stringent environmental regulations which made many high sulfur coal measures uneconomical to mine. Compounding the problem was the rapid world decline in oil prices in the mid-1980s which encouraged many consumers to utilize oil rather than coal. During the 1980s, metallurgical coal dropped over 20% in price, which, when considering inflation, actually amounted to about a 40% decrease in value. Export coal decreased a similar amount in price. Steam coal prices held nearly constant, thus also losing considerable value when inflation is considered. All of these factors make it even more imperative than ever that the industry do everything in its power to make wise economic decisions and to examine carefully all existing operations and planned future expenditures to be certain that their full cost implications are understood and that they can be justified on the basis of an adequate return on investment. It cannot be assumed that the price of coal will increase. To the contrary, as indicated previously, when considering inflation, coal decreased in value in the 1980s, just as it also did in the 1950s and 1960s. The price surges in the 1970s merely were a catchup game, and in truth the true market value of coal is in reality even lower than it was in 1950. The desire to minimize gaseous effluent in smelting and maximize gold yields from refractory ore are driving the nonferrous and gold refining industries to demand more and more oxygen. This, coupled with an increasingly competitive marketplace, forces the investigation of alternate methods of oxygen supply. Current progress in both the non-cryogenic and cryogenic fields is making the use of low-purity oxygen much more attractive. The benefits of on-site production are now available to most oxygen users. Historically, these on-site advantages could only be achieved by relatively large plants using high-purity cryogenic technology. The evolution of low-purity cryogenic and non­cryogenic oxygen production has added a new method of delivering on-site production. Specifically, the advent of oxygen Vacuum Swing Adsorption (VSA) technology has brought these benefits to smaller-volume customers by cost-effectively supplying oxygen requirements as low as 20 tons per day, (tpd). Low-purity cryogenic plants have also made an impact on the market, yielding cost reductions for larger-volume customers with oygen requirements greater than 70 tpd. This paper reviews the advantages and disadvantages of current supply methods for users having varying volume, purity and other requirements.

The mineral industry shares a particularity- heterogeneity-with the other primary industries exploiting nature such as agriculture, fisheries, and forestry, which may not be found in the secondary industries, In the mineral industry heterogeneity is evident both in the raw material, the ore in situ, and in the working conditions. Mining engineering, which encompasses the tools for designing mine production systems, is mostly an assembly of the other branches of engineering and applied science. The assemblage's goal is to arrive at an optimal production system. As such, mining engineering is similar to systems engineering. The technique for the development of systems-mine production systems or mining operations -is operations research with its succession of activities: observations, modeling, experimentation, and verification. Comparisons among alternative systems are highly desirable during the development phase of a mining operation as well as during later phases where modifications, ameliorations, and expansions are carried out on the existing system. The role of the independent consultant in systems design and development lies in the collection and breadth of experiences from modeling and model verification in other operations, which he can add to a new system's development and thus in- crease its credibility with management.

We have developed first a conveyor belt for transporting large lumps, i.e. Rock Belt successfully, in June 1976. The First Rock Belt had been delivered to Myodani site of Kobe City Developing Board in Japan, and its' successful operation has attract keen interests in customers from over the world as well as Japan. Many times during the construction of a project, whether large or small, the engineer will become involved with management of the work and workforce. In some cases, mine management will turn over the direction and responsibility of doing the work to the engineer. Because of this, it is important to know some of the basic principles of human resource applications- among other management concerns. This chapter, therefore, looks at the fundamental principles of human resource management. Three broad discussions are presented to the reader. These are: (1) organization, communications, and responsibilities of management; (2) analysis of worker motivation; and (3) supervisory leadership. Each topic encompasses the current thinking for coal mining and mining management. Much of the information in this chapter comes from Practical Coal Mine Management, by this author and published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., which discusses in depth many of the ideas presented here. Fwe 3 m (10 ft) diameter Microcel™ flotation columns were installed at Clinchfield Coal Company's Middle Fork preparation facility in order to reduce product ash and increase recovery and plant capacity. The Middle Fork facility is utilized for the recovery of fine coal from a feed stream that consists primarily of 1 .5 mm x 0 material. The columns replaced conventional flotation cells for the treatment of the minus 150 pm fraction while spirals are used to upgrade the plus 150 pm material in the plant feed. The addition of the column flotation circuit resulted in an increase in plant capacity in excess of 20 percent while reducing the flotation product ash content by approximately 7 percentage points. Flotation circuit combustible recovery was increased by 17 percentage points. This paper discusses circuit design, commissioning, and sparging system design. Circuit instrumentation, level control, reagent system control, performance comparisons with conventional flotation, and general operating procedures are also discussed.

A pilot-scale study was performed to evaluate the potential for gravity concentration of gold from -13 mm (-1/2 in.) crushed ore from Ester Dome, AK. 9.04 t (9.94 st) of crushed ore were sampled and processed through a Pan-American jig-Wilfley table pilot plant. Plant products were sampled for assay and material balance calculations. Gold recovery through one stage of jigging and two stages of tabling was 17.4% at a concentration ratio of 615:1. Concentrate grade was 766.3 g/t (22.4 oz/st). The feed grade to the plant was calculated at 1.71 g/t (0.05 oz/st). Jig tailings, primary table tailings and secondary table tailings grades were 1.44 g/t (0.042 oz/st), 1.30 g/t (0.038 oz/st), and 5.47 g/t (0.16 oz/st, respectively. Significant coarse, free-milling gold values were shown to remain in the, jig tailings. Concentrate mineralogy is discussed.

The ever-increasing demand for steel and the subsequent depletion of high-grade ores requires the massive utilization of low-grade iron ores. In the present study, an iron ore slime sample containing 56.1% Fe was investigated using physical beneficiation, carbothermal reduction, and a microwave-assisted process; however, physical beneficiation and microwave exposure were found to be inefficient as they yielded lower iron recovery. Using coconut shell as an alternative reductant was found to be promising and does not lead to the formation of higher iron oxides, such as fayalite and wustite phases. The microwave-assisted carbothermal reduction was found at par with conventional reduction, saving time and heating. The optimum magnetic concentrate obtained in both carbothermal reduction routes (microwave and muffle furnace: Fe grade, Fe recovery, and yield of 64.3, 97, and 84%, and 67, 99, and 83%, respectively) are suitable for alternative iron-making or blast furnace units.

During the past decade, since the appearance of Popoff's (1966) review of grade tonnage calculations, it has become evident that defining a new method which could be followed step by step by a technician and which would improve reserve estimation was not a simple thing to do. Some concepts have emerged though, and most definitions of ore reserve now require a statement of reliability (USGS, 1975; and Zwarten-dyke, 1976). Exactly how the reliability should be computed is not a straightforward process. It also became apparent that not only was reliability a requirement but that additional questions such as how to predict mining re- serves from geological reserves were to be asked. In fact what became obvious is that specific models have to be designed for each type of mine and for each type of question which is asked. Most methods can be encased within a unique general geostatistical, model, but it takes considerable custom tailoring, and there are still questions that are left unanswered. In this chapter, before giving techniques, we intend to first review what should be required from a grade tonnage calculation done at the exploration stage. If the final objective is still to specify a tonnage and grade, with eventually a reliability, many qualifications have to be made before quoting, and of course, calculating these two numbers. Then the currently avail- able methods will be reviewed and future trends will be shown; finally a few case studies will be given and recommendations about the choice of a model will be made.

Fibre reinforced shotcrete in combination with other types of support systems is becoming the leading support method for underground excavations, especially those present in low quality rock masses. Sudden or rapid ground support failure can expose workers to safety hazards, damage to equipment and others resulting in production interruptions that will impact the cost of operation. Knowing the peak and post-peak strength characteristics of the support system over time are of major importance. Round Determinate Panel Testing of fiber reinforce shotcrete is the primary test used by the mining industry to determine strength characteristics; however, the tests are costly and significant manpower is required in a mine environment to build, store, handle and test the panels. For these reasons numerical modeling can result in an effective method to produce realistic results. This paper examines the strength characteristics Round Determinate Panel tests and its ultimate application in underground excavations, using Itasca?s three dimensional particle flow code (PFC3D).

Previous work has shown that significant, free milling gold values exist in the Ryan Lode ore. This project used pilot scale equipment to estimate the percentage of gold recoverable by gravity methods from the circulating load of a conventional, closed-circuit, grinding mill. The pilot scale flowsheet employed three stages of gravity concentration, hydraulic classification and batch grinding to simulate a full scale milling circuit. 172 kg (379 lbs) of Ryan Lode ore were processed, having a head grade of 4.8 g/metric ton (0.14 oz/ton). Results showed that simple gravity methods are capable of recovering 45-50% of the gold values in a concentrate grading in excess of 3430 g/metric ton (100 oz/ton). Of the remaining gold values reporting to the classifier overflow solids (80% passing 70 microns, 3.1 g/metric ton (0.09 oz/ton)) 89% were recovered from 48 hour bottle roll tests.

Most of the State is drained by three major river systems-the Ohio, Susquehanna and Delaware. This abundant supply of surface water has been widely utilized throughout the State, but today other sources of water must be developed due to the increasing demands for water, die largest undeveloped source of water in Pennsylvania is ground water. Pennsylvania is also fortunate to possess extensive coal resources. These coal resources have contributed measurably to the development and prosperity of the States Coal and water's - two valuable resources - have been necessary for the development and industrialization of Pennsylvania, The State needs both resources but can no longer afford to develop one while adversely affecting or destroying the other, We are aware of the effect of coal mining on surface water, but coal mining can also materially affect subsurface water, This effect will according' to the local geologic conditions.

As a means of permanent disposal, fine coal refuse is often pumped as a slurry into surface impoundments. As the available volume is filled, the embankment heights are frequently increased. The additional embankment material is often placed upon consolidated fine coal refuse. There has been concern about the long-term effect of consolidation of this material at or above the liquid limit on its shear strength. A laboratory investigation was performed using three different types of fine coal slurry taken from central Appalachian coal-preparation plants. The refuse was consolidated in 3-m (10 ft) Plexiglas columns under incremental amounts of surcharge loading. The incremental loads were designed to simulate the effect of increasing the height of a refuse embankment on top of the consolidating coal slurry. After the refuse in the columns had consolidated for several months, the columns were cut apart, and triaxial tests were performed on both the consolidated and unconsolidated material for comparison of their shear-strength parameters.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to assess the impact of a directional water spray system on a unique single inlet dust scrubber on a low profile mining machine. Tests were conducted in a full scale model mine using a Joy 12 CM 10-AA continuous mining machine. Tracer gas was introduced at the face and concentrations of the tracer gas were monitored at the face and in the return. Various parameters included: mining position, depth of cut, brattice setback and combinations of scrubber, directional sprays or symmetrical sprays. Results indicated that either directional or symmetrical water spray configuration improved the ventilation effectiveness of the scrubber by a factor of 2 to 3. Average face ventilation effectiveness (FVE) values for all testing of the scrubber and directional sprays were 0.95, versus 0.37 for a standard 6 m (20-ft) blowing curtain without sprays. No FVE values were less than the standard 6 m (20-ft) blowing results.

The presence of elements, minerals, or chemical compounds in materials at very low concentrations is becoming a constantly increasing concern for several segments of the Industry. Some trace elements or chemical compounds may be considered as hazardous, some are simply considered as undesirable In complex processes where they could be constantly recycled and end up as the major factor of decreasing quality for some valuable products. In some other cases, the presence of a trace element or mineral may be highly desirable because of its economical value: precious metals are falling into this category, they probably were the first trace elements to draw our attention. Tremendous quantity of money is spent for analysis at the trace level, also the analytical "tool" has been considerably improved during recent years, but still the sampling aspect of the problem remains obscur for many, and because of it, large quantity of analytical efforts become meaningless. Not only the absence of sampling strategies is badly affecting the representativeness of a large majority of samples, but furthermore for the same reasons, many laboratories are failing In their endeavor to prepare reliable standard reference materials. The reason of this failure has its roots in the unability to estimate effectively the sampling characteristics of the element, mineral, or compound of interest, not to mention the unability to perform precise and accurate complete analysis, so essential for the instrumental analyst (1). In this paper a strategy to perform a better sampling operation is recommended. SELECTION OF A PROBABILISTIC APPROACH AS SOON AS PRACTICALLY POSSIBLE It Is essential to differentiate probabilistic sampling from non-probabilistic sampling. As Illustrated in Figure 1, the sampling operation Is a selection process which could be performed In two different ways: I. A probabilistic selection process according to which all elements of a lot of material to be sampled are submitted to the selection with a same probability of being selected. 2. A non-probabilistic selection process according to which all elements of a lot of material to be sampled are submitted to the selection with different probabilities of being selected.

In Japan, almost no natural gypsum is mined for industrial uses of gypsum, and almost all gypsum is synthetic gypsum, that is desulphogypsum, produced by waste sulphur dioxide gas from metal smelters and power plants, and other industrial waste sources. The amount of such sythetic gypsum production has reached more than six million metric tons per year (1979). Major uses are for cements and building materials. Other uses are soil conditioner, investment casting mold, organic composite materials, etc and sulphur recovery by gypsum decomposition is being examined. This paper summarizes present Japanese production and uses of sythetic gypsun produced from industrial waste.

"INTRODUCTION Lundin Mining’s Eagle Operation, located in Marquette County, upper Michigan consists of a mine and concentrator that process a Ni-Cu-(PGE) ore. The mine itself is an underground operation and the ore is trucked from the Eagle mine site 66 miles to the Humboldt mill where both nickel and copper concentrates are produced. Operations began in 2014 and continued with an average production of approximately 23,000 tonnes of Ni and 20,000 tonnes of Cu per year for the first three years of operation. The Humboldt Mill, currently operated by Lundin Mining, processes the nickel/copper ore from Eagle Mine and performs the concentration through several stages of flotation. Originally built in 1954, the Humboldt Mill began operations as an Iron Ore processing facility, and was converted to a gold processing plant during the 1980s. Various groups owned the site after closure of the gold operation. Eagle purchased the Mill in 2008 and invested more than $280 million to clean up historic mine waste and refurbish the plant (see flowsheet in APPENDIX). This paper will overview the ramp-up of the operation, and discuss some specific areas that went well and some that could have gone better during the design phase. HIGH LEVEL DESIGN CRITERIA Coarse ore arrives from the mine and is stored in a building with a capacity of 10,000 tonnes. Ore is crushed in three stages to a final product size of 100% Passing 12mm. Crushed ore is conveyed to the mass flow fine ore bins, which have a live capacity of 3000 tonnes. Crushed ore is fed to two parallel 900 HP ball mills, charged with 3” high chrome grinding media, and ground, in closed circuit with hydrocyclones, to a p80 of 110 microns in the flotation feed. Soda ash is added to the mills based on process water hardness. Cyclone overflow passes to the bulk conditioner where Sodium Isopropyl Xanthate (SIPX) and Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol (MIBC) are added. The slurry is pumped to the rougher bank for bulk flotation. Rougher concentrate is fed to a 500HP vertically stirred regrind mill and is ground to a p80 of 50 microns, using 5/8” high chrome balls. Rougher tailings report to the tailings thickener. The regrind cyclone overflow is sent to the single stage cleaner bank followed by two scavenger banks. The cleaner concentrate is pumped to the copper-nickel separation circuit. Cleaner tailings report to the tailings thickener. In the copper-nickel separation circuit, the pH is raised to 11.5 and a copper concentrate is recovered from the bulk cleaner concentrate in two stages, namely the copper roughers and the copper cleaner columns. The concentrate from the copper flotation columns is the final copper concentrate. The tailings from the columns return to the head of the copper-nickel separation. The nickel concentrate is the copper rougher tailings stream."
