The development is described of a real-time tracer gas sensing system for use in fell-scale laboratory studies of air flow behavior around mining machines. A semiconductor sintered tin-dioxide gas sensor is used for gas analyses. A data acquisition and analyses software specific to the sensor characteristics was also developed as part of the system. The system permits the study of transient behavior and assists in obtaining a better understanding of the movement of air around mining machines and in the study of the effect of potential airflow modification devices on the dust exposure of face personnel. It seeks to replace the current method of using a centralized infrared gas analyzer that polls several sampling points using an array of solenoid valves and gas line purgers. The polling results in a significant time lapse between the first and the last set of readings. The system described in this paper has the advantages of real-time sampling and safe operation.

Because of the high economic value associated with small improvements in the operating performance of mineral processing plants, innovations in instrumentation, stabilization and expert control systems have been an ever-present part of the landscape in plants throughout the world since the I 960s. Expert control systems are computer programs that continuously monitor plant conditions; contain "expert knowledge" concerning the process, equipment and operational knowledge; and make timely recommendations for new process set points or even directly change the process set points to achieve desired management goals. Early rudimentary expert control systems first appeared in the early 1970s. They have grown from small, experimental but ambitious projects in which single unit operations were controlled to plant-wide systems that include technologies used in the U.S. space shuttle program. Experiences and results of applying these systems throughout the world will be explained discussed and analyzed. Typical results will be outlined and the use of expert control in the future will be projected.

Coal production in the in the Powder River Basin began its tremendous expansion during the boom of the mid-1970s. New mines were opened from 1976 through the early 1980s. This expansion soon placed Wyoming at the top of the list of coal producing states, where it has since remained. Mines are operated by large companies, with safety and production having equal priority. These mines have been some of the safest ever in the coal industry. Many Sentinels of Safety Awards have gone to them. Safety programs are varied, but there are commonalities. Mine safety at Wyodak Extra training is required of all supervisors. The company offers to pay for any additional first-aid training that employees participate in. Safety departments conduct weekly safety talks. All employees receive the monthly magazine Family Safety and Health compliments of Wyodak. Electricians receive extra training on electric wheel motors, from General Electric. Equipment operators receive extra training from Dresser.

The literature contains several references to the influence of copper solvent extraction reagents on crud formation, but, there is disagreement as to whether the reagent has an influence on crud generation. The results of three pilot plant campaigns, where crud generation was studied as a function of the copper solvent extraction reagent, are reported. These pilot plants were run at operating copper solvent extraction plants using the aqueous solutions being treated by the commercial copper solvent extraction plants. Two of the pilot plant studies showed that the copper solvent extraction reagent had a significant influence on the extent of crud formation while the other pilot plant study indicated the copper solvent extraction reagent had a lesser influence on crud generation.

In this study, the removal of zinc, cadmium and copper from an aqueous sulphate solution, derived from the biomass desorption process, was examined by using a reaction system with a three-dimensional high surface area electrode (RNiF). This reaction system was found to be extremely effective in reducing metal concentrations to the ppb range. The effect of cathode potential and flow rate were studied for three different nickel foam porosities. In addition, current- potential curves were recorded, at a rotating vitreous carbon electrode, to deter- mine the possibility of depositing the aforementioned metals separately.

Reactive barriers, which consume oxygen, are prospective though unconventional alternatives to physical barriers for Acid Mine Drainage prevention. However, a reactive barrier implies a problem of duration. Pore gases were analysed in several wood waste piles in order to understand the factors which control wood degradation and help to determine the effective life span of such a cover. Long term efficiency seems to strongly depend on the degree of water saturation at the bottom of the pile, likely because the development of a microbial biomass in such an environment helps to keep the amounts of nutriments and readily metabolizable organic substrates at a high level, which in turn promotes oxygen consumption.

To recycle steelmaking slags for their iron, manganese and lime contents, removal of the phosphorus-bearing dicalcium silicate and calcium phosphate is essential. Slow-cooling of slags was necessary to promote sufficient grain growth to achieve liberation. In situ grain size distribution determination showed that a high soaking temperature, a long soaking time, a very slow cooling rate and the addition of fluorspar promoted grain growth. High gradient magnetic separation on slow-cooled slags removed much of the dicalcium silicate. Liberation modeling was used to discuss the breakage and beneficiation characteristics of the slow-cooled slags.

The majority of existing models describing (methane) gas transport within, and liberation from, coal structures treat these as continua wherein two main gas flow modes (diffusive and Darcy permeable) prevail, and use finite difference techniques to generate solutions to the resulting multivariate parabolic partial differential equation(s). Isotropy and homogeneity in the physical and geometric coal structure properties are often assumed, and the existence of fundamental random fluctuations in these proper- ties is not catered for. The model proposed herein does not suffer these inadequacies, and its efficiency is enhanced by the replacement of the diffusion equation by an accurate approximation. Dynamic mining activity, gas contributions made by the geology surrounding the mining seam, goafing of overlying strata and the effects of induced strain are all taken into account.

The results of a survey of 46 West Virginia coal samples, employing the Office of Coal Research-Band coal sewage treatment process, indicated that the Freeport coal and Bakerstown coal from Preston County, Pittsburgh coal from Harrison and Ohio County and the Sewickley coal from Monongalia County offer outstanding potential for water clarification. Oxidation, steam treatment and acid and base washing of coal generally resulted in small positive or negative changes to the water clarification capacities of the coal while the employment of prepared coal fractions resulted in more significant benefits. Of the coals tested, those fractions with high ash, high sulfur and low Btu generally possessed the highest adsorption capacities.

There is a saying, the greater the gratitude, the shorter the speech. That puts me in a quandary, because while I am grateful for the honor you do me today, I also want to talk about a subject very important to all of us. A few months ago, when I was asked to submit a title for my talk, I chose "Quality where it counts." I did so because perhaps the most important thing we at Amax did in our restructuring was to commit to quality in all our businesses - quality people, assets, and operations. Together, they create quality performance, which produces quality growth and increased shareholder value - our prime corporate mission. We are dedicated to quality. At Amax, quality means everything. Today, I want to discuss quality in another context - the need for it in American education and what we have to do to achieve it. If we ignore this need, we will all suffer the consequences. And they will be upon us far sooner than the next century, barely a decade away. I think almost everyone in this room works for an organization that had to restructure in the 1980s. Mining companies that did not, just didn't make it. Well, we did. As an industry, we are seeing improved profits, positive cash flow, and a more competitive position in the world marketplace. But all the restructuring we have done, all the hard work, and all the pain that was part of it, will be in vain if, down the road, we do not have the educated people we need as workers. We need them to design, manufacture, and market the products that use the basic materials produced by the mining industry. Simply put, we are at a crisis point in education today. That is no new revelation. Nearly six years ago, the National Committee on Excellence in Education published its report, "A Nation At Risk." Since then, things have not gotten better. The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, US News & World Report, and Fortune have all recently published stories about the sorry state of education in the United States. The subject has become the topic of TV talk shows as well as national commissions, and for good reason. The pool of young people entering the US labor force is dwindling. In the next decade, 10 million fewer will enter the job market compared to the 1970s. But fewer of them will be qualified to do the jobs available to them. Here's why: • 20% of today's high school students drop out before they are 18 and another 20% graduate functionally illiterate; 40% of today's fourth graders think the world is flat; • 20% of today's sixth graders cannot locate the United States on a world map; • one of every three ninth graders cannot figure the change for a two-item meal - and I'm talking about a Big Mac and fries. These are not just problems of minority kids in big city ghettos. Fully 40% of all young working Americans cannot add up their lunch bill. Three out of every five college freshmen need some kind of remedial work. These statistics are frightening. Particularly so because, while the work force is becoming less qualified and our public education system is getting worse, our products and technologies are becoming more complex. We are approaching a time when we will have machines that recognize handwriting but people who cannot write. We will have technology to take voice commands, but people who do not know what they are talking about. The accelerating pace of technology is changing the nature of the job market. The fastest growing jobs now, and in the years ahead, are in professional, technical, and sales positions requiring the highest education and skill levels. Most of these jobs will require the use of a computer. Yet, 95% of today's graduating high school students have never laid a finger on a computer keyboard. An optimized counting scheme for a mixture of radon daughters and thoron daughters typical of Ontario mines, developed in a previous study, was experimentally examined under mine conditions. The counting scheme requires a 10 minute sample and 5 1/2 hours counting instead of a 60 minute sample and more than 40 hours counting as required by a previous method. Taking into account the uncertainties associated with concentrations, flowrate and radioactive decay, the precision of the counting scheme was analyzed and found to be on average better than the 40 hour method.

The effectiveness of pre-reinforcement as an immediate stabilization measure as well as its contribution to the permanent stabilization of a tunnel were studied through the use of physical (Figure 1) and numerical models (1). Physical models were designed for the investigation of two pre-reinforcement systems: first, reinforcing far ahead of the main excavation (Figure 2); second, spiling reinforcement ahead of the face (Figure 3). In both cases, the use of reinforcement was responsible for permanently stabilizing an otherwise unstable opening. Data from the physical models were used to calibrate a numerical model from which additional information on long term behavior, methods to account for the capacity of a pre-reinforcement system, and the mechanisms involved were ascertained. These studies indicated that pre-reinforcement can stabilize a rock mass effectively as it reduces deformations and thereby deterioration due to strain softening, provides rock mass confinement leading to increased available strength, and maintains rock arch continuity allowing for increased tangential stress in the immediate vicinity of the opening. Field studies verified the capacity of spiling reinforcement to restrain initial deformations.

New permit discharge standards instituted at Hecla Limited?s Lucky Friday Mine required installation of water treatment plants to manage water quality at two outfalls to the South Fork of the Coeur d?Alene River. The 002 Outfall Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is a clarification-filtration plant for treating the combined mill and underground discharge water flows. Process optimization efforts were a significant challenge until the negative impact the exploration diamond drilling products had on the clarification process was identified and resolved. The products were being wasted directly to the mine water discharge system which was pumped to the surface WTP. Anionic soluble oil and polyacrylamide based products were causing TSS particle hydrophobicity and dispersion that greatly affected coagulation and flocculation response, resulting in excessive chemical usage and treatment control issues. This paper details how problems associated with the drill products negatively impacted the 002 WTP and how system changes, alternative product usage and treatment at the source resulted in more consistent plant performance.

The Indian Mining sector is subjected to a number of trends including call for global transition towards the route to sustainable development. Several regulations were enacted by the Government departments, from time to time, in order to identify the problems faced by the mining industry, including small-scale mining operations and to suggest appropriate mitigation measures in the form of environmental standards and certifications. During this process, a pursuit of sustainable development is regarded as an important area responding to socio-economic conditions, priorities and thus guides eventually corporate policies and practices. Thus, there is a need to formulate strategies for sustainable development. Based on these strategies some environmental indicators were developed in order to track down the progress and to evaluate its success. A case study pertaining to a group of iron ore mines in North Goa and Chromite mines in Sukinda, Orissa was selected for this study. Base line environmental data has been generated in the respective study sites. A core set of environmental indicators monitoring environmental progress based on the P-S-R model pioneered by OECD is linked with indicators for assessing the integration of environmental concerns.

The "Hormite Group" was proposed for palygorskite (attapulgite) and sepiolite for their complex magnesium silicate composition and elongate crystals (Martin-Vivaldi and Robertson, 1971). These minerals occur in close association with each other and more complex structural variations may exist (Bailey, 1972). In 1862 Savchenkov used the name palygorskite to describe a mineral from the Palygorsk locality (Hay, 1975), near the Ural Mountains. Ovecharenko and Kukovsky (1984) mention that when mountain leather deposits were prospected in the Palygorsk Division mine it was assumed this unusual mineral was a variety of asbestos. Early mineralogists used the terms "mountain cork" or "mountain leather" when referring to palygorskite. Robertson (1986) mentions that it appears palygorskite was known since Theophrastus&apos; time, ca. 314 BC. J. de Lapparent used "attapulgite" for clays from Attapulgus, GA, and Mormoiron, France, because he thought them different from palygorskite, but the two types were proved to be the same (Bailey et al., 1971). The name attapulgite is still used for the Florida and Georgia deposits when the crystal length to diameter ratio does not exceed 10:1(Merkl, 1989). Georgia palygorskite clays are of much shorter length compared to classic palygorskite. In 1847 Glocker first used the name sepiolite which was called "Meerschaum" by Werner (1788) and Hauy (1801) namedit "Ecume de Mer." Brochant (1802) described low density and white magnesium silicates adding the name Talcum Plasticum and Ecume de Mer. In the Meigs-Attapulgus-Quincy district palygorskite (attapulgite) commonly occurs in two distinct forms referred to as short length palygorskite (Meigs Member) and long length palygorskite (Dogtown Member) (Merkl, 1989). Long length palygorskite crystals (> 10 pm) are rarely observed in the Meigs and Dogtown Members, but when present are in association with dolomite crystals. The short length form is usually less than 2 pm in length and has a low magnesium content whereas the long length form has a high magnesium content and a length greater than 2 pm. The distinctions in morphology are not only important because of the relationship to the origin of the deposits, but also in relation to activity in causing membranolytic activity related to data on palygorskite samples from 9 locations ranging from relatively inert to active in work reported by Nolan et al. (1989). The > 10 pm lengths amounted to only 51 of 17,401 fibers sized. The shortest lengths (< 0.5 pm) were relatively inert. This study pointed out that surface activity, morphology, and chemical differences may be distinctly different within the definition of palygorskite, or for that matter for any individual mineral so that health and other properties must be measured because the name alone does not necessarily indicate uniformity. Palygorskite (attapulgite) fuller&apos;s earth was first sold for drilling mud in 1941. The market for this use expanded slowly and has maintained a level of 7 to 10% of the total US production during the last few years. Most of the fuller&apos;s earth sold for drilling mud comes from the southern part of the Meigs-Attapulgus-Quincy district of Georgia and Florida. Palygorskite clays produced in this area are superior to most other fuller&apos;s earth for mud used in drilling salt formations, but because of high water loss, they are inferior to bentonite where the rocks drilled contain no saltwater. According to Oulton (1965), more than 90 different grades of fuller&apos;s earth are produced. Some of these grades are used for pharmaceuticals designed to absorb toxins, bacteria, and alkaloids; for treatment of dysentery; for purifying water and dry cleaning fluids, dry cleaning powders and granules; for the manufacture of NCR (no carbon required) multiple copy paper; for the manufacture of wallpaper; and as extenders or fillers for plastic, paint, and putty. Fuller&apos;s earth mined near Ellenton, FL, was used for making lightweight aggregates for the construction of concrete barges during World War I1 (Calver, 1957). Still other uses of fuller&apos;s earth and its suitability for uses in new products are outlined by Haden, Jr., and Schwint (1967), Haden, Jr., (1972), and Haas (1970). One special use of fuller&apos;s earth is as a carrier of platinum catalysts that are made in the United Kingdom from sepiolite clays mined in Spain. Other uses of sepiolite fuller&apos;s earth (Chambers, 1959) are similar to those of the palygorskite (attapulgite) type mined in the United States.

Technological change is continually affecting the mining industry and the many papers being presented at this meeting reflect this fact. I fully agree that miners must remain fully cognizant of technology that can change mining costs and therefore your competitive marketplace. Despite the embrace of new technology and effective mine management techniques, the mining enterprise may not realize increased net income if the structure of the minerals marketplace is not understood. An important segment of the marketing structure for minerals is transportation. Transportation costs per ton can be much greater than the mining costs per ton and may accordingly overshadow hard earned gains in productivity. Change is greatly affecting the transportation industry but the change is driven more by governmental policy than technology. Although some technological advances are occurring in the bulk transportation business, the changes I want to address arise from policy. Policy changes have come from legislation in the 1970&apos;s culminating with the Staggers Act of 1980 and ensuing Interstate Commerce Commission decisions.

"The excavation of a tunnel in highly weathered and strongly fractured rock masses due to tectonic actions is still a challenge. In order to maintain reasonable productivity, excavation through a wide zone of highly tectonized rock mass requires a detailed, integrated study of the construction solutions and a monitoring system to minimize the process time and to optimize the adopted consolidation measures in accordance with a predefined matrix of possible support systems. This paper summarizes some interesting data acquired during the excavation of the Brenner Railway Base Tunnel system between Italy and Austria. The Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) runs through the fault line between the European and the African tectonic plate. This big fault zone is called “Periadriatic Line.” In particular, data acquired in the exploratory-service tunnel have been analyzed. Furthermore, the base concepts for defining the consolidation and support solutions adopted for the excavation of the exploratory tunnel are described. INTRODUCTION The Brenner Railway Base Tunnel (BBT) is a system of underground structures and tunnels that is designed to connect Italy and Austria using new railway standards. It is based on high speed (HS) concepts and applies the European Standards for Interoperability (TSI). The railway includes twin tunnels for a total length of about 55.0 Km without considering the connection tunnels to the existing underground railway in Innsbruck. Including the latter, the total length of the tunnel system reaches 64 Km, and is among the longest tunnels in the world. The Italian section passes through the so-called ""Periadriatic Line,"" which is an important tectonic structure generated by the collision between the European and the African tectonic plates. Despite the extensive investigations carried out (boreholes down to 700 meter depth), significant geological and mechanical uncertainties inside the Periadriatic formations remained unsolved. In order to elevate the level of confidence and observe the behavior of the rock mass at a representative scale, the BBT Authority decided to excavate in advance the service tunnel, which has taken the function of an exploratory tunnel. The data and observations collected during its excavation would provide important insights for the design of the main tunnels."

The advantages of recirculation of air in underground mines have been well recognized, and several papers have been written on the subject. Issues of concern to the various segments of the mining industry relate to the health and safety of workers, specifically, methane and respirable dust build-up in the air, high humidity and temperature at the work face. This paper presents a survey of various studies pertaining to recirculation as a prelude to the experimental and quantitative studies performed by the authors. Experiments were performed at a trona mine on the transportation and deposition of dust along the return airways, for three different velocities. Modeling studies were performed using dust deposition models. The model predicted data were compared with experimental data in order to lay the foundation for the development of advanced predictor models for recirculation in trona mines. Two models for dust deposition were analyzed. The model predicted data are in divergence from the experimental data, indicating the need to develop better models.

Separation of dolomite from Florida phosphates was achieved by first conditioning the feed with fatty acid at pH 10 followed by reconditioning at pH 4 or below, before flotation. Observed selectivity of this two stage conditioning process was attributed to the amount as well as changes in the nature of the adsorbed collector species upon reconditioning. In this paper, bench scale flotation results of optimizing the major process parameters, such as reconditioning pH and collector dosage, for upgrading natural high dolomitic phosphate samples from Florida are discussed.
