Populations of Bacillus cereus spores are elevated in soils over four subsurface gold deposits in the western United States. Large deposit-to-background ratios of B. cereus populations were obtained in soil traverses over the Minnesota vein deposit, Empire District, Colorado (maximum 50:1); the Shasta (maximum 3,500:1), and Evening Star maximum 18,000:1) vein deposits, Shasta County, California; and the Hog Ranch disseminated gold deposit (maximum 40,000:1) in Washoe County, Nevada. Small increases in the concentration of toxic metals in the soil may be responsible for the elevated spore populations. The observed elevation of B. cereus spore populations near these gold deposits indicates that the method should be further investigated as a potential exploration tool.

Abandoned bauxite surface mines in the Parnassos area may be rehabilitated using bauxite residues as filler. The objective of this study was to estimate the percentage of precipitation that may infiltrate through the bauxite residues to the lower geological formations when they are disposed off in mine open pits. Two scenarios were investigated simulating: a) available field tests, and b) a demonstration test that was planned to be performed in an abandoned open pit close to the Aluminium of Greece plant. It was indicated that the annual infiltration from bauxite residues disposed off in the demonstration test for the most probable scenario is very low, equal to 13.17mm corresponding to 3.1% of the annual precipitation. Furthermore, it was estimated that the annual percolation from the field tests is approximately 4.4%, very close to the infiltration values measured in the field tests for the same period.

The redox reactions that occur on pyrrhotite and pentlandite in contact with oxygenated deionized water were examined using voltammetry. Reactions were put forward in which both minerals were progressively hydroxylated to form thermodynamically metastable surface intermediate products. These intermediates were modelled as metal deficient sulphides where a sulphurous layer was coordinated onto the remaining metal sites via polysulphides. Prior to hydroxylation pentlandite exhibited changes in the surface stoichiometry which were not related to pH effects. The formation of polysuiphide-sulphur intermediates were believed to promote collectorless; flotability for the two minerals. Microflotation tests (0.3 g samples) verified that the surface potential and particle size affected the flotation response, excessive oxidation inhibiting the minerals' flotability. Larger scale tests using ore samples (30 g) confirmed that the extent of pulp oxidation, particle size distribution and the presence of frothers affected the flotation response, the findings being in accordance with the postulated model for the hydrophobic species generated on the pentlandite and pyrrhotite surfaces.

Between 1991 and 1994, metallurgical residues from a pressure-oxidation autoclave at the Campbell Au-quartz mine at Red Lake, northern Ontario, were neutralized with dolomite-rich flotation tailings and were deposited in a polyethylene-lined disposal area. Mineralogical analysis indicates that most of the As occurs as a crystalline ferric sulfarsenate, and some is associated with Fe oxides and with K-H3O jarosite. Field pore-water geochemical data from 1994 and 1995 showed increases in Fe(II) and As(III) concentrations, suggesting that the sulfarsenate and jarosite are dissolving; none of the discrete As phases included in a thermodynamic database limit dissolved-As concentrations, and these concentrations may continue to increase. These results demonstrate the potential for Fe and As loading through groundwater systems.

The West Side CSO Tunnel, Pump Station & Pipeline Project is currently beginning construction along the downtown waterfront of Portland, Oregon. This4.3 meter diameter, 5,500 meter-long soft ground tunnel will be driven along the westbank of the Willamette River adjacent to buildings and utilities and several major pile-supported bridges. High groundwater pressure, extended lengths of gravel to cobble-size alluvium, and the need to control ground loss and surface settlements were key considerations in the selection of slurry tunnel boring machines for the project This paper presents an overview of the numerical modeling that was performed during design to estimate the strains and additional loads in the pile-supported structures and to assess the efficiency of proposed mitigation measures.

In order to improve handling of subsidence damages the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund supported the development of novel cost-effective methods of repair. The research in developing the repairs was directed towards the most common and costly damages that had been observed. As a result repair techniques were designed for structurally cracked foundations in the tension zone; structurally cracked foundations in the compression zone; and damaged or undamaged tilted foundations. When appropriate, the postulated methods would result in: 1. significant cost savings (over conventional procedures); 2. a structural capacity greater than when the foundation was untracked; and 3. an aesthetic appeal. All the postulated repair methodologies were laboratory and/or field tested. The paper will summarize the essentials of each technique developed and the test results.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop safe practices for the use of shotcrete as ground support in underground mines, particularly mines operating in weak host rock. As part of this research, tests were conducted with a commercial poly-fiber reinforced shotcrete mix to develop a practical means of measuring shotcrete adhesion strength. Full-scale tests were conducted in a test frame equipped with concrete panels having three distinct surface roughness profiles. Adhesion test fixtures either embedded or epoxied in the shotcrete were overcored into the underlying concrete, and direct tensile tests were conducted to determine the bond strength of the shotcrete cores to the substrate after a selected shotcrete curing interval (1, 3, 7, 14, 28, or 90 days). Measured adhesion strengths typically ranged from 0.5 to 2.0 MPa depending on the curing age of the shotcrete samples. This paper presents the results of these tests, describes the portable test system components, and addresses some of the design issues encountered in the development of a rugged and reliable method for determining shotcrete adhesion strength in underground mines.

The use of surfactants as wetting agents to suppress sulfide ore dust has been investigated. Numerous surfactants were examined to determine their characteristics and to investigate their ability to improve the wetting of the sulfide ore dust. However, the surfactants selected as suitable dust suppressors proved to have a negative effect on the flotation of ore contaminated with such reagents. A method was developed to eliminate the detrimental influence of dust-suppressing surfactants. It consisted of surfactant adsorption on activated carbon and separation of loaded carbon prior to flotation. The technique is simple and requires minimal changes in the plant flowsheet.

Selected voltammograms in tetraborate buffer solutions in the presence of ethyl xanthate or isopropyl xanthate at pH 9.3, for chalcocite, covellite, chalcopyrite, and enargite mineral electrodes, are presented. The concept of critical Eh of dixanthogen condensation (Ehc) is introduced, and the line of Ehc is thermodynamically defined in plots of log [X i] vs Eh, for methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl xanthates. A reaction scheme of xanthate oxidation in four steps, involving the dixanthogen condensation step, is proposed. A first attempt to interpret mineral flotation from a more general point of view is made. The electrochemical mechanism of dixanthogen formation and condensation is considered as a particular case of a more general and relevant phenomenon, which is the decomposition of the collector giving hydrophobic colloidal forms, whose associative behavior in bulk solution and at the mineral/solution interface is governed by colloid chemistry.

The technology for using limestone or lime to scrub SO2 from power-plant flue gas has significant implications to the limestone industry. A brief status report on these processes will be made, possible process requirements on the limestone properties will be reviewed, and projections on the buildup of demand with respect to time will be reviewed. Disposal problems inherent with the use of these throwaway processes will also be summarized. Given a viable technology, relations among (1) distance of power plants from low- and high-sulfur coal and limestone deposits, (2) modes of handling and transporting immense tonnages of bulk material-coal and/or limestone, and (3) regional air-quality standards are some of the factors which will ultimately determine the demand for limestone. A discussion of these factors will be presented, with the intent of identifying geographic regions where significant increases in production can reasonably be expected.

The underground ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) provides for the unparalleled ability to ensure the safety of the workers, the public and the environment. Although small spatially, the system can vary the airflow from 31.2 to 217.1 m3/s (66,000 to 460,000 cfm). The system can automatically incorporate HEPA filtration in the event of radioactive contamination. Remote-capable regulators individually control the four main splits, and they can be adjusted from the surface if necessary. A ventilation remote-monitoring and control system provides real-time information. Future areas of concern include DPM compliance, system psychrometry, logic-based real-time mine-ventilation simulation and automation using PLC technology. This paper discusses the evolution of this system.

The Nuggety Gully prospect is located 170 km (106 miles) south- east of Port Hedland and 40 km (25 miles) northeast of Marble Bar in the Pilbara Region, Western Australia. The area is held under title by Esso Exploration and Production Australia, Inc. The prospect covers a significant, but currently uneconomic body of molybdenum and copper mineralization of porphyry style, associated with Archean high level acid intrusives intruding sediments and volcanics of a narrow east-west Archean greenstone belt. The Nuggety Gully intrusive rocks have been dated at 3.2 b.y. ± 117 (de Later, oral communication). The current resource estimate for the deposit is 102 Mt (1 12 million st) of 0.1 1 % Mo and 0.15% Cu.

A first-order flotation rate equation was derived by incorporating both hydrodynamic and surface forces involved in bubble-particle interactions. The hydrodynamic forces were calculated using an appropriate stream function, while the surface forces calculated using the extended DL VO theory. The equation was used to predict flotation results as functions of several important parameters such as contact angle, Zeta potentials of air bubbles and particles, and bubble size. The predictions are consistent with experience, and can be explained in view of the various sub-processes considered in the model.

Rapid industrial growth in India has caused the country to realize the strategic importance of its zinc and lead deposits. Private companies, nationalized in 1965, are now a corporate public sector organization that is making great strides in developing the nation's lead-zinc mining capability. The main mining area is centered around Zawar at Rajasthan. It consists a group of mines - Mochia, Balaria, Zawarmala and Baroi. Mining activities have also been extended by opening the mines at Rajpura-Dariba at Rajasthan, Sargipallie at Orissa and Agnigundala at Andhra Pradesh. A huge deposit has been explored at Agucha in the Bhilwara district but full-scale production has not yet begun. Annual consumption of zinc and lead in India has risen steadily from 25 and 7.9 kt (27,500 and 8700 st), respectively, in 1973-1974 to 162.8 and 80 kt (179,450 and 88,000 st), respectively, in 1989-1990. Mine production has also risen consistently to cope with the increased metal demand. The mining company hopes to increase production at existing mines and upgrade the beneficiation and smelting facilities. Moreover, mining operations may be expanded by opening up new units that are now awaiting governmental clearances. To help local governments plan for long-term supplies of sand and gravel for buildings and infrastructure, the Utah Geological Survey is assessing natural aggregate resources (mainly sand and gravel) in the St. George, Utah area. Whereas much of the aggregate in the study area is adequate for road-base construction, high-quality aggregate for Port- land cement concrete is limited due to geology, and also due to land administration and environmental issues. Virgin River alluvial gravels southwest of St. George are generally poor sources of aggregate because they contain clasts of soft sediments and soluble minerals derived from Mesozoic rocks. Elsewhere, widespread secondary calcium carbonate (caliche), as rinds and matrix in gravel, lower the quality of material. Young river-terrace deposits in Fort Pearce Wash, and along the Virgin River above St. George are the primary sources of sand and gravel for the area. Alluvial fans on the east side of the Beaver Dam Mountains, and on the west side of the Hurricane Cliffs are also sources of aggregate. Stream-channel deposits associated with "inverted valleys" north of the towns of St. George and Hurricane, Utah, and older pediment gravels on the west flank of the Beaver Dam Mountains may be future sources of high-quality aggregate. Accelerated urban development during the 1980s and early 1990s has caused St. George and other communities in Washington County to encroach upon sand and gravel pits originally located in rural, undeveloped areas. Urban residents often view nearby sand and gravel operations as undesirable neighbors and pressure elected officials to close the pits. Pit closures effectively eliminate the remaining reserve from the sand and gravel resource base of the area. More- over, resources may also be lost as new homes are built upon undeveloped sand and gravel deposits. The St. George area is particularly susceptible to loss of aggregate resources because high-quality natural aggregate for construction is already in short supply. Moreover, most of the land in the study area is administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and subject to various land-use restrictions. Much of this public land cannot be developed for mineral materials, such as sand and gravel, because of federal regulations protecting rare plants and animals, archaeological sites, and important watershed areas. Of particular concern to resource development are areas designated as Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, Wilderness Areas, and Wilderness Study Areas. Protection for Endangered Species is a critical element in all planning efforts. Those species present in the St. George area or in areas near- by include: the desert tortoise, southwestern willow flycatcher, Virgin River chub, and dwarf bearclaw poppy. As the St. George area is depleted and/or deprived of sand and gravel resources through extraction and urbanization respectively, construction costs will rise unless conservation measures are instituted. To avoid the loss of aggregate resources, the UGS is pursuing a program of data gathering and field surveying of surficial deposits to determine tonnage and quality of the remaining sand and gravel resources. The resource information from this program will help land planners, developers, and government officials make informed decisions concerning urban development throughout the region.

Selective in-plant breakage was investigated at a Central Queensland, Australia mine. Component seams and size fractions from in-plant samples were characterized petrographically and probability analysis of vitrinite reflectance data used to track the distribution of seam proportions through the plant. Results show that the 2 seams reported differentially to coarse and fine circuits, mainly as a function of coal type rather than rank. Seams were also preferentially concentrated in different size fractions of the coarse circuit. Breakage in the coarse coal centrifuge generated approximately 4% of -0.5 mm fines, but was not seam specific.

The ninth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the SME Annual Conference & Expo in Minneapolis, MN. A total of 33 students presented their work at the contest. The competition began in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes. The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the contest. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and, as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. As in past years, there are separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates, and the prizes are designated accordingly. At the graduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third through seventh $200 each, and all others $125 each. At the undergraduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third place $250, and all others $125 each.
