Selective flocculation of iron ores is extremely sensitive to the type and the amount of soluble salts in pulp solutions. Chemical precipitation of alkaline earth ions combined with ultrasonic treatment deactivates their adverse effects without using any environmentally ill-defined reagents. The manner in which ultrasonic treatment affects starch adsorption on hematite, dissolution of quartz, and selective flocculation process was investigated. Selective flocculation tests were conducted in the presence of up to 400 ppm calcium ion on a quartz-hematite mixture by precipitation as calcium carbonate, and the role that silicate ion generated by ultrasonic treatment plays in achieving the selectivity of separation is discussed.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the possible application of two relatively new technologies: flat load cells, and improvement seeking computer programs (referred to in the literature as heuristic programs); to a very old problem, inventors control of ball mills. The combination of these two technologies seems most applicable to grate discharge mills operated closed circuit. It is possible that other applications such as controlling the inventory of autogeneous mills might also be found. Direct control of ball mill inventory has been the goal of a number of investigators over many years. Many patents and articles on the subject have claimed success, but operating installations are hard to locate. An excellent review of the advantages and problems of direct inventory control is contained in an article by Oswald and Ziegler (1). Figure 1 is a conventional representation of throughput vs. inventory with other factors such as slurry consistency and rock twee held constant. There are common sense, physical arguments? and experimental evidence supporting the existence of a unimodel curve of this twee? though direct measurement of the shape is difficult and how it moves as rock type changes is riot well known. Figure 2 represents the problem faced by all mass measurements of inventory, a tare weight of about 25 time the inventory mass. Traditionally, coarse wolframite ore processing has been done almost exclusively by gravity concentration methods. However, there has been a depletion of rich and coarse ore reserves and a proportional increase in the mining of low-grade, fine-grained complex ore feeds. This change has resulted in the need for better slime-processing technology. Research and development activities in this area have gained momentum, and recent innovations appear promising. This paper covers the recent innovations that have been made in dealing with tungsten ore slime processing. The new techniques include the application of a centrifugal cone separator, high-intensity wet magnetic separator, the use of phosphonic and arsonic acids as collectors in ultrafine wolframite flotation, and combined processes.

The degree of fragmentation obtained in primary quarry blasting has always been a factor in the speed of digging' the muckpile This paper will discuss a case history of increased production and associated lowered costs from increased fragmentation. The quarry under discussion is fairly new, located in Georgia, and is in the large operation .category. Loading is done by three yard shovels, and, primary crushing by a 48" x 60" haw crusher preceded by a 5' wide feeder. The stone is a hard granite gneiss, of Los Angeles rating 22, and apparent specific gravity is 2.68. The product is shipped to points in that state for railroad ballast, concrete aggregate, and road building stone. Inasmuch as fairly large shovels and a large Jaw were to be utilized, initial drilling and blasting were pointed toward producing fairly large sized muck for this large equipment. This was following a concept somewhat in vogue for some years in the Southeast wherein many large equipment plants would tend towards larger fragmentation, and smaller equipped plants would conversely tend toward attempts at smaller sized rock piles for smaller shovels and crushers.

The Stillwater pt-pd mine and flotation mill are located about 130 km (80 miles) southwest of Billings in Stillwater county, M6ntana~ The pt-pd ore zone stretches about 43 km (27 miles), but varies in thickness from 0 to 6 meters (0 to 20 feet, but generally 3-6 feet) and dips 55-90,degrees from horizontal. The ore is hosted in basic, layered igneous rocks containing about 1% sulfide minerals which include chalcopyrite, pentlandite, pyrrhotite, and minor pyrite. The pt-Pd minerals are intimately associated with these sulfide minerals and are found as precious metal sulfides, tellurides, bismuthnides, and arsenides as well as native Pt metal. Approximately 90 different precious metal minerals have been found, but about 80% of the pd is in solid solution in the pentlandite. The ore assays about 0.1% Cu, 0.1% Ni, 6.2 g Pt/tonne (0.18 Troy ounce Pt/short ton (opt)), 21.3 g Pd/tonne (0.62 opt Pd), 0.21 g Au/tonne (0.006 opt Au), and 0.21 g Rh/tonne (0.006 opt Rh). The ratio of pd to Pt in the Stillwater ore and concentrates is about 3.5.

It is felt that prior to the presentation of the technical portion of this paper, some general information would be of interest. The Sar Cheshmeh Copper Mining Company was founded by the Iranian Government to oversee the design and construction of Iran's first copper smelter complex, which will be another step in the industrialization of Iran. Since this is the first such plant in Iran, Sar Cheshmeh wisely chose to enlist the technical assistance needed in regard to the facilities requiring engineering and operating know-how from outside of Iran. To obtain the foregoing, SCCM signed a contract with Anaconda-Iran, Inc., which was formed by The Anaconda Company for this project. The general scope of this contract covers the overseeing of engineering and design by Parsons-Jurden as well as physical plant construction. In addition to this, the same services were given to water supply and tailings disposal systems which were not included as part of the Parsons-Jurden contract. Anaconda-Iran is also assisting SCCM in setting up a training program for Iranian personnel for plant operations, administration, etc., which .will go on for some time after the plant startup, under the guidance of Anaconda-Iran expatriates. SCCM?s other responsibilities, in respect to the development of this industrial effort, are the building of a townsite for approximately 2200 families, the expected manning requirements, having all the facilities necessary to provide a pleasant life in a remote area. It has been estimated that the manpower for operations will be 2050.

In the high Andes of Peru, two tunnels are being constructed totaling nine kilometers in length at an elevation of over 4,500 meters. The tunnels convey freezing and crystal-clear waters from rainfalls, streams, and lakes for the consumption of Lima. The drill and blast 3-meter wide by 4-meter high tunnels are being driven from both ends through folded and sheared volcanic tuff, andesite, agglomerate,and limestone, where groundwater inflow is high. This paper describes the design geological and groundwater inflow investigations and construction.

A quiet revolution has taken place in the conveyor belt industry, Man-made materials, improved production facilities, better splicing techniques and emphasis on repair and maintenance have all contributed substantially to lowering material handling costs for the mining industry, It wasn't too many years ago that the rubber industry had only cotton for a belt carcass and tree grown rubber for the protective cover. Then came the development of monofilament rayon. This material had desirable elongation and elastic properties and was the first synthetic fiber to be used in place of cotton. But wet strength and other limitations restricted its use, and the conveyor belt industry turned to nylon. Initially, nylon was considered suitable only for the cross threads or filler threads of a belt carcass. Then technical advancements in heat setting and fabric weave created a major change in belt construction. As a result of these advances the industry was able to take advantage of the full tension strength of nylon cord. Another breakthrough in the use of synthetics was the tremendous increase in adhesion resulting from a chemical bond, rather than the limited physical bond available with cotton. But the advantages of nylon had a more Car-reaching effect, We were able to design a two-ply nylon belt that did the work of a four- or five-ply cotton or rayon belt. A six-ply nylon belt now replaces a twelve-ply cotton elevator belt. Arid nylon resists moisture, acid and mildew, It also has excellent resistance to impact and can be produced with controlled elongation and elastic properties that work to great advantage in reduced-ply belt constructions.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed engineering and economic analyses on 130 domestic phosphate mines and deposits, all containing demonstrated resources, of which 73 are in the Southeastern states of Florida and North Carolina, to determine the domestic availability of phosphate rock. Of the total domestic resources studied (6.4 billion tons of recoverable rock) over 60 percent is found in these two Southeastern states. At an estimated cost of $30 per ton, in January 1981 dollars, approximately 1 billion tons of rock is potentially recoverable from Southeastern deposits, increasing to 3 billion tons at $45. In addition, there is nearly 6 billion tons of recoverable rock at the inferred level (some presently unmineable) in Florida and Georgia.

Bioremediation is a complex process which involves mass transfer, chemical and biochemical phenomena. In particular, the adsorption kinetics of a substance by biomass may by model by taking into account: - Enzymatic kinetics type; - Combined kinetics - enzymatic kinetics at the same time with the Monod type biomass growth; - Chemical kinetics for substance adsorption according to Freundlich and Langmuir ad-sorption isotherms; - New empirical kinetics models based on experimental data. In this paper modelling of kinetics of bivalent lead ions on live vegetal biomass (aquatic plant Pistia stratiotes) as well as of hydrocarbons on dead vegetal biomass (pyrolysed nuts) is studied (Stoica, 2004). Modelling was carried out using experimental data and relative equations with an error of 5%.

Queenstake Resources Ltd. has been exploring and mining alluvial gold deposits in the Yukon Territory and British Columbia since 1980. The five mines in production produced, in 1987, a total of 13,222 ounces. This paper will briefly review Queenstake's exploration program, property descriptions and mining methods, environmental concerns and a comparison of costs. (Sueenstake has been successful in developing a cash flow base from these operations that provide the capital for the acquisition and exploration of new, and hopefully, larger scale gold producers. NOTE: The historic alluvial mining unit of ounces per cubic yard and English units of measurement have been used throughout this paper. Dollars are Canadian unless otherwise noted.

Problems of marketing industrial minerals to chemical manufacturers are manifold. In addition to the difficulty of establishing demarcation lines between "crude" and "processed" industrial (nonmetallic) minerals, and "industrial mineral compounds" further uncertainty exists because some chemical manufacturers do not talk the same language as the industrial mineral producer. For example, paint technologists use "rutile" and "anatase" to describe highly refined chemical compounds. The earth scientists use these terms to describe naturally occurring minerals. Further, marketing research problems are intensified because of the overlapping data of the Standard Industrial Classifications (SIC) groups, and the inexactness of "Chemical Industry," "Chemical and Allied Products Industries," and "Chemical Process Industries," which are widely variable in meaning but are often used interchangeably. Bureau of Mines information Circular 8244, "Minerals for Chemical Manufacturing," was the out¬growth of an attempt to unravel some of the problems caused by overlap of statistical data compared with actual industry practices. Using this study as a base, specific industrial mineral applications of some important sub-industry groups were analyzed for the; California chemical industry. Differences between local and national practices were compared. Practices usually differed, depending on cost and availability of alternate minerals, climate, idiosyncrasies, local regulations, and other conditions. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8260, "Mineral Fillers for the California Pesticides Industry," is the first such analysis of, a sub-industry group. Other such studies are underway. Obtaining national data is easy, but to be able to compile meaningful information which can be revealed on a regional and State basis generally is difficult and often impossible. This paper will briefly emphasize some of the industrial mineral problems encountered, and bring out the needs and benefits being derived through the continued cooperation of authoritative officials concerned with supply and consumption of industrial minerals in government and industry.

"Wireframe construction is an integral part of resource estimation. Wireframes control domaining of samples and data for geostatistical analysis and grade estimation. They may also provide 3D representations of lithology and grade domains. Thus, the way in which a wireframe is constructed has implications throughout the resource estimation process. Proper construction technique and understanding of wireframing processes should be a high priority in a model workflow. Herein is presented an overview of two main categories of wireframes: implicit and explicit. Construction differences between these two types are highlighted. Factors affecting the choice between the two wireframe types will be discussed, including data quantity, data distribution, and sampling technique. Deposit geometry also plays an important part in wireframe construction. The role of geologic knowledge, cross section orientation, and deposit type in regards to wireframe construction will be discussed. The effect of wireframe type on resource estimation will be examined. Finally, best practices for creating meaningful solids that contribute to a reasonable grade estimation are outlined. INTRODUCTION Wireframes are essential to many types of resource estimations. They provide a way to delineate a deposit into various domains. Domaining can be done by lithologic or geologic units, structures or structural zones, or by grade. Domaining is important for geostatistical analysis and grade estimation of a deposit. The purpose of domaining is to analyze and estimate like data with like. Grade distribution patterns may vary by lithology or by proximity to or existence within structural zones. Properly constructed wireframes are therefore a fundamental necessity to a properly executed geostatistical analysis and resource estimation model. The choices made in construction of wireframes have a trickle-down effect on the entire model and should be made according to best practices for the deposit type at hand.TYPES OF WIREFRAMES Explicit The term “explicit wireframe” is used in this paper to indicate wireframes that are constructed by the modeler. This usually involves the modeler drawing the wireframes “by hand”, e.g. still utilizing some sort of computer aided drawing software, but with the modeler making all decisions about the size, shape, and positon of the wireframe. These wireframes are drawn based on some type of key variable that the modeler determines is important to their system. Often, this key variable may be a lithologic unit that controls mineralization, an observable structural zone, or a grade cutoff. Explicit wireframes are generally constructed as a series of shapes drawn on 2D planes or cross sections that are then connected into a 3D shape. Figure 1 shows an example of an explicit wireframe that was drawn based on a grade cutoff on 2D sections (Figure 1a), then joined into a 3D shape (Figure 1b)."

Relatively large amounts of such hydrocarbons as fuel oils are often needed in flotation of low rank coals. The amount of oil can be decreased considerably by using surfactants as promotors. The reagents which are good candidates as surfactants to promote hydrophobicity can also act as emulsifying and wetting agents. Since the physical and chemical variables influence various sub-processes in different ways, their influence on the performance parameters is complex. The results of laboratory tests are presented to show that the dual role of reagents can be judiciously exploited to increase both the recovery and grade of clean coal. The mode and order of reagent addition is critical in enhancing their efficacy as flotation promotors. The results demonstrate the benefits of proper conditioning of the pulp prior to flotation.

The Indian Head fine has been in existence since 1922. For over 56 years there have been North Dakota people mining coal at this same location. The area affected will fit inside a circle 5 km in diameter, and the coal is lignite. The seam thickness has varied from 2.4 m to 3.65m, and the overburden from 6 m to 30 m in depth. me Lignite coal which is being mined at the Indian Head Mine is from 15.8 x l0 6 to 16.7 x 10 6 J per kg; it has a moisture content of 33 to 38%; an ash content of 5 to 10%; and a sulfur content of from 0.5 to 0.7%. The moisture content and the fact that we crush the coal co a top size of 14 cm x 0, are two of the characteristics or the product which cause it to freeze and remain inside of the railroad cars on the slope sheets. The market for the coal initially was almost entirely local coal sales. That is, coal was sold to people in the area who used the lignite to heat their homes, stores, offices, schools, and churches. Back in the early 1920's, there were no stoker-fed boilers, or pulverized fuel boilers, as we have in today?s marketplace. Basically, all of the coal was sold as lump coal, pieces about 30 to 35 cm square, to be used in furnaces: and nut coal with a top size of about 7.5 cm to 10 cm to be used in the old kitchen cookstove. All of the coal fines, less than 5 cm, were screened out and layed onto a pile. There was no market for the smaller sizes of the lignite coal. It has been our experience that when the coal is in lumps or chunks larger than 7.5 cm to 10 cm, there is a very slight possibility of freezing. That is the chunks themselves freeze, but by their nature, they do not cling to one another or form large masses of frozen material which are difficult to remove from the slope sheers of the railroad cars.

The pressure/vacuum lysimeter is being used as an effective vadose zone monitoring device for mining heap leach facilities, tailing disposal ponds and tailing waste sites. Their use has proven reliable for baseline data collection, early warning leakage detection and analyzing geochemical variations in the vadose zone. The lysimeter structure utilizes a closed cylindrical chamber made of PVC or inert material. The soil water intake portion of the cylinder is made of a porous material of low permeability. The application of vacuum or pressure to the unit is via two access tubes from the ground surface. Available soil moisture is drawn by vacuum through porous material into the lysimeter chamber and then collected from the access tubes. Case studies show their usefulness for monitoring around a uranium tailing pond constructed in glacial till material, under heap leach pads and pregnant, barren, and overflow ponds, and investigating the movement of contaminant moisture through old tailing deposits. Relatively easy to install and sample, regulatory agencies and facility operators are accepting and negotiating for their application as a site integrity monitoring device and unsaturated zone research tool. Their use at heap leach facilities lends credibility to solution balance calculations when considering a leachate loss of 5 or 10 percent can make or break a mine's profitability.

A new kinetic approach to simulation of fracture is given. The main object of the simulation is forecasting transformation of ore lumps size distribution in squeezing of ore layer between two planes. The approach rests on fundamental principles of energy and mass conservation and on new ideas about fracture physics connected with fractal geometry. On this base an integro-differen tial equation of layer crushing kinetics is formulated. This equation is similar to well-known kinetic equation of grinding, but here we use elastic energy density in place of time as an independent variable while selection function is considered by us to be dependent on this variable. Properties of the equation have been investigated by us and its analytical solution has been found. It allows to compute simultaneously both the evolution of the size distribution process of squeezing and force-displacement diagram. Results of theoretical calculations provide a good fit with experimental data.

INTRODUCTION In looking over the diversity of the papers that are being presented during this meeting on The Industrial Practice of Fine Coal Processing one cannot help but be impressed with the progress the industry has made in beneficiating fine raw coals, and in the number of innovations that are under study to increase recovery and to improve the quality of the finest size particles produced at a preparation plant. Those who are not in our industry, who look at the technical program, might be confused, when they see that the papers include such topics as cleaning to zero and heavy media cyclone cleaning 28M x 100M; application and performance of fine coal jigs, tables, hydrocyclones, spirals, and flotation; filtration, dewatering and thermal drying; and ancilliary aspects such as fines handling, instrumentation and process control plus screening and liberation. This is an observation and not a criticism of the diversity of papers being presented. The program fits within the parameters of fine coal preparation as the term "coal preparation" is defined, but perhaps not as the term "fine coal" is defined. Admittedly these definitions are sometimes loose. However, each should be made more definitive if a meaningful fine coal preparation overview is to be possible. COAL PREPARATION DEFINED In the opinion of the writer, the term "coal preparation" should be defined as including all work activities that are performed on all components of a run-of-mine coal from the time it leaves a surface reserve or an underground portal, until all components are either ready for shipment or are stowed on, or in the earth in an environmentally acceptable manner. This definition excludes the work that is performed to improve coal quality or handleability inside the mine or pit. This work is commonly called "face" or "pit" preparation. FINE COAL DEFINED The term "fine coal" means different things to different people. In the past, anthracite finer than No. 3 Buckwheat (3/16 in.) was considered fines which often were discarded from the breaker as an unsalable by product; and bituminous coals finer that about 1/4 in. (slack) were either discarded or sold at cost to prevent an accumulation of "no bills" which referred to a product having no immediate sale. Although a standard definition of "fine coal" is yet to be accepted by the industry, a designation of coals by particle-size range has evolved through the wide use of three-circuit flowsheets, wherein the optimum size range by washer type determines the size fractions: a coarse-coal circuit for the plus 3/8 in., a -11- coal circuit for the 3/8 in. x 28 Mesh, and a fine-coal circuit for the remaining 28 Mesh x 0. Logically, the term "fine coal" should refer to some resultant size fraction or some top size by zero. This definition should include a 28 Mesh x 0 feed to a flotation cell but should exclude a 28 x 100 Mesh size fraction fed to a heavy media cyclone. Failure to include the resultant sizes in the definition precludes accounting of the full range of particle sizes present in the feed to the plant. Since the 28 Mesh x 0 fraction is treated in the final circuit of the three discreet washing circuits, now almost always used in U.S. commercial applications, and since it contains all of its resultant sizes, in the writer's opinion, it should be designated "fine coal". FINE COAL CLEANING Cleaning coal fines, which in the past was at best marginally profitable, is now an essential part of coal preparation strategy for a number of reasons : 1. High-calcium limestone has been intermittently produced from the Monarch quarry since the late 1800s. Initial production was used in sugar processing and for a smelter located near Salida, Colorado. During the 1920s, Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I) began to exploit the deposit as a source of flux stone for its blast furnace steel operations at Pueblo. The deposit was operated for many years as a captive quarry by CF&I. In 1984, CF&I closed the quarrying operations at Monarch; flux stone was no longer required since the blast furnaces were taken off line in 198 1. In 1994, Colorado Lime Company, a subsidiary of United States Lime and Minerals, Inc. acquired the property. Limestone was mined from the Castle Butte Member of the Leadville Limestone (Lower Missippian). Some high- magnesium dolomite was also mined during WWII from the Redcliff Dolomite Member which directly underlies the Castle Butte. Past production was from both an upper and lower quarry at elevations ranging from 10,000 to 11,000 feet (3,048 m-3,353 m) mean sea level (m.s.1.). The reserves at Monarch quarry are in a dip slope deposit, occupying the northwest slope of Monarch Hill. The structural geology of the deposit is complex on both a region- al and mine scale. The reserves are located on the eastern limb of the Syncline Hill syncline. The beds on this limb of the structure strike to the northeast and dip to the northwest from 30 to 45 degrees. A major reverse fault separates the reserves into an upper and lower deposit. Numerous smaller normal and reverse faults cut the deposit, requiring a flexible mine plan. At the Monarch quarry, the Castle Butte Member con- sists of two stratigraphic units. The Upper unit (Mlu) is a thick-bedded, fine-grained crystalline dolomitic limestone from 0 to 300 feet (0-90 m) thick. The unit generally has an Si02 content of less than 4 percent. A bedded chert horizon and a karst horizon at the base of the unit locally raise the Si02 content as high as 20 percent. The underlying Quarry Stone unit (Mlq) is a light-gray, massive, bedded, calcilutite/micrite limestone from 90 to 130 feet (27-40 m) thick. The Quarry Stone unit is remarkably uniform chemically throughout it's entire thickness. Average analysis is CaC03 - 95 percent, MgC03 - 3.5 percent, and Si02 - 0.5 percent. The Footwall dolomite unit (Mld) of the Redcliff Member of the Leadville Limestone is a dark gray to black, blocky, medium-to-thick-bedded, calcilutite/micrite dolomite from 150 to 180 feet thick (46-55 m). The upper 100 feet (30 m) of the unit is a low-silica facies with an average Si02 content of less than 0.5 percent. MgC03 content is con- sistent at 39.8 percent throughout the upper 50 feet (15 m) of the unit but varies from 15 percent to 39.8 percent in the lower portion (50 to 100 feet [15-30 m]) of the low-silica facies. The lowest portion of the unit, 100 feet (30 m) to base of unit is high in silica and is not considered chemical grade. Current in-place, surface-minable reserves at the quarry are estimated to be 14 million short tons (st) (13 million metric tons [mt]) of limestone and 50 million st (45 million mt) of dolomite. A 1.4 million st (1.3 million mt) stockpile of finely crushed limestone is also present on the property. Colorado Lime is presently processing approximately 2,000 st (1,800 mt) per month from the crushed limestone stockpile. This material is pulverized and sold to underground coal mines for use as rock dust, some of this product is also used for environmental purposes. Limestone mining is scheduled to resume in spring of 2000.

It is common practice, and even legally required in many jurisdictions, to design two-lane haul roads in open pit mines to three and a half times the widest dimension of the haul trucks operating on the road. In open pit gold mines with high strip ratios, the road width has a significant impact on the economics of a design. It is possible to minimize the flattening of the highwall if the road width is reduced, assuming the width used is not needed to flatten the slopes for geotechnical purposes. With the use of autonomous haulage and pullouts, it may be possible to operate safely and efficiently on a reduced road width of two times the width of the hauling equipment.
