The Wobbler Feeder is a comparatively new materials handling and separating device. It is essentially a materials separating or scalping machine, particularly adaptable to separation of oversize particles from mine-run ore and to the separation of oversize materials from overburden, where the removal of oversize materials is necessary, as is the case in conveyor stripping. In construction, the Wobbler Feeder is simply a set of transverse bars of manganese steel, or other wear-resisting alloy steel, each having an elliptical cross-section with the major axes of adjacent bars displaced by ninety degrees so when rotating in unison, the pre-determined space between the bars remains constant.

The development and scale up of hydrothermal synthesis processes for manufacture of high performance materials is discussed. Traditional hydrometallurgical processes are reviewed, leading into a discussion of process development concerns for manufacture of modern materials. Three case studies are presented, including a piezoelectric ceramic, barium titanate for multiyear capacitors, and high purity chromium metal. Factors for selection of reactor design are presented, as well as results of scale-up studies on the three products.

The gypsum industry makes significant contribution to the wealth of our nation. This non-metallic mineral ranks in the highest order with America's most precious resources. Evidence of this is borne out by the fact that gypsum is a vitally necessary element in the building, industrial and agricultural industries. In 1967, the United States consumed 14 million tons of this valuable ore. Of .this amount 69% was required by the building industry for the manufacture of building materials. An additional 21% was directed to the industrial market, for the manufacture of Portland Cement and for other industrial uses. The remaining 10% was used for agricultural purposes.

New Zealand is a small, almost pristinely pure country environmentally speaking. It is blessed with an abundance of clear waterways, lush green vegetation and fresh clean air. It is a country in which agriculture and forestry predominate, and mining developments have to be introduced prepared to answer in considerable detail the question "How will this proposal affect the New Zealand environment as we know it today". Those who make the legislation have the difficult problem of establishing standards at a level which will maintain as far as possible the status quo without unduly inhibiting the developments currently approaching the starting line. We have been fortunate in some sense in that since the demise of the early gold rush days by the 1920's, little mineralisation of a complex nature has been uncovered in New Zealand. Coal fields have been developed in the central North Island, and on the West Coast and Southland regions of the South Island. A ban on large scale open cast mines in the Coromandel area has restricted mining in that highly prospective area, although three large gold prospects have got underway elsewhere in the last three years. There is no other ore processing being undertaken at present. Some recent proposals involving lead, gold and silver in complex arseno­ sulphides have failed to get the necessary approvals and have been discarded. Our ore processing problems are therefore straightforward ones, and confine themselves to acid drainage, mercury handling and disposal, and cyanide.

The HILTI OneStep rockbolt was implemented for roadway development in German deep coal mines in 2004. The development by HILTI Company is based on a technical joint venture with RAG Deutsche Steinkohle AG. The technical development of a One-Step bolting system was required for weak strata conditions at the roadway development face. Standard resin bolting has reached the limit of performance when boreholes are squeezed and cannot be filled with capsules. In some cases the heading face is brittle and requires additional support for installation of the bolts and a person working immediately next to the borehole. The Hilti One-Step system allows automated and safe processing at the heading front and provides the key technique to avoid these problems.

A WINDOWS-based object-oriented expert system for prefeasibility evaluation of hard rock mines is being developed at the Western Field Operations Center (WFOC) of the Bureau of Mines. Designed for use with the Bureau's Cost Estimating System (CES), this expert system assists an evaluator in choosing an underground mining method, and the related design parameters. The system provides the engineering and design guidelines necessary for an evaluator to perform a prefeasibility type cost estimate.

The first successful heap leach of silver ores in the State of Arizona has been under continuous operation since early 1976 at the State of Maine Mine, two miles southwest of Tombstone, Arizona. The silver produced from leaching old mine dumps at this property vas the first in the Tombstone mining district to achieve a 999+ purity. While cyanide leaching of silver and gold ores is a time-proven accepted practice, a relatively new method of treatment called "heap" leaching was employed. Heap leaching is a comparatively inexpensive fast way to recover precious metals from low grade material.

When maintenance of a plant or operation is under discussion immediately three "M's", all in short supply, are brought to mind - money, men and markets. This paper will present what currently is being done at our plants and its effect on the 3 "M's". Examination of coal realization figures (F.O.B. Mine) from 1945 to the present reveals the fact that open and free competition can and will meet market conditions. The industry, without benefit of advantages afforded tax and transportation wise to oil and gas, remains the backbone of the energy market of United States. Figure No. 1 shows the realization figures from 1945 through 1962 compared to the hourly earnings. Note that through 1945 to 1948 F.O.B. prices increased $1.93 per ton while hourly earnings increased $.66 per hour. Since 1948 (with the ex¬ception of 1957) F.O.B. prices have declined $.45/ton, while hourly earnings have increased $1.23 per hour. Basically the maintenance men possibly represent the highest increment rate in the overall hourly earning.

Large deposits of natural zeolites may provide cost-effective alternatives for treatment of soil and water contaminated ) with heavy metals and radionuclides. Research on the Bikini atoll demonstrated that addition of clinoptilolite to the soil significantly reduces cesium uptake by plants. Re- search on the potential use of zeolites in soils at Bunker Hill, ID indicated only minor benefits at very high contamination levels vs. US Bureau of Mines (USBM) work on the use of zeolites for treatment of mine waste waters emphasized problems with natural waters that previous studies have not addressed. High levels of competing calcium in natural waters significantly decrease the effectiveness of zeolites for heavy metal sorption and may limit the usefulness in these applications.

INTRODUCTION The practice of injecting chemical grouts into permeable soils in order to stabilize them for tunnel construction is a common procedure in Great Britain, Europe and Japan. In this technique, the grout penetrates the soil in a fluid condition, but hardens or "sets-up" in about one hour due to a chemical reaction. As a result, the soil, is strengthened and made less pervious, and this, in turn, reduces ground surface movements, limits ground water flow, and controls movements of the heading during tunnel construction. It is only within the last five years or so that this technology has been used in the United States. Most of the applications have been involved in the work for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) subway construction. The experience gained from this work is, in many instances, unique and should serve to guide use of the grouting technology in future projects. This paper documents five WMATA case histories; information is provided as to the soil conditions, method of treatment, reason for treatment, and tunnel performance. Locations of the five projects covered by this study are indicated in Figure 1. All are within the boundaries of the District of Columbia and involve soft ground tunnel construction. Basic information for the case histories is given in Table 1. Tunnel sizes and depths below the ground surface as well as general soil conditions are similar in all instances. The tunnels are about six meters in diameter and are located so that the crown is five to ten m below the ground surface. The soils typically consist of alternating sand, clay and silty sand strata. The feasibility of exploiting a mineral deposit by developing a surface mine is closely related to the environmental protection and land reclamation costs. This issue has utmost importance for West Macedonia Lignite Centre (WMLC) of Greece, where there is still a lot of interest for opening of new mines and for further development of the existing open-pits. The decision-making process in these cases can be based on a decision tree that takes into consideration the various cost components of environmental management, the alternative solutions, the environmental permits and the cost reports of environmental management actions carried out so far. Moreover, the mine planning procedure is affected indirectly by numerous uncertain environmental and socioeconomic parameters, such as the delays caused by the bureaucratic procedures and the settlement of arguments in the Court.

Health and safety of workers in mineral industry in the U.S. is still a vey important issue as Mining along with Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing and Construction industries have contributed most of the fatal occupational injuries ill between 1980 - 1995 (Worker Health Chartbook, 2000). Health and safety issues, especially for the mining or related excavation industries, arise either from exposures of the human workers to the contaminants liberated or generated by mining operations that have adverse effects on human health (for example coal dust etc.) or from the exposures of the human workers to hazardous working environment that constitutes mining operations (for example blasting etc.). One of the biggest challenges is to understand the combinatorial effect of numerous work-condition (e.g. exposure to dust) and human-factor (e.g. smoking habit) variables on a health or safety-condition variable (e.g. incidence rate of a disease). This paper uses an example dataset on Coal miners' cough problem to illustrate the applicability of Generalized Linear Modeling (GLM) in understanding the relation between cough and other response variables, such as, age, height, smoking habits, time of underground exposure etc.

Unlike many other heavy metals, gold can be profitably mined in small operations because of the prices. One mining technique that seems ideally suited for small deposits of gold and for certain large, lowgrade oxidized disseminated deposits is solution mining. Solution mining generally requires lower capital investment and operating costs than conventional mining and milling and is safer and less degrading to the environment. Although gold has long been recovered by cyanide leaching following conventional milling, solution mining as discussed here gained momentum only in the past two decades, during which time alternative lixiviants instead of cyanide have been researched. Chamberlain and Pojar (1981) classified solution mining systems used today as three types, namely heap, dump, and in-situ leaching.

The Geomechanics Classijication (RMR System) (Bieniawski, 1979) was modified for entry and roof support design in underground coal mines. Adjustment multipliers were introduced to incorporate the influence of high horizontal stresses and the roof support reinforcement into the existing classification system. Sixty- two case histories of standing and fallen mine roof were collected from two mines in the northern Appalachian coalfield. Twenty-seven engineering and geologic parameters were recorded for each case. A partial correlation analysis was carried out on the cases to establish which parameters have a significant im- pact on the stand-up time of supported coal mine roof. Survival analysis, a statistical technique used in medical research to assess the effect of a drug or treatment on a patient's life expectancy, was conducted together with stepwise multiple regression to derive values for the adjustment multipliers. A practical example is included to illustrate the application of the modified Geomechanics Classification to underground coal mine design.

Prolonged exposure to high concentrations of respirable coal mine dust causes coal workers’ pneumoconiosis and silicosis. Underground coal mine roof bolter operators are more prone to elevated exposure to coal and silica dust. The canopy air curtain (CAC) was developed by NIOSH to protect roof bolter operators from the exposure. The CAC supplies filtered air over the breathing zone of the operator. This dilutes the high coal dust concentrations and provides for an impenetrable air curtain. Many studies have been carried out to improve CAC efficiency. However, field test has shown variable dust control efficiencies indicating rooms to further improve due to the nonuniform airflow distribution across the plenum and ineffective perimeter flow. This study therefore redesigns the CAC with optimized flow distribution that effectively protects roof bolters from coal dust exposures. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are used to optimize the uniformity of airflow distribution across the plenum to achieve the best possible uniformity. A lab experiment validates the CFD model and confirms the ability of this design to reduce floor dust pickup, prevent external wind infiltration, and offer an improved protection efficiency

Belt conveyors offer a reliable means and often do the most economical job for providing continuous bulk material transport, whenever the terrain permits their installation. The ore processing, construction and mining industries use belt conveyors to carry all types of material, from small to large tonnages. Most of the conveyors Fluor Mining & Metals, Inc. designs for metallurgical plants are in the in-plant category, of limited length and medium tonnages, and use fabric carcass conveyor belting. Belt widths can range from 24 to 60 inches Generally, the layout and design of these belt conveyors present no unusual problems. However, calculations for belt tension and horsepower, design of materials transfers, and the sizings and layouts of belt pulley stations and their drives are time consuming.

There has been a significant progress in the use of mathematical modeling and simulation in the minerals industry in the last decade. Process models have moved from academic world to important industrial tools. This paper reviews the status of mineral processing simulators and recent progress in simulator development and applications is discussed. The simulation for process design and optimisation is now an established technique, as evidenced by its increasing use of practising engineers through commercially available simulator software. The paper presents a systematic approach to the process study procedure for the control system development, clarified by practical case examples calculated by SimCon - a novel steady-state simulator for mineral processes. Examples of the application of SimCon in drawing flowsheets, calculating mass balances and making simulations for grinding and flotation processes are presented. At the end of the paper, the state-of-the-art and the future of computer-aided pro- cess study at mineral processing plants is discussed. The US Bureau of Mines (Bureau) is conducting research to evaluate the potential for developing an in situ leach mining process that will selectively extract manganese from oxide ores, leaving gangue relatively undisturbed. To accomplish this, a geochemical approach based on deposit-specific information, such as mineralogy and geology, is used to constrain the operating parameters of the system. Among the studies being conducted are: • leaching experiments to define reaction mechanisms and kinetics, • detailed petrologic characterization at the microscopic scale to assess manganese distribution and leaching efficiencies, • deposit characterization and evaluation, and • development of potential manganese recovery schemes. Data from these studies are being used to develop engineering design information for an in situ mining process. Specific details of the Bureau's research project are discussed, including results obtained to date.

Column flotation testing was conducted on the flotation feed slurry obtained from a preparation plant located in the Southern Illinois coal basin. The column flotation tests were conducted using three different bubble generating devices: a static sparger, a gas saver and a foam jet. Each of these devices was tested with three different types of frother and various column operating variables to provide maximum combustible recovery, minimum product ash and maximum pyrite rejection. The results show that column flotation provided improved flotation performance, in terms of combustible recovery as well as ash and pyrite rejection, for each of the bubble generating devices. However, the effectiveness of each bubble generating device was dependent on the type of frother used. Alcohol frothers were most effective for use with the static sparger, somewhat less effective for the foam jet and ineffective for the gas saver. Glycol frothers were effective for all three bubble generating systems, providing high combustible recovery (>90%); low clean-coal ash (4-6% ash) and high pyrite rejection (70-80%).

Possibilities of electric pulse disintegration are discussed with emphasis on high selectivity of the process as compared to mechanical comminution methods especially when applied to polymineral ores. Physical explanation of this phenomenon is suggested. The authors present results of some experimental tests illustrating regularity of this phenomenon irrespective of origin of ores or dissemination pattern of valuable minerals including both dissipated and accessory minerals. Some operating plants applying this principle are described the plants used either for mineral research purposes or for obtaining pure monomineral fractions or for treatment of gems to be faceted. Obstacles for implementation of this technology are mentioned.
