Spirals have become one of the most popular methods for treating fine coal. Unfortunately, spirals tend to produce an undesirably high specific gravity cut point and often misplace significant amounts of coal and/or rock. In the present study, a process-engineering tool known as linear circuit analysis was used to identify problems with traditional spiral circuits and to suggest alternative configurations. These analyses indicate that a modified rougher-cleaner circuit incorporating a middlings recycle stream offers the best option for improving performance while maintaining a reasonable circulating load. In light of this finding, a full-scale test circuit was installed and evaluated at an existing preparation plant. Data obtained from the plant tests indicate that the new spiral circuit can simultaneously reduce the cut point and improve separation efficiency. Preliminary economic analysis show that the new circuit provides an attractive payback on capital investment.

The mining workforce experiences high rates of hazardous noise exposure and hearing loss. However, previous studies have identified specific behavioral and attitudinal barriers that keep miners from effectively acting to prevent their own hearing loss. NIOSH has developed several new hearing loss prevention tools and interventions that specifically target these barriers to prevention. The NIOSH Hearing Loss Simulator addresses motivation to take action and knowledge about the consequences of noise exposure. The QuickFit earplug test device and QuickFitWeb online hearing protection tester address barriers to effective earplug and earmuff use by verifying at least 15 decibels of protection. The NIOSH Roll-Pull-Hold technique helps miners obtain better protection through an easy-to-remember set of steps that improves attenuation by 9 decibels. The ?Inquiring Ears Want to Know? fact sheet helps miners to understand audiograms and to use them to maintain their hearing health. Each of these interventions can be used within the context of a comprehensive hearing loss prevention program.

Lead and zinc have been mined for over 90 years in parts of the Lower Benue rift in southeastern Nigeria. However, there has been little interest in the sustainability of the environment and the inhabitants of the host communities. Adverse effects include soil and food crop contamination, lack of education, poor healthcare, unemployment, and no access to potable water. This work suggests practicable mitigation strategies to ameliorate these negative effects and promote environmental sustainability.

INTRODUCTION The Ningyo-toge Mine is located in the western part of Honshu, about 800 km from Tokyo. Since the discovery of uranium ore deposit at Ningyo-toge in 1955, different kinds of mining and milling tests have been carried out. A new pilot plant of milling and UF6 conversion is also being under construction. Operations are scheduled to start by the end of this year. In 1979, the uranium enrichment pilot plant was constructed at Ningyo-toge and test operations have started. Thus, the Ningyo-toge area is assigned to undertake the Research and Development of the upstream of the nuclear fuel cycle in Japan. PNC has been strengthening its security measures more than ever. This paper will focus on the disposal of wasted material, especially on the disposal of heap leaching residue, in Japan. URANIUM ORE DEPOSITS The uranium of the Ningyo-toge Mine is characterized genetically by epigenetic sedimentary type deposits. They occur in the host rock of Neogene tertiary fluviatile conglomerates and sandstones which unconformably overlies the Mesozoic-Palaeogene granitic basement covered with lucustrine deposits and volcanic ejecta. More than 12 deposits have been found over the area of approximately 160 km2, and distribution of the deposits are strongly controlled by the so-called channel structure, probably remnants of paleo-streams on the denudation surface of the underlying grantic basement. Each ore body has different shape and dimension respectively, but about 2-3 meters thickness with the average grade of 0.05-0.2% U308 is common feature of the ore bodies. The ore is soft and loose, and it is composed of common rock forming minerals of allogenic origin and their altered products. The chemical composition of the ore depends on the constituents of the country rocks or the pebbles. A primary mineral, ningyoite and secondary mineral, autunite are major ore minerals, although three primary tetravalent minerals and thirteen secondary hexavalent minerals have also been detected. MINING EXPERIMENT Since 1959, various types of underground mining tests have been carried out at Ningyo-toge Mine. The room and pillar method was safe and simple, although the uranium ore recovery was below 70%. After experiment of the retreating long-wall method and slicing mining method, it was found that the modified long wall method was the most appropriate for the underground mining of the Ningyo-toge uranium deposits. This method was completed successfully to increase efficiency up to 2 or 3 times, as compared to conventional methods. MILLING EXPERIMENT In 1964, a small test mill was constructed at Ningyo-toge, and a milling experiment using the Ningyo-toge uranium ore was started. Re-modelling of equipments and improvement of the process lead to the establishment of the technique of the so-called wet process, and produce UF4 directly from the ore. The flow diagram is shown in Fig. 1.

INTRODUCTION With each passing year, the general public becomes increasingly aware of the potential hazards associated with many products and services previously considered unharmful. This new consciousness is especially evident in the workplace, both as the result of advances in scientific understanding and the influx of concerned, responsible professionals into the labor movement. For example, data produced by epidemiologists doing retrospective mortality studies which related mortality to toxic substance exposures has often been the prime motivating factor behind reductions in exposure standards. This certainly has been the historical case with many radiation exposure standards, including the limitations set for "Working Level" exposure. The concept of "Working Level" was introduced in PHS Publication No. 494 as a result of both the difficulty in relating radiation units to biological effects and the complexity of interaction of radon daughters with the physical environment. WORKING LEVEL One working level is defined as any combination of radon daughters in one liter of air that will alternately release 1.7 x 105 MEV of alpha energy during decay of 210pb (RaD). Its usefulness is that working level can be readily measured in both the field and the laboratory. Because of this, existing occupational exposure standards for radon daughters in both the U. S. and other countries use working level as their basis. In the U. S., the last twenty years has witnessed a significant reduction in radiation exposure standards from 120 working level months to 4 working level months per year. New international standards are being proposed that would be only slightly higher than these current U. S. standards. POTENTIAL EXPOSURES TO RADON DAUGHTERS The universal use of nuclear power, along with the transfer of nuclear technology to developing nations, has significantly increased the demand for fuels. As a result, uranium mining operations have expanded and increased numbers of miners are regularly exposed to radon daughters. In addition to potential exposures in uranium mines, other deep mines such as tin, gold, platinum and tungsten, also have potential exposures due to the distribution of uranium and its accompanying radium throughout much of the earth's crust. The energy crisis has also prompted interest in general population exposure to radon daughters in buildings. Many homeowners, using additional insulation and caulking to seal cracks and conserve energy, have reduced indoor ventilation to the point where working level exposure could become significant, especially in homes with unventilated crawl spaces. In fact, several serious exposure situations have occurred where mine tailings were used for building materials. MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES Historically, rapid and convenient measurement techniques have been actively sought to improve the ability of ventilation engineers to limit mining exposures through ventilation control. A number of measurement techniques have been developed, including the Kusnetz method (further elaborated by Shalaynev) and techniques developed by Rolle and Tsivoglou. All, however, suffer from similar handicaps that prevent their usefulness in the mining environment. Their main limitation, in terms of minimizing employee exposure, is the elapsed time from the start of sampling until the results can be calculated. It is usually 40 to 90 minutes. This time delay presents both serious economic limitations as well as the potential for exposing workers to high radon daughter concentrations until calculations are completed and corrections made. Further reducing the utility of the Kusnetz and Tsivoglou techniques is the need for tedious calculations that increase the possibility of human error along with the need for cumbersome sampling equipment that is not ideally suited to the mining environment. INSTANT WORKING LEVEL METER To alleviate these problems, the idea of an Instant Working Level Meter was conceived by several groups. Several such instruments were proposed, built, and tested with disappointing results. Although the concepts behind them were sound, the instruments simply failed to measure working level without excessive distortion. In addition, their cost was relatively high, gamma background presented a problem, and sophisticated computations were necessary to determine working level. In short, these systems lacked the design engineering that would make them suitable for the demands of a mining environment.

INTRODUCTION The support of openings in weak sandstones can be achieved by spraying on a liquid grout which will soak in and harden to form a shell. In the St. Peter sandstone of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota compressive strength is increased from about 0.7 MPa (100 psi) to over 7 MPa (1000 psi) to depths of 152 mm (6 in.). A shell of this strength and thickness can pro¬vide support much as shotcrete does but at lower cost. If the spray-grouted shell is inadequate for the support needed, it provides a good base for shotcrete application, which is often difficult in weak or friable sand¬stones because the fresh shotcrete peels off along with a thin layer of sandstone. The spray-grouted technique was initially developed at the Civil and Mineral Engineering Dept. of the University of Minnesota using funds provided by RANN Div. of the National Science Foundation. It was used as temporary support in a 3-m (10-ft) wide, 3700-m (12,000-ft) long storm water drain tunnel by the Minneapolis Sewer Construction Dept. Much of the field development at this construction project was carried out with the cooperation of the personnel of the city of Minneapolis. It also was used for temporary support in a 3.3-m (11-ft) wide, 1800-m (6000-ft) long storm water tunnel built in 1978-1980 for the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation in Minneapolis. In 1975, 2000 m (6500 ft) of 1.5-m (5-ft) wide utility tunnels were spray-grouted for final lining. A 50-m (150-ft) long, 1.2-m (4-ft) wide test tunnel built at the university in 1974 was sprayed for half its length and is being observed for long-term behavior which to date (1981) is good. GROUT MATERIALS The requirements for the liquid grout are more severe than those for injection grouting. Besides being able to penetrate the rock and develop sufficient strength, it must have the following properties: (1) be nontoxic, noncombustible, and have a low odor for spraying under¬ground; (2) have controllable viscosity and setting time for adjusting to the permeability of the sandstone and the required depth of penetration; and (3) must "wet" the sandstone and develop capillary "draw" to penetrate to the required depth. A sodium silicate-based grout with the proper setting agent meets these requirements in the local St. Peter sandstone which has a uniform grain size dis¬tribution curve with D,,, = 0.1 mm, permeability of about 10 to 20 darcys, a porosity of about 25%, and less than 5% of silt size or smaller. It is 97 to 99% pure SiO2. The grout mix consists of Philadelphia Quartz Co. Type N sodium silicate and Celtite 55 Terraset Spray Grade (SG) distributed by Celtite Inc., Cleveland, OH. A volume mix ratio of 100:9:125 for sodium silicate to setting agent to water produces a grout with two to four centipoise viscosity, and initial set at 20°C of 20 min. Setting time is temperature dependent, being longer at lower temperatures, but can be adjusted by varying the setting agent concentration a few percentage points. APPLICATION The application is simple. Spray the grout on the surface until the desired penetration is achieved. Penetration rates of about 5 mm (0.2 in.) per min. are realized in the St. Peter sandstone for up to 152 mm (6 in.) of penetration (30 min. of spraying). The set time must be longer than the spraying time. The spray nozzle should be moved back and forth at a rate that minimizes runoff due to surface buildup. Both a single large hand-propelled nozzle and multiple small machine propelled nozzles have been used successfully. The pumping and mixing equipment used consisted of: (1) a hand-held, hand-pumped, 11-L (3-gal) gar¬den sprayer for test patches (mix by shaking); (2) 76-L (20 gal) batch mixing in barrels with small electric pumps for spraying and mixing; (3) two component pumps consisting of Hypro Model 5300 piston pumps (Hypro Pump Co., St. Paul, MN) on a common shaft driven by an electric motor. The sodium silicate is premixed with a portion of the water and the setting agent is mixed with the rest of the water. The two components are combined and mixed just before the nozzle; and (4) a proportioner metering the setting agent just before the nozzle with the water and sodium silicate premixed and pumped from the surface. The proportioner permits the bulk of the grout to be pumped through a single pipe or hose with only the setting agent stored underground. This is efficient and low in cost. COST The grout mix costs about $0.20/L ($0.75 per gal) in 1978 dollars. Filling all the voids 100 mm (4 in.) deep (25% initial porosity) would have a materials cost of about $5.40/m2 ($0.50 per sq ft). The labor cost of application is usually less than the material cost for normal tunnel jobs. A pump and proportioner cost less than $1000. Sodium silicate storage tanks and pip¬ing costs would depend on the particular site conditions. REFERENCES AND BIBLIOGRAPHY Nelson, C. Following the driving of each new section of tunnel, a prompt decision is required regarding the type and extent of primary support to control convergence and prevent ground failure. Sometime thereafter, the effectiveness of the in-place support must be evaluated over the entire length of excavation. It is therefore extremely desirable to have available a lightweight, portable, easy to install and interpret, cost effective monitoring system to assist with these ground control functions. Such a system can be assembled based on the acoustic emission (or microseismic) technique. This monitoring technique uses a piezoelectric transducer to detect subaudible noises associated with deformation of and/or crack propagation in the soil or rock being monitored. After detection, the signals are then amplified, filtered and electronically counted to provide a quantified assessment of the stability of the structure. In the simplest sense, the absence of emission, or counts, signifies no deformation and thus stability. Conversely, the occurrance of counts signifies instability to varying degrees. The higher the count rate, the greater the instability and the need for immediate or additional support. Described in this paper is an overview of the acoustic emission (microseismic) method, details of its use in a laboratory study measuring convergence and stand-up time in soil, and the behavior of rock samples under similar stress conditions. Field use of the method is recommended for ground control monitoring in tunnels, and some suggestions regarding monitoring procedure are presented.

The accuracy of vibrating wire stress meters has been questioned by various users in the mining industry. During an in situ coal pillar study, a laboratory evaluation program was developed to determine whether stress meters could produce reliable measurements in coal. More than $0 stress meters were tested for accuracy, repeatability, effects of setting pressure, and the concept of using a single curve for interpreting the stress-meter data. The testing medium was lucite, a material with a modulus of elasticity very similar to coal. The evaluation demonstrated that the stress meters did provide repeatable measurements, but that accuracy was lacking when the recommended interpretation technique was used. Therefore, a new technique was developed that required all stress meters to be calibrated in the laboratory before use in the field. This new technique reduced the average error to typically less than 10% and, in the worst case, to below 15%.

As the size of the mills get larger and the liners get heavier, abetter means had to be found to handle liner replacement. McLellan Industries is famous for their innovative ideas andwas called upon by an engineering company to develop a mill liner crane. The first crane was developed for Similkameen about 1969 to serve a 32' Ø X 14' Long SAG Mill. The next was Island Copper in Port Hardy, B.C., the same size as Similkameen in 1970. At that time, we took existing hydraulic cranes and modified them to meet the mill configuration. In 1973, we developed a completely new approach for the Southern Peru copper mine at Tacna, Peru for a Ball Mill, size 16'-6" Ø X 19' Long. Each installation required a design study to meet the change in mill size, trunnion size, elevation of floor to feed trunnion, area at the feed or discharge end of the mill. We have supplied self-propelled units as well as lift in. When there is no room at the feed end and if the mill has a trunnion overflow discharge, we have the mill supplier provide a structural frame to span the sump and move the mill liner handier into position with the use of the overhead crane or a mobile crane.

The bulk scavenger tailing from Aberfoyle's Hellyer Concentrator, which represents about one-third of the total tailing, runs about 2.5-3 g/t gold and 140-200 g/f silver. Both values are very finely disseminated, particularly the gold. Aberfoyle wished to establish whether ultra-fine grinding followed directly by cyanide leaching could be applied to the tailing for recovery of gold and silver. The work comprised the determination of gold and silver recoveries as a function of grind size and leaching time, the specific energy consumption required for continuous wet grinding of the tailing to the specified product size in a small horizontal continuous stirred mill, and an estimate of the rate of media consumption. The maximum extraction of gold, 23.3% was obtained from the finest product, with the highest cyanide concentration and longest leach time, confirming earlier work. A similar result was obtained for silver. The specific energy requirement for milling rose from 27.7 kWh/t for a P80 of 8.1 um to 219 kWh/t for a Pea of 2.3 um. The consumption of ceramic media was about 1.6 g/kg of final product. An extensive QEM'SEM Trace Mineral Search on the unground tailing failed to identify any gold-bearing particles but did identify silver-bearing particles which displayed a variety of textural associations and liberation characteristics.

Historically, introducing new technology to the mining industry has been problematic. In general, the industry is reluctant to take risks with new technology because it is already heavily tied to risk, even using existing technology. Risk in the orebody itself can be substantial. The company is dependent on drill hole patterns that are expected to define what is underground, and process test work is often based on drill cores and other samples, which occasionally produce surprises. And even well-proven processing techniques can blindside the producer, resulting in embarrassing and costly difficulties. But if the industry is to grow in knowledge and become more efficient, new ideas must be introduced. How to introduce new technology is the essence of this paper.

The City of Toronto is currently undertaking the design of the Black Creek Sanitary Trunk Sewer Relief Project. The Project involves the design and construction of approximately 20 kilometers of tunnel through shale rock of the Georgian Bay Formation and soft ground soil consisting of glacial till, glaciolacustrine and glaciofluvial sand, silt and clay deposits. The 20 kilometer alignment has been split into four sections of tunnel (1) the 12.9 km, 3.0 meter diameter Keele Trunk Relief Sewer, (2) the 2.9 km, 1.5 meter diameter Keele Trunk Relief Sewer Microtunnel, (3) the 3.9 km, 1.8 meter diameter Jane Relief Sewer, and (4) the 0.5 km,1.5 meter diameter Combined Sewer Overflow Storage Tunnel. Additionally, one 40,000 m3 wet weather flow (WWF) storage tank and numerous WWF connection shafts are to be constructed and connected to the Keele Trunk Relief Sewer to pick up WWF from existing outfalls currently discharging to Black Creek. The anticipated cost of the project is approximately $600 million with construction of the Project’s Phase One Works, the Keele Trunk Relief Sewer and Jane Relief Sewer, scheduled to commence in 2025. This paper provides an overview of the project in terms of the anticipated geotechnical conditions, the scheme developed for design and construction of the tunnel system and the associated schedule and procurement strategy. The consideration for planning of the tunnel system, the risk-based analysis and decision-making process are presented and form the basis for selection of a precast tunnel lining support method in the rock and soft ground.

The geological and geostatistical modeling of mineral deposits requires densely sampled drillholes that provide accurate and reliable hard data. Furthermore, quantifying orebody uncertainty through geostatistical simulation can allow mining engineers to assess long-term risk in mine planning. Nevertheless, ore deposits can sometimes lack dense drillhole information, reliable hard data with proper quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), or sometimes both. This study is based on a coal mine located in the Republic of Kazakhstan, where an iron dataset is based on data from three newly drilled drillholes, and geological information comes from a massive collection of legacy drillhole data with no evidence of proper QA/QC. For this reason, a workflow was introduced to construct a representative training image from legacy data and stochastically model geological domains within these three drillholes using a multiple-point geostatistics technique. Once the geological model was obtained, a two-point geostatistics algorithm was applied to model the iron inside each geological domain. The direct sampling algorithm was chosen for modeling geological domains, and sequential Gaussian simulation for iron grade calculation. Both methods were extensively evaluated using different statistical tools and analyses.

Each year, US coal cleaning plants landfill or impound millions of tons of high-quality, fine-sized coal. This coal is not only difficult and expensive to capture during cleaning, but, if captured, can pose serious materials handling problems. The GranuFlow. Technology was developed and patented by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to address these problems. GranuFlow involves the addition of a coal binding agent such as an asphalt or heavy oil emulsion to coal to reduce moisture, dusting, and freezing and to improve the flow properties of the coal in bins and chutes (1, 2, and 3). When the emulsion is added before mechanical dewatering, the binding agent causes the formation of fine-sized coal agglomerates that dewater better than untreated coal. In addition, the binding agent increases the capture of ultra-fine coal in screen-bowl centrifuges. Previous work by DOE has also demonstrated that such treatment results in a significant reduction in dustiness and a reduced potential to freeze. To address concerns about the handling and combustion characteristics of GranuFlow treated coal, DOE performed a pilot-scale pulverization and combustion test (4). No problems were encountered during pulverization or combustion, and use of this fuel in a p.c. boiler was found to be feasible from a technical perspective. CQ Inc. has an exclusive license from DOE to market this technology and is currently performing a series of commercial demonstrations to determine if GranuFlow is both technically and economically viable.

Recent work to upgrade the ventilation system for the el Mochito lead/zinc mine in central Honduras is discussed. Network modeling and underground measurements were used to evaluate cost-effective alternatives for achieving satisfactory ventilation in a complex and expanding underground operation. Both interim and long-term solutions were implemented to make mining possible under difficult conditions. INTRODUCTION Mining operations at the el Mochito Mine, located in the central highlands of Honduras, Central America, have been virtually continuous since the opening of the mine in 1948. Initially a high-grade silver mine, the mine has expanded along a westward trend of pipe-like orebodies to a distance of roughly one mile from two centrally located shafts. Production of the relatively large San Juan orebody at the western most extension of the mine (Paddock, 1981) led to the introduction of diesel-powered equipment; however, the ventilation infrastructure was insufficient to meet the needs of mechanized mining. A succession of owners/operators in the 1980s allowed the existing ventilation infrastructure to decay to the point that ventilation in the production areas of the mine was very poor. Environmental conditions in some working areas were not conducive to efficient ore extraction because of high dry bulb temperature, high humidity, and diesel emissions. Upon acquiring the mine in 1990, Breakwater Resources of Tucson, Arizona began an aggressive program to refurbish the mine infrastructure to complete extraction of the San Juan orebody and to allow the extension of the mine another 2500 ft to the west for extraction of the Nacional orebody. The program included increasing the capacity of the main ventilation system. This article presents a case history of the process of upgrading the ventilation system in a mine where extensive old workings cause large air leakage. This process has been one of selecting solutions to difficult technical problems that are compatible with the existing mine infrastructure and economic constraints. The initial ventilation system is described in the background section, along with ventilation projections for the mine expansion. Field characterization of the ventilation system for design verification and fan specification is then discussed. The paper describes a series of interim changes to the system to improve ventilation pending completion of new ventilation boreholes. In addition, the temperature/ heat problems in the mine are described. BACKGROUND Initial Condition of Ventilation System The ventilation system is illustrated in Figure 1, which shows the extent of mining with the main ventilation paths superimposed. Early mining around the two shafts opened up vertical connections (stopes and raises) over the entire 2420 ft (737.6 m) of vertical extent, and mining progressed to the west primarily using compressed air and electric-powered equipment. Since ventilation was not a complex problem in the original mining system, the stopes and interconnecting raises were not sealed. The San Juan orebody was much larger than the silver ore zones mined previously, being primarily zinc and other base metals. Its geometry, size, and grade allowed the use of vertical crater retreat (VCR) stoping with diesel mucking and haulage equipment. Its depth, along with the existence of warm groundwater, resulted in a mine climate problem on the lower levels. To establish a complete ventilation circuit, two vertical boreholes (Bonanza Nos. 1 and 2) had been drilled by previous owners from the surface in the vicinity of the San Juan orebody. The system design called for air to be drawn down the intake shafts, across the lower mine levels to the San Juan workings, then up through the San Juan ramps and ore passes to these two exhaust boreholes (see Figure 1). In practice, however, only the Bonanza No. 1 borehole was drawing air through the desired path. Leakage across the old upper levels from the intake shafts, the Caliche tunnel, and from intervening abandoned stopes and raises supplied most of the air flowing to the base of the Bonanza No. 2 borehole. In effect, there were two ventilation circuits in semi-parallel through the mine, of which only one was delivering appreciable air to the San Juan workings.

The values of saturated water vapor pressure from steam tables have been found to be inaccurate for mine ventilation usage because the effect of air on the saturated water vapor was disregarded. Presented here are the newest and most accurate currently available tables from the National Bureau of Standards (NBS). Also included are: (1) a formula for correcting the saturated water vapor pressure for temperature and altitude. (2) a formula for computing unsaturated water vapor pressure, and (3) a formula for air density. Because Systeme International (SI) units are used in the formulas, conversions are given from U. S. conventional units to SI units. The intent of this paper is to show by means of six steps the accurate calculation of mine air density for use on modern computers.

Heterogeneity and discontinuity significantly affect rockmass strength. Past studies have largely used arbitrary scaling approaches to produce rockmass strength from laboratory rock tests. This paper proposes a stochastic approach to produce rockmass strength from laboratory rock tests. Based on the laboratory data, MATLAB with an extreme value stochastic model generated a database for each physico-mechanical property of the rock. Then finite-difference software FLAC2D simulated laboratory-sized rock specimens. Random material properties in MATLAB were generated using the grids developed in the numerical model. The random properties were then applied to the final FLAC2D model. Model runs simulated the approach performed in the laboratory. The results from the model indicate that a stochastic approach produced compressive strengths that were lower than those from the deterministic approach. Failure modes for each specimen were different from those observed in the laboratory. In addition, random density also influenced the failure mode, highlighting the importance of stochastic analysis in rocks.

The most important safety aspect associated with great mining height in steeply dipping coal seam mining is the stability and control of the roof. When soft coal and hard gangue make up the immediate roof of a working face, the soft-coal interlayer plays a significant role in gangue damage and can cause problems such as roof collapse in front of the support, collapse of partial area supports and other problems that can affect the stability of the supports and the surrounding rock system. This study found that the first weighting step of a multigangue roof is larger than that of a nongangue roof, but periodic weighting steps are similar. The overburden collapse height is lower in a multigangue roof than in a nongangue roof due to the buffering and supporting function of the collapsed gangue. Failure of the coal interlayer is the key factor in the collapse of multilayer gangue. The limited load of the interlayer and maximum resistance of the support is concluded by the hard gangue and soft coal interlayer mechanical model. The maximum resistance of the support increased with the dip angle of the seam and burial depth. Certain measures are proposed to control the stability of the gangue roof, including zoning control of the mining height and resistance and advancing the support while maintaining roof contact, thus ensuring the integrity of the support and surrounding rock system.

The 1980 Mine Dewatering Act was enacted to protect water rights and to allow mine dewatering to proceed where impairment of a water right might have otherwise created a bar to mine development. In New Mexico, new appropriations for beneficial use are subject to the State Engineer's jurisdiction and are granted only upon a showing of non-impairment. Before 1980, mine dewatering was not considered a beneficial use, nor was it considered waste. The Act brings mine dewatering under the jurisdiction of the State Engineer, makes it subject to the same requirements as an application for appropriation for beneficial use, grants the right to replace the water of users whose rights would be impaired by mine dewatering without a plan of replacement, and extends the right of replacement to non-mining appropriations of water for beneficial use, Application of the Act requires determination of the definition of impairment (the threshold of significant impact on existing water rights), hydrologic evaluations to determine the impact of the proposed dewatering, and preparation and execution of a plan of replacement to avoid impairment of existing rights.

Roadheaders, also called Boom Miners or Boom-type Tunneling Machines have been in North America since 1968, when first introduced by Willy Kogelmann, the founder of Alpine Equipment Corp. (?Alpine?). Roadheaders were invented in Europe in the late 1940s. Machines with in-line, axial cutter heads were developed in the former Soviet Union. The British Dosco DRCL is based on the Russian PK-3 roadheader. Roadheaders with transverse ?ripper? cutter heads were invented in Hungary (1). The Austrian-made Alpine Miners of VOEST-Alpine, purchased by Sandvik AB, are based on a 1965 Hungarian license. Roadheaders are widely used in the mining and tunneling industries because they can excavate drifts, entries and tunnels with cross sections of any shape and size, can handle mixed faces, work on steep grades, and negotiate tight curves and cross-cuts. A roadheader?s only major limitation is the strength and abrasiveness of rock and minerals to be excavated. This paper covers roadheader selection criteria, improvements in reliability, attachments for flexibility (Multi-Tool Miner), and automated support systems for increased cutting time for increased shift production.
