The large massive sulphide deposits present a formidable challenge to the economic geologist. They represent such huge concentrations of iron, sulphur, base metals and precious metals that it is difficult to conceive how they were derived from the crust or mantle of the Earth. The problem of the origin of massive sulphide deposits has generated a geological controversy which has lasted two hundred years and shows no sign of abating. The economic incentive to solve this problem is great, as the massive sulphide bodies are the moat important source of the world's zinc, lead, and silver, as well as yielding large amounts of copper and gold. Using the criteria of abundance, size, age distribution and gross value of contained metals, the predominant sub-group of the massive sulphide deposits is that which comprises the crudely conformable pyritic (or pyrrhotitic) deposits which occur in stratified volcanic and sedimentary rocks or their metamorphosed equivalents. Examples of this sub-group are: the Buchans, Bathurst, Noranda, Kidd Creek, Flin Plon and Sullivan deposits of Canada; the Mt. Isa and Broken Hill orebodies of Australia; the Cyprus, Rio Tinto, Meggen and Rammelsberg deposits of Europe; Ducktown and the United Verde in United States; and the Kuroko deposits of Japan.

The procedure to arrive at an energy efficient autogenous grinding plant is carried out in the following steps: First Step - Determine power requirements to grind a particular ore. This work carried out on small samples ground in a 450 mm diameter Aerofall Hill and the results are checked against a standard Bond Index test. Second Step - A bulk sample from the ore zone is ground in a 1.8 m diameter pilot mill. This work is carried on until the power objectives as indicated from the first step have been realized. Third Step - Correlate the pilot mill data, with the data from the numerous samples ground in the small 450 mm mill and arrive at design criteria for the commercial plant. Ensure commercial mill design will be suitable to obtain similar results as those obtained in the pilot mill.

The slag measurement systems in the cast house are very important. In the conventional method, the slag is granulated in a slag granulation system, and the slag flow rate is measured by the associated belt scale. However, in places where a slag granulation system is not available, the alternate approach is to deduce a theoretical calculation and develop the measurement because the commissioning of such slag granulation requires huge capital and has inherent geographical limitation. However, the theoretical approach suffers from several drifts and is far from the reality. In the present paper, we have innovatively engineered a sensor by designing the stellite-coated thermocouple that can measure the temperature of the slurry and placed it in such a way that the abrasive slag granules do not obstruct it, but we could measure the temperature of hot water, and further based on the thermodynamic approach, the slag flow rate is determined that can be compared with the theoretical approach. This approach of slag rate measurement is cost-effective and long-lasting.

The thermal conductivity of rock surrounding the airway is one of the most important thermal properties for estimating strata heat transfer into the mine air and for designing the air-cooling strategies. Several laboratory methods are available for the determination of thermal conductivity; however, most of them are complex and cumbersome. The present study explains the working principle of Lee’s apparatus which is relatively simple, easy to fabricate and use, and provides consistent results. In the present study, thermal conductivities of sandstone cores obtained from an Indian coal mine are determined using Lee’s apparatus. An approach is discussed for determining the temperature gradient of sandstone specimens while cooling and used for calculating thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of different sandstone specimens attains values between 2.37 and 2.59 W m− 1 °C−1. For different sandstone cores obtained from the field, properties including specific gravity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and porosity, along with thermal conductivity, are determined and highlighted in this study.

Newmont?s Twin Creeks Mine, located in northern Nevada, is producing gold ore from surface mining operations. The ore is currently processed at three different on-site facilities depending on ore type and grade. Processing facilities operate under stringent geochemical blending constraints that must be met from mine ore deliveries and off-site sourced ore. To analyze various strategic options, the technical team utilizes the mathematical optimization approach. However, due to the size and complexity of the operation, there are unique challenges in optimizing life-of-mine production scheduling. This paper describes those challenges and methods developed to take advantage of different scheduling software to effectively compensate each other and result in reasonable guidance. This paper also describes how those scheduling results are reflected in detailed mine plan and cost estimate work.

According to the "Survey of Energy Resources 1980" (1)*, which was prepared by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Raw Materials in Hannover (FRG)for the World Energy Conference 1980 in Munich, the world coal deposits are assessed at 775 billion tce proven reserves 448 billion tce of them recoverable and 6 161 billion tce additional resources. If one ignores growth rates, the current world coal output of 2,8 billion tpy gives our recoverable reserves a static life expectancy of 175 years. With an average increase in world output of 3,2 % like between 1973 and 1980 this range would be further shortened to an alarming degree. Furthermore, the criteria used to distinguish between workable and unworkable resources give rise to the suspicion that deposit characteristics are not always taken into account to a sufficient degree. For example, little attention is paid to major ?Bonitaet" - factors such as dip and seam thickness. There have been wide-ranging scientific discussions on the lower limit for workable coal resources, but no such limits have been set at the other end of the scale. Otherwise it is well known that performance and costs are badly affected den in level and moderately inclined seams the seam thickness is more than 4 to 5 m, because special mining methods have to be used beyond this limit. These are associated with significantly higher costs than with the winning of seams of ?normal? thickness.

Deep well disposal of selected industrial wastes has been proved feasible and acceptable in the New Orleans area by several industries including Shell Oil Company's Norco Refinery and Chemical Plant where three of the six successful disposal wells in this area are operating. Well design and procedures for restoration of capacity are based, in most cases, on the principles of brine injection developed by oil producers in South Louisiana. Geological formations in the Gulf Coast area are suited to this type of injection because receiving strata are porous, isolated from sources of potable water and their water is compatible with the liquid wastes to be injected. This method of disposal is a simple, complete and economical solution to the problems presented by certain hard to treat wastes.

In subterranean mining operations, access to communication networks deep underground is critical for transporting data, voice and video, and other supporting applications that are essential for efficient and safe operations. Whether accessing sophisticated ERP or maintenance management systems, engaging in fleet management, video surveillance, or access control, or protecting miners with wireless locator systems, these networks serve as a literal lifeline between workers deep within mines and surface operations. For this, mining networks require more than permanently installed network cabling, it also requires unique deployable systems designed for quick installation, extension and even relocation as the active mine site area moves, or equipment is moved in and out.

"The mining industry is a tough business. The obstacles faced in attempting to run a mine - much less build a new one - go beyond an orebody’s geology. There was a time when commodity prices dictated whether or not to build or expand a mine. Today, though, the challenges faced by miners include social responsibility, environmental regulations and a myriad of needed permits on several governmental levels that every miner knows will be challenged by opponents every step of the way. With all of those challenges, and others not mentioned here, it’s a wonder anyone would stay in the industry. But they do. In fact, more than 2,100 mining professionals from around the world gathered in Reno, NV last December for the American Exploration and Mining Association’s (AEMA) annual conference. That is an impressive number, considering that commodity prices remain in the doldrums, preventing companies from building many new mines and limiting expansions at existing ones. Even so, attending such a conference allows these mining industry pros to learn new and more efficient ways to operate their mines and plants through the dozens of technical presentations the conference offered. And mingling with their peers provided another avenue for learning. The AEMA conference also attracted many of the industry’s leading equipment and service providers (228 exhibitors in 246 booths). Technical presentationsThe AMEA meeting is known for its variety of high quality technical presentations and the 2014 conference was no exception. Some of the topics include new technologies in surface and underground mining, explorers and emerging producers, mine closure and remediation, regulations and reserves reporting, hydrology and new innovations in mining. "R.E. Janes Gravel Co. is an aggregates producer is located along a paleo-channel of the Ogallala formation (locally known as the Slaton Channel) approximately 48.3 km (30 miles) southeast of Lubbock, TX. In an attempt to beneficiate the 25.4-mm (1-in.) concrete aggregate product, a log washer was installed in the processing line to liberate and remove fines (clay) from the finished product. The introduction of this extra cleaning step increased fines in the finished product, exacerbating the original problem. Several other processing options were investigated before a geological analysis was undertaken to try and define the lithology of the formation and formation characteristics in an attempt to alleviate this problem.Initial assessmentsThe mined resources are mid-Miocene to early Pliocene (16-4 mya) in age and is the eastern exposure of the Ogallala formation of the Southern High Plains escarpment. The Ogallala formation consists of coarse-grained alluvial sediments in paleovalley channel ways from the Rocky Mountains with fine Aeolian and paleosol deposition on the uplands across the High Plains region of the United States. Locally, these Rocky Mountain sediments from New Mexico were transported and deposited in a paleochannel that is approximately 0.805 km (0.5 miles) wide and 15.25 to 18.3 m (50 to 60 ft) in depth. As this channel cut across the Southern High Plains it eroded local rock sources of Late Cretaceous limestones and Triassic sandstones and mudstones incorporating them into the younger Ogallala depositional sequence.Depositional historyThe channel currently being mined is a nontypical Ogallala deposit. The Ogallala in the panhandle of Texas is divided into two units, the Couch and the Bridwell. The Couch is the older of the two and exhibits alluvial sedimentation of thicker and larger gravel (up to 76.2 mm or 3 in.) deposits fining upward to Aeolian sedimentation and thick friable caliche deposits. The Bridwell overlies the Couch and is characterized by alluvial sedimentation, a distinctive red tint and smaller gravel components (typically no larger than 25.4 mm or 1 in.) fining upward to Aeolian sedimentation and thick, well-indurated caliche cap. The Slaton Channel divides these two units and shares lithologic components of both, yet is lithologically distinct due to its Cretaceous Age limestone gravels that can be < 3.66 m (12 ft) in size. Caliche/calcrete is a calcareous (CaCO3) deposit that forms in the B horizon of soils as a rain water leachate of CaCO3 from the upper A horizon."

With the world’s ever-expanding push to expand technological capabilities, the need for specialized materials including rare earth elements has exploded. One source found in the USA is bastnaesite, a rare earth bearing fluorocarbonate mineral, currently mined at the Mountain Pass Mine in California. To increase production, it is essential to optimize existing processes and create new ones to better utilize current resources. Therefore, a US Department of Energy Critical Materials Institute sponsored research program was carried out at the Kroll Institute for Extractive Metallurgy to expand the fundamental understanding of the industrial bastnaesite concentrate leaching system. With the help of prior knowledge, thermodynamic calculations and design of experimentation based lab testing, a novel single-stage hydrochloric leach system was created to optimize the rare earth extraction from bastnaesite. Historically, the existing industrial process has utilized a two-stage leach system involving a high-temperature hydrochloric acid leach with liquid solid separations followed by a caustic crack stage of the leach residues. A series of single-stage leach experiments were run by reacting locked cycle flotation concentrates with hydrochloric acid to test common leaching parameters. The results of these patent pending single-stage tests have shown rare earth recoveries significantly higher than reported recoveries of historic two-stage caustic crack processes, all while decreasing the equipment required and the type and amount of reagents needed.

There is a natural resistance to change in any form. When it comes to implementing a game-changing technology like autonomous haulage on an operating mine site, the resistance can at times appear insurmountable. Whether based on real information or misguided preconceptions, it?s essential that we don?t underestimate the effort it will take to overcome this resistance, while clearly recognizing when it?s worth the effort. These realizations did not happen overnight for sites where autonomous haulage has been implemented. Nor did they happen overnight for manufacturers of autonomous mining equipment. Caterpillar, for example, began building toward autonomy more than 30 years ago and had a truck operating in the mid-1990s. Lessons learned during those early years led to the realization that there was much more to be learned ? not just about the machines themselves, but about the systems and knowledge that must be in place for a successful implementation. Working closely with customers, initiating real-life demonstrations on mine sites, having discussions with regulatory agencies and other stakeholders ? these and many other activities were necessary before autonomy could be fully and successfully launched. After decades of effort, Caterpillar?s first official commercial autonomous mine site went to work in 2011 in Farmington, NM.

"Fatigue presents several challenges for the mining industry. Depending on the specific occupation, daily work or operational setup on any given mine site, mining jobs can have a fair amount of labor-intensive tasks mixed with monotonous and repetitive duties. Combined with the long working hours and shift-work schedules of mining work, the prevalence of fatigue in mine workers may seem rather unsurprising.Mining is certainly not alone in facing the challenge of addressing worker fatigue. Indeed, many of the characteristics above mirror the similarities of fatigue in other industries, such as health care, aviation and security. To the extent that fatigue in mining acts like fatigue in any other industry, then any fatigue management applications, trainings, or interventions in existence can be borrowed from other industries and applied to mining in a cookie-cutter approach. However, some have argued that mining in particular is especially susceptible to increases in the prevalence of fatigue beyond the characteristics listed above due to the multifaceted combination of factors in mining environments associated with fatigue: dim lighting; limited visual acuity; hot temperatures; loud noise; highly repetitive, sustained, and monotonous tasks; shiftwork; long work hours; long commute times due to mine site remoteness; early morning awakenings; and generally poor sleep habits (Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, 2012; Legault, 2011). Legault (2011) in particular argues that it is the combination of these factors simultaneously that can make mineworkers particularly susceptible to sleep deprivation and fatigue in comparison to other industries where these factors are often not present all together. If fatigue looks and acts different in mining, as others have argued, more research is needed to determine if, how, and why worker fatigue might need to be managed differently in mining.While the burden of fatigue on the mining population has not yet been evaluated thoroughly, methods and measures of fatigue management remain a popular point of discussion. Many commercial suppliers and consultancy groups have begun to develop technologically based fatigue monitoring systems (McMillian, 2013). Some technologies can monitor vehicle operators for indicators of wakefulness, such as percent eyelid"

Over the years, electric utilities have been faced with declining steam-coal quality, rising coal prices, and increasingly rigid and costly environmental standards. As a result, many utilities are beginning to show an interest in coal cleaning to upgrade coal by improving its heating value and reducing its sulfur content. Among the primary questions that must be answered for these electric utilities is whether the cost of coal cleaning can be offset by the potential cost savings in coal transportation and utilization in power generation. In search of at least a preliminary answer to this question, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) engaged Bechtel to perform a case-by-case economic study to examine the cost effects of using cleaned versus raw coal to fuel new electric power plants. The results of two of the seven cases studied which involved western coals - one from Montana and another from Utah - are reported in this paper. Coal cleaning appeared to be a cost effective option for the Utah coal, but only marginally economical for the Montana coal. These cost results are expected to change to favor coal cleaning to a greater extent with the application of the final revised New Source Performance Standards regulating SO2 emissions just issued by the EPA. The study was based on the regulation originally proposed by the EPA under the 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments.

To operate the Morris Fork Preparation Plant with a closed water circuit has been an elusive goal for Union Carbide. The benefits of a closed circuit have never been questioned. The removal of fine solids from washery water makes possible the recirculation and reuse of the water. Heavy media drag tanks and other separating machines perform better and more consistently with washery essentially free of fine solids. Finally, the production of a clarified effluent makes unnecessary the sludge ponds usually associated with a coal preparation plant. Why then do I say elusive? Because, since plant design was completed in 1970 we have been in hot pursuit of an ever-growing fine solids problem. In four years the minus 28 mesh material in the plant feed has nearly doubled. The replacement of conventional sections with continuous mining machines has led to a lowering in size and quality of product from the mine. In addition, increasing emphasis underground on roadway clean-up has contributed to the fines problem.

Paraphrasing the poetic repetition of Gertrude Stein - "Research is research, is research, is research --- ad infinitum." But research takes many forms and involves many facets. Perhaps the most simple of definitions is that attributed to the late "Boss" Kettering of General Motors who in advising a young trainee said, "Research is an intelligent effort to satisfy the curiosity of the human mind." Reclamation research is complex and requires a diversity of scientific knowledge. The overall aim of land reclamation research is directed to finding practical ways to develop efficient methods to restore mined lands to productive use, compatible with use of adjacent lands, as soon after mining as possible; and, finding practical ways to reduce or prevent damage to surrounding resource areas, which may be affected by the mining process. Research in the field of mined land reclamation is not entirely new, although in some respects we are exploring new areas each day.

INTRODUCTION The role of comminution and related unit operations in mineral processing applications is of major importance. This is especially true in terms of operating costs, since these unit operations represent the major fraction of the overall processing costs. Due to the broad scope and the large number of unit processes and machines involved, Section 3 is divided into five subsections. In Section 3A, General Aspects of Comminution, topics covered include history, terminology, particle¬size distributions, classes of comminution machines, testing and calcu¬lation procedures, and simulation and modeling. In Section 3B, Crush¬ing. the subjects include jaw crushers, gyratory crushers, cone crushers, hammermills, and impactors. The chapters of Section 3C, Grinding, cover aspects common to tumbling mills, ball mills, rod mills, autogenous mills, pebble mills, roller mills, fluid energy mills, other types of grinding machines, and grinding costs. Section 3D, Classification, coverage includes classification theory, hydrocyclones, and mechanical classifiers, and in Section 3E, Screening, the topics presented are classes of screens, selection of vibrating screens, sieve bend screens, and screening media. About five years after the Handbook was begun, Section 3 was unfortunately without an editor or contributors for over half of the chapters. A committee was then organized to expedite completion of the section. When this committee contacted the persons who had agreed to contribute to the section, it was found that many of them wished to resign from their earlier voluntary obligation to AIME. Therefore the committee had to find new contributors for these chap¬ters in addition to other chapters in Section 3. Since there had been no previous effort to locate contributors for Air Classification, Dust Collection, and Washing and Scrubbing, it was agreed to delete these subsections. In Section 3, equipment availability, capacity, and performance data from various manufacturers and users are provided for engineer¬ing use. Selected data from existing installations are also included. The machines that are being used in comminution, classification, and screening are described in detail, and drawings, photographs, and diagrams are presented to supplement the descriptive material. The editors thank and acknowledge the generous effort of the many contributors, some of whom were called upon five or more years after the Handbook was started. It is regretted that Fred C. Bond, who was a member of the committee formed to complete this section, was deceased before the section was finished. During the time that he worked with the committee, he contributed a great deal as an author and councilor.

A couple of miles southwest of the town of Saltville in the western tip of Virginia is a little village called Plasterco. Gypsum has been produced in this area since about the year 1815, being originally found as small outcrops at the surface. Production in the early days was very small, and the use of the mineral was limited to that of "land plaster" or ground gypsum which was spread on the land to sweeten the soil. In the late 1800&apos;s, a small calcining plant was constructed and the production of gypsum plaster began. About this same time, the surface rock was depleted and it became necessary to begin underground mining operations in order to maintain a continuous supply of raw material. The United States Gypsum Company became interested in this property in 1909, and has operated there ever since, having enlarged the calcining mill and built a plant for the manufacture of gypsum wall-board in the middle 1920&apos;s. Production of gypsum continues from underground&apos; mining operations, and the present mine at Plasterco is now about 1,000 feet below the surface, making it the deepest gypsum mine&apos; in the world.

Five-element style deposits are unusual hydrothermal systems that are typically characterized by a nickel-cobalt-arsenic- silver-bismuth metal assemblage. This mineralization is often represented by abundant native silver, arsenic, or bismuth, and followed by nickel, cobalt, and iron arsenides (skutterudite, safflorite, nickeline, rammelsbergite, and lollingite). The Black Hawk district in Grant County, New Mexico is one of the few examples of this mineralization style in the United States. Despite the differences in formation temperature, depth of emplacement, and host rocks between five-element style deposits worldwide, there are commonalities in mineralogy, ore texture, and composition. A detailed exploration of the native metal and arsenide phases will be performed to compare ore forming fluids between systems and the effects on styles of mineralization and paragenesis, as well as to aid in broader classification of the deposit style. Mineralogy and mineral relationships of the Black Hawk District and other five-element deposits worldwide will be characterized by reflected light petrography, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electron microprobe analysis. Mineralogical phase diagrams will be generated to better understand the driving processes and evolution of the systems through native metal and arsenide precipitation.

Climate change is the central challenge facing the mining industry, wherein producers must simultaneously ramp up production to provide the raw materials for clean technologies while transitioning to carbon neutrality. While transitioning to renewables will take time, mines can start improving energy efficiency while improving productivity today. This paper proposes a novel technology ecosystem that can help. By monitoring mine shovels, loaders, haul truck paths, and conveyor belts, the proposed technology enables particle size measurements throughout the operation, truck and belt volume monitoring, ground engaging tools monitoring, and boulder detection.
