This paper will present an overview of conveyor haulage systems. Technical and economic feasibility will be examined as conveyor haulage is applied to large western surface coal mines. Theoretical analysis and actual cases will be presented from NERCO Coal Corp. experiences in bringing this application to their Western mines.

The Spar Lake deposit is located in northwestern Montana, approximately 27 km (17 miles) south of Troy, MT, under Mt. Vernon. The deposit is a stratiform, stratabound copper-silver deposit occurring in the Revett Formation of the Proterozoic Belt Supergroup. Distribution of known sandstone-type deposits in the Revett Formation is shown in Fig. 1.

This paper studied the flotation separation of feldspar, zircon and kyanite from quartz with a mixture of cationic and anionic collectors. Tests show that collector mixture has specially good effect, using it, the separation of these three silicate minerals from quartz can be successfully achieved at the natural pH value of tap water in the absence of any acid, fluoride and other inorganic reagents. The properties and characteristics of collector mixture were analysed. By means of IR-spectra, ESCA and AES, the action mechanism between collector mixture and minerals was throughoutly studied.

An advanced numerical model based upon the Discrete Element Method (DEM) has been developed to provide the engineer with unique detailed information to assist in the design of transfer points in large industrial conveyor systems in mining operations. This modeling technique provides a quantitative description of the bulk solids movement through the transfer point. This information consists of the velocity distribution of the bulk solids and the stresses within the bulk solids. The DEM model also gives detailed information concerning the impact forces acting on the transfer structure and the conveyor belts from the bulk solids flow.

The problem of how to handle heterogeneous populations in an ore reserve global estimation arises in many geostatistical studies. In some cases it is possible to split data into different significant types of ore in such way that non-overlapping subpopulations are obtained, and a separate study is possible. In other cases the subpopulations are intermingled and a set of nested structures may model the spatial variability of the ore. Finally, one of the populations, consisting of a small proportion of high grade values of economical meaning, may disturb the structural analysis. In this paper, some methods are proposed to cope with these kind of problems and typical case studies are presented.

Bacís mining is a young enterprise in Mexico that produces a pyrite concentrate rich in gold and silver. When gold and silver are associated to sulfide minerals, pre-treament such as: roasting, pressure oxidation and bioleching, is required to decompose the sulphides and thereby expose the gold and silver particles to the cyanide solution. A novel method demonstrates that the oxidation and dissolution of gold and silver in alka-line cyanide solution can be conducted simultaneously in the same autoclave in less than 90 minutes with a recovery that exceeds 96%. Factors affecting recovery efficiency such as pH, leaching time in the reactor, temperature, particle diameter, pressure, % of NaCN and pulp density were investigated.

To meet federal air pollution guidelines, it is necessary to remove a considerable quantity of sulfur from many North American coals. This may be accomplished by oxidizing the sulfur to water soluble forms, followed by washing the coal. Selective oxidation of the various sulfur forms can be accomplished through the use of a variety of types of bacteria. In this paper, the various bacteria and their requirements are described, and processes using bacteria to remove coal sulfur are discussed.

Quick, inexpensive and accurate mineral-phase identification is of utmost importance to applied mineralogists. The precise relationship between the intensity of measured backscattered electrons in a scanning electron microscope and the average atomic number of the specimen is still argued. Nevertheless, much can be gained by using backscattered electron images to identify mineral phases in a specimen. An application was developed to facilitate this method and makes it a practical, inexpensive and valuable option in many mineralogical investigations. The Velvet uranium mine is located in the Big Indian district of the Colorado Plateau. The uranium ore body lies within the lower Triassic Chinle Formation, and the ore is associated with west-south-westerly trending fluvial sand systems. Exploration and mining are directed by longhole drilling and radiometric sampling. Results of the gamma probing, face scanning, and geologic mapping guide mining decisions and planning. Three people are directly involved with the geologic procedures: two geologists and a mine supervisor. The two geologists map, do rib scans, and direct longhole drilling. The third man involved, the mine supervisor, has last minute directive action based on shot hole probe data.

It quantifies the solubilities of the impurities, complex formation, and kinetic effects. An application of geostatistics to financial decision analysis is the linking of reserve parameters estimation precisions to a mine economics computer program calculating profitability. The estimates of economic reserve parameters are obtained by the kriging method, while precision are calculated by a technique more akin to the polygon method. To indicate the effect of the variables probability distribution on a distribution of profitability, their values are sampled by a Monte Carlo technique and entered into a mine economics modelling program developed by T. R. Ellis. The distribution of profitability calculations are in essence, a superior method of sensitivity analysis. The method is applied to a roll-front uranium deposit in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming.

The paper contains knowledge that have been achieved when the problem of airflow temperature and humidity changes prediction in mine airways was investigated. The substance of physical processes has been consistently applied. The methods of dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures calculations can be applied in any type of mine airway. The exceptionality of auxiliary ventilated airways is in the original solution of so called losing air flowing when a ventilation pipe is leaky. The combination of aerodynamics and thermodynamics solutions enable to determine climatic conditions on projected workplaces with a sufficient accuracy.

Introduction Located in Russia’s Chukotka Autonomous Region near the Arctic circle and 425km from the seasonal port of Pevek (population approximately 4600), Peschanka (or ‘Anyui’) is perhaps the world’s most isolated CuMoAu porphyry deposit of significant grade and tonnage. In addition to its extreme remoteness (66°36'N/164°30'E) and lack of developed infrastructure, Peschanka is located in one of the world’s coldest regions, with annual average temperatures well below freezing. Soviet exploration up to 1985 defined four zones with inferred resources of roughly 940Mt @ 0.51% Cu, 0.42 g/t Au, 1.4 g/t Ag and 0.019% Mo (1).

During calcination of diatomaceous earth, cristobalite is formed in varying percentages. Also, during efforts to recycle products containing natural diatomaceous earth, various heat treatments are used which may or may not result in the formation of cristobalite. The ILO (International Labor Organization) Encyclopaedia of Occupational Health and Safety states that conversion begins at 450'C and in the presence of a flux, is complete at 800'C. Due to the potential adverse health effects associated with crystalline silica, a more thorough understanding of the time/ temperature relationship is needed. Tests performed under controlled conditions do not substantiate the claims made in the ILO Encyclopaedia.

The liquid-phase mixing within CANMET's Western Research Centre's (WRC) 0.76-m-diem pilot-plant flotation column was characterized using a salt tracer. The process variables studied were frother addition and, gas and liquid flow rates. The response of the column to a tracer pulse was monitored at three axial and two radial locations. The results showed that the 2-tph flotation column was well mixed. Discussed are the implications of this observation to column design and scale-up.

This article introduces mine planning as a complex process based on the quantitative and qualitative assessment of a myriad of independent and inter-or co- dependent variables. The interdependent variables of particular interest in this paper are those associated with mine planning activities that impact metallurgical processing plant performance and costs. These variables are identified and examples are provided to substantiate the argument that the magnitude and sensitivity of these variables must be formally assessed and analyzed to determine their potential impact on overall economics.

Organic contaminants can be removed from river sediment using conventional flotation methods. Organic contamination in sediments is one of the most significant pollution problems facing the Great Lakes region. Using conventional flotation, the majority of the organic contamination can be collected in a concentrate, leaving a "clean" tailings. This provides a cost savings by reducing the amount of material requiring further treatment. The concentrate can then undergo additional flotation stages, or other contamination removal procedures, to further remove the organic contaminants.
