The handling of fine coal is an important issue for both the coal and utility industries. Reconstitution of fine coal in the form of pellets or briquettes would be desirable if it could be done economically. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of three binders, asphalt-emulsion, corn starch and Brewex, informing pellets of ultrafine clean coal. It was found that asphalt-emulsion and corn starch were not effective binders. However, the use of Brewex resulted in pellets that exceeded all of the minimum quality requirements for coal pellets.

There is a broad range of chemical reagents of potential use to the coal preparation industry: flotation frothers, flotation collectors (for coal, ash minerals or pyrite) and collector-assisting (conditioning) agents, flotation depressants (for coal, ash minerals or pyrite), pH regulating agents, acid mine drainage treatment chemicals, flocculants, filtration aids, dispersants, dust suppressants (wetting agents and car-top or pile binders), freeze conditioning agents, water treatment chemicals (corrosion and scale inhibitors) and suspension stabilizing reagents (dispersants, stabilizers, biocides). The application of each of these types is discussed with particular attention paid to those of greatest importance: flotation frothers and collectors, pH regulators and acid mine drainage treatment chemicals, flocculants and freeze conditioning agents.

Leaching studies of low-grade manganese ore containing 31.77% Mn and 23.71 % Fe from Nishikhal, India, were carried out using pyritiferous lignite as a reductant in sulfuric acid medium. The variables studied were quantity of lignite, sulfuric acid concentration and temperature. Regression equations for the extraction of manganese and potassium were determined from 23 full factorial design data. The experimental conditions for the extraction of manganese were optimized using the steepest-ascent method. It was found that 99.03% of the manganese could be extracted in three hours with an ore to lignite ratio of 1:1.8, a sulfuric acid concentration of 1.9 M and a temperature of 99°C. Researchers at the U. S. Bureau of Mines have developed a control algorithm to efficiently manipulate chaotic systems. The control, based on both fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms, prescribes actions that drive the chaotic system to acceptable regions of state space. The use of fuzzy logic enables a person who has limited experience with a chaotic system to establish a set of rules for manipulating the problem environment, and a set of membership functions that define terms used in the rule-set. Genetic algorithms are search algorithms based on natural genetics, and are used in the control algorithm to select membership functions that provide for a suitable level of control. The Bureau-developed algorithm controls the computer simulation of a ball bouncing on an oscillating table, a system that exhibits chaotic behavior.

In ball milling the rates of breakage vary primarily with the size distribution of powder in the mill. Using an approximate solution to the batch-grinding equation, the acceleration and deceleration of breakage rates of all individual size classes are determined when the grinding environment is varied. Experimental results with limestone and copper ore show time-dependent breakage rates under both dry and wet grinding conditions. The effect of grinding additives on breakage rates is also studied. In general, breakage rates increase for coarse sizes and decrease for fine sizes with an increase in the fines present in the mill. Such variations have strong implications in closed-circuit grinding.

Ground water inflow into a mine and the re¬sultant impact on district hydrology can be pre¬dicted on a site specific basis once the ground water flow systems at the site are sufficiently well under¬stood so that a valid conceptual model can be de¬veloped. Ground water flow systems are controlled by the hydrogeologic properties of the materials at the, site, including hydraulic continuity along flow paths, and boundary conditions. Preliminary delin¬eation of hydrostratigraphic units for conceptual models frequently can be based on surface water data; specifically, spring locations and the gain-loss reaches of streams. Quantitative predictions of mine water inflow and its impact on regional hydrology require col¬lection and analysis of numerous types of data. Hydraulic conductivity must be defined quantita¬tively both parallel and perpendicular to bedding as well as areally for each hydrostratigraphic unit. The characteristics of the Davis shale in case his¬tory number 2 illustrate this concept very well. The storage characteristics also must be determined for each hydrostratigraphic unit and the potential or hydrostatic head should be quantified vertically and areally for each unit. The potentiometric measure¬ments in the Bonneterre Formation as discussed in case history number 2 illustrate this point. The data collection and data analysis techniques constitute the weak link in the analysis of mine inflow and district impact. The technology for char¬acterizing a mine site in the field has lagged behind the technology for mathematical simulation; we at¬tribute this development to the fact that computer modeling is relatively inexpensive compared to field data collection and analysis. On-site tests provide the best means of quan¬tifying hydraulic conductivity parallel to bedding and the storage characteristics of the unit. Pump tests with multiple observation wells provide the best information from on site tests. Hydrogeologie boundaries can be located from such multiple well tests. Multiport piezometers provide a means for determining the vertical potential in a single borehole. Borehole geophysics can facilitate the def¬inition of hydrostratigraphic units. Vertical hy¬draulic conductivity is difficult but not impossible to quantify with existing field test methods; labo¬ratory tests of cores fail to give a value represent¬ative of the field situation. The storage characteristics of a confined (artesian) hydro¬stratigraphic unit can be difficult to quantify when pumping changes the confined unit to an uncon¬fined (water table) case after depressurization and dewatering. Transmissivity and storage coefficient can be approximated to some extent for given field con¬ditions by computer modeling if enough is known about hydrogeologic boundaries. Modeling can be used in a trial-and-error approach to match transmissivity and storage coefficients to existing water level data corresponding to estimated discharge rates. A solution can also be obtained using a tech¬nique referred to as the inverse method. Unfortu¬nately, such a solution is seldom unique. Fracture flow models exist but practicality usu¬ally necessitates reversion to a basic Darcy flow model. Data requirements for fracture flow models could be difficult to fulfill where fracture aperture, spacing, orientation, and length are required. Ob¬taining such data at depth prior to mining would be impossible for any mine simulation in fractured media. We are of the opinion that most fractured media simulations can be accomplished using con¬ventional Darcy flow models by viewing the field problem on a macroscopic scale. The real challenge is to delineate hydrostratigraphic units properly in the field. The question of whether a broken-up fault zone is an aquifer or a barrier boundary is seldom simple. The fractures usually can be treated as an equivalent porous medium in either case. Only a few techniques exist for predicting un¬derground mine water inflow. These techniques fre¬quently are designed to evaluate shaft or tunnel inflow under steady-state head conditions in a sin¬gle layer rather than in multiple hydrostratigraphic units. The relationship between collector concentration and the solution pH at which flotation occurs is discussed for different minerals. When flotation results are plotted as log of the concentration against pH, the values define areas of total, partial or no flotation. The experiments were performed in three different conditions: a) floating with the same solution used for conditioning; b) floating with water at the same pH as the conditioning solution; and c) floating with water at pH = 7. In each case, the results obtained are quite different. It is suggested that the presence of a second layer of collector reduces flotation over some domains in the graphs. These domains are called depression areas.

Careful consideration is given to the type of cleaning equipment and control systems to be used when selecting circuits for washing fine coal (0.5 mm x 0, or 28 mesh x 0, size fraction). However, desliming, declaying, and sizing procedures required for efficient operation normally are not evaluated in sufficient detail, resulting in disappointing system performance. This paper details desliming and de. watering circuit design that is effective based on recent test data. The circuit maintains control of the 0.5 mm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) (declayed) size fraction with minimal misplaced material and maximized circuit efficiency. A discussion of circuit design parameters and control systems, as well as results from the testing program, are included in this text.

Model enhanced Expert control has been implemented at the Newmont Lone Tree mill grinding plant as well as rule based Expert control for flotation and thickening circuits. The project has been successful in producing benefits but more importantly has contributed to an ongoing effort for continuous process improvement. This paper discusses how the control at Lone Tree has evolved and the part that Expert control has played in the overall improvements made. Specific examples of how the advanced control has integrated with instrumentation and stabilizing control are given and illustrations of how it has been effective in defining limitations and bottlenecks in the process or process control areas are provided.

Establishment and monitoring of revegetation in areas affected by mining activities is quite often a difficult task. The efficiency of the scheme applied can be substantially improved by using simple adequate indicators so that progress and trends can be plotted, elucidated and assessed over time. Sustainable revegetation management indicators should take into account soil quality and area characteristics, as well as social, economic and political aspects. In the present paper an interactive prototype Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) is presented. The system, based on methodological studies, has been designed to identify and interpret indicators that can be used for the evaluation of revegetation efficiency. It provides a platform for formulating indicators describing biophysical, socio-cultural and economic processes during the entire revegetation period. It integrates modular assessment, database management sub-systems and Geographical Information System (GIS). It is structured in a way that takes into account the project environment, soil quality, land characteristics, data acquisition control, output engines and spatial analysis. The output generates visual quality diagrams and interactive attribute quality maps that elucidate revegetation issues.

INTRODUCTION According to a recent analysis by Schiager et al.(1981), inhalation of radon daughters continues to contribute the largest risk from exposure to radioactive materials in underground uranium mines. The American National Standards Institute (1973) has published a concensus standard for radiation protection in uranium mines. According to this standard, a monitoring system for radon daughters must be capable of measuring the annual accumulated exposure in working level months within an uncertainty interval of 50% at the 95% confidence level. To satisfy this criterion, uranium mining companies in the USA have adopted a procedure consisting of single or periodic measurements of the air concentration of radon daughters. All of the measurement methods sample a known volume of air through a filter. After a specified delay interval, the filter is analyzed for radioactivity. The exposure rate from total airborne potential alpha energy in units of working level (WL) is estimated from the measured activity on the filter. For control purposes, this measurement establishes whether or not a work area is safe for occupancy by miners. For routine dosimetry, the concentration estimated from the grab sample is assigned to the appropriate work area. It is then assumed that the concentration of radon progeny is equal to the average of the two measurements at the beginning and end of the specified interval. Meanwhile, the work locations and exposure times of each miner are recorded on the daily time card and verified by the shift supervisor. Most cards provide space for 15-minute time intervals. The exposure in working-level hours (WL-hr) for each shift is obtained by summing the time spent in a given location multiplied by the exposure rate (WL) assigned to that location.The exposure of an individual miner to radon progeny is summarized on a weekly basis and commonly reviewed each month. These values are then accumulated in units of working level- months (WLM) during the calendar year. EVALUATION TECHNIQUE AND RESULTS The evaluation of grab sampling methods for monitoring exposure to radon progeny is presented in two sections. The first section examines each method individually according to accuracy, precision, and uncertainties attributed to human errors. The second section includes an analysis of procedures which are common to all measurement methods. The ultimate goal is to determine whether a specific measurement method, or grab sampling in general, can fulfill the criterion that the annual accumulated exposure of each miner be known to within ± 50% at the 95% confidence level. In addition it is essential that the above criterion be satisfied at an acceptable cost to the mining company. The results of each testing procedure are presented in terms of the contribution of the relative uncertainty in the estimates of cumulative WLM. Each of these are then combined to form a figure of merit for the complete monitoring system. The method of combining statistical uncertainties and interpretation of the results is subject to some debate. However, since all of the tested parameters enter into the final computation of WLM multiplicatively, we have used the commonly accepted procedure of combining the squares of the relative uncertainties. We have also assumed that each of the uncertainties is derived from independent random variables and the covariance of any two variables is zero. A description of each grab sampling measuring method is given in Table 1. Also included is the equation used to compute WL from the measured quantities. Accuracy (U A) Our definition of accuracy is based on the uncertainty inherent in any method which attempts to estimate potential alpha energy without unambiguously determining the concentration of the three unknown radioisotopes, RaA, RaB and RaC. (For simplicity, the RaC and RaC' nuclides are referred to in combination as RaC.) The inherent uncertainty strongly depends on the mixture of these three components at the time of measurement.

This paper relates to hydrometallurgical studies on the recovery of soluble aluminum values from aluminum-bearing ores, i.e., Georgia clays. At least 50% of the soluble alumina values were recovered by leaching the calcined clays from aqueous solutions, comprising simultaneously contacting a stream containing an effective amount of a reducing agent such as sulfur dioxide and a stream containing an effective amount of an oxidizing agent such as chlorine gas for a time sufficient to dissolve alumina. The recovery of alumina from this aqueous slurry of the calcined clay by leaching with sulfur dioxide and chlorine gas showed much better results than that by leaching with concentrated sulfuric acid and/or concentrated hydrochloric acid at 100O C. The leaching reactions between the aqueous slurry of the calcined clay, chlorine gas, and sulfur dioxide were strong exothermic reactions for several hours, requiring no external heating.

Oxidized sulfide minerals, commonly formed by weathering, are becoming increasingly important resources as primary sulfide deposits are depleted. Oxidation, in general, reduces selectivity and recovery in flotation. The objective of this research was to determine the mechanisms of oxidation and collector adsorption in sulfide systems as a step towards developing improved technologies for beneficiation of oxidized sulfides. Data from microcell flotation tests are combined with electrochemical and spectrophotometric measurements. The adsorption of ethyl xanthate (EX) on oxidized sulfides was characterized using AC impedance and voltammetry techniques, and correlated to flotation response. Oxidation resulted in an electrically resistive, nonporous surface layer. The floatability of chalcocite, chalcopyrite and pyrite was dependent on the extent of oxidation. Oxidation for one day or more at 65ºC suppressed chalcocite flotation. Oxidized chalcocite also inhibited flotation of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Oxidation caused decreased chalcopyrite flotation. Pyrite flotation, however, increased after oxidation.

The dewatering of flocculated clay suspensions by compression in a centrifugal field was investigated. The results were analyzed with respect to the direct applicability of centrifugal dewatering (as in solid-bowl centrifuges) and indirect applications to gravity sedimentation systems. An important objective of the study was to evaluate the self-weight effect using centrifugal forces to simulate consolidation of deep sediments. Experiments were conducted in which the sediment mass and initial structure were maintained constant while the effective sediment weight was varied by centrifuging at different speeds. The relationship between the limiting sediment density and the applied consolidation stress was found to be the same for both gravity and centrifugal consolidation, indicating that small-scale laboratory tests can be used to predict consolidation in deep beds. The effects of the initial structure were also studied using controlled variations in flocculation conditions. The results imply that, for the flocculated suspensions studied, the longterm consolidation behavior is relatively insensitive to the actual extent of flocculation.

To reduce their sulfur emissions, many coal-fired electric power plants use wet flue-gas scrubbers. These scrubbers convert sulfur oxides into solid sulfate and sulfite sludge, which must then be disposed of. This sludge is a result of reacting limestone with sulfur dioxide to precipitate calcium sulfite and calcium sulfate. The majority of the sludge is simply landfilled, but with increasing landfillimg costs this can cost the plant millions of dollars per year. As a result, this option is rapidly becoming less attractive. Producing marketable materials from the sludge is a far more promising avenue, provided that the products can meet the necessary specifications at a reasonable cost. In this paper, a method is described for using froth flotation and water-only cyclones to remove unreacted limestone from scrubber sludge. The water-only cyclone was found to be very effective for removing the coarser unreacted limestone, grinding ball chips, gravel, and similar coarse impurities. Froth flotation was found to remove fine unreacted limestone, with a minimum of reagent addition.

Lineament analysis, a remote sensing application, for geological structures, has been criticized, for its reliance on subjective interpretations. The Mine Safety & Health Administration's Roof Control Division performs lineament analyses with a technique that removes much subjectivity. Study areas are viewed on satellite images with software that allows examination under artificial sun azimuths and elevations. Extraneous lineaments are removed through successive steps of superposition, resulting in selection of the most robust linear features. Field investigations revealed a strong coincidence of joint and. fault zones that were parallel with projected lineaments. The Roof Control Division's successful identification o f lineaments associated with roof falls and high wall failures has prompted some mine managers to incorporate lineament analysis as a mine-planning tool. The identification of potentially hazardous ground conditions would allow mine operators to obviate safety concerns that might otherwise adversely affect the health and safety of miners.

The paper discusses the problem of accuracy in the determination of the partition curve of gravity separation processes, which is strongly affected by both the sharpness of separation of the density analysis system used and the width of the density range selected. The problem is important when the density analysis of the separation products cannot be performed using heavy liquids, but has to be performed using heavy suspensions or using other systems such magnetogravimetric separation. The imperfect separation given by these systems and the use of large density ranges lead to the determination of apparent partition curves instead of actual partition curves for the process. In the paper the relation between apparent and actual partition curves is studied under different conditions through a simulation program. For different input data, special diagrams are given which, once the apparent partition curves and the sharpness of the density cuts are known, allow calculation of the actual partition curves and the related parameters.

The data bank storing the digital mapping and attributive information describing the actual background of mining operations at the enterprises of the Company is the core of the system. The Oracle database management system and the ARC1 INFO geographic information system have been chosen as basic software packages for the Project realisation. The updating of the information will be performed on a regular basis via the transmission of actual digital data on under- ground and open cast mine layouts In ARCIINFO conversion to the central office of the "ROSUGOL" in Moscow. Centralised storage of digital mapping and attributive data, database administration and navigation is effected with the Oracle software package. Access to the data in the operation mode with an interactive display map will be effected with the use of the local computer net of the "ROSUGOL."

A completed feasibility study executed by an independent agency can benefit a company in two ways. Inside the organization, it verifies the project staffs ideas and their concept of the facility. Outside the company, it can be utilized to obtain equity partners, debt financing, and other forms of credit. It is advisable to bring in a project execution contractor for the feasibility study. A project execution contractor is able to work with engineers to develop the project concept, process flowsheet, and best utilization of the site. By getting an early start on understanding a company's policies and working methods, a project execution contractor saves the company money since it does not have to go through the educational buildup twice. The contractor is a specialist in putting together a bankable document that can be taken to a financing source. It answers all the agency requirements on the first pass. In addition, the contractor can advise an owner on likely financing sources since he works on the worldwide market every day. A less obvious advantage of including the contractor in the study and predevelopment buildup stages is the importance of coordinating finance and technical input. The financing source influences equipment specifications, procurement, logistics, project schedule, cash flow, and liquidity. There are many surprises in store for any manager of a large international project involving worldwide financing and purchasing. The job does not have to be made more difficult by bringing in a contractor after all predevelopment steps are taken. The contractor can still work if the predevelopment steps have been done, even if he does not agree with them. But early contractor involvement is the preferable solution.

The suitability of large-stone materials continues to present occasional problems in US construction. Distinctive modes of rock deterioration cracking, spalling, delaminating. disaggregating, disintegrating, and dissolving help to distinguish causes of deterioration. Design requirements, costs, and environmental factors remain critical to performance. The rating of material quality from superior hypes such as granite to marginal types such as conglomerate is too simplistic but may be useful in a preliminary way. Regardless, the market is dominated by limestone/dolomite material types because of their widespread availability. Certain tests that have been standardized are widely accepted and used for evaluating stone as riprap and armor. These tests are adapted from those used extensively for concrete aggregate; they explore the resistance of the rock to destructive processes such as abrasion, freeze-thaw, and wet-dry environmental attack. The field evaluation of the rock source is often as important as testing. Important limitations imposed by natural jointing and variations of bedding are documented in this manner. The field examination also supports the testing by estimating how much of the quarry is rep¬resented by each of the samples to be tested. Finally, quarrying and processing methods and transportation are carefully considered in regard to stone quality, average size, size gradation, and cost.
