The in situ elastic moduli of rock are measured holographically by a borehole instrument in marble and oil shale. A point force induced displacement field is recorded with double expo- sure holography. Data consists of a fringe pat- tern on the viewed hologram. The elastic moduli are determined by modelling of the fringe pattern. Only Young's inodulus is fairly constrained by the present data reduction. For an applied force of 520 [ ] 50 Newtons, a marble was found to have a Young's modulus of 56 [ ] 8 GPa, near an ultrasonically determined value of 48 [ ] 6 GPa. A control system for reducing peak loads on mine conveyor networks is proposed. The system involves continuous monitoring of flows into the conveyor network and section feeders with variable discharge capability. The control strategy uses differences in material transit times from various production units to the transfer points in the network to forecast load levels that will he intersected by the discharge of the controlled feeders over future time intervals. Feeder setpoint adjustments are made to prevent excessive peaks in the combined flows at the transfer points, while maintaining adequate feeder through flow to avoid production bottlenecks. Simulation studies suggest that the control strategy would be very effective in reducing capacity requirements of gathering belts.

The adsorption behavior of silver in ammoniacal solutions on to activated carbon has been studied. The parameters affecting the adsorption of silver on to activated carbon included temperature, agitation speed, concentration of cations and anions as well as that of ammonia. It was found that the adsorption of silver from ammoniacal solutions was dependent upon the initial silver concentration in the solution and other factors. The recovery of silver from ammoniacal solutions was found to be not so effective as the case with gold reported earlier. The adsorption rate was relatively slow overall, despite a rather fast initial adsorption. The apparent activation energy for the adsorption was measured to be 30.2 kJ/mol. It was believed that the kinetics of the silver adsorption on activated carbon was limited by a mixed control mechanism.

Cyanidation tailings disposed of in a surface impoundment experience a loss of cyanide due to natural attenuation, which frequently reduces the cyanide concentration to very low levels. Quantifying cyanide losses in terms of impoundment geometry, local weather conditions and feed-solution chemistry has been largely empirical in spite of the fact that, in many cases, mining operations rely on surface impoundments to reduce cyanide to below an internally regulated concentration or below an effluent limitation. To permit a quantitative evaluation of cyanide losses in an impoundment, a computer simulation was developed to estimate the losses of free, weak acid dissociable (WAD) and total cyanide due to dissociation, photolysis and volatilization. Results of the model are compared with data collected for a North American tailings impoundment in 1998.

In 1965 Helmut Lerchs and lngo Grossmann presented to the mining community an algorithm to find the optimum design for an open pit mine. In their words, "the objective is to design the contour of a pit so as to maximize the difference between total mine value of the ore extracted and the total extraction cost of of ore and waste." They modeled the problem in graph theoretic terms and showed that an optimal solution of the ultimate pit problem is equivalent to finding the maximum closure of their graph based model. In this paper. we explain how a dual simplex algorithm can be used to solve the same problem. We show how this algorithm is closely related to Lerchs and Grossmann's and how the steps in their algorithm can be viewed in mathematical programming terms. This analysis adds insight to the algorithm of Lerchs and Grossmann and shows how it can be simplified.

Iron, cobalt, and nickel in waste ferric chloride solutions were separated from each other by solvent extraction. The iron was extracted from the cobalt and nickel by the use of methyl isobutyl ketone, and then the cobalt was separated from the nickel by the use of a high-molecular-weight quaternary amine dissolved in a solvent of high aromatic content.

Volumetric mass transfer coefficients and gas holdups were measured in a concentric tube airlift reactor designed for the microbial desulfurization of coal. The slurries were comprised of an acidified basal salts solution containing thirteen different weight percents of coal (74 µm Ohio #1) at three temperatures. An enhancement in the mass transfer coefficient, KLa, with respect to that measured in pure solution was found at weight percents of 5 (volume fraction solids, ES = 0.035) or less, the greatest enhancement being as great as 37% at approximately 2 weight percent (ES = J 0.014). At higher solids fractions, the mass transfer coefficient decreased with further solids additions, decreasing by as much as 91% at 40 weight percent coal (ES = 0.315). KLa increased with temperature at all solids concentrations, the greatest increase being 392% at 72°C vs that measured at 30°C. Gas holdup, EG decreased with all increases in solids loading by as much as 65% and increased by as much as 67% with temperature. KLa and EG were correlated with operating conditions separately, and the separate correlations combined to yield overall correlations for the mass transfer coefficient and for the gas holdup. The correlations are suitable for inclusion in system models devised earlier for microbial coal desulfurization processes, and may be used for design, operation and cost estimation for such systems.

A longwall-based coal mine in Australia, referred to in this paper as AusMine Colliery, experienced windblasts resulting from goaf falls. Windblasts were the cause of serious injuries and threatened the continued operation of the mine. A microseismic early warning system was installed and a significant success rate in providing early warning of large roof instability resulting in high velocity windblasts, has been achieved. Early warning of goafing is accepted as an operational tool on the mine. Severe demands are placed on the operator in terms of 'real time' interpretation. The development of an expert system allowed for a probabilistic approach to achieve automatic alarms. This paper will quantify the success, failure and false alarm rates achieved by manual operation and automatic expert system-based decisions making, respectively.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT The Straight Creek Tunnel site is located approximately sixty (60) miles west of Denver, Colorado, on Interstate Route 70 in the vicinity of Loveland Pass, in the Rocky Mountains. The ultimate project will consist of dual two-lane vehicular tunnels with a building at each portal to house mechanical ventilation equipment and other installations. The tunnels run virtually east-west on an ascending 1.64 percent grade for a distance of approximately 8,900 feet, and will pass beneath the Continental Divide at an elevation of about 11,000 feet above sea level. The maximum cover is 1,450 feet and each tunnel is approximately 48 feet wide by 50 feet high as excavated. The work now under construction consists of the North Tunnel, which initially will have two-way traffic. Ultimately it will be the west bound lanes for Interstate 70. The completion of the North Tunnel will be the fulfillment of a long felt need for better communication through the high Rocky Mountains of central Colorado and is a vital link in Interstate Route 70. Particle shape and size distributions are among the most important parameters that affect the filtration efficiency of phosphogypsum in wet- process phosphoric acid production. Cost-effective enhancement in filtration rate is desired by phosphoric acid producers for higher plant capacity and lower operating costs. In this regard, numerous research efforts have been carried out in different laboratories as well as in pilot and plant testing. Nevertheless, changes in phosphogypsum crystal shape and size distribution deserve special attention. In this study, the results obtained in the presence of Crysmod and Hiflo-S5 surfactants are discussed. The influence of such additives on crystal morphology and size distribution are studied under different sulfate contents (supersaturation). The obtained data are correlated with process efficiency parameters such as filtration rate, digestion of rock, and recovery of phosphate values. Up to 60% increase in filtration rate is obtained. In addition, an increase in digestion efficiency and P205 recovery is achieved due to addition of surface active agents. The observed beneficial effects are explained in the light of the changes induced in crystal habit, size, and size distribution.

INTRODUCTION Construction is underway on a laboratory cavern 713 m below surface at the Soudan Mine, Tower-Soudan State Park, in northeastern Minnesota. The 13.9 in wide by 11.6 m high by 71.8 in long cavern will provide a laboratory space for basic research in physics, in which experiments can be conducted with greatly reduced interference from cosmic radiation. A first generation experiment, called the Soudan 1 detector, is currently operating in a converted drift 591 in below surface at the mine. The initial phase of the Soudan 2 detector will be an 1100-metric ton unit, which will occupy approximately a 19 m length of the cavern. Control and monitoring equipment will be in a prefabricated shop office enclosure erected in the cavern. The location and planned usage for the laboratory cavern present special excavation, lining, and outfitting requirements. Temperature and humidity control, a relatively clean dust-free environment, and a long service life are required. Low cost and risk to the owner were basic requirements due to the nature of the funding. The most common type of site selected to meet these two constraints is either an operational mine or a civil works facility such as a road tunnel. There are often serious problems for such laboratories because of ongoing operations such as blasting, hauling, etc. Most of these problems do not exist for the Soudan 2 laboratory because the mine is used as a historical site with regular tours only in the summer season. To reduce the number of injuries resulting from fires on mobile, diesel-powered mine equipment, it is crucial to promptly suppress a fire once it is detected. The focus of this research was to determine the effectiveness of fire suppression agents. Large-scale tests were conducted using five different fire suppression systems based on: dry chemical, wet chemical, dual agent (dry and wet chemical), carbon dioxide, and water mist. Suppression nozzles were placed around the diesel engine where diesel fuel, engine motor oil, and hydraulic circulating oil spray fires were ignited. The results of this study can help mining companies and manufacturers by providing scientifically based data on the capabilities of the different fire suppression systems.

A water-balance model with deterministic and stochastic components was developed and used for the Gilt Edge Mine Superfund Site in South Dakota. The model was developed to evaluate the risks of contaminated runoff discharging to surface waters based on assumed water treatment plant (WTP) rates, for different remedial alternatives. The objectives of the modeling were to use a stochastic approach for the analysis of precipitation based on historic records and to make a probabilistic estimation of annual and monthly runoff from disturbed/mining activity areas that now require, or will need, treatment at the WTP, water storage and changes in a major pit, and risk of contaminated water bypass of the WTP to a downstream drainage. Subareas/source areas generating contaminated runoff requiring treatment were delineated. A simple water-balance model was used based on precipitation inputs and evapotranspiration and groundwater losses. Annual and monthly precipitation records for Lead, South Dakota, were used to estimate precipitation at the mine site. A lognormal distribution was estimated for monthly precipitation. The stochastic software package/ Excel add-in "@Risk" was used to generate random monthly precipitation values using a Monte Carlo method based on the distributions. The average annual and monthly distribution of pan and lake evaporation and of groundwater losses were also estimated for the site. Stochastic outputs from the model for the end of each month and year included contaminated runoff requiring treatment, water storage in mine pits and the risk of WTP bypass given different assumed WTP rates. The probability of the time required to dewater the pits was also modeled.

This report describes a process for tungsten recovery from Searles Lake brines and upgrading its concentration to useful levels. The method consists of a combination of a liquid-solid and liquid-liquid extraction step and results in a product stream containing more than l00g W03/1. This technique is also effective in substantially reducing the concentration of objectionable impurities in the tungsten product. An ion exchange extraction mechanism is postulated.

The viability of physico-chemical purification methods such as selective, flocculation for the separation of two components having similar chemical compositions and the same crystal structure but different surface properties is demonstrated. A loss of selectivity was observed in a dolomite-dolomite mixture when polyethylene oxide (PEO) (five million molecular weight) was used us the flocculant. Heteroflocculation was minimized using a low molecular weight PEO (MW =105) as a site blocking agent (SBA). Near complete separation was achieved at pH 10.5 at the 100% recovery level

The roof behaviour in room and pillar panels during the development of roadways and the subsequent pillar extraction was monitored underground and numerical simulations were conducted. For several underground sites, a satisfactory, correlation was found between underground measurements and three-dimensional numerical simulations using a boundary element code in the linear elastic domain. However, to simulate bed separation, and roof block collapses more complex models were required, of which examples are presented.

All known bauxite deposits in China occur in its eastern half, and almost all of them are found in the Carboniferous and the Permian. They are of platform origin, but contain diaspore as the major ore mineral. There is only one known deposit composed of gibbsite. The most valuable deposits are sedimentary ones formed in local depressions on the edges of platforms during marine transgressions. They lie on Upper Cambrian or Middle Ordovician limestone that was weathered for a long period of geological time. Generally, Chinese bauxites are low in iron, and have a rather low alumina/silica ratio.
