Bituminous sands of the Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation in northern Alberta constitute the ore for the surface mining operation at Syncrude Canada Ltd. These sediments represent a complex succession of fluvial, estuarine and marine depositional environments. Grade prediction is realized through a combination of geological interpretation, computer modeling, and reference to past mining experience. Accurate forecasts of feed grade permit reliable predictions of volumes for removal to meet budgeted synthetic crude oil production. This planning facilitates efficient allocation of mining equipment and resources. The feed grade to the Extraction Plant is monitored at various points along the delivery system.

NIOSH has developed an automated PC-based seismic event (induced earthquake) monitoring, system for use in mine ground control studies. The distribution and coordination of data acquisition and processing functions across a local area network is a central feature of the system. Mine-wide installations utilize multiple, autonomous seismic networks located both underground and on the surface. Seismic event locations, magnitude estimates, and other processed data are distributed for display and analysis on network nodes both underground and in the offices of mine engineers and managers. This paper describes the system's design philosophy, hardware and software components, examples of installations, and a few observational results.

Coal preparation for a company having several sources of coal and several contracts for sale of coal was modeled. The objective was to minimize wash loss by selecting the quantity of coal to be supplied from each source and the appropriate washbox specific gravity setting to yield contract quality for a given shipment. constraints inposed by silo and stockpile sizes, plant and rehandling capacities, and varying coal quality specifications were included in the model. Solution is by iterative linear programming on an Apple II.

The dissolution of metals from various metal- mine tailings has been studied through a series of submerged tailings batch tests at US Bureau of Mines laboratories. Tailings selected for this study included both reactive (as determined by column leaching studies) and benign tailings. Metal mobilization in aerated (97% saturated with oxygen) samples appeared to be consistently greater than metal dissolution from stagnant (79% or 70% saturated with oxygen) waters. In the early weeks of the study, sulfate concentrations increased with solid-liquid contact time, while calcium dissolution remained early constant. Metal concentrations varied in relation to solid-liquid contact time and aeration. Leachate pH appeared to be nearly independent of solid-liquid contact time for basic tailings. Reactive tailings having both a submerged and a surface component demonstrated increased metal mobility.

Zimbabwe The Republic of Zimbabwe is situated in south central Africa and north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The country is land-locked, bounded on the north by Zambia, on the south by the Republic of South Africa, on the east by Mozambique and on the southwest by Botswana. Nearly 400,000 sq km in area, Zimbabwe is bigger than both France and Spain and nearly three times the size of England. The outstanding physical feature is the central plateau, known as the highveld, which is about 650 km long and 80 km wide at an elevation of +1,200 m, and on which the Jena Mines is located. Because of its elevation and inland position, Zimbabwe's climate is temperate, generally drier and cooler than is normally expected in the tropics. Zimbabwe's population is in excess of 10 million. English is the official language, with Ndebele and Shona being the main ethnic languages. About one million people live in Greater Harare, the capital city. The basic unit of currency is the Zimbabwe dollar, which has depreciated substantially over the past few years. Currently (November, 1995), the exchange rate is $US 1.00 = $Zim 9.00, compared with $US 1 .OO = $Zim 2.50 in 1991. Project Area The Jena Mines Complex is situated in central Zimbabwe (Figure 1), in the Silobela area of the lower Gweru River valley. The mine site is 270 km from Harare by paved and gravel road. The Jena Mines property consists of a single rectangular (8 km by 5 km) shaped mining lease with an area of approximately 40 sq km (Figure 2). Annual average precipitation is 720 mm falling in the summer months between October and April. Mean daily maximum temperature is 24°C in October and mean minimum is 14°C in July. The southern parts of Zimbabwe have experienced drought conditions over the past four years which has affected water and power supplies. The countryside in the Jena area is generally low relief with a gentle slope to the northwest. The mine site topography is flat with an average elevation of 1,210 m. Zimbabwe Mining Industry Zimbabwe has a long mining tradition, particularly for gold. In the 1,200 years preceding European colonization, it is estimated that about 4,000 ancient mines produced between 600 and 800 tonnes of gold. Since the turn of the century more than 1,700 tonnes of gold have been produced. An excellent infrastructure has developed to support the mining industry. This includes a well- maintained system of paved roads, railway links to major mining areas, an electricity grid covering most of the country, and numerous industries manufacturing a wide range of mining supplies. Jena History The claims in the Jena Mines area are among the earliest registered in Zimbabwe. The gold potential was easily recognized because of extensive ancient (pre-European) workings. European trading beads from the 14th Century have been recovered from anthills in the mine area. Development of the Jena Mines commenced in 1898 and several mines have operated intermittently over the past 90 years. This 1988 survey provided a cross section of computer software use by the US coal industry. From 1250 mailed questionnaires, 171 responses were received, representing a 4.9% sampling of the 3496 US coal mines. Since the distribution of responses by regional stratum matched well with the distribution of mines by stratum, the survey was given statistical validity. A statistical description details the computer use by region, mining type, organizational size, the level of application within the organization, the type of software application used, the variety of computers on which the software was used and the percent of users within engineering, management and general applications categories. Overall, 63.5% of the respondents use computers at some level in their organizations. All of the mines producing more than 454 kt/a (500,000 stpy) used computers. However, for those producing more than 9 kt/a (10,000 stpy) but less than 91 kt/a (100,000stpy), only 44% used computers. Generally, the software applications were still data-processing oriented. The application sophistication grew with increasing mine size. Computer system models and configurations for different sized organizations are recommended based on the configurations used in the industry at the time of the survey.

The carbon-in-pulp process for gold processing depends on the adsorption of dissolved Au(CN)2- from solution onto activated carbon. Our work shows that coconut and peat based carbons have the same mechanism and kinetics of adsorption. There is no contribution to the bonding from carbon-oxygen functionalities on the carbon surface, as has been invariably supposed in all previous theories for the mechanism of the reaction. It is shown that Au(CN)2- is reversibly adsorbed intact on, and parallel to, the graphitic planes of the carbon. The physiochemical basis of the measurement of carbon reactivity for gold adsorption is discussed.

The algorithms to model three stoping methods - sublevel, down- the-hole (DTH) and cut and fill stoping have been developed. These algorithms are capable of designing and performing economic analysis for one or more number of stopes in a continuous orebody. The design and economic analysis of each individual stope are first obtained. This is followed by the composite stope design layout and overall economics of the stopes under study. This paper describes only the stope design aspects of these models. The programs have been written using Fortran 77 with Tektronix graphical aids available at Imperial College Computer Centre (ICCC) London and are based on the basic data obtained from Khetri Copper Complex (KCC) and Rajpura Dariba (a zinc mine) in India. Minor modifications, however, may be necessary in some routines when used on other systems and for other mines.

The evolution of heap and dump leaching has followed the development of agglomeration, materials of construction for leach pads and ponds, solution distribution systems, testing techniques, and state regulations. They are now mature processes. Possible future directions and developments are discussed. In situ leaching of precious metals is waiting to be commercialized. Regulators are reluctant to allow the use of cyanide because of the potential for excursions and operators are reluctant because of the potential for lawsuits. Developments in alternative lixiviants are needed before in situ leaching is accepted.

The Galore Creek copper deposits lie in the Stikine River district of northwest British Columbia, a largely undeveloped region which possesses rugged mountain terrain with deeply incised valleys which support dense undergrowth. Timberline is normally at about 1300 m (4265 ft) and the higher levels contain glacial systems and large ice fields with peaks rising to 3500 m (I 1,483 ft). A location map of the Galore Creek area is given in Fig. 1. In the late 1920s, field parties under the direction of F.A. Kerr (1948) of the Geological Survey of Canada completed geological surveys of the district. Primary access for this work was provided by riverboats on the Stikine and Iskut Rivers. Kerr's party had to contend with extremely difficult travel conditions that required considerable backpacking, augmented by pack dogs in certain cases. Absence of ground control led Kerr to establish his own topographic maps. Among the geological data established was the recognition [ ] that small bodies of orthoclase porphyry in the district are often well mineralized with base metal sulfides. Copper mineralization in the upper Galore Creek valley, a tributary of Scud River which flows into the Stikine River some 80 km (50 miles) south of the small settlement of Telegraph Creek, was originally discovered during aerial reconnaissance by M. Morrison and W. Buckholz while prospecting for Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Co. Ltd. in 1955. Malachite- and azurite-stained out- crops in several parts of the Galore Creek watershed are clearly visible from distances of 500 m ( 1640 ft) or more. Claims were staked in 1956 and the copper showings were partly mapped, trenched, and investigated by shallow diamond drilling. Because of the remoteness of the area and higher priorities for expenditures elsewhere, no further work was undertaken and most of the claims were allowed to expire.

INTRODUCTION In other chapters of this volume many of the important technical aspects in the design of concentration and dewatering circuits have been discussed. This chapter will deal with the steps necessary to bring that information together in order to produce the specifications necessary to purchase the equipment and complete the design. It deals with the plant as a whole rather than just concentration and dewatering, since the steps are essentially the same. Prerequisites to Engineering Design Feasibility studies will have been completed and design parameters established prior to the start of the engineering design stages for a metallurgical plant. The data base for the feasibility studies will have included laboratory and/or pilot plant test work, historical data, proposed plant site data such as climatology, topographic mapping, geological and geotechnical information. These studies will have established the general project design criteria as well as the process design criteria leading to the preparation of preliminary flowsheet ( s) and/or alternative process flowsheets. These will have incorporated metallurgical and material balances, allowing identification of major equipment items, and development of preliminary plant site plot plans. Preliminary technical and economic assessments and recommendations will have been prepared during this phase for Owner's review and evaluation of the technical, physical, and cost effectiveness of the overall project and its component process, process facilities, and supporting facilities elements. After Ownert s approval and decision to proceed, the engineering design can be initiated, using the above information as the basis. Engineering Design Phase The engineering design of metallurgical plants and their elements are generally developed in two sequential stages, namely: (1) Basic ("Front end") Engineering Design (2) Detail Engineering Design Figure 1 relates these engineering stages to the entire program from feasibility through construction.

Tungsten-containing ores are mined on all continents of the world. China is the world's largest producer and controls the world's largest reserves. The USSR, itself a sizeable producer, is estimated to be the world's largest consumer. The major use for tungsten in the noncommunist world is in production of cemented tungsten carbides for cutting, drilling, and wear parts. Other major uses include lamp wires, steels for tools, and armaments. Real tungsten prices have been in a general decline since 1977-1979 as the tungsten market undergoes basic and lasting structural changes.

Cement raw materials used in southern California and Arizona cement plants occur in a wide variety of geologic environments. Limestone, the primary material making up 75-80% of the raw materials mix used in cement manufacture, is mined solely from Paleozoic Era deposits. During this time, 570-245 million years ago, vastly more limestone was formed in California and Arizona than at any other time (continent was in southern latitudes). The general geology of each limestone deposit associated with the eight southern California and two Arizona cement plants will be reviewed. Many of these deposits are geologically complex, having been subjected to Mesozoic deformation, metamorphism and instrusive events, along with Cenozoic uplift and deformation. All of the cement plants in this region require the use of secondary additives in order to meet the chemical requirements for cement. The kinds of additives vary greatly, depending upon the chemistry of the limestone deposit, cement specifications, and the cement manufacturing process. In some cases, clay deposits with suitable chemistry on or near the limestone sources are utilized. Where alkali limitations or need for alumina-rich materials exist, then specialty clay deposits are used. Iron-rich sources in the region include iron ore deposits and slag or mill scale from local steel mills. The geologic setting and location of these additives, along with gypsum and silica-rich deposits presently in use, will be mentioned.

A fatal accident may result when a dozer is driven over a hidden void in a coal surge pile and the dozer falls into the void, burying and suffocating the dozer operator. This type of accident was analyzed by researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safely and Health using inexpensive fault-tree programs that had been developed, for use on a personal computer. Fault-tree analysis is a systematic safety-analysis tool that proceeds deductively from the occurrence of an accident event to the identification of the root causes of that event. The analysis identified basic and intermediate events that led to the burial of the dozer and graphically depicted the interrelationship between the basic events as well as the intermediate events leading up to the accident. A sensitivity analysis on assigned probabilities showed which events had the greatest influence on dozer burial in a coal surge pile. Operational guidelines and engineering controls are suggested to decrease the probability of a burial event.

Green algae taken from an acidic mine drainage and blue-green algae taken from an alkaline hot spring stream were collected and tested for their ability to recover or remove dilute metal ions. Experimental results demonstrated that unwashed blue-green algae and washed green algae effectively adsorbed base metals ions and eluted them at pH 1. It was also found that washed and dried algae adsorbed precious metal ions more effectively than unwashed algae. For example, the washed and dried blue-green algae was capable of adsorbing 0.31 kg of gold per kg of algae. The gold from tetrachloroaurate solution which was adsorbed on washed blue- green algae was found to change to a metallic state following initial metal binding. In the case of a dilute gold complex solution leached with thiourea, only a small amount of gold could be captured by algae. Further experiments were conducted on components of the algae, such as alginic acid, agar, cellulose and chitin and mixtures of these components, in order to determine their contribution to metal adsorption characteristics. However, a mixture of these two components demonstrated both good adsorption and desorption characteristics indicating an interaction between the individual components.

Arafertil's oxidized ore presents barite grades that oscillate between 5 and 12%. The barite separation plays a major role in the production of apatite concentrates for the manufacturing of phosphate fertilizers. The selectivity, via flotation, in the system barite-apatite is inherently difficult due to the similarity of the physical/chemical characteristics of these minerals. The evaluation of the relevant aspects of this separation was performed based on the determinations of the electrical surface charge of barite and apatite, the abstraction isotherms of cetyl-stearyl sodium sulfate and fatty acids soaps for barite and apatite, microflotation in a modified Hallimond tube, and flotation tests in a batch column. The results showed that the adsorption of cetyl- stearyl sodium sulfate occurs preferentially onto barite, in comparison with apatite. On the other hand, the rice bran oil soap presents similar adsorption levels onto both barite and apatite. The cetyl-stearyl sodium sulfate was selective as a barite collector in the presence of apatite, a fact that was not observed in the case of rice bran oil soap.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted copper exchange capacity (CuEC) tests for six common clays under simulated in situ leaching conditions. Regression equations were obtained from the data expressing the CuEC as a function of Cu concentration, pH, and temperature. Further testing resulted in regression equations expressing CuEC's of Na and Ca montmorillonites and attapulgite as a function of Cu concentration, pH, and the concentration of metal ions which compete with Cu for exchange sites. Using these equations, an analysis was made of the impact each clay could have on overall copper recovery. The results suggest that Ca and Na montmorillonite clays could have a major impact on Cu recovery and that attapulgite and illite clays could have a smaller, but still significant, impact. Kaolinite and ripidolite clays pose little threat to loss of copper from in situ leaching solutions. Copper losses are decreased by the presence of competing ions, and A1 and Mg have the largest impact of those ions normally present in Cu leaching solutions.

It is estimated that between 5 and 15 pounds of solid waste are generated monthly by each individual. Finding a final resting spot for such waste is an important matter. In the "good ole days," dumps of every description and condition were available. Not so now. Almost all states have adopted and are enforcing strict regulations regarding the disposition of solid waste. Many companies, owing to the nature of their business, have potentially good waste-disposal sites available. Cleveland Quarries Company falls in this group; but in spite of our having state and county permits, opposition by the local community denied us the opportunity to provide a needed local service.

Packer test data and tunnel in?ow observations are used to show that the distribution of equivalent hydraulic conductivity obtained for a rock mass from borehole packer testing will be biased if the orientations of the planned tunnel and testing borehole differ. Furthermore, test results show that the distribution of equivalent hydraulic conductivity is different in various geologic sub-units at the same site. The impact on in?ow of the major uncertainties, including conductivity, head and specific yield, is illustrated to be amenable to a combined analysis using Monte Carlo simulation.
