An electrochemical coal oxidation model involving heterogeneous kinetics is presented. This model was tested by collecting current transient data on three coals assaying different ash content under varying operating conditions such as particle size, temperature, and % solids. In all cases, the model fitted the data very satisfactorily. Three intrinsic rate constants, namely mass transfer coefficient of Fe(II) Ions diffusing from solution to the anode (kma), mass transfer coefficient of Fe(II) Ions diffusing from solution to the coal surface (kmc), and chemical rate constant for coal oxidation with respect to Fe(III) at coal surface (k), were calculated. It was interesting to note that in this system, the mass transfer at anode was as important as the chemical reaction at the coal surface. The validity of this model was further demonstrated through a comparison of the activation energy of coal oxidation: firstly, by utilizing calculated chemical rate constant and assuming Arrhenius' type of relationship: secondly, by utilizing conventional approach using limiting current values. The comparison revealed that agreement was quite close. This kinetic analysis is useful because such a model can be used in predicting the intrinsic rate constants so that the relative importance of mass transport can be rationally analyzed.

A highly undesirable side effect of the mining of coal is the release of acid forming chemicals into the ground water system. The disturbance of the ground during mining allows water to flow through the coal bearing strata and mine refuge where it absorbs iron and sulfide ions and thus becomes highly acidic. The highly acid mine water can then contaminate water supplies and can destroy many of the recreational uses of Pennsylvania's waterways. A great deal of effort has been expended to develop methods of controlling groundwater pollution from mine drainage. At the Pennsylvania State University there has been an ongoing effort to under- stand the chemistry of acid mine water formation and the hydrologic environment in which the acidic water migrates from the mine source into the ground water system. As a support to the hydrologic studies, geophysical studies have been used to help determine the geologic structure of the areas under study which are contaminated by acid water. In addition, the geophysical work has been used to define the type of information geophysical methods can give to determine which geophysical methods are most useful and to develop geophysical field procedures.

Underground production of coal by longwall methods has increased significantly in the last few years and will very likely continue to: increase. There are several reasons for this. First, as mining moves into seams having greater overburden, roof exposure must be reduced since support will become' increasingly expensive. Secondly, the growing demand for coal has forced the coal industry to seek alternative, more productive, coal mining methods. In addition, the longwall method greatly simplifies the underground ventilation network. This paper addresses itself to the design of longwall development headings, particularly to those of the United States where multiple development headings are required by law. The most burdensome problem encountered in many longwall mining installations is deterioration of the tailgate due to the combined effect from, the active longwall gob and the old gob made by mining the previous panel.1 Portions of the tailgate entry are sometimes closed to such a degree that extensive repair work is necessary to keep the entry in usable condition. The purpose of this paper is to present the result of a study in progress which combines field measurements with numerical model analysis to reduce the cost of maintaining tailgate entries in longwall mining systems.

Of the variables affecting the electrical properties of coal measure rocks, water content is by far the most important, This paper describes specially developed apparatus and methods of measuring electrical conductivity and permittivity at constant humidity conditions. Electrical properties variations were measured for Applachian and Illinois, U.S.A. coal 2 basin samples in the frequency range 2 X 10 to 2 X 10 Hz. Coal measure rock electrical behavior, when correlated with mechanical behavior, is potentially useful in a number of mining applications.

A preliminary study of the performance of a 4-inch Krebs cyclone at near rope conditions and different feed slurry temperatures was completed. Results suggest that temperature influences the x50c size which, in turn, did not depend upon spigot diameter. The bypass correction to a reduced efficiency equation incorporating the concept of a critical size xo was a function of fractional water recovery to underflow and may depend on feed size and feed percent solids. Further experimentation is required to develop an accurate model at near rope conditions.

Longwall mining offers low cost potential for coal with high capital investment. As opposed to two shifts-per-day operation in most long- walls, Saarberg Mines in Germany increase utilization of capital by operating their longwalls around the clock. Differentiation between capital and operating costs, corrective maintenance versus preventive maintenance, improved roof conditions, and economical life of equipment was investigated. A surprisingly high degree of improvement was attained. Capital costs at Saarberg longwall coal mines have been reduced through a step-by-step research and trial program. This reduction was particularly influenced by the high performance pilot longwalls at the Ensdorf mine. The following presentation shows data and figures of those longwalls. End results were 40% reduction in capital costs, which could contribute favorably to investment decisions in the coal industry in a supply side economics environment.

The key design parameters of roof bolting using expansion - shell type support for underground coal mine roof support are bolt length, bolt spacing, installed load and anchorage capacity. Depending on the utilization of suspension effect or friction effect, the bolt length is dictated either by the distance between the roof surface and the first overlying strong strata encountered or the desired magnitude of reduction in bending stress at the roof surface, The current prevailing practices about the bolt spacing and installed load are that an initial torque of 125 - 170 ft-lbs is applied and the bolts are spaced at 4- or 5- ft. square grid pattern. This seems to be a rather broad generalization in view of the great geological variances which are expected in underground coal mines. A modest evaluation program to measure the effectiveness of current roof bolting practices is to monitor the load history of roof bolts during a complete mining cycle including the phases of room development and pillar robbing. The load history, when compared with the anchorage capacity of roof bolts determined by in-situ pull tests, will provide information for evaluating the installed load, the bolt spacing as well as the specifications for structural and anchorage characteristics of the bolt assemblies. This paper presents a case history of monitoring the complete load histories of roof bolts in an underground coal mine of Pittsburgh seam.

Electricity, as normally thought of by a layman's definition, is a man- made force that has no color, no odor, is not visible, cannot be heard, yet man can control it and make it perform his work for him. A person dare not cheat on it, for it then will master him. It has laws, rules, and regulations that must be strictly adhered to if it is to perform in the safest, most reliable, and economical manner. In the early days of coal mining the power source was man himself. Later man employed steam and compressed air to reduce his muscle power requirements needed in the extraction of coal. By the turn of the 20th century, electricity had become the most common source of power for the coal industry. Steam and compressed air are still found in use in isolated cases today for specific applications; however, they are rapidly being replaced by electricity. Electrical laws and regulations are quite extensive and somewhat complex for the proper generation and use of electricity. Man-made laws, rules, and regulations for the care and handling of electricity, designed for man's safety, are rigidly enforced by Mine Safety and Health Ad- ministration (MSHA), as well as the various state departments of mines.

Data on sulfonate adsorption by silicate minerals are very scarce in the literatures. Perhaps the only comprehensive paper written on the topic was done by Fuerstenau and Bhappu (1); this work dealt exclusively with quartz but included many important suggestions as to the form and nature of the hydroxy-sulfonate species of some cations formed during the conditioning step and their effect on the flotation response of quartz. Another paper by the same authors (2) contains additional data on the role of hydrolysis in sulfonate flotation of beryl. As postulated by Fuerstenau and Bhappu, a solid form of cationic sulfonate functions as the collecting species to produce flotation of quartz and beryl. According to the authors, the solid compound is a hydroxy-sulfonate of a given cation, where the hydrogen of the hydroxyl part provides a means for bonding of the species to the mineral surface; thus, the presence of hydroxyl in the neutral precipitated compound is of primary importance to produce flotation. Although the preceding examples illustrate the effect of a sulfonate collector in silicate systems other than plagioclases, they are important as examples of processes of hydroxy-sulfonate complex formation. Since the plagioclase minerals con¬tain Ca(II) and Al(III) cations, which are very reactive in sulfonate media (1), the formation of hydroxy-sulfonate compounds with these cations released from the solid phase may well prove to be the cause for their flotation.

To protect the water supply for the Metropolitan Chicago area, the Illinois legislature, in 1889, created the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. To insure the quality of the water supply, the Sanitary District collected and diverted the wastes of 750,000 people away from Lake Michigan. Today, the Sanitary District collects and treats the wastes from a domestic population of 5 ¼ million people and an industrial waste load equivalent to 4 ¼ million people. The District serves Chicago and 120 other cities and suburbs in an 858 square mile area. An average of 1300 million gallons of wastewater is treated each day, producing as a by- product about 700 dry tons of solids which contains more than $10,000 worth of plant nutrients when equated to the value of commercial fertilizer purchased in the retail market. The Sanitary District considered several alternatives to past methods for disposing of these solids, and chose land application as a technique to utilize the solids produced by the wastewater treatment process in a beneficial manner.

We can confidently predict such obvious long-term trends affecting the minerals industry as - increasing consumption, exhaustion of easily discovered near-surface ores, and sharp limitations upon open pit mining by environmental considerations. There- fore, we must intensify the exploration for, and the development and exploitation of, deep bodies of potash and other ores. This paper examines the state of the art of the search for, and the evaluation of, potash from both a geological bias and a mining practicability. The use of indirect geological methods and geophysical techniques, followed by expensive deep drilling, are the conventional approach to evaluation and development of mining plans. The geologist and the geophysicist will have to find ways to perform both of these tasks better and cheaper.

The sulfur content of United States coal can be assessed by using a variety of approaches. The sulfur content may be expressed in terms of total sulfur in the coal, pounds of sulfur per million Btu, or sulfur remaining after reduction by coal preparation. In addition, the sulfur content may be applied to the demonstrated reserve base or to coal resource estimates. Unfortunately current data bases do not allow for an integrated assessment at the National level. Although classification of coal resources and reserves according to sulfur content is arbitrary, preferential production of low-sulfur reserves will positively skew the total sulfur of the remaining coal resource.

Lime is one of the largest volume chemicals produced in the United States. In 1979 approximately 21 million tons were produced. Lime is, in fact, second only to sulfuric acid as the largest volume basic chemical produced. Lime, also known as quick lime (calcium oxide) and hydrate lime (calcium hydroxide), is the principle alkali used in a multitude of industrial processes. In addition to its use as a principle industrial alkali, lime has experienced dramatic growth in four general market areas during the past 30 years. These four areas are: 1. Water Treatment - Lime is used extensively in treating and purifying water for industrial and potable use, Although significant tonnage is shipped to this market of municipal and industrial water treatment plants, the end-users are widely spread geographically and individual shipments are relatively low tonnage. Several significant past and present producers of high grade and bulk tonnage gold ore from southeastern California and southwestern Arizona can be empirically and genetically linked to regional peraluminous magmatism which occurred during the late Cretaceous and early Tertiary. Geological relationships and geochemical characteristics from the Fortuna Mine area will be described and compared to those of the Tumco Mines area. Each of these historical gold producers is viewed as a morphologic end member in otherwise genetically linked metallogeny. Cold-quartz veins at Fortuna can be directly linked to peraluminous pegmatites both physically and mineralogically. Silica-magnetite±spidote±garnet rock which occurs as relatively barren, discontinuous, foliation- parallel horizons at Fortuna, but as high grade gold ore at Tumco, is interpreted as replacement of calcareous units during the same episode of peraluminous magnatism responsible for the gold vein mineralization. Whole rock and trace element data from pagmatites and aplites of the Fortuna and Tumco areas, together with data from the Gunnery Range batholith of southwestern Arizona, indicate that the magma series (after Keith, 1984) responsible for the gold metallogeny is peraluminous calcic, and is quite rich in sodium.

INTRODUCTION The process engineer usually is responsible for the design operating philosophy and/or day-to-day operations of a process. Since instrumentation is an integral part of the operation, it is essential that engineers understand the general capabilities of the different types of control equipment available. Many "noncontrol" engineers have become involved with instrumentation for machinery monitoring and control as well as other plant applications. The advent of the microprocessor has led to significant changes in control, both in systems configurations and man-machine interfaces. Today's concept is called simply "distributed control." What is distributed control? Distributed control is exactly what the name implies; the control system is divided into several functional segments and spread out to cover a process. The systems are distributed for physical, functional, and risk reasons. Before delving further into the specifics of distributed control, let's look at the evolution of control systems to see how we got here. Instruments initially were located near measurement and control points in the field. Operators physically had to go to the instrument to change setpoints or take measurements. As processes became more complex, it became evident that a central control area was required. This allowed an operator to monitor and control many variables. The operator's effectiveness was increased dramatically, which resulted in greater efficiency, better quality control, and lower personnel requirements. At the same time, plants became much larger, control applications became more complex, energy became expensive, and the industry became more competitive. All of these factors placed pressure on process and production engineers to get the most for the money. The result was a continuing push to put more instrumentation into a central control room to maximize efficiency and productivity and minimize manpower. This chapter deals in some detail with devices for measuring physical and chemical properties of coal; devices for measuring the weight and weight-rate of flow of coal; devices for the monitoring and control of conveyor systems, solids inventory, fluid flow, liquid level, density, and specific gravity. These instruments have a multitude of uses throughout a coal preparation plant. During in situ uranium mining using ammonium bicarbonate lixiviant, the ammonium exchanges with cations on the ore's clay. Mter mining is complete, the ammonium may desorb into post-leach ground water. For the particular ore studied, other chemicals (i.e., uranium and selenium) which are mobilized during the leach process, have also been found in the post-leach ground water. Laboratory column tests, used to simulate the leaching process, have shown that aluminum chloride can rapidly remove ammonium from the ore and thus greatly reduce the subsequent ammonium leakage level into ground water. The aluminum chloride has also been found to reduce the leakage levels of uranium and selenium. In addition, the aluminum chloride treatment produces a rapid improvement in permeability.

Today the coal industry is beginning to use some very fundamental economic evaluations to determine the most economical circuit to produce a specified saleable product. The fundamental economic methods used are standard return on investment and net present value calculations. By utilizing these economical evaluations, one can justify a larger capital expenditure and realize more return for an investment over the life of a coal property.

Like most major firms engaged in project management, Dravo Corporation faces a constant challenge to keep its management systems in tune with the ever-increasing demands imposed by larger and more complex projects. This paper suggests that one of the key elements in meeting this challenge is more effective organization of project data. It reveals some of the details of a program at Dravo's Minerals 6 Metals Division which seeks, through better organization of project data, to improve Dravo's capabilities in estimating, cost control, scheduling, performance reporting and material control. In particular, this paper discusses ideas Dravo is developing for improved job numbering, codes of accounts, requisition and purchase order numbering, inventory cataloging, and employee/badge numbering.
