Discussion by R.J. Pindred In his paper, Davis presents an overview of risk. He also introduces the Capital Asset Processing Model (CAPM) as a foundation for selecting the appropriate discount rate for a mining project. While applying portfolio theory is more defensible than the ad hoc adjustment of discount rates, the CAPM is not a panacea. CAPM shortcomings [The CAPM, as Davis stated, is expressed in the equation: ri=rf+pi4) where ri is the project discount rate rf is the risk free interest rate (3i is the project beta, and 0 is the market risk premium (rm - rf)] Application of the CAPM is more difficult than Davis indicates. Valuation is prospective, while the CAPM parameters are historical. Beta is determined from a regression analysis of historical data, while the beta needed for valuation is the expected beta. Betas are known to be unstable and the regressions that generate them often have low explanatory power. The difficulty of estimating a "project" beta must also be considered. Thus, the beta that is used in the CAPM will be based on the analyst's judgment. Like Cavender's discount rate, this judgment can lead to different project NPVs. Subjectivity in valuation cannot be avoided by a mechanical application of the CAPM. The risk-free rate, which Davis identifies as a short-term real rate of 4%, is also subject to scrutiny. A mining project is not a short-term investment and no single risk-free rate is appropriate for all of the cash flows. The hypothetical mine discussed in Cavender's paper is a six-year project. One might argue for the application of a risk-free rate from the Treasury yield curve at the duration of the project (in a bond-duration sense). This, too, is inappropriate. The risk-free rate should be matched to the timing of the cash flow. These rates can be determined by calculating the implied forward rates from the yield curve using a procedure known as "bootstrapping." It is likely that each of the project's cash flows would be discounted at a different rate. Commodity prices Davis criticizes the "ad hoc adjustment to the discount rate." Yet, in his discussion of the value of stochastic simulation, he suggests that the gold price be modeled as a "random walk, with or without a trend." This is essentially an arbitrary modeling of price risk. Consider that a liquid market in gold futures exists. The futures' price curve, which is closely related to the market's estimate of future spot gold prices, should be used to provide inputs to the model. This is especially true of a relatively short six-year project. Alternatively, as Davis correctly points out, a risk-averse investor can sell the commodity short to hedge price risk. Is it any more correct, in the portfolio sense, to account for price risk at all ?? Davis Pindred discusses two issues related to my paper, the shortcomings of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and which commodity price values to use in the valuation exercise. Even though these topics are not directly related to the use or misuse of Monte Carlo simulation, they are important points to take into consideration in valuation exercises. Since I do not appear to have addressed these issues satisfactorily in my original paper, I will comment on each here. Pindred agrees with me that applying portfolio theory, and specifically the CAPM, to the selection of project discount rates is more defensible than ad hoc methods. But he then points out that the application of the CAPM to project valuation is more difficult that I indicate. It is true that the CAPM is a difficult tool for project valuation in general,. But the application of the CAPM to mining projects is one of the easiest I can think of. The biggest problem with using the CAPM for project valuation is coming up with an expected project beta. I suggest a project beta for gold projects of 0.45. The "true" value might be 0.35, 0.55 or whatever. Pindred correctly notes that the selection of the appropriate project beta is based

Organic matter commonly associated with Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) lead-zinc deposits may be used to assess the burial/thermal history of host rocks and sulfides. Organic matter may also have been involved in the genesis of H2S required to precipitate sulfide ores. Pine Point, Northwest Territories, Canada, provides an example. Located on the south shore of Great Slave Lake, Pine Point is an operating world class deposit which has produced 58 million tons of ore containing 3.0 percent Pb and 6.1 percent Zn from more than 40 Individual orebodies. Well-documented paleokarst features in a Middle Devonian carbonate complex are the main ore hosts. Sphalerite and galena ores are mainly open space fillings, and, from fluid inclusion studies, were deposited from saline fluids at temperatures of up to at least 100°C. Forms of organic matter occurring in the Pine Point barrier-reef complex Include indigenous organic matter, heavy oil and bitumen. Based on numerous geochemical criteria, it is clear that heavy oils and bitumens were derived locally from indigenous organic matter. The geochemical character of the Indigenous organic matter demonstrates that the barrier-reef complex is immature to marginally mature with respect to petroleum generation, and has not been heated above about 60°C maximum. Thus sphalerite with fluid inclusions that yield temperatures up to about 100°C represents former thermal anomalies. Bitumen is of two main forms at Pine Point: widespread soft, tarry material soluble in organic solvents (unaltered bitumen); and hard, brittle, glassy material that is mostly solvent-insoluble, and associated with white sparry dolomite and lead-zinc ores (altered bitumen). There are also partly altered bitumens. Unaltered bitumens have atomic H/C ratios of about 1.4, sulfur contents averaging 7.8 percent, and sulfur isotope ratios 634S) of approximately +4.6 per mil. Altered bitumens have atomic H/C ratios averaging 1.02, sulfur contents averaging 22 percent, and 634S values of about +12.9 per mil. These data and the organic geochemical character of a large suite of bitumen samples analyzed, strongly support the concept that some bitumen has been involved in the thermochemical reduction of sulfate to produce the H2S required to precipitate the ores. Mass-balance calculations indicate that the amount and degree of alteration of bitumen is more than enough to account for the reduced sulfur species deposited as metallic sulfides at Pine Point. MVT deposits, including Pine Point, seem to require the coincidence of available metallic Ions, pre-existing pore space, and a precipitating agent. A close look at organic matter in more MVT settings may outline trends in distribution or alteration which can be used as indicators of past thermal environments and processes of ore deposition.

The first phase of an investigation of the chemical composition of subsurface water and the hydrochemical processes in and near the abandoned Nordic tailings at Elliot Lake, Ontario, was conducted in 1979. The Nordic area, which covers 85 hectares with an average thickness of 10 m and overlies deposits of permeable glaciofluvial sand, contains 15 million tonnes of tailings with 4-7% pyrite. Nests of standpipe piezometers installed at three locations on the tailings indicate that seepage through the tailings is predominantly downward. The water table in the tailings slopes from the north side of the tailings dam, where it is within a metre of surface to the south side near the tailings dam, where it is approximately 10 m below surface. When they were deposited during the period from 1957 to 1968, the tailings contained pore water at a pH of about 8 resulting from neutralization treatment in the mill. At the three piezometer nests, the pH increases from 3 near the water table to 7 near the bottom of the tailings. The pore water in the tailings is gradually becoming acidic because of oxidation of pyrite in the zone above the water table. The concentrations of Fe, Mn, Ni, Co, Zn and Pb are high in the shallow acidic zone and much lower in the deeper neutral zone. Concentrations of 226Ra range from 30 to 230 pCi/L. At the three sites concentrations of major ions in the permeable sand a short interval beneath the tailings indicate 226Ra presence of tailings seepage, but Ra concentrations are only 2 to 8 pCi/L. Greater downward penetration of 226Ra probably occurs in the area closer to the tailings dam. Monitoring of a network of multilevel bundle piezometers installed in permeable sand that extends southward from beneath the tailings indicates the occurrence of a plume of tailingsderived water containing high concentrations of Ca, Mg, Fe and S04 that extend 400 m downgradient from the tailings dam. The total dissolved solids decline from 20,000 at the dam to less than 500 mg/L at the identifiable downgradient periphery of the plume. A much smaller but distinct plume of water with high heavy metal concentrations and 226Ra in the range of 10 to 130 pCi/L extends from beneath the dam for a distance of 15 m. The pH of the groundwater in this heavy metal-radium plume is 4 to 5, whereas elsewhere in zone of groundwater with high dissolved solids, the pH is above 6. The Mojave Desert province is comprised of a diverse group of mountains that range in elevation from about 2,000' (600 m) to 3,000' (900 m), separated by tracts of alluvial cover. The province is bounded on the southwest by the San Andreas fault, on the north by the Garlock fault, on the east by the Death Valley- Granite Mountains fault. Rocks preserved in the Mojave Desert Province collectively record a rich assemblage of Precambrian crystalline basement' ranging in age from ca. 1.8 to 1.35 Ga, upper Precambrian and Paleozoic Cordilleran miogeoclinal sediments and platform rocks, Mesozoic backarc and interarc shallow marine and continental sequences, locally emplaced Permian- Triassic syenitic plutons, extruded hypabyssal volcanic rocks of the ?Jurassic "Sidewinder Volcanic Series," and regionally intruded late Mesozoic granitoid batholithic rocks (Dokka et al., 1988). The Mojave block apparently was a high-standing element for much of the early Tertiary, with strata of Late Cretaceous or early Tertiary age preserved only on its margins. Beginning about in the late Oligocene an intense episode of regional north-south extension was developed in a roughly east- west trending belt that traversed the central part of the province. This extensional belt has been termed the Mojave Extensional Belt. The extensional regime lasted from about 22-17 Ma, and is generally divided into two phases. The first, from about 22-20 Ma records intense extension via the activity of crustal-scale, simple shear, low- angle normal faults, high-angle normal faults, and extensional fracturing, along with intrusion of intermediate to silicic volcanic rocks, including episodes of explosive volcanic activity. The Peach Springs Tuff, a major regional marker unit that extends across the Mojave from Arizona to about Barstow, forms an effective stratigraphic lid on the extensional interval, (i.e., is not rotated) and is dated isotopically at about 18.5 Ma. The extensional episode was followed by an interval of high- angle normal faulting and dike emplacement from about 19 to 17 Ma, and was accompanied by at least local uplift and volcanism. Most volcaniclastic and epiclastic sedimentary units of the central Mojave block post-date the interval of extension and normal faulting, and occur as a complex of marginal alluvial and more interior lacustrine facies that formed as recently as late Miocene (ca 13 Ma). Local sequences (e.g., Lava Mountains) record deposition up to about 8 Ma, but there appears to be a regional "gap" from then until at least local successions record Pleistocene deposition. Magnetic and isotopic age studies indicate a complex history of crustal rotations, distributed across a number of discrete domains, during the past 10 Ma. Some of the youngest volcanic and geomorphic features apparently developed at "holes" formed at the edges of rotated blocks.

INTRODUCTION This paper presents an assessment of conventional flotation technology. In addition it presents some ideas which can be used to change the perception of what may be done with conventional flotation equipment to maximize its efficiency. Perspective of Conventional Flotation Technology 1. Flotation in many coal preparation plants is defined as something between a necessary evil and a non-viable concept because: -Too much art is required on a continuous basis to achieve uniformly acceptable results. -It is expensive, the capital cost in dollars per ton of circuit feed for flotation and dewatering is high. -It is a difficult process to use when SO2 reduction governs system design and equipment selection. -It creates a product (fine coal froth) that is difficult to dewater in the presence of BTU/lb as-received pressures. -It is a difficult process to control from a management standpoint, there are no dependable set points to rely on. 2. Many froth cell circuits are 0.5m x 0 (nominal 28 M x 0) feed which is sourced from screen/cyclone underflows. The original intent was to obtain maximum yield at acceptable product quality and moisture using disc filters. (See Figure #1) 3. An alternate to conventional flotation and its perceived to be limits of efficiency, capital costs, etc. is to move towards such developing flotation technologies as column flotation, reverse flotation, and microbubbles. A lot of work is being done to move these concepts thru pilot stages into full scale, commercial plant operation. The majority of the coal producers and coal preparation plant designers view these concepts as being in the development/pilot plant stages. OBJECTIVES Based on the preceeding comments of the perspectives of the coal producers and plant designers, the options are limited. They can make do with what they have available to them in the way of industry standard equipment and practices or they can move forward with developing technology. I feel there is a third option: what can we really do today with what is available to us, without reinventing the wheel? APPROACH 1. When processing coal against ash and SO2 restrictions, the fine clean coal stream can be the best stream on the clean coal conveyor due to the release by size and the ability to create a high BTU/low sulfur (dry basis) product. 2. Targets: -Consistent raw coal size consist in the plant feed . -Do not put pyrites in the froth cells. -Adjust criteria defining good flotation away from yield towards maximum BTU recovery at minimum ash. -Limit the froth cell feed size consist to 0.15 mm x 0 (nominal 100M x 0). -Establish and maintain a correct, consistent percent solids in the froth cell feed. -Select flotation reagents with care. -Introduce reagents in the proper sequence.

As Edward E. Runyan, 1983 AIME President, in an interview excerpt in ME, June, p. 607, stated, "...the AIME Transition Committee has recom¬mended to the AIME Board that each Constituent Society be allowed the option of separate incorporation, whereby each could become its own separate legal entity." Background The American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME) was formed in 1871 by 22 engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Although originally a mining organization, it became a home for metallurgists, iron and steel industry people, and for the individuals in the expanding petroleum engineering profession. There are now four Constituent Societies: Society of Mining Engineers, located in Littleton, CO, 29,000 members; Society of Petroleum Engineers, located in Dallas, TX, 47,500 members; The Metallurgical Society, located in Warrendale, PA, 10,000 members; and Iron and Steel Society, located in Warrendale, PA, 6,500 members. Each of the four groups has grown and continues to serve the specific and/or diverse needs of its membership. As the needs and requirements of their industries and professions change, each of the Societies has perceived and initiated programs that serve their constituency rather than AIME as a whole. Therefore, each Society has recognized an increasing need for autonomy to better augment their own programs. An AIME Ad Hoc Transition Committee, with Robert Merrill, AIME Past President, as chairman, made a number of recommendations pertaining to AIME operations that were approved in October 1982 by the AIME Board of Directors. One of the recommendations was to endorse separate incorporation of the Constituent Societies on an individual-society-option basis. The AIME Board commissioned a task force of Constituent Society representatives to develop specific revisions to the AIME Certificate of Incorporation and the AIME Constitution and Bylaws. This was done to allow separate incorporation and to reflect the decentralized structure of the Institute. The SME-AIME Board of Directors subsequently approved the recommendation of SME Working Party #69 that SME pursue separate incorporation. Meanwhile, Working Party #69 continues to work with the other Constituent Societies and with the AIME Task Force on Reorganization to determine the form and substance of the separate incorporation. Why Incorporate? George Webster in The Law of Associations quoted Chief Justice Marshall's (1819) definition of corporation as: "A corporation is an artificial being, invisible, intangible, and existing only in contemplation of law. Being the mere creature of law, it possesses only those properties which the charter of its creation confers upon it, either expressly or as incidental to its very existence. These are such as are supposed best calculated to effect the object for which it was created." SME-AIME attorneys, Davis, Graham & Stubbs, have pointed out that the status of an organization operating as an unincorporated association is always unclear. At present, SME-AIME administers assets of almost $3.5 million (mainly property and inventory) but technical ownership and ability to enter into contractual relationships resides with AIME. However, the operation appears to outsiders (particularly those with whom SME-AIME does business) to be an independent operation which would be expected to be a legal entity in its own right. Advantages of Incorporation Liability. Because of legal ownership by AIME of all assets of the Constituent Societies, those assets are subject to the claims of any of the creditors of AIME or any of its constituent parts (i.e., the other societies). Liabilities can be those usually encountered in business but also encompass special risks, which could develop if there were a careless and erroneous publication of material that might be used in practice or if standards are improperly established. "A three dimensional nonlinear finite element model was constructed to simulate and analyze the behavior of large diameter segmentally lined shafts when subjected to seismic waves. To reduce computation time, a less complex shell model was also constructed. Transient excitation was applied to the supported nodes of both models, at the base of the shaft, with a time-function representing the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The models are developed at the end of an original phased construction-stage analysis of the shaft. Displacements, forces and moments are monitored and compared during the analyses steps. During the initial 15 seconds of the earthquake, the top and bottom of the shaft show similar displacements. The maximum horizontal displacement within the shaft is approximately 3.5 inches in the solid model and the shell model results conform to this by a factor of 50%. Keywords: Segmentally Lined Shaft, Soil Structure Interaction, Seismic Analysis, Finite Element Modeling, Ground Modification INTRODUCTION TO SEGMENTALLY LINED SHAFTS Large diameter segmentally lined shafts (SLS) are underground systems, constructed sequentially using precast concrete segments to form a ring which provides both temporary earth support during excavation and permanent structural support. The segments are connected via alignment pins, bolts, packer material and other structural components that ensure the continuity of the SLS. In this analysis, the construction process uses a top-down sequence wherein each soil layer is excavated, damp-proofing is installed and concrete segments are assembled to form each ring. This process is repeated until design depths are achieved completing the shaft. It is known that cylindrical structures sustain lateral (earth) pressure mainly through the mechanism of hoop-stress. As Timoshenko’s ring theory goes, a cylinder shell structure is prone to buckling under external pressure [1]. In typical designs of small diameter shafts and tunnel linings with small diameter to wall thickness ratios, nonlinear buckling analysis (i.e., nonlinear geometric analysis) is not considered, since the buckling capacities for those structures are much higher than typical pressures encountered at their design depths. However, in shafts with large diameter to wall thickness ratios, buckling could become a critical issue. In any given mode, as buckling occurs in a ring, some sections of the structure move inward while alternating sections protrude. Although the presence of the surrounding soil could mitigate the buckling by resisting the movement (Soil structure interaction) seismic loads can cause ground movements and lateral pressures, exceeding the capacity of the structure. It is therefore essential to design the load bearing capacities of the shaft to minimize the possibility of any catastrophic failure due to earthquakes. This study explores the structural response of the SLS when subjected to seismic loads."

The idea of automatic or remote control of the mine ventilation process generally, and methane concentration particularly, attracts the attention of mining engineers more and more. The advantages of introducing mine ventilation control systems are breaking traditional reluctance. The change of attitude is not only because of the requirements of modern exploitation technology, but it is also due to the recent progress in development and successful introduction of reliable monitoring systems and actuators in the form of controlled ventilators and doors [1]; [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. Many 'years of theoretical and experimental studies of the dynamics of mine ventilation processes created the needed base for a proper design of an automatic control system [7],[8],[9], [10]. From these studies must, however, be drawn a fundamental conclusion, which may be regarded as the motto of this paper: An automatic control system for mine ventilation ill-conditioned or improperly designed is capable of creating hazard situations in response to random disturbances, much more, severe in consequence than a traditional ventilation system without any automatic or remote control! This statement is easy to prove if the dynamic properties of the ventilation process are taken into consideration. The ventilation process, as a matter of fact, is described by non-linear equations, and it must be expected that the process has more than one state of equilibrium. In other words, in the ventilation process may exist not only one but also more than one steady-states of flow, of which some are stable and others unstable. In certain circumstances, there may be no steady-state at all, and the process will oscillate [8], [11] , [12] . The state of flow in a network tends towards a steady-state and the actual steady-state established will depend on the initial conditions or disturbances in flow (fire,. etc.), which steady-state from the total number that will be . We frequently observe jumps from one steady-state to another. Disturbances in flow conditions which may cause such transitions are events of random character, occurring very rarely. Concluding, it must be stressed that there has to be a control system adjusted to the ventilation process in order to avoid situations mentioned above. There is only one alternative available and suitable for examination or study of the dynamics of a given mine ventilation problem: either by continuous monitoring of the real process, or numerical simulation of the process using a mathematical model. The advantages of the second method are obvious. This method allows consideration of every possible case very quickly and cheaply in relation to the first method. The aim of the paper is to show again that the simulation of the mine ventilation process and particularly a methane concentration process, separately or combined together with a control system, are real possibilities. A simulation method requires precise specification of the problem under consideration. For example, if we intend to examine a methane-concentration control system, the following items have to be specified: - expected target function of the control system. - structure of the control system. - mathematical model of control system, including sensor system, data preparation system, controllers, decision routine, regulators, etc. - structure of mine ventilation network. - mathematical model of ventilation process, including air flow and methane concentration processes. - pattern of disturbances which may occur in the controlled process as well as initial conditions on a 'start-up' of the system. Using typical computer programs for numerical solution of equations in the mathematical model of the problem involved, we are able, within the adequacy of the model, to simulate every case specified by the disturbances and initial conditions. As a result of simulation, it is expected that the following parameters could be defined: - transient flow in the network. - transient state of methane concentration in working areas. - stability of flow and methane concent¬ration. - stability of the control system. - range of control. - efficiency of control, etc. It is obvious that simulation methods readily allow for modifications to existing systems such that desired results will be obtained. The Spa1lation Process Because of the low thermal conductivity of many hard rocks, rapid heating of these rocks produces a thin surface layer in which the temperatures attain high values. Thermal expansion of this surface layer is constrained by the reminder of the still cool rock, and when stresses within the surface rock become high enough, the surface rock breaks away from the cooler rock behind it and flies or falls off as a thin flake called a spall. Then the next, newly exposed surface is heated, and the process continues. This process is the basis of spallation drilling. The hot gases from a jet burner provide the heat for spallation to occur, and their high velocity provides a scouring action that transfers heat to the rock and removes the spalls as rapidly as they form. Spallation is a process which works in very hard rock. It is dependent upon the thermal expansion coefficient and the thermal diffusivity of the rock but is also affected by any discontinuities in the rock. To date the efforts which have been made to evaluate the various rock according to their spallability has been minimal. As the success of this process is dependent upon the characteristics of rock it is expected that the study of rock mechanics will prove to be of greater value to this program than to the other mechanism for drilling and excavating rock. Commercial Uses of SPALLATION In the 19408s, the Linde Air Products Division of Union Carbide (UC 1 began developing spallation for use in mining taconite ore, which is presently the chief source of iron in the United States. In this work UC developed a jet-piercing tool that burned fuel oil with oxygen to produce spallation and contained mechanical cutters to remove rock that was not amenable to spallation. The UC jet-piercing machines have since produced about 40 million feet of shallow blast holes used for emplacing explosives in the taconite mines. During this work it was found that hole diameters could be increased by merely reducing the advance rate of the burners and that existing holes could be enlarged by making another pass through the hole with the same burner. The Browning Engineering Go. of Hanover, N.H., has developed a hand-held spallation burner to cut slots in granite. It has been used for a quarter of a century and is now standard equipment for quarrying granite throughout the world. This burner, which resembles a small jet engine oriented with its exhaust pointed downward, is the forerunner of a flame jet burner used to spall experimental holes in granite at maximum rates in excess of 100 ft/hr when operating in hard, competent granite. It uses No. 2 fuel oil, which is burned with compressed air. The system uses water to cool the burner and the exhaust gases. These gases, along with the steam produced from the cooling water, blow the spalls from the hole. Experimental Work Theoretical and experimental work has been accomplished by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Los Alamos National Laboratory. This work is reported in Refs. (3) and (4). To verify the experimental results of this work laboratory scaled down field tests were conducted using two we1 1 characterized granites from quarries in Barre, VT and Westerby, RI, under defined heating conditions. In the laboratory tests a propane - oxygen heating torch was used to direct a flame at the granite surface and the spal 1 ing process was examined at various heating rates with a high-speed video taping system operated at 200 frame per second. This produced a time-lapse sequence where the onset of the spallation process was easily distinguished. Also the heat flux from the torch to a flat surface at various stand off distances and flows was measured. INTRODUCTION Dynamic (seismic or microseismic) methods of determining the stability of structures in rock are based on detecting and analyzing the characteristics of seismic energy that has originated from or traveled through the rock mass. This seismic energy can be in the form of naturally occurring rock noise energy resulting from structural adjustments within the rock or can be introduced into the structure by physical means, such as by blasting or impact. In either case, the seismic energy radiating through the rock mass can be detected using standard equipment and can be analyzed by established techniques to reveal a wide variety of information concerning the condition and stability of the rock mass through which the energy has traveled. In the following sections, the basic instrumentation required for seismic and microseismic studies is described, and some of the presently used applications of these methods are discussed to exemplify the state of the art. INSTRUMENTATION Seismic disturbances in a rock structure generate two types of seismic wave radiation, body waves and sometimes surface waves, which radiate outward in all direc¬tions from the source of the disturbance. Underground mining applications are generally concerned only with discerning the characteristics of the resulting body waves, i.e., the compressional (p-wave) and the shear (s-wave) energy. As these two forms of energy travel through the rock structure, the particles of the rock mass are caused to vibrate, and the vibration character¬istics resulting from each of the two types of wave are distinct. Some important differences are: 1) Compressional and shear waves travel at different velocities through the rock structure. 2) The frequency at which each wave causes particles to vibrate is different, and may range from about 50 to 100 000 Hz. 3) The amplitude or energy level of each wave is different, with the shear energy usually being the greatest. These differences form the basis for equipment se¬lection for individual studies and for modern data analysis techniques. The following sections describe the basic equipment necessary to detect and record seismic wave energy data and show several examples of analysis procedures and how these procedures have been used. In principle, seismic equipment is very simple. It consists of a geophone (or geophones) to detect the seismic energy vibration and convert that vibration to an electric signal, an amplification system to increase the level of that signal, and a means of monitoring and/or recording the signals detected. Fig. 1 is a block diagram of a typical system. The following sections offer a very brief discussion of system components and their individual functions. A more complete discussion is given by Blake, Leighton, and Duvall (1974). Geophones The function of the geophone is to detect the vibrations caused by the passing of the seismic wave energy and to convert that vibration into an electrical signal that displays both the amplitude and frequency characteristics of the vibration. Particle motion or vibration can be quantified and measured by measuring displacement, velocity, or acceleration of the particles. Thus, there are three types of geophones: displacement gages, velocity gages, and accelerometers. The choice of gage depends on the characteristic frequencies of the seismic energy to be monitored and the sensitivities of each type of geophone. In general, displacement gages are used for low-frequency monitoring (periods to 1.0 Hz), velocity gages for medium-frequency monitoring (1.0 to 250 Hz), and accelerometers for high-frequency monitoring (250 to 10 000+ Hz). Experience has shown that in underground studies, the choice of which gage to use lies between velocity gages and accelerometers. An easy, accurate method for selection of gage type is discussed by Blake, Leighton, and Duvall (1974). Once the type of geophone has been selected for use, it must be properly installed, and in the installation procedure the most important step is insuring that the gage is firmly attached to a competent portion of the rock structure. Poorly mounted geophones may entirely fail to recognize low-level seismic signals and will distort the information from signals they do see. Amplifiers Seismic events associated with mine structures occur over a very broad range of energy which results in a broad range of geophone output levels. In general, geophone output levels occur in the microvolt to low milli-volt range, and it is necessary to amplify these signals in order to drive recording or monitoring equipment. INTRODUCTION Proliferation and enhanced synthesis of collagen by pulmonary fibroblasts have been shown to be key steps in the development of chronic silicosis (Goldstein and Fine, 1986). The regulation of lung fibroblast proliferation by cytokines released from alveolar macrophages may be an important pathogenetic mechanism in the development of the fibrotic process (Kelley, 1990). One cytokine, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), promotes fibroblast proliferation by inducing the movement of quiescent (Go) cells into the C1 phase of the cell cycle (Chen and Rabinovitch, 1989). Others regulate the rate of transition of fibroblasts from Gl into the S phase (Leof et al., 1982). These two classes of cytokines have been termed, respectively, competence and progression factors. One approach used to examine the release of cytokines from macrophages is the fibroblast proliferation assay in which fibroblasts are exposed to culture supernatants from macrophages exposed to various stimuli. In most of these assays, the supernatant contains fetal calf serum which provides the competence factor(s) necessary to facilitate the proliferation of fibroblasts (Bitterman et al., 1982; Bitterman et al., 1983; Elias et al., 1988). Recently, a fibroblast proliferation assay using plateletpoor plasma (lacking competence factor(s)) as a substitute for fetal calf serum has been described (Kuman et al., 1988; Bauman et al., 1990). In this assay, the release of a competence-inducing PDGF-like growth factor from rat and human macrophages can be distinguished from other cytokines that act as progression factors. In order to obtain more consistent results and with the ultimate goal to be able to discriminate between the effects of competence factors as opposed to progression factors, we have conducted experiments to determine the appropriate concentrations of plasma and PDGF required for imparting competence in the fibroblast proliferation assay. We tested lung fibroblast cells obtained from explants of rat lung tissue and also a fetal human lung fibroblast cell line obtained from American Tissue Culture Collection (ATCC153). MATERIALS AND METHODS Fibroblasts Specific pathogen-free, male Sprague-Dawley rats were use in some studies. Animals were given a lethal intraperitoneal dose of sodium pentobarbital. Fibroblasts were isolated by chopping the lung in enzymes that digest the connective tissue but liberate lung cells for further study (Rabovsky et al., 1989). After digestion, the remaining lung tissue suspension was filtered through two layers of sterile gauze and centrifuged to recover lung fibroblasts. These were resuspended in culture medium that contained 10% fetal calf serum and distributed to culture plates for growth. In other experiments, a human fetal lung fibroblast cell line, obtained from American Type Culture Collection, Rockville, MD, 20852, was used instead of rat lung fibroblasts. In these cases, a 1 ml ampule containing human fetal fibroblasts was plated into a tissue culture flask containing medium plus 10% fetal calf serum. For both types of fibroblasts, culture medium was changed 3 times per week and cultures were incubated at 37°C until confluent. Harvested rat and human lung fibroblasts were quantified using an electronic cell counter equipped with a cell sizing attachment (Coulter Electronics, Inc., Hialeah, Florida). Tritiated Thymidine Incorporation The basic procedural outline of Kumar et al. (1988) was used with modifications to evaluate tritiated thymidine incorporation into fibroblast DNA following exposure to PDGF and plasma. Both rat and human lung fibroblasts were plated at 50,000 cells/ml at a density of 250,000 cells/25cm2 culture plate. Cells were quiesced for 4 days with 2% rat plasma. As the assay was refined, fibroblasts were quiesced in plasma-free media for 48 hrs, since the mitogenic activity of 2% plasma was variable. Test medium was applied for a period of 6 hrs, followed by a 24 hr tritiated thymidine (lµCi/ml) labelling period in plasma-free media. Medium alone was used as a negative control and media with 10 or 20% fetal calf serum was used as the positive control for rat and human fibroblasts, respectively. Cell Quantification and Measurement of Mitogenesis Twenty-four hours after the addition of tritiated thymidine, the fibroblasts were washed with 5ml of fresh serum-free media, centrifuged and resuspended in phosphate-buffered saline. The cells were dissolved in 0.5m1 of O.1N NaOH and radioactivity determined in a beta counter. Incorporation of trititaed thymidine as an index of DNA synthesis was expressed as DPM/fibroblast. Bromine is the intermediate member of the halogen family of elements between iodine, a solid, and chlorine, a gas. The name is derived from the Greek bromos, meaning stench. Bromine is the only nonmetallic element that is liquid at room temperatures, with a melting point of -7.2°C and a boiling point of 58.78°C. Reddish brown in color, it dissolves easily in water to yield a red solution. Bromine volatilizes at ordinary temperatures to a red vapor that is very irritating to the eyes, nose, and throat. Density of the liquid is 3.12, and gas weighs 7.59 gpl in standard conditions. Because the element is highly active, it exists in nature only as bromide compounds. Bromine was discovered by Antoine Jerome Balard in seawater bitterns in 1825 and began to find commercial applications shortly thereafter in photography, medicine, and dyes. The first commercial production of bromine was in 1846 in Freeport, PA, followed by production in Germany in 1865. OCCURRENCE Bromine is widely distributed in nature, and compounds occur in solution in natural brines, in seawater, saline lakes, oil and gas well brines, and in evaporite chloride minerals. The concentration of bromine salts ranges from 60 to 65 ppm in seawater to several thousand ppm in oil well brines and saline lakes. The distribution of bromine in marine evaporite minerals and in the solutions from which they crystallized was determined many years ago by H.E. Boeke (1908). Theoretical aspects regarding the geochemistry of bromine have been published in numerous papers (Raup and Mite, 1969). Bromine occurs in solid solution in carnallite and sylvite associated in potash deposits, in halite in salt beds, salt in oil shales, and in trona deposits. Its presence is useful as a guide in geochemical exploration. The analysis of small amounts of bromides in the presence of large amounts of chlorides is discussed by W. Schwerdtner (1963). Manganese, iron, and iodine may interfere with the determination. Other analytical methods are discussed at length in literature (Stenger and Atchison, 1964).

Background The mine is located in Ebensburg, Cambria County, PA. Cambria County is located within the Allegheny Mountain section of the Appalachian Plateau Province. The geologic structures in the mine area included folds, faults, joints and cleats in the coal. These geologic structures seem to have genetic relationships with the Allegheny Front (lannacchione and Puglio, 1979). The mine's geologic structures have been influenced mainly by Ebensburg Anticline and Wilmore Syncline (Watson, 1979). Current longwall panels lay along the western limb of the Wilmore Syncline oriented south 30° west. Surface topographic relief in the area is less than 152 m (500 ft) and overburden thickness varies from 183 to 244 m (600 ft to 800 ft). The coal seam in the mine is part of the Lower Kittanning Formation. The thickness of the B-seam is the subject of discussion. It varies from 1.2 to 1.5 m (48 to 60 in.) and consists of two parts. The lower part is 1.1 to 1.2 m (44 to 48 in.) of soft coal and the remainder is bony coal. The coal seam dips slightly from 0° to 6° to the east-south direction. Panel entries are driven 61 m (200 ft) wide, consisting of three 5.5 m (18 ft) wide entries and two pillars 24.4 x 30.5 m (80 x 100 ft) centers. The mine has a history of cutter roof problems in the entries (Fig. 1) that has delayed the advance rate of entry development considerably and the cost of maintaining those entries is very high due to the requirement of very heavy artificial supports (Fig. 2). Due to excessive convergence in the headgate, installation of additional support and often resetting of steel beam, to provide enough clearance, in these entries imposed additional delay during the retreat of the longwall face, as the shearer cuts coal adjacent to the headgate and shield support at the headgate needs to advance under the steel beams (Fig. 3). The Kitsault molybdenum deposit lies along the east margin of thecoast Batholith Complex near the head of the fiord of Alice Arm. It is 800 km (497 miles) northwest of Vancouver, British Columbia. The deposit is located on Lime Creek 8 km (5 miles) from the coast on a wide dissected upland valley at an elevation of 600 m (1969 ft). It is an area of coastal rain forest with high annual precipitation and extremely high winter snowfall. Although the area is of high relief, outcrops are largely restricted to ridges and canyons. Most of the area is covered by the coastal vegetation or wet swampy upland areas. The south edge of the molybdenum deposit was exposed in a sharp canyon; however, outcrops over the remainder of the deposit were largely restricted to a few small exposures of resistant hornfels. The mineralization is related to an elliptical porphyry stock of 52.3 m.y. age which intrudes argillites and microgreywackes of the Late Jurassic Bowser Group. A circular zone of alteration, with a diameter of about 700 m (2297 ft), occurs in the north end of the stock and the molybdenite mineralization is concentrated in the outer parts of this zone of alteration. Thus, the northern part of the mineralization occurs partly in the hornfels and partly in the stock, whereas the southern side of the ring of mineralization cuts across the middle of the stock. Zoning within this system includes a central circular area of almost complete replacement of quartz plus K- feldspar and this grades sharply outward into a phyllic zone. Clay alteration is largely localized along late faults. The ring of molybdenite mineralization is partly overlapped and partly surrounded by a zone of pyrite mineralization. Some chalcopyrite is coextensive with the pyrite zone. Late polymetallic veins fill two conjugate fracture sets. These quartz veins contain galena, pyrite, some chalcopyrite, and a number of lead-bismuth sulfosalts.

Introduction Gravity concentration may be defined as that process where particles of mixed sizes, shapes, and specific gravities are separated from each other by the force of gravity or by centrifugal force. The nature of the process is such that size and shape classification are an inherent part of the process in addition to separation on the basis of specific gravity from whence the process got its name. Mother nature has long practiced this form of mineral concentration by concentrating such heavy and relatively indestructible minerals as gold, platinum, cassiterite, ilmenite, zircon, and diamonds in placer or beach sand deposits. Once freed of their host granitic or other rock through natural weathering processes, these minerals are then subjected to stream or wave action producing a natural classification and concentration of the heavy minerals. Gravity concentration dates back to antiquity and was certainly the first ore concentration process used when selective mining and hand sorting would no longer suffice to produce the quality of concentrate desired. Forerunners of the present day sluice box and panning techniques were undoubtedly used by the ancient Egyptians on the upper Nile to separate gold from stream gravel. By the second century BC the extraction of gold from veins in quartz was well detailed by Agatharchides, but there is evidence that gold was brought into Egypt from the south as early as the XI1 Dynasty (~1900 BC).1 Most assuredly gravity concentration devices were used during the later Bronze Age to separate the heavier tin and copper minerals from their lighter gangue minerals. The Athenians used an elementary form of Rowing film concentration at their lead-silver mines at Laurium,2 and elementary jigging using wicker baskets was also probably developed at this time. Agricola's famous treatise De Re Metallica3 demonstrates that by the 16th century gravity concentration technology was well advanced and a large number of devices had been developed. Chinese

Background Iron ore is the No. 1 metal mining industry in the U.S. with dollar value of $2.3 billion in 1984 (U.S.B.M Mineral Commodity Sunnnaries , 1985). However, during the past decade this nation's iron ore industry has been subjected to a major market depression and a correspondingly downward adjustment in output. The recent trend in the curtailment of iron ore production traces a slow-down of the country's steel industry. Both pig iron and steel production have decreased significantly over the past several years. These trends are shown in Figure 1 from data collected by the federal Bureau of Mines (U.S.B.M. Mineral Commodity Summaries, 1985; U.S.B.M. Mineral Industry Surveys 1986). The industry is presently operating at less than 60% of its annual capacity. The domestic steel industry has been forced by reduced profits or losses to close facilities, curtail operations and restructure the financial status of several corporations. Companies have been sold or are trying to sell selected properties to improve their financial circumstances. Even with such actions, many of the steel companies are in very serious straits, including the seventh largest steel company, LTV, which has filed for bankruptcy. Many of the major steel companies have financial interests in iron ore mining and thus their adverse economic conditions directly reflect those operations. Several iron ore producers have been shut down including Reserve Mining Company in May, 1986 and Butler Taconite in June, 1985. The latter recently filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11. A1 so in mid-1986, U.S. Steel Corporation, owner of the Minntac mine and iron ore processing plant, underwent corporate restructuring. The effect on their Minnesota plant is not known at this time. An excellent summary of the interrelationship of the iron ore companies and the steel producers has been provided by Skillings (1986), and an analysis of the iron ore situation was given by Robert F. Anderson, CEO of M. A. Hanna Company, in his keynote address at the 1986 University of Minnesota Mining Symposium (Anderson, 1986). Steel imports to the United States decreased slightly in 1985 because of import restrictions, but the long-term import situation remains dim and uncertain. As shown in Figure 2, the imports averaged about 25% in 1985, and the preliminary indications are that this figure could be as high as 30% when the final 1986 information is collected by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. At best, the industry can only hope for imports to stabilize at a constant level in the near future. Although the tonnage is small, the quantity of U.S. export steel has fallen over 50%. With many other materials replacing steel , the projected demand through 1990 is expected to increase only about 1% per year. Consequently, 1986 U.S. iron ore production will probably be 15% lower than in 1985. The 41 mil lion tons of iron ore production expected in 1986 represents only 53% of the industrial capacity, which is about 74.5 mil lion tons. Over 95% of this iron ore is in the form of beneficiated pellets. Today there is not an iron ore producer west of the Mississippi River, nor is there any production in the South. The Birmingham (Alabama) iron ore industry has been shut down since 1971. The western producers ceased operations in the early 1980's. Only the taconite operations in Minnesota and the plants in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan remain as our major domestic iron ore source. The economic situation for both the iron ore producers and the steel industry can be described as confused and in turmoil. Such a condition directly impacts the iron ore processing plants' operations and plans for the future. Plant Practice At present the nation's eight major operating iron ore mines, listed below, are concentrated in northern Minnesota (Mesabi Range) and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (Marquette Range). The only exception to the Minnesota/Michigan location is the Pea Ridge Iron Ore plant in Missouri, which is a subsidiary of St. Joe Mineral s.

INTRODUCTION The Chimney Creek Gold Mine (Gold Fields Operating Co. - Chimney Creek) is located 47 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada, at the northern end of the Osgood Mountains. The operation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Fields Mining Corporation, the North American branch of Consolidated Gold Fields PLC, London, England. The plant started up in November, 1987, less than three years after discovery of the orebody and three months ahead of schedule. Ore is mined in an open pit and is processed by combined dump leaching and milling techniques for gold and silver recovery. The mine is set to produce approximately 150.000 ounces of gold and 50,000 ounces of silver per year over a 12 year life at current reserve estimations. The mine was designed and constructed at a cost of $79.3 million with engineering and construction services provided by Davy McKee Corporation, San Ramon, California. Key Gold Fields operating staff were involved in the design of the facility from the start of the project: The Mine Manager, Plant Superintendent, Plant General Foreman, Maintenance General Foreman and Chief Metallurgist were all involved full time on the project within 5 months of the first ore discovery. Emphasis was directed at optimizing operating efficiency and in particular minimizing labor costs in the plant. It was recognized that a high level of instrumentation and control would be required to achieve this. The risk associated with the instrumentation and control systems implemented was to be minimized by using equipment and systems that had been proven in industry while utilizing the most cost effective, state-of-the-art technology available. The reliability of the overall control system was considered to be critical in view of the cost of downtime associated with the gold extraction plant. BRIEF PROCESS DESCRIPTION The dump leaching process treats approximately 1.2 million tons per year of low grade ore at an average grade of 0.035 oz/ton. Run of mine material is dumped on a lined leach pad and weak cyanide solution is applied by drip irrigation. Pregnant solution run off is pumped to carbon columns in the milling plant for gold recovery and the barren solution returned to the dump leach circuit. Average gold recovery is 60%. This process has little instrumentation and control associated with it. The milling operation treats 700,000 tons annually of higher grade ore (0.200 oz/ton initially, dropping to an average of 0.135 oz/ton after first two years). Recovery is directly related to head grade (fixed tail assay effect) and currently averages 96%. A single pass through a jaw crusher reduces run of mine ore to minus 12 inches. The ore is stockpiled and reclaimed by loader for grinding in a two-stage milling circuit consisting of a SAG mill and ball mill, the latter in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. Cyanide and lime are added into the SAG mill to start dissolution of gold as early as possible in the circuit. The ground product leaves the milling circuit at approximately 78% minus 200 mesh and is fed to an unique "double thickener" leaching-recovery circuit. This circuit has been discussed in detail in a paper by J. G. Mansanti et a1 (1). Two thickeners are arranged in counter- current configuration with three leach tanks. Overflow solution from the first thickener is treated by carbon-in-columns (CIC) for gold recovery with 85% of the soluble gold recovered onto this carbon. Underflow slurry from this thickener is pumped to the leach tanks, with a total retention time of 12 hours, and then gravitates to the No. 2 thickener. Overflow solution from the second thickener is used as a wash in the first thickener. Underflow slurry from the second thickener is treated in a carbon-in- pulp (CIP) scavenging circuit to recover the remaining 15% dissolved gold. Gold-loaded carbon from both the dump leach and milling circuits is stripped in batches using the Zadra hot caustic- cyanide elution process. Gold (and silver) is recovered from the hot strip solution by precipitation with zinc dust and the product recovered on Funda pressure filters. The precipitate is retorted to remove any mercury and then smelted into buttons. The buttons (approximately 80% gold, 15% silver) are shipped to an independent refiner in Salt Lake City, Utah, for further treatment.

INTRODUCTION Ever since miners were faced with the task of moving ore, some form of scraper has been in use. At first, men and beasts of burden supplied the power to move the scraper, and later, machines were developed for this purpose. In the early 1900s, a few mining properties used small pneumatic single-drum winches to pull loaded scrapers to a raise or ore pocket, and the empty scraper then was dragged back to the muck pile by a miner, as shown in Fig. 1. Just prior to 1920, an improvement was introduced, using two single-drum hoists. As illustrated by Fig. 2, the second hoist was used to return the empty scraper to the muck pile. However, this arrangement still re¬quired two men, one operating each hoist. The next developmental step was to eliminate the second man by locating the hoists side-by-side and using one man to control both hoists. As illustrated by Fig. 3, this involved the use of a tail rope over a sheave to pull the scraper back. The greatest progress in development and the great¬est increase in the use of slusher haulers occurred between 1920 and 1930. In 1921, the Sullivan Machinery Co. designed and built the first two-drum scraper oper¬ating on the principle illustrated by Fig. 4. It was powered by a 4.5-kW (6-hp) Turbinair(r) motor and would pull a 450-kg (1000-1b) load at 0.61 m/s (120 fpm). In 1922, this unit was shipped to the Verona Mining Co. of Caspian, MI, and it experienced immediate success in the Lake Superior iron ore district. Since the two-drum slusher was much less expensive and more efficient than hand mucking, the Lake Superior mines were saved from financial disaster when iron-ore prices fell 25% between 1923 and 1925. Immediately there¬after, a demand developed for slushers that would oper¬ate with electric power, which was considerably cheaper than compressed-air power. In 1923, the Sullivan Machinery Co. responded with the first electric-powered double-drum hoist. During subsequent years, design improvements in¬cluded separate tail-drum gearing to increase the tail¬drum speed, as welt as a number of safety features such as rope guides. One result of these improvements and their utilization by the Michigan iron mines was an in¬crease of 100% in the tons of ore per miner per day in those mines between 1924 and 1929. Since the two-drum slusher was capable only of straight-line mucking, it was not a practical machine for use in open stopes. In 1929, the Sullivan Machinery Co. introduced the first three-drum slusher. As illustrated by Fig. 5, two tail drums and one hauling drum were provided. A tail sheave could be placed at each side of the stope, and the ore then could be loaded and hauled to a central point from the entire width of the stope. During the 1930s, progressively larger slushers were demanded. By 1940, two- and three-drum units were available with motor power as high as 45 kW (60 hp), and slusher power continued to increase after 1940. Be¬tween 1951 and 1952, Joy Manufacturing Co. designed a 112-kW (150-hp) two-drum Blusher for the Climax Molydenum Co. Although there has been no demand for a slusher more powerful than this, 150- to 225-kW (200- to 300-hp) slushers are quite feasible at the pres¬ent time. During the last 30 years, many slusher improvements have been made to the operating life, operational safety, and ease of operation and maintenance. Increased tail-drum speeds have decreased overall scraping times. Rope guards, totally enclosed drums, and operator shields have reduced the hazards of injury due to wire¬rope breakage. Improvements in lubrication have made the slushers relatively maintenance-free, with long operating lives. The introduction of spring-actuated drag brakes prevented uncontrolled unreeling of dis¬engaged drums, allowing the development of practical remote-control slusher operation. Remote control now is available in a choice of all-air, all-electric, or air¬electric slushers.
