INTRODUCTION Probably the most important family of chemicals used in mineral processing today is a category of basic commodity chemicals loosely denoted as pH regulators. Typical chemicals which are referred to as pH regulators include lime, magnesium hydroxide, soda ash, caustic soda, ammonia, sulfuric acid, and hydrochloric acid. These chemicals are often used in very significant amounts in almost all of the major mineral processing operations such as flotation, hydrometallurgy, etc. (in dosages up to ten pounds per ton of feed ore treated). While cheaper in cost per unit weight of chemical than more specific chemicals such as collectors, frothers, extractents, etc., the overall cost to the mill operator is generally higher with pH regulators per ton of ore processed than with any other given processing chemical. For example, a rough rule of thumb in sulfide mineral flotation is that the cost of lime is double that of the collector(s) used. The symbol pH is used to designate hydrogen ion concentration. When acids, salts, and bases are dissolved in water, individual molecules are dissociated into their constituent radicals or ions. The strength of an acid or a base increases with the extent of such dissociation or ionization. An alkaline solution is one in which the number of Qydroxyl ions (OH ) exceeds the hydrogen ions (H ). In an acid solution, the hydrogen ions predominate. In either case, both ions are always present as water itself ionizes to a limited extent, that is: [ ] The pH scale is logarithmic and the pH value is the negative of the logarithm (base 10) of the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter of solution. For example, a pH of 5 means that the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter is 0.00001 (1 x 10-5). Likewise, a pH of 9 means that the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter is 1 x 10-9. Normally, the relationship between hydrogen ion and hydroxyl ion concentration is based on the relationship: Concentration of H ion x concentration of OH- ion = constant. Eq. (1) In dilute and/or moderately concentrated solutions that are normally used in mineral procygsing processes, the constant at 25°C is 10-14. On the pH scale, the value of pH equal to 7 represents the hydrogen ion concentration of a neutral solution. pH values lower than pH 7 indicate increasing acidity and higher values than 7 indicate alkalinity. Table 1 shows the nature of the pH scale at 25°C. Temperature affects the extent of ionization of dissolved acids, salts, bases, and water so that the hydrogen ion concentration (hence pH) of a solution is also affected by temperature. As a means of demonstrating this dependency, Table 2 shows the change of the exponent of the constant (base 10) in Eq. 1 and the pH value corresponding to neutrality as a function of temperature. It is also important, for example, that alkalinity or acidity expressed by pH not be confused with total alkalinity or total acidity. For example, total alkalinity is commonly determined by titration with a standard acid solution (usually HC1). pH is a measure of the hydroxyl ion concentration of an alkaline solution, whereas titration is a measure of an alkaline solution's acid neutralizing capacity. Thus, if one takes a series of various alkaline solutions prepared using different chemicals but all of exactly the same pH (and temperature) and then subsequently carries out a titration on each solution with a standard acid, it would be observed that the various alkaline solutions would neutralize entirely different amounts of acid. As an example, 0.08 grams of caustic (NaOH) , 6.32 grams of soda ash (Na2CO3), and 8.17 grams of ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) all have a pH of 11.3 at 25°C. One liter of each of the above solutions neutralizes 0.073, 4.348 and 8.496 grams of HC1, respectively. Texasgu1f's Lee Creek Mine in Eastern North Carolina is usin8 a combination Dredge-Dragline method for mining deep phosphate ore at a rate of 8.5 million tons per year. The matrix is thick, uniform in grade, and is processed into agricultural products. As in many other good mineral deposits, there are tough obstacles to overcome in recovering the ore. The deposit is in an area with a land surface of about ten feet above sea level, is close to tidewater, is overlain with 90 to 130 feet of unconsolidated overburden, and is underlain by an artesian aquifer with over 140 feet of natural hydrostatic head at the bottom of the bed, The upper 40 feet of overburden will not support stripping equipment and is unstable when cast as spoil. Barriers are emplaced to prevent flooding from hurricane tides. The ground water problems have been successfully controlled by pumping 60 million gallons per day from the aquifer. Only recently have the severe ground problems been overcome by this unusual Dredge-Dragline combination of mining equipment.

Thin films of copper [2.0 nm on germanium internal reflection elements (IREs) and 3.4 nm on germanium discs] were exposed to 10% gum arabic (aqueous solution) , 2% alginic acid (aqueous solution), 1% bacterial culture supernatant (BCS, simulated seawater solution) and 0.5% Pseudomonas atlantica exopolymer (simulated seawater solution). The IRES were monitored in situ, in real time using fourier transform infrared/cylindrical internal reflection/attenuated total reflection spectroscopy as a function of time at ambient conditions. The discs were characterized (pre- and post-exposure) by X-ray photoelectron and Auger electron spectroscopies. Ancillary graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to monitor the removal process of the copper thin film from the germanium substrates. Results indicate that Cu was oxidized by gum arabic, alginic acid and BCS. Furthermore, Cu was removed from the Cu/Ge interface by all four polymers. The Cu was found associated with the polymer solutions.

Coeur Rochester Inc. located in north central Nevada, operates an open pit mine moving a total of 16 - 18 million short tons of material per year. A three stage crusher produces approximately 8 million tons of a minus half inch product that utilizes truck stacking to construct a heap leach with a zinc precipitation recov­ery plant. Coeur Rochester recovers approximately 6.0 - 7.0 MM ounces of silver and 60 - 80 K ounces of gold annually. Current metal prices and good operating practices require contin­ued review of operating systems that support the operation, thus the development of a Strategic Mine Plan. This Strategic Mine Plan provides managers, engineers and supervisors a means to improve their operations through three main objectives: 1. Reduce operating costs, 2 .. Increase production, 3. Increase mine life (reserves). These three main objectives will be reviewed in context to their current status and past performance.

Optimizing ore processing requires a thorough understanding of not only the process itself but the economic constraints which influence business decisions. No single modeling technique is able to model all the different processes running in today's mines. The solution then is to use a number of different model­ing techniques, each competing with the others to best correlate the data. Among these modeling techniques are: Neural Networks, Genetic Algorithms, Fuzzy Logic, Crisp Logic, Statistics, First Principal Models, and System Identification models. Once a model has captured the behavior of the process, a numerical optimization determines the optimal operating point and set point parameters. A single step is then taken in the direc­tion of the optimal location by changing all the process parame­ters to the setting recommended by the optimization system. As the process begins to re-stabilize, the models are updated, the new optimal determined and another step is taken in the direction of the optimum. Through the use of multiple competing models integrated into a numerical optimization the process can achieve the optimal running condition even if the ambient conditions fluctuate dynamically.

Gold chlorination which will be presented in this paper is limited entirely to the use of gaseous chlorine in a fluidized bed reactor at elevated temperatures in the absence of aqueous water. The only water used in this process is that which is used in scrubbing the effluents. Low temperatures are defined as those below 500°C. All experimentation for this paper was carried out on a laboratory scale, with all calculations extrapolated frpm this. Some of the data is drawn from work with other projects which have been operated at pilot and larger scale.

INTRODUCTION In the Polish coal mining industry, the Upper Silesian coal basin has an important position. It contributes over 98% of the total coal production of Poland which reached 193 mt in the year 1979. In view of the significant urbanized area in this region as well as the industrial potential, it is important to protect the surface by stowing the mined out underground workings. Approximately 18% of the total production is mined from longwall faces with stowing. However, caved longwall faces are most popular. In the upper Silesian coalfield, approximately 337 highly mechanized longwall faces are in operation. Out of these 337 faces, 301 longwall faces are caved. One of the main requirements for effective and safe coal extraction is a suitable method for strata control. We can divide the complex process of strata control into four steps: 1. Strata investigations 2. Selection of supports for roadways 3. Selection of supports for longwall 4. Rock bursts and other hazards protection STRATA INVESTIGATIONS Estimation of the structure and physico-mechanical properties of the rock mass surrounding the workings is an important constituent of strata control. These factors definitely influence the rock stability, support load, working conditions as well as the mining technology. Complex methods of strata investigations involve a set of indicators enabling the estimation of the stability of the roof rock, strength of the coal seam and load bearing capacity of the floor. The basis for the evaluation of roof stability for a coal seam is the classification according to the resistance to bed separation (1). The bed separation resistance is equal to the strength of the rock in tension perpendicular to the bedding plane. In order to properly classify a rock, it is indispensable to make continuous profiles of the bed separation resistance from the immediate roof up to a distance of three times the thickness of the coal seam. The profiles are developed by utilizing mine roof investigations with the hydraulic borehole penetrometer. (Fig. 1) The penetration resistance is determined by the critical pressure required to cause crushing of the rock by the penetrometer indentor (2). The classification of roof rocks and their ability to cave spontaneously during longwall mining is shown in [Fig. 2]. The measurement of the critical pressure also allows for the determination of the compressive strength of the rock, the index of workability and roof fissuration.

Generally speaking, it is safe to address this conference as a conclave of Engineers, Owners' Agents, Governmental Representatives, and Contractors. As a group, we have assembled here to learn of our compatriots engaged in similiar underground operations throughout the United States and the World. We are here to learn of improved methods, higher technology, and better management. Through the acquisition of this knowledge, we each hope we can improve our own particular services, products and projects. This session is dedicated to a discussion of "Costs". The most apparent reason for a discussion of costs at this level is to expose subjects affecting costs and propose methods to reduce them. From that premise a contractor can identify three areas of discussion: design considerations, contract considerations, and governmental considerations. A fourth area of consideration is an introspective view of the contractor's role in the design construct process. Unnecessary costs and risks attributable to these areas are contributing excessively to ever increasing project and system costs. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS On April 20, 1977 the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago accepted proposals for the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan on Contract A and Contract B. This letting called for construction of over 33 km (21 miles) of the Mainstream Tunnel bored at 9.75 m (32 ft) to 10.67 m (35 ft.) in diameter. 9.1 INTRODUCTION There are approximately 70,000 abandoned coal mines nation¬wide, which is about 35 times the number of underground coal mines presently operating. The US Bureau of Mines estimates that there are over 8 million acres of undermined land due to the extraction of coal, metals, and nonmetals. Subsidence has affected more than 2 million acres, and more than 99% of the subsidence is related to underground coal mining. There is reason to believe that some of the remaining 6 million acres of the undermined land have a high potential to subside. The expansion of housing, highways, commercial structures, and other facilities has required the use of many areas that are underlain by abandoned coal mines, and this growth will continue. Many subsidence problems are derived from the collapse of aban¬doned underground coal mines. There are numerous abandoned mine workings in the anthracite fields of northeastern Pennsylva¬nia, in the Appalachian bituminous fields, the Illinois Basin, the Rock Springs, Wyoming area, and other areas of the United States (Gray et al., 1976). Various room and pillar patterns of mining have been used in the dipping anthracite seams and the nearly flat-lying bituminous seams with considerable variation in the per¬centage of coal extracted. The progressive deterioration of pillars, mine floors, and mine roofs after long exposure to air and water may later result in the collapse of strata over the mine entries, the crushing of the remaining coal pillars, or the bearing failure of the mine floor beneath the coal pillars. Subsidence then results as the collapse reaches the ground surface in the form of differential strains, depressions, cracking of the ground, and sinkhole devel¬opment. Subsidence over active longwall mines, which occurs concurrently with mining or is completed within a short period following coal extraction, has been studied extensively over the past decade. On the other hand, subsidence over abandoned coal mines receives little attention by the researchers, mainly because it is difficult to predict and takes place decades after mining has ceased. The techniques of investigating the subsidence events over abandoned coal mines are similar to those employed for active mines except that at the outset, it is necessary to determine whether or not the subsidence events are mining-related (Chugh et al., 1986; Cummings and Singh, 1986; Peng and Hsiung, 1986). This calls for the identification and confirmation of abandoned mine workings under or near the affected surface structures. Gen¬erally old mine maps, if available, are acquired, the surface bore¬holes are drilled for confirmation of the accuracy of the mine maps and determination of the potential for continued subsidence. Sub¬sidence monuments are established and periodic surveys con¬ducted to determine the amount and trends of surface movement in and around the affected surface structures; surface boreholes are used to investigate the integrity of the underground structures (i.e., roof, coal pillars, and floor) by TV camera. They are also used for monitoring the vertical and horizontal movements of the subsur¬face strata by Sondex (FPBX) and inclinometer (PFBI), respec¬tively, for determining the continuity of the subsidence events. Tape extensometers, crackmeters, etc., are used to monitor the development trends of major cracks in the structures or on the ground. These data are used to identify the causes of the subsidence events. Finally, abatement methods are selected to stabilize the structures. It must be noted that most subsidence events over abandoned coal mines are reported after the fact, and investiga¬tions are begun some time after reporting, that the subsequent measured movements are generally much smaller than that at¬tained in the active mines, and that due to lack of knowledge about the damage conditions and the exact location of the abandoned mine workings with respect to the affected surface structures, the precise causes of surface subsidence or surface structural damages are in most cases very difficult to identify. 9.2 TYPES OF SURFACE SUBSIDENCE According to Gray et al. (1977), after examining 354 incidents of subsidence above abandoned mines in the Pittsburgh metropol¬itan area, the subsidence features have a mean diameter (i.e. the average of long and short dimensions) from less than 1 ft to 1600 ft, with 84% less than or equal to 15 ft; the subsidence features have a depth ranging from less than 1 ft to 48 ft, with 89% less than 25 ft; 66% of the subsidence features are deeper than they are broad. Nearly 59% of the subsidence features occur with overbur¬den less than 50 ft thick and 81% less than 100 ft thick. No subsidence features occur with overburden thicker than 450 ft (Fig. 9.1). Occurrence of subsidence incidents varies from imme¬diately to more than 100 years after mining (Fig. 9.2). In analyzing the characteristics of approximately 3000 chim¬ney subsidence features along the Colorado Front Range, Matheson and Eckert-Clift (1986) examined historical aerial photographs on 4- to 14-year intervals between 1937 and 1967 and found that the majority of observable surface subsidence features occurred within 30 to 40 years after mining. According to Gray et al. (1977), the most prevalent subsi¬dence features over abandoned mined land are sinkholes, with depths of more than 3 ft, and troughs or sags, usually less than 3 ft deep. Sinkholes are steep-sided pits, while troughs are shallow depressions much wider in area than sinkholes. A. SINKHOLE SUBSIDENCE A sinkhole is caused by the collapse of a mine roof that works its way upward. If it is not arrested during the process it will eventually reach the surface and emerge as a sinkhole. The process is governed by the thickness and character of the overburden, the width and height of the mine openings. Sinkholes are usually 3 to 20 ft deep and may be 2 to 40 ft in diameter, although most are fewer than 16 ft across (Gray et al., 1977; DuMontelle and Bauer, 1983). Newly formed sinkholes have steep sides with straight or bell-shaped walls. At times, they appear to be conical in profile with the apex upward. If the topsoil collapses, the top portion will widen to form an hour-glass shape. Sinkhole subsidence usually occurs over abandoned mines less than 165 ft deep (Hunt, 1979). Matheson and Eckert-Clift (1986) found that chimney sink¬holes are likely to occur when the ratio of overburden thickness to mining height (h/m) is less than 4 to 5. When h/m is between 5 and 10 to 11, the potential occurrence of chimney sinkholes decreases rapidly. When h/m is more than 10 to 11, less than 10% of the mine openings that collapse will induce sinkholes on the surface.

The metallurgical response of the Point Leamington deposit has been studied. Two series of bench tests were conducted and various ore samples and flotation products were examined using image analysis techniques. The majority of sphalerite and chalcopyrite grains in this texturally complex ore were found to be smaller than 10 micrometers. Copper recoveries were low with losses mainly as fine inclusions in pyrite. Sphalerite recoveries were somewhat better due to a generally coarser habit. Gold and silver recoveries were also low and only solid solution silver was identified in the ore. The deposit shows poor economic prospects unless additional tonnage of high grade zinc ore can be delineated.

"Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project is located in South West Sri Lanka. This project, among many components, involves a 14 km headrace tunnel in very hard and abrasive igneous rocks. The tunnel is under construction by a 4.4 m diameter double shield TBM. The headrace tunnel has already reached 5km milestone and has passed through some reaches of tunnel in very strong intact rocks with no joints. Low penetration at high thrust load has caused frequent stoppages for cutter change leading to low utilization and advance rates due to low cutter life. The original machine was dressed with 27, each 432 mm (17 inch) diameter, 19 mm (3/4 inch) tipped disc cutters. However, various cutter diameters of 432-457 mm (17-18 inch) and cutter tip widths 13 to 19 mm (0.5-0.75 in), have been tried to see if cutter life and penetration rates could be increased. This paper will review the history of the project, the geology of the site, along with TBM performance and cutter life. It will focus on frequency of different cutter failures encountered in various ground conditions. Also, results of using variation of cutter diameter and tip width to cope with the hard rock conditions and their results in increasing machine productivity will be discussed. This allows for better understanding of parameters controlling disc wear/life and leads to better cutter management for more efficient operation of hard rock TBMs in similar conditions. INTRODUCTION The Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project (UOMDP) lies in the south-eastern part of the central highland region of Sri Lanka. The Multi-Purpose Project Of Uma Oya is planned to convey water from Uma Oya to Kirindi Oya Basin for hydroelectric energy generation includes Puhulpola RCC Dam on the Uma Oya river, Dyraaba RCC Dam on the Mahatotilla Oya river, a conveyance tunnel from Uma Oya to Mahatotilla Oya (L=3750m), a long feeder tunnel from Mahatotilla Oya to Kirindi Oya river. The feeder (or power) tunnel Lot consists of a 15554 m long headrace tunnel (HRT), the surge shaft and tank on the upstream of the vertical shaft, a 650 m vertical shaft with steel lining, and an underground powerhouse and a 3650m tailrace tunnel (TRT)."

In order to assist better countermeasures for ventilation control in normal/abnormal condition of mine ventilation network in real time, branch relation table derived from a macroscopic characteristic of ventilation network is introduced in this study. The main results in this study are as follows; 1) One of macro characteristics of a ventilation network, as a relation between airflow rates in two branches chosen arbitrarily, is specified under the change of aerodynamic resistances in a branch. Airflow rate in a branch can be estimated by airflow rate in other branch changing aerodynamic resistance by using empirical formula. The empirical formula by computer simulation of the Horonai coal mine, Japan is considered to be a one-valued function with monotone or extremums. 2) A branch relation table shows the macro characteristics, mentioned above, of all the set of two-branch combinations in a network. Elements in the table give both information of control possibility range of airflow rate and total number of extremums in an empirical formula. 3) It is important that when aerodynamic resistance change in a branch is estimated by measuring airflow rates in two typical branches, the two branches should be chosen from branch combinations with monotonous relation in the branch relation table. 4) A flexible expert system to assist ventilation control in the specified branch in real time has been developed by using a branch relation table for a ventilation transfer diagram of the specified branch, such a coal face and an advancing face. A fuzzy reasoning is utilized in the recognition of the safety factor, methane concentration, in the system. And when conviction degree in recognition for methane concentration at the specified branch is too low, the system searches for other branch combinations in the branch relation table stored in the system, to use other ventilation transfer diagram of the specified branch. When a needed ventilation transfer diagram is not stored in the system, the expert system asks automatically the ventilation simulation from other computers linked to the main computer automatically. The system repeats consultation until conviction value of safety in the specified branch approached

For some time, selenate has eluded water treatment by conven­tional means such as precipitation and clarification. This has been due to the nearly universal solubility of all oxidized sele­nium species, the low levels required for surface discharge, and almost identical chemical behavior to all forms of oxidized sul­fur. The last characteristic makes selenate particularly difficult to deal with in acid mine waters where sulfate can easily be on the order of one gram per liter. Approaches such as ion exchange or reverse osmosis often tum into total demineraliza­tion schemes for the sake of removing a "trace" selenium species that may be present on the order of 108 sulfate/selenate. Reduction of selenate to selenite or elemental selenium by chemical means has been relatively unresearched. Some limit­ed success has been reported (Murphy, 1988) using ferrous hydroxide as a reducing agent; however, the reaction time as reported is too slow to be useful in a practical plant design. One significant difference between selenate and sulfate is that selenate has been discovered to be reducible in acid solution by elemental iron when catalyzed by soluble copper. Since the +4 or zero valence states of selenium are rather easy to deal with by coprecipitation with iron salts or alum, the elemental iron dis­solved in the process contributes to the overall process by pro­viding sludge upon raising the pH that can be separated by con­ventional clarification. Commercial production of selenium using copper catalyzed reduction of selenite to selenium metal via sulfur dioxide is well established, however, at the < 5 ppb requirements for surface discharge this reduction process equili­brates at levels far too high to be useful to low level selenate removal criteria. The reaction reported herein uses elemental iron for reduction of selenate with copper acting either as a cata­lyst or as a coprecipitation agent. This method, employed with conventional sludging, clarification and filtration can provide an economic method to achieve non detectable selenium (< 0.005 mg/I). Iron consumptions for the conditions tested have been on the order of 3 lbs/1,000 gallons treated. This represents as little as $0.06 or $2.00 per 1,000 gallons based on using a scrap source of iron or the purchase of electrolytic iron for the process.

Fluorspar is the commercial name for fluorite, a mineral that is calcium fluoride, CaF2. The name, derived from the Latin word fluere (to flow), refers to its low melting point and its early use in metallurgy as a flux. It is the principal industrial source of the element fluorine. Two other minerals, cryolite and fluorapatite, have significant fluorine content. Cryolite, sodium aluminum fluoride, Na3AlF,, is a rare mineral that has been found in commercial quantities only in Greenland. The natural material has been supplanted by synthetic cryolite for its principal industrial use in the manufacture of aluminum. Fluorapatite, Ca5F(PO3)2, is a source of phosphate for fertilizer manufacture, containing a small percentage of fluorine. Commercially mined deposits of apatite have varying amounts of fluorine, chlorine, hydroxyl, and carbonate. HISTORY Fluorspar was used by the early Greeks and Romans for ornamental purposes as vases, drinking cups, and table tops. Various peoples, including the Chinese and the American Indians, carved ornaments and figurines from large crystals. Its usefulness as a flux was known to Agricola in 16th century Europe. Fluorspar mining began in England about 1775 and at various places in the United States between 1820 and 1840. Production grew substantially following the development of basic open hearth steelmaking, wherein it is used as a flux. Use was stimulated by growth of the steel, aluminum, chemical, and ceramic industries, particularly during World Wars I and 11. Fluorocarbons entered the picture in 1931. The use of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (HF) as a catalyst in the manufacture of alkylate for high octane fuel began in 1942. Differential flotation for separating fluorspar from galena, sphalerite, and common gangue minerals in the 1930s and the application of heavy media concentrating methods to the treatment of low grade ores in the 1940s were outstanding technological advances that facilitated increased production. Pelletizing and briquetting of flotation concentrates for use in steel furnaces and the development of flotation schemes for beneficiating ores containing abundant dolomite and barite have been major improvements in the industry. USES OF FLUORITE Fluorspar is used to make hydrogen fluoride (HF), also called hydrofluoric acid, an intermediate for fluorocarbons, aluminum fluoride, and synthetic cryolite. It is used as a flux in the steel and ceramic industries, in iron foundry and ferroalloy practice, and has many minor specialized uses. Hydrogen fluoride is produced by reacting acid grade (97% CaF,) fluorspar with sulfuric acid in a heated kiln or retort to produce HF gas and calcium sulfate. After purification by scrubbing, condensing, and distillation; the HF is marketed as anhydrous HF, a colorless fuming liquid, or it may be absorbed in water to form the aqueous acid, usually 70% HF. Synthetic cryolite, organic and inorganic fluoride chemicals, and elemental fluorine are made from hydrofluoric acid. The acid itself is important in catalysis in the manufacture of alkylate, an ingredient in high-octane fuel for aircraft and automobiles; in steel pickling, enamel stripping, and glass etching and polishing; and in various electroplating operations. The manufacture of one ton of virgin aluminum requires about 12 to 29 kg of fluorine content in synthetic cryolite and aluminum fluoride. This quantity, through improved technology and recovery practices, is being lowered significantly in countries with the most advanced technology (i.e., Australia and Sweden), while others (i.e., Surinam and South Africa), remain at the high end. Elemental fluorine is prepared from anhydrous hydrofluoric acid by electrolysis. Gaseous at room temperature and pressure, fluorine is compressed to a liquid for shipment in cylinders or in tank trucks. Elemental fluorine is used to make uranium hexafluoride, sulfur hexafluoride, and halogen fluorides. Gaseous uranium hexafluoride is used in separating U235 from U233 by the diffusion process. Sulfur hexafluoride is a stable high dielectric gas used in coaxial cables, transformers, and radar wave guides. Halogen fluorides have important applications, mostly as substitutes for elemental fluorine, which is more difficult to handle. Emulsified perfluorochemicals, organic compounds in which all hydrogen atoms have been replaced by fluorine, are undergoing investigation as promising blood substitutes. They transport oxygen and, in conjunction with a simulated blood serum, perform many functions of whole blood. With further development, these organic compounds may ultimately, in emergencies, be useful in saving lives of animals and humans during periods of acute shortages of natural blood. Inorganic fluorides are used as insecticides, preservatives, antiseptics, ceramic additives, and fluxes and in electroplating solutions, antioxidants, and many other products. Boron trifluoride is an important catalyst. Organic fluorides are volume leaders in the fluorine chemical industry. Fluorinated chlorocarbons and fluorocarbons are prepared by the interaction of anhydrous HF with chloroform, perchlorethylene and carbon tetrachloride, and are characterized by low toxicity and notable chemical stability. They perform outstandingly as refrigerants, aerosol propellants, solvents, and cleaning agents and as intermediates for polymers such as fluorocarbon resins and elastomers. Fluorocarbon resins are inert compounds that have unusually low coefficients of friction and have found a number of applications as lubricants for parts that cannot be oiled, e.g., bearings for window raising equipment located inside of automobile doors, in small electronic equipment, for the manufacture of chem-

Electric logs and cuttings records from Zechstein 3 and 4 strata in boreholes in the British Sector of have been interpreted in the light of numerous cored boreholes through this sequence in north-east England. This interpretation shows that potash salts in the two cycles are thickest and most consistent in a belt 20 to 40 km wide parallel with and a few kilometres from the present basin margin, and are here generally similar in grade to those known onshore. The potash ores in both cycles are mainly of sylvinite in onshore areas, the layered Upper the Southern North Sea Potash of the fourth cycle being rather less variable but generally of appreciably lower average grade than the Boulby Potash of the third cycle. Potash salts in both cycles are highly variable in thickness and grade in basin centre areas where they have been grossly affected by diapirism of the thick second cycle salts.

GOLD AND SILVER Cyanidation According to Mellor (1923) the alchemists of the eighteenth century knew that gold was soluble in aqueous solution of potassium cyanide, and the early jewelers probably utilized this fact in gilding. He also mentions that Scheele in 1783 and later Bagration in 1843 noted the solvent action of aqueous solutions of alkali cyanides on gold. Yet it was not until 1887 that the value of this observation was recognized, when MacArthur and Forrest (1887) made use of it in leaching gold from its ores. Since then, the process has spread to every gold and silver mining district in the world.

An investigation of multi-shaft airflow problems by the author in 1976 (1) was presented in the hope of arousing considerable written comment, but in fact-. only one contribution (2) was forthcoming. The investigation in this paper is taken several stages fur¬ther, because the matter is of major importance in many American hard rock mines with complex networks extending over thousands of meters vertically. The examples used have all been generated thermodynamical¬ly and checked by motive column (denisty) calculations. Dry air has been used to reduce the amount of time spent on the rather complex calculations, but it has been shown (3) that the principals developed apply equally well to air/vapor/water mixtures. Initially the subject is investigated using both thermodynamic and motive column analyses. The latter part of the paper concentrates on a motive column presentation. Both methods are, of course, equally valid and give identical answers to any situation when correctly applied, as is shown in the worked examples.

A glance at the accompanying table and a review of contributors&apos; comments suggest that the industrial minerals industry is recovering from the recession of the past few years. Actually, the total value of nonmetal production in 1983 was $15.5 billion, up 10% over 1982. Nonmetallics still have not recovered to 1981&apos;s high of $25.3 billion, but at least it is on the way up. It is significant that cement (+20%), clays (+13%), gypsum (+16%), sand and gravel (+12%), sodium carbonate (+7%), and crushed stone (+11%) are up. These commodities are largely used in the housing and construction industries. Raw steel and steel mill products, iron ore production and castings, and purchased scrap are showing improvement and increased in value last year. They are, however, still not up to the high of 1981. These industries consume considerable amounts of many industrial minerals, such as limestone, dolomite, fluorspar as fluxes, and many types of refractories.
