The No. 2 Seam at Van Dyks Drift Colliery was found to be made up of six easily recognizable bands or plies of differing qualities. Not only did the plies differ from one another in quality, but their thickness and quality varied laterally across the mine. The economic production of a Iow-ash blendcoking coal for supply to the Japanese Steel Mills called for the mining of different portions of the seam. The portions that could be extracted economically varied in thickness and position within the No. 2 Seam across the mine. A unique system of selective mining had to be developed involving the dispatch of two separate streams of coal out of the mine. Conventional American mechanized pillarand-stall mining was used, and the productivity was improved by the installation of twin conveyor belts into a double-header section. The method of grade control that was instituted to ensure efficient extraction of the available coal reserves is described.

PAPER FOR PRESENTATION The Chairman then called upon Mr S. Selmer-Olsen to present his paper, 'Lectures on electro-smelting of ferro-alloys'. After Mr S. Selmer-Olsen had presented his paper, he answered questions arising from contributions from the floor. The Chairman then thanked Mr S. Selmer-Olsen for presenting his paper. Professor R. N. Pryor, AR.S.M., B.8c., C.Eng., F.I.C.E., F.I.Min.E., F.I.M.M., who died on 14th July, 1979, after a short illness, was President of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy for the session 1978-1979. Weld pool metallurgy A high level of current interest in welding characteristics and behaviour and in the properties of welds was amply demonstrated by the large attendance at The Welding Institute's 1978 Conference on 'Trends in Steels and Consumables for Welding' and by the overwhelming number of papers offered for the International Conference on 'Arc Physics and Weld Pool Behaviour' in May 1979. Mine ventilation The First International Mine Ventilation Congress was held in September, 1975, in Johannesburg, South Africa, at the University of the Witwatersrand. It was organized by the Mine Ventilation Society of South Africa. Occupational accidents and diseases The IXth World Congress on the Prevention of Occupational Accidents and Diseases will be held in Amsterdam from 6th to 9th May, 1980. Rock mechanics The 21st U.S. Symposium on Rock Mechanics is to be held at Rolla, Missouri, from 27th to 30th May, 1980. Protection against noise An International Symposium on the Protection of Workers Against Noisewill be held in Dresden (German Democratic Republic) from 27th to 30th November, 1979. Management of mineral resources A joint meeting of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME, and the Metallurgical Society of AIME is to be held in London from 27th to 30th May, 1980. INFACON 80 During 1970 various South African institutes and associations agreed to organize an international ferroalloys congress. It was recommended that this should be made a continuing forum, where ferroalloy people could meet and discuss matters of mutal interest.

A banquet, attended by 467 members and visitors, was held at the Wanderers Club, Johannesburg, at 8 p.m. on Friday, 21st March, 1969, to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the Institute. Sy Edele Dr de Wet het geen bekendstelling nodig nie-alhoewel hy ons minister vir slegs die afgelope twee jaar is, het hy reeds talle funksies van ons Mynbedryf bygewoon en het baie vriende gemaak onder ons. Hy het homself baie bemind onder ons gemaak toe hy Wes-Driefontein onlangs besoek het om hulle ondersteuning en aanmoediging aan te bied in hulle uur van nood. The Honourable Dr de Wet was born in the Free State. He is a grandson of that very famous general Christiaan de Wet, who caused so much pain to the British forces and for so many months so successfully eluded them in the Transvaal and Orange Free State. He was educated at both the Pretoria and Witwatersrand Universities. He first practised medicine at Boksburg and then moved to Vanderbijlpark, so you see he has an early association with gold mining on the Witwatersrand, and in moving to the Vereeniging-Vanderbijlpark district he became closely involved in our coal mining and metallurgical industries. South Africa's first steel was poured from a l0-ton open hearth furnace belonging to the Union Steel Corporation in Vereeniging in 1913. Dr de Wet has been mayor of Vanderbijlpark and for several years has been their member of parliament. More recently, the Honourable Dr de Wet has filled with great honour that most important office of Ambassador for the Republic of South Africa in London. At present he wears two hats, in that he is Minister of Planning and of Health, but more important is his cloak, that of Minister of Mines, which I trust offers him the greatest comfort. To fulfill these three arduous tasks must demand of him a terrific devotion to duty, and in doing this he carries on that loyal tradition of service to his fatherland so evident in his grandfather. Toast to the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy Dr the Honourable C. de Wet (Minister of Mines): Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, Mr President you have introduced me gracefully to this distinguished company and I am appreciative of your remarks. I am fully conscious of the responsibilities that devolve upon me as Minister of Mines in a country where mining makes so vital a contribution to economic progress and development and has, in fact, laid much of the foundation on which our present proud edifice is built. The achievements of the mining and metallurgical industry in its diversified activities arouse feelings equivalent to paternal pride, but let me speedily add that in considering any family relationship that may exist, the Minister of Mines should not be regarded in the role either of a fairy godmother or an indulgent father.

The expected curtailment of activities within the gold-mining industry by the closure of the more marginal mines, and the shortening of the life of the industry as a whole as a result of rising costs and/or an uncertain gold price, are factors that are bound to harm the South African economy in a number of ways. The industry has no option but to regard the gold price, which is determined on the world market, as a given quantity. The remaining ore reserves al tend to be of a lower grade and/or to be found at greater depth. Therefore tighter control of working costs would seem to be almost the only option open to the industry. Working costs can be divided into two broad categories: costs emanating from the environmental characteristics of the orebody, and costs emanating from the general inflationary environment in which the industry has to purchase its inputs. Working costs stemming from the physical environment also fall into two categories: those relating to the grade of the orebody, and those resulting from working at increasing depth and temperature, together with the need to pump increasing quantities of water. The industry is both capital- and labour-intensive in absolute terms, since it requires large inputs of labour as well as of capital. It is limited in its scope to adjust its production function by becoming more labour- or more capital intensive, and is dependent on a large labour force, which cannot easily be replaced by capital inputs. On the other hand, large amounts of capital are required for investment in shafts, development, machinery, and equipment. Since the early seventies, the working costs of the South African gold-mining industry have increased at an annual rate that was significantly higher than the general rate of inflation. This rapid rise in working costs has caused some mines to find themselves in a difficult profit position. At times, the gold-mining industry has even been compelled to restructure its cost/revenue relationship rather fundamentally by revising the grade of ore worked sharply upwards or downwards, as the case may be. The rise in the gold price since 1972 has made it possible for the industry to introduce significant changes in its Black wage policy. The main aim was to increase the permanency of the Black labour force and to encourage local Black workers to join the industry. At the same time, significant increases were also experienced in the cost of machinery and stores, as well as of capital, mainly as a result of inflation. In the study on which this paper is based, the author attempted to measure the influence of environmental factors on working costs, using the physical consumption of electricity as a criterion for measurement. He found that the usefulness of this criterion in relation to factors such as depth, temperature, and water quantities pumped was invariably more than neutralized by the effects of greater productivity and economies of scale. The effects of these environmental factors on the working costs of the industry could therefore not be determined to any degree of accuracy. It seems that good progress is being made with the development of capital-intensive forms of technology aimed at coping with rapidly rising working costs and other effects of increasing depth. Techniques are also being developed to improve rock-cutting procedures and to eliminate the use of explosives in order to introduce a continuous mining process. On the whole, the gold-mining industry seems to be more sensitive to general inflationary pressures than to the cost effects that are associated with depth, temperature, and water quantities pumped. Greater control is possible over physical environmental factors such as the grade of ore mined, temperature, rate and nature of development of a mine, and adaptation of the daily working cycle to a continuous mining process. Wolfe and others hold the view that the industry will lose control over labour costs as a result of the 'sharp increase in wages and the growth of Black trade unions. However, the use of more capital-intensive technology will allow the industry to reduce its labour force, and a smaller, better-trained, and more permanent labour force will enable the industry to cope with the increasingly difficult physical environment and higher wages.

Threshold blasting involves the use of small amounts of high explosive to break and fragment hard rock without having to evacuate mining personnel. The method is easily assimilated and effective in rockbreaking, but requires rigid control on drilling, charging and timing. Current underground trials are aimed at fine-tuning the amount of explosive energy and blast hole geometry to allow the firing of multiple sets of shot holes in a continuous manner. Through correct procedures, the after-blast fumes, dust and fly rock can be contained so as to provide a safe working environment. Threshold blasting hugely reduces the volumes of explosives used in mining and brings to maturity the potential of the process begun by Alfred Nobel when he introduced nitroglycerine, and later dynamite, to mining. Its key contribution is its enabling of continuous mining operations with well understood and relatively low cost technologies. The use of batch blasting, employing large burdens holds the greatest potential for delivering high flow rates of ore at minimal cost. There is good potential for rapid evolution of the concept.

The lift system is the main part in manganese nodule mining on the ocean bed. It connects the nodule collection system (miner) with the surface platform (mining vessel) and transports the nodules from the ocean bed to the surface. China started the research on lift technology in deep ocean mining in 1991, and a slurry pump hydraulic lift method has been developed for the nodule mining system. The detailed slurry pump hydraulic lift experiments have been undertaken with crushed nodules in the vertical pipe. The lift parameters to lift coarse particles in the lift pipeline have been discussed, including the pressure drop, the solid concentration, and the mixture velocity. The author of this paper not only took part in all these studies on the lifting technology, but was also responsible for some of this research. This paper will present the component parts of the lift system and the research results of coarse particle mixture flow in the vertical lift pipeline. This fascinating paper deserves study by all who are interested in the economics of gold production. The argument in the paper that price is determined by the balance between supply and demand may be thought to be obvious. However, correlation analysis presumes causality, and there is some evidence in the paper to suggest that causality is absent in this market.

This paper describes the flotation of cassiterite from fine slimes at Rooiberg Tin Limited, and gives an of the Amdel on-line analysis system that was instaled in 1984 to aid in the control of the concentrate The system, which is easy to install and maintain, and which uses X-ray-fluorescence analysis, has improved control, and therefore a better recovery of tin.

A back-propagation model, which is typical of the models used in the science of artificial neural networks, was applied to the prediction of gossans from the southeast area of Habei Province in China. A success rate of 100 per cent was achieved. The results show that the neural-network approach is good, and that it can be used effectively in the prediction of multi metallic deposits.

CONTRIBUTION BYP.J.D.LLOYD The thought-provoking paper by Monro deserves serious consideration. If he is correct, the practice of selling gold forward should cease forthwith. However, similar arguments may well be advanced against the selling forward of many other commodities, and this runs counter to the success of futures markets worldwide. If, indeed, the practice were basically flawed, then such markets should long since have failed.

Operations of the strip mine at Arnot Colliery are described, and the improved volumetric extraction of the in situ coal reserves that has been obtained by the application of strip-mining techniques is highlighted. This article reviews the recruiting activities of the South African minerals industry over the past decade, and discusses some of the programmes that are in operation at the moment, particularly those aimed at potential graduates.
