[In previous contributions** the writer has called attention to important relations that faulting bears to the migration and accumulation of oil end gas. It has been pointed that favorably situated parts of oil and gas bearing, sands have been enriched by migration art segregation incident to faulting. The escape of water through natural passages such. as fault fissures has induced wide spread hydraulic currents through the beds toward these, points, of diminished pressure and these water currents, plus buoyancy hove contributed largely toward the migration of oil to favorable rock entrapments in the vicinity of the faults.*** The propulsive force of expanding gas has been one of the contributing causes for the hydraulic currents. Paradoxical as it may seem, the escape of gas with entrained oil through fissures has been on important factor In the migration, and accumulation of oil in many faulted areas. Compressed gas is the propulsive force by which oil generally moves to producing wells. It is also one of the propulsive forces by which oil has moved with or even ahead of water under conditions: of differential pressure brought about by faulting.]

This Bureau of Mines report provides the enthalpies of formation of cupric bromide and cuprous bromide as determined by hydrochloric and hydro-bromic acid solution calorimetry. At 298.15 K, the values are -33.10 ± 0.4 kcal/mole for CuBr2, and -25.24 ± 0.25 kcal/mole for CuBr.

The authors hypothesize that excavation-induced extension fractures are caused by elastic shearing displacement that in turn causes tension oblique to a propagating shear zone. Such extension is manifested as tension on scales larger than that of microcracks. En echelon fracture patterns are a common result. FLAC modeling confirmed that localized tension is created near the corners of mine openings. In the model, tension was concentrated at the leading edge of a simulated fracture in a pattern that could promote the formation of an en echelon fracture. Particle Flow Code models confirm progressive formation of en echelon tensile failures with distance from an opening. The elastic displacements and the resulting fractures facilitate reduction in applied load at the expense of shear deformation and lateral dilation. Understanding the mechanics of fracture and deformation is vital for designing more effective ground support practices, a major objective of ground control research being conducted at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

Researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health installed 39instrumented, fully grouted bolts at six test sites in a trona mine retreat panel to study mine roof stability for the improvement of workplace safety. Variables at each test site included bolt spacing, bolt length, roof span, and location in the panel layout. At most test sites, two rows of instrumented bolts were installed, one in or near the intersection created during development and the other in or near the intersection created during second-pass mining. The most significant factor affecting bolt load was roof span. The highest loads were on the bolts installed in the intersections of the 6-m-wide entry. Mining-induced stress resulting from panel layout was the next most significant factor affecting bolt loading. Minor variations in bolt loading could be attributed to changes in bolt spacing and bolt length. Gas pressure release in the immediate roof contributed to some bolts showing compressional loading during gas bleed-off.

Researchers at the U. S. Bureau of Mines conducted investigations to evaluate the potential for ground water contamination by mine waste used as backfill. Samples of cemented waste backfill and water discharging from drillholes and seeps were collected to use in chemical analyses and laboratory tests to determine the physical and chemical factors that control release of heavy metals to ground water. Greater water retention by cemented backfill (as compared to uncemented sandfill) reduces the surface are aexposed to oxidation, which in turn reduces the amount of acid produced. The acid is neutralized by the cement and minerals contained in the backfill. The grain-size distribution of tailings used for backfill affects the structural integrity of cemented backfill under attack by acidic water; breakdown of the backfill structure releases neutralizing materials faster. Backfilled stopes in rock with low hydraulic conductivities will constitute preferential flow paths after mine flooding; however, the rate of flow through backfill will be much slower than when the stope is partially saturated during mine operation. Considering all factors, acid generation and release of metal ions from cemented backfill should be less than in uncemented sandfill.

This report has presented a literature review of explosion proof¬ing of coal mine electrical equipment. The international "state-of¬the-art" is an extremely difficult definition to quantify but, from the preceding paragraphs, it is evident the international community be¬lieves that it is represented by the International Electrotechnical Commission's Publications. Five questions were set forth during the beginning of this report. Each will be evaluated in light of the preceding discussion. 1. Can Schedule 2G specifications on explosion-proof containers be substantiated? Literature was found in the three main problem areas, surface temperature, mechanical strength, and explosion transmission, to determine this. Surface temperature requirements are adequate except for equipment that can normally overload, and the required intern¬al pressure does afford some margin of safety. However, in terms of safety, gap dimensions are about ten times smaller than that needed. 2. Is it possible to replace the Schedule's design requirements with performance specifications? Two primary areas were determined as mechanical strength and explosion transmission. As was mentioned, for present flange and gap standards, the 150 psig requirement is adequate. Furthermore, it is the authors' opinion that the level cannot be re¬duced if the present gap requirements are retained. The Schedule now requires that 16 tests be run, but the literature suggests that only from three to six examinations are necessary. The Mine Safety and Health Administration. Department of Labor, requires coal mine operators to measure compliance with federal re¬spirable dust exposure standards periodically using approved gravi¬metric samplers. However, the gravimetric approach, with its inher¬ent delays, cannot provide dust concentration data quickly enough to allow on-site correction of inadequate dust control strategies or re¬moval of personnel from harmful environments. Furthermore, alleged tampering with dust samples collected to determine compliance with standards prompted the Secretary of Labor to appoint a special Respirable Dust Task Group to study options to improve monitoring and control of respirable coal mine dust. The Mine Safety and Health Administration's Task Group recommended that the U.S. Bureau of Mines develop a fixed-site monitor that would provide continuous information to the mine worker and mine operator regarding dust levels and the status of compliance with the applicable respirable dust standard. In response to the Mine Safety and Health Administration's request, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating several sensor tech¬nologies for continuously monitoring respirable coal mine dust. One of these technologies is the Rupprecht and Patashnick Co. tapered element, oscillating microbalance. The bureau is in the process of investigating the suitability of using this sensor in the high humidity and vibration environment of underground coal mines. Laboratory tests have indicated that, with modification, the sensor can meet the humidity and vibration requirements for underground coal mine use. Currently, the bureau is developing

This study is intended to serve three roles. First, it represents a global overview and summary to supplement and complement the five regional companion volumes of the 1991 edition of the Minerals Yearbook International Review. In this regard, it also extends previous time series under this title that appeared as the introductory chapter to the international volume of the Minerals Yearbook from the inception of that volume in 1963 until it was subdivided into separate regional volumes in 1989. The basic statistical presentations herein generally contain data through and including that for 1991, although in a few instances the most recent statistics are those for earlier years because more recent, comprehensive global statistics simply are not yet available owing to delays in data collection and processing in some countries and continued governmental suppression of data in others. The second role of this study is to provide an update to the coverage of events impacting the world's mineral industry that have occurred between the end of 1991 and the preparation of this study. Inclusion of this update is almost essential because of the potential effect of some of these events on global mineral industry activities.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has continued the research role of the former US Bureau of Mines (USBM) to engineer techniques that will reduce the hazards in the mining workplace associated with coal bumps. Recent research focused on a longwall coal mine in Utah with overburden greater than 750 m (2,500 ft) containing several massive sandstone units. The primary field instrumentation at the site was three-dimensional, full waveform, autonomous microseismic arrays placed underground and on the surface in order to surround the active multi-panel longwall district. The purpose of these arrays was to help investigate the strata mechanics associated with the redistribution of stress and the associated gob formation of the longwall. Specifically, the seismic arrays were used to determine the timing and location of the failure in the strata surrounding the active mining. Overall 13,000 seismic events were detected and located with on-site processing during the five months the panel was being mined, including a magnitude (ML) 4.2 event. Of these, a smaller subset of 5,000 well-located events was selected during post-processing to form a consistent data set for analysis in this paper. From this data set, it was observed that the seismic events generally occurred in advance of the longwall face, both above and below the panel, consistent with failure of the strata in the forward stress abutment zone. Also, the occurrence of the ML 4.2 seismic event within 150-180 m (500-600 ft) of a deep cover longwall face with no associated bump caused a re-evaluation of the nature of the connection between seismic activity and coal bumps.

As part of the Bureau of Mines program to broaden utilization of abundant low-quality mineral materials, the Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Laboratory conducted beneficiation studies on two Alabama clays. The main purpose of these studies was to develop improved plasticity and green strength in both clays and compare these improved properties with those of a typical ball clay. Whiteness of the clays was also considered. The results indicated that by adjusting the pH of the kaolin to approximately 9, a substitute for ball clay could be obtained. The investigation also showed that by a combination of attrition grinding and sodium dithionite leaching to remove iron, the underclay could be upgraded to a ball clay material.

Metal production rates of 42 to 45 tons per day were obtained with hollow-core anthracite briquets in an experimental blast furnace. Tuyere pressures were about the same for both coke and briquet operations, but from 150 to 175 pounds more of briquets were required per ton of metal than were needed with coke. Furnace operations were comparatively smooth, furnace hanging occurring less often than in previous tests with anthracite briquets. Dust production was substantially higher than with coke, however, and metal quality could not be controlled by corrective burdening and moisture control.

To improve a miner's chance of survival during an emergency by providing immediately avail-able breathable air and protection from toxic gases until a longer-duration breathing apparatus, stored nearby, can be reached. Approach: A belt-carried apparatus which can provide a closed-circuit atmosphere for ten minutes breathing has been developed under a Bureau of Mines contract. How It Works: Water vapor and carbon dioxide in the user's exhaled breath are removed, and oxygen is supplied, by chemical reactions. When the user exhales into the mouthpiece, water vapor in his breath reacts with potassium superoxide (KO2) stored In the canister to produce oxygen. The other product of this reaction (KOH) reacts with carbon dioxide and removes it from the air. The oxygen-enriched air then flows from the canister into two breathing bags. When user inhales through the mouth, that air is drawn out of the bags, makes a second pass through the chemical-containing canister, and flows into the mouthpiece tube. A nose clip is worn to seal off the nasal passages.

To reduce needless paging of persons by all phones in a mine or mill, while retaining all-location page capability. Approach Standard pager phones of any manufacturer are modified to include the option of selective calling and message holding. How It Works All commercial mine pager phones presently rely upon voice paging via a loud-speaker. When a page is initiated, every phone in the system broadcasts the audible voice page, even phones in locations where the desired person could not possibly be. The advantage of this scheme is that whole-mine paging occurs. The disadvantage is that persons soon begin ignoring pages because they occur all the time, and most are for someone else. Also, it requires considerable battery power from all phones making it necessary to change batteries very frequently, even in phone locations where personnel rarely go. In addition, if a voice page is made and not heard, there Is no way to leave the message. Therefore, persons who at a later time come near a phone, have no way of knowing a page was made and was not acknowledged. This results in situations that often have a direct bearing on safety and productivity.

The series summarizing the prices of the major nonferrous metals on the stock exchanges of the United States and the United Kingdom has been continued this year in tables 23 and 24. As a result of the lack of availability of comprehensive data on the prices of metals in Canada, the table that had presented that information in past years in this chapter has been discontinued and the price series for nickel that had been in that table now appears in the table presenting metal prices in the United States.

Measure the daily exposure of individual miners to alpha particles emitted by radon daughters (radioactive decay products of the radon gas present in the mine atmosphere). Approach A dosimeter worn by a miner counts alpha particle emissions from radon daughters, RaA (Polonium 218) and RaC (Polonium 214), collected on a filter, and stores the gross count for later readout. How It Works A pump draws air into the detector assembly where radon daughters are collected on a filter. The detector, a solid state surface barrier type, is mounted in the filter head behind a thin mylar disc which serves as a moisture barrier. When a radon daughter decays and its alpha emission strikes the detector, the alpha particle causes a pulse of electrical charge in the detector. The circuits used to condition and count the electrical pulses generated in the detector are represented by the other blocks shown in the simplified block diagram. Each pulse is first amplified.

Reduce injury to people or damage to equipment when a scheduled production blast is detonated. Approach The essential elements of an effective blast area security system were identified through case studies of five mining operations where the blast area guarding practices were considered to be superior to those generally found in the industry. These elements were used in making recommendations for improved blast area safeguarding practices. Background The blast area security system is a means by which the mine operator prevents injury to people or damage to equipment when blasting is performed. Analysis of blasting accidents showed that most blasting accidents occur during scheduled blasting and are due to inadequate blast-site security. Factors contributing to the system's breakdown are failure to clear the blast zone, inadequate guarding. and failure of personnel to follow instructions, retreat to a safe location, and/or take adequate cover. Mine personnel, visitors and even trespassers can inadvertently wander into a blasting zone unless proper procedures exist to ensure that all personnel are cleared from the blast zone and kept safely away until after blasting IS completed. Statistics show that the blaster is the miner most frequently injured In these accidents.

"INTRODUCTION During September 1944, the Bureau of Mines undertook a program of investigation and limited exploratory drilling at the Last Chance mine, near the village of Arthur in Grant County, Wisconsin, as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin when every effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the Nation's war program.The Bureau's attention was directed, to the Last Chance mine when the operators discovered high percentages of zinc in an exploratory churn drill hole a short distance southeast of the mine. The ore was found in the Trenton Limestone, which underlies the ore horizon then being mined. To determine whether this discovery was important, and to demonstrate the possible extension of the ore the Bureau of Mines drilled five additional holes in the vicinity of the discovery.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Nines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This book has employed miners' narratives to illustrate basic concepts about the escape process. One of the most powerful means by which people make sense of their experiences is through the telling and internalization of stories [Bruner 1990]. By couching one's own and others' motives and actions in terms of a coherent narrative, a person is able to learn from mistakes and plan future behaviors that may help ensure survival. A growing body of research suggests that decision-making skills used to deal with emergency situations can be taught and assessed by simulations based on narratives from the real world [Bransford et al. 1986; Brecke 1982; Brener 1984; Connolly et al. 1989; Halff et al. 1986; Jones and Keith 1983; Lacefield and Cole 1986]. Such techniques have been used to address the decision-making of medical personnel, civil and military flight crews, and even people involved in broader life events such as political and military situations [Babbott and Halter 1983; Dugdale et al. 1982; Farrand et al. 1982; Gilbert 1975; McGuire 1985; McGuire et al. 1976; Flathers et al. 1982; Giffin and Rockwell 1984; Jensen 1982; Janis and Mann 1987]. Given the validity of this method of study and the promise it holds for helping people improve the quality of their responses to nonroutine occurrences, it is perhaps surprising that there have been no studies of emergency decision-making among blue-collar workers prior to those conducted by the present authors and their colleagues. The purpose of this chapter is to describe underground coal miners' decision-making performance on a table-top simulation whose problem structure is derived from interviews with a group of eight miners who escaped from the 5 Left section at Brownfield Mine. The exercise was constructed by a panel of domain experts (mine safety and rescue personnel) with the assistance of an educational psychologist. The simulation includes actual predicaments with wise and unwise decision alternatives that, in the opinion of these domain experts, are characteristic of such escapes. Results reported in this chapter are the scores of a sample of experienced mine workers who completed the simulation. Because the exercise is a series of objective performance tasks coupled with detailed and immediate feedback, this simulation can be used to teach and refresh critical escape skills, as well as to provide data concerning the proficiency of miners at the time of exercise administration.
