As part of its program to help decrease the dependency of the United States on foreign imports of nonfuel minerals and to devise technology for the efficient and economic use of domestic resources, the Bureau of Mines smelted and sulfation-leached an ilmenite from northern Minnesota. The objective was to assess the feasibility of preparing chlorination-grade titanium feedstock. The concentrate was smelted with woodchips, coke, and soda ash in 91-kg-and 1-metric ton (mt)-capacity electric arc furnaces to form Ti-rich slag and commercial-grade pig iron. The slag contained from 67 to 77 wt pct titanium oxides and from 1.8 to 7.2 wt pct iron. Sulfation occurred in a 4.5-kg/h moving-bed reactor using S02-air mixtures at temperatures of 8000 to 8500 C to form soluble salts of the Ca, Mg, Mn,and Na impurities, which cause plugging of fluidized-bed chlorinators. Subsequently, the sulfated slag was leached in acid to remove the soluble sulfates. The final product from small-scale testing contained up to 95.5 wt pct Ti02, a minimum of 0.6 wt pct Fe, and a minimum total of 0.3 wt pct of the four impurities of interest. The final product meets charge specifications for chlorination. However, more large-scale testing is necessary.

A kinetic model was developed to describe the production of superoxide (02) by single pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM). Model predictions were compared to experimental results obtained from single rat PAM. The O2 - was quantified by measuring the reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate (NBTH2) from video-recorded images of individual cells. The kinetic model considered three reactions: (1) the production of extracellular 0 - from the reduction of oxygen by NADPH oxidase using intracellular NADPH as the substrate, (2) the subsequent dismutation of o2- to from O2 , and (3) the reaction of o2- and NBT. NBT specificity for o2- was analyzed by comparing results in the presence and absence of superoxide dismutase (SOD) which catalyzes the dismutation of o2- to H2o2. Measured PAM heterogeneity was accounted for by varying the concentration of intracellular NADPH, its rate of depletion, and the concentration of intracellular NADPH oxidase in the kinetic model. Model predictions compared favorably with experimental results except when SOD was present. This discrepancy may be due to diffusional limitations since NBT is a relatively small molecule (818 MW) compared to SOD (34000 MW). In addition, the cell surface is both ruffled and negatively charged, which may introduce steric hindrances and/or electrostatic effects since SOD is also negatively charged.

1. Summary This investigation is concerned with description of the loading function at the underground coal face, and the identification of varia¬bles - geological, geometric, mechanical, and operational - that affect the loading function. The immediate objective of this work was to provide information for operations-research studies as applied to underground coal mining, and the broad objective was to provide guide¬lines for planning and equipment selection in underground coal mining. The loading function was expressed as -a statistically-developed linear mathematical model. Originally, fifteen independent variables were considered which potentially could have influenced the loading function. These variables were constructed on the basis of measurable or estima¬ble geometric and geological properties at the working face, mechanical characteristics of the mining machine, and certain operational proce¬dures of mining. The original model explained 64.0 percent of the experimental variation. The final condensed model explained 54.1 percent of the experimental variation in terms of only five indepen¬dent variables, namely: 1. Ratio: width of cut/total width of cutter 2. Ratio: height of cut/diameter of cutter 3. Total horsepower of cutter-drive motors 4. Rotation speed (RPM) of cutter 5,. A subjective estimate of machine quality and operator skill Certain limitations were found to exist in the evaluation of the variables. Principle among these limitations was the impossibility of precise measurement of tonnage loaded in certain instances.

This paper, which describes mining methods and costs at the Kearney zinc-lead mine, is one of a series being prepared by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in varicus mining districts of the United States. The Kearney mine, which is owned by the New Mexico Consolidated Mining Co., a subsidiary of the Peru Mining Co. (Illinois Zinc), is situated a few miles southeast of the town of Hanover, in the northwest corner of sec. 27, T. 17 S., R. 12 W., in the Central Mining District, Grant County, N. Mex. (Figs. 1 and 2.) This report presents a brief history of the district, describes the geology, and outlines methods of prospecting and exploration, including eampling and estimation of tonnages and values. Development and mining methods are explained, and transportation, ventilation, drainage, safety measures, and organizatich are described. The wage scale and mining costs comprise the concluding sections of the report.

"INTRODUCTION This report is another of the series on the effect of drouth and low water on the pollution of streams by coalmine drainage. A previous report3 dealt with work on Bennett Branch of Sinnanahoning Creek, Pa. This report deals with the results obtained during a similar study of Black Lick Creek, Two Lick Creek, and Yellow Creek. All of these belong to the same drainage system. Two Lick Creek is a tributary to Black Lick Creek, and in turn Yellow Creek is a tributary to Two Lick Creek, as shown in Figure 1.Black Lick Creek was of such a volume that a seasonal investigation was not entirely feasible. Yellow Creek was found to have mines only near the mouth, except a few of status unknown to the writer at the extreme head-waters, and the stream was also more or less inaccessible for regular and frequent sampling. There are no active mines in the Mt. Eddy RARE II area. Chromite, gold, and stone prospects were examined. The RARE II area contains no identified mineral resources; however, a sample of a 260 ton occurrence contained 38.1 percent chromium oxide (Cr203) at the Ratero Prospect (fig. 1, no. 3), which has low potential for chromium resources. The Johnson Mine (fig. 1, no. 6) produced a small unrecorded amount of chromite during World War IT, but only a low potential exists for chromium resources. A low potential exists for gold resources at the Half Century Prospect (fig. 1, no. 2). At a borrow pit northwest of the study area (fig. 1, no. 1), sheared serpentinite is quarried for road metal; similar rock occurs in the RARE II area, but better material is more readily available elsewhere. Sand and gravel occurrences are too inaccessible and distant from markets to be considered resources. Mineral fuels and geothermal resources were not evaluated during this Bureau of Mines study. There currently are three unpatented lode mining claims in the study area. INTRODUCTION The Mt. Eddy RARE II area is 7 air-mi west of Mt. Shasta City, California, and straddles the Siskiyou-Trinity county line. The roadless area includes 7,200 acres of rugged, glacially carved, ridges and drainages which comprise Mt. Eddy. Elevations vary from 6,000 ft along the North Fork Sacramento River to 9,025 ft at the summit of Mt. Eddy. The area is covered with conifer forest below 8,000 ft elevation.

The Bureau of Mines conducted flotation tests on a mixture of barite waste materials from Nevada in which essentially all of the barite values were finer than 20 micrometers. Flotation variables investigated in these tests were the effects of (1) sodium silicate as a pulp dispersant, (2) sodium hydroxide as a pH modifier, (3) increased amounts of sodium cetyl sulfate, (4) conditioning time and (5) solids content during conditioning. The optimum flotation conditions were achieved by adding 2.5 pounds of sodium silicate and 10 pounds of sodium cetyl sulfate per ton of feed and conditioning the pulp for 20 minutes at a 35-percent solids content. Using these conditions, a concentrate was produced that contained 94.7 percent BaS04, with an attendant recovery of 90.9 percent of the barite in the feed. In addition to the flotation tests, a selective barite flocculation process was developed to treat extremely fine barite. A barite concentrate containing 96.5 percent BaS04 with an attendant recovery of 82.1 percent of the barite was produced by selective flocculation. A process patent application has been filed based on this process.

Improve underground long-hole drilling efficiency and safety by developing a lightweight, easily transportable drilling pust that can be adjusted to fit a range of mine opening heights. Background Standard one-piece commercially available steel posts weigh approximately 10 pounds per foot. Transporting these posts underground and carrying them over obstacles and through small mine doors is very difficult. Because the length of a one-piece post cannot be adjusted, variations in mine opening height at the drilling site must be accommodated. This is accomplished by stacking several wooden blocks to form a base for the post, resulting in a dangerously unstable drilling setup. The only alternative to this unstable setup is to obtain a longer post. There problems can be reduced by the use of a two-piece telescoping aluminum post having a 3-foot adjustment range in 6-inch increments. The two-piece extendable post will be easy to transport and carry underground. It will fit any opening height within its adjustment range. One large wooden block is used as a base and one cap block is used at the top to bear against the mine roof. This arrangement results in a stable, rigid setup.

"An investigation has been made of the applicability to a variety of coals, other than those from Illinois, of the Powell and Parr method of analysis for the forms of sulphur in coal.A complete study was made of the sulphur in the following coals:- Upper Freeport, Pa.; Pittsburgh seam, Pa.; Pocahontas No. 3, W, Va..; Letcher Co., Ky.; Morgan Co., Tenn.; and Cherokee Co., Kan.The method of analysis gave excellent results when applied to these coals. In the determination of pyrite, the iron-sulphur ratio checked in every case with the theoretical. After the extraction of the pyrite and sulphates, the remaining sulphur was proved to be organic in nature.This work indicated that sulphur exists in coal in three typical forms: - pyrite or marcasite, sulphates, and organic sulphur. A study of the changes which these forms undergo during coking has been made on a variety of coals, and the following five classes of reactions established.First. Complete decomposition of the pyrite and marcasite to ferrous sulphide, pyrrhotite, and hydrogen sulphide. This reaction begins at 300°C., is complete at 600 °C., and generally reaches its maximum between 400 and 500°C."

The bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory scale investigation of the process of selective flocculation with the objective of developing a method to effect separations on suspensions consisting predominately of ultra-fine-size (minus 400-mesh) particles of coal and refuse. Selective flocculation of coal from coal-refuse slurries could be achieved with a wide variety of reagents. Typically as much as 15 to 20 weight-percent of high-ash solids (70 to 80 percent ash) could be retained in suspension. The flocculated sediment remained a high-ash product, however, and would require further treatment to be regarded as clean coal. No combination of reagents and conditions led to selective flocculation of the refuse component. The dispersing agent was found to be the critical factor; dosages of 3 to 8 lb/ton2 were necessary to stabilize the suspension for subsequent selective flocculation. In addition, most of the dispersants that worked were most effective at substantially elevated pH (11 or so). It was concluded that this process would be prohibitively expensive and, because of yield and quality constraints, it would be of questionable utility in today's coal preparation industry.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Congress are presently considering several approaches aimed at reducing the amount of lead in the environment and society's exposure to lead. One approach is to tax domestic primary lead production or consumption. Objective To assist the Congress and the EPA in their decisionmaking, a study was initiated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, which assesses the minerals related implications of a tax on U.S. primary lead production and primary lead imports. This investigation analyzes the impacts of a primary lead lax on: (1) domestic primary lead production, (2) domestic lead coproduct and byproduct production (including bismuth, cadmium, germanium, indium, silver, and zinc production), (3) domestic secondary lead production, (4) lead imports, (5) domestic lead recycling activity, and (6) the U.S. lead price. Study Findings Domestic Primary Lead and Primary Lead Coproduct and Byproduct Production. A quantitative analysis based on the application of the Bureau's Supply Availability System (SAM) has been conducted to determine the impacts on domestic primary lead and primary lead coproduct and byproduct production from domestic lead source material for a range of taxes.

Research was conducted to develop operating techniques and define some of the limiting parameters for microbially converting hydrous calcium sulfate to hydrogen sulfide. The work was carried out in either glass stoppered flasks or anaerobic fermentors. Using the criteria of pH, temperature, number of bacteria per milliliter of test solution, and hydrogen sulfide produced, it was shown that hydrous calcium sulfate could be microbially converted to hydrogen sulfide at a rate of 7.3 g H2S/1 of fermentor volume per 24 hours. The various parameters defined were pH, temperature, and medium exchange rate. These were shown to be a pH range of 7.2 to 8.8, a temperature range of 30° to 35° C, and a medium exchange rate of 70 percent of the ferment or volume per 24 hours. It was also shown that a daily waste was between 50 and 77 percent as effective as sodium lactate in supporting the production of hydrogen sulfide and that by utilizing a gas to purge the fermentation system, a 1.7-fold increase in hydrogen sulfide was obtained.

Sudden, violent failures of rock around mine openings influence access, ventilation, and safety in both hard-rock and coal mines. To develop predictive tools for assessing the potential for violent failure, the authors initiated a comprehensive study using (1) multiple linear regression and numerical modeling analyses of geological and mining conditions at 25 sites to identify the most significant factors contributing to stress bumps in coal mines and (2) investigations of the geological and mining factors contributing to rock bursts in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho, particularly the influence of preexisting structures on rock bursts. Twenty-five factors were initially considered in the study of coal bumps. The most important variables were identified as (1) mechanical properties of strata, (2) gate road geometry and/or gate pillar factors of safety, (3) roof beam thickness, joint spacing, and stiffness characteristics, and (4) stress gradients associated with previous mining and anomalous geologic conditions. In the Coeur d'Alene district, burst damage related to preexisting structures results primarily from (1) sudden buckling and crushing of rock layers where surfaces of development and production openings lie at low angles to bedding, faults, or other planar structures and (2) disturbance of loose ground caused by seismic fault-slip on preexisting faults or previously sheared bedding planes that intersect veins near pillar-stope margins.

This paper presents experimental results for conveyor belt flame spread from tests conducted in a small-scale tunnel. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of belt type, ventilation velocity, belt surface-to-roof distance and ignition source power on the flame spread properties. The tunnel used was 4.9 m long by 0.46 m square with the ventilation velocity ranging from 0.7 to 3.2 m/s. The ignition source was an impinged methane jet burner with heat output ranging from 7 to 21 kW. The belts tested included non-fire resistant rubber belts, fire-resistant rubber belts, fire-resistant neoprene belt and fire-resistant PVC belt with belt samples measuring 0.23 m wide by 2.5 m long. Experimental results show that with a ventilation velocity of 1.02 m/s all conveyor belts could be ignited, and that with sufficient ignition source power, flames spread the full length of the belt sample. The data showed a coupling effect of the ventilation air velocity and the belt surface-to-roof distance on the flame spread rate. For instance, flames could not spread with a ventilation velocity higher than 1.52 m/s and a surface-to-roof distance of 0.22 m. The use of the measured CO/CO2 ratio as an indicator of combustion stoichiometry is also discussed.

An important activity of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and industry . In connection with these activities , the Bureau determines the explosion hazards of combustible gases , liquids , and solids , and investigates means by which explosions may be eliminated or reduced in violence . The limits of inflammability and ignition temperatures of combustible gases , vapors , and solids are of practical importance because such materials can be manufactured , transported , and used with greater safety , provided the range of concentrations and temperatures that cause explosions are known. Acetic anhydride , ( CH3CO) 20 , with which this report is concerned , is a liquid at ordinary temperatures . It is used in the preparation of a number of organic chemicals and in the manufacture of photographic film and of artificial silk . It is perhaps the most important acetylating agent for industrial uses - a property that is especially important at this time because of its direct application in the manufacture of munitions . The sample tested was supplied by the Carbide & Carbon Chemicals Corporation . Its specific gravity was given as 1.083 at 20/20 . The vapor pressures , supplied by the manufacturer , are plotted in figure 1 .

Data on dust control practices, geology, and occupational exposures were gathered for approximately eighty underground continuous mining units. Despite silica contents in excess of 5%, nearly forty units successfully maintained silica concentrations at or below 100 µg/rn3 on a majority of occupational dust samples while the remainder had difficulty maintaining this level. These two sample sets were termed group A operations and group B operations, respectively. Analyses of productivities, geologies, and dust control parameters revealed only minor differences between these two groups. Subsequent analyses of face ventilation design showed considerable differences in silica exposure and silica content between group A and group B at the continuous mining machine and roof bolter operator occupations. These differences were minimal when using exhaust curtain ventilation with a dust scrubber', This face ventilation system may benefit operations having difficulty controlling silica dust exposure and silica dust content. Finally, the collected data showed that occupational samples from group B operations possessed generally higher silica exposures and silica content than similar samples from group A. The single head roof bolter (helper) possessed among the highest silica exposures and silica contents in both groups.

Seven degasification wells have been completed in the Pittsburgh coalbed at the new Emerald mine near Waynesburg, Pa. Funding was provided by the Bureau of Mines to perform stimulation treatments on five of the wells, to show that this is a feasible and economical means of degasifying part of a coalbed. The seven wells ranged in depth from 590 to 910 feet. Stimulation treatments used 25,260 to 42,660 gallons of foam and 7,400 to 12,800 pounds of 20/40-mesh prop sand. Pumping rates were 10.8 to 11.6 bbl/min and treating pressures were from 1,050 to 1,600 psig. On the day following stimulation, gas production ranged from a few hundred cubic feet per day to more than 100,000 cu ft/day.

Design a high-production coal mining machine with inherent low dust generation and low frictional ignition potential. Approach Constant depth linear cutting (CDLC) provides a longterm solution to excessive dust generation from shearers and continuous mining machines through new design of the rotary drum culling system. Problems with rotary drum systems, which must be eliminated to control the dust generation at the source, include the effect of a con¬stantly varying depth of cut using fixed bit spacing, secondary fragmentation of already broken coal and, frictional heating of bits and entrainment of dust by fanning action due to high drum rotational speed, Each bit on a rotary drum enters the coal face at zero depth of cut, goes to some maximum depth at the horizontal centerline during sump, and exits at zero depth.

"Introduction.Southern Illinois and Kentucky are credited with approximately 90% of the fluorspar production of the United States. A small amount of high-grade acid, spar is obtained from the ore by band sorting; the greater part, however, is recovered by jigs and tables as gravel spar containing approximately 85% calcium fluoride. In the jigging and tabling operations, galena is recovered, and enough silica and calcite are removed to raise the calcium fluoride content of the gravel spar to 85%. However, the removal of silica and calcite results in a large loss of spar. With increasing depth in the mines, zinc sulphide, sphalerite, is encountered in increasing quantity and the removal of this has become a serious problem. While the sphalerite can be fairly well removed from the spar by present milling methods, a marketable zinc concentrate can not be made. The experiments described below were made on fluorspar ore from Southern Illinois, by the mining experiment station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, at Rolla, Mo., in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy.The ore tested contained. 7.3% lead, 27.9% zinc, 35.7% calcium fluoride, 9.5% silica and 4.7%. calcite.Tests and Results. In some preliminary tests it was noticed that a portion of the finely crushed ore adhered strongly to the sample pans, and upon investigation it was found that the adhering material was practically clean spar. By utilizing this property of adhesion 46.8% of the spar was recovered as a product containing 98.3% calcium fluoride. This suggested the possibility of using electrostatic separation."

Improve the reliability and accuracy of subsurface images using constrained tomography with enhanced ray-tracing capabilities. Background Geophysical tomography is a technique for imaging the structure of a rock mass using seismic or radio waves, in the same way that medical CAT scans image human tissue using X-rays. Tomography has found numerous practical applications related to mining, including lithologic and structural characterization, fracture detection and fluid monitoring, void detection, and evaluation of stress state and integrity of mine structures. Problems Two fundamental problems have largely prevented geophysical tomography from enjoying the tremendous success achieved by medical tomography. The first is a consequence of practical limitations on the placement of sources and receivers of wave energy: ideal resolution can be attained only when the region being imaged is entirely surrounded by sources and receivers, so that it is crossed by rays traveling in all possible directions. When such coverage is impossible or impractical, the inversion becomes underdetermined: there id not enough information in the measured data to provide a mathematically unique solution. The second major problem in geophysical tomography is the necessity for detailed ray tracing. Commercial software, as well as previous U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) software, employs a ray-shooting algorithm that may be unable to model some ray paths when velocity contrasts are larger than about 100%. These ?shadow zones" result in loss of data and degradation of reconstructed images.
