This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report presents a concise review on sources, processes, supply, and historical use patterns of domestic cadmium. It also covers a preliminary estimated cadmium material flow for the year 1989. This preliminary study contains information on cadmium and cadmium-bearing products in the United States. The data in this report were obtained from both published and/or unpublished sources of information. However, in order to estimate the fate of cadmium in each operation or application stage, some assumptions, judgments, and correlations were made by the USBM in an attempt to determine the material flows losses.

This Bureau of Mines report tabulates methane emissions from U.S. bituminous coal mines with daily emission rates of at least 100,000 cfd according to States, counties, and coalbeds. Most of the methane emitted is from mines in the Appalachian States. Total daily emission in 1975 was 216.3 MMcfd, compared with 227.0 MMcfd in 1971 and 214.5 MMcfd in 1973. Thirty counties in nine States hid daily methane emissions of 1 MMcfd or more. These emitted 93 percent of the total methane. The highest emissions were from Monongalia County, W. Va., which accounted for 18.9 percent of the total. This was followed by Marion County, W. Va., 9.6 percent; Buchanan County, Va., 8.3 percent; Jefferson County, Ala., 6.1 percent; and Washington County, Pa., 5.9 percent. The Pittsburgh coalbed emitted 45.7 percent of the total methane, followed by the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed with 12.9 percent. The report lists 196 mines, of which 60 had daily methane emissions of 1 MMcfd or more. Included in this compilation are the identification and thickness of the coalbed, methane emission, coal production and ventilation rates, number of drifts, shafts, and slopes used for ventilation purposes, shaft depth, age of mine, and gas-to-coal ratio.

In support of Bureau of Mines studies of thermal fragmentation of rock, the elastic moduli of four types of rock were measured at temperatures ranging from room temperature up to 1,500° F (1,089° K). The sonic method was employed to determine the resonant frequencies of the rock specimens and from these frequencies, the elastic moduli were calculated. Data for Young's modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio are given as a function of temperature for Dresser basalt, Reserve taconite, Jasper quartzite, and Charcoal granite. Young's modulus and the shear modulus decreased with increasing temperature up to about 1,200° F and then became relatively insensitive to temperatures from 1,200° to 1,500° F.

The energies of combustion of two carbides of tungsten and two carbides of molybdenum were measured , and the corresponding standard heats of combustion were derived . The results are as follows : WC : AH298.15 ( combustion ) = -285,940 ± 250 cal /mole , W₂ C: AH298.15 (combustion ) = -490,660 ± 400 cal /mole , Mo₂ C : AH298.15 ( combustion) = -439,350 ± 600 cal /mole , MoC : AH298.15 ( combustion ) = -269,800 ± 1,000 cal /mole . The combustion heats were combined with the heats of formation of the corresponding metal trioxides and carbon dioxide to obtain the following heats of formation : WC : AH298.15 ( formation ) = -9.6 ± 0.4 kcal /mole , WC: AH298.15 ( formation ) = -6.3 ± 0.6 kcal /mole , Mo₂ C : AH298.15 (formation) = -11.0 ± 0.7 kcal / mole , MoC : AH298.15 (formation ) = -2.4 ± 1.0 kcal /mole . The heats of combustion and formation of MoC are tentative .

The Federal Bureau of mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted exploratory investigations and geologic mapping in the Wishbone Hill district of the Matanuska coalfield almost continuously from 1942 through 1958. These investigations delineated reserves of high-volatile bituminous coal necessary to supply the rapidly expanding military and civilian requirements in the Anchorage area. This report describes the program conducted by the Bureau of Mines from 1949 through 1958, and briefly summarizes previous investigations, the results of which have already been published. The coal-bearing structure on both the north and south limbs of the prominent Wishbone Hill syncline was explored by 8,719 feet of churn drilling and 25,460 feet of diamond-core drilling. A total of 33 holes were drilled ranging in depth from 60 to 2,114 feet. To supplement the drilling operations, bulldozer and dragline trenching were undertaken at key locations; about 25,000 cubic yards of dragline trench were excavated in the vicinity of the old Premier mine.

[The beau of Mines made its first survey of motor gasolines sold throughout the United States in 1915, a second in 1917, and a third in April. 1919. These surveys shored that motor gasoline had become notably less volatile during each two-year interval. In order to ascertain whether this change was continuing, it was planned to institute semi-annual surveys, the first of which teas made in January, 1920. Contrary to expectations based on the previous surveys, the average volatility of the gasoline tested at this time was practically identical with that of the average volatility of the gasoline from the same districts in 1919. The next survey, made in July, 1920, showed a very marked decrease in volatility but as it has long been recognized that the volatility of motor gasoline manufactured for sale during the summer months is loss tan that of gasoline made and sold during the winter, part at least of the change was attributed to this factor. The average boiling point of the samples collected in the present survey is 263 degrees Fahrenheit, as compared with 264 a year ago. This shows that the average gasoline marketed at the present time is fully as volatile as that marketed a year ago. There has been, however, a noticeable change in the character of the product: the initial boiling point and 20 per cant point are lower than a year ago, whereas the 90 per cent and end-points are higher, which indicates a greater proportion of gasolines made by blending casing-head, or natural gas-gasoline, and naphtha.]

"Interest in the fine structure of soots and carbon blacks is motivated by a variety of possible applications. The structure provides information on the origins of the particles and on their adsorptive and reactive properties. This paper describes a method for quantification of the structure of soots and carbon blacks based on direct electron microscopic observation followed by image analysis of these materials. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) provides a very detailed observation of particle structure. The differences in soot structure, because of its complexity, may not be easily quantifiable with the human eye; therefore, high-level computer software has been used to manipulate HRTEM images. This technique involves the application of fast Fourier transforms (FFT) to single particles and the measurement of characteristic parameters such as interplanar spacings and crystallite sizes from these particles. The methodology and application of this characterization technique are presented here. Results are shown for dif¬ferent samples obtained from soot and carbon black particles selected to illustrate the capabilities of the methodology. Quantitative information can be obtained on structural characteristics, e.g., interplanar spacing, circularity, orientation, elongation, and length distribution of lattice fringes, as well as on the fractional coverage of the extracted pattern. c 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.This paper presents a combination of techniques for recognizing and classifying different carbonaceous materials, using their structural morphology. A new method to assess and quantify the parameters which define such structures is proposed and discussed. The technique is based on the use of HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and computational image analysis.It is well-known that carbonaceous materials like graphite, soots, coals, cokes, chars, etc. possess characteristic structural appearances which can vary from mostly random or amorphous to a perfectly ordered graphitic crystalline structure (Buseck and Bo-Jun, 1985; Buseck et al., 1987). The carbon structure has been variously described as turbostratic (Oberlin, 1989) or as crumpled sheets (Rouzaud et al., 1991) to indicate that parallel layering, reminiscent of graphite, is observed over dimensions of nanometers, but that these planes or crystallites show disorder over larger scales. The degree of order of such structures is strongly dependent on the thermal treatment of the material as well as on the composition of the source of the carbonaceous material. The value of the electron microscope in studying the morphology of such materials has been well-established, and abundant information is available (Ishiguro et al., 1991; Lahaye and Prado, 1978; Buseck, 1992).The use of HRTEM has brought further insight into this matter. Qualitative assessment of the structural order of such materials has been attempted over a long period of time in order to differentiate between various sources or treatments. There is, to date, no successful method available for quantifying the structural characteristics of various carbonaceous materials. This paper presents a technique which is able to recognize dif-ferent materials and to quantify the structural parameters of those materials using HRTEM and computational image analysis, including pattern recognition techniques.In the case of perfectly ordered graphitic crystals, electron diffraction is widely used for obtaining details on structure. Analysis of diffraction patterns can reveal parameters such as interplanar spacing, d002, crystallite size along the c-axis, Lc, crystal size in the plane of the layers, L., mean number of crystallites, Nc, etc.Complicated electron microscopy methods such as defocusing, tilted illumination, axial illumination, etc., often have to be used in order to characterize complex materials such as randomly oriented crystals in soots and carbons. Deposits of talc are known in many districts in Canada but at the present time active mining operations are reported only in Ontario . Here three companies are now operating, two of which, George H. Gillespie & Co. , Ltd. , and the Anglo- American Talc Co. , are at Madoc . The operations of the former company are probably the largest and best known in Canada . The writer , in his capacity as an engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines , was permitted by this company to make an inspection of its mine and mill in June, 1920 , and study the methods employed . This information was desired for comparison with methods employed in the United States . The following description is based on observation made during this visit , supplemented by data supplied by the company .

The rapid increase in the mmber of automobiles during the last 25 years has resulted in the insistent and growing demand for better roads of more permanent construction. Some form of State license for the operation of automobiles has been in effect almost from the time of the first "self-propelled" vehicle, and some part of the revenue derived from the sale of these licenses has been applied to the maintenance and construction of roads. However, to obtain funds with which to build their present highway systems, the individual States have resorted to the taxation of gasoline. The first State to adopt a gasoline tax was Oregon, the law becoming effective February 25, 1919. By 1928, all of the States except two had levied taxes on gasoline at rates varying from 2 to 5 cents per gallon. New York and Massachusetts passed gasoline tax laws which became effective in 1929. Regulations governing the quality and the methods of handling gasoline and other petroleum products sold in the States have also been adopted by 29 States; many of these laws antedate the adoption of a gasoline tax. The variations in motor fuel speci- fications and methods of test have been pronounced in the several States. The Bureau of Mines, in making certain technical studies of the rasolines marketed throughout the United States, the results of which are reported in its semiannual motor gasoline surveys and other reports, has had occasion to obtain and compile all of the present (April 1, 1931) tax and pection laws of the several States which relate to motor fuel and other petroleum products. To facilitate the use of this material and to obviate the need in most cases of reading the complete text of the laws as published by the States, the pertinent information was arranged in tabular form for cly reference. 3 Although digests of States gasoline tax laws' are available and copies of the complete laws can be obtained from the State agancies in charge of the enforcement of gasoline tax and inspection laws, it is believed that

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 350 natural gas samples from 19 States collected during calendar year 1362 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the Helium Activity of the Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus. Four previous publications have been made to present the results of 5,648 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines, Helium Activity, prior to 1962. The first, Bulletin 486, 3/ contains analyses and data on 2,195 gas samples collected during the period 1917-47. Bulletin 576, 4/ the second publication, includes data and analyses for 1,575 samples collected from 1947 through May 1956. The third bulletin contains 1,444 analyses and source data of samples obtained from May 1956 to January 1, 1961.

[The quantity of explosives sold in the United States in January, 1931, for domestic consumption, amounted to 368,100 kegs (9,202,510 pounds) of black blasting powder, 4,810;000 pounds of permissible explosives, and 16,533,000 pounds of high explosives other than permissible. These figures are based on reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, from nearly all manufacturing companies, and include an estimate of sues by several companies that do not furnish monthly reports. Reports actually received from manufacturers shored sales of 365,977 kegs of black blasting powder (consisting of 220,892 kegs of granular powder and 145,085 kegs of pellet powder), 4,687,900 pounds of permissible explosives, and 15,498,152 pounds of high explosives other than permissible. Sales in January, 1931, were smaller than in January last year, the decreases being 14 per cent for black blasting powder, 19 per cent for permissible, and 17 per cent for high explosives other than permissible. Sales in January 1931 when compared with soles in December 1930, show increases for all three classes of explosives as follows: 2 per cent for block blasting powder, 16 per cent for permissible explosives, and 7 per cent for other high explosives. PERMISSIBLE EXPLOSIVES: Of the 4,687,900 hounds of permissible reported sold during January, 97 per cent was used for coal-mining operations, Including 32 per cent for anthracite mines and 65 per cent for bituminous mines. The following Staten were the largest users of permissible explosives daring January: Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois, Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana, and Utah. Their combined sales represented 89 per cent of the entire sales reported for this class of explosives.]

The Bureau of Mines measured the vapor pressure of FeC12 , FeBr2, FeI2, Sb, Bi, Cd, Mg, Pb, FeC13 , and VCl2 using the Knudsen-and torsion-effusion methods, and on FeC13 -NaC1 mixtures, Au2Cl6, and MgNi2 using only the Knudsen method. Apparent vapor pressures calculated from the experimental data vary with orifice size and method of determination. Reaction with residual oxygen in the instruments was noted to have an effect on the iron halide data. Vapor pressure curves plotted as log P versus 1/T (where P is pressure and T is absolute temperature) for one substance using several orifice sizes tended to converge at a single point when extrapolated beyond the experimental region. All of the data, except those of VC12, agree with previously published results. The importance of comparing effusion measurements with those obtained by other methods and the variations encountered with various orifice sizes are discussed.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research on substitute brazing filler alloys with properties similar to those of silver filler alloys in an effort to conserve silver and reduce hazards from cadmium emissions. Experimental work was conducted first on the commercial silver brazing alloys BAg-I, BAg-la, BAg-2, and BAg-3 to establish criteria for evalu-ating the substitute alloys. Properties investigated included the wettability of copper, brass, and steel substrates, and the strength of joints made with the filler alloys. A series of experimental alloys containing 50 to 60 pct Cu, 20 to 28 pct Mn, and 17 to 30 pct Zn was prepared and evaluated, together with Cu-Mn-Zn alloys with 5 pct Pb or 2 pct Ni. Wetting properties and joint strengths were not as good as those for silver filler alloys, and the high application temperatures reduced the copper and brass base metal strengths. However, experimental alloys containing 70 pct Cu, 15 to 20 pct Mn, and 10 to 16 pct Sn had wetting and strength properties approaching those of the silver filler alloys. The application temperatures for these alloys were high-er than those for silver fillers, but not as high as those for the Cu-Mn-Zn alloys. With the Cu-Mn-Sn alloy fillers, copper alloy joint members are less deteriorated by recrystallization than when applying Cu-Mn-Zn alloys. The Cu-Mn-Sn system has potential for further devel-opment as a substitute brazing alloy system, particularly if the melting temperature can be reduced by the addition of other elements without decreasing the ductility and wetting.

Reducibility tests were run by the Bureau of Mines on an open hearth lump ore and four groups of pellets whose smelting characteristics had been deter-mined previously in the Bureau's experimental blast furnace. When reduction data from various tests were plotted on specially prepared paper l-(l-percent reduction/100)1/3 against time, the plots were linear. The iron-wustite inter-face therefore advances at a constant rate. The rate of the interface advance in mm/min was used as a reducibility index. The reducibility index measured at 900° C, using 0.45 cu ft hydrogen per minute varied inversely with the surface area of the sample. Even with carefully controlled surface areas, how-ever, duplicate reducibility indices varied considerably. When enough tests were run to give a stable mean, the mean reducibility index did correlate with blast furnace production for the four pellet groups. Results indicated that if the interface speed itself were to be used for correlation with blast furnace production, a sample size of about 180 grams of minus 0.742-plus 0.525-inch particles should be used with a test temperature of 900° C and a flow of 0.45 cu ft hydrogen per minute.

The major fire and fire injury findings for all metal/nonmetal mining categories for 1990-2001 are shown in tables 64-65. Table 66, partly illustrated in figure 22, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays for all metal/nonmetal mining categories by time period. For all metal/nonmetal operations (including stone and sand and gravel), a total of 518 fires occurred during 1990-2001; 296 of those fires caused 308 injuries and 4 fatalities (Ewhr = 4,012 x 106 hr, In = 0.015, LWD = 36,204). Thirty fires and 26 injuries involved contractors. The greatest number of fires and fire injuries occurred at surface operations; the highest risk rate values were also calculated for surface operations. The number of fires increased during the first four 2-year time periods (1990-1991, 1992-1993, 1994-1995, and 1996-1997), then decreased during the last two periods (1998-1999 and 2000-2001). The number of injuries showed a decrease throughout the periods, accompanied by an increase in employees' working hours. Twenty-five firefighting interventions by mine rescue teams in underground mines and at least 30 interventions at surface operations were required to combat these fires. However, 45 fires destroyed or heavily damaged facilities and equipment (including 19 pieces of mobile equipment) because of failure of firefighting methods, late fire detection, undetected fires, or fire size. Ninety-seven fires were detected late, and 30 fires were undetected. The ignition sources that caused the greatest number of fires were flame cutting/welding spark/slag/flame (169 fires or 33% with 137 injuries), hydraulic fluid/fuel sprayed onto equipment hot surfaces (89 fires or 17% with 46 injuries and 3 fatalities), heat source/explosion and flammable liquids/ gas/refueling fuel on hot surfaces (98 fires or 19% with 73 injuries), electrical short/arcing (51 fires or 10% with 16 injuries), and spontaneous combustion/hot material (46 fires or 9% with 17 injuries). The flame cutting/welding spark/slag/flame source caused fires usually involving welders' clothing or oxyfuel/grease and other materials (including chute and dust collector liners, flammable liquids, belt material, crusher, hopper and shaker deck materials, washer plants, equipment mechanical components, stampler breaker, hydraulic fluid, rubber tires and hoses, gear boxes, bin feeder, dump rope cables, screen liner and screen panel, kiln and shaft material, pipelines, liquor pumps, wood pallets, electrical junction boxes, handrails, grease, refuse, shop and wood). The spontaneous combustion/hot material and electrical fires were usually detected late due to lack of combustion gas/smoke detection systems. The helium resources base of the United States was estimated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Bureau) to be 894.6 Bcf as of January 1, 1989. These resources are divided into four categories in decreasing degree of assurance of their existence: (1) helium in storage and in proved natural gas reserves, 282.4 Bcf, (2) helium in probable natural gas resources, estimated at 237.7 Bcf, (3) helium in possible natural gas resources, estimated at 263.1 Bcf and (4) helium in speculative natural gas resources, estimated at 111.4 Bef. These helium resources are further divided into depleting and nondepleting, with the helium in storage being in a classification. The depleting resources are those associated with natural gasfields that are, or will be produced for the natural gas they contain. Almost all of the helium in potential (probable, possible and speculative) natural gas resources is included in this classification. These depleting resources are estimated to contain 775 Bcf of the total helium resource base. Helium resources contained in nondepleting natural gas resources, i.e., those in shut-in, abandoned, or otherwise nonproducing natural gas fields, are estimated to total 84 Bcf There is 35 Bcf of helium in storage in the Federal Government-owned Cliffside Gasfield near Amarillo, TX.

Part of the work of the Precious Metals Section is to conduct oretesting experiments on ores selected as representative of various mining districts or areas . The projects are authorized by the Metallurgical Division , and only those ores in which gold and silver or gold or silver constitute an essential part of the total values are assigned to the Precious Metals Section . Such ores include those containing the precious metals only as commercially important ingredients , as well as those containing base metals such as copper , lead , and zinc along with the gold and silver . In many instances the "ore " may be a tailing product of a grade good enough to warrant retreatment , or a concentrate for which it is desirable to develop a method of treatment to avoid the expense of shipment to a smelter . It is evident that in general the greater part of this ore - testing work is done according to standard testing procedure , such as cyanidation, amalgamation, gravity - concentration , and flotation , or a combination of these methods . The standard methods of conducting such tests have been outlined in previous reports of ore - testing studies . However , since the inauguration of this oretesting program 6 years ago , the ores submitted under authorization have become increasingly more refractory to simple methods of treatment. Consequently, a considerable number of the projects completed during the fiscal year 1941 have required an unusual amount of work and in some instances have developed into real research problems . The Bureau of Mines observed two different types of longwall mining; the advancing longwall method and the retreating longwall method at seven bituminous coal mines located in five of the coal producing states. In two mines using the advancing face method, the coal faces were abandoned because of roof failures and poor production. In the other five mines using the retreating method, roof control was good as was production. The success of longwall mining depends on good roof control and good production. The use of self-advancing hydraulic roof supports, such as Westfalia, Dowty, and Wanheim props along with Westfalia coal planers and the Anderton and Eickhoff shearer-loaders have been a factor in recent successes.

Since 1920, the Bureau of Mines and, other agencies have conducted numerous investigations of methods of communication for use in mines in times of disaster or emergency. The results of these investigations have been reported in various publications (3, 4; 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16). In November 1944, the Bureau of Mines resumed the study of emergency underground communications. Until March 1946, the program was directed toward reexamining methods of underground communication that indicated possibilities of success. Since April 1946, the principal interest of this investigation has been in methods of application of radio to communication in mines, low-frequency radio seeming to offer the most promise as a successful method of emergency mine communication. Results achieved in reexamining other methods and in the investigation or the application of low-frequency radio between November 1944 and September 1946 were reported previously in a publication entitled "Some Studies on Emergency Mine Communications".
