Surface mine blasting was recently investigated as a potential source of high concentrations of stray gases found in nearby residences of western Pennsylvania. In one incident carbon monoxide was detected in a home and in the other, high concentrations of carbon dioxide were found in a home. Both carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are by-products of blasting. However, other potential sources of these gases may also exist in a residential setting. In each case, gas chromatography (GC) and carbon isotopic analyses were used to define atmospheric concentrations inside the homes, and to determine the source of a stray gas. Molecular and isotopic analyses provide geochemical evidence as to the origin and source of the stray gas. This paper discusses elements of a stray gas investigation and the analyses necessary to identify the source of a stray gas.

The effective utilization of resources and process optimization play a crucial role in the sustaining and growth of overall businesses. This principle holds true in the mining sector, where particular attention is required during the comminution steps. This necessity arises from the fact that mining operations often consume substantial amounts of energy in mineral processing. Therefore, it becomes imperative to thoroughly study the integration of comminution steps. In many instances, an approach to be studied is the operation commencing with the drill and blast phase and culminating in the grinding product process. Nevertheless, establishing an optimal integration between drill and blast operations and the grinding phase is a complex undertaking due to the direct influence of rock characteristics on this process. And in many cases, the complexity and variability of such physical characteristics makes mining operations to ignore such influence. Consequently, Enaex Mining Technical Solutions (EMTS), in collaboration with Lundin Mining's Chapada Mine engineering team, and with the assistance of Hatch Consulting and Technology, has undertaken a comprehensive study aimed at enhancing mill throughput at the Chapada operation. The basis of this study lies in characterizing the rock masses present in the Chapada Mine to gain a deep understanding of the material that needs to be comminuted. Subsequently, the mineral processing team determined the most suitable size distribution for the Run-of-Mine (ROM) material. With this information, the drilling and blasting team built a site-specific blast fragmentation model, able to simulate various blast design scenarios. This approach enabled to optimize the utilization of available drilling and blasting resources while striving to achieve the optimum ROM characteristics. Since 2021, the Mine to Mill methodology has been progressively implemented at the Chapada Mine. As a result, the blasting engineering team now utilizes the blast plans generated by the fragmentation model simulations as a foundation for designing blast plans that align with the operational and financial capacities of the mine. Overall, it was predicted that this implementation could lead to an average increase in mill throughput of 13-22 % depending on blend feed, once all recommendations are implemented. Even with partial implementation, plant results demonstrate a 5 % increase compared to the period before the Mineto-Mill project, without any coarsening of the associated grinding product size.

Meanwhile, mounting evidence documents a dramatic cost benefit in processing where increased blast energy is available. The reasons for this dichotomy may be due to a number of factors.

This study presents a DMAIC-based approach to optimize blasting performance and achieve crusher-compatible fragmentation at the Walker-Severn Quarry in Ontario, Canada. By applying the Six Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) framework, the study aims to enhance the integration between blasting and primary crushing operations. Several representative blasts will be simulated and evaluated using both aerial and terrestrial image analysis technologies to assess fragmentation characteristics. The investigation was guided by quarry-specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), ensuring that blast design modifications were both practical and operationally relevant. Through structured analysis and data-driven refinement of blast parameters, the study reveals how this framework was used to address the quarry production demand for increased crusher throughput, and reduced processing costs. The existing quarry blast design was assessed as a baseline and compared against the crusher's inlet requirements and the acceptable fines level specified by the quarry. This evaluation aimed to identify and implement modifications to enhance blast performance. A drone (UAV) was employed to capture post-blast images and monitor blast pile displacement. These UAV images were used to generate an orthomosaic image, which was analyzed to assess fragmentation. The orthomosaic was overlaid onto a GIS platform using a 10m-by-10m grid to evaluate fragmentation distribution across the bench and identify areas requiring optimization. Additionally, drone imagery was utilized to monitor the impact of each blast on the subsequent blast's free face and to assess energy utilization for optimizing front-row holes to achieve improved fragmentation. The outcomes of this research offer a replicable methodology for continuous improvement in quarry blasting practices, with a focus on producing fragmentation that aligns with primary crusher requirements.

A run of mine, low grade gold heap leaching operation is currently looking to increase ounce recovery by decreasing run of mine fragmentation size. Current blasting practices have resulted in an average fragmentation size of 80% passing 7.05 inches (179 mm). It is estimated that a decrease of 2 inches (51 mm) in the 80% passing fragmentation size has the potential to yield up to a 2.5% increase in the overall life of mine recovery within this ore body. This potential recovery increase could lead to an increase in recoverable ounces which, in turn, would lead to a better profit margin. As this particular deposit is composed of predominantly low grade heap leach the capital investment in a crushing facility was cost prohibitive, it was therefore decided to look into the current blasting practices as a means to improve fragmentation.

Information management is important in all disciplines. In mining; collection and analysis of information before, during and even after mining is a keystone to performance. During mining, information is useful to optimize the resources and make appropriate decisions. Current technologies allow for collecting information in real time. Records of blasting activity at the mine are common practice in surface coal mining operations. The most common blast information recorded contains the location of the blast, scaled distance, geometry of the blast, weight of explosive used and quantity of blasted rock. Sometimes due to the proximity of protected structures, seismograph evidence of the particle velocity and airblast levels is required. However, in the majority of cases, the seismograph information is not linked to the blast information. Blast related information is recorded separately from the seismograph information and seismograms are little more than an attachment to the blast record. This fact makes simultaneous visualization and analysis of the technical details of the blast with the vibration and airblast information difficult.

The Mont-Wright mine is Canada's largest open-pit iron ore mine with multiple open pits in operation. It is operated by ArcelorMittal Mining Canada in the northeast of the province of Quebec, near the town of Fermont. Fragmentation of rocks with explosives generates vibrations and gas expansion that damage intact rocks, affect existing crack networks, reduce the shear strength of discontinuities and the quality of the rock mass of the highwalls. The efficiency of its blasting operations is challenged by the need to optimize production and manage the risk of mine slope instability caused by vibrations from successive blasts. This paper presents a Multiple Seed Waveform (MSW) vibration model that was established at the mine for this purpose. Near-field signature hole blast vibration monitoring was conducted in multiple areas to establish site characterization as input to the blast vibration modeling at the highwalls of the site. The vibration attenuation laws were established and the effects of different blasthole diameters, shifting frequencies and presplit design were evaluated. Based on the results obtained from the near-field blast vibration monitoring, the calibrated MSW vibration model was used to select blast design parameters to control blast vibration while maximizing productivity of blasts at Mont-Wright mine.

A large open pit iron ore mine in Brazil, which has a heterogeneous lithology, faces a challenge in defining drill and blast patterns to achieve the expected results. The mine needed to obtain an automated representation of the fragmentation curves and correlate them to the respective blasts, lithologies and quality parameters, seeking the continuous optimization of the fragmentation process and its benefits to the subsequent comminution processes. Trials were carried out for 5 months to demonstrate the functionality of an autonomous fragmentation monitoring system that analyzes the granulometric curve of the material throughout the muckpile and makes the results available online and in real time. The system, which contains a binocular camera, a processing unit and an antenna, was installed in a shovel, to evaluate the following KPI's: monitoring failures, monitoring capacity, physical availability and reportability of oversized boulders. The system analyzed 33,060 samples, with an average capacity of 285 photos every 24 hours, 127 during the day and 158 at night, all measured, analyzed, stored, and made available on its online platform, reporting 223 alerts of P80 above 400mm (15.7 in) and 38 particle sizes above 900mm (35.4 in). The inactive and operational hours of the monitoring system corresponded, respectively, to the idle and worked hours of the shovel, according to dispatch data. There were no camera or processor failures, and rain, dust or poor internet conditions did not impact sampling and fragmentation analysis, indicating 100% physical availability of the system. The autonomous monitoring analyzed 139 times more samples compared to the currently used manual method. In addition to increasing sampling representativeness and automating the process, it increases the safety, quality, and productivity of granulometric analysis, eliminating the exposure of people in the mine and human bias in the analyses. Additional analyses were performed by correlating digitally centralized drill and blast data, data from autonomous drills and fragmentation results. Automated obtention of granulometric curves favors quick decision-making and optimization of blasts to achieve better results in productivity and cost reduction in the plant and mine operation. The autonomous fragmentation monitoring system met the need presented by the mine, proving to be a key tool in continuous improvement projects, including Mine to Plant.

The DOE is evaluating Yucca Mountain, Nevada as a potential site for disposal of high level nuclear waste. Yucca Mountain is located approximately 160 km northwest of Las Vegas on the western edge of the Nevada Test Site and the Nellis Air Force Range. An exploratory tunnel has been constructed through Yucca Mountain for site characterization. A controlled drilling and blasting technique, smooth wall blasting, was used to excavate the TBM starter tunnel and alcoves off the main tunnel to provide areas for scientific investigation. Fundamental to the blasting program has been the use of two blast design equations used in concert to minimize blast damage to the surrounding rock mass. The first of these equations was developed by Roger Holmberg and estimates near-field peak particle velocity that is the basis for minimizing blast damage to the host rock. The second of these equations was developed by B. H. Sanden and provides bore hole pressure estimation which allows controls to minimize crushing of the rock mass along the perimeter yet allowing enough force to create tensile failure between perimeter bore holes. This is key to the smooth wall blasting technique. To date, essentially the same controlled drilling and blasting program has been in place for all excavation requiring controlled drilling and blasting at the ESF. The controlled drilling and blasting program uses an iterative process to achieve continuous improvement in the blast rounds. This involves interaction between Architect and Engineer (A/E), Constructor, and Testing Coordination O&e (TCO) to ensure each blast round successfully meets the expectations of affected participants. The A/E requested that the TCO provide validation of the near-field peak particle velocity estimation under the Construction Monitoring Program. Data gathered under this program were reduced by statistical analysis and used to verify blast design parameters and provide a site specific blast damage relationship.

Pentolite is a class of high explosives containing trinitrotoluene (TNT) and pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) with PETN content typically ranging from 40 to 60 wt%. Manufacture involves melting TNT, 80 °C, followed by addition of PETN and trace ingredients to form a homogeneous mixture. Once a mix is ready to be poured, several factors can influence the behavior of the finished product including how long the mix has been at temperature and cooling rate. After the manufacturing process has been completed, storage conditions combined with manufacturing conditions may cause physical changes. Two such changes explored were exudation, liquid exuding from solid boosters, and ratchet growth, irreversible volumetric expansion. Exudation is principally caused by excess water in the process. Ratchet growth is a common phenomenon of nitroaromatic compounds such as TNT where time and temperature fluctuations can cause materials to increase volume, simultaneously decreasing density. Although neither phenomenon affects common attributes such as sensitivity, performance, and shelf-life, both can cause issues in storage and handling. In this study pentolite was cast into various forms under different manufacturing conditions and evaluated over several months of controlled storage conditions including ambient, temperature cycling and elevated isothermal. Subjective and objective measurements were made throughout the evaluation period with the aim to determine the preferred storage methodology.

The use of presplitting applications in an underground mine setting is a method of reducing overbreak in the rib and back when blasting occurs. Presplitting performed at the Underground Mine Education Center (UMEC) on Montana Technological University’s campus in Butte, Montana showed a dramatic decrease in the amount of overbreak incurred in the blasting process. Application of the presplitting technique occurred after presplitting presentations at ISEE in San Antonio. Presplit testing consisted of drilling perimeter holes closer together than production holes and loading perimeter holes with a combination of specialized presplit explosive and packaged emulsion with electronic detonator initiation. The ideology was to shoot the perimeter row first, to create a fracture around the perimeter, so when the main production round is shot there is less shock exerted on the surrounding walls due to the pre-fractured perimeter rock. For the test performed, the back ended up with 83% of total holes resulting in half barrels representing a remarkable result. The right rib ended up with one half barrel visible before muck was removed while the left rib did not have any half barrels visible due to a clay seam being in very close vicinity to the perimeter row. The first test blast was a great start encouraging future work on presplitting applications in the UMEC. Additional testing will continue with different combinations of perimeter hole spacing, the addition of a buffer row along the ribs, and varying loading techniques to determine the most effective presplit method for the rock type of the UMEC. Detailed test results and loading configurations will be provided in the paper.

This paper will discuss the Wight Pit wall slash at the Mount Polley open-pit copper-gold mine that scavenged a high grade block of ore from two double-benches of the pit wall. The Wight Pit orebody, discovered in 2003, is located in the Northeast of the property with the southeast pit wall approximately 50m (165ft) from the edge of Polley Lake. In early 2009, the Wight Pit was nearing completion while an estimated 150,000 tonnes (165,000 tons) of ore averaging a grade of 1.4% copper remained just inside the southeast pit wall. The ore block started 24m (78ft) above the pit floor and extended up another 48m (157ft) with a 70o plane defining the back of the block.

Sands Hill Coal, located in Wellston, Ohio produces coal for steam generation and crushed limestone for the aggregate market in southeastern Ohio. This paper concerns the blasting and production of the limestone which lies between the #5 and #4 coal seams. The limestone bed averages 8 to 10 feet in thickness and is overlain with 17 to 20 feet of shale from the floor of the #5 seam.

Numerical modelling of fragmentation and throw is used to provide information on practical blast design parameters. The function of airdecking and its practical implications, the importance of the initiation point and aspect ratio of cratering charges and the timing between adjacent blastholes are investigated. Accuracy requirements for detonators are discussed with emphasis placed on the volume and fragmentation of the blasted rock, and compared to experimental results. Practical guidelines which have been based on intuition are examined using the model. Some of the predictions have been tested and correlate well with experimental results, obtained in the laboratory. Findings show that a minimum airdeck length is needed to realize any benefit from the application of airdecking in production blasting while the process can enhance the shock energy provided by non-ideal explosives significantly, bottom initiation of charges is beneficial to fragmentation and the aspect ratio for cratering charges can exceed the traditionally accepted ratio of 6. Regarding timing, in the ease of cratering charges, true simultaneous initiation shows beneficial results for the volume of blasted rock; however the accuracy required for practical detonators is very high. Fragmentation improves after a certain delay time while the optimum can be achieved at a range of delays. Timing affects muckpile shape; however it appears that subtle differences in delay times do not have a significant effect.

Computational modeling of explosively loaded saturated sand on a suspended plate is an inherently complex problem. In this study a computational method is used to predict the dynamic pressure load/impulse from a buried charge. A fully coupled code modeling the explosive charge, sand and air with a Eulerian mesh and the plate structure with Lagrange elements, such as Gemini-Dyna, is an appropriate computational tool. In water-saturated sand, the loadings are soil and water-transmitted shock and bubble or blast effects depending on the depth and the charge size. The computations provide the capability to determine the total impulse load placed on a horizontal plate on or above the soil due to an explosion in the saturated sand for different burial depths in saturated sand and different plate stand off distances. The following test case will be presented: (a) 4.5 Kg (10 lbs) TNT, 10.16 cm (4 in) depth of burial to top of charge, and 20.32 cm (8 inch) stand off distance (Test 4).

This paper describes extensive engineering approaches to achieve both dilution control while not hurting fragmentation in the very hard, massive ore sections of a mine case study. Ore Tracker microchips are used to correlate performance of these designs at the SAG mill (bottleneck of this specific operation). Another gold mine uses the same technology to detect when and where operational dilution is happening. The system tells where flagging of the different ore bodies has been followed in order to detect which operators pass the excavation limits beyond ore control flagging.
