A process for the recovery of copper from the waste oxide copper of a mined-out sulphide orebody is described. Hydrometallurgical recovery of copper from this and similar wastes has been tried several times previously without success. Leaching is carried out by sulphuric acid in columns under conditions that minimise the iron content of the pregnant leach liquor, and copper is then recovered by ion exchange rather than the more conventional solvent extraction. The resin is stripped by spent electrolyte and copper is electrowon. Results are presented for testwork originally carried out in 1993, and repeated in 2006, and the novel aspects of the process, leaching and ion exchange, are discussed. Finally, preliminary order of magnitude capital and operating costs are given, demonstrating that the process is cost effective.

The Raglan Mill had been in production for less than a year when the initial toxicity tests on the effluent revealed that it was defined as ?toxic? under regulations. Testwork was begun to address the fundamental reasons for the toxicity and a systematic approach was initiated to identify causes. Elimination of the problem presented a challenge once the main conclusion identified high dissolved solids as the principal culprit. In particular, normally benign soda ash (sodium bicarbonate) reagent additions used in milling, was identified as the main contributor to the problem. Following analysis of all requirements and safety considerations, a concept to recycle 100% of the mill process water was pursued. In addition to meeting regulatory requirements, this project would have numerous positive benefits to the operation, including reducing fresh water consumption and lowering costs.

Steelmaking slag contains nutrition such as Si, P and Fe for acceleration of phytoplankton growth. Phytoplankton can fixate carbon dioxide more than any other species on earth. Hence, suppression of CO2 can be achieved by applying the potential of steelmaking slag as the nutrition for their propagation. When it is considered to supply nutrition from steelmaking slag to seawater, we must avoid dissolution of hazardous elements or change of pH of seawater by steelmaking slag addition into seawater. The protection against dissolution of fluorine into artificial seawater has been studied based on dissolution behavior of steelmaking slag and synthesized substances into artificial seawater in the present work. The dissolution mechanism of fluorine from steelmaking slag and buffering action of pH change are discussed by using stability diagram in seawater.

The Top Submerged Lance (TSL) technology has obtained significant importance in the pyrometallurgy industry for nearly four decades. One of the advantages of TSL furnace is its high reaction rate, which is caused by splashing and turbulence of the melt. In contradiction, this phenomenon stands as a barrier for conducting experimental investigations to validate the simulation models. The highly turbulent and splashing environment in the TSL furnace is caused due to the immersion of the lance into the slag layer and thus the effect of the flame structure is directly related to the splashing, turbulence, reaction kinetics and life-span of the lance. Moreover, the material properties such as viscosity, density and the surface tension will also influence the flame structure. As a first step to understand the flame structure, attempts are made to generate a stable flame of the lance in an open environment. INTRODUCTION Top Submerged Lance (TSL) technology was invented during the 1970s at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia by Floyd and Denholm. This technology was later commercialised and currently, there are about 100 TSL plants around the world commissioned by various licence holders such as AUSMELT (Outotec) and ISASMELT (Xstrata- Glencore Technology). Copper is the most produced non-ferrous metal followed by lead and zinc, see Hunt (2005). Today, a wide range of primary, secondary, and complex recycling materials are used as a feed material in the TSL, Alvear et al. (2010), Kaye et al. (2008). The working principle of TSL technology lies on inserting and submerging a lance from the top of a vertical cylindrical chamber into the slag layer. The lance is considered as the heart of the furnace, where the air and fuel are transported through two concentric tubes and are mixed in a combustion chamber, which is approximately 7 cm from the tip of the lance (considering the pilot-scale TSL furnace at the Institute for Nonferrous Metallurgy and Purest Materials - INEMET). The TSL furnace is very flexible with the type of fuel, feed material and the air input. The fuel can be natural gas/heating oil/fine coal particles and the air could be enriched with oxygen (Figure 1). The general mechanism of the TSL furnace lies on feeding the material from the top of the furnace and the material is pulled into the molten bath due to the high turbulent atmosphere, which results in high reaction rates. The thermocouples installed in the furnace (i.e. in the ceramic linings) allow the operator to know the temperature of the melt. For example, in the case of copper production the tapped material (i.e. matte/metal) can be transported to a settler for further processing or directly used.

The process of arriving at the size and grade of: (a) a newly-discovered body of mineralization, (b) a potential ore resource, (c) an orebody proposed for mining, or (d) the ore reserves in a mine, requires fundamental geological, and geometrical determinations as well as physical and chemical analyses. This paper outlines geological and geometrical features considered critical, in the authors' experience, in realistic reserve determination. These are discussed under the headings "The Four Cs". They include the Character, type or nature of the mineralization; the Continuity of various types of mineralization in the deposit; various key concerns in the Calculation besides the mathematics; and the Classification section which refers to basic considerations in classifying a mineral estimate. It is suggested that the responsibility for the calculation of a Resource or Reserve should be that of a geologist experienced in the ore type under review. Further, it should be the responsibility of the board of directors of the company owning the deposit to ensure that a sufficiently experienced person is chosen to carry out the process.

"Breccias with angular and rounded clasts of a late-mineralization, ""barren"" hornblende porphyry dike set within a comminuted matrix consisting of rock fragments and quartz, cemented by quartz and K-feldspar of hydrothermal origin is observed in diamond drill cores from the Sar Cheshmeh porphyry copper deposit. Studies of age relationship between vein types, phyllic-altered clasts and the breccia groundmass suggest that the brecciation is a late event. The breccia clasts record evidence of hydrothermal reaction between the clasts and fluids responsible for the brecciation.Formation of bornite, in the breccia clasts of the originally barren hornblende porphyry dike, and in the breccia matrix, along with the scarcity of bornite in the Sar Cheshmeh deposit itself suggest involvement of fluids which are later and of different composition from the fluids responsible for the known mineralization at Sar Cheshmeh. These later fluids may be related to a later plutonic event and suggest the possibility of a later, and concealed deposit."

Based on the kinetics relationships of a solid - gas model, a software was developed for the prediction of oxidation. Preliminary prediction of oxidation by the software and experimental results of MgO-C refractories were studied and compared. By using the obtained data from this approach, the effective diffusion coefficient, intermolecular diffusion coefficient and diffusion activation energy in the MgO-C refractories, containing various amount of graphite were obtained at different temperatures. First of all, the prediction by the software was very compatible with experimental results, for different oxidation mechanisms in the MgO-C refractories. The results showed that pore diffusion is the predominant oxidation mechanism in this system. The results indicated that when graphite content was above 10wt%, the intermolecular diffusion coefficient was independent from graphite content, and it was closed to a constant value at each temperature.

"The Riviera tungsten occurrence in the Cape Province of South Africa was discovered in October 1979 as a result of stream-sediment panned concentrate sampling. The Cape age granite and late Precambrian Malmesbury Group carbonates and chlorite schists which it intrudes and which host the mineralization are covered by between 10 m and 30 m of Tertiary/Recent alluvium and clay. The scheelite/powellite and molybdenite mineralization occurs in a greisenized granite cupola with an overprint of porphyry-type alteration as well as in minor skarns. The ore reserve is estimated to be 46 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.216% W03 and 0.020070 Mo. The deposit is uneconomic at current tungsten prices. IntroductionDuring the 19705, Union Carbide Corporation was a major producer, processor and supplier of tungsten and derivative products to end-user manufacturing industries. The corporation owned and operated two tungsten mines in the United States, and one in Brazil, and operated a plant in the United States which produced ammonium paratungstate (APT) which is an intermediate product in the production of tungsten wire and tungsten carbide for cutting tool insets and hard facings. In 1975 the three mines were ageing with short-life reserves and high production costs. The world market for tungsten was buoyant and prices, in constant dollar terms, had risen steadily over the past 15 years (Fig. 1).It was against this background that a decision was made to explore for tungsten in North America, South Mrica, Australia and Brazil."

"This paper is an attempt to outline the structural problems at the Cochenour Willans mine, in so far as their details have been tentatively worked out. It must be emphasized that there are considerable data that can be interpreted in more than one way, and that further work may modify or completely change some of the hypotheses presented herein. Certain features, however, are sufficiently constant to warrant reliance on them when searching for extensions of orebodies.As the individual ore shoots usually have relatively small dimensions, but are often very high grade, structural details are of more than usual significance in laying out a mining programme. An illustration of this is a small shoot recently located and mined as a result of studying a minor slip cutting off a part of high grade gold ore in No. 319 stope. The shoot, which is bounded on three sides by slips, and on the fourth by the original stoping, was roughly triangular in plan, 20 feet on the base, and 40 feet in length. The average width mined was 4.5 feet, but the gold obtained totalled over 1,800 oz.The property lies in Dome township, east of McKenzie island, and consists of an original group of thirteen claims acquired from the Cochenour Willans syndicate, plus one additional group of five claims obtained by purchase from the Kelson Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited, and one other claim that rounds out the southeast corner of the block.The claims of the original group were staked by W. M. Cochenour, Dan Willans, and Horace Young, during 1926 and 1927. The Cochenour Willans Syndicate was formed in 1928, and until incorporation of the present Company work was carried on at varying intervals by several different interests, including Ventures Limited, Hollinger Consolidated, who sank a shaft to open up the 150-foot level, and by the Syndicate itself. The first ore from the property was shipped to the Gold Eagle mill by the present Company in 1939, and amounted to 4,959 tons, from which 2,360 oz. gold was recovered. The first brick was poured in December, 1939, and production has been continuous since that date. To the end of June, 1946, gold having a value of $5,982,000 has been produced from 345,033 tons of ore treated."

"The Stump Lake mining camp is in Nicola mining division of southern British Columbia. It lies about halfway between the cities of Kamloops and Merritt.The deposits at Stump Lake are among the earliest lode discoveries of British Columbia, many of the claims having been staked between 1882 and 1885. A considerable amount of work was done prior to 189Cl, after which very little was done until 1916. Since that time mining has been carried on at intervals, much of it on the same deposits, by a number of companies, including the Donahue Mines Corporation, the Planet Mines and Reduction Company, the Nicola Mines and Metals Company, the Consolidated Nicola Goldfields, Limited, and others. According to the British Columbia Department of Mines, total production from the area has been: gold, 8,520 oz.; silver, 259,413 oz.; copper, 40,822 lb.; lead, 2,208,859 lb.; and zinc, 367,869 lb. Most of the production has come from the Enterprise vein and a branch of the Enterprrsethe King William vein."

This work explores the effect of ore hardness variability on the design of a solar photovoltaic system with battery storage and grid backup, to operate a semi-autogenous grinding mill (SAG). First, a case of two synthetic ore populations was studied, without any consideration of spatial distribution. The mean and variance of the ore hardness (measured in specific energy consumption) of both populations were subjected to a sensitivity analysis. The operation was evaluated with one and two stockpiles. The latter allows classifying according to ore hardness to adapt the SAG energy consumption to the solar cycle. The results show that using two stockpiles allows achieving a larger autonomy (i.e., fewer energy imports) at lower total costs, especially when the difference of mean hardness between the two populations is large. The difference in variance (between the two populations) has a smaller impact on the design recommendations. Second, a case study was performed considering the spatial distribution of geometallurgical units. Two cases were considered: (a) brownfield, when there is historical information of the actual variability of the ore hardness; and (b) greenfield, when the system design relies mainly on geometallurgical modeling. Brownfield and greenfield planning result in similar sizing recommendations of the solar power plant if precise drill cores are available. In this case, geometallurgical modeling is an effective tool for forecasting the energy demand necessary for designing the power plant. INTRODUCTION Solar energy can help make mining more sustainable (Moreno-Leiva et al., 2017). With falling battery costs, an autonomous solar supply is soon to become an economical alternative in many parts of the world, even in the presence of a larger power grid (Child et al., 2017). Although this, places with high solar radiation such as the Atacama Desert in Chile, nowadays show a large potential of incorporating solar energy as a supply of energy. Many of the Chilean copper mines are in this zone making it interesting to study their compatibility and potential of integrating this renewable source to their operation. The power demand in a copper mineral processing plant is determined by the main power loads in grinding and flotation, with grinding typically the largest power consumer, especially the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills (Wei and Craig, 2009). In Chile, it corresponds on average the 50% of the electrical energy consumption (COCHILCO, 2013). Solar energy production is determined by the irradiance perceived into the solar photovoltaic (PV) panels (which varies through the geographic location) and several other climatic parameters such as the current season, humidity, temperature, altitude, and others (Molina et al., 2017). Also, solar energy is only generated during the sun hours, getting to a maximum generation at a certain peak hour during midday, and finally dropping to zero during the night. This shows a cyclic parabolic profile as shown in Figure 1. Due to the SAG mill operated continuously, the power supply always must be available. During the night, to continue supplying the energy, it is necessary to complement the solar power generation with a battery energy storage system (BESS), which will act as a power backup and a buffer. For the optimal sizing of this PV- BESS system, information of the demand profile is needed (Pamparana et al., 2017). In the case of the SAG mill operation, the resulting demand relates to the ore-hardness for a specific throughput and grind size (Morrell, 2004). Therefore, for a given throughput and target grind size, a harder ore would require more power, and variable hardness results in more variable demand and a subsequent need for larger energy storage (Bueno et al., 2015). PROSPECTING is popularly supposed to be surrounded with an air of romance and adventure. The word 'prospecting' brings to mind high mountains, northern lakes, and aeroplanes. A note of urgency has been added to this by the war, particularly in the case of strategic, minerals. Prospecting for strategic minerals in a modern mine in full production, although it may Jack the romance of travel in little-known places, has the advantage of having all the necessary machinery at hand and ready to go into action at a moment's notice. HISTORY Tin was discovered in the Sullivan ore in 1925, when a white streak was noticed on a pilot table which was being used to check the amount of galena in the tailing. The mineral which made up this streak was identified as cassiterite. The amount of tin in the ore is so small that, while of scientific interest, it was considered to be of very little economic importance. Nevertheless, several attempts were made to learn something of the occurrence during times when other work was nor pressing. These studies were dropped when anything came up that seemed more important.

Modem civilization is indebted to that most ancient of the skilled crafts - the art of stone working, as the one consistent means whereby the dim un-recorded past has conveyed to our modem schools of science volumns of facts, written in characters of imperishable stone. Although left, centuries ago, to ruin and decay, architectural examples of the ancient building crafts still remain to the glory of the old master-builders, whose accomplishments in that remote age continue to influence and inspire their modem successors. Present-day architects and builders will leave to posterity just as faithful a record of our modes of living and of the methods now adopted for protection, as if it had been made by written word; and our craftsmen have profited greatly, in meeting modem requirements, by taking advantage of the indurance and utility of stone. Stone in all ages and stages of the world's civilization and development has been the material chosen by the masterbuilder, the one material possessing qualities that render it most desirable in affecting the artistic ideals of each period. It perfects the science of architecture through its durability and thus renders possible the study of man's workmanship in stone throughout periods of civilization of which we have no specific written account. Other materials have been used for the construction of man's habitations, but none have withstood the test of time, nor have established the credit of designer and builder so well as stone. _All other materials fall into ruin and decay, leaving neither mark nor monument for the enlightenment of mankind.

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the impact of Building Information Modeling (BIM) on Just-In-Time (JIT) material delivery, with a focus on how the use of BIM can help improve efficient implementation of JIT and reduce the cost of material management. Previous research and a number of case studies have addressed the positive impact of BIM on construction at large but none focused on JIT in construction. This paper presents a methodology for selecting reliable material vendors. It also utilises the integration of BIM and scheduling software to generate quantities of material and its required delivery time to improve the flow process and improve its reliability to minimise related delays and productivity losses arising from idle and non-productive time of equipment and labour on jobsites. 4D visualization is utilized to support coordination and timing of JIT material deliveries in an effort to minimize congestion on job sites. Case studies on JIT material deliveries are presented and the impact of BIM implementation on reducing the cost of material management is evaluated. The joint effect of BIM and JIT on quality control, elimination of waste, reduction of inventory buffers, and on relationships with material vendors are evaluated by analysing and comparing data from case studies. The paper also presents a methodology based on multi-attribute decision criteria for modelling the selection criteria for material vendors. The model can assist in ranking vendors not only based on cost and quality but also on their reliability in delivering material on time.

"The Omega mine is in McVittie township in the Larder Lake area, Ontario. Production at the mine commenced in 1936, and, until the end of 1946, ore milled amounted to 1,558,604 tons, from which 207,074 oz. gold and 28,205 oz. silver, valued at $7,585,470, were recovered. The mine workings extend to a depth of 1,975 feet.GEOLOGYThe geology of the mine has been described in detail by C. P. Jenney (l) and the writer (2). The general geology and structure in the vicinity of the mine is discussed on an earlier page in this volume. The rock formations found in the mine workings are indicated on the accompanying plan and section (Figs. 1and2). They consist of an intermingled, south dipping complex of volcanics, sediments, and secondary talc-chlorite schists and carbonates. The carbonatized rocks, which are often referred to as 'dolomite' in the Larder Lake camp, are siliceous-carbonate replacements in the talc-chlorite schist zones. In places they contain green mica, probably fuchsite, and are cut by a stockwork of quartz veinlets and stringers. A stock of syenitic intrusives lies south of the mine workings.STRUCTUREThe main structural features are indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The formations and orebodies have a pronounced southerly dip, which flattens with depth. The talc-chlorite schist and 'dolomite' zones are part of the Larder Lake fault or 'break' on which there appears to be very large displacement. Evidence throughout the district would indicate that the south side moved up and, in the case of the Omega mine, the thrust may have been distributed throughout the several intensely sheared zones. This slice faulting could account for the repetition of sediments and volcanics. An alternative possibility would be original interbedding of volcanics and sediments."

A review is presented of the fundamental differences between the Superior and Churchill geologic provinces. Structure, lithology, grade of metamorphism and a single recent age determination suggest that the Flin Flon -Snow Lake and Lynn Lake belts are remnant blocks of originally Superior rocks lying within the Churchill province. Major mineral belts occur along the main boundary between the Superior and Churchill provinces (the Thompson -Moak Lake nickel belt) and within the remnant Superior blocks inside the Churchill province (Fiin Flon -Snow Lake and Lynn Lake). During the Hudsonian orogeny, metamorphic gradients must have existed across the Churchill-Superior boundary and between the remnants of Superior rocks and the enclosing gneisses of the Churchill province. It is possible that not only the unusual nickel deposits of the Thompson belt but also the base metal deposits of the Flin Flon -Snow Lake and Lynn Lake districts are due to redistribution, or diffusion and migration of metals to areas of lower-grade metamorphism during the Hudsonian orogeny.

Tamano Refinery started its operation in 1972 with the cathode production capacity of 84,000 tons per year. After several expansions, the production capacity increased to 228,000 tons per year in 2001. In this paper, we are introducing our next expansion projects starting October 2006. The project expands the production capacity of cathode from 228,000 tons to 260,000 tons per year. The main modification of this project is the conversion to the ISA process and the installation of additional seventy-two cells in the No.2 Tankhouse. The No.1 Tankhouse remains the same, using the conventional process. Half of our starting sheet cells are converted to commercial cells. The other expansions are to enlarge our purification plant. And the incidental facilities are enlarged, for example, circulation tanks, heat exchangers, filtration system, etc. Finally, this paper describes those improvements to our refinery performance and preparing for future expansions.

Cold drawing of copper wire rod is usually combined with an in-line annealing process to adjust the ductile microstructure of the wire again. One important key factor for successful annealing is the quality of the copper itself. Rod producers can check the recrystallization behaviour of the rod by different methods: chemical analysis, Spiral Elongation Test (SEN) as well as the Rapid Elongation Test (AR) are some examples of common testing methods. The comparison of the results of these methods does not always show sufficient correlations. The paper introduces firstly the SEN and AR-Tests and their different approaches to the mentioned task. The second step is to compare some results of the SEN-Test with the results of the AR-Test and identify causes of deviations. Thirdly, the effect of pre-annealing is discussed, which is especially common for wire rod with diameters of more than 8 mm.

Electrodeless conductivity was employed to investigate the feasibility of continuous on-line monitoring of the free acidity of sulphate and/or chloride solutions of Cu and other base metals from various hydrometallurgical processes. These solutions were measured with both commercial and experimental electrodeless conductivity sensors from 15 to 250°C. It was confirmed that hydrogen ion has the greatest impact on conductivity by carrying the bulk of the current because it is the most mobile ion. In combination with a solution speciation analysis the conductivity sensor can be calibrated to account for the contribution of Cu electrolytes as well other dissolved salts allowing fast and accurate on-line measurement of free acid. The sensor was tested at both lab and pilot scale with very good performance. The average difference between the measured and the titrated acid concentration was less than 5%, which is excellent for industrial applications.

"Refractory materials are an integral part of aluminium production. One special feature of aluminium making is the prominent role of sodium in all parts of the production process. This presence of sodium inflicts stresses on the refractory materials through reactions and may cause severe damages to the refractory linings. The present paper address possible reactions between sodium and refractories in anode bake furnaces, electrolytic pots and casting furnaces. The discussions presented in the paper points to the importance of selecting materials with excellent alkali resistance in all parts of the aluminium making process, although alkali resistance is not the sole parameter to determine refractory life-time. ""Acid"", i.e. silica-rich alumino-silicate refractories are shown to be the best materials for aluminium electrolysis cell potlinings, whereas high- alumina refractories based on minerals like andalusite seems to be the preferred choice for anode bake furnaces as well as cast house furnaces."
