"Simulation techniques may be used to optimize existing processes and plant operations, and in plant design at the engineering study stage of a project . This paper describes the latter application, using a computer, to optimize the concentrate stockpile requirements of a modern copper smelter.A large open-pit mining operation is envisaged and it is assumed that copper concentrate is smelted in two flash furnaces. The proposed mining plan gives rise to metaffurgical considerations in smelting which dictate that concentrate blending is carried out in the early years of operation in order to eliminate wide variations in the grade of concentrate charged to the furnaces . Stockpiling facilities are therefore necessary for blending purposes and also to provide a strategic reserve of concentrate to ensure continuity of concentrator and smelting operations.The objective of the study is to determine the optimum size of concentrate stockpile required to take account of both metaffurgical and strategic considerations. Two separate simulation models are developed to achieve this objective. The first model is used to determine the minimum size of stockpile necessary for blending purposes to smooth out variations in concentrate grade between 15 - 60% Cu, with associated 34 6% Fe, respectively, and ensure that the concentrate fed to the furnaces does not faff below 12% Fe, which is considered a minimum for good smeltability.The second simulation model covers a projected three-year operating period and indicates the maximum size of stockpile which is likely to develop during scheduled and unscheduled shutdown periods in the concentrator and smelter.Covered storage volume and conveying facilities for the optimum size of concentrate stockpile can be designed based on the results generated by the simulation models."

"Gold occurs in Nova Scotia in three ways, saddle reefs, fissure veins, and fossil placers. Of these the saddle reefs are the commonest. They have been the source of most of the gold and have also been the subject of most of the literature on the gold occurrences.The Meguma or Gold-bearing series of Nova Scotia is a conformable succession of quartzite's and slates, possibly Precambrian in age, which have been folded into a number of anticlines and synclines that strike (Fig. 1) roughly east and west. This folding has been termed Acadian and is probably a westward continuation of the Caledonian revolution in Britain. It may have started in the Ordovician and continued through the Silurian and into the Lower Devonian. It was followed by the intrusion of the great Devonian granite batholiths. It is thought that the mineralization is connected with the late phases of the cooling of the granite. As the name saddle reef implies, the veins form on the crests and flanks of the anticlines, possibly in the synclinal troughs as well. The beds favoured by the solutions are the slates. The reason for this is apparent when it is realized that in order to fold over 30,000 feet of sediments (the thickness of the Meguma according to E. R. Faribault) through p radians of arc it is necessary to have a differential movement between the top and bottom beds of p times the thickness of the sediments. In the case of the Gold-bearing series, in which strong quartzite beds lie between incompetent slate beds, most of this differential movement was taken up in the slates. The evidence for this is the remarkably fine drag folding and the intense shearing and comminution of some of the beds of slate (Fig. 1). The quartzites exhibit some shearing and faulting, but there is little doubt that the greater permeability lay along the incompetent slate beds. The mineralizing solutions followed these beds and also passed from one slate bed to another through a joint or fault in the intervening bed of quartzite. These joining veins are called angulars in Nova Scotia. Within the veins the gold is in shoots and the real problem is to find out what controls the position and extent of the shoots."

"Determining the correct mechanism of a boiler tube failure is important for the prevention of future tube failures. Proper corrective measures can be undertaken to alleviate the root cause or causes for a failure only when the correct mechanism is known. A mechanism of boiler tube failure is defined as the process which degrades the tube and produces a failure.An expert system package was developed for use by electric utility power plant personnel during investigation into the cause of a boiler tube failure. It is intended to assist their efforts to recognize and identify a basic failure mechanism that can produce the type of boiler tube failure under investigation. The program guides the user to the most likely failure mechanism by asking simple questions, answers which can be obtained by determining the failure location, type of fuel, and from visual inspection of the failed tube. Expert systems are a form of artificial intelligence which imitate the decision-making process of experts.IntroductionBoiler tube failures (BTFs) continue to be the single largest source of forced outages in fossil fired electricity generating stations. Because of this a concentrated effort is being made to minimize boiler tube failure occurrences. Eliminating boiler tube failures could be worth $5 billion a year to the electric power industry(1).The aggressive service environment of fossil-fired boilers is largely the reason for these failures because the combined effects of stress, temperature, corrosion, erosion and vibration cause deterioration of boiler tube material properties and reduction in wall thickness.Determination of the boiler tube failure mechanism is important for the prevention of future problems. The root cause for a failure can be established and proper ameliorative measures taken only when the failure mechanism is identified correctly. The correct identification of failure mechanism is a complex process which may include many individuals and institutions. Technical specialists in metallurgy, chemistry, combustion, and boiler design frequently cooperate with the station staff in a failure investigation . These individuals rely on personal experience and numerous reports , theories, studies, private communications and investigations concerning the different failure modes and mechanisms."

"A characteristic of all methods of copper concentrate smelting is that slags with a high copper content are produced at some phase of the operation. Recirculation to the smelting unit, electric furnace reduction or flotation are at present used on an industrial scale to recover the copper from these slags. This paper describes the application of the top-blowing technique, originally developed by KHD Humboldt- Wedag AG for refining of metallic copper, for the treatment of copper-containing slags. By this method, a mixture of a reducing gas and commercial oxygen is blown onto the melt at velocities which can be supersonic from the tip of a water cooled lance. The impingement of the reaction gas mixture on the surface of the slag forms a depression in the molten phase and a deflection of the jet which brings the slag into a rotating motion. This causes high rates of heat and mass transfer. Results of pilot-plant tests for batch and continuous treatment of slags are presented, and the potential applications of top blowing for industrial-scale operation are indicated. In combination with the cyclone as a smelting unit, this process appears to be economic for smelters of very low capacity."

"Since potash was discovered substantial rock mechanics research has been done to develop the technology needed to cope with the unique conditions in Saskatchewan mines, to assure general mine safety and to assess the problems associated with mining potash at depth.The practical result of this research was the development of multiple entry systems incorporating yielding pillars for access ways and the chevron type layouts for production panels. These developments proved the viability of extracting potash from between 950 m and 1100 m depth using a high degree of mechanization. High extraction ratios could not, however, be achieved using the developed technology.The presence of a competent salt back is critical to mining the potash, and underground practice is governed by the presence of anomalous geological zones. These factors may be associated with the occurrence of brine inflows. One potash mine in Saskatchewan ceased its underground operations and was closed due to flooding of the entire mine. Two other potash mines in Saskatchewan had significant brine inflows. The costs involved in brine pumping, equipment relocation, bulkhead construction, grouting, and in auxiliary operations can run into the tens of millions of dollars.At Central Canada Potash, the use of stress relief and yielding pillars in the design of the mining layouts has resulted in over-all stable underground excavations and safe mining practices. There are two types of production room s, the chevron and the hybrid, which result in a planned block average extraction ratio of 35010. Mining activity has resulted in brine ingresses in two areas, and additional operating costs have been incurred over the years. These mining areas have demonstrated abnormally high closure rates, and rapid back deterioration. A program was established in those two areas to ensure the practice of safe mining procedures.The short-term perspectives inherent in the program included the elimination of all uncertainties associated with the possibility of an increase in brine inflow leading to flooding, the elimination of the abnormal ground behaviour and ground deterioration in the inflow areas, and the reduction of the long-term adverse effects of mining on regional mine stability. The program was also designed to provide means for developing alternative safe mine layouts which would improve the exploitation of potash resources. Details of the extensive work performed during the program are found elsewhere (E. De Souza, 1988).Grouting and salt backfilling are viable techniques to control brine inflows in underground excavations in potash mines. Detailed instrumentation of the backfilled test areas provides information on the long-term behaviour and effectiveness of the grout/backfill system, allowing for rational decisions on the complete abandonment of these mined out areas, thus resulting in considerable operational cost savings.This paper is presented in two parts: the first addressed the problems of diamond drilling , grouting and backfilling in Panel 209 and the second, addresses the problems of instrumentation and rock mechanics."

Formulas are derived for the parameter effect of vibrations, applicable to the design of flotation machine. "A study of the techniques to integrally cast copper tubes in copper tuyeres for use in blast furnaces has been carried out. The work has been performed in support of current efforts to produce two-compartment tuyeres having improved water-cooling capacity. A test pattern corresponding to a vertical section of a two-compartment tuyere, and including a cast-in-place copper tube, was used to investigate such variables as tube preparation, tube coolant, pouring temperature, pouring rate and gating design. Successful castings, either with a good metalfurgical bond or good intimate contact between the tube and the casting, were produced, with all combinations of gating system and position of the tube tried. However, the pouring temperature, the pouring rate and the effectiveness of the coolant are interrelated and must be controlled to produce a good metallurgical bond.IntroductionAs part of its contribution to, and in collaboration with, the Copper Casting for the Steel Industry Committee, CANMET has undertaken research into the methods and techniques needed for the integral casting of copper tubes into high-conductivity copper castings.The objective was to produce two-compartment copper blast furnace tuyeres in which the water-cooled nose compartment consists of a copper tube metallurgically bonded to the wall of the high-conductivity copper casting. This design, developed in the UK, has demonstrated a much extended service life with attendant economies; unscheduled shutdown of blast furnaces due to tuyere failure is a significant problem in the steel industry. The Canadian steel industry believes that this design will replace the currently used single-compartment tuyere in blast furnaces within a few years.The technology to produce these tuyeres does not exist in Canada. One of the main features is the inclusion of a smooth-walled cooling channel in the nose, which permits high velocity cooling water to be employed. A second compartment acts as a reservoir backup, should failure in the nose occur. This would allow continued use of the tuyere for a period of time, permitting a scheduled shutdown for repair s. To assist the Canadian producers of tuyeres to maintain their market, and the Canadian steel industry to have a reliable domestic supply, it is important that the necessary technology for the production of two-compartment tuyeres be developed and transferred to industry."

"As an alternative to conventional dewatering by vacuum filtration and oil-fired rotary dryers, Brunswick Mining conducted extensive pilot-scale testwork on its copper, lead, zinc and bulk concentrates using a Larox Oy (Finland) automatic pressure filter. The results showed that pressure filtration readily produced final cake moistures of 6-8.5 per cent on this very fine sulphide material.An in-depth analysis examines pressure filtration in terms of metallurgical performance and projects energy savings of 78 per cent for pressure filters over the current dewatering operation. Potential energy and operating cost reductions are also estimated.IntroductionVacuum filters followed by oil-fired rotary dryers are one of the most common means of dewatering mineral concentrates. They represent, however, a level of technology which is exceedingly wasteful in terms of manpower, space utilization equipment and fossil fuel dependence. In addition, the use of thermal dryers is leading to increased environmental concerns both in plant and out.These were the primary factors which prompted Brunswick Mining to consider alternative dewatering methods as the existing equipment came up for replacement and upgrading. In late 1979, company engineers were encouraged by automatic Larox pressure filters seen at several Scandinavian operations. Subsequent laboratory tests by the manufacturer (Larox Oy of Finland) on several concentrate samples were sufficiently promising for Brunswick and Noranda to lease a trailer mounted filter-lab unit and a technician from Larox for a five-week period. Extensive on-site testwork on all four Brunswick concentrates (zinc, lead, copper and 'bulk' lead-zinc) confirmed the potential of pressure filtration."

"The Underground Test Facility (UTF) project operated by the Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA) north of Fort McMurray has achieved marked success in field testing mining access and horizontal well in situ recovery of bitumen from the Athabasca oil sands.Mine access has provided for effective placing and operation of horizontal wells in the oil sands from a tunnel system in the underlying limestone. Performance of the in situ recovery process, Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage, has substantially exceeded forecasts made at the start of the project. Over-all results of the program to date show great promise for horizontal well in situ technology as a competitive source of bitumen from Alberta's vast oil sands deposits. The potential economics of a commercial expansion at the site are reviewed in this paper.IntroductionIn situ recovery o f bitumen from the Athabasca oil sands has puzzled the oil industry for many year s, but a breakthrough appears close at hand. The Underground Test Facility (UTF) project initiated by the Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA) has had notable success in the piloting of horizontal well processes, which offer prospects for commercial development even under the highly competitive situation facing the Canadian industry . "An overview of the status of the development and application of Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IOCC) power generation is presented. Current projects in North America, Europe and Japan are described, together with the status of plans to apply the technology in Canada. A brief review of the technology is presented, including promising coproduction cycles and hybrid gasification fluid bed processes. The ability of the process to be modified for CO2 to be extracted for enhanced oil recovery or disposal is addressed. The environmental impact of IGCC technology is compared to those of other power generation technologies IntroductionDefinition and HistoryIntegrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) technology is a concept which has been around for about 50 years but has been generating increasing interest in the last 10 to 15 years. This paper focusses on coal as the feedstock for gasification. Other feedstocks used in gasification systems have included oil, biomass, tires and petroleum coke. IGCC technology integrates coal gasification with generation of electricity by means of a combined cycle system which fires the produced gas in the gas turbine. Figure 1 shows the basic components of an IGCC system which are the gasifier, the gas cleanup system and sulphur recovery plant, the gas turbine/generator set, the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and the steam turbine/generator set. The benefits of an IGCC system over a conventional Rankine Cycle pulverized coal (RCPC) fired system for the generation of electricity from coal are that the IGCC system has potential to have higher efficiency and lower emissions of NO., SO and CO2 per unit of power produced than the corresponding RCPC system."

In the presence of joint sets sub-parallel to a slope face, the stability of the rock mass is controlled by the shear strength of the joints. On one hand, if the joints are persistent their shear strength can be assessed according to Mohr-Coulomb criterion, assuming appropriate values for the cohesion and the friction angle on the joint surface. On the other hand, if the joints are non-persistent with their continuity being interrupted by the presence of rock bridges, their shear strength will increase considerably. In this latter case, the contribution of the rock bridges to the shear strength of the joint has to be accounted for in order to better assess the stability of the rock mass. A numerical analysis of the progressive failure of a rock slope involving a non-persistent joint has been set up based upon simulations performed using a Discrete Element Method (DEM) algorithm specifically enhanced for the modeling of jointed rock masses. Pre-existing discontinuities are explicitly accounted for in the model by using a modified contact logic that ensures an explicit and constitutive mechanical behavior of the joint planes. In addition, rock bridges can be spatially distributed along these joint planes following a prescribed probabilistic technique. Jennings’ formulation (Jennings, 1970) is considered as one of the first rock slope analysis that evaluates the shear resistance to sliding as a weighted combination of the shear resistance of the intact rock and the joint planes. The validity of this formulation is discussed in the present study. Contrary to the Jennings’ formulation, we show that tensile failure is an important mechanism, particularly as the dip angle of the sliding plane increases.

For efficient leaching of gold from sulfide ores and the oxidation of sulfides into sulfates, it is necessary to introduce a substantial amount of oxidant - atomic oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, ozone, potassium or sodium hypochlorite. In this paper, hypochlorite electrochemical treatment is proposed as an effective method of intensification of refractory ore leaching. The objective of the study is to increase the gold recovery from refractory ores with the application of chlorinated solutions that are modified by chemical or electrochemical treatment. The advantages of the use of the modified chlorinated solutions instead of cyanide for gold-sulfide leaching are considered to be the following: a high concentration of the oxidizing agent (hypochlorite ions) in solution helps to achieve a high speed of gold dissolution in the form of chloride complexes; the possibility to produce hydrochloric acid solutions that may be used for the recovering gold by electrolysis; the possibility of the processing of carbonaceous, arsenic-bearing and others kinds of refractory gold ores. The mechanism of the interaction of the modified chlorine solutions with gold-bearing sulfides (pyrite and arsenopyrite) was investigated. The efficiency of the application of chemical and electrochemical leaching method was proved. The main factor that limits the rate of gold dissolution is a high concentration of sulfate ions (SO4 2-) formed in the solution by the oxidation of sulfide minerals. The optimal parameters of chemical and electrochemical leaching method and effective ways to remove sulfate ions were determined. The method helps to increase the level of the gold recovery up to 87% from refractory ores. The intensification of leaching by chemical and electrochemical treatment opens up opportunities for the creation of modern efficient and environmentally-friendly technologies that may be applied for gold extraction from refractory gold ores.

"Gravity concentrators are evaluated either in closed or open circuit. The process developed by MIRL employs the use of neutron activated gold (/98Au) and radiation detection circuits which monitor the concentrator's product pulp streams. Concentrator recovery is determined from the ratio of the number of gold particles detected as passing into the concentrate to the total number of gold particles detected over all monitored pulp streams. This system eliminates the experimental errors introduced by sampling, sample reduction, and assaying and allows recovery to be evaluated for gold particles of specific sizes, shapes, and flatness. In addition to allowing for a more accurate and detailed recovery analysis, this process significantly reduces the time and cost required for unit evaluation when compared to other gold recovery analysis procedures. This system enjoys its greatest utility where a large number of tests are to be run in order to evaluate a concentrator over a variety of operational settings, i.e. factorial designs, and allows accurate testing of concentrators operated in closed circuit systems.IntroductionThe surge in gold prices of the late 1970s and early 1980s was followed closely by a renewed interest in gravity concentration processes, especially in concentrators claiming efficient recovery of fine placer gold. Cones, spirals, spinning bowls, jigs and cyclones are all considered potential fine gold concentrators. Fine gold, in this context, is defined as not only that gold finer than 250 um (60 mesh""), but also coarser gold, whose low shape factor may decrease its recovery by conventional, large-scale sluicing operations.Adoption of fine gold concentrators by the Alaskan placer milling industry was retarded by the lack of reliable, accurate, and reproducible data on concentrator efficiency with respect to fine placer gold recovery. In most cases, concentrator performance was based on a limited number of tests run on placer material, about which only slight knowledge of gold size and shape characteristics existed. In order to be prepared for the resurgence of interest in fine gold concentrators, which will follow the next upturn in gold prices, a detailed study of the fine gold recovery characteristics of gravity concentrators needs to be conducted."

"The current state of knowledge concerning pipeline transport of coal in water slurry form is summarized for the four categories: coal-water fuels, conventional fine coal slurries, coarse coals and stabilized mixtures of coarse and fine particles. Surface chemistry is of dominant importance for coal-water fuels and considerable progress in understanding the role of surfactants has been achieved in recent years. Little generalized research on the flow of conventional fine coal slurries has been done in the past 17years, although innumerable conceptual designs and feasibility studies have been undertaken. Coarse coal slurries are fairly well understood but the model which explains their flow requires more data to be established fully. Stabilized flow mixtures should probably obey the same model as coarse coal slurries but experimental results for stabilized mixtures have not yet been incorporated in a comprehensive theory.IntroductionPipeline transportation of coal in a water vehicle has been employed for many years in coal washeries. It has been used less frequently in hydraulic mining and thermal power station fuel supply systems. The suitability of coal for pipeline transport arises from its moderate specific gravity relative to the carrier fluid and the fact that throughputs are often large and steady over long periods of time."

The BIOX® culture, aiding liberation of arsenopyrite/pyrite occluded gold, is inhibited by thiocyanate (SCN > 1 mg/L); precluding the recycling of tailings water up-stream of the bioleaching circuit. The activated sludge tailings effluent remediation (ASTERTM) process is a biological process that was developed to facilitate water recovery and treat waste water on-site (to achieve a SCN concentration < 1 mg/L) to be recycled or disposed of. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of changing temperature and SCN loading on the SCN degradation ability of the mixed microbial population clue to seasonal temperature changes and fluctuations of SCN concentration in the waste water.

"As a monitor of the processes involved in the formation of granitoid mineral deposits the coherent group behaviour of the rare earth elements (REE) actively reflects changing fluid characteristics. For example, in the porphyry environment, magmatic-hydrothermal fluids produce potassic alteration with strong enrichment in the light rare earth element s (LREE), reflecting their high pH, low fluid/rock ratios, and the dominant role of CI- complexing in metal (i.e. Cu, Au) transport. With increasing fluid/rock ratios and decreasing pH accompanying the progressive involvement of meteoric fluids (and the production of propylitic, argillic, and phyllic alteration) anionic species such as F - and CO, 2- become important in metal (e.g. Mo, W,) transport through complexing, and their activity in the hydro thermal fluids is illustrated by mobilization of the heavy rare earth elements (HREE).The relative involvement of CI- versus F - versus CO32- in metal transport in other granite-related systems can also be monitored through REE behaviour. Hence granitoid tin-tungsten mineralization and associated greisenization typically exhibit heavy rare earth enrichment and evidence the importance of F&apos; and CO32- in metal transport. Similarly, heavy rare earth element enrichment in hydrothermal uranium deposits can be related to the transport of uranium as carbonate complexes. REE are widely accepted as powerful tools in the study of rock petrogenesis, but their use has been neglected in the investigation of mineral deposits. The recognition of the systematic variation of REE distributions in granitoid mineral deposits suggests that the application of REE geo chemistry, particularly when integrated with fluid inclusion and isotope studies, can provide (1) an effective method for identifying the physicochemical controls of metal transport and (2) a useful criterion for elucidating metal distribution."

"An interactive computer model of a dragline, windrow and spoil pile has been developed for modelling oil sands mining operations. The model is to be used in conj unction with models of other oil sands mining equipment, such as bucket-wheel excavators and reclaimers, conveyors, hoppers, bins, trucks and shovels, to study mining operations on a minute-by-minute basis. From the orebody description and mining selectivity, layers of ore and reject are determined and mined by the dragline. Reject is dumped on the pit floor; ore is either dumped on a windrow for later removal by a bucket-wheel reclaimer or directly dumped into a hopper feeding a conveyor. The model allows for the presence of pads as a dragline base, key cuts and a number of interruptions to the mining operation such as shift changes, boom checks, engineering services, repairs, delays, preventative maintenance, etc. A CRT display keeps the model operator informed about equipment status and performance. The model operator can direct the course of the simulation by issuing commands to the model at any time during the simulation.IntroductionThis paper describes an interactive computer model of a dragline, windrow and spoil pile. The model was designed by the author based on information and specifications provided by Canstar Oil Sands Ltd. The model design was implemented and tested on Petro-Canda&apos;s IBM computer system by DMR and Associates Ltd. of Calgary, Alberta.The model was designed to form three components of an oil sands mining operations model, described in reference I. Figure 1 shows the interaction of those components with the remainder of the oil sands mining model.An ""Ore/Waste Body"" data base provides information to the dragline model about the location and composition of or e and waste in the mine. The dragline model is used to simulate mining this ore/waste body, to build up spoil piles for center reject (waste) and to dump ore onto windrows or hoppers (situated over conveyors) to deliver the ore to the extraction plant. The windrow model component provides a data base which will be used by a model of a bucket-wheel reclaimer which simulates the loading of ore from the windrow on to a conveyor via a bridge."

Abstract Many investigators have been interested in developing some non-destructive method for detecting or determining the changes in physical properties in steel occurring during endurance tests or normal service life of a part which fails in fatigue. This paper presents a broad discussion of some of this work and the possibilities of developing useful test procedures based on some of the information obtained in the past. Changes in magnetic properties, electrical resistance, damping capacity, X-ray diffraction patterns, and remaining fatigue life at load different from service load have all been investigated as possible means for following the sequence of events during fatigue failure. In some special instances, tests such as these may be used to predict fatigue failure. As an in stance of practical application of the continuous determination of changes in magnetic properties during fatigue, a brief account is given of work done in non-destructive inspection of mine hoist-rope. As a result of extensive experiments and field crisis, it has been found possible to detect the beginnings of failure in a wire rope in service. The test method used will detect plastic deformation in a wire rope, no matter what its cause. There is no possibility of determining the remaining useful life of a rope by calibrating changes in magnetic properties in terms of remaining fatigue life. A change in magnetic properties at a point in a rope may indicate a decrease or increase in fatigue life, depending on the overload history of the rope. A continuing change in magnetic properties ac a point, however, does reliably indicate a developing weak point which will eventually lead to failure. The important point about any change in magnetic properties is not the magnitude of the change, but whether or not it continues.

"IntroductionThe western region of North America has long been considered a dynamic market supporting such diversified industries as lumber, agriculture, cement, and electronics. In recent years however, the region has also been the focus of a great deal of activity in the extender and filler mineral s business from companies seeking to position themselves to take advantage of the large demand for these materials both here and abroad.Extender and Filler MineralsExtender and filler mineral s include 15different products used in numerous end uses. The nine most important extenders and fillers are listed in Table I. These products range in price from under $50 a ton to over $4,000 a ton and basically represent the following three different types of minerals:Particulate products-Calcium carbonate; Kaolin; Silica.Platy minerals-Talc (Montana, Canada); Mica.Fibrous minerals-Talc (California, Eastern U.S .A.);Wollastonite.What distinguishes these products from other industrial minerals? For one thing, an important feature of extender and filler minerals is that they are used primarily in such consumer non-durable good s as paper, paint, plastics, sealants, and rubber which traditionally do not react as violently to swings in the economic cycle. In addition, these minerals are sold principally on key physical properties, usually brightness, particle size and shape, oil absorption, and hardness. As part of the physical minerals segment of industrial minerals, extenders and fillers are traditionally the most stable group and typically the most profitable. Studies by C.H. Kline over the past decade on extender and filler minerals has revealed historic average profitability (expressed as a percentage on sales) nearly double that of most other industrial mineral s.The demand for these minerals in the western region (Fig. 1), closely follow s the areas of greatest population concentration. These markets include pulp and paper, mainly in the Pacific Northwest, and paint, around Los Angeles and San Fran cisco. Other significant markets for extender and filler minerals in western North America include joint cements, carpet backing, and plastics, mainly PVC pipe."

"In recent years much work has been don e to examine alternate underground backfill support systems with the objectives of improving ground support and reducing mining costs. This report deals with the work conducted at Placer Dome Inc.’s Dome Mine to develop a high density backfill system, taking advantage of the unique properties of this fill material, to address a backlog of large open stopes to sustain stable minewide ground conditions for future generations of Dome miners.IntroductionDome Mine began its existence in 1909 with the discovery of visible gold on a dome shaped outcrop located west of Porcupine Lake in northern Ontario. The orebody beneath this outcrop has supported one of Canada’s premier gold mining operations for 80 years. Production during this time of over 46 000 000 tons of ore has resulted in the recovery of II 500 000 ounces of gold and 2 000 000 ounces of silver. Mining continues today at a production rate of 3500 tons per day, with ore coming from both underground and open pit operations.During the life of the mine, different underground mining methods have been used to extract the ore from a complex deposit consisting of single and multiple vein structures.Cut-and-fill mining was introduced in the 1930s using sand fill and later hydraulic fill for support and to provide a working platform. A total of 1 800 000 tons of sand fill and 7 300 000 tons of hydraulic fill have been placed underground in cut-and-fill stopes. Until the late 1960sshrinkage mining was used extensively, particularly in narrow, steeply dipping zones. Bulk mining with small diameter longholes was introduced about this time, to take advantage of low production costs. Longhole blasting has often been used to recover low grade ore from the walls or sills of old shrink stopes, resulting in large open stopes. Backfilling of these open holes has been restricted to smaller stopes and associated with local ground conditions.In the late 1970s it was recognized that the number of large open holes which were being generated presented serious regional and minewide stability problems for future operations. With higher gold prices, economic ore reserves were being tied up in areas adjacent to multi-level open stope complexes. To stabilize these stopes and allow access, backfilling would be required."
