Compañía Minera Antamina is a polymetallic mining complex that produces copper and zinc concentrates as primary products and molybdenum and lead/bismuth/silver concentrates as by-products. In 2007, Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) was contracted to increase SAG mill throughput by integrating and optimising blast fragmentation, crushing and grinding for the harder M4/M4A (CuZn) ores. Following the implementation of recommendations provided by Metso PTI, the SAG mill throughput increased from 2750tph to reach an average of 3600tph for the remainder of 2007. Due to continued application of mine to mill integration and optimisation philosophy, by 2010, the concentrator consistently exceeded the target of 4400tph while processing harder CuZn ores.

Recent analysis has suggested that a balanced recovery profile can improve flotation bank performance. Test work was conducted to test the balanced profile concept at the Penhorwood talc mine near Timmins, Ontario, Canada. Plant trials were devised to determine how to control the recovery profile and the resultant impact on grade and recovery in a rougher bank of four cells. Accompanying gas dispersion measurements revealed a maintenance issue with one cell that was corrected. By manipulating air and frother addition it was possible to bring the bank closer to a balanced recovery profile and the down-the-bank grade/recovery improved. Plant production showed an increased talc grade at similar yield with the balanced profile. The results provide justification for a long term plant trial.

Nuclear power reactors using zirconium alloy pressure tubes generate electricity in several countries. Such reactors are particularly important in Ontario, where CANDUs* generate about 30% of the total electricity produced in the Province. Starting with the commitment of NPD-2 in 1956, the pressure tubes of the first five CANDU reactors were made of coldworked Zircaloy-Z, an alloy of Zr and Sn. This alloy was developed by the US Navy, but the decision to use it in a cold-worked condition was based on AECL work. In 1958, the USSR published information on a new alloy, Zr-2.5 wt% Nb. The Nb promotes stabilization of the (3-phase in the material, thus presenting opportunities of exploiting metallurgically strong pressure tubes analogous to the heat-treatable cx-{3 titanium alloys. After construction of two reactors using Zr-2.5 wt% Nb in a quenched and aged condition, an extensive development program on cold-worked Zr-2.5 wt% Nb pressure tubes resulted in them becoming the reference tubes for all CANDU reactors committed since 1966. Anticipating the future needs of the domestic and export markets, AECL have pressure tubes of Zr-3.3 wt% Sn-0.8 wt% Nb-0.8 wt% Mo (Excel) in an advanced state of development. These tubes will be used in an annealed condition; our projections show that they will have improved dimensional stability over the lifetime of the reactors. These improvements result from experimental programs leading to an understanding of the relationship between microstructures and fabrication variables and effects of the environment during service in nuclear reactors.

Discussion of the laws bearing upon the economics of mining in this province at once resolves itself under three headings: (a) The rights and obligations of holders of mineral bearing lands; (b) Taxation of mines; (c) Regulation of methods adopted in financing mining operations. Titles: The law relating to titles is contained in the Mineral Act, Placer Mining Act and Coal Mines Prospecting Act. Origin: Mining laws in force in this province and elsewhere on the continent had their origin in the rule-of-thumb regulations adopted by prospectors themselves, when, far from the centres of civilization and the seats of the courts of justice, they found it necessary, for mutual protection, to fix the conditions of possession by right of location, and to prescribe the duties to be performed in order to enable the individual to maintain his ground against all comers. These regulations have been codified and added to by legislatures, until we find adequate protection and safeguard to property in the laws of this province.

"Aurubis is the leading integrated copper group and the world’s largest copper recycler. In Copper smelter Aurubis Bulgaria (Pirdop), the residual copper in the slags from Flash furnace and Converters is recovered by flotation. The slag processing comprises: pit cooling, crushing, two stages grinding (autogenous and ball) and flotation. The copper concentrate is thickened and then is filtrated by vacuum disk filter. The thickener overflow is sent to settler for additional clarification. A resent throughput increase resulted in higher solid content in the thickener overflow due to insufficient thickener area. Different scenarios to overcome the issue were evaluated (new thickener, reagents and reconstruction). An increase of the thickening area by installation of lamella modules was chosen as the most promising option. Three lamella modules (1 m3 each) were installed in conventional thickener for the test. Number of sampling campaigns was done to evaluate the effect on solid content in overflow. Parameters of the dewatering cycle were collected during sampling campaign. The products grain size distribution was defined - thickener feed, thickener overflow with and without lamella. The thickener overflow with lamella modules has 2.12 g/L less solid content. The decrease was 71.8%. According to the tests results, the whole conventional thickener was reconstructed with lamella modules. The thickener area was increased by more than 400 m2.INTRODUCTIONIn Copper smelter Aurubis Bulgaria, the copper in slag from the Flash furnace and the Converters is recovered by flotation. The scheme of slag processing is crushing, two stage grinding (autogenous and ball) and flotation. Till 2010 the grinding cycle in the plant was in two stages: the first stage was AG Mill 70×23 working with a classifier and the second stage was ball mill 3.6/5.5 working with a hydrocyclone. In 2010 a new AG Mill 65×78 with hydrocyclone was put in operation in order to increase throughput of the plant. The second stage of the grinding cycle was not changed."

MR. CHAIRMAN, Members of the C.I.M., and Friends -particularly friends, because I am not entirely a stranger in your city. I was last here some five years ago and it has given me a great deal of pleasure this evening to be able to say "Hello" again to those I had met at that time, when Bourlamaque and V al d'Or were very busy centres of intensive and successful gold exploration. My remarks this evening have to .do with Canada's Place in the Atomic Age. They will be of a general nature but I hope to tell you ?enough to whet your appetite so that you may be provoked into per-.suing the subject further. Now, atomic developments have become quite commonplace. Words like radioactivity, reactors, nuclear fission, and so on are known to everyone, even the youngsters. I re-member two or three years ago one of my office boys came to me and said "Mr. Joubin, I would like a raise." I gave the request a few seconds of serious thought and finally said "Alright, Jimmy, we'll give you a raise." However, he made no effort to leave, so after a -couple of seconds more I said, "Is there something else ?" and he said "Yes, Mr. Joubin, could you make that raise 'radioactive' to the first .of the year ?"

INTRODUCTION Eighteen years ago about half a dozen experienced prospectors moved from northern Ontario to northwest Manitoba to prospect 'greenstone' areas shown on geological maps of .parts of northern Manitoba prepared by J. B. Tyrrell, D. B. Dowling, and Wm. Mclnnes. Gold-bearing quartz was soon discovered by these men in this new field, and in succeeding years many more prospectors entered the district. A number of the pioneers are still prospecting, and since 1913 mineral deposits have been discovered each year in widely separated areas of the large district extending 150 miles eastward from the 102nd meridian and 60 miles north of latitude 54°30'. The majority of the discoveries, however, have been made near Schist, Elbow, Wekusko, and Kississing lakes. One hundred or more mineral occurrences of some merit are known, the main types being sulphide replacement bodies containing nickel-copper or copper-zinc and gold-bearing quartz veins. Some underground exploration or diamond drilling has been completed on 25 or more of the prospects. Up to the present, three ore-bodies, namely, Flin Flon, Sherritt-Gordon, and Mandy, have been proved. Of these, Flin Flon, the largest, is estimated to contain from 16,000,000 o 19,000,000 tons of copper-zinc ore carrying some gold, silver, and lead. Next in importance in regard to tonnage is Sherritt-Gordon, with a calculated reserve of nearly 5,250,000 tons of copper-zinc ore carrying less than $1.00 combined gold and silver.

"AbstractMeasurement and control systems in minerals processing plants are usually well thought out and designed. The criteria and design parameters have been interpreted correctly.However, these systems often fail to perform satisfactorily or break down altogether as a result of in-plant conditions which are unpredictable and over which the instrument systems designer has no direct control. The foresight necessary to anticipate the problems and allow for them in the systems design can only be generated by experience.This paper lists the most common of these problems and offers practical methods for their solution. Methods have been developed for processing and analyzing reflected solar radiation data obtained by Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper multispectral scanner. Spatial resolution for the Landsat series satellites is 30 meters per side per pixel. Materials on the Earth?s surface absorb or reflect different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum depending on their physical and chemical properties and, therefore, typically have characteristic spectral ?signatures?. Using these signatures, environmental parameters such as surface water and vegetation may be identified and analyzed. Principal advantages of the satellite image method for environmental monitoring include: a relatively long historic period beginning in 1985 for which information is available, the reliable numerical basis for the results, and the ability to assemble a historic environmental baseline and provide on-going monitoring for large or remote areas where standard monitoring methods may not be practical. However, because the long-term continued operation of Landsat 5 is problematic due to the age of the equipment, QuickBird and IKONOS satellite images were processed to determine if the two systems are sufficiently similar in their results to allow continuing monitoring using QuickBird data. The QuickBird satellite was launched in 2001 and collects the same visible and near infrared spectral bandwidths as Landsat 5, allowing for equivalent process algorithms for QuickBird, IKONOS, and Landsat 5 data. Spatial resolution for the QuickBird images is 2.4 meter per side, allowing for more detailed characterization of the land surface; spatial resolution for the IKONOS images is 4 meter per side. Because of several differences between the satellite systems, including degradation of the Landsat 5 sensor, it is necessary to calibrate QuickBird and IKONOS results to the Landsat results to verify similarity. Recent images from the satellite systems have been processed and results have been compared to determine the validity of comparing Landsat 5 and QuickBird/IKONOS images so that these newer data can be used reliably in the future instead of Landsat 5 data. Results from this comparison are presented in this paper and suggest that analyses for vegetation using the two satellite systems are comparable, and that little calibration is required. Results from comparison of surface water results from the two systems are less comparable and is currently being investigated by the authors.

"The property of Matachewan Consolidated Mines is in the Matachewan area on the west side of Montreal river. It lies in the western extension of the Kirkland Lake sedimentary belt. The first discovery of gold on the property was made by S. Otisse, in 1916. The property was taken over by Ventures, Limited, in 1933 and production commenced in late 1934. To date (December 31st, 1947) it has amounted to 2,308,800 tons, from which gold and silver to the value of $9,567,600 has been recovered. The mill is currently treating 650 tons of ore a day.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe deposits lie close to the south contact of a belt of sediments striking in a general east-west direction. The sediments, presumed to be of Timiskaming age, consist of light buff arkose and greywacke, containing small pebbles. The Keewatin volcanic rocks to the south are andesites or basalts with cuff and agglomerate bands developed especially near the contact with the sediments. The lavas and sediments are overlain by relatively flat-lying sediments of the Cobalt series to the south and west of the mine, but these later sediments are not involved in the mineralization under discussion. The Keewatin lavas and Timiskaming sediments are intruded by dykes and lenses of red syenite porphyry that have approximately the same strike and dip as the invaded rocks. Later diabase dykes, apparently post-ore, run in a north-south direction and cut all rocks except the Cobalt series.OREBODIESThe gold-bearing mineralization forms bodies of two different types: (1) Within the volcanic rocks irregular orebodies with limited vertical extent. These consist of a series of flat-dipping quartz stringers and adjacent lavas and /or cuffs fractured, bleached, and mineralized with pyrite and gold. They are higher grade than the second type (average about 0.16 oz. gold a ton) and formed the main source of ore for the first 5 years of production. They are described in more detail than can be given here in an article by C. H. Hopper (4). More recent work on deeper levels has failed so far to find orebodies of comparable grade, though low-grade mineralization of a similar type does occur on the projected rake of the main group of the 'basalt type' of orebodies."

Abstract - The West Meliadine area is underlain by structurally interleaved panels of mafic and minor ultramafic metavolcanic rocks and metasedimentary rocks that occur along the northern margin of the Neoarchean Rankin Inlet greenstone belt. Three structural and metamorphic domains are recognized: (1) the easterly Wesmeg domain; (2) the central Barracuda-Ridge domain; and (3) the westerly Peter Lake domain. The Wesmeg domain is characterized by a series of southeast-trending, north-dipping, foliation-parallel panels of greenschist facies mafic metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks. The Barracuda-Ridge domain is comprised of greenschist to amphibolite facies mafic metavolcanic rocks that define an east-northeast-trending structural grain. The Peter Lake domain consists of amphibolite facies mafic metavolcanic rocks and minor metasedimentary rocks intruded by a monzonite pluton. West Meliadine hosts the economically significant Wesmeg gold deposits, as well as other important gold showings across the Barracuda-Ridge and Peter Lake domains. The geological setting of the Wesmeg gold deposits resembles that of a break or fault zone. The Pyke Break is a major geophysical discontinuity (>65-km strike length) and is the first-order structural control on gold mineralization at West Meliadine. It is several kilometers wide and characterized by polyphase deformation and shear zone development accompanied by lode-gold mineralization. In general, gold concentration is related to quartz and iron-carbonate veining, iron sulfides (mainly arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite), and accompanying silicate alteration minerals that overprint favorable chemical and structural traps late in the history of deformation.

Veins at St. Lawrence near the tip of the Burin Peninsula in southeast New/ oundland have been the major Canadian source of fluorspar. Some 2.8 million tonnes were shipped during the period 1933-1977, mostly from five of the more than forty veir.s known. Most of the veins occur in granite. individual veins may be several km in length, comprising a number of mineable lenses up to 760 m long and 25 111 thick. Fluorite content averages about 50 per cent, but may exceed 90 per cent locally. Quartz, calcite, barite and a few sulphides are the other vein constituents. Jn recent years, gravity concentrates were shipped to a flotation plant at Arvida, Quebec, where the fluorspar concentrate was used as a flux in the making of alum in um. Competition f rom Mexican fluorspar was a major factor in the closure of the mines. Ample reserves are available should economic conditions improve.

Direct chill (DC) cast ingot plates of 2xxx alloys have been increasingly used for large mold applications in the plastics and automotive industries. A novel heat treatment practice for Al-3%Cu-1%Mg DC cast ingot plates has been developed, involving solution treatment, furnace cooling to the desired aging temperature and holding for appropriate time at the aging temperature. The mechanical properties of the plates were studied for different combinations of aging temperature and time, using hardness measurements and tensile testing. The evolution of the strengthening precipitates was investigated under different cooling rates corresponding to cold water quenching, still-air cooling and furnace cooling, using electrical conductivity measurements. The results showed that by applying the novel heat treatment, the cast ingot plates could provide a wide range of combinations of strength and ductility satisfying the design specifications of large molds. This, in turn, offers a practical solution for the fabrication of extremely large DC cast plates combining between good mechanical properties and low levels of residual stress using the shortest possible heat treating cycle.

"Mining properties are becoming increasingly remote, a challenging situation for operating and maintaining equipment. Logistics of transporting workers and materials can be alleviated by having timely, accurate information of equipment location and operating condition, and by automating some activities. This paper discusses an infrastructure for remote operations, with strategies for communicating different types of data, and a design method so that systems can interact with either an operator or another system. A remotely operated excavator prototype is described, with on-board performance and diagnostic monitoring systems now used on production equipment. IntroductionSyncrude Canada Ltd. operates an openpit oil sands mine near Fort McMurray, Alberta. For twenty years, draglines and bucketwheel reclaimers have fed conveyors that transport dry oil sand to an extraction and upgrading plant. In converting to a truck and shovel operation, Syncrude has developed slurry pipelines and bitumen froth pumping to allow more remote leases to be mined more than 30 km from the base plant.There are organizational and resourcing challenges in operating and maintaining equipment in three nearby, but separate, mines. The logistics of transporting workers and materials to production and support equipment become more difficult, and operations and maintenance personnel and facilities become more distributed. Supervising mine operations will rely even more on having timely, accurate information about equipment location and operational status.Syncrude is typical of an open-pit operation. Voice communications are the preferred way to exchange information for making immediate decisions about operations and maintenance. A large number of narrowband FM broadcast radio channels keep teams of miners working together. Haul truck drivers, shovel operators, and dispatchers talk on one channel while maintainers coordinate activities with the control tower on another. Cellular phones have become popular for supervisors who have to talk with planners and engineers in offices without radios."

Two pumping tests in the Chilson Member of the lower Lakota Formation were completed at nearly the same location in 1979 and 2008. The 1979 test consisted of a pumping well and several surrounding observation wells penetrating the full 55-m thickness of the aquifer. The 2008 test consisted of a pumping well and three surrounding observation wells screened over 10 m in one of the known uranium ore horizons in the lower portion of the Lakota penetrated only about 3 meters of the more than 55-m thick lower Lakota aquifer. The average transmissivity and storativity values determined from the 1979 tests were 17.6 m2/day and 1.8 x 10-4, respectively. Comparing median transmissivity of 13.9 m2/day and storativity of 1.2 x 10-4 determined in the 2008 test to the 1979 test, the new aquifer parameters for the lower Lakota are respectively about 80 and 70 percent of the 1979 results. Because transmissivity and storativity depend on aquifer thickness, comparing the results suggests that there may be some scaling effect between the tests due to the differing lengths of screened intervals. However, the effect cannot be predicted by calculations such as relative screen lengths or open intervals to the formation, or sandstone versus shale thicknesses on geophysical logs. The scaling effect is attributed to partial disconnection between the lower and upper portions of the Lakota Formation aquifer by locally continuous shale interbeds. Suggestions to resolve this scaling issue are presented.

Based upon research findings from several countries, the combination of microwave and mechanical means to break hard rock holds promise for the future. To achieve this goal, it is essential to understand the laws governing strength reduction of hard rock, such as granite, induced by microwave irradiation. Two aspects to consider are: 1) laws associated with the tensile strength of hard rock after microwave irradiation and 2) the sensitivity of different types of rock strengths to microwave energy. In this study, granite with a range of tensile strengths was exposed to microwaves for various time periods to compare the response of rocks with different strength values exposed to the same microwave irradiation. In addition, a method based on hotspots is presented to explain the mechanism by which granite strength is reduced by microwave irradiation. Granite extracted from Qinling Mountain in Shaanxi Province, China is used in the research. ?50 × 50 mm cylindrical granite specimens were exposed to microwaves at a specific power level. The strength values of the heated granite specimens were compared with those of unheated specimens. Through the comparison and analyses, relationships were determined between 1) reduction in granite strength and microwave irradiation time period, and 2) granite strength and sensitivity to a given energy of microwave irradiation. Finally, a mechanism to explain the experimental results is proposed. Research findings will aid in the design of a microwave + machine rock-breaking system for use in rock breakage in underground mines at depth and for future mine applications on earth and other planets. In addition, the experimental approach could be used to test other rock types to further our understanding of rock damage induced by microwave irradiation.

Electrorefining of low-grade copper alloys containing various amounts of nickel, lead, antimony, bismuth, arsenic, selenium, silver, and gold in sulfamic acid media was demonstrated. The copper concentration of the alloys used as an anode was 70–90 wt%. The electrolyte contained 100 g L-1 of free sulfamic acid and 40 g L-1 of cupric ion. Galvanostatic electrolysis was conducted at 200–300 A m-2 in the electrolyte using a low-grade copper alloy anode and a stainless steel cathode at 25C. The terminal voltage was approximately 0.8 V at the start of the electrolysis, although it increased periodically to approximately 2.0 V and then shortly returned to its initial value. Nickel, lead, and arsenic from the anode dissolved in the electrolyte and were removed. Antimony, bismuth, selenium, and silver were removed as solids. Consequently, a dense copper cathode was obtained, and the concentration of copper was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectrometry to be 99.82–99.99 wt%. INTRODUCTION Electrorefining of copper is conventionally carried out in a sulfuric acid electrolyte using crude copper assaying at 99.5 wt% Cu as the anode (Biswas & Davenport, 1994). Elements more noble than copper do not react anodically, and consequently, they are distributed in anode slimes. Elements less noble than copper dissolve from the anode. Nickel and arsenic are stabilized as aqueous species. Lead, antimony, and bismuth react with water, sulfuric acid, or arsenic acid to form barely soluble compounds; thus, they are distributed in anode slimes. An emerging issue in the electrolytic refining of copper is an increase of impurities in crude copper used as the anode (Moats et al., 2013). This is due to an increase in the content of impurities in copper concentrates as well as an increase in the types of secondary copper feedstocks (e.g., E-Scraps, automotive shredder residues, and smelting residues) treated in the copper pyrometallurgical process. An extreme case is a copper smelter that does not use copper concentrates as feedstocks. In such a process, copper-bearing feedstocks are smelted in a top submerged lance furnace to prepare low-grade copper alloys assaying at 80– 90 wt% Cu (Sekimoto et al., 2013). Such low-grade copper is not acceptable as an anode in the conventional copper electrolytic refining process because it is easily passivated during electrolysis. Consequently, electrolytic copper is produced by leaching the atomized low-grade copper in a sulfuric acid solution with oxygen, followed by electrowinning. However, electrowinning should be avoided whenever possible because the electrical energy consumed in electrowinning is 5–10 times higher than that consumed in electrorefining. "Gold producers invest significant effort in mining, processing, and creating an intermediate gold doré product. Nonetheless, equal effort should be extended to the final handling and processing of the doré bar, and managing the high-purity gold produced at the fine-gold toll refiner. This detailed attention to bullion handling and refining provides rigor and confidence that the mine site is achieving, through fair and controlled methodology, the most appropriate value for the final product. With the above in mind, the following study explores the importance of preparing a set of site best-practices for bullion handling and specifically, detailing the peculiarities of sampling methodologies and the impact on assays.INTRODUCTION Gold and silver handling practices are common place at mine sites and refineries. The practices include but are not limited to smelting, ingot casting, weighing practices, and secure transportation. Proper handling and processing of the bullion material ensures that the mine site is achieving the true value of the final product. Various handling aspects can critically impact the perceived value of the bullion. A few of these particulars include weight tracking, scale recertification and calibration, refining and melting practices, melt temperature measurement, sampling, pouring, bar cleaning, furnace technology and crucible selection, and assaying. Nevertheless, this report discusses and focuses on the importance of proper sampling and molten-metal temperature measurement and their potential impact on the final doré bar value. Refining or re-melting operations achieve a proper measure of the precious metal content of its bullion when the sample accurately represents the whole bar. At first this task appears seemly straightforward, however, taking a representative sample can be challenging and is also one of the most important tasks for valuing gold during the settlement stage at the precious metal refinery. Various bullion sampling methodologies exist; including: dip sampling, granulation, drilling, cutting, and vacuum pin sampling. The Royal Canadian Mint (2009) indicated in their technical review of refinery operations that pin sampling is one of the best methods for cases where representative sampling and accuracy are required, e.g. to determine the payable metal content. Pin sampling consists of inserting a sealed glass vacuum tube (Figure 1) into the molten metal; when the molten metal contacts a purposely-designed weak portion of the glass, the seal breaks and the metal is suctioned into the hollow centre (Figure 2)."
