"For the last 700years of recorded economic history, man has been subjected to alternating inflationary and deflationary patterns. Through this period of time, a severe deflationary pattern has developed approximately every 55 years, creating 12recordable occurrences. Through the last two centuries, this severe deflationary phenomenon has come to be known as a depression. As these depressions have repeated themselves regularly, they are cyclic. This in turn leads to the question of whether the 13th cycle will also repeat itself in the form of a depression. As this cycle is now 51 years old, we must consider the possibility at about 1984.In analyzing a 700-year record of consumer prices in Southern England, the 55-year cycle appears to vary in shape and intensity. This varying phenomenon is due to the effect of longer cycles upon which each one ""rides "". Because each cycle effectively rides on the next largest, which in turn rides on the next largest and so on, the combined measured effect of all cycles together at any point in time is always unique. This means that anyone cycle can never repeat itself in an exact identical manner. The combined effect therefore is what we observe in the form of prices and, as cycles interact, variations in deflation are produced . The ""science"" of economics attempts to quantify and develop theory on situations which are never identical and hence can be conservatively classified as a useless predictive tool.This means that more unconventional approaches may be required to predict our economic future. In looking at previous depression cycles, it is possible to recognize similarities in human behaviour patterns and hence the resulting economic movements. These behaviour patterns create major events or influencing factors which set the scene for a major deflationary condition. The way in which these factors occur, however, is not predictable. As more and more of these similar events are identified in each cycle, we can increase our confidence on the probability of the last event occurring (a depression). By also unravelling the set of larger cycles, we can determine the potential combined effect at any point in the future.This paper presents a system of cycles ranging from 800 years to 3 years which appear to operate in our economic system. By so doing, a long-term projection into the next century can be made. Finally, the paper deals with the main controlling similarities within the depression cycle, to show that a comparison with our current cycle implies that a major deflationary collapse in the mid 1980's is virtualy inevitable."

Reagents to second rougher and scavengers are seldom adjusted as feed to this section has a maximum variation of about 0.2'~ Cu.Power – Maintenance and Space Requirement :Our total power consumption for 3,400 T.P,D. flotation circuit for operation and air supply is 280 H.P. Previous power drawn using conventional cells was 400 H.P. at 2,000 T.P.D.Total maintenance costs for flotation circuit has averaged $1,100.00 per year for the 3 years of operation, this cost should remain constant.Floor space required for cells and walkways is 2,000 sq.ft.

"The practical determination of optimum stope geometry has, until recently, been an art relying primarily on experience at a given operation. Due to the complex and variable nature of rock masses in situ, stopes are often designed either very conservatively, resulting in excess development, or non-conservative resulting in excessive dilution and, in some cases, in loss of ore reserves.The Geomechanics group of the Mining Technology Division, Centre de Recherche Noranda, uses a combination numerical modelling and empirical design techniques to optimize allowable stope geometries. The above methodology allows the optim ization of stope geometry for varying rockmass classifications within an operation or between different operations. Such techniques require the development of a thorough geotechnical database at each operation and are best used when calibrated to the specific operation through back analysis.This paper discusses the above optimization techniques in light of specific examples from the Noranda Group. The design methods, limitations and results are discussed.INTRODUCTIONMine design has traditionally referred to production planning, general facility layout, (i.e. ore passes, crusher stations, main haulage drifts, etc.) and ventilation design. The dimensioning and sequencing of the stopes and pillars, however, has been almost solely based on trial and error and precedent practice.More recently, numerical stress analysis has received much more attention as part of the design process. It is common now at many operations to look at the effect of proposed stope layouts and sequences on stress redistribution through the surrounding mine workings. Through calibration of actual stope and pillar behaviour in situ, one can then relate the model predictions to support requirements, safety problems, etc."

"Canadian experience in industrial modeling of grinding, classification, and flotation kinetics was applied at the Sarcheshmeh copper mine, which processes 40,000 t/d of ore at 0.9 % Cu, in an effort to improve capacity and metallurgical performance. Mcivor's functional performance analysis was applied to ball mill cyclone circuits to maximize circuit capacity. Plitt's cyclone model was applied to predict how apex wear would affect classification performance, as part of a predictive maintenance program whereby the optimum wear period is determined for cast iron apexes. The flotation flowsheet was improved using Agar's optimization criteria. The impact of these technologies has been nothing short of spectacular, with an improved capacity of 1 S to 20""/o, and increased recoveries.1-IntroductionThe Sarcheshmeh copper ore body, which may rank as third or fourth largest in the world, contains 1 billion tonnes averaging 0.90 % copper and 0.03 % molybdenum. It is located southeast of Iran and has been processing 40,000 t/d of ore since 1982. The mine produces 100,000 tonnes of copper and 2,200 tonnes of molybdenum concentrate per year. After three stages of crushing, the ore with a Fso of 12. 7 mm is fed to 8 parallel ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones to produce a product 70""/o finer than 7 S microns. The concentrate of the first stage of flotation is reground and the tailings constitute the main component of the plant final tailings. A concentrate with an average grade of 31 % Cu is obtained after cleaning and re-cleaning stages. Total recovery of the plant varies between 83 and 87 % depending on the operating conditions and ore type.To improve the overall performance of the plant, it was first decided to evaluate the performance of grinding, classification and flotation. Measures were then taken to improve performance using the following criteria: (i) The improvements should be of the types that have resulted in significant improvements in other plants (e.g. Shannon et al, 1993); and (ii) The proposed improvements must be achievable with the manual operation presently used at Sarcheshmeh. The outcome of this study could also help in making decisions on the implementation of automatic control systems in the Sarcheshmeh copper mine."

"Graphite is one of the most versatile of non-metallic minerals because of its diversified properties, for example: it is unctuous; it marks readily; burns slowly; is almost chemically inert; is flexible over a large temperature range; is a good conductor of heat and electricity; is hydrophobic; has a negative temperature coefficient of resistivity; has excellent weathering properties; tends to emulsify with water-in-oil; is readily soluble in iron; and after oxidative treatment, can exfoliate like vermiculite. These properties give rise to its major uses in lubrication, refractories, marking instruments, electrical products and paints.Flake graphite is the variety which commonly occurs in Canada; the provinces of Ontario and Quebec contain the deposits of economic significance, although graphite occurs in other provinces. The beneficiation of graphite has been the subject of many investigations at CANMET, thus reflecting graphite 's importance as an industrial mineral. Thirty-eight studies relating to various aspects of beneficiation were conducted between 1918and 1989anda review of some of the more important studies is presented. The information includes mineralogy, beneficiation methods and results; flotation parameters and reagent concentration data are presented in tabular form. By so arranging the principal data, the research worker and production metallurgist will be assisted in the evaluation of graphite ores from a variety of origins."

To properly understand industrial conditions in Spain it is necessary to consider the early history of the country. Spain is very backward in many lines. They use the sickle for cutting grain, and plows for cultivating the land, which resemble those of Biblical days. In the great mining camp at Bilbao only one steam-shovel is in use, although about two hundred million tons of ore has been produced, and this almost entirely from open cuts. It is the lack of industrial development, such as is found in many other countries, which permits large mining enterprises to be controlled almost entirely by foreign capital, although Spain is such an old country, and which permits mines opened in the days of the Phoenicians to still operate. Such deposits in America would be exhausted in a comparatively few years. The Phoenicians are supposed to have reached Spain about 1100 B.C. and to have worked some of the properties in the Rio Tinto district. The Carthagenians invaded the country about 236 B.C., and they were driven out about 205 B.C. by the Romans. The Romans ruled until 483 A.D., when they were overthrown by the Visigoths. Then, about 711 A.D., the Moors from Africa became prominent and they were finally expelled by the Spaniards in 1492. Spanish power reached its zenith under Phillip II, during the latter half of the 16th century, and since the close of that century the country has lost its prominent place among the nations. There are some evidences of revival in the development of good roads, the construction of a satisfactory network of railways, and the building of magnificent thoroughfares through the capital city, Madrid.

"The Aldermac deposit and associated prospects occur in the Noranda Archean volcanic centre of the Abitibi greenstone belt. Over two million tons of are grading 1.65% copper, with minor gold and silver, were mined between 1933 and 1943. The deposit has features in common with the Vauze and Millenbach mines in the same district.Recent detailed mapping, geochemistry and petrography combined with data from former diamond drilling and mining operations permit a re-interpretation of the Aldermac area. The orebodies and spatially related sulphidic zones are con eluded to be volcanogenic.The host rocks are a chemically bimodal suite of mafic and rhyolitic flows, volcaniclastics and related subvolcanic intrusions. Massive sulphide lenses are spatially related to a quartz-feldspar- phyric rhyolite dome and siliceous, volcanic-exhalative sedimentary rocks, The succession is cut by gabbro and syenite, related to later stages of volcanism, and by post Kenoran diabase dykes. Regional metamorphism attained the low greenschist facies, but the rocks lack penetrative deformation.Hydrothermal alteration is primarily an intense silicification of mafic volcanic rock s enveloping, or lying below, sulphidic zones. Chlorite and sericite alteration zones, including dalmatianite, are more locally developed and have a closer spatial relation to mineralization, as do epidote, calcite and calcic garnet.The structure is complex and cannot be explained by isoclinals folding; rather it reflects concurrent faulting, and extrusive and intrusive activity. Fault blocks were rotated and exhibit opposed facing; the original selling was possibly a submarine graben.Sulphidic zones occur within mafic and felsic volcanic rocks and at the interface between the two; there is thus potential for discovery throughout the known stratigraphic succession. Exploration conducted according to a volcanogenic model is advisable, particularly in the light of recent discoveries in similar rocks of the Amulet area."

The operation of grinding mills in an ore processing circuit is supported by monitoring the input and output variables. These can include the feed ore size distributions, ore feed and water addition rates. The outputs can include the discharge undersize density, oversize tonnage rate and the P80 of the discharge. The grinding mill performance is judged by the power draw, recycle rates and discharge grind size. Conditions inside the mill are inferred from loads cells or bearing pressures and past histories. An overall noise value is sometimes used to evaluate the load as well as the occurrence of excessive impacting of steel balls onto the liners/lifters of the mill. This paper presents results of the internal behaviour of a mill using non-contact stationary microphones located close to the mill outer shell (Pax, 2012). The noise generated by a mill can be attributed to a number of events that occur inside these mills and suitably analysed can provide real-time determinations of in-mill behaviour and can provide powerful insights into the operation of the primary comminution tumbling mills. The acoustically determined signals including a specific 'steel' signal, water hold-up, integrated area together with a classification of impact events. Specific results from case studies will show information of the trajectories inside a mill, steel to rock ratio as well as rheology effects. By incorporating a self-consistent understanding methodology for the in-mill processes from an array of microphones, the information can be used to diagnose the dynamic conditions inside a mill.

"Several mineralogical investigations have revealed the composition of modified kimberlites and the mud generated during treatment of diamonds, which contains up to 50% clay minerals (e.g., talc, talcsaponite, chlorite-saponite, Na-saponite) and X-ray amorphous phase. We investigated the composition of the natural diamond surface in relation to the diagnosed minerals and established the sequence and conditions for mineral formation on the crystal surface under kimberlite processing conditions. This article suggests a method to destroy and further dissolve minerals on the crystal surfaces using water system electrolysis products, which makes it possible to restore the diamond hydrophobic properties. The application of chemically treated water in the foam separation cycle under the conditions of high recovery of diamonds made it possible to increase the content of the factory concentrate by 8.0%.INTRODUCTIONThe high content of the modified minerals in the kimberlite ore results in the formation of hydrophilic slicks on the surface of the crystals which decreases the diamond’s hydrophobic properties and increases the losses thereof in the process of grease and foam separation to 20-30% (Kurenkov, 1957; Chanturiya et al., 1998, 1999, 2005; Duikarev et al., 2000).The previous researches have revealed the fact that the prospective way of solving the problem of intensity of mineral impurities formation on the surface of the crystals and the increase of concentration parameters is reached due to application of physical and chemical stimulation techniques on the solid and liquid pulp (Stricland-Constable, 1971; “Improvement of the technology…”, 2006; Makarskii, Adodin & Tarasova, 2011; Chanturiya, Dvoychenkova & Trofimova, 2012). Due to detrimental effects of cyanidation process on the environment in gold industry, application of cyanide alternatives such as thiourea are being highly considered in recent projects. In this study, the extraction of gold from poly metal ore, using thiourea was precisely investigated. The representative sample contained 2.5 ppm Au and 160 ppm Ag. The sample was categorized as oxide gold ore, because the main part of its pyrite was changed to iron oxide and hydroxide such as goethite and lepidocrosite. According to mineralogy, the main gangue mineral was quartz. It shows that gold grains are free and interlocked with quartz matrix. Also, the presence of a high amount of silver in free and sulfide forms and also the low content of other sulfide minerals such as base metal sulfides is a remarkable point of these studies. In the gold extraction process with thiourea, there are several parameters that affect the rate of gold dissolution such as concentrations of thiourea as a gold lixiviant and ferric sulfate as an oxidant, pH and size fraction of feed and leaching time. The influence of these parameters on the gold dissolution rate were investigated and optimized. The results showed that the concentration of thiourea is the most influential parameter which could increase the gold recovery to 71% (at 10 g/kg sample). The optimal amount of ferric sulfate was determined as 6 g/kg sample. Also, the optimal levels of size fraction of feed and pH of solution were 88% under 75 micron and 2 as acidity; respectively. Leaching time was 6 hrs. In addition, this sample was leached with cyanide and the optimized values of size fraction of d88=75 microns, pH=10.45, 2500 ppm of sodium cyanide with time leaching of 24 hours were concluded for maximum recovery of gold in solution. Finally, the results of cyanidation tests were compared to the thiourea dissolution after optimizing all affected parameters in cyanidation process.

"The toxicity of arsenic is well known and documented; however, the presence of arsenic in copper electrorefining anodes and electrolytes is critically necessary to produce high-quality cathode. Arsenic as well as antimony and bismuth concentrations vary relative to their concentration in the anode copper received from the smelter. The behaviour and benefits of arsenic in copper electrorefining and the detrimental effects of antimony and bismuth on cathode quality and tankhouse performance are discussed. This will include the minimization and mitigation of problems associated with arsenic, antimony, and bismuth—including cathode contamination, floating slimes, scaling, and anode passivation.RÉSUMÉ La toxicité de l’arsenic est bien connue et documentée; toutefois, la présence d’arsenic dans les anodes de l’électroaffinage du cuivre et dans les électrolytes est d’une nécessité critique pour produire une cathode de grande qualité. Les concentrations en arsenic, ainsi qu’en antimoine et en bismuth varient selon leur concentration dans l’anode de cuivre reçue de la fonderie. Le comportement et les avantages de l’arsenic dans l’électroaffinage du cuivre et les effets indésirables de l’antimoine et du bismuth sur la qualité de la cathode et le rendement des cuves d’électrolyse sont discutés. WE should indeed feel proud and satisfied with the accomplishments of our great mining and metallurgical. industries during the past quarter of a century, for they have vastly exceeded those of any previous period of like duration. 1 feel that Canadians, and particularly those in the mining industry, should know more concerning the important role our industry will be called upon to play in the present war. Our Empire metals will be an outstanding factor in this conflict. Every man connected with the industry, from the lowest paid labourer to the highest official, can feel proud that his every effort results in more and more production of those metals which will help to give the Empire supremacy. He can feel assured that, by sticking to his job and by putting his whole heart into his work, he is making a contribution towards winning the terrible struggle in which our Empire and our gallant French allies are engaged. These two great peoples will have ro bear the brunt of the task of ridding the world of the menace of those who would set up force. and might in the place of right and justice in the settlement of international affairs. As the present European crisis developed, it became evident that they, alone, would have to accept the challenge and fight the enemies of Democracy to ensure the survival of the small nations of Europe and, indeed, of the great democratic powers themselves. The acquisitive eye of the German leaders had looked far ahead and they had realized that the eastern European states, already reeming with population, were no solution to Germany's space problem; but they thought that these states could be gobbled up one by one, each in turn strengthening Germany's might until it could successfully challenge France and England. No glimmer of doubt dimmed their vision. The two great democracies once subdued, they could proceed to seize Canada and the United States. This clone, they would have an abundance of room to expand, as well as those resources-grain, timber, cotton, nickel, iron, lead, zinc, copper, gold, silver, sulphur, oil-which German statesmen have always coveted. Von Ribbentrop, von Alvensleben, Bernstorff, and many others have made exhaustive studies of our resources. German rulers had been told that the French would not fight and that the British could not. They knew of the rust on the British war machine. There was no cloud in the sky; their fond dream was at last robe fulfilled.

The second part continues with discussions of surveys based on leakage halos, zonation of elements, stable and radioactive isotopic distributions, geothermometric, geobarometric, thermolumin escent, pedochemical, hydrochemical, atmochemical and biogeochemical methods. A selected bibliography follows the second part of the paper.ABSTRACTAreal (two-dimensional) geochemical surveys, based mainly on secondary dispersion halos and trains in media such as surface waters, soils and drainage sediments, have proven particularly successful in recent years and have greatly assisted in the discovery of a large number of varied mineral deposits. Three-dimensional surveys based on primary halos and leakage halos have received relatively little attention by research organizations and the mineral industry. Such surveys offer many novel approaches for discovering blind mineral deposits deeply buried below overburden or within their host bedrocks. This paper reviews detailed methods for the discovery of blind mineral deposits based on sampling rocks (lithochemical methods), soils and other types of overburden (pedochemical methods), waters (hydrochemical methods), gases (atmochemical methods) and biological materials (biogeochemical methods) . All are applicable to the discovery of blind deposits; the efficacy of each or in combination depends essentially on the type of mineralization, the extent of the development of the primary and secondary dispersion halos, and the finances available for sampling techniques employing overburden drilling, bedrock drilling, and sophisticated water, gas and vegetation collection."

In 1984 and 1985, two 7.6m diameter TBM tunnels were driven from the Donkin-Morien peninsula in Nova Scotia to access the Harbour coal seam. The design of the ground support was based on identifying zones of rock failure through the application of the Hoek Brown failure criterion and the early use of finite element analyses. In 1992, the mining project was abandoned and the tunnels allowed to flood. Monitoring data from the tunnel was subsequently used as a case study in the development of the concepts of brittle rock behaviour. In 2007, the tunnels were pumped out as part of a feasibility study into the reintroduction of longwall mining into the coalfield. There is a good match between observations of the collapse zones in the roof and sides of the tunnel and a simple elastic analysis using brittle parameters, a spalling limit of 5, and a low independent shear modulus. The brittle analyses form the basis of the design for the resupport of the tunnels.

"World metallurgical coal imports totalled 110million tonnes in 1978. Of this amount, Japan imported 50 million tonnes, making it by far the largest and most important coking coal market . British Columbia and Alberta exported 12.0 million tonnes of coking coal in 1978, or 11% of the world total. Virtually all of these exports were directed to Japan, making up 22% of total imports.Some observers have suggested that because Japan is almost the exclusive buyer of British Columbia and Alberta metallurgical coal, the benefits of the coal trade may be primarily on the side of the powerful Japanese buyers. Buttressing this suspicion is the fact that Japanese trading companies have taken substantial equity positions in B.C. coal mines, thus presenting the possibility of non-arms-Iength transfer arrangements. There is then at least some evidence to support the hypothesis that Canada's western coal producers receive prices that are less than would prevail in a more competitive market; that is, that they are exploited.This paper produces evidence that Canada's coals are not underpriced in respect to U.S. and world markets. The conclusion is drawn that British Columbia and Alberta metallurgical coals receive prices that are equal to prices known to be competitively determined. This conclusion follows an in-depth analysis of prices, coal qualities and the economic characteristics of all major coals traded in the Japanese market. A by-product of the analysis is an equation capable of predicting the value of any metallurgical coal sold to Japanese buyers, or, for that matter, any buyer. Hopefully, this can be of some use to coal producers in developing their marketing strategies."

Cemented rockfill (CRF) is a mixture of rock aggregate and binder slurry. It is a stiff backfill, it is fast curing, its operation is simple, placement rate is reasonably high and no drainage is required. The main demerit of CRF is failure of exposed faces causing ore dilution, which can be associated with the fill placement method. This paper discusses the effects of two placement methods being practiced by mines and numerical modelling is used as a tool to evaluate stability of the backfill column. In the first method, practiced in longitudinal retreat mining of a narrow vein deposit, the rockfill is hauled and dumped into the stope with a LHD scooptram. Once dumped, cement slurry is sprayed into the stope. In the second method, a raise situated centrally above the mined stope is used to convey already mixed CRF into the stope. Stopes are mined out transversely in primary and secondary blocks in a sublevel stoping system. Problems of poor mixing in combination with both placement methods are discussed. The two backfill placement methods are analyzed for blast induced vibration damage using the dynamic Flac3D modelling technique accounting for rock mass and fill damping characteristics, and a pressure wave is used to simulate the blast vibrations. Fill heterogeneity has also been considered for the two cases and results are compared.

A commercial titanium alloy Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo has been gas nitrided in this work, in pure nitrogen atmosphere in order to improve its surface properties. The nitriding was performed at two different temperatures, 950 and 1050°C, and for different periods of time. The influence of the initial surface roughness on the diffusion process and on the surface properties of this material was studied. The influence of the processing parameters of gas nitriding on the surface roughness, phase modifications and the microstructure of the nitrided layers has been analyzed using atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. Microhardness profiles were obtained on cross-sections of the samples after gas nitriding applying a Knoop indenter.

An understanding of groundwater flow is essential for many aspects of mining. This is especially true for the process of shaft sinking through the sandstones of the Manitou Falls Group in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan. Experience has shown that the hydraulic conductivities of these sandstones can be relatively high, especially in zones containing natural fractures. To develop a better understanding of the inflow potential into a shaft, a laboratory testing program was undertaken to investigate the hydraulic conductivity of fracture core samples from the Manitou Falls Group. This program involved the measurement of hydraulic conductivities under steady-state flow conditions, while cycling the effective confining pressure across a span that is representative of in-situ conditions. The change in fracture aperture was simultaneously recorded at each confining stress level. It was found that existing relationships relating aperture and flow did not accurately capture the behavior of the samples tested. The effects of fracture staining and infilling were also investigated, and were found to have a notable impact on the hydraulic conductivity.

Kansanshi Copper Smelter commenced operation in March 2015. The smelter features four Peirce- Smith Converters (PSCs) operated in a three hot, two blowing configuration. This paper describes some of the process automation and design features implemented to maximize operational and environmental performance. To ensure that the converters were easy to operate, efficient, and were protected in emergency situations such as power failures or loss of tuyere air supply a significant focus was placed on automated sequences initiated by “one button” operator commands or otherwise automatically by the Distributed Control System (DCS). Examples include: main converter roll-in and roll-out sequences; emergency roll-out in the event of power failure; and the charging sequences for reagents (silica and reverts). Other automated features configured for the PSCs were specifically aimed at maximizing converter capacity and reducing the environmental impact from fugitive emissions. These features include: “one button” in-stack charging; automated restriction of blowing rate based on the available acid plant capacity; and fully-automated control logic for the Secondary Ventilation System. In-stack charging allows anode furnace oxide slag to be poured into the PSCs while the converters are still blowing and still sending off-gas to the acid plant. PSC Secondary Ventilation control logic was configured to require minimum input from the operators while ensuring maximum utilization of the available draft from the ventilation system. Highly automated PSC controls contribute to high utilization, averaging 41.2 in-stack hours per day. INTRODUCTION Kansanshi Copper Smelter (KCS) is located near Solwezi at Kansanshi copper mine in Zambia's Northwestern province. The smelter treats concentrate produced at Kansanshi mine as well as Sentinel mine located 150 km west of Solwezi. Four Peirce-Smith Converters (PSCs) are installed at KCS. The nominal capacity of each converter is to treat 350 t of copper matte and produce up to 250 t of blister copper per batch. Normally three PSCs are hot, with two able to operate (produce off-gas), and the third converter on hot standby. The fourth converter is normally under cold repairs. The blister charge size is relatively low for the matte charged due to the unavailability of tank house or other high copper scrap.
