The Koongarra uranium deposit was discovered in August 1970 by Noranda Australia Limited. Denison Mines Limited acquired the rights of ownership in October 1980 and has continued the 'struggle' to bring the proposed mine, containing approximately 13 300 tonnes of U308 of Indicated ore and having a value of $1 billion (1984 dollars), into operation. During the 14 years that have passed, the owners have found it necessary to deal with numerous Federal, State and Territory government departments, aboriginal representatives, handle thousands of communications, attend and convene countless meetings and spend millions of dollars. This paper addresses the history, the requirements, the problems and the costs to date for what - no return.

Copper-gold deposits associated with iron oxide rich rocks (ironstones) form a distinctive and significant ore association which occurs widely, but not exclusively, in the Proterozoic. The ironstone association is geochemically distinct from the BIF-hosted gold association (Phillips and Groves, 1983). Not only is the former association higher in its copper and commonly uranium, FEE, ¦bismuth, molybdenum contents, but also the ironstones in many cases do not originate as chemical sediments. Although both associations form in metamorphic environs, they reflect differing tectonostratigraphic settings and with consequent differences in ore-forming fluids and ore-forming mechanisms. This paper discusses the nature and origin of the ironstone-related copper-gold association, with particular reference to the Tennant Creek district in northern Australia, and emphasises the two stage origin of mineralisation. The genetic model developed has significant implications for other ore-bearing environments.

MARTIN) IN PRESENTING THE CERTIFICATE TO SIR MAURICE MAWBY, C.B.E.Members of The Institute, distinguished guests of which there are many, ladies and gentlemen, you are welcome. And might I add a special welcome to Lady Mawby and Lady Fisher and to Sir George's only son, Peter, who with his wife, Betty and one of Sir George's three daughters, Helen, are present this evening, and also to Sir Maurice's son, Colin, and Colin's wife, Jay, also in our company.The family presence must surely be a great source of pleasure and satisfaction to all those so intimately concerned.It is hardly necessary for me to state the sole and only reason for our presence here tonight, which is to confer on Sir George Fisher and Sir Maurice Mawby Honorary Membership of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and at the same time to acknowledge two people who have rendered great service to the mining industry, albeit tinged with sadness to all of us in the knowledge that from now on their influence may diminish. It is now my pleasure to introduce, although that is hardly necessary, Sir Maurice Mawby, the second member of the duo we honour here this evening, and whose contribution to the mining industry is also beyond assessment.

This paper explains why the valuation of mining assets is often a very different exercise from the valuation of the shares in the mining company which owns those assets. The fundamental reason for this is that mining assets, and the shares of the company which owns those assets have different risks. In order to properly value mining securities it is essential to: ò ensure all the different risks and other factors which impact on the value of the mining assets and the value of the shares are taken into account; and determine the extent to which the different risks and other factors are addressed in the value of the mining assets and the value of the shares so as to avoid double counting or not counting at all. If the alternative, but far from consensus, view is accepted that the correct valuation methodology to apply to shares in mining companies should be based on option pricing theory then conventional valuation practice of both mining assets and shares in mining companies will need to be fundamentally reassessed.

This paper discusses the results of an Australian Coal Association Research Program project into the development of a routine analytical design method for roof support in underground mines. Simple design tools have been developed using a combination of elastic solutions, free body diagrams, and pile theory. An approach to the design of roof support in layered strata based on the ability of bolts to resist shear stresses is outlined. It is shown that pre-tensioning and angled installation are effective ways of increasing the effectiveness of bolts in such a situation. In highly stressed strata, macroscopic failure is predicted and a design based on the support of surcharged rock wedges is proposed. The methods are applicable to both coal and metalliferous mines.

This paper discusses a number of examples of how environmental factors have been incorporated into the water management aspects of mining projects. One example is the Kingston Lignite Project in the South-East of South Australia where the most significant environmental issue was considered to be the effect of drawdown from mine dewatering and depressurization upon the use of groundwater. By proposing an alternative mining method - the use of floating dredges rather than a two-pass dragline method - drawdown effects would no longer be a concern. A second example is the Pine Creek Gold Mine in the Northern Territory. In this case the principal area of interest from an environmental viewpoint was water management - in particular effluent disposal, contaminated seepage from overburden and tailings, and project water supply. Through an integrated approach to the management of wastes and water the potential for water quality impairment was significantly reduced and external water supply requirements were also significantly reduced.

The major operational objectives of a mine water resource management system (WRMS) are to supply the water needs of the mine and mill, to minimise disturbance to mining due to rainfall flooding or seepage and to dispose of excess water. Historically, company management have placed a significantly lower emphasis on managing the WRMS as compared to managing production. Changing Government legislation concerned with the disposal of water from mine sites is, in many cases making mining companies look more closely at how they manage their water. For example, within the next few years it is likely that prior to mining approval by the Government, mining operations will have to submit water management plans/budgets and contingency strategies in addition to operational plans. While the formulation of a comprehensive water management plan/budget is an additional cost to the company at the mine establishment stage, such plans can be beneficial to the operation in the longer term.The two keys for the efficient design, operation and development of a WRMS are the establishment of written goals which have managerial priority and secondly, access to appropriate good quality data. Managerial priority towards the WRMS will increase as a consequence of the education of mine operators in the benefits to the operation of good WRMS management or less desirably as a requirement to meet Government legislation. The collection of appropriate WRMS data is a more complex issue and to obtain information efficiently and cost effectively relies on the clear definition of the data application.

Microorganisms have been used throughout history for the benefit of mankind with some of the earliest applications being in the production of fermented foods and beverages. Reactions involving inorganic substances such as metals, sulphur and sulphide compounds were hardly ever used until the early 1900s when it was discovered that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was capable of promoting the oxidation of metal sulphides in ores. Today, it is widely recognised that biotechnology has great potential in the minerals industries, particularly in such areas as the leaching of low-grade ores of metals such as copper, gold and uranium; removal of heavy metal ions from process streams and from liquid process wastes; and in the desulphurisation of high-sulphur fuels. Although widespread commercialisation of mineral biotechnology has not yet been achieved, it is estimated that by the Year 2000 mineral biotechnology will have a significant impact on the minerals and metal industry and will probably account for tens of billions of dollars worth of annual production world-wide. This paper examines the actual and possible future applications of biotechnology in the minerals, metal refining and fossil-fuel processing industries. Firstly, the important chemical (and biochemical) principles involved in bio-dissolution of metals from ores and solid wastes, and in bio-accumulation of metals from process and waste solutions are reviewed, including leaching practices - past, present and future. Microbial desulphurisation of coal, and microbially-enhanced oil recovery are also discussed. The practical aspects of genetics and genetic engineering, the types and characteristics of those microorganisms important to mineral biotechnology, and the current research trends are reviewed as well. Mining of the silver-lead-zinc orebodies at the George Fisher Mine officially started in 2000. A review of mining performance to date shows that many of the extracted primary stopes have experienced some degree of hangingwall dilution. The degree of hangingwall failure in the stopes became progressively more extensive throughout mining of the orebodies in 2001 and 2002, culminating in the unplanned catastrophic failure of the 744D stope in which the ore between 13C (2683RL) and 12L (2714RL) sublevels caved into the previously mined cavity between 13L (2654RL) and 13C sublevels. This was followed several months later by another unplanned caving event in a nearby stope, 740D. As a direct result of these unplanned failures it was decided to mine the stopes with a smaller span than had been previously planned and in a primary-secondary pyramidal stoping sequence. To limit the exposure of the stope hangingwall, a hangingwall drive is no longer developed and therefore geologists no longer have access to the detailed geological information that this provided. Geologists at George Fisher Mine have had to be adaptable and flexible in response to these proposed changes and rely more on data from drilling than mapping for their geological interpretation. The result is that the drilling cycle has become much more critical in the planning process.

Magnetite deposits with distinctive ¦ actinolite ¦ apatite -bearing gangue and spatially-extensive sodic-calcic wall rock alteration occur in both Proterozoic metamorphic terrains and Mesozoic-Tertiary magmatic arcs. Examples from both settings constitute significant sources of iron ore (e.g. Kiruna, Sweden; El Romeral, Chile) and some host major Cu-Au deposits that have a local association with K-silicate alteration (e.g. Cloncurry district, NW Queensland; Copiapo district, Chile). A growing body of evidence points to a hydrothermal origin for these systems involving high temperature, low S oxidized fluids. The Cloncurry magnetite-Cu-Au deposits are products of the local structurally channelized influx of a specialized high salinity ore fluid into larger-scale alteration systems developed during pluton emplacement at greater depths than those associated with subvolcanic (porphyry) Cu-Au deposits. The geological characteristics of deposits in magmatic arcs are consistent with a similar mode of origin albeit in rather different tectonic settings.

A pillar 'is a block of coal left in the first working of a coal seam for the purpose of supporting the superincumbent strata in such a manner that the winning out roadways will be safe to traverse by men and by the coal transport system.PRINCIPLES OF PILLAR EXTRACTION.The size of a pillar is chiefly dependent on the depth of cover, and in a lesser degree on the nature of the coal, or the condition in which the seam has been laid down. In a seam at 1,100ft. depth of cover, and assuming a spec'ific gravity of 2.5 overall for the cover strata, a pressure of 1,200lb. per sq. in. is the loading on the top surface of the coal seam before mining begins.When mining commences, and as the pillars are formed, an increased load is imposed on the coal left in the pillars, according to the percentage of coal extracted in the first working. Thus, if 25% extraction is taken in the first working, the load on the pillars is theoretically increased from 1,200lb. per sq. in. to 1,600lb. per sq. in. over the area mined. If this state of things went on indefinitely it would not be possible wholly to extract a pillar because of the extreme pressure tliat would be thrown on the diminishing portion; but, fortunately, another element, that of time, enters into and assists the process of extraction.If the superimposed strata were of an entirely plastic nature, this time factor could not operate, as the cover weight would settle instantly on the remaining portion of the p'illar and finally overwhelm it. The cover strata above a pillar generally have a certain rigidity which does not allow the superimposed weight to settle instantly on the pillar fraction, and it requires a period of time to elapse before the extra weight is felt by the pillar.The time factor varies widely, and is governed entirely by local conditions; it can only be determined by experience gained on the spot or in close proximity to the area of operations. It is dependent on the strength of the strata and its characteristics under bridging conditions.It is, therefore, logical to assume that the more rapidly a pillar can be extracted the greater will be the safety factor and also the percentage of recovery of coal.Up to the present time, the operation of the extraction of pillars in this country has been, with a few exceptions, a manual one, and before mechanization of Collieries can be fully accomplished, the process will have to be performed mecharrically.

IT is most remarkable and valuable property of mediurn and high carbon steels that they should be so susceptible to heat treatment, the wide range of variability in tenacity, ductility, etc, due to the normal influence of the carbon in the untreated material being enormously inereased thereby.The physical properties of steel and other metals are much more closely related to their structure than to their ultimate analysis.For instance, we may by chemical analysis determine the carbon content of a steel to be 0.5% ; but this information alone is insufficient to enable us to say what are the physical properties of the metal.Such a steel may possess 11 tensile strength of anything from 35 tons per sq. in., with much ductility, up to 80 tons per sq. in., with practically no ductility, according to its heat treatment. A microscopie examination, on the other hand, would show the structural composition of the steel, from which its physical properties could be approximately deduced. The cross-sectional method of stope grade estimation at Cobar Mines has consistently had several shoneomings, me most imponant of which being mat stope grade is significantly overestimated in the high grade lenses.The use of mree-dimensional ore lens modelling improved the grade estimation and ore waste definition but significant overestimation still occurred in me high grade stopes, particularly those wim extremely variable grade distribution. The implementation of an indicalor kriging based method for mapping of me high grade copper mineralization has significantly improved the quality of copper grade estimates and provides a mineralisation geometry similar to that generated manually by me mine geologists. This paper presents the results of a test case study in the application of indicator kriging to the mapping of the copper grade in two stopes in the QTS North mineralisation. The results are encouraging in that they prov ide coofi rmation of the geometrical model developed by the geologists and much improved estimates of the grades of me stopes whencompared to me grade reponed from mining these stopes.

In engineering applications of explosives for rock breaking, the released energy is expended mainly into heat, rock crushing and fracturing, seismic waves, air blast, and noise. Those parts of energy which pass into seismic waves and air wave create environmental problems since they are transmitted away from the blast site. In order to predict the environmental effects accurately, one must be able to predict the energy distribution at the source. The energy distribution at the source is significantly controlled by the blast constriction. Consequently, the accuracy of prediction and control of ground vibrations generated by blasting is affected by various matrices of blasting constriction.

There has been considerable attention in the literature to coarse sizing by wet and dry screening, but these methods have not proven to be applicable to the calculation of screen capacities for fine wet sizing, desliming and media recovery: A method is presented for the calculation of the size of screens for such duties, being based on the mean particle size of the oversize material on the screen which reflects the surface area from which the fines or media must be removed. Similarly for dewatering, it is the area from which the water must be drained. Desliming, media recovery and dewatering are each considered along with water require- ments both with the feed and as wash water.

Oil Exploration Companies are primarily interested in how much oil or gas is present in the rocks in an area in which an exploratory well is drilled. The solution of this problem requires a combined effort on the part of the petroleum geologists, drilling engineers, logging and drilling contractors. To help in'explaining how the drilling and evaluation is earried out the paper has been divided into two sertions, one titled Drilling which is presented by Mr. P.H.J.-Hammett and the seeond titled Evaluation which is presented by Mr. R.M.L. Elliott. A typical Perth Basin Well has been chosen as art example for this presentation. In Figure 1A is shown the type of sandstone and shale sequence encountered in this area.

With the continued drop in export coal prices (as measured in US$) delivered to the Pacific Rim market, and a fixed annual 12 per cent increase in overburden, Usibelli Coal Mine Inc was faced with the need to reduce mining costs substantially or else forfeit its foreign coal contractual commitment which amounted to about half of annual mine output. Management made a difficult and fortuitous decision to proceed with an engineered plan to switch from a two seam, extended bench dragline operation to a two seam, cast blast and spoil side operation. While down-sizing and cut-backs became the rule in all departments of the mine, the drilling and blasting budget was more than doubled. Most will agree that this is contrary to what usually happens when a mine is faced with down sizing. The more common scenario would have management target the drilling and blasting budget for decrease as a first priority to cutting cost, and then later witness a decrease in equipment performance leading to an increase in the production cost per tonne. Although Usibelli Coal Mine more than doubled its annual drilling an blasting budget three years ago, the overall stripping cost has be, reduced by more then 37 per cent.

The Latrobe Valley brown coal deposits are one of Australia's major energy resources with measured and indicated reserves amounting to some 162 billion tonnes. Economically recoverable reserves are estimated at some 65 billion tonnes, 47 billion tonnes of which are classified as available for mining (VBCC (1983)). These deposits contain one of the lowest grade fuels used anywhere in the world. Typical Net Wet Specific Energy values range from 6 to 9 MJ/kg. Despite the low energy value of the raw coal, the Latrobe Valley deposits represent approximately 90% of Victoria's indigenous non-renewable energy resources. Utilisation of this vast primary energy resource has been a key factor in the economic development of Victoria.

Why go to the CIS? The vast mineral potential of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has long been recognised, but it has taken the lowering of the iron curtain to open up the region to serious mineral development consideration by the Western World. The advent of a free market economy and the emergence of the Independent States with pressing needs for foreign investment has led to a greatly improved investment climate. Coupled with the desire for some of the more entrepreneurial resources companies to head the wave of investment to the region, this sequence of events has promised a great deal, but delivered only modest progress to-date. Potential gold project development has provided the major focus, for three reasons: the region is highly prospective for gold, gold projects tend to have a relatively lower start-up capital cost compared to base metal and fossil fuel projects and finally bullion or refined gold is more readily transportable and easier to sell.
