Rock bolting has become the most important method of ground support at Mount Isa. Various types of rock bolts are used to suit the different applications and requirements. To apply rock bolting techniques satisfactorily, it is necessary to have some knowledge of the nature of the rock, the type of rock failure, any stress redistribution which may occur during the intended life of the rock bolt and the time for which ground support is required. At Mount Isa there are a number of dif- ferent applications of rock bolts for ground support, and some trends in rock bolting techniques.

The Mount Tom Price Concentrator, which contains a heavy medium cyclone plant for beneficiation of the -6+0.5mm fraction of low grade iron ore, is described. Testwork was carried out on an opportune basis over a period exceeding twelve months, to evaluate the separation performance of the heavy medium cyclones. Plastic density tracers were used and ore samples were taken and analysed. The effect of operating medium specific gravity (S.G.) on the separation parameters, the iron grade of the sinks product, and the mass and iron recoveries were investigated. Also examined were the differences in perform- ance between particles of different size. The implications of the findings for plant oper- ation are discussed.

For the mechanisation or automation of mining, recognition of the shape of mined cavities is basic information. A three dimensional shape measuring system, developed and tested, includes an ultrasonic range finder which is attached to the tip of a serial link manipulator. The range finder can be moved to any position and direction in the operational space of the manipulator. The position of a point on the surface of the object is obtained from the position of the range finder, the direction of the beam of the ultrasonic waves and the measuring distance of the range finder.To avoid collision between the sensor and the object, the manipulator is controlled to trace the surface of the object For the tracing control, another ultrasonic range finder is employed. The test results show that the developed system has high performance.

Recent whole-rock geochemical data from nearly 900 fresh drill core and underground samples taken from seven central Victorian gold deposits confirm the presence of distinct and identifiable primary alteration haloes surrounding the deposits. Ferroan carbonate alteration extends for up to several hundred metres away from turbidite-hosted gold mineralisation outside of contact metamorphic aureoles. A less distinct phyllic alteration zone can be identified using geochemical molar ratios or short wave infrared analysis. It generally overlaps a sulfidic halo characterised by disseminated pyrite and in close proximity to mineralised structures, arsenopyrite. The extent of the sulfidic halo can be traced using low-level analysis of pathfinder elements such as S, Au, As and Sb. Recognition of these alteration features enlarges the target for exploration and provides a tool by which drilling can be directed towards mineralised structures. It is recognised by the current JORC (1999) code that resource classification involves the interaction of numerous qualitative and quantitative criteria such as data quality, geological continuity and grade continuity. No prescribed criteria and rules will work for all situations or even between different ore types within the same deposit. Also these criteria and rules are sometimes applied without a clear understanding of their appropriateness, accuracy or correct implementation. For these reasons case studies are useful to evaluate and compare criteria commonly used to assist in resource classification. In this paper blasthole data from a selected area of Joffre Member hosted ore of the Brockman Iron Formation at the Mt Whaleback orebody are used as the basis of a case study for the above-mentioned purposes. Iron grade, in per cent, is interpolated from a blasthole dataset into a block model using ordinary kriging. Samples are then removed from this blasthole dataset to produce a random sample grid, a semi-random sample grid and a regular sample grid. Using nearest neighbour, inverse distance squared, ordinary kriging and sequential gaussian simulation, block iron grades are estimated using these three blasthole data subsets as inputs. This provides four groups of estimates with the ordinary kriging estimate based on the complete blasthole dataset being considered to represent the true estimate of iron grades. Also generated during this process are estimates of the error for each block. These error estimates range from the simple, such as drill spacing, through to more advanced methodologies such as kriging efficiency and simulation. These estimates of grade and grade estimation error are then compared to the true estimate using graphs and statistics. In order of increasing accuracy the block grade estimation and simulation methods were nearest neighbour, inverse distance weighting, ordinary kriging and finally conditional simulation. The simulation in some instances doubled the accuracy of individual block grade estimates when compared to nearest neighbour and inverse distance weighting estimates. It was found that many methodologies for estimating the error of individual blocks performed equally well with only methods such as average drill hole spacing and classification by search ellipse pass number performing poorly. An approach on how to convert the abovementioned error estimates of individual blocks into a meaningful JORC classification is also discussed. Although advanced non-linear resource estimates are applicable, most iron ore mines are still using relatively straightforward methods. The use of blasthole data and some simple linear interpolation methods and simple linear based error estimates makes this study repeatable for most iron ore sites and their resource geologists. This style of investigation is recommended as a useful approach for the Competent Person to apply to their deposit and thus better select, implement and understand the criteria used for resource classification and provide more consistency and confidence in the resource classification process.

The firing of mass blasts at Isa Mine is a normal operating practice. Both electric and non-electric initiating systems are being used for this purpose. The advantages gained by large firings relate to the Planning, Scheduling, Services and Production functions of Isa Mine. More efficient us"e is made of manpower due to the concentrated charging effort and con- tinuity of the charging operation. In addition, the requirement for ring firing personnel to work at the edge of large stope voids is reduced. Better fragmentation results from the interaction of adjacent detonating rings of blastholes and in flight collisions. With mass blasts there is also less chance of large blocks of ore, created by faults or joints, falling into the stope and creating problems at the drawpoints. The formation of a large tonnage of broken ore facilitates production at scheduled rates from that stope source. The weight of explosive detonating during a mass blast can be considerable. Isa Mine has achieved satisfactory blasting results without excessive ground vibration levels and present knowledge indicates that pillar ground stab- ility has been maintained.

A model of dense medium cyclones is developed based on balancing the terminal velocities of the discrete particles due to the centrifugal force against a random turbulent eddy velocity. An expression of the form P - or Q _ 1 100 e."A where P is the partition number., is a function of cyclone efficiency, particle size and density differential between the particle and medium, and is the slurry spilt, is developed and may be used for regressing plant partition data. The above model provides an understanding of peculiarities of the partition curve such as asymmetrical tails, elevation of the cutpoint and elevation of the d50 with increasingly fine feed. The effect of feed variables such as particle size, medium viscosity and changes in spigot or vortex finder diameter is shown. A means of convoluting the partition curve with various feed washabilities is discussed together with how the above may be used to evaluate plant performance for a variety of feeds.

Comminution of solids is surely one of the oldest technologies which even in this day and age of DNAs, chips and space exploration continues to challenge our scientific acumen and engineering ingenuity. In essence, this challenge is two-fold. One, as much as three to four per cent of all electric power generated world-wide is consumed in crushing and grinding primarily because the utilisation of energy is woefully poor. Studies have shown that the efficiency of mechanical size reduction processes is of the order of 1.5 to 12 per cent only (Schoenert 1986). Two, with the grinding technologies available to us, we have, at best, inadequate and, at worst, almost negligible control over the shape of the comminuted particles, size dispersion of the ground mass, and the sharpness of mineral liberation. Low energy efficiency and lack of control in the sense mentioned above have far-reaching implications for resource conservation, performance of down stream unit operations, and damage to the environment. Our problem is in fact central to the mineral-energy resources triangle shown in Figure 1 which depicts the close interrelationships among mineral resources which are becoming poorer in content and more complex in mineralogy each day, energy resources which are depleting rapidly without any viable alternate on the horizon, and environmental concerns which can no longer be ignored. It is evident that any improvement in the efficiency of the comminution process impacts directly on the control of environmental damage, conservation of energy and the economics of the operation. These concerns have special relevance for the processing of non-ferrous ores.

A major initial and ongoing cost component in many mining operations is that of transporting mined materials and processed ore from the point of extraction or processing to the next operation. For various reasons the transport distance can be significant or in some cases the route may be particularly challenging. The trend to higher production rates to gain economy of scale benefits and capitalise on sales opportunities means that optimisation of transport can play a significant part in profitability. Apart from the cost criteria, increasingly there are other criteria such as environmental restraints, land ownership and security of supply that can have a significant impact on determination of the optimum route and transport vehicle. The paper aims to briefly highlight the important selection criteria and the benefits and disadvantages of the most commonly utilised transport vehicles. It then moves on to looking in more depth at belt conveying, highlighting the unique capabilities of the Metso MRC Cable Belt Conveyor system.

In order to study conditions under which SiO(g) may be formed in a blast furnace, equilibrium phase diagrams were constructed for the combustion of high and low ash cokes with oxygen-enriched blast and oil injection under conditions of high and low raceway pressures. Free energy minimisation techniques were used to calculate the composition of gaseous and condensed phases. Where coke ash is assumed, for simplicity, to comprise Si02 only, the coke can be comple- tely gasified, mainly to SiO and CO, under restricted conditions of coke to blast ratio and at temperatures greater than 1600 - 1650¦C, depending on system pressure. The formation of SiO(g) is partially suppressed by the introduction of alumina into the ash, because of the formation of solid and liquid alumino- silicate compounds. The minimum temperature for complete silicon gasification is raised to about 1700¦C. The results of the equilibrium calcula- tions are related-to actual raceway conditions. It is proposed that virtually all silicon in the coke ash is gasified such that, on condensation, it affects hot metal chemistry and slag properties and secondly, that the effects will be greater with higher ash cokes.

Grinding has been one of the areas of major development at Outokumpu's concentrators. During its early years the company used entirely rod and hall mills, but due to the high costs of metallic grinding it began the testing of autogenous grinding as early as the 1950s. In the late-1970s, the company's own modification for two stage autogenous grinding was ready for industrial use. Surprisingly late, in the 80s - 90s, an interest rose to check also the effects of grinding methods on flotation results. This paper firstly gives a short history of the development work of Outokumpu type autogenous grinding, called 'Outogenius'. The effects of some grinding methods on the process results of two nickel ores are then reviewed. The tests to date show notable effects of grinding methods on flotation.

Underground measurements, observations and computed simulations, started a long time ago were concerning the study of : - occurence of typical rockburst, - inducing, stretching of main fractures in the roof of caved longwalls. They made obvious a foundamental phenomenon of inducing of strata fractures involving contact be- tween two layers quite different in their elastic characteristics : coalseam and rocklayer.. The start of primary cracks in maximum abutment zone takes place in the rock near the contact surface. It is opening of crevasses induced by traction stress component resulting of difference of rigidity of both materials and no sliding on in- terface. Occurence and stretching of these crevas- ses are a rheological phenomenon so that the rate of advance and stops of the face influence the distance between the crevasses and the stretching of these ones. The characteristics of these cracks in space and time affect mining conditions. So it is for fractures proximity and expan- sion inducing eventual blocks formation in longwall roofs in front of faces, for depth and delay of road- ways ribsides fracturing, inducing some rockbursts. In longwalls roofs, cracks initiated in front of a face can be either quite close or quite distant each from the other one, according to the depth of crushed coal in front of the face, which af- fects also extension of the cracks.

In 1955 the annual production of steel at Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd., Port Kembla was 1.2 million tonne and over the following two decades this had progressively increased to the present capacity of 5.4 million tonne per annum. This increase in productivity has also been accompanied by important developments in steelmaking technology and these are explained in the chronological order in which they have taken place. Reference is made to the use of oxygen in open hearth furnaces, the B.O.S. process, the Argon-Oxygen decarburisation process for stainless steel, vacuum degassing and continuous casting. When the vacuum degassing and continuous casting units are commissioned, the Port Kembla Works will have achieved a standard of steelmaking technology equal to any in the world.

A series of laboratory flotation tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of various depressants as arsenic (and zinc) depressants in the lead cleaner stage of the NBHC mill at Broken Hill. The depressants used included potassium cyanide, ferrous sulphate, sodium hypochlorite, potassium ferricyanide and two Cyanamid commerical depressants, Aerodepressants 610 and 633. A standard roughing stage was completed before the addition of the reagents in the cleaning stage. All reagents tested produced significant arsenic depression, with the best results being obtained with the addition of potassium cyanide and sodium hypochlorite. Some of the depressants activated the zinc in the process of arsenic depression. The best result was obtained with the addition of 90 g/t potassium cyanide at a pH of 10 when arsenic recovery was only 1/4 that of the value obtained for the standard test.

The uranium mineralization in the White's East area of The Embayment is hosted by Lower Proterozoic schists of the Masson Formation which have undergone polyphase de- formation and upper greenschist metamorphism. Significant mineralization is also present in apatite rocks. The ore zones occur near an unconformity with overlying Middle Proterozoic sandstone and breccia conglomerate. Kink breccias and fracture systems related to post Middle Proterozoic reverse faults are the con- trols for mineralizing fluid migration. Pitchblende is the main uranium mineral and it occurs as fine disseminated grains, fibrous webs, clusters composed of botryoidal aggregates and locally as veins. Two genera- tions of uranium mineralization are present. The first generation (pitchblende I) occurs as fine grained inclusions within chlorite II, and the second (pitchblende II) as hydraulic fracture networks and massive veins intimately associated with sericite-hematite-chlorite III. Two hydrothermal alteration phases have affected both Lower Proterozoic and Middle Proterozoic sequences. The most extensive alteration mineral is chlorite, of which a number of varieties has been identified. Mg-rich chlorites are generally associated with the first phase alteration assemblages and are commonly replaced by hematite, seri- cite and Mg-Fe chlorites in massive pitch- blende zones. Other alteration minerals in- clude tourmaline, apatite, talc, quartz, magnesite, graphite, pyrite and rutile.

Using normal low pressure filtration methods for the dewatering of fine china clays, the best that can be achieved is cakes with about 30% moisture. In order to get the moisture levels down to acceptable levels the traditional method used is thermal drying, which is both costly and dust creating. It was to improve this process that ECC International embarked upon a programme of development of filtration equipment using high pressure to achieve significantly lower moisture levels. This development work investigated several design philosophies and culminated in the production of two quite different solutions. The High Pressure Plate Press uses round plates / chambers of one metre diameter and a filtration pressure of 70 bar. This press is fully automatic and produces a surface dry cake that has sufficient plasticity for the further processing that is required on specific qualities of china clay. The TUBE PRESS on the other hand uses a unique design configuration and operates at a filtration pressure of 100 or 140 bar, depending upon the model. The TUBE PRESS produces a brittle, surface dry cake that is easy to handle and a filtrate that is usually crystal clear. The TUBE PRESS achieves a much higher degree of separation than is possible with conventional equipment, which is particularly important if the filtrate is the product. Over the past 15 years plants incorporating both HP Plate Presses and TUBE PRESSES have been installed in the china clay operations of ECC International and are giving excellent trouble free service. The TUBE PRESS has also proved to be extremely versatile, effectively dewatering a wide range of fine particled slurries, in a number of diverse industries.

Placer Dome Asia Pacific operates eight mines in the region and has two closed operations that are either under rehabilitation or at the latter stage of care, monitoring and maintenance. All operating mines are scheduled to close within the next ten years based on current proven reserves. Mine closure planning and associated risk assessments are integrated into both strategic planning and day-to-day operations within the Placer Dome group. Mine closure is all about predicting the potential risks and Placer DomeÆs knowledge has improved following the planned closure at Kidston Gold mine in North Queensland. Planning for closure commenced in earnest in 1994, and focused on identifying the issues and associated potential risk to the environment, and ensuring that the most suitable control measures were implemented leading up to and following closure in July 2001. At all times during the process of planning, implementation, safety contractor management and post closure, the identification of risk and potential threats to the business have been identified and managed. Post closure risk assessment of rehabilitation strategies potential to fail has been completed in conjunction with URS and opportunities to manage these potential failures in perpetuity will be discussed along with lease surrender. Misima Mines is currently processing low-grade ore and plans to close in 2004. Planning for closure has been ongoing for several years with a focus on the social aspects and the impact of the mine closing on a remote island community. Misima Mines has assessed the risk profiles using a community closure focus group, to identify both the biophysical and social aspects for closure.

The far reaching consequences of designing pillars for coal mines, while retaining concern for safety and economics, are cause for the search for refinement of the existing engineering methods to continue. Coal pillars, while having various functions within the overall mine plan, are the basic structural elements that assure the stability of a mine. Reliable coal pillar design methods take into account criteria which the pillars should meet in specific applications. These applications include typical mining situations such as the partial extraction room and pillar method with and without subsidence considerations, high extraction rate room and pillar, longwall mining chain pillars, and barrier pillars. However coal pillars are onlyu one element of a three element roof-pillar-floor system, weakest element of which system usually determines the stability of the excavations; however, the mining engineer can ony change dimensions of a pillar, properties of the surrounding strata remain beyond his control. The state of the art approach in pillar design places emphasis on recent developments in research. A widely encountered problem in certain coal fields is where pillars are underlain by weak floor strata. The resultant pillar design constantly maintains the perspective of the reliability of the design.

The occurrence of gold so finely divided as to be invisible under the microscope, even at magnificatioIl; of 1,200 to 2,000 diameters, is rare, but not unknow;n.. Burg (1930) has described an occurrence of such "invisible gold" from the 25/37 vein of the Bradisor mine at Brad in the Siebengeburgen district of Rumania (Transylvania), in which the pyrite contained up to 150 grams of gold per ton (approx. 5 oz. gold per ton). Hoffman (1931) has described an epithermal silver gold ore from the Titiribi district of Columbia (South America), in which "invisible gold" to the extent of 150 grams per ton occurred in the pyrite, arsenopyrite and zincblende; and Haycock (1937) has recorded it in pyrite from the Surf Point mine (Canada), which contained no visible gold, but yielded positive testsfor gold whenever samples drilled from polished surfaces of apparently homogeneous pyrite were tested spectrographically.The examination of a cyanided pyritic concentrate, together with a sample of the ore from which it' was prepared, from the Dolphin East lode at Vatukoula, Fiji, carried out as part of the programme of the Mineragraphic Section of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Australia, has established a further occurrence of "invisible gold" in pyrite and arsenopyrite. The Dolphin pyrite contains about 25 oz. gold per ton, and the arsenopyrite contains more than 33 oz. per ton.The concentrate has been prepared for the Mill Superintendent of the Emperor Gold Mining Co. by L. The subject of heat sources in deep hard rock mines, the limitation of forced ventilation to cope with these heat loads and the sizing of refrigeration plants to boost the cooling effect of the ventilation air are discussed. The development of plant selection criteria and operating experience at North Broken Hill Limited is outlined. Future options for North Broken Hill Limited and like deep mines are summarised.
