"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Ore-bearing intrusions in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) were examined from nine mines: Boshekul, Nurkazgan, Kounrad, Borly, Aktogai, Koksai, Baogutu, Tuwu and Erdenet. The intrusions are diorite, granodiorite and tonalite with SiO2 contents ranging from 58 to 75 wt per cent, and show mildly fractionated rare earth elements (REE) ([LREE]N/[HREE]N = 2.7–4.7) – light REE and heavy REE – and varying Eu anomalies ([Eu]/[Eu]* = 0.58–1.4). The ratios of Sr/Y vary from 7.9 to 115 and the contents of Y from 4.6 to 23.9 ppm. The parental magmas of the intrusions are intrinsically oxidised. Zircon grains in the ore-bearing rocks from large- and intermediate-sized porphyry Cu deposits show high Ce4+/Ce3+ ratios characterised by 65–422 at Boshekul (>4.1 Mt Cu), 76–480 at Kounrad (>4.8 Mt Cu), 90–280 at Aktogai (>12 Mt Cu), 80–250 at Erdenet (>11 Mt Cu) 74–370 at Nurkazgan (>3.9 Mt Cu), 100–210 at Koksai (>1.6 Mt Cu), and 71–340 at Tuwu (~2.0 Mt Cu). In two small deposits, the ore-bearing rocks display low values of Ce4+/Ce3+; Borly (0.6 Mt Cu) ranging from 28 to 158, and Baogutu (0.6 Mt Cu) from 29 to 113. The Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio of 120 distinguishes large intermediate-size deposits from small-size deposits. Ensuring that diesel particulate matter (DPM) levels in underground metal and non-metal mines are maintained below statutory limits is an essential requirement of mine ventilation systems. However, despite the cost of providing ventilation, air ventilation rates are usually based upon models, assumptions, or measurements integrated over long durations rather than actual need. Real-time measurement of DPM, interpreted in terms of mine activity schedules, can offer better ventilation management to keep DPM within regulated levels while controlling costs. This work presents data from three demonstration sites with in-mine applications of an environmental particulate sensor that measured black carbon (BC) as a surrogate for DPM.Aethalometers are a class of environmental monitors that measure the light absorbance of aerosol particles at several optical wavelengths. A model AE33 Aethalometer was operated in three separate mines for periods of two weeks, three months, and seven-plus months, and the data was reported in real time as a concentration of BC. Concentration of aromatic organic compounds, which can indicate other forms of combustion, was also reported. The data was used to:- measure the relative efficiency of a new scale-model DPM air scrubber- determine if ventilation could be reduced in a shotcrete loading facility without compromising air quality- evaluate diurnal and weekly DPM levels in a large-entry stone mine. Instrument data were displayed locally and stored for later downloading in all cases. In one mine, the instrument was connected to a local controller, and in another it was connected to the mine’s underground network so that DPM data was presented in real time to a display in the mine ventilation engineering office on the surface.The results showed that the air scrubber removes from 82 per cent to 95 per cent of the DPM; that DPM produced during shotcrete loading is only a minor part of overall DPM levels; and that wide variations in DPM levels exist in the limestone operation. The DPM monitor operated continuously for extended periods in these underground environments. The only maintenance required was the routine replacement of filter tape, typically on a two-week schedule. A sample diluter, which is currently being tested, could extend the intervals between filter changes. The New Zealand Minerals Industry is small but growing. Over the next 10 years it will be facing stiff international competition for skills to support this growth, particularly from Australia who are forecasting that a further 70 000 people will be employed by 2015.   The value of commodities mined and quarried in NZ continues to increase; and the value of coal, metals and industrial minerals production reached $1.505 billion in 2006, an increase of 15 per cent on 2005. Production increases will continue à. Latest Crown Minerals statistics show that national prospecting and exploration expenditure rose to $29.9 million in the year ended March 31 2006 û an increase of 46 per cent from the $20.4 million spent in the March 2005 year. The equivalent 2001 year expenditure was only $2.48 million.   The industry already experiences difficulty in recruiting the people it needs with ongoing demand for skilled underground miners, trades people, and mining professionals. This discussion paper will outline the national context with regard to labour, skills and training. It will suggest options and provide an opportunity for conference participants to discuss the way forward.

The range of environments which control the level of ground support required vary greatly in terms of rock type, rock structure and the mining method used. At the operating mines visited during this review the level of ground support was such that incidence of rock-fall- related accidents were rare. It was also found that methods existed to support most of the conditions encountered. The main problem areas were weak rock, major geological structures, areas of heavy jointing, high development density and areas affected by high mining-induced stresses and blasting. With stope support the level of success was much lower than that achieved in development; the larger spans and more rapid changes in geometry of open stopes compared with cut and fill stoping (where cables were originally used) led to significant problems. Before a useable design method for cable support of stope walls and pillars can be obtained the precise failure mode of the walls and pillars, and the interaction of the support and the rock mass must be investigated.

At Ohio Creek, 3 km northwest of the Thames bonanza goldfield, porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation is hosted in a dacite porphyry associated with porphyry intrusion breccias and overlying andesites and dacites. The geological setting is a Jurassic greywacke basement overlain by Late Miocene andesite-dacite volcanics which are extensively altered to propylitic and argillic assemblages. Diamond drilling at Ohio Creek in 1978-1981 by Amoco Minerals intersected low grade Cu-Au (0.12-0.20% C~ 0.23-0.4 glt Au) mineralisation An advanced argillic 'alteration cap containing quartz-alunite¦dickite or pyrophyllite-dickite¦diaspore is centred on the adjacent Lookout Rocks and has potential for high sulfidation Au-Cu mineralisation. There is a zonation from potassic K-feldspar-magnetitealteration at depth in the dacite porphyry, through an overlying phyllic quartzsericite- pyrite zone which is overprinted by pyrophyllite in the overlying advanced argillic cap. Early quartz stockwork veinlets associated with the potassic alteration contain fluid inclusions that trapped a highly saline (50-80 wt% NaCI equiv) fluid at high temperatures (450 to >600¦C) indicative of a magmatic fluid. Some chalcopyrite is associated with slightly later quartz-magnetite veinlets, but the bulk of the copper occurs as disseminated chalcopyrite associated with the phyllic alteration. The potassic alteration is surrounded and overprinted by propylitic chlorite¦epidote alteration. Late polymetallic sulfide-quartz-anhydrite veins occur within and around the margins of the porphyry system as in the Kaiser Reef. Fluid inclusions associated with these late veins were formed at temperatures of about 250-320¦C from low salinity (1-3 wfl~ NaCI equiv) fluids. The spatial association between porphyry eu-Au mineralisation, advanced argillic alteration and polymetallic sulfide veins suggests that they are genetically part of the same hydrothennal system. This is consistent with reconnaissanceK-Ar dates of 11.6-10.7 Ma for the intrusive porphyry at Ohio Creek, alunite in the advanced argillic alteration zone at Lookout Rocks and sericite selvedges from the Waiotahi gold-quartz veins at Thames.

During longwall mining in the Bowen Basin, open tension cracks formed by overburden subsidence occur to a height of about 175 m above the mining horizon. Within this zone, water in aquifers or inundated workings will flow into the mine.At the Oaky Creek mines Aquila seam, open cut pits containing pit water overlie German Creek seam longwall panels at a height of about 105 m. The highly saline water is classified as contaminated and cannot be discharged off-site. Because alternative water storage facilities were not available, innovative water management solutions were needed to allow longwall mining to proceed without underground flooding.Computer modelling and underground inflow measurements have been completed to accurately determine inflow rates into longwall mines from overlying water sources at increasing overburden heights. Research work has also included determining cost-effective blanket treatment of final voids and reshaping spoil piles to minimise downward seepage.Ponded water overlying the Aquila low, Grasstree south and A6 pits required remedial works prior to longwall undermining to prevent flooding. In the Aquila low pit it was necessary to partition the pit and remove water overlying longwall 32. Two in-pit bridges were constructed by dozing and track compacting low wall spoil. The final void above the longwall panel was kept dry during undermining. Maximum recorded underground inflow rate was 30.0 L/s.The Grasstree south pit final void, part of the ramp and much of the spoil piles were inundated prior to undermining of 308 panel. A bridge and blanket were required to prevent ponding above the longwall. Maximum recorded inflow during undermining was 23.2 L/s.The pit A6 south final void, which contained dumped, saturated rejects and inundated highwall mining entries was undermined by longwall 36 at the Oaky No 1 underground mine. Because mapping of highwall entries was not available, the maximum calculated inflow rate of 73.0 L/s was based on all design entries being fully inundated. The actual inflow rate during longwall mining ranged up to 20.0 L/s.Water management improvements that have been implemented include greater use of contaminated pit water to wash coal, use of evaporation fans, and installation of a 6 ML/day reverse osmosis plant for water purification.CITATION:Klenowski, G and Winter, S, 2017. The Bega granite at Whipstick, N.S.W., consists of a granite metasomatically altered to leucogranites and a spessartite-granite. The ore occurs in pipes controlled by jointing and shows evidence of post-depositional tectonic forces.The principal ore minerals are molybdenite and bismuthinite, with minor amounts of uraninite, pyrite, gold, bismuth, joseite A, joseite B, tetradymite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, and skutterudite. The gangue minerals are microcline, albite, quartz, muscovite, and spessartite, with fluorite, chlorite, magnetite, and biotite as accessory minerals.The intrusion of granite was followed initially by ascending metasomatic fluids which penetrated along joints to be trapped in the domed roof of the intrusion to form the leucocratic granite. Iron-manganese-rich fluids metasomatically altered the granite to a spessartitegranite which is associated with the later deposited ore.Quartz veins and dykes of varying composition post date the ore deposition.

QMAP (the Quarter Million Mapping Programme, 1:250 000 scale) is a geological mapping programme which will build a digital geological database of the whole country and publish maps and books to document it. The programme was established in 1993, following a recommendation by a review panel appointed by the Ministry of Research, Science & Technology, and is funded by the government, from the Public Good Science Fund. The relevance and fundamental value of QMAP lies in the greatly improved geological knowledge it will provide for researchers and other end-users of geological information.   QMAP research involves assessment of previous work, field and laboratory investigations in key areas, and data storage, manipulation and publication using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) computer technology. The QMAP digital database of New Zealand geology will be completed by 2006, as will the series of 21 full colour printed geological maps and accompanying explanatory texts. Two are already completed and published (Kaitaia and Dunedin), and six other projects are well advanced.   QMAP information will also be available in digital form. Next year we hope to expand the scope of the programme to cover the reconciling and linking of many other earth science databases to QMAP, because we believe this will create a powerful research tool. The intention is to develop internet access to the databases, to make the information publicly available.

BUCKETT (Lake View and Star Limited) : At the outset I should like to add my congratulations to those already extended to Mr..Norwood on his excellent paper, which has given us all an inspiration to strive further to improve our plant recoveries. In some respects this paper has left us so little to discuss without considerable time spent on. further research work. At all points one is met by a baffling array of facts which leave one feeling hesitant to speak.The careful and methodical way in which Mr. Norwood went along step by step until all channels of research presenting themselves were tested to his own satisfaction leaves me with but a few comments to make. Particularly striking to me is the explanation of the residual gold values in calcines by recrystallization of haematite and here is a line to be attacked by future studies. This will be mentioned again later.Particularizing on the paper, the first point that struck me was the method of change of pyrite through to the final haematite. I have never been able to satisfy myself that a sample taken from various positions along a roaster when cooled, as described on p. 397, represented a fair sample of the conditions at that point, but I must confess that I have not found a substitute that did satisfy me.However, the following figures are illuminating... TowerMill - Advantages in Wet Grinding Applications The TowerMill, which has now been in existence for no less than 50 years, is one alternative to the horizontal ball mill and offers several advantages. The TowerMill is widely used in (coal-fired) electric power plants for the grinding of raw material for the FGD (Flue Gas Desulphurisation) process involving very high throughputs, very fine product sizes and high availability. Some companies in the mining industry also looked at the use of such optimised grinding machines several years ago and found that many of the advantages offered in other industries are transferable to new applications. Much development work has been undertaken to improve the TowerMill for new applications and, as part of that work, tests have also been conducted to make direct comparisons of their performance with that of ball mills. Grinding tests were performed using the same raw materials and comparable machine sizes. Some of the results are discussed in this paper, along with a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages. The conclusion provides an outlook for some worthwhile future applications. The test results, which are described and analysed, show that the TowerMill offers significant advantages in relation to operating costs and operational safety. An example based on the wet grinding of limestone is presented.

Environmental, social and governance issues (ESG) have become a defining feature in the marketplace to differentiate preferred investments. With the sustainability commitment and reporting landscape anticipated to evolve exponentially, it is now imperative to rapidly develop the approach taken by mineral companies to adequately identify and address ESG risks and opportunities in the reporting of Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve (MRMR). MRMR cannot be effectively reported as technically and financially assured and realistically executable, if ESG is not integrated into the strategy, business model, input assumptions and process that defines and drives robust MRMR public reporting. Regulatory reporting codes across the globe are presently in various stages of being updated and modified to ensure ESG factors are appropriately covered as a key part of diligent and transparent disclosure. Security exchanges are making it clear that companies must not omit ESG risks from reports to investors. This paper discusses associated challenges for MRMR reporting and suggests avenues for improvement. Key themes include: the importance of procedure rather than prescription and checklists; how ESG criteria impact Modifying Factors and determination of Reasonable Prospects for Economic Extraction (RPEE); the need for financial models to account for material ESG commitments; the uniqueness of each mineral asset; the need for education, upskilling and accreditation of both ESG experts about MRMR reporting and equally Competent Persons in ESG matters; and the need for clear and balanced reports that meet the needs of end users. (RPEE is adopted here for simplicity and consistency, recognising that some reporting codes still include ‘Eventual’ in the term (ie RPEEE). Whilst RPEE and RPEEE are subtly different the intent is to point to the process of assessing ESG factors in determining reasonable prospects.) The principles of transparency, materiality and competence remain paramount when considering the impact of ESG matters on MRMR reporting, and this necessitates an inclusive, cohesive, and integrated approach to assessing ESG issues to ensure the necessary expertise and diligence is applied.

During the middle of this century, exploration and mining reached a low ebb in New Zealand. Tas McKee did his utmost to rejuvenate the mining industry, using the latest technology and an understanding of the environment far ahead of his time. Today, advances in the geosciences enable sophisticated exploration to proceed to the drilling stage before any significant environmental disturbance is created. Thereafter developments are now carried out with integrated management of the environment and rehabilitation so that disturbed land can be used for other purposes once mining is finished. Thus, we now have environmental engineers and scientists taking their place as professionals in our Institute.

Between February and August of 1986, Dr Alfred Petrick visited New Zealand sponsored under a Fulbright grant administered by the New Zealand-United States Educational Foundation. The grant supported a research project completed by Dr Petrick having as an objective, the preparation of a preliminary economic evaluation of the mining of six Otago lignite deposits as a source of energy for steam power generation or in liquid fuels. The research is limited to consideration of preliminary geological and engineering data on the six deposits and to the time constraints of the Fulbright visit. This paper is a summary of the final Fulbright report. The complete report including the listings of the computer programs is available from the Otago School of Mines.

Although cyclones have been around in their current form since the early-1890s, there have been some exciting new developments, which have extended their efficiency/operation. These developments have taken place with both dense medium and classification cyclones. The more noteworthy developments are:Inlet designInlet design is the determining factor in classification cyclone capacity and efficiency. The recently developed ribbon inlet with patented pressure bulge has not only resulted in unbelievable increases in capacity, but also in efficiency. Sharpness of separation corresponding to an alpha value of greater than four has been achieved! Secondary offtakeOne of the factors leading to reduced cyclone efficiency is the presence of coarse particles in the cyclone overflow. The secondary offtake has been developed specifically to scavenge these particles from the cyclone overflow with great success. Water injectorThe other major factor resulting in reduced cyclone efficiency is the presence of misplaced fine particles in the cyclone underflow. The water injector, which has been around for many years in various forms, can reduce this short circuit fraction by up to 50 per cent. 3-in-1 cycloneThe 3-in-1 cyclone combines the inlet design, secondary off take and water injector into a single unit resulting in the most efficient classification cyclone available in the market. The RejectorTMIron ore has a high yield to underflow and traditional dense medium cyclones have always been spigot constrained. The Rejector TM is an exciting new development whereby the spigot capacity has been increased substantially. The application of the Rejector TM will result in fewer/smaller cyclones being required for a given duty resulting in efficiency gains and reductions in both operating and maintenance costs.

The rocks of Waihi and the surrounding district are almost entirely rhyolitic and ande5itic in character. Sedimentary rocks, with the exception of some surface deposits of clay loosely compacted conglomerate, etc., and one or two thin and broken beds of a very poor lignite, occasionally changed by igneous agencies into a bituminous coal, are almost absent. In the shafts sunk by the Waihi and Grand Junction companies outside the outcropping andesitic area of the Martha Hill, more than one old surface or lake bottom has been passed through. At these points layers of sand, consolidated volcanic mud and tuff, accompanied by numerous broken fragments of imperfectly silicified wood have been enccuntered, but these occurrences may, for the purpose of this paper, be neglected.The youngest rock of the district are rhyolites, probably of Pliocene age. At least three distinct classes of rhyolitic lava, each possessing features of unusual interest, may be made out. None of these, however, is gold-bearing. The youngest flow, a light-coloured, fine-grained rock, is remarkable owing to its enclosing at times fragments of carbonised wood, varying in size from mere specks up to quite large pieces of almost pure charcoal. Rhyolitic tuff is also met with. Many policy issues facing the mining industry and affected communities are at a level of complexity that they can be called ‘wicked’ problems. The term ‘wicked’ in this context is used, not in the sense of iniquity, but rather as social and economic issues highly resistant to resolution. For the resource extraction sector and affected communities there are an array of challenges embedded in the industry’s production and profit paradigm, the remoteness of mineral reserves and affected communities’ expectations of economic benefit and a positive legacy. The mining industry as a whole is dominated by economic, political, legislative and market structures that influence and constrain interactions between mine operations and local communities. For communities, with particular reference to regional Western Australia, intractable problems include the uncertainty of, yet increasing dependence on, a mining economy. Questionable outcomes for local communities include the limited realisation of local employment and business development benefits, and low overall outcomes or low multiplier effects. ‘Wicked’ problems, according to the literature, are best addressed via collaboration. In the mid-west region of WA, with mining and infrastructure construction underway, alliances have formed between mining companies, the major port and rail infrastructure project (Oakajee Port and Rail) and regional and local governance stakeholders. The major impetus for these affiliations is to expedite planning and associated infrastructure development taking into account the lessons from other mineral-led regions. What has resulted is an array of innovative approaches to stubborn problems including planning well in advance of full-scale mining; regionally coordinated procurement; ‘mine ready’ local businesses; and strategic investments in social infrastructure; including community trust funds paid in advance of project delivery. This paper examines these innovative approaches/alliances and assesses their effectiveness in addressing long standing mining/community dilemmas.

The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) is the largest international geoscience project in the world, and the state-of-the-art drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, is permanently at sea. Each year there are six scientific cruises (legs) which each last approximately two months. These legs are designed by geoscientists from the nineteen countries that subscribe to ODP.Australia and Canada presently share ODP membership under the banner of the AUSCAN Consortium. The benefits of Australia's involvement in ODP include internationalisation of Australian geoscience, advanced graduate training, and unique scientific investigations of the ocean floors in the Australasian region. In addition, visits to Australian ports by the ODP drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, contribute up to $2 million per visit to the local economy. Amongst the many other aspects of ten years of scientific drilling, OOP has significantly contributed to our understanding of hydrothermal processes on the seafloor. To date, three hydrothermal sites have been drilled to date by the OOP, Snakepit (MAR), Middle Valley (Juan de Fuca Ridge) and TAG (MAR). Two more hydrothermal sites are scheduled for 1996.

State ownership of mineral in the ground is not newthe Regalian Right is an ancient concept. And the compulsory purchase of land and the minerals beneath it by the State or a body approved by the State (Fitzgerald, 1952) was a principle well established and enforced in practice over a hundred years ago, when such powers became a practical necessity during the period of railway building in Britain and elsewhere:The acquisition of mineral properties which stand in the way of public construction projects still goes on. But in recent years nationalization is being increasingly undertaken as part of the planned use of national resources, for the closer regulation of economic activities, or merely, so it would seem, as a matter of political expediency or national pride. For instance, the unsevered coal in Britain came under State ownership in 1938 in an attempt to simplify a complex pattern of freehold titles which were impedingplanned mining operations. Later, unsevered minerals became a factor in negotiations arising under various town and country planning acts. The acquisition of the Rio Tinto mines by the Spanish Government implies political aspirations.
