HiTec Energy Ltd has been conducting research since 1996 into novel process routes for the treatment of low-grade and waste manganese sources for the production of high value and high quality electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) for the alkaline battery market. HiTecÆs approach is to treat previously unsaleable manganese deposits and mine site tailings using a novel sulfur dioxide leach route, followed by purification and electrowinning to generate the sought-after EMD product by an environmentally superior processing route to those presently practiced throughout the world today.HiTec Energy Ltd expects to be in commercial production with its Stage 1 facility in Kalgoorlie in the last quarter of 2004 for the production of 12 500 tpa EMD. With this production facility being adjacent to a laterite nickel producer with available waste manganese units, the opportunity arose for HiTec to combine its existing technologies with processes (that will be discussed in this paper) to turn two waste by-products into products that are used for high-tech purposes.HiTec Energy Ltd and the Parker Centre have had a collaborative research relationship for a number of years in areas involving EMD and battery related technologies. Meanwhile the solvent extraction (SX) group of the Parker Centre (CSIRO Minerals) has developed SX processes to separate manganese from nickel and cobalt. A project was initiated by HiTec Energy to recover manganese from waste laterite leach solutions using SX technology. Batch tests were conducted to select a suitable organic system for the extraction of manganese in terms of selectivity and extraction and stripping kinetics.A total of eight organic systems were tested by determining pH isotherms of metals using a laterite nickel process waste stream. Two organic systems, the Versatic 10 and Versatic 10/synergist systems, were chosen for further test work with Shellsol D70 chosen as the diluent for both systems.The Versatic 10/synergist system would be advantageous over the pure Versatic 10 system because fewer SX stages are required, resulting in a smaller organic inventory and lower capital costs. The risk of gypsum formation is also significantly lower with the synergistic system.

Currently, there are several open pit mines with production rates of about 200 000 tpd of ore that are reaching the end of their economic lives. In most cases, the remaining orebody extends to depths greater than 300 m below the pit limit, leaving hundreds of millions of tons of reserves that can only be recovered by means of an underground mining method. One such method used for mass production is block caving. This paper presents a ventilation system for a four-zone block cave mine operation developed on a footprint 1000 m wide and 1200 m long. The system is designed for a mine with a nominal production rate of 120 000 tpd of ore using diesel powered units on the production and reduction levels. It discusses the air quantity requirements for the worst case scenario, which is anticipated to occur five years after the mine has reached its full production capacity. Finally, it summarises the results of computer modelling exercises that were carried out to determine an economic ventilation infrastructure that includes shafts, drifts, main fans, and ventilation control devices.

"Mine-derived sedimentation in rivers can have significant impacts on the processes and features of the receiving environment and impact on communities reliant on this environment. However, identifying and quantifying the contribution of mine-derived sediment to the receiving environment can be complex. This is particularly the case in remote environments and where little/no baseline assessments have been undertaken. One approach that can be used involves sediment fingerprinting, whereby a unique tracer is identified within the mine-derived sediment to discriminate between mine- and non-mine derived sediment sources downstream. The technique typically involves sampling of sediment at upstream, control and impact sites and sites within the mine deposit. Laboratory analyses are run on all the samples to determine whether the chemical signature (eg presence/concentration of specific metals) differs between each group of samples. In complex environments where the mine-derived signature may be difficult to detect from a basic review of the data, or where sampling constraints may limit the number of samples for analyses, statistical methods can be used to help identify sediment groups. Cretaceous volcanic activity (Hauterivian Albian) in the Peruvian Andes can be found along the coast of Peru and the western edge of the Andes mountains between 15o30'S and 5o30'S, extending discontinuously in south to Chile and north to Ecuador and Colombia. This volcanic activity formed in three aborted marginal basins; the NNW-trending volcanic Ca±ete and Huarmey, and NNE-trending Lancones basins. These volcanic rocks are predominantly andesitic and basaltic in composition, of calc-alkaline and tholeiite affinity with subordinate dacitic and rhyolitic rocks. One notable feature is the appearance of æocoitasÆ from Ica (14oS) south to Santiago de Chile. These rocks have a calc-alkaline to alkaline affinity. From south to north, the continental crust gradually becomes thinner, allowing mantle material to rise towards the surface. Ophiolitic sequences of this type form a marginal basin in Colombia. Very low-grade regional metamorphism which affects the volcanic rocks also varies gradually from south to north. Between Santiago de Chile and Ica this takes the form of burial metamorphism, with moderate geothermal gradients (20o-30oC/km). Metamorphism in the Huarmey basin is transitional between burial and ocean-floor metamorphism, with very high geothermal gradients (>3000C/km). High geothermal gradients are also apparent in metamorphism of the Lancones basin, though less than the other basins. Ocean-floor metamorphism is present in the ophiolitic sequence in Colombia. Associated mineral deposits in the Huarmey and Lancones basins, and in the north, are of the volcanic massive sulphide-type (VMS). The principal deposits in Peru are Leonila Graciela (20 Mt Zn and Pb) and Tambogrande (40 Mt Cu and Zn). There are also smaller mines and prospects. To the south of Lima, manto-type Cu deposits (CuMT) are found with a mineralogy of chalcopyrites, pyrites, magnetite, actinolite and apatite. The main example is Raul Condestable (10 Mt Cu). Other prospects are present to the south and Chile has some very large mines of this type (El Soldado, Lo Aguirre). The notable differences between the CuMT and the VSM deposits are thought to be the result of the prevailing conditions in the earthÆs crust during the Hauterivian Albian. To the south, calc-alkaline and alkaline volcanic activity in aborted marginal basins, with thicker crust, was thick, produced moderate geothermal gradients associated with burial-type regional metamorphism and deposits of CuMT. In the north aborted marginal basins associated with calc-alkaline to tholeiitic volcanic activity and a gradually thinning crust, produced transitional regional metamorphism between burial-type and ocean-floor type, associated with high to very high geothermal gradients and VMS deposits. In Colombia these conditions led to ophiolite extrusive rocks, ocean-floor metamorphism and also VMS deposits.

A comprehensive computer simulation has been developed for heap and dump leaching processes. It deals with complex chemical interactions, involving several minerals and reagents, which vary with time and location in the dump. The simulation is generally applic- able to ores of various metals extracted by different reagents. It requires only mineral- ogical data obtainable from drill cores and chemical data obtainable from the literature; there is no curve-fitting with adjustable parameters. Applications in designing testwork programmes, evaluating operating options, transferring experience to new situations and reducing uncertainty in long-term forecasts are described. Specific examples are included illustrating the potential of the simulation.

is placed in a waste rock dump, which is usually later reshaped to be erosionally stable, initiate and sustain vegetation and ultimately integrate with the surrounding undisturbed landscape. However, it is unclear how this exhumed material will weather and evolve for most sites. Also, there is a lack of data on the weathering of post-mining materials. If weathering is better understood, then there is the potential to improve rehabilitation outcomes. To improve predictions of the evolution of soil properties and weathering-limited erosion, estimating the rate at which fine, transportable material is produced from the weathering of larger, non-transportable particles and the resultant fragment size distribution and how that distribution evolves over time is necessary. This study examines the weathering process for four different coalmine waste rock materials for a Bowen Basin, Queensland site. Materials obtained from various areas of the coalmine were subjected to cyclic wetting and drying and heating and cooling. Particle size distribution and other material properties were explored after each experimental cycle to ascertain how the material changes during the experimental cycles. The particle size distribution data of wet and dry cycles were used as input data in a numerical weathering model to explore the dynamics of the weathering process for each material sample. A Monte Carlo framework was employed to assess the geometry of the weathering products, weathering rate and the number of daughter particles produced within a weathering cycle. Then the SSSPAM Landscape Evolution Model was used to evaluate the influence of weathering on erosion and landscape evolution of a post mining landform. SSSPAM simulations with: (i) active weathering and (ii) without weathering were run for each material. The erosion rate and the overall landform structure were then compared between weathering and non-weathering simulations.

Pike River Coal Limited (PRCL) is opening a new underground coal mine in the Paparoa Ranges north-east of Greymouth. To access the coal reserves, PRCL have had to build a 13 km access road through regrowth and virgin forest, and appointed McConnell Dowell Constructors Limited, with URS New Zealand Limited as their consulting engineers, to construct the final access link: a 2.3 km long, 5.5 m wide and 4.5 m high incline tunnel. This paper discusses the logistical issues of construction in an isolated pristine forest in mountain land and how they were addressed. It provides an overview of the 90 per cent complete tunnel and how challenging rock conditions have been mastered. It outlines briefly the remaining work which is construction of pit bottom workings where the mine infrastructure will be housed and construction of a 110 m deep, 4.0 m diameter, vertical ventilation shaft.

The stirred mill is regarded as one of the most efficient devices for micronising materials and has come to be actively used for preparation of fine particles. Recently, the demand for ultrafine particles was increased in many kinds of industries. In this paper, autogenous grinding to get submicron particles based on mutual friction feed material has been carried out using a stirred mill. The mill used was made of stainless steel and its volume was about 5.5 litres, and has 12 impeller blades. Sample used was limestone. In the present work, two operating parameters such as stirring speed and feed size of limestone were considered. The ground products were sieved in the size range from feed size to 325 mesh (45 lun), and from 45 to 0.17 pm the size distributions were measured by a laser diffraction and scattering method. The progress of grinding was evaluated by the increasing amount of submicron particles in products. As a result, the rotational speed of impeller with the minimum energy consumption to produce submicron particles was observed. It was found that the autogenous grinding with a stirred mill is an effective method for producing submicronized limestone.

If a straight line should be drawn on the map (Fig 1) through the northern half of the South Island of New Zealand, from Mt. Domett in the north to Arthur's Pass in the south, and another line drawn parallel to it and at a distance of ten miles to thewest, according to the topographic scale, it will be found that within the belt thus drawn across the country all the most important mines, past and present, of the outh Island are situated, with the exception of a few in Otago.The most important product of this tract being gold, and Reefton, the most important southern mining field, being situated at about it central portion, the zone may aptly be termed 'The Great Reefton Gold Belt.'The occurrence of so many gold mines along this particular strip of country is not at all a matter of chance, but is the outcome of cause and effect. Due to increased production of steel in India, the thrust is now on iron ore producers not only to enhance productivity from existing mines, but to look also into alternative resources, like lean grade iron ores such as banded haematite quartz (BHQ)/banded haematite jasper (BHJ), which are available in abundance but not yet utilised for want of suitable process technology. In this context, BHJ ore from the Bellary-Hospet sector was collected and subjected to detailed physical, chemical and mineralogical characterisation and beneficiation studies. The as-received sample was found to occur physically as alternating layers of haematite and jasper. The chemical analysis of the sample was 41.20 per cent Fe, 39.10 per cent SiO2 and 0.86 per cent Al2O3. Based on the mineralogical observation, haematite was found to be the lone ore mineral and jasper was the major gangue mineral. The microscopic observations revealed that the ore minerals liberate at a top size of 0.150 mm. Guided by the characterisation results, indicative tests were conducted using gravity and magnetic separation equipment, namely, Floatex«, gravity slime table and wet high intensity magnetic separator (WHIMS). The results indicate that it is possible to upgrade the sample by both gravity and magnetic separation techniques. However, the WHIMS results indicate that jasper grains report to the concentrate at higher gauss intensities. Therefore, based on the encouraging gravity separation results and the availability of new design spirals for treating fine particles, the applicability of gravity spirals for beneficiating BHJ in the liberation size range of -0.150 mm was studied. The sample was ground to a top size of 0.150 mm and was subjected to preconcentration using wash waterless spirals. Tests were conducted at different feed rates, pulp densities and splitter positions. The results indicate that it is possible to upgrade the sample from a feed grade of 41.20 per cent Fe to a preconcentrate ranging from 46 per cent to 62 per cent Fe with a yield ranging from 19 per cent to 55 per cent. The obtained preconcentrate was then subjected to a cleaning stage by using a combination of wash water and wash waterless spirals. The test results indicate that it is possible to obtain a final concentrate assaying 65.75 per cent Fe and 4.75 per cent SiO2 with a yield of 25.9 per cent and an iron recovery of 41.31 per cent. It was concluded that further test work is necessary to increase the recovery and improve the product specification.

A number of standards and guidance materials currently exist to assist equipment designers. The ISO process, however, is a formal process and change often lags behind technology development. In some cases, this may result in weak or ineffective standards that need to be written in general terms to accommodate future technology developments, meaning some standards may only establish minimum requirements and not be overly helpful to equipment designers, in particular when designing for workforce diversity and inclusivity. By contrast, advisory information as issued by various mining regulatory bodies is able to respond more quickly to changes in technology. Standards do however have a safety and productivity focus providing design consistency between equipment manufacturers, a basis for auditing purposes, assistance in mining regulation and compliance, and in the development and application of safety management systems. As an example of challenges facing equipment designers, ISO3411 (2020) provides data approximating the 5th, 50th and 95th percentile of the ‘earth-moving machinery operator population’ for numerous static dimensions relevant to the design of earth-moving equipment. These data are then utilised in ISO6682 (2020) to provide recommendations regarding the location of controls. Attempting to utilise the data provided in ISO3411 (or other sources of static anthropometric data) creates further challenges for equipment designers, in that reference percentiles is problematic for design purposes. There is no ‘5th or 95th percentile operator’ as individuals vary along each dimension (Robinette and Hudson, 2006). Although dimensions have some degrees of correlation, when multiple dimensions are considered, the range of individuals which fall within a given range on all dimensions reduces substantially. For example, only about 82 per cent of individuals in a population will fall within the 5th to 95th percentile ranges for both height and weight. The more dimensions are considered, the smaller the range of people who actually ‘fit’ the description.

This paper discusses the changes that new legislation and regulations are making to the industry and current research that is producing technologies to make mining safer and will likely impact the future of mining.

CaF2 has been a common constituent in a wide variety of welding fluxes, including those used for submerged arc welding (SAW). The widespread use of CaF2 stems from its role in lowering the liquidus temperature as well as the viscosity of the molten slag that covers the weld pool. However, the harmful effect of fluoride evaporation from molten flux, on the environment as well as the health of the users is becoming increasingly evident over the years. This has led to increasing attention towards reducing the CaF2 concentration in the fluxes. The fluoride-free formulations face the challenging requirement to maintain the thermo-physical properties (viscosity, liquidus temperature etc) like those observed in fluoride-containing fluxes. In the present work, three fluxes with compositions in the CaO-MnO-SiO2-Al2O3 system have been identified as promising alternatives to the CaF2-rich fluxes. However, the thermo-physical properties of any such flux need to be comparable to CaF2-based commercial SAW fluxes before it can be adopted for regular use. The single hot thermocouple technique (SHTT) has been used by several researchers in the past as a tool for observing the melting and solidification characteristics of fluxes. This device has been developed in the present work and is used to characterise the melting behaviour of the fluxes. The measured solidus and liquidus temperatures from SHTT were compared with the results from differential thermal analysis (DTA) and simulations using the FactSage™ software for a comprehensive understanding. In spite of having a slight deviation in the measured values from the multiple techniques, the results obtained from these multiple methods show that the selected compositions could be potential CaF2 free alternative welding fluxes.

The majority of published material regarding the operation of crushing machinery is concerned with simulation of performance rather than design of equipment. The reason underlying the bias in published material relates to why research is carried out and who undertakes the research. Two distinct types of research can be identified: 1. Internal research by crusher manufacturers - generally related to mechanical design, value engineering and to the commercial realities attached to sales demands. Any work on basic crusher geometry or rock/machine interaction is of a sensitive nature and rarely enters the public domain. 2. Academic research - mostly confined to modelling of crusher performance and simulation. This is not because of any bias, but crusher design requires access to manufacturers data or at least an in-depth understanding of crusher design, which is rarely available. The crushing of rock is a complicated problem. It involves three aspects; the machine geometry, the material composition (type of rock/feed size distribution) and the machine/rock interaction. The machine geometry is often ignored in empirical mineral processing simulations, while the response of different feed materials is only nominally addressed in machine specifications provided by manufacturers. The manner by which the machine produces a stress field and causes different types of breakage for different rocks (or the machine/rock interaction) is sadly neglected by both groups. All three aspects must be considered collectively to successfully understand and model the entire crushing process. 1. The importance of crushing is often underestimated. In mining and mineral processing the invisibility of the crushing process is understandable as it merely provides a coarse reduction stage prior to the intricacies of mineral extraction. However in the quarrying industry crushing and screening basically provide the finished product. A brief overview of the quarrying industry shows the importance of crushing. Figure 1 gives production figures for most of the western European countries, Australia and the USA.

The paper provides an overview of the development and content of APCOM symposia since their inception in 1961. This development is set within the context of the academic environment in which much of the research published at APCOM symposia is conducted. This environment includes rigorous external assessment of research quality at national levels and against international benchmarks, which carries significant consequences for funding and for the continued existence of the academic minerals industry disciplines. Adverse consequences that undermine the academic provision of mining and resource engineering will impact negatively on the minerals industry by reducing the level of research and education resources available to it.The traditional reductionist approach to research is contrasted with the inter-disciplinary approach that is required to address the complex systems problems that the minerals industry will have to address to ensure its technical, economical and environmental sustainability. Such an approach offers a means of raising research profiles, of establishing mutually beneficial academic-industry engagement and provides an opportunity for APCOM to take a lead role in identifying the research and development agenda for the future

The technology of flotation recovery of silver from the residue of a zinc plant is described. The peculiarity of this technology is a preliminary pulp conditioning in sodium chloride solution in the presence of aluminum metal under high temperature. In this process the silver is converted to the metallic phase and then floated with the usual sulphydryl collectors. A variant using a combined technology is also described, in which before flotation is performed about 50 per cent of silver is leached. The total silver recovery with the combined technology comes up to 90 - 94 per cent.

Slab-buckle failures in coal sequences involve thin slab deformation in strata dipping parallel to the footwall, and are a consequence of both unloading and the weak nature of the thinly bedded rock mass. Methods of modelling and predicting such occurrences include: +        a conceptual model using a base friction table, +        a mathematical model using the Euler solution for column and beam bending (after Goodman, 1980), and +        computer analysis techniques such as UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code after Cundall and Hart, 1993).   Slab-buckle failures have the potential to seriously disrupt production because of their volume and rapidity, and to endanger both equipment and personnel working on the pit floor.   In July 2004 a large slab-buckle failure occurred overnight after a new batter and bench had been formed at the Malvern Hills Opencast Mine in inland Canterbury. This involved the entire length of the pit (85m along strike) when a 2m thick intact slab with a total volume of ~3500m3 translated down dip 6.2m on the base of a thin coal seam to form a pronounced buckle at the toe. The coal measures consist of finely laminated mudrocks with multiple coal seams of varying thickness dipping ~45¦ to the southeast, and the opencast mine had been designed with footwall batters formed parallel to bedding with a vertical bench separation of 15m.   Back analysis of the Malvern Hills failure was necessary to investigate the controls on footwall instability, and for future mine design. An engineering geological model was created and samples of the slab material and failure surface were collected and tested to establish the required parameters for use in the Euler solution for column and beam bending. Back analysis using the Euler solution provided unrealistic results that overestimated the overall length of a stable slope by more than 10 times.   No further large scale slab-buckle failures have developed at the mine site, in part because of the slow rate of coal extraction, but precautionary drainage of the footwall slopes has been undertaken to improve overall batter stability. The location of the slab-buckle failure on a critically positioned pre-sheared thin coal seam with full hydrostatic head is considered the most probable cause of the July 2004 failure, rather than inherent instability of the generic bench and batter arrangement adopted. The use of a precedent-based engineering geology approach to future mine design is considered the most appropriate solution in the circumstances.

Utilisation of lower grade (Jigging technology has progressed to a point where SishenÆs 50 to 60 per cent Fe run of mine (ROM) material, once considered as waste, can be beneficiated to produce a saleable 64 per cent Fe product. This has been confirmed through appropriate beneficiation testwork. Consequently, Sishen can now produce saleable product from material not currently included in the resource definition, significantly increasing the resource base of the mine and ensuring higher resource utilisation. Mine planning utilised the geological models to produce detailed planning schedules, reflecting the current and SEP plants separately, optimised to comply with product specifications of both the current and SEP plants and to confirm the viability of the low-grade resources identified as SEP feed material. The SEP product specifications have been derived by optimally matching iron ore market requirements with the revised resource base. A 64.0 per cent Fe lump product and a 63.5 per cent Fe fine product are the optimal SEP products. The SEP plant will be able to produce 10 Mtpa at an average yield of 60 per cent and a lump to fine ratio of 62:38. The plant consists of five major sections: namely crushing, material preparation, beneficiation, final product handling and quality control services. Maximum integration with the current Sishen plant was considered. Kumba currently has an agreement with Transnet to rail up to 23.5 Mtpa through the Sishen Saldanha iron ore export channel (IOEC). Transnet and Sishen Iron Ore Company have signed a Definitive Agreement that deals with the expansion of IOECÆs capacity, which increases KumbaÆs entitlement from 23.5 Mtpa to 35.0 Mtpa. The detailed enviro-legal impact assessments for the SEP indicated that the project has low enviro-legal risk as a result of it being a brownfields project incorporated into the current Sishen operations.

As mining and extraction processes improve and lower grade ores become economic, mining for most ores have extended to depths beneath the zone of weathering oxidation created over geological history. These deeper openings expose sulphidic formations and reduced mineral species as either primary ore or simply as accessory or gangue minerals in the country rock. This is not new, underground mining for primary base metal and gold have long been familiar with these problems, as have coal and uranium miners. The change is simply that the number of mines exposing sulphidic waste rocks, tailings to the atmosphere and/or leaving behind dewatered sulphidic rock surrounding the mine void has increased the number of sites from where acid mine drainage (AMD) may emanate with consequential problems for the hydrological environment including downstream catchments (Miller et al, 1996). The principles of ecologically sustainable development (Brundtland, 1987) have been more or less ratified by all the developed nations of the world and this has led, amongst other things, to an expansion unprecedented in the research and documentation of means for achieving long-term environmentally acceptable stabilisation of solid wastes of all sorts. These have revealed that AMD problems can be minimised and even reversed in many cases by the integration or co-disposal of biodegradable organic wastes with oxidising sulphidic wastes (Elliott et al, 1996). This paper considers how this might be achieved at mine sites in Australia and the results encountered at some relevant sites.

It is sometimes necessary to resort to extremes in order to call attention to something that is pertinent to safety in mining. When some of the experts in occupational safety talk about this topic, they usually refer to a 'regulation' established by the Romans which stated that, due to the health hazards, usually death, no Romans but only slaves should work in mining. Since the time of the Roman Empire, a lot of ground has been covered in the field of mine safety. Nowadays, it can be said that occupational safety is being seriously addressed, with the result that the number of mining accidents has reduced dramatically, fatalities in this industry are less frequent, and the rate of accidents compared with other activities, such as construction or fanning, is low. This achievement has been possible initially through government legislation and by procedures established by the mining companies themselves. However, the dilemma for government is whether to regulate and if so, how much. It is pleasing to observe that most companies are establishing working procedures which conform with new government legislation, placing strong emphasis on the duty of care for mine employees. There will always be some regulatory aspects of legislation, and perhaps the best example of this is in the use of mine hoists where there are no international or Australian standards, and the regulations applied are of an empirical nature that err on the side of safety.
