Shortly after Denny, Robson, and Irwin published their first paper in 1937, on the prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium, experiments were begun on the practical application of the discovery.It was thought at that time that aluminium powder, to be effective in aluminium therapy, would have to be intimately admixed with siliceous dust at the latter's source. There followed several years of experimental work underground, during which the application of aluminium powder was tested in:(1) Speakers on machine columns, vibrated by drills.(2) Vials placed in drill holes to be blasted.(3) Both homogeneous and heterogeneous mixture with explosives.(4) Packages with tamping.(5) Compressed-air lines.(6) Special compressed-air ejectors for use while drilling and after blasting.(7) The discharge of ventilation fans.(8) The filters of respirators.It was concluded from this research that any adequate method of introducing aluminium powder into a mine atmosphere would require too much extra gear, supervision, and aluminium p;wder, and would interfere unduly with underground routine.Later, animal experiments by Denny, Robson, and Irwin2 showed that aluminium powder provided effective therapy when inhaled independent of silica dust. Therefore, some means of surface treatment was deemed more practical.APPARATUS USED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ALUMINIUM PROPHYLAXIS SAMPLINGA basic requirement was a method of sampling to assess accurately the particle-size concentrations of dispersed aluminium powder. Disequilibrium ratios (U3O8/eU3O8), which assess the degree to which gamma activity represents the uranium content of a sample, have been measured on a representative set of samples from the ore zone of a carnotite ranium deposit located at Yeelirrie, Western Australia. A statistical analysis has been performed to investigate the dependence of the ratios on lithology and on the location of the sample in the orebody. The analysis indicates that dependence on lithology and on position across the orebody is negligible. Samples from the western end of the orebody and those from below the water table level tend to have slightly lower ratios than samples from other positions, although these trends are small compared with a large random variation in the data. The large random variation could result from some redistribution of the daughter isotopes of uranium within the orebody. On the basis of the results from all the samples, the estimated deficiency of uranium relative to radium in the ore zone of the deposit is 11 per cent.

Dioctahedral clay minerals in the volcanic-hosted Golden Cross epithermal Au deposit, New Zealand, have been investigated by petrography, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy/analytical electron microscopy (TEM/AEM) to determine the nature of these minerals in a hydrothermal ore deposit. Heterogeneity in the distribution of dioctahedral clays is observed from the hand-specimen scale to the TEM scale, indicating that primary rock textures and fluid pathways (related to rock type, porosity/permeability and fluid/rock ratios), in addition to temperature, are important factors controlling the distribution. As the proportion of illite in mixed-layer illite/smectite (I/S) decreases, TEM observations show decreasing layer stacking order, parallelism of packets, and packet size, and increasing apparent porosity. AEM structural data show a corresponding decrease in AlIV, AlVI, and K+, and an increase in Si, Ca2+, and Fetotal. The observations of this study indicate that local dioctahedral clay mineral reaction progress is controlled mainly by permeability and structure, but that this is superimposed on a predictable, system-wide clay mineral distribution that is controlled by temperature and fluid/rock ratio.

The Gosowong epithermal Au-Ag deposits, located on the island of Halmahera, North Maluku Province, Indonesia, are owned and operated by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals, a joint venture between Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (25 per cent).The Gosowong deposit was a greenfields discovery in 1994. Subsequent brownfields discoveries, most recently in 2009, have resulted in a total endowment of more than 6 Moz Au. The three main deposits include Gosowong, Toguraci and Kencana, and as of December 2013, production comprised 5.7 Mt Au at 24 g/t for 4.3 Moz with remaining resources of 4.2 Mt Au at 13 g/t for 1.7 Moz.Mineralisation primarily occurs in multistage veins, breccias and stockwork veins, with at least four texturally- and mineralogically-distinct vein events, including: banded crystalline quartz, quartz-adularia, quartz-chlorite and quartz-sulfide stages. Vein mode, texture and mineralogy are zoned around areas of maximum dilation, vein width and vein grade. Within banded quartz-chlorite, grades of >1000 g/t Au are common. Anomalous Au-Ag-Pb-As-Sb-K-Li geochemistry in rocks is commonly associated with the epithermal mineralisation. Four major types of hypogene alteration are recognised at Gosowong: silicification (quartz-illite-adularia-pyrite) within the immediate vein zone, argillic (illite-quartz-pyrite) alteration enveloping the vein zone, advanced argillic (dickite-kaolinite-quartz) alteration above and adjacent to the vein zone and within the overlying Kayasa Formation, and propylitic (chlorite-epidote-albite-calcite-pyrite) alteration within the footwall and distal to the vein zone.CITATION:Fitzpatrick, N, Harris, A, MacCorquodale, F and Wardiman, D, 2015. The treatment plant at Martha Mine was upgraded from a nominal throughput of 110tph (O.93mtpa) to 150tph (1.25mtpa) late 1999. Post-upgrade performance did not meet expectations when treating either the competent primary ore or the clay-rich oxide ore.   ò Plant throughput is constrained by milling capacity when treating the competent primary ore. This is not an issue at present as current plant feed is oxide ore from the top of the open-pit, but will become so in future years as the pit deepens. To counter this future threat, ball mill power has been restored to 1100kW through modifications to the drive train. The addition of a crushing circuit may also be necessary.   ò Plant throughput was originally constrained by thickener and leach/adsorption tank issues when treating the oxide are. Changes to plant equipment and operations has seen the removal of these constraints and throughput on this material is no longer a problem.   The most significant issue facing plant staff at present is the high silver grade and its impact on gold recovery. These high grades impact upon recovery through losses caused by insufficient leach and adsorption capacity. To counter this, the geology, mining, and milling teams are working together to blend the high grade silver zones with lower grade ores - this is seen to be the quickest and most cost effective way to deal with the issue. The plant design has also been evaluated with a view to modifying it to cope with the higher silver grades. The viability of these modifications will depend on cost and time (that is, the length of time to implement any modifications versus the length of time to mine out the high silver zones).

The general goal of passive acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment is to reduce levels of acidity and metals to acceptable levels. Most treatment systems use either an oxidising or a reducing strategy. In oxidising systems, alkalinity is added along with dissolved oxygen; in reducing systems, dissolved oxygen is removed (if present) and then alkalinity is added. It is recommended that small-scale field trials be conducted as part of the methodology of selecting the best remediation strategy at AMD sites. Following successful field trials at the Sullivan Mine AMD, the Pike River Coal Company (PRCC) has shown foresight by using the same system to treat AMD generated as a result of taking a bulk sample of coal at the Pike River coal field. The system reduced acidity by 100 per cent, iron by 99 per cent, aluminium by 96 per cent, nickel by 95 per cent, manganese by 51 per cent and zinc by 99 per cent. The success of this field trial suggests that a system using a reducing strategy may be appropriate for the Pike River Adit AMD site.

Coal seam gas (CSG) exploration and development requires the abstraction of significant amounts of water. This is so because gas desorbtion in coal seams takes place only after aquifer pressure has been reduced by prolonged pumping of aquifer water. CSG waters have a specific geochemical signature which is a product of their formation process. These waters have high bicarbonate, high sodium, low calcium, low magnesium, and very low sulphate concentrations. Additionally, chloride concentrations may be high depending on the coal depositional environment. This particular signature is not only useful for exploration purposes, but it also highlights potential environmental issues that can arise as a consequence of CSG water disposal. Since 2002 L&M Coal Seam Gas Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd, have been involved in exploration and development of CSG in New Zealand. Anticipating disposal of CSG waters as a key issue in CSG development, they have been assessing CSG water quality along with exploration work. Coal seam gas water samples from an exploration well in Maramarua closely follow the geochemical signature associated with CSG waters. This has helped to identify CSG potential, while at the same time assessing the chemical characteristics and water generation processes in the aquifer. Neutral pH and high alkalinity suggest that these waters could be easily managed once the sodium and chloride concentrations are reduced to acceptable levels.

Drilling in the south of the Rapahoe Sector at Greymouth Coalfield has demonstrated the existence of thick coal seams in the upper Rewanui Member. Seam correlation is handicapped by complex lithostratigraphy and laterally variable geophysical log profiles. An integrated investigation of coal measure stratigraphy, coal petrology, and proximate analyses, suggests a feasible model whereby most of the major seam intersections belong to a single horizon. Coal properties vary laterally in response to original swamp conditions, which are believed to have ranged from well-drained to ponded. A new model of peat accumulation is proposed for the northern Rapahoe Sector, whereby Upper Rewanui peat accumulation occurred on a flood plain between the levees of a major south southwest-flowing fluvial system in the east and the toe of a western alluvial fan.

An integrated mine system must be capable of displaying and reporting valuable information that can be used to easily understand, manage and take action on the key parameters being reported.One of the key aspects of integration is the standardisation of the mine information up to a level capable of adapting the main characteristics of past projects at the mine and enforcing the same or higher standards for newer projects being developed.At the El Teniente mine, photogrammetry is used to map the advance of horizontal developments, and the constructed 3D representation of each face is then used by the geologists to obtain structural information about the areas being photographed.The mine realised that valuable mining information could also be extracted from the photogrammetry being applied, with three possible areas of development envisioned.The first area was creating a link between the developments being planned on a yearly and monthly basis and matching them with plan sections of the 3D developments of the system to account for any deviations.The second area was to use vertical sections of the 3D developments to estimate the overbreak of the excavations in different areas of the mine.The third area was the provision of a more detailed analysis of the sections so that they could provide information on the thickness of the shotcrete being applied.This paper presents the different alternatives being used and examines how the project is currently being developed and managed at the mine. The central Nanling region in South China experienced multistage granite intrusive events and corresponding metallogenic processes during the Early Yanshanian period (190–140 Ma). In this study, a wide variety of published data on age determination, petrological characteristics, major and trace elements compositions, whole rock Sr–Nd contents and zircon Hf isotopic composition of the representative granite composites were systematically collected to estimate their cooling-uplift rates, granite evolution processes and mineral deposit formation. These granites have been classified into two groups based on their age and geochemical variations: Group 1 (180–165 Ma) and Group 2 (165–150 Ma). Major and trace element geochemistry suggests that Group 2 experienced more intense magmatic evolution and differentiation than Group 1. In addition, Group 1 granitoids are classified as A1-type alkaline rocks with faster cooling and uplift rates, whereas Group 2 granites are considered as A2-type aluminous rocks with slower cooling and ascent rates. Furthermore, the Group 1 granitoids have younger Nd and Hf two-stage model ages but higher eNd(t) and eHf(t) values, indicating influence from crust–mantle interaction. In contrast, the Group 2 granites show different values, suggesting stronger upper crustal contamination or assimilation. The slowly cooled and ascended Group 2 granites experienced much heavier crustal contamination (or assimilation) and crystal fractionation, contributing to the large W–Sn mineralisation in the central Nanling region. Development of Grindability Tests Based on Direct Measurement of Energy Nowadays, for the characterisation of the grindability different grindability indices - Bond-work index (Wi), Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) or Zeisel specific grindability (Wt) - are used. Generally, the grindability tests are carried out under relatively simplified circumstances, in a special dry batch mill with defined feed size material until prescribed conditions are reached at room temperature. However, in the fine- and ultra fine grinding, which is a frequent task (fly ash, tailings, alumina, etc), a fine material (<50 - 200 ¦m) is usually ground down to the few micrometers. The conventional grindability testing methods and apparatuses (Bond-, Hardgrove-, Zeisel-processes) for their determination, although, are not suitable directly to measure the grindability of such fine materials, since the maximal particle size of the feed material (0.5 - 3 mm) to be tested is much higher. One of the important goals of the research carried out in our Institute was to develop the novel grindability testing methods, which are suitable for the fine and ultra fine grinding, and additionally provide the possibility for the fast determination of the grindability. In order to realise the above aim the conventional Bond- and Hardgrove- mills were modified in order to directly measure the grinding work. In particular, the Hardgrove-mill was equipped with a simple torque-meter (load cell). The Bond-mill was rigged with a digital electric power measurer. The systematic experiments were carried out parallel in both mills using the conventional and the developed methods. Finally the results of both were compared. The measuring results have proved that the Bond-work index can be determined based on the developed methods. The new grindability testing methods were applied successfully in several industrial research tasks for the determination of the specific grinding energy and the Bond-work index. These methods can be also used in the industrial practice for the control of the grinding process.

The Mahakipawa gold deposit is located 21 km northwest of Blenheim. It became the site of a small hardrock gold rush in 1889 following nearby alluvial gold discoveries in 1888. The study investigates the geology of the area of hard rock mining in the vicinity between Cullens and Waikakaho Creeks. The Marlborough Schist which hosts the gold depos, it consists of polydeformed greenschist facies quartzofeldspathic psammitic, pelitic and volcanigenic schist.

This paper reviews recent positive developments in Europe on the regulation of gold mining. However, it also examines the problem that while gold projects may be bankable and technically and environmental defensible, the odds tend to be stacked against granting of an environmental permit. The historic background to this situation is examined and current developments and initiatives are critically analysed. Standards and benchmarks for the industry have been established across the community and these have a strong influence in European Union accession (and aspiring) states as well. While this is welcome in regard to improving environmental performance, it also represents a significant milestone with mining (and particularly gold mining) now æon the mapÆ as a legitimate enterprise, a situation that was patently not the case prior to 2003. At the project level, very frequently, the difficult biophysical problems are addressed and satisfactorily dealt with according to the new regulations, but still there are problems regards trust and acceptance that underpin a æsocial licenceÆ. What goes wrong and how can companies deal with the social/environmental issues that lead to entrenched views and concerns, irrespective of any amount of demonstration of good practice and corporate social responsibility? What is the role of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) and are they as accountable and responsible as they should be? The findings presented draw upon recent experience with the environmental permitting of projects in Spain, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia on behalf of Australian, Canadian and British companies as well as international funding institutions.

Known epithermal deposits in the Coromandel region belong to the low-sulphidation type, represented by three subtypes: (1) andesite-hosted epithermal Au-Ag, (2) rhyolite-hosted epithermal Au-Ag, and (3) andesite-hosted polymetallic veins. Paleo-depths for a range ofdeposits are estimated using various features including: paleo-surface indicators (e.g. sinters), hydrostatic pressures estimated from homogenisation temperature measurements on fluid inclusions, and alteration mineralogy. Paleo-depth estimates to the base of the ore zone for the rhyolite-hosted Coromandel deposits are in the range 200 to 500 m. Andesite-hosted Au-Ag deposits have more variable paleo-depths, and are deeper (up to 950 m) in those deposits with base metals at depth. The majority of Coromandel Au-Ag deposits have limited depth extents (<200 m) of economic grade mineralisation, although Waihi and Karangahake are notable exceptions with depth extents of 575 m and 700 m respectively. Limited depth extents of economic ore are a feature of epithermal systems worldwide and are commonly attributed to gold deposition from boiling fluids. Under hydrostatic conditions in epithermal/geothermal systems, boiling in an up-flowing hydrothermal fluid is controlled by the boiling point for depth (BPD) curve. From fluid inclusion studies of many low-sulphidation epithermal systems, deposition of electrum in economic concentrations appears to be confined to a temperature window of 260 to 180¦C. This means that for dilute, gas-poor fluids that follow the BPD curve, gold deposition is limited to a vertical depth zone of about 400 m, with its upper boundary at about 100 m below the ground surface. The greater depth extent at Waihi and Karangahake, can be explained by mixing of/a deep, hot (300¦C) fluid with cooler (c. 200¦C) heated ground waters. This has the effect of lowering the 260¦C isotherm by up to 300 m, thereby increasing the depth range of economic grade gold deposition within the 260 to 180¦Cwindow of electrum deposition.

Prior to rehabilitation, plant cover on quartz gravel overburden at Wangaloa coal mine was highly patchy. Stabilisation techniques have since considerably altered the condition of the main overburden yet deposits in the east and west remain largely intact. On the eastern overburden, three distinct zones of revegetation have naturally developed: Zone 1 represents a dense plant cover, Zone 2 a patchy cover and Zone 3 a sparse cover of isolated plants. Aerial photographs show much of the eastern overburden was deposited between 1940 and 1960s. Yet we found that the temporal scale of deposition did not wholly account for the differences observed in vegetation development. To investigate other influential factors, we set up 12 study plots using four replicates in each vegetation zone. The diversity and density of plants in each plot were measured to quantify the degree of vegetation development. Samples from the substrate in each plot were collected using soil cores to a depth of 10 cm. Cores were analysed for indicators of nutrient availability, metal content and physical composition. We found that substrate chemistry varied between individual study plots, but showed little difference overall along the vegetation gradient. Substrate physical differences were much greater. The ratio of coarse quartz pebbles: fines was considerably higher in Zone 3 than other zones, and within zones where plants were not growing. Bulk density also increased successively from Zone 1 - 3. We found clear evidence for the reversed stratigraphy of excavation superimposed over the time scale of deposition, and the corresponding nature of fine particles. The rate of revegetation was therefore highly dependent upon the substrate composition of the last surface deposit from the dumping truck. Our data suggests an optimum ratio exists between inert coarse material and a fine matrix for progressive natural vegetation development on mine substrates.

The Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) is located 120 km south east of Perth, Western Australia. The operation is managed by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd and mined by contractor Henry Walker Eltin (HWE). The mine has been operating since 1987 with ore extracted from a series of pits along strike. Ore is contained within the basement rock, which is overlain by a cap rock layer and transition zone. Cap rock and basement zones require blasting.As the mine neared completion, a high-grade deposit was discovered within 50 m of an existing Western Power substation and 100 m from the processing mill. The substation provides power to the Boddington area and is a back-up power supply to the city of Perth. Due to the delicate nature of the transformers located at the power station, overhead power lines and the mill, blasting in the area was considered very high risk. As such blasting needed to be controlled for flyrock, airblast and most importantly peak vibration and frequency limits which had the potential to damage the transformers.The mine was due for closure in March 2001. The decision to mine the pit was based on its high grade, ability to be blended with lowering grades from other pits and changing of the processing technique with the expansion. This decision extended the life for a further six months.Due to the high potential risks a detailed risk assessment was conducted by Orica, Worsley and Henry Walker Eltin. The completed assessment and the major design parameters were presented to Western Power for approval. The ability to reduce the blasting risk was focused on limiting of vibration through controlling maximum charge initiated per delay, blast timing and firing direction, and other innovative control measures. OricaÆs SHOTPlan« and Sabrex« computer modelling packages were used to predict the outcome of blasts.The success of this project has opened the doors for other high risk blasting projects, which otherwise may be left unmined.

Analysis of Electrostatic Separation for Rutile Cleaning Duty Using a Plate Electrode Assisted High Tension Roll Separator A plate assisted electrostatic high tension roll separator has been used for the removal of impurity mineral grains from a rutile rich product stream. A laboratory study and a subsequent production study explored the effect of machine conditions with a view to the optimisation of the separation performance of the separator. The performance requirement was that the TiO2 grade in the non-conductor stream was to be less than ten per cent whilst at the same time the ZrO2 grade in the conductor stream had to be less than 0.5 per cent at mass recoveries of greater than 90 per cent to the conductor stream and less than 5 per cent to the non-conductor stream. Mineralogy data was utilized to determine the feasibility of achieving the production targets with the feed under study. Since the feed stream mineralogy was dominated by rutile, leucoxene and zircon, it was possible to use an approximation to the actual mineral assemblage as well as the raw X-ray fluorescence data to understand the separation duty of the Carrara machine. Since there were four conflicting criteria used for the performance requirement, an index was devised that incorporated all the requirements simultaneously. This new index was the sum of the squares of the difference between the achieved and desired values, weighted with respect to the variance of each variable. If the desired value for a particular criterion had been met its contribution to the sum was set to zero, no matter how well the criterion had been met. For the production machine the strict requirements were almost achieved. As expected, the achievement of the target performance was dependent of the feed conditions at the time of measurement. This paper reports the results of this study.

The stringent marketing specifications included in coal contracts mean that coal producers must supply cleaner and more consistent coal than may have been formerly required. Geostatistics has the potential to aid in the accurate estimation of the washability characteristics of coal. A prediction method, the Kriged Service Variable Approach has been developed.A Computer Aided Drafting and Design system has proved useful in the development and application of the approach. The geostatistical approach has been tested against coal geological and borehole data and applications discussed.

The only simple sulphide mineral of antimony of importance is stibnite, SbS3, containing 71·8% antimony when pure. It is lead-grey, has a densityof 4·5 to 4·6 and melts at 546°C. It is both friable and sectile (Hardness 2 on Moh's scale) and, as a result, slimes very readily during milling.It is commonly associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite other minerals occurring with stibnite in minor quantities are chalcopyrite, galena, and scheelite. The latter mineral occurs in sufficient quantity at the Yellow Pine Mine, Stibnfte, Idaho, to justify the production of a scheelite concentrate.Stibnite mayor may not contain gold. Other minerals such as pyrite or arsenopyrite may contain gold. At Wiluna at the main mine nearly all the gold is asociated with arsenopyrite the stibnite being almost free from gold, whilst at the Moonlight Mine both arsenopyrite and stibnite carry gold.The mineral, tetrahedrite, which is a complex sulphide of copper and antimony; must also be considered an economic source of these two metals.Part of the copper may be replaced by iron, zinc; silver; or mercury, whilst part of the antimony is often replaced by arsenic.CLASSIFICATION OF ANTIMONIAL GOLD ORESFor the purposes of this paper antimonial gold ores may be conveniently classified as follows: CLASS 1. Ores from which a satisfactory gold extraction may be obtained by fine grinding, followed by cyanidation and which contain insufficient antimony to justify tIie production of an antimonial concentrate.CLASS 2. (a) Ores in which a satisfactory gold extraction may be obtained by straight cyanidation, but which contain sufficient antimony to justify the production of an antimonial concentrate.CLASS 2. The Favona low-sulfidation epithermal deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield is less than one kilometre southeast of the world-class Waihi deposit. The veins are hosted by Miocene andesite of the Waipupu Formation, have a total strike length of over 900 m, a vertical extent of at least 350 m and are on average 1-3 m wide. Individual veins have been traced for 200 m with vein widths up to 25 m. The dominant vein textures are massive, crustiform and colloform banded veins and vein breccias, with subsidiary textures including comb, zonal, flamboyant, lattice-bladed, ghost-bladed, microbotryoidal, feathery, ripple and dune, and mosaic. Quartz is the dominant gangue mineral in the veins at Favona. Accessory gangue minerals include pyrite, chlorite, adularia, illite, calcite, and apatite. Electrum is the only gold-bearing mineral and is associated with acanthite, tetrahedrite, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and rare galena. Whole rock geochemical analyses indicate that gold grades correlate with textures/vein types. The highest gold and silver grades are associated with vein breccias and banded veins, with the former containing 28 g/t Au and 136 g/t Ag on average. To date, veins with significant base metal sulfide minerals, and massive and crystalline quartz veins lack significant precious metals (Au and Ag), except for one banded base metal sulfide-rich vein at Favona. An overall zonation of the veins exists, with base metal sulfide minerals dominant at depth (1050 m RL) of the system are characterised by massive quartz veins.Fluid inclusions from a total of 31 quartz, amethyst, and platy calcite veins reveal homogenisation temperatures of ~190-250¦C, with final ice melting temperatures between 0.0 and -0.8. Ice melting temperatures correspond to apparent salinities of 18O value of the water that formed these veins is approximately -4.3 per mil, which is similar to meteoric water-dominated, near neutral chloride fluids in geothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone.
