The North Texas district, as herein defined, includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Kiiox, Montague, Wichita, Wil-barger, and Young. Jack and Young Counties are included for the first time so that this district will correspond with District No. 9 of the Texas Railroad Commission. This area covers generally the crest and south flank of a system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift. The oil and gas accumulations along this feature are in traps, which, although localized by structures incident to the regional uplift, usually are modified by stratigraphic changes in the sediments. The structural deformation caused by the Red River uplift is modified by the Rend arch, which is a broad anticline plunging northward from the Llano uplift in central Texas through Young and into Archer Counties. The fields in southern Archer, southeastern Baylor, southwestern Clay, and western Jack Counties arc on the extreme north end and along the flanks of the Bend arch and have generally the same type of oil and gas accumulation as the other fields in this district. Recent exploration has been along the flanks of the Fort Worth syncline, which is east of the Bend arch and south of the Red River uplift and extends into southeastern Clay and southwestern Montague Counties and along the eastern part of Jack County. The larger part of past oil and gas produc- tion has come from Pennsylvanian strata, with less important amounts lrom the Permian, and minor quantities from the Mississippian and Ordovician. Developments during 1943 About 1100 wells were drilled in the district during 1943 and more than 500 oil wells were completed, an increase from 1942. of approximately 12 per cent in the number of successful drilling operations of the total wells drilled. The addition of Jack and Young Counties to this district accounts for part of this increase, almost 150 wells being completed in the two counties. Production increased slightly over the previous year as a result of an increase in the number of producing wells and a greater demand for this high-gravity, sweet crude oil. The average depth of discovery wells was about 400 ft. deeper than in 1942. Although more discoveries produced from horizons below the base of the Strawn series than from those above the Straw, the deeper horizons, including the Bend series of the Pennsylvanian, the Mississippian limestone and Ellenburger of the Ordo-vician, largely were dissappointing from the viewpoint of major additions to oil reserves. The largest single addition to the reserves was in the basal Strawn sand in the Walnut Bend field, Cooke County. During the year, 31 wells were completed, both in the field and as cxtensions. The most active arca Was Jack County, in which five fields or potential fields were discovered, although only 44 oil wells were completed.

LEWIS EMANUEL YOUNG was elected a Director of the A.I.M.E. at the last Annual Meeting as a representative of District '4, including. Ohio, West Virginia, and western. Pennsylvania and New York. He also represents the Coal Division, in which industry lie has actively participated- for nearly twenty years. Dr. Young was horn in Topeka, Kan., Oct. 1, 1873, received mining degrees from Penn State and ,-Iowa. State, and a Ph.D., from Illinois. The first part of his professional life was spent in teaching first as instructor in mining at Iowa State, second .as professor of mining at the Colorado School' of Mines, third as director of the School of Mines and Metallurgy at Rolla, Mo., and finally he taught business

This chapter deals with those sands employed by foundries for the manufacture of cores and molds used in the casting of such common metals as steel, gray iron, ductile iron, aluminum-based alloys, and copper-based alloys. Most metal is cast in "green sand" molds in which the sand mixture, consisting primarily of silica, clay, and water, forms a plastic material. This plastic material is rammed around a pattern in a split box called a flask, then the box is separated, the pattern is withdrawn, and the metal is poured. These green sand molds are broken apart when the metal has solidified. The sand is then remixed and a new mold made for the next casting. To a lesser extent silica sand is mixed with resins or oils and, after forming, the mixture is hardened by either heat or chemical reaction. In any case, the foundry mold or core is used just once before being broken up and remixed for manufacturing another core or mold. By far the greatest consumption in the foundry is of those types of sand high in silica, low in clay (under 0.5%), and occurring in numerous locations thoughout the United States. Consumption End Uses Foundry sands fall into four distinct categories: silica sand, lake sand, bank sand, and natural molding sand. Silica sand is a general term used to describe washed, graded, dried, and cooled clay-free sands which are found in many parts of the United States. They generally contain 90 to 100% silica but vary greatly in chemical analysis and grain structure. Lake sand is the sand dredged from Lake Michigan or dug from the dunes bordering that lake. Bank sand is composed primarily of silica grain but containing up to 5% clay. It is shipped in both the damp and dry state but the normal processing of bank sand consists only of drying and scalping. Occasionally two different grades of bank sand are blended prior to or during loading. Natural molding sand is a term used to describe a sand containing sufficient clay as mined to be suitable for molding purposes. Clay content may vary from 10 to 24% with the balance of the material consisting primarily of silica sand. These sands range in fineness from one peaked on the 20 mesh to one which contains more than 50% of the particles passing the 270 mesh. Lake sands are relatively coarse and are used in great quantities for the production of automotive castings. Bank sands and natural molding sands are gradually phasing out as the production of castings becomes more a science and less an art. The vast majority of foundry sands used today are those known as the silica sands and lake sands. Foundry sands are used in two basic ways. The majority are used in the green or uncured state with the balance used in the cured or set state. Green sand is grain bonded with clay and contains varying amounts of water to plasticize the clay in order to bond the grains together. Green sand is either naturally bonded or "synthetic" sand. The naturally bonded molding sands are generally found in the Hudson River Valley of New York State, Cumberland County in New Jersey, and in Tennessee and Mississippi. Synthetic sand is molding sand compounded in the individual foundry. It is made up primarily of graded silica sand, western or southern bentonite, water, and carbonaceous and/or cellulosic materials. Green sand is used primarily in making molds. The use of naturally bonded green sand has been declining for many years, primarily because naturally bonded sands are more difficult for the foundryman to find and control. This paper gives the composition of the iron and slag at different stages in the " air-furnace" process of preparing " hard metal," or white castriron, for conversion into malleable cast-iron by annealing. The details of the process are given in an appendix. One of us had been trying for years to work some chemist of some of our malleable-iron plants up to a degree of enthusiasm which would lead him to make such an investigation. It would have had the advantage of the greater familiarity with the conditions which one habitually on the spot must have. Failing in this, he made use of an opportunity which presented itself of taking samples here represented, with such fairness as the conditions permitted, holding firmly that a rough approximation to the truth is better than the complete lack of data, or that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. We hope that this attempt may stimulate others effectively to duplicate this work, and thus correct or confirm it. Our results are shown in Table I. and graphically in Figs. 1 arid 2. Discussion.—At the time when the first two samples were taken, the metal and slag were still too sluggish to permit fair sampling, and not until sample 6 were the conditions really favorable, because at the time of the fourth sample the metal was not fully melted, and even at the time of sample 5 it was still sluggish. Indeed, the slag was probably very heterogeneous throughout, because it took up silica and alumina rapidly from the bottom, and because it was so siliceous as to be sluggish at this relatively low temperature. This hetero-geneousness is exaggerated in the two samples of slag 8, apparently by the great viscosity due to its extraordinary acidity. Note that the manganous oxide of one sample is about two and

(Presented by invitation at a meeting of the Spokane Local Section of the institute, Feb. 17, 1912.) THE Pilares de Nacozari mine is located in Sonora, 75 miles south of Douglas, Ariz. The town of Douglas is on the International Boundary and is the place at which the ores from the Bisbee mines are smelted. The Moctezuma Copper Co. owns the mines at Nacozari, and the copper-concentrates shipped to the Copper Queen smelter, at Douglas, make a good smelting-mixture with the Bisbee ores. The Moctezuma Copper Co. and the Copper Queen smelter at Douglas, as well as the railroad from Douglas to Nacozari, are owned by the Phelps Dodge Co. The ore-deposit occurs in the form of a large ellipse with a major axis of approximately 2,000 ft. and a minor axis of about 600 ft., the major axis bearing about 90 W. of N. The whole of this ellipse is more or less mineralized; the surface being principally an iron gossan with some occasional copper-stains. Below the oxidized zone, which is not more than 50 ft. deep, the minerals are pyrite and chalcopyrite, with occasional seams of chalcocite, the latter being rare. There appears to be no well-marked zone of secondary enrichment, the oxidized gossan over the greater part of the deposit changing suddenly to what is apparently the original unaltered ore. The copper-values are concentrated around the perimeter of the ellipse, and it is principally around this perimeter that the mining is done. The ore mined averages a little more than 3 per cent. of copper, with a small amount of silver, less than an ounce per ton. Some ore of considerably higher grade than this has been shipped, however, but the above average is of the mill-run. The ore is wider near the two ends of the ellipse than along the sides, and is mined in some cases to a width exceeding 200 ft. The conventional cyclic system of deep-level mining by drilling and blasting gives rise to an inadequate degree of stope sorting when mining thin reefs. This results in poor utilization of the capital facilities of a mine in the form of shafts, haulages, airways, and associated equipment. Continuous and controlled removal of the thin gold-bearing portion of the reefs would permit better stope sorting and hence greater utilization of capital facilities. Results of experiments to develop hard-rock cutting machines for mining are reported and the benefits which could be derived from their use are discussed. Mining, from exploration through refining, is essentially a process of sorting in which the payable mineral, or metal, is progressively separated from the other constituents of the earth's crust with which it was originally associated. This takes place more distinctly at each step of the operation. What is it that determines the degree to which sorting should be carried out at each of the several steps comprising a whole mining operation? The formal answer is that degree of sorting at each step which results in the lowest overall cost for the complete separation. In practice, individual steps are chosen from those available in current technology, each of which effects a degree of sorting such that the quantity of material which must be sorted in the succeeding step is economically acceptable. It follows that any new technological development has repercussions throughout the whole mining operation and, more important, that the solution to excessive costs in any one step of the operation may lie not in improving the costly operation itself so much as in increasing the degree of sorting preceeding that operation. This concept, particularly in relation to deep-level mining of thin, tabular gold-bearing reefs in South Africa, is discussed here, and the most recent results achieved in the development of hard-rock cutting machines for stoping more selectively than is possible with explosives are presented. Deep-Level Mining Deep-level mining involves operations which are either not encountered, or are of only trivial importance, in near-surface mining. Near-surface, the major operations are those of rock breaking, transport, and milling. In deep-level mining, hoisting, environmental control, and strata control assume major importance. Some idea of the relative magnitude of these operations may be gained by comparing the separate amounts of energy which are required, or which must be controlled, to effect the various operations when, say, mining a tabular deposit 40 in. thick at 8000 ft below surface, Table 1. It is true that the costs of handling a given quantity of energy are not the same for each operation. Nevertheless, Table 1 does emphasize the fact that the operations of hoisting, strata control, and environmental control are of unique and major significance in deep-level mining. In particular, hoisting and environmental control place a heavy load on the reticulation system of the mine—the shafts, haulages, and airways. Typically, a new, deep gold mine with an annual revenue of about $35 million requires a total capital expenditure of about $140 million of which some $100 million is invested in developing and equipping this reticulation system. The ratio between annual turnover and capital invested of about one-quarter is exceptionally low, and it typifies the poor utilization of capital by the current technology of mining hard rock at depth. The average thickness of the reefs in the new South African goldfields varies from 10 to 30 in.,l and even in the thicker reefs the gold is often confined within a small fraction of the nominal thickness. Nevertheless, it is universal practice to mine these reefs at a stope width of about 40 in. or more, so that the quantity of rock broken in the stopes and hoisted out of the mine is between two and ten times the quantity of rock actually carrying a significant amount of gold. The reason for the adoption of such excessive stope widths is to be found in the method of rock breaking by drilling and blasting. The only free surface to which a blast hole can break is the stope face. It follows2 that each hole cannot have a burden in excess of the height of the free face if it is to break satisfactorily. To

A SYMPOSIUM on current. conditions in Mexico, particularly in the oil and mining industries, was a most successful feature of the May meeting of the New York Section of the A.I.M.E. Heath Steele, vice-president of The American Metal Co.. Ltd., with an intimate knowledge of Mexico gave the principal address, and asked that his analysis of the present situation he regarded neither as an endorsement of Mexico's policy nor as the criticism of a disgruntled operator. To explain the .attitude of the great mass of the Mexican people towards recent developments, he first described briefly the political, social, and religious beliefs and customs of tile Mexican Indian. In spite of their contact with foreigners these beliefs and customs have remained unchanged throughout many generations. The old communal spirit and the idea of common ownership of the land still persist especially in the rural districts and villages; the old custom of a council for local self-government is reflected in the present-day labor committee. THE second operation in the art of casting, and one of the greatest importance, is that of melting and thoroughly liquefying the materials of which you wish to make your casting. On this operation depends the whole outcome of your intentions and the perfection of your work. Without it, even though you had a great abundance of moulds and vast quantities of bronze, your desires, labor, and expense would all be in vain. In this operation I find on consideration that, in addition to experience, there are three necessities-perhaps indeed four-that must be provided without fail. The first is the furnace or other agent which contains the fire and the metal brought together. The second is the wood or charcoal which is the necessary and proper nutriment of the fire, from whose virtues are derived the greater or lesser forces which, according to their kind, are ready to effect what is required. The third is to have the materials disposed to easy fusion by means of corruption, alloying, or by their own nature. The fourth, as the motivating cause of the whole, could perhaps be listed as the first-this is the ingenuity and good judgment of the worker, together with the bodily exertions not only of himself but also of his helpers in addition. For, besides a certain ordinary caution, it is necessary to pay particular attention, first, to see that the furnaces, machines, ladles, hearths, refineries, and other kinds of instruments or similar vessels be made so as to dispose the metals for melting, and, when melted, that they easily maintain them so. These should also be prepared in such a way that they cannot be injured by the fire, for if they should be damaged the operation would fail. In order to do this, it is first necessary that you arrange the instruments with forethought and action so that the power of the fire can operate. Fire operates on things only when brought together with them in long-continued operation, or when driven by a great force of wind. It burns many things and softens others, but it makes the metals as liquid as water.

Although this is going to appear in the December Issue of &E, it is being written long before the end of the year. December, of course, is the time for a summing up of the year's activities. Perhaps, the best way to begin is to report on what went on at the SME Board of Directors Meeting in St. Louis on October 20. This won't be a chronological report, and I shall take time to comment on some of the items we cover as we go along. You should be encouraged to know that your Directors take their duties seriously. Of the 21 current Directors, 19 were present, and three of the new 1971 Directors came to observe what goes on at an SME Board Meeting.

Quantitatiue studies of the deformation texture in drawn tungsten wives were made by the X-vay dif-fractottletetr. Experimental results show that the diffraction Intensities are equal to tilose pvedicted from the (1 10). fiber lexlure but the angxla), spreads of. diffraction peaks in the pole distribution curres are different for different diffraction planes and directions. For this reason a modified (110) fiber lextuve model, in which a kind of anisotropy is assumed, is proposed to explain the results. According to this model the poles lying on a line directing front the (110) to the (110) poles in the (1 10) standard stereograpllic projection should show spreads which are different from those lyitlg on a line directing from the (001) to the (001) poles, which is confirmed by the experiments. The anisolvopy and the spveads of the pole positions are large at the outer part of the wires and decrease gradually lowards the inside of the wire. The possibilily of occurrence of such anisolropy in irrelals with fcc stvuctures is discltssed. THE deformation texture of drawn tungsten wires has been assumed by different investigators to be the simple ( 110) fiber texture.' Recently, however, Leber2,3 has shown that a swaged tungsten rod has a cylindrical texture. It changes gradually to the (110) fiber texture by drawing through dies. However, even after drawing to 0.25 mm in diam, the cylindrical texture can still be found in wires together with the (110) fiber texture. This was deduced from the pole figures obtained from the longitudinal section of these wires. Use was made also of quantitative measurements of the pole distribution curves. Leber stated that the angular spread of the pole distribution curves (henceforward called dispersions) are quite different for (400) 45 deg and (400) 90 deg: the former is always larger than the latter. This inequality is accompanied by deviations of the diffraction intensities from the theoretical values for the ( 110) fiber texture. Bhandary and cullity4 have reported similar results on iron wire and explained them by assuming a cylindrical texture. Both Leber3 and Bhandary4 used only the results of the (400) reflection for the determination of the dispersion. The pole figures found by Leber3 and by Rieck5 are largely different. The model given by Leber to explain the effects is in the authors' opinion in some respects unsatisfactory, especially if one looks at other than the (400) reflections. Intensities and dispersions of diffraction peaks are conclusive factors for the determination of the fine structure in wire textures. For this reason we studied them extensively to come to a model which is more suitable to fit the facts. In the following, after giving the experimental set-up, we report about measurements of X-ray diffraction on drawn tungsten wires. Different models to describe the experimental results will be discussed. EXPERIMENTAL GO-SiO2-A12O3 doped tungsten wires drawn to 0.18 mm in diam were used for the measurements. The wires were chemically etched to various diameters down to 0.03 mm. Measurements were carried out for the different wires in order to determine the dependence of the texture on the radius. The wires were cut to pieces of 10 mm length and fixed with paste closely against each other on a flat, polished glass plate. Parallelism of the wires with the surface of the glass plate should be adequate. For the diffraction studies three different X-ray sources were applied, respectively, giving the CuK,, FeK,, and FeKp emission. The measurements were carried out with a diffrac-tometer with a GM counter. The latter was fixed to a certain diffraction angle 20hkl and the diffraction intensity was recorded as a function of the angle of rotation of the specimen around the axis, lying in the specimen surface and perpendicular to the wire axis, as shown in Fig. 1. Measurements were also done with the detector at angles slightly deviating from the diffraction maxima The measured intensities in this case were taken to be equal to the background level. The deviations were chosen as small as possible but large enough to eliminate the influence of the diffraction maxima. The useful range of the rotation angle x of the specimen is generally limited by the wavelength of the X-rays. We have: where and cp is the angle between the wire axis and the normal of the diffraction plane. Intensity measurements were made to find the necessary corrections for counting loss of the GM counter and for distortion resulting from such effects as absorption of X-rays and from inclination of the reflection plane under study with respect to the surface of the specimen. I have attended these meetings, every year, since 1926 and have served on both the Pittsburgh and the National Executive Committees, so that I am fully aware - of the ruling of this organization regarding, "No Papers by Vendors". Since I am now classified as a VENDOR, I wish to express my sincere appreciation for the invitation to formally discuss these very interesting papers --all of which herald the coming of an entirely new era in the manufacture of quality steels. I also appreciate the references by Mr. Mosser and Dr. Swinkels to my first paper on the oxygen probe which was presented at the meeting of this group, here in Chicago, in 1966 and was subsequently published in the NOH Proceedings of that year. FRANK T. SISCO is a native of Lawrence, Kansas. He received his earlier education in Clinton, Iowa and his university training at the University of Illinois. His experience in the steel industry has included service in the chemical, testing, and metallurgical departments of the Illinois Steel Co., of South Chicago; the Hess Steel Corp., of Baltimore; the IJ. The writer's first experience with flotation was during World War I, in the bene-ficiation of Alabama graphite schist ores. One plant used a cone with a peripheral overflow; dried ore was distributed by a rotating disk onto the surface of the water. No reagents were added' The flake-graphite film floated along with some fine silica. Dewatering screens separated the flake. Naturally unit capacities were low but results were satisfactory. Minerals separation mechanical flotation machines were used in another graphite mill. pine oil was added directly to the head cells, with very good results. All the graphite concentrates from both types of flotation were carefully refined after drying by passing through burr mills, followed by very close sizing on sifters. In March 1927, the writer ran a very successful flotation test on minus 28-mesh, deslimed, Tennessee brown phosphate "sand,"† using a mechanical laboratory machine built in the shops of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., through the courtesy of Ernest Klepetko. The machine was soon converted to a subaeration type, with improved results. This phosphate research program was greatly enlarged and led to the formation of the phosphate Recovery corporation. The development of nonmetallic flotation followed rapidly. The first flotation machine for bene- ficiation of phosphate was installed in January 1928, in a pilot mill, by International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, at Mulberry, Florida. These machines were Minerals Separation, 24-in., sub-,,,tion types, with weir control of pulp between cells. The sand bleeders were very small—about 1¼-in. diameter. As the feed flake. Is to 25 per cent plus 28-mesh material, the cells choked up frequently. This was corrected by cutting a 2 by 6-in. bleeder opening above the impellers, at grid level, which short-circuited the coarse fractions directly into the feed of the next cell. The matter of size classification and grinding was a considerable problem, which does not come within the scope of this article. Because of the troubles noted above, cascade-type roughers were installed in the second flotation plant, built about 1930. Experimental cells had been tried in 1928. General plant layout is shown in Fig. 1 and details of the cascade construction in Fig. 2. The cascade installation in plant NO. 2 gave good results and eliminated troubles due to choke-ups and coarse feed. The capacities and metallurgical results equaled those of the modified 24-in. During the last year I had occasion, on behalf of our New York copper works, to send to various chemists samples, intended to he accurate, of material which we were buying and selling, and I was astonished to find what differences were reported. After talking over the probable reasons for this with a number of chemists and metallurgists, it was suggested that it would be of real use and some scientific interest to send samples to the different chemists, and take such care in making up the samples that we could feel sure that each chemist had as nearly identical a sample as it was possible to make. Sampling and assaying procedures were developed to obtain unbiased and reasonably accurate Au grade estimates in drill samples fm a coarse gold deposit. Gold grade comparisons were made by assaying 3 (1 assay ton) splits from each drill interval, then processing the entire reject thru a pilot plant for a blocked out zone. The result comparing the assay splits to the pilot plant results gave a ratio of 1 to 1.07. Another technique was developed to detect drill samples which has a coarse gold content by monitoring the varience. Testwork could be done on a 1 kg sample to improve the accuracy of the grade estimation if the variance was high for a drill interval.

There are those in the Colstrip, Mont., area who can still remember the opening of the Rosebud mine in 1923. For 35 years it was a steady employer of 80 or 90 residents who produced coal for the railroad. In 1958, though, mining ceased as diesel locomotives supplanted steam engines. The mine was purchased in 1959 by Montana Power, the parent of Western Energy Co., and production resumed in 1968. Long Construction Co. was chosen as operator of the mine equipment. At that time, reserves appeared virtually unlimited. The thick Rosebud seam coursed through alternate sections of railroad holdings and federal land-then came the federal moratorium on coal leasing in 1971. About the time Western Energy completed the special leasing procedure to extend reserves from an existing mine, a new federal monkey wrench was thrown into the works with passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977.
