INTRODUCTION Longwall mining made its debut in Indian coal mining scene around 1900. Despite this headstart, the application of the method has been slow and halting. Currently, there are some 16 operating longwall faces only in different Indian coalfields contributing to perhaps less than 3 percent of the total underground coal production. Ambitious plans for expansion of longwall mining notwithstanding, apprehensions on the cavability of Indian coalmeasure roof rocks and some unsavoury experiences with face collapses in caved longwalla have impeded wider adoption of the technique. Between 1960 and 1983, some 41 caved longwall faces were worked in Jharia, Raniganj, Karanpura and Korba Coalfields in India, of which 6 faces reportedly had collapsed(1). The first powered support longwall face was started in August 1978 at Monidih colliery which marked a major step forward in the introduction of advanced technological system in Indian coal industry. This paper attempts to analyse critically the experiences with longwall ground control in caved longwall faces in India. Experiences from powered support faces at Monidih, Dhemomain and Pathakhera are synthesized to provide an appraisal of the present status of caved longwall faces under the Indian coalmeasure roofs, which thus far have been characterised as “massive”. The geotechnical site factors at the powered support faces are evaluated and conclusions drawn on the pre-assessment of caving characteristics and support resistance required at the faces.

Mathematical equations have been derived to show the effect of the slippage phenomomenon (Klinkenberg effect) on unsteady-state gas flow through porous media. The assumption is made that the slippage may be represented by an equation of the type It is pointed out that most of the existing data on unsteady gas flow may be corrected for slippage by a simple change in definition of the dimen-sionless groups. INTRODUCTION Several solutions to the various problems associated with the unsteady-state flow of gas through porous media have been recently presented in the literature.','" The cited publications have resented solutions for flow under ideal conditjons. The principal assumptions involved include: (a) the density of the gas obeys the perfect gas law; (b) the viscosity of the gas is constant; and (c) the gas permeability is constant. Few, if any, actual gases under reservoir conditions are believed to conform with the above, but the ideal solutions do provide the basis for making improved estimates on the performance of gas reservoirs. The purpose of this paper is to show the performance characteristics when assumption (c) is corrected for the slippage phenomenon or the Klinkenberg effect. This is believed to be a step nearer to reality. MATHEMATICAL DEVELOPMENT Case 1. Gas Flow — Ideal Conditions The equations describing the flow of gas under ideal conditions have been clearly presented in the cited literature; however, for completeness of this work they are repeated here. IT is with some trepidation that I approach my subject, for I know that I shall at once incur the suspicion of the mechanical engineer, with his concern for boiler tests and efficiencies; of the mining engineer, with his mechanization problems; and of the chemical engineer with his unit processes. Nevertheless, it must be recognized that the technology of fuels, the systematic body of knowledge relating to the production, processing and utilization of mineral fuels, has grown to such proportions and involves so many widely diverse applications of fundamental science and engineering that it behooves us to stop and consider just what its status is in relation to other technologies, as well as in relation to the present and future needs of the social order. The time has come when technologists, applied scientists and engineers must consider the possible effects that their achievements may have 0n Society. The development of a machine to replace several hundred men is a fine achievement when considered solely from the point of view of creative endeavor. But what of the men who are displaced by the machine! Does not the responsibility for the development of this machine embrace as well the consequences of obsolescence and technological unemployment resulting from such development? I believe that it does and that we must recognize this fact in our practice of engineering and technology as well as in the training of future engineers and technologists. MAGNITUDE OF THE FUELS INDUSTRY Fuel technology is the body of knowledge that relates to the mineral fuels. The fuels industry is by far the most important of all our mineral industries. The chart in Fig. I, reprinted from U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular No. 6643, indicates the comparative values of metals, fuels and other nonmetallic minerals for the year 1929. Of the grand total of 13 1/4 billions of dollars in value of minerals at the mines, the mineral fuels contributed 48 per cent. Coal, with 34.4 per cent, exceeded the value of any other single mineral. In fact, the value of the production of the Pennsylvania anthracite mines alone annually exceeds the value of the gold production of the entire world. Petroleum and natural gas in 1020 contributed 14.3 per cent and 3.3 per cent, respectively, of the total value of world mineral production. So much for the world picture; let us now look at the situation in the United States. Over the 60-year period 1880 to 1939, $46,409,727,000 of metallic products, S80,788,852,000 of fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas, natural gasoline) and $27,871,000,000 of nonmetallic minerals other than fuels were produced. The mineral fuels have contributed 52.7 per cent of the entire mineral wealth produced over this period that has seen such tremendous industrial development in our country. Many hydrated silicates have been synthesized and sold for commercial use. However, this paper discusses only hydrated calcium silicates and, to a lesser extent, hydrated magnesium silicates. Synthetic calcium silicates were first formed by man when he found that mixtures of silica or silicates and lime in water set up to form cements. The material which was responsible for the cementing properties was calcium silicate hydrate, although this fact was not recognized until early in this century. In the early 19001s, synthetic calcium silicates, reinforced with fibers and formed simply by reacting calcium hydroxide and silica in water with fiber at atmospheric or under low pressure autoclave conditions, found increased use in thermal insulations and in building products. These insulations were found to have a low thermal conductivity and would withstand temperatures up to 650°C. This, combined with their very low densities (from 8 to 50 Ib per cu ft) and fairly high strength, also made them suitable for use as building products. Following the disastrous Morro Castle fire of the 1930Js, calcium silicate board products were used as partitioning material in all shipboard construction in the U.S. As autoclaving techniques were improved and developed, it was: learned that under hydrothermal conditions new and useful calcium silicates which could be used under more extreme temperatures (up to 980' C) could be prepared. These had high surface areas and other unique properties which suited them for use as fillers, pesticide carriers, low temperature insulating materials, and adsorbents for the removal of fatty acids from various solutions. Hydrated magnesium silicates have not been studied as extensively as the calcium compounds. Their first important use was in the filtration of dry cleaning solutions for the removal of fatty acids. With the introduction of detergents, it was found that these products lost their advantage because of their high affinity for the detergent chemicals. However, in recent years these chemicals are finding increasing use as decolorizing agents for fats and anti-caking agents for resins. Some materials with very high surface are finding new use as adsorbents. CALCIUM SILICATE HYDRATE COMPOUNDS AND THElR CONDITIONS OF FORMATION Within the past ten years much has been done in the field of calcium silicate hydrate chemistry. As a result of this work it has been found that at least 25 different forms of calcium silicate hydrate can either be formed synthetically or found as naturally occurring materials. C.-The briquet or boulet, or coalette (whatever name is used) has come to stay as a part of the fuel supply, particularly for domestic purposes. During the past winter I have had some personal experience with the use of boulets made from anthracite coal. All of this winter I have used boulets in my furnacee and in my grate at my home in Washington. One reason for doing so is that we get the boulets at a price considerably cheaper than the prepared sizes of anthracite coal. The fuel has proved entirely satisfactory. One advantage possessed by the boulet is its absolutely uniform size, which makes the ventilation of the firebed practically perfect. The boulets burn until entirely consumed. There is not, even in an open grate fire, if the fire is kept constantly going, any unconsumed fuel passing through the grate bars. The boulets hold their form until entirely consumed and then break away into a clean white ash, with absolutely no clinker. That in itself is a particularly favorable recommendation to the housekeeper. Mr. Malcolmson has mentioned the fact that notwithstanding the smokeless character of anthracite, the boulets made from it emit smoke. The emission of smoke is due to the coal-tar pitch used as a binder. This is particularly noticeable if the fireman is somewhat careless, or wants to save labor, and feeds too much of the fuel on the fire at one time, cooling it down and thus causing an unnecessary amount of smoke. The smoke lasts but a short time, however, and if the fire is fed a little more frequently, with a small quantity of fuel at one time, the smoke is reduced to a minimum. I believe it will not be long before some of our engineers will have overcome the objectionable smoke; and will produce either from anthracite or from the so-called smokeless New River and Pocahontas semi-bituminous coals, a briquet which will be as smokeless as anthracite for all. practical purposes.

KEMP :-In connection with Mr. Parker's paper, I would like to inject a little matter of history into our program here, as regards the founding of the Institute. The credit for the founding of the Institute really applies to miners who were engaged in the anthracite coal region. The three men who signed the circular for the call for the meeting which brought the engineers to Wilkes-Barre in May, 1871, were Eckley B. Coxe, Richard P. Rothwell, and Martin Coryell.

F. McMillan Stanton was born in New York City on May 23, 1865, the son of an English father and of a mother whose family was linked with that of Peter Stuyvesant. Mr. Stanton took his degree from the School of Mines of Columbia University in 1887, worked for two years as an assayer and surveyor and then went into the mining field on his own account. After a few years, he was offered a position with the Atlantic Mining Co., and began the work which was to continue with marked success for twenty-three years. In 1910, Mr. Stanton retired and went to Europe for a rest. Upon his return in 1914, he was elected treasurer and director of the Mohawk Mining Co., the Wolverine Copper Mining Co. and the Michigan Copper Mining Co., to which group was later added the White Pine Extension, Copper Co., and continued to serve these companies until the time of his death, Sept. 12, 1916.

GERMANIUM, once the metals industries' unwanted step-child, has suddenly blossomed into importance. As late as 1951 textbooks failed to mention it and the metal was considered no more than a nuisance that interfered with the electrolysis of zinc. Eagle-Pitcher is the only producer of Germanium, used in power rectifiers and the new transistors. Its basic quality is that its ability to carry current can be changed, and a current flowing through it can be controlled. Germanium is sold by Eagle-Pitcher for about $340 a lb, not bad for a metal that only a few years ago was totally ignored. Eagle-Pitcher gets germanium, cadmium and gallium by roasting the zinc concentrate to convert the sulphides to oxides, then adding coal and salt to the crude zinc oxide and sintering at a high temperature. The oxides of germanium, cadmium and gallium are converted to chlorides. Cadmium and germanium chlorides volatilize, and are gathered for additional processing. The important step is the distillation of germanium tetrachloride.
