THE ball mill has superseded stamps for the reduction of gold ores in most of the recently designed plants, partly because stamps are not suited to die fine grinding required for flotation, and partly to save space and construction cost. Experience with these new mills seems to confirm the idea that it is more difficult to recover bold from a ball-mill product than it is when stamps are used for crushing. Microscopical examination of particles of gold that have passed through a ball mill show that the gold has been pounded into exceedingly thin flakes coated with a talcy surface, making it more difficult to save by amalgamation, flotation, or concentrating. Bearing in mind that gold is extremely malleable, it seems reasonable that this should be so. Contrast the action in a stamp battery, where the crushing is by impact in the presence of mercury, to the grinding and rolling under pressure in a ball mill. It is well known that a better recovery can be obtained by panning or amalgamation from a sample of ore that has been crushed by mortar and pestle than from one reduced on a bucking board.

A deep well injection system is used by The Anaconda Co. for the disposal of uranium mill tailing water near Grants, N. M. A 2511-ft hole was cored and tested through Triassic, Permian, and Pennsylvanian (?) sediments and bottomed in Precambrian granite gneiss. The disposal well was plugged back to 1830 ft and completed in 563 ft of sandstones in the Yeso formation. The reservoir sandstones contain water similar to the injected waste water, and are isolated from overlying fresh-water aquifers by an evaporite barrier zone. Mill tailing water is decanted, filtered, and introduced into the well by gravity at an average rate of 400 gpm. The reservoir has a life expectancy of 10 years. The Anaconda Co. began uranium milling operations near Grants, N. M. in 1953 with a small mill that processed limestone ores. A larger second mill was built in 1955 to treat sandstone ores. In 1956 it became apparent that a large tailing pond would be required to contain the increased discharge of mill waste water. Research was begun on supplementary methods of disposal by which a minimal pond size could be maintained to avert excessive seepage losses. An intensive sampling program was begun to monitor the fresh-water wells in the area. The original limestone mill ceased operation in 1959. The present mill treats sandstone ores by sulfuric acid leach and a resin-in-pulp ion exchange recovery circuit that uses chloride elution. Process waste water is discharged to a tailing pond where, after evaporation losses, an annual average of about 400 gpm are available for injection into the disposal well. The waste water is a mildly acid solution that contains large amounts of manganese, iron, and the sulfate and chloride salts of sodium, calcium, and magnesium. It is a low-level radioactive fluid that contains small amounts of Uranium-natural, Thorium-230, and Radium-226. The average chemical and radioactive analyses of the waste water injected into the disposal well are shown in Column B of Table I. Disposal of the excess mill waste water by deep well injection was investigated after extensive research had proved that alternate methods were not satisfactory. A study of the regional geology and hydrology indicated that a disposal well was feasible, and a test well to basement rock was planned. Occasionally it is good to consider the past, assess the present and project the future. Curriculum, enrollment, matriculation of graduates and changes in industry which influence mineral education are all relevant for determining what changes will be needed in educational institutions to support growth and development in the United States. It would appear likely that with environmental pressures, energy needs with present stress in fossil fuels and general societal needs for metals and minerals that mining and metallurgical engineering faces a period of growth and may be on the threshold of a new era with a vitality that has not been enjoyed for several decades. The following information is based on material obtained through questionnaires received from twelve schools accredited in mining or mineral engineering (out of 18 in the U.S.), 2 not accredited and 5 which no longer have mineral engineering disciplines. The schools presented do not include the smaller nor larges of the undergraduate programs in mining engineering.

ALTHOUGH a considerable amount of practical importance attaches to systems involving gases and molten metals, little is known regarding the effects of alloy elements upon the solubility of gases in liquid iron. The solubilities of hydrogen1 and nitrogen2,3 in pure liquid iron are known and it has been shown that small amounts of silicon and aluminum3 exert only a small effect upon the solubility of nitrogen but greatly increase its rate of solution. This paper presents the results of a study of the Solubility Of nitrogen, at pressures approximately one atmosphere, in molten iron containing up to 1.5.5 per cent silicon.

DuRing the past summer the writer was asked by the Illinois State Geological Survey to make a study of some of its economic geological problems with regard to the applicability of geophysical methods of prospecting to their solution. The following four problems were suggested for investigation: (1) the fluorspar area of Southern Illinois, (2) oil structures in the south central part of the state, (3) the lead and zinc-bearing area of northwestern Illinois, and (4) the water supply and gravel deposits of the glacial drift. The prime requirements were to find a means of obtaining a maximum of useful information with a fairly modest outlay of expenditure for technical staff and equipment. The method of procedure adopted was that of making a preliminary study of each of the problems named by means of available office data and published reports with supplementary field reconnaissance where necessary. Preliminary Studies Fluorspar.—The fluorspar deposits of southern Illinois as shown by Weller,1 Bastin2 and others are of two main types: (1) vein deposits along steeply dipping normal fault planes, and (2) "blanket" deposits occurring practically horizontally along a certain sedimentary horizon. The vein deposits are composed mostly of calcite and fluorspar in sheetlike veins of thicknesses, where mined, ranging from about 2 to 12 ft. The surrounding topography is in a mature state of development with a relief of about 100 ft. or more. Any geophysical prospecting for this ore would have to depend either upon the physical properties of the ore and associated minerals or upon the properties of the geologic structure containing them. It is with pride that the authors of this paper report. that during 1944 the production of petroleum in Kentucky passed its all-time peak, 9,496,985 bbl. being contributed. The delivery of natural gas, especially from eastern Kentucky, was maintained and possibly exceeded the highest deliveries of the past. To raise the production of oil and gas was not easy with inferior and worn-out equipment and the shortage of skilled labor. Reminiscent of the early days of the industry in the state, particularly in the hills of Elliott County, where mud roads often have gradients of 45º, was the replacement of worn-out trucks and tractors by oxen. Of the total 9,496,985 bbl., 17 per cent was contributed by the part of Kentucky that is east of the Cincinnati arch, as compared with the total of 7,010,776 bbl. contributed in 1943, of which 25 per cent was contributed by eastern Kentucky. This discrepancy is due to the discovery of more new fields in western Kentucky rather than to a decrease in production in the eastern fields, where the average has been maintained by reconditioning and secondary recovery of old fields and further development of new pools reported for the first time in 1943. In all, 1103 wells were known to have been drilled in the state during 1944, of which 659 were drilled in western Kentucky and 444 in eastern Kentucky. The exact number of wells drilled for any year is never known, as drilling permits are not required except 'when it is planned to drill through a workable coal seam. Of the total number of wells drilled, 459 were oil wells, 229 gas wells and 415 dry holes. Two wells produced gas, the total initial production being 1,594,000 cu, ft. One hundred and eighteon wildcat wells were drilled, of which 107 were dry holes and 11 were oil wells. Three of the latter proved to be the discovery wells of commercial pools. Twelve new pools were discovered during 1944, none of major importance, as indicated in Table 2. The Utley pool, due to a stratigraphic trap on the flank of a closed structure, found oil in the Mcclosky at 2565 ft. in the discovery well, with initial productioil of 1000 bbl. In these days of intense competition for the domestic fuel market much is heard of the low efficiencies with which solid fuels, and most particularly bituminous coal, are burned in domestic heating equipment. In contrast to the every-day operating efficiencies of 85 and 90 per cent in large, central, electric-generating stations, efficiencies of 50 per cent and lower are cited for the hand-fired home furnace. Just as the miles per gallon of gasoline is only one of the factors that determine the cost of operation of an automobile, so the thermal efficiency is only one factor in the cost of domestic or other heating. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the total costs of domestic heating by various fuels and types of equipment, to determine the relative importance of efficiency and other factors, and to discuss what this signifies relative to the future of the use of fuels in the home. Factors That Govern the Choice of Fuel and Burning Equipment A rational, intelligent selection of fuel and equipment for heating the home would consider two groups of factors: Cost Factors Convenience Factors 1. Cost of potential heat in fuel 1. Attention 2. Efficiency of combustion and heat transfer 2. Dirt 3. Fixed charges 3. Noise a. Interest b. Depreciation c. Repairs 4. Power costs 5. Cost of handling ash and refuse. As just stated, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the relative importance of the five cost factors and not to discuss particularly the relative total costs of different methods of heating. A NEW and interesting type of drier has been developed and operated at the Magna plant of the Utah Copper Co. for the past year for the drying of a filtered concentrate in the molybdenum recovery plant of this company. The several units installed have ranged from 12 to 30 in. in width, and from 14 to 30 ft. long. Their economy was immediately apparent after the first one was installed. The machine is not only low in capital cost, but has proved efficient for the drying of fine concentrate at low operating cost. The Utah vibrating drier consists of a steel conveyor trough supported on flexible reeds from a structural steel foundation anchored in concrete. The steel pan, which is also the drying surface, is vibrated by a heavy Utah electromagnetic vibrator fastened either to the head or discharge end of the pan. The vibration thus obtained agitates the material and causes it to be conveyed over the heated surface.

Seventeen deeps, which contain hot or cold brines and/or metalliferous sediments, have been discovered in the axial rift zone of the Red Sea. Metalliferous activity results from the unique geological setting of this incipient ocean basin: oceanic crust intruding in a central rift zone flanked by thick evaporite sequences. Brine pools tend to occur in structural depressions where- transform faults intersect the spreading axis. The most significant metalliferous occurrence is in the Atlantis II Deep, which contains approximately 227 Mt (dry weight) of metalliferous sediment which averages 1.04% Zn and 0.28% Cu. Higher potentially economic grades (3-6% Zn, 1% Cu, 50 glt Ag) occur in the Southwest Basin of the Atlantis II Deep, comprising total metal tonnages of 1.7 Mt Zn, 0.4 Mt Cu, and 5000 t Ag. The Pre-Pilot Mining Test conducted in 1979 raised 15 000 m3 of mud by a slurry process and demonstrated the feasibility of mining, concentration by froth flotation, and tailings disposal at sea. A Pilot Mining Test is scheduled for 1983-1984. The metalliferous discoveries in the Red Sea provide a model example of deep marine mineral exploration. Detailed mapping of bottom bathymetry and brine-interface reflectors using a high-resolution narrow-beam echo sounder has been the most effective exploration tool in the Red Sea. Followup coring has discovered additional metalliferous deposits in basins without present-day brines, and potential exists for additional discoveries. Geochemical exploration using heavy metals values in sediments (iron, manganese, zinc, copper, and mercury) and sulfur isotope values of sulfides are considered to be the most promising techniques for discovery of currently inactive deposits. Positive sulfur isotope values in the range I to 17 are an indication of hydrothermal sulfides in the Red Sea, and there is considerable contrast from back- ground bacteriogenic sulfides ( - 10 to - 45).

AGING is a term that connotes a slow change in properties under ordinary operating conditions. It can be accelerated by increasing the temperature and by mechanical straining. The magnetic properties of iron and some of its alloys have for many years been known to be subject to such a change. But the cause of the change was not recognized until a few years ago after mechanical age-hardening in nonferrous alloys of the "duralumin" type had been definitely shown, by means of solid solubility curves, changes in electrical resistance and microanalysis, to be caused by slow precipitation of one or more constituents from the solid solution. The similarity between the solid solubility curves of such alloys (Fig. 1) and those for iron-nitrogen (Fig. 2) and iron-carbon alloys (Fig. 3) below the Al transformation point suggested at once that magnetic aging of iron might be caused by a similar process; namely, by the slow precipitation of carbon and nitrogen in the form of Fe4N and Fe3C at ordinary temperatures because of a cooling rate that had been too rapid to permit complete precipitation according to equilibrium conditions. This suggestion has since been amply confirmed, particularly by the comprehensive work of Köster1 on the effect of nitrogen and carbon. Typical curves are shown in Fig. 4 for the relationship between aging temperature and coercive force. Previous to the establishment of the precipitation-hardening theory it was thought that the effect of nonmetallic elements like C, N, 0, etc., on the magnetic properties of iron was greatest when these elements were retained in solid solution, atomically dispersed throughout the interstitial spaces of the iron lattice2.

DURING 1919, in the face of high cost for labor and supplies and a rapidly dropping copper market, the management of the Ohio Copper Co. of Utah was left with an orebody that had been shown to be very low grade, and a mill that could not make a satisfactory recovery, even by flotation, because a considerable proportion of the copper minerals was oxidized. About seven million tons had been mined by the use of a caving system, the best of the broken ore extracted and milled, and the nature and copper content of the rest of the orebody fairly well determined. The rock of the whole mine was shown to run between 0.3 and 1.3 per cent. in. copper. As, the Ohio Copper orebody lies at the contact of the original sandstone (now altered to quartzite) with the quartz monzonite intru-sion that was the source of the mineralization at Bingham Canon, the rock was thoroughly shattered. It was shown further that the rock was mostly quart-zite, with a few quartz-monzonite "fingers" projecting into it. Although some of the old cleavage planes had been healed by resilicification so as to leave some of the copper minerals disseminated in the rock, a large proportion of these minerals was distributed along the cleavage planes.

The Cascade Range of Washington can be considered metallogenetically to be primarily a copper province. Structural and chemical data compiled from examination of numerous copper occurrences in the Cascades indicate a marked parallel of physical conditions for sulfide deposition. In probable order of significance, the environmental criteria are as follows: 1) adjacent or subjacent, postregional metamorphism high-level intrusive activity, most commonly in the time range from 15 million years to 30 million years; 2) transverse northeast trending structural belts which obliquely cut the northwest regional trend of the range; 3) potassium-silica wall rock alteration; most important of the alteration suite of silicates are orthoclase secondary biotite and quartz; 4) the intersection of northwest trending and northeast trending structures. The varying geologic environments in the Washington Cascades present a complex setting for the sulfide deposits. The North Cascades are comprised of predominantly pre-Tertiary metamorphic rocks invaded by Tertiary calcalkaline intrustive rocks. The Central Cascades, lying south of the North Cascades, exhibit a younger, higher level geologic environment comprised of predominantly early to middle Tertiary volcanic rocks and subordinate sedimentary rocks which are intruded by Tertiary calc-alkaline igneous rocks. Although the Tertiary Cascade intrusions are dominantly quartz dioritic, copper mineralization is commonly found in rocks of quartz monzonite to granite composition. These acid rocks appear to be the product of late stage magmatic K alteration of the original quartz diorites. Sulfide concentrations are considered to be in part dependent on the degree of K-silicate activity and the intensity of transverse structural deformation.

BEAN1 has discussed the magnetic behavior of mixtures of small ferromagnetic particles on the order of 20 to l000A in diam. As he points out, there are three size categories with characteristic properties: 1) Particles large enough to contain many ferromagnetic domains magnetize initially by the motion of domain walls. The initial susceptibility of such particles, if domain-wall motion is assumed to be perfectly easy, depends only on their shape. It is equal to the reciprocal of the demagnetizing factor (and is thus 3/4 tt for a sphere) and is independent of temperature. 2) Smaller particles find it energetically undesirable to contain domain boundaries. They are always spontaneously saturated, and reverse their magnetization only by rotation of their entire magnetic moment. As assemblage of such particles has a remanence which is a large fraction of the saturation of the assemblage; its coercive force is on the order of 2K/1,, where K indicates magnetic aniso-tropy from any source, and I, is the saturation magnetization of the substance of which the particles are made. 3) Particles which are still smaller continue to be single-domain, but the direction of their magnetization fluctuates thermally, as first pointed out by Neel.' They have no remanence and no coercive force and possess the temperature-dependent magnetization curve of a paramagnetic substance with a very large moment. Bean calls this superpara-magnetism. All of these kinds of behavior are observable in alloys consisting of a precipitate of ferromagnetic phase in a nonferromagnetic matrix.
