Arrangements have been completed in New York whereby the re- sources of The Engineering Foundation, under the auspices of the four principal national engineering societies, are placed at the disposal of the National Research Council, which was appointed by the National Academy of Sciences* at the request of President Wilson. The object of the Council is to coordinate the scientific research work of the country in order to secure efficiency in the solution of the problems of war and peace. The Council was without funds until The Engineering Foundation, established to further scientific and engineering research, offered to place its resources at the Council's disposal, including the services of its secretary, Dr. Cary T. Hutchinson, to act as-secretary of the Council. The offer was accepted and plans for immediate activities have been placed in the hands of an executive committee. In indicating how thoroughly, every branch bf science and engineering is represented, Dr. George E. Hale, Director of the Mt. Wilson Solar Observatory, and Chairman of the Council, when he was in New York attending to the details of the arrangement, called attention to the personnel of the body, saying that it is the purpose to enlist the cooperation, in the solution of our industrial and military problems of a scientific character, of every possible established agency. Medicine, for example, is represented on the Council by Dr. William H. Welch, President of the National Academy of Sciences, Brigadier General William C. Gorgas, , Surgeon Crenera.1 of the United States Army, Dr. Simon Flexner, Director of the Rockefeller Medical Institute, and Dr. Victor C. Vaughan, Past President of the American Medical Society; biological science by Dr. Edwin G. Conklin, Professor of Zoology, Princeton University; chemistry by Dr. A. A. Noyes of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Dr. L. H. Baekeland; physics by Dr. A. A. Michelson of the University of Chicago; and electricity by Professor M. I. Pupin, of Columbia University.

During no similar period in the development of petroleum refining technology has so much progress been made in methods and equipment for the economical utilization of heat. Drastically severe commercial and economical conditions controlling the refining industry during 1927 gave a great impetus to improved efficiency and more economical operation in all departments. I think it is fair to say, however, that more progress has been made in the department of heat utilization than in other branches. I use the word utilization advisedly in the dual sense of better primary generation and application of heat and of saving by recovery methods. It was because of this trend that the subject, "Economical Application of Heat," was made the keynote of the refinery engineering sessions just completed. No new, outstanding elemental discoveries can be claimed for the year along this line. Some of the progress made has been in the development of better furnaces and distilling equipment embodying the more modern principles of boiler practice in obtaining complete combustion of the fuel, low excess air requirements and high transfer rates through the heating surface. Transfer rates of 3000 to 6000 B. t. u. per sq. ft. per hr. were considered good some time ago in the older type of equipment. Today a transfer rate of 25,000 to 35,000 B. t. u. is an actual accomplishment in commercial installations and engineers are talking of the feasibility of 50,000, 75,000, even 100,000 R. t. u. per sq. ft. per hr. Contributing most to bringing this about have been the rational use of the velocity factor on both the oil and firing side of the heating surface, and the study and application of the principles of radiant heat in furnace design. Vapor Heat Economy The principle of heat exchange, especially against oil vapors, has been applied to a greater extent than ever before. The recovery of heat from oil vapors is not new. This work was first undertaken for the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in 1919-20, by C. E. Julihn, superintendent of the station at Minneapolis. Learning of the interest, in this subject, of B. F. Tillson, of the New Jersey Zinc Co., Mr. Julihn and Mr. Foley went to Franklin, N. J., and discussed the matter with him. A conference in Chicago, in November, 1920, was attended by Dr. F. G. Cottrell, who was then Director of the Bureau of Mines, and representatives of the Bureau of Mines and of the hlissouri School of Mines and Metallurgy; at this time a cooperative plan of work was agreed upon by the Bureau of Mines and the Missouri School of Mines. In February, 1921, Mr. 'Tillson arranged a conference on this subject at the time of the annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, at which several technical papers were presented. In a paper, the Breakage and Heat Treatment of Hock Drill Stcels, he suggested a program that might be carried out in connection with the investigation of the problem. At this conference Mr. Manning, former Director of the Bureau of Mines, suggested the formation of an advisory committee to the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards for prosecution of this investigation. On Feb. 20, 1922, a secoud conference in New York, at the time of the annual meeting of the American Institute of mlining and Metallurgical Engineers, was attended by representatives of various technical societies. At this meeting, the report of Nov. 20, 1921, of the Chiefs of Divisions of Metallurgy of the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards, was discussed and it was agreed: 1. That the survey recommended by the two bureaus should be undertaken, which survey would have for its object the ascertaining of the present status of the practice of the heat treatment of drill steels, the extent to which the breakage occurs, etc.; and 2. That a report should be presented, of the findings of those who made the survey, to the Advisory Board to the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards. The Bureau of Standards assigned $4000 to the prosecution 01 a three-months' survey, which was carried out in April, May, and June, 1922, of about sixty mines

THE FRAMEWORK Consider where you, the reader, would place the emphasis m your answer to the following questions on mineral supply. Do you think of the mineral resources of developing countries in terms of the contribution which they can make to world mineral supply or in terms of the contribution they can make to development of the country? Do you look upon developing countries as a source of minerals for world industry or as a potential enormous market for minerals? If you are from a developed country it would be surprising I£ you did not emphasize the first alternative in each case, but it is also possible that simply raising the questions will call for some mental adjustments, because usually we do not think in these terms. If you are among the two-thirds of the world's population which comes from developing countries, you might well emphasize the second alternative. And to a growing extent during the reaming decades of the 20th century this is where emphasis must be placed. Increasing amounts of the world's mineral production come from countries which are in the early stages of development. Mineral consumers of the world look to these regions for continuing supplies of material to help meet their ever-growing needs; the producing countries look to mineral exports as one means of stimulating and financing their economic development-this seems a happy and fortuitous relationship. But due to the complexities of world mineral supply, it is a relationship which is fraught with potential confusion and misunderstanding. That this is so is not surprising when one considers that many of the producing countries are new countries which are urgently trying to find the path along which they can move towards development; that the direction of the path is by no means clear because various theories of economic development, as a planned and deliberate process, are relatively recent in origin and none are well understood; and that the very concept of the less developed countries (LDC's) is a relatively new one. To further complicate the situation there has never been a clear under- standing of the full role which minerals play in economic development, either in the case of those countries which are already classed as developed, or in the case of countries which are in the process of development. Before embarking on an investigation of some aspects of the relationship between minerals and developing countries, it seems wise to establish broad terms of reference, which may not be totally valid but which will at least give an initial direction for a journey with no clearly definable goal. Introduction The Pueblo Viejo gold-silver mine, located in the Dominican Republic, started production in early 1974 processing ores averaging 4 g/t gold and 20 g/t silver at a rate of 7.25 kt/d. The ore milled is a silicified siltstone with average work index of about 8 that occurs as an extensive oxide capping of a primary sulfide ore body. The sulfide ores are refractory to conventional treatment process and extensive research work is now in progress to develop a treatment process for them. The ore deposit has a long history, having been mined by the indigenous Arawak Indians for some time in the early sixteenth century prior to the arrival of the Spanish, and then by the Spaniards. In the early 1950s, Italian engineers attempted to process the sulfide ores. Mining by the Indians and Spanish was abandoned because of low grade and little coarse gold in the oxide ores and by the Italians because of the refractory nature of the sulfide ore. In 1969, Rosario Resources geologists discovered that there existed sufficient reserves of oxide ore for a viable mining operation and the plant was designed, built, and brought into production.

Secretary E. H. Benjamin, of the California Miners' Association, has proposed and begun, in co-operation with the testing laboratory of the University of California, at Berkeley, a series of tests which should prove of great interest and practical use to all persons making extensive application of steel wire cables, and especially to miners who run them in deep mines. Mr. Benjamin is endeavoring to obtain pieces of cable both new, and old and worn, from every deep mine of importance on the Pacific Coast, together with all the data obtainable concerning their manufacture and particular use. Pieces from each sample will be broken ill the laboratory before mentioned: and as far as possible the effects of winding around drums or pulleys ; of sudden starting and stopping when loaded; of heavy shocks, and of the general wear and tear of the cables, will be ascertained by these tests. The Olsen testing-machine of 200,000 pounds capacity will be used to break the cables, and the rupturing force, in different instances, will be applied slowly and also rapidly, in order to make the tests comparable as far as possible with the practical use of the cables themselves. All information and data available should be obtained for each specimen sent to the laboratory, the name of the manufacturer, the date of making, strength of cable when new and unrusted, as well as the circumstances and conditions of the practical use of the cable. Having this information before us, we shall be able to tell, approximately at least, the effects of age, rust, wear and tear, shocks, etc.; and perhaps be enabled to draw the line of limitation beyond which it would be no longer safe to use a cable of known manufacture. Moreover, by means of such tests we may, perhaps, he able to recommend worn cables for other uses, less severe in character, thereby prolonging the life of their effective usefulness. ALEXANDER BRINTON COXE was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Jan. 19, 1838, the second of five sons of lion. Charles Sidney Core and Ann Maria Brinton. A more extended history of his family and its important relations to the development of the United States will be found in my Biographical Notice of his younger brother, Eckley B. Coxe, published in 1895. It is therefore sufficient to say here that Dr. Daniel Coxe, a distinguished physician and surgeon of London, and a medical attendant of Charles II and Queen Anne, purchased, in 1684 and 1686, lands in East and West Jersey from grantees of the Duke of York, and became Governor of West Jersey, in which capacity he did much to develop the provincial fisheries, the manufacture of marine salt and pottery, the exportation of tim¬ber and the West India trade. In 1698, having acquired the royal patent of the Province of " Carolana," covering (with some reservations) the territory extending from the Atlantic to the Pacific, between the 31st and 36th parallels of N. latitude, Gov. Cole sent an expedition from Charleston, S. C., to the Mississippi. In 1769, seventy years later, his grandchildren surrendered to the Crown their title under this vast and vague patent, receiving in return a grant of 100,000 acres in the Colony of New York. The line of his descendants, so far as they concern this sketch, is as follows 1. Col. Daniel Core, his son, b. 1673, who came to New Jersey in 1700; resided there until his death (1730); held many high offices; and issued in London (1722) A Description of the Provinces of Carolana, containing probably the earliest published plan of political union for the British Colonies in North America.

For the past several years the policy of a large section of our mining industry in relation to our present bureaucratic form of government has become increasingly amusing, if not a little disgusting. In the past, mining men have always featured themselves the self-announced champions of free enterprise, and, generally, this conviction, was substantiated by their deeds. In recent years, however, a large group of the industry, while still expounding, from the front porch, the principles of free enterprise and a sound economy based upon the law of supply and demand, have gone around to the back door with palm extended, to join labor, farmers, bureaucrats, and other pressure groups to get their share of the take. The procurement of subsidies, bonuses, increased metal prices, and government assistance in a multitude of forms seems to have obscured from their thinking the welfare of the country as a whole and the sounder economic principles of a balanced budget and lower taxes. At the recent Colorado Mining Association convention in Denver, I. was alarmed to see just how far this specialinterest type of thinking has progressed within the mining industry. Government assistance to mining. was generally considered inadequate, and a flat bonus for any new mineral discovery was proposed. It was disquieting, too, to learn how far the federal alphabet agencies have entered into the mining industry and of the thousands of highly paid technical. men on the federal payroll required to man these numerous overlapping agencies and bureaus. Now all this is very fine, and some aspects of the federal give-away program can be very appealing to the unsuspecting in the mining industry as they have been to those in other groups. Some of these expensive programs may bring about a few dividends or even several new mines. But to this whole line of pump-priming reasoning there is one big disastrous fallacy.

THE oft repeated statements of the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines that the coal reserves in the United States are sufficient for 3000 yr have given us all a sense of security hard to disturb. If we discount that statement 66 pct, which to the uninformed seems drastic, we would still have 1000 yr supply, and why should mortal man worry about the difference between 1000 and 3000 yr supply of coal. That is exactly the attitude which many who should be better in- formed have taken toward the problem. A recent brochure "How Strong is America," by the New York Herald Tribune, states there is "no end to coal * * The truth is staggering * * U. S. has enough coal to last 4000 years." What the statement actually means is that the calculator got as high as 4000 yr and decided it was pointless to go on. The President's ERP Committee on Natural Resources and others in high places continue to assure the country of our superabundance of coal. In the past few days the “Wall Street Journal" carried an item from Director Boyd of the Bureau of Mines saying that within a hundred years we would need to triple our annual coal production of 6oo,ooo,ooo tons, making it 1,800,000,000 tons annually, and at that rate we had coal reserves sufficient for 1000 yr. In my humble opinion, we cannot now or ever produce 1,800,000,000 tons annually, be- cause we do not have the reserves in the producing districts to do it. Past reckoning in geology may be, as in the Psalms, a thousand years are as yesterday, but the future must be considered more realistically, and "a thousand years" is really a "heck" of a long time. In most developed areas, mining engineers can count the coal reserves in terms of a hundred years or less, and in some important areas now producing large annual tonnages in much under fifty years. They think when they hear of thousands of years coal reserves, reference is made to distant fields and "the fields are always green far away." The estimates of our coal reserves upon which we are relying were made in 1907 under the direction of Marius R. Campbell, Director of the United States Geological Survey. It is apparent this work was not well done. It was necessarily based on rather meager data because of the little development and prospecting as of that date. There were mistakes in the correlation of seams, and they assumed the continuity of thick seams throughout large coal bearing areas where coal often did not exist. The overstatement of coal bearing areas in the Campbell figures are common. The 1907 survey includes all coals over 14 in. in thickness to a depth of 3000 ft. The total coal reserves according to Campbell were 3157.2 billion tons. The production and mining losses that year would amount to -570 million tons and

This paper deals with recent geologic studies in the slate belt of Northampton, Lehigh and Berks counties, Pennsylvania. The work was conducted under the auspices of the Pennsylvania Topographic and Geologic Survey. Three years have now been spent in detailed consideration of the economic geology of this region. In the field, particular attention was paid to the bearing of geology on quarry development and property valuation and the object of this paper is to summarize the results from that viewpoint. Excellent studies of a somewhat similar nature have already been carried out by Bowles,' but with the emphasis upon the details of quarrying and fabricating methods, rather than upon the geologic relations. The Northampton-Lehigh-BeRks District Location The region here discussed lies in east-central Pennsylvania and extends southwestward from Delaware River, on the New Jersey line, to the Schuylkill in north-central Berks County. It is an elongated belt occupying the northern sections of the three counties mentioned and lying along the southern edge of Blue Mountain. Its length is about 50 miles and its average width five or six, though in places it attains a maximum of 10 miles. There are no large cities in the region, but about 10 miles south are Reading, Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton. Railroads serving the slate belt are the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, and the Pennsylvania along the Delaware River, the Lehigh Valley and Central of New Jersey along the Lehigh, and the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia and Reading on the Schuylkill. In addition, two railroads—the Philadelphia and Reading and the Lehigh and New England—cut obliquely through the slate region to reach the more isolated communities. Transportation facilities are thus excellent. The slate deposits of these three counties are conspicuously unified, both economically and geologically. In general type of marketable

Theories correlating the formation of u and related intermetallic compounds to the electron-per-atom density of binary and ternary alloys have appeared regularly in recent technical literature. These same principles can be modified and applied to complex precipitation-strengthened alloys such as the iron-, cobalt-, and nickel-base superalloys and the stainless steels. Since these complex alloys contain carbides and other phases that normally precipitate before the U-type phases, the nature and amount of the precipitated phases must be calculated first. The following general formula is then applied to the residual matrix composition of the alloy: element. The magnitude of the resulting number is indicative of whether the alloy will form a a -type phase. When these calculations (which are computerized) are systematically applied to alloys of knoun phase analysis, a breakoff in average electron-vacancy number is noted between U-free and U-prone alloys. Alloys with an average electron-vacancy number higher than the breakoff form a-type phases, while those with lower ones do not form these phases. This method could then be used to eliminate from consideration all experimental compositions that would precipitate undesirable phases. It also is useful in evaluating analyzed heats of alloys where minor heat-to-heat variations determine whether the alloy is o-free or o-prone. THE highly significant development of strong, ductile superalloys to provide reliable construction materials in the 1000" to 2500° F temperature range has been due principally to unremitting application of Edisonian techniques and logic by the dedicated physical metallurgists who have shouldered this responsibility. Tools such as the electron microscope, phase analysis, and computers to accomplish regression analyses have been used heavily, but the effort has been essentially practice of an art, rather than a science. The objective of this paper is to describe and illustrate application of some relatively fundamental principles to certain of these alloy systems in an attempt to remove some of the empiricism from the technology. Specifically, the work presented here deals with the use of periodic-group relationships to predict the formation of intermetallic phases which can occur in primarily austenitic (fcc) structures. Calculations that have been developed might be applied in the design of new alloys and the evaluation of known alloys, and thus have the potential of eliminating vast areas of unnecessary alloy preparation and evaluation. ALLOYING CONCEPTS AND STRUCTURAL FEATURES OF SUPERALLOYS Strength is produced in austenitic superalloys by three principle mechanisms: 1) precipitation of y'; 2) formation of carbides; 3) solid-solution hardening by soluble refractory metals. The first mechanism requires the addition of aluminum and titanium, the second requires carbon and carbide-forming elements, while the third calls for the addition of molybdenum and/or tungsten. A considerable concentration of chromium is usually maintained to resist oxidation/corrosion, but it is also an important carbide-forming element. INTRODUCTION This discusses some of the economic risks and uncertainties which face any company investing in new mineral ventures. These differ mainly in degree rather than kind from other large capital intensive projects, except that economic risks are compounded with technical risks. Mines face a wide variety of physical risks, and in addition the ore reserves may not prove as ample, nor as amenable to treatment as the feasibility studies indicate. On the economic front, mineral projects are subject to risks of fluctuating prices and sales volumes, no matter where they are located, or how they are financed. Typically, they are heavy users of capital compared with their owners' internally generated funds. Long term debt of various types is still the favoured form of finance. A project's currencies and cost often differ from each other and from those of the parent company. Facing up to the various risks associated with fluctuating and uncertain revenues, interest rates and exchange rates are amongst the hardest tasks for natural resource companies. ATTITUDES TO THE MINING INDUSTRY Some have questioned whether the game itself is now worth playing. They have argued that the mining industry's mediocre rewards in the past decade have been insufficient, compared with the risks involved. They can see no prospect of dramatic improvement in the next decade. Demand is highly cyclical and tends to grow less rapidly than economic activity, as a whole. Barriers to entry are low in most mineral markets, but impediments to exit can be substantial. Exit is especially problematic in those minerals where there are large state shareholdings and/or where less developed countries are major producers. The consequence is claimed to be an endemic tendency to excess capacity, and prices barely adequate to cover marginal cash costs. Many of the petroleum companies that moved into mining with such high expectations in the late 1970s have retreated, often bearing the scars of heavy losses. Individual shareholders, taken collectively, place low valuations on their investments in mining companies. The price/earnings ratios of the major mineral producing companies are low compared with their historical averages and with those of other industries. Slate is a fine-grained rock that has a more or less perfect natural cleavage, permitting it to be split readily into thin, smooth sheets. According to a definition established by the American Society for Testing Materials, slate is "a microgranular crystalline rock derived from argillaceous sediments by regional metamorphism and characterized by a perfect cleavage entirely independent of original bedding, which cleavage has been induced by pressure within the earth." Origin and Character Slates have originated from sedimentary deposits consisting largely of clay. Such materials were carried by streams and deposited in seas or lakes in successive horizontal beds. Other materials such as calcium carbonate, sand, or gravel may have been deposited over the clays, and the pressure of these superimposed materials gradually consolidated the materials below into bedded deposits of shale. Shale is a stratified rock formed by recrystallization of the clay plus adsorbed potash into the mica, sericite. Shale has neither the strength nor the splitting properties of slate since the mica is fine and the flakes unoriented, and the quartz grains do not interlock. Many shales, however, have been subjected to intense metamorphism. Mountain-building forces ever at work in the earth's crust may crumple, squeeze, and fold the shales. At the same time, accompanying high pressures and temperatures changed the original minerals into mica, interlocking quartz, or chlorite. Both mica and chlorite consist of minute tabular sheets or flakes with perfect cleavage. The intense pressure and movement tend to orient these flakes in parallel positions normal to the direction of pressure. The parallelism of the flakes results in the tendency to split with ease in one direction, which has been termed "slaty cleavage," and which is the outstanding characteristic of slate. Actually, the cleavage is through the cleavages of the individual micaceous plates. The original bedding of the slate is often folded and contorted, and the slaty cleavage commonly cuts across it at sharp angles. Composition MINERALOGICAL COMPOSITION The most abundant mineral in most slates is white mica (sericite), a hydrous silicate of potash and aluminum. It is present in very small flakes recognizable only with a microscope. Small grains of quartz (silicon dioxide) are also abundant and are regularly distributed among the mica flakes. The mica-like mineral, chlorite, is usually present in considerable quantities. Chlorites are of several kinds, the more common being hydrous silicates of aluminum and iron or magnesium. Other common minerals present in small quantities are rutile, clay, hematite, pyrite, carbonaceous matter, feldspar, zircon, tourmaline, calcite, dolomite, and siderite. The general range of the chief constituents is about as follows: Sericite, 38 to 40; quartz, 31 to 45; chlorite, 6 to 18; hematite, 3 to 6; and rutile, 1 to 1 ½ pct. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION Results of many analyses indicate that clays, shales, and slates differ little in chemical composition. The changes that take place during metamorphism are confined largely to rearrangement of the elements into new minerals with accompanying changes in physical properties such as hardness and cleavage. Dithiophosphates are reaction products of phosphorous pentasulfide with various organic compounds such as phenols, alcohols, mercaptans, dioalcohols, amines, and nitrides. The products with alcohols are commercially known as "aerofloats" and these are investigated in this presentation. It appears that the formation of insoluble metal dithio phosphates is responsible for their collecting properties with minerals." In this aspect they are very similar to xanthates.3 The solubility of metal dithiophosphates depends on the number of carbon atoms in the organic chain of the corresponding alcohol. An empirical mathematical model is presented here. It allows one to predict the number of carbon atoms necessary to ensure that a certain metal dithiophosphate will form at a selected pH value of the water solution. The Nature of Dithiophosphates Dithiophosphoric acid is the product of the reaction of phosphorus pentasulfide with an alcohol, as shown in the following equation: [P2S3 + 4 ROH - 2 (RO)2 PS2H + H2S (1)] where R stands for a hydrocarbon chain. The acid so produced can be neutralized by a base to produce the corresponding salt as shown in the following: [(RO), PS2H + NH- (RO)2 PS, NH,. (2)] In this aspect dithiophosphates are similar to xanthates, the only difference being the substitution of the tetravalent carbon atom in the xanthate polar group by a pentavalent phosphorus atom in the dithiophosphate group. This difference implies at least two characteristics: (1) that there are two hydrocarbon chains associated with the polar group so that an increase in the number of carbons of the single chain is expected to have a pronounced effect on the flotation properties, and (2) that the bond between the sulfur and the central atom is stronger than in the xanthate group. This probably leads to a decrease in both the polarizability of the electronic cloud of the sulfur and the interaction with cations.3 However, what is lost in the dithiophosphates by having a weak polar group can be gained by an increase in the number of carbons as will be seen later. Taking into account the size of the atoms involved in a dithiophosphate molecule, as listed in Table 1, It is possible to draw an approximate diagram of its structure as shown in [Fig. 1]. It is assumed here that the length of the single hydrocarbon chain is equal to that of the corresponding alcohol. Preparation and Purification Acid dithiophosphates can be prepared, as previously mentioned, in accordance with Eq. 1. The rate of this reaction is too slow at room temperature and can be improved by increasing the temperature to about 60° or 80°C7 or by evacuating the system. In our investigation evacuation was performed by a water aspiration pump. The dithiophosphoric acid so produced is liquid and dissolves in the alcohol. At the end of the reaction the product is filtered from the remaining P2S3; and dissolved in petroleum ether. All major regions in a progressively solidified germanium ingot were related through successive orders of octahedral twinning. The occurrence of lineage structure and the generation and survival of orientations are discussed. WHEN metals solidify in a temperature gradient a preferred orientation, or casting texture, usually develops. For example, in face-centered and body-centered cubic metals, most of the solidifying crystals have a cube axis, <loo>, aligned approximately in the freezing direction.&apos; In the solidification of diamond cubic metals this is not the case, since there is a natural tendency to form twin orientations.&apos; . In this paper, twinning relationships in cast germanium are described; some conclusions with respect to nucleation and survival of new orientations are discussed. In the first experiment, an ingot of high purity germanium, % in. in diameter and 1 % in. in length, was formed by progressive solidification4 from the bottom. The ingot was cut into 21 slices, each circular and about 0.030 in. thick. The top surface of each slice was polished and etched to reveal the regions of different orientations. Orientations were determined by the Laue X-ray back-reflection method. The uncertainty in the determined orientation relationships was l" or 2" when separate slices and films were involved. Frequently, however, advantage was taken of illuminating across a boundary when the patterns of the two orientations were recorded on the same film. The uncertainty then was less than 1". Often the twin relation was evident from common zones or individual reflections. Twin relationships were recognized through comparison of the values of the nine angles between cube poles of the two orientations with those calculated for successive orders of octahedral twinning. The birth and survival of each region can be reconstructed by visual examination of the etched slices shown in Fig. 1. In slice 21, where solidification began, many regions are present; these regions were found to be twin-related. Solidification appears to have started from one nucleus formed probably at the wall of the crucible.* Subsequent ori- entations were developed by nucleation on existing solid surfaces, and only in the twin relationship. This is an example of a general process of nucleation on a surface of existing solid and may be descriptively termed oriented nuc1eation.t In germanium, and other diamond cubic substances, the orienting habit is that of twinning on an octahedral plane.&apos; " The prevalence of straight traces in the polished surfaces of succeeding slices (Fig. 1) suggests that the twinning observed in the first slice persisted throughout solidification. This was confirmed by X-ray determinations. The schematic diagram of Fig. 2 shows the twinning relationships of the major regions throughout the ingot. Since all observed relationships are describable as twinning, it is reasonable to conclude that no random nucleation occurred in the freezing of the ingot. An alternative possibility would be that nucleation of a random nature occurred, but only those nuclei in twin orientations survived in subsequent growth. This is unlikely for there would be as good a reason for the growth of randomly oriented nuclei as for the growth of the many different orientations present after several orders of twinning. The many twin components contain a wide distribution of orientations, and did grow. In fact, they are the only ones found in the solid. The conditions of solidification of this ingot were such as to discourage nucleation of crystals wholly in the liquid. The rate of solidification was 0.125 in. per min. This slow rate of heat removal afforded but small opportunity for supercooling within the liquid —a condition needed to provide enough decrease in free energy for such nucleation. When nucleation occurs on an existing solid surface, the interfacial energy between the existing and forming regions is important in determining the new stable orientation. A preliminary description is made of the field of automation and optimization of the oxygen blast furnace process. The concept of static and dynamic process control is illustrated. After a short general description of all factors concerning the optimization of this process, a learning system is derived which gives better results than models previously used. This learning or self-adaptive control system uses statistical methods with exponential aging of process data and requires derivation of multi-variable functions of the process for which measurements can be made available. The practical application of this new procedure and of additional measuring instruments are discussed, and results obtained in plants using the adaptive control system are described. A survey of European steel plant automation using the Siemens technique is presented.

ONE of the special uses to which the electric furnace has been put recently is the melting of an alloy of nickel and cast iron for the production of electrical-resistance grids. The metal sections of these grids, Fig. 1, are quite uniform for each pattern, but there is, among the various patterns, a variety of thicknesses. The cross sections vary from 1/2 by 3/16 in. to as small as 1/8 by 1/8 in. The electrical resistance f a perfect casting lies within 10 per cent. above or below the fixed listed resistance for each pattern. Good molding is essential to success in the making of these grids, for with absolutely correct metal, a variation of 0.01 in. in width and thickness of section on some of the patterns may mean as much as 12 or 14 per cent. variation in resistance. The service for which these castings are intended demands that the metal, even in the smallest castings, be very soft, showing an open, gray, highly graphitic structure in order that they may be resistant to shock, and stand up well under rough usage. The metal used for this purpose is a gray iron alloyed with 4 to 5 per cent. of nickel, which element, when the composition of the alloy is correct, imparts toughness and pliability to the metal and helps to overcome the tendency of metal to run white and become brittle because of the rapid cooling action of the sand mold. When cold, these castings can be twisted into various shapes, taking a permanent set without breaking. The alloy has approximately double the electrical resistance of ordinary cast iron. The leading antimony mineral is stibnite. In smelting stibnite ore two processes are available, precipitation and roasting-reduction. The former is suited only for high-grade ores. As low-grade ores are more common than high-grade, roasting-reduction is of greater importance than precipitation. In the roasting process the aim may be to leave the oxidized antimony in the ore, or it may be to volatilize as much of the antimony as possible, collect the volatilized oxide as a rich intermediary product and smelt it for antimony, leaving the gangue poor enough to be considered a waste product. Whichever way the roast is conducted certain difficulties inherent in stibnite are encountered. These are: 1. The low melting point of stibnite which, according to Pélabon,&apos; is 550°C., according to Wagemann2 540°C., and according to Borgstroma 546°C. 2. The ignition temperature: According to Friedrich,4 stibnite, if heated in air, begins to oxidize at 290°C. if the size of a grain is 0.1 mm. in diameter; at 343", if 0.1 to 0.2 mm.; and 430" if 0.2 mm. 3. The fusibility of a mixture of Sb2S33 and Sb203 which in the form of kermesite (Sb2S3)z.Sbz03 melts at 517°C.6 4. The volatility of Sb2Ss and SbzOs, for which no numerical data appear to exist, although practical experience has shown that they are volatile at low temperatures. Gold has been mined in the state of Georgia for over 100 years, and although the total production is nearly $18,000,000, the output has declined to an insignificant figure in recent times. The increase in price of gold has brought about a revival of interest in this district, with the result that an electrical survey was undertaken in the McDuffie County gold belt to see whether new quartz veins could be discovered. The problem of locating quartz veins electrically has only rarely been attempted by geophysicists, because of technical difficulties. New improvements in apparatus and field procedures, the most recent of which is the designing of the Ground Comparator, now make possible the differentiation of quartz veins and enclosing rock. This instrument is designed to eliminate the effect of ground contact resistances, and measures the ratio of potential drops between successive stations. These are transformed into resistivity ratios, the highly resistant quartz veins manifesting themselves by sharp breaks in the resistivity-ratio curves. Surface variations of resistance are eliminated by a special technique. Electrical surveys were made on two properties about 40 miles west of Augusta, Georgia. A reconnaissance of the Woodall and detail work on the Hamilton required about. 13,000 ft. of electrical profile. Typical profiles from each are given, with the results of trenching certain of the electrical indications. Comparisons are made between the reactions due to veins several feet wide and those from small quartz stringers. Instances are cited where the electrical profiles were used to trace extensions of known veins, or to establish their nonextension. The discovery of several veins is described, most of which were barren, but of which at least two showed gold in encouraging amounts. The field of application of the Comparator to the prospecting for metallic and nonmetallic minerals, and to the study of various geological problems, is discussed at the close of the paper.
