INRODUCTION Roan Consolidated Mines Limited (RCM) operates five underground mines - Mufulira, Luanshya, Baluba, Chambeshi and Chibuluma (figure 1) . Associated metallurgical plants provide for the operations of milling, smelting two refineries for copper and a cobalt plant. Primarily a producer of high quality copper (242,000 tonnes during 1980) the Company is also the world's second largest producer of cobalt metal. RCM's remaining ore reserves at 31st March 1980 were 275 million tonnes at 2.84% copper. Monthly ore production is in excess of 1.2 million tonnes. Sublevel open stoping was the choice of mining method for the first underground operations on the Copperbelt for ore with dips steeper than 30 degrees. This was for use at the Roan Antelope mine, subsequently to be called Luanshya mine. The sublevel open stoping system was planned based on the methods used in many of the iron mines of Michigan and New York and in the copper mines of Tennessee. Peterson (Ref. 1) gave the following reasons for employing sublevel stoping, reasons which are still valid today: (1) the working place could always be barred and made safe, and the sublevel exit was always at hand; (2) the working conditions were similar day by day and drilling operations were repetitive; (3) pillar spacing can be varied as conditions demand; and (4) stoping operations could be shut down completely or opened up to full capacity at short notice, without affecting grade or causing wastage of reserves. Such was the success of the method that it was adopted as the basic mining method at all the RCM mines in their initial stages. Although cut and fill, block caving, and sub- level caving methods have been used, sublevel open stoping in its many variants still accounts for nearly 90% of total ore production in the Company. The following descriptions outline some of the applications of sublevel open stoping within RCM. LUANSHYA Geology There are two main ore deposits at Luanshya: the Roan (Luanshya Mining Area), in which mining began in 1930, and Baluba, in which mining production started in 1973 (figure 2). Both orebodies occur in synclinal and variably folded basins. These basins are underlain and completely surrounded by much older schists and granites. The ore formation, an argillite, lies near the base of the sediments and is underlain by conglomerates, quartzites and arkoses. Copper mineralisation is mainly found in two well defined zones, separated by a varying thickness of pyrite mineralisation. In the eastern part of the Roan deposit only the upper orebody is present, but west of 18 shaft and at Baluba the lower orebody predominates. Locally the subjacent quartzites of the footwall formation are also mineralised with copper. The copper mineralisation is found princi- pally as disseminated sulphides, mainly chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite. Near the surface the sulphides have been changed to oxides. At Baluba the cobalt mineral carrollite is found with the sulphides. Mining methods Sublevel open stoping is the basic mining method. In its standard form this method is best suited to steeply inclined orebodies, with simple structures and with a strong foot- wall and hangingwall. In recent years, as more complex folding and flatter dipping orebodies have been encountered, considerable variations have been introduced. Stope drilling is effected with drifters and extension steel.

Production of oil in Australia is negligible at present. A very small quantity of crude is being recovered from lean pumpers in Victoria, and a little activity is evidenced in Queensland, where two new wells were sunk during 1934. One of these, at Warooby Creek near Roma, obtained a noteworthy gas flow, but no oil production has been recorded. Geological investigation is going on in Western Australia, but no drilling activity is apparent. The "boom" in oil prospecting came to an end when the wave of depression swept over the country, and the investing public turned its attention actively towards gold. There is great activity in gold prospecting at present. I still maintain as strongly as ever that the prospects of obtaining flow oil in Queensland, Western Australia and Victoria are good, and that really scientific methods must ultimately succeed. Active and excellent geological work is being carried out in the Mandated Territory of New Guinea, and it is reported that drilling is likely to be undertaken next year. Matters in Papua are at a standstill. The question of extraction of oil from the oil shales of New South Wales and Tasmania is perennially active, and attempts to exploit this source commercially are renewed from time to time. Hydrogenation of coal is also receiving a good deal of attention.

The extensive employment of nonmetallic minerals antedates the use of metals, but only within the last two decades has the production of nonmetals begun actually to keep pace with the complicated activities which characterize the so-called Machine Age. The economic changes ushered in by the Industrial Revolution were reflected first in an increased demand for metals and for fuels. In the modern sense, therefore, the nonmetallic mineral industries are new and afford new opportunities for engineer and economist alike. A certain amount of caution is indicated, therefore, before attempting to apply ready-made formulas to the problems of these industries. Economics is not an exact science. In the field of production technology where the number of variables is fairly well known, the principles of economics are readily applicable, but as the student proceeds through the province of marketing into the unexplored regions of psychology and sociology he must distinguish carefully between scientific reasoning and purely metaphysical speculation, even when the latter masquerades as economics. The present paper attempts to prove no preconceived theorems and is designed primarily to stimulate careful thinking on sundry neglected phases of these industries. An attempt is made to differentiate the general problems into single aspects which afford promise of being comprehended separately; also, some fundamental statistical data are presented, but merely to indicate a method of scientific approach applicable to more intensive studies. Definition Before discussing the economics of the nonmetallic mineral industries, it is appropriate to consider what we mean when we say "nonmetallic minerals." This term, inasmuch as it is merely a negative description, is somewhat loose and ambiguous and gives rise to questions in regard to minerals that, like chromite or bauxite, are alternatively classed either as nonmetallic or as metallic minerals (or ores). THE rate of output of a rock crusher is based upon a certain space relation, the calculation requiring that the size and position of the jaws, the principle of motion, and the speed of the machine be known. The result is a calculated maximum output. The purpose of this paper is to develop a method of calculating this maximum output, to judge the general applicability A utility of such a calculation, and, so far as possible, to record calculated values as a basis for the comparison of actual results, or for estimating the capacity of a new crusher or of a standard crusher working under new conditions. A method for calculating the capacity of crushing rolls, which has been in common use for a long time, is well presented by R. H. Richards.1 The output is conceived as a ribbon of rock, of which the breadth, thickness and length are governed respectively by the width of the rolls, the space, between them, and their peripheral velocity. The weight of the rock thus crushed in a given time can be calculated from its specific gravity, after applying a factor representing the percentage of voids in the hypothetical ribbon. The calculation of crusher capacity is made in a somewhat similar manner. While the action of rolls is simple, with few irregularities in operating conditions, in rock crushers the material advances intermittently, usually under the force of gravity alone, and is subjected to a variety of variable conditions. The effect of these variable influences upon' the calculation of capacity is now to be shown. In this paper, capacity will be discussed quite apart from any consideration of mechanical efficiency; that is, results will be stated not in terms of output per horsepower, but of output for a given machine when operated at a known speed, constructed and adjusted to receive material of a known size, and to yield a product having a definite maximum coarseness.

As described by means of quantitative pole figures, the inside texture of highly rolled aluminum and copper strips may be approximately described by four equivalent ideal orientations near (123) [121]. If rolled in reversed passes, the surface texture of copper is also near (123) [121], that of aluminum is (100) [011]. The inside texture of highly rolled brass is (110) [112]. The surface texture is the same, if rolled in reversed passes. The surface texture of all three metals is related to the inside texture, but asymmetrical, if rolled without reversal between passes. MANY previous investigations dealing with the subject of the present work were reviewed by Wassermann.1 Barrett,2 Brick,3 and Richards.' The recent introduction of quantitative methods for pole figure determination by Decker, Asp, and Harker,5 Schulz5 and others made it possible to reinvestigate some of the finer points which the earlier more qualitative photographic methods left undecided. The rolling textures of silver and of 70-30 cartridge brass have been quite consistently characterized by the ideal orientation of (110) parallel to the plane of rolling and [112] parallel to the rolling direction. On the other hand, it has been recognized by several investigators that certain other face-centered cubic metals, such as copper and aluminum, developed rolling textures rather different from that of brass. These textures have been variously described by the following ideal orientations, singly or in combinations with each other: (110 [112]: (112) [111]; (135) [335]; (135) [211], etc. The discrepancies usually have been attributed to the lack of sharpness in the textures and to the attendant difficulty of associating "ideal orientations" with pole figures showing great scatter of orientations. It seemed desirable to investigate by the new quantitative methods to what extent the apparent lack of sharpness may have been brought about by the qualitative methods used previously, rather than by the textures themselves, and to decide, if possible. between the various ideal orientations which have been proposed. Another problem, not satisfactorily settled by earlier investigations. concerns surface textures in rolled metals. For instance, in rolled aluminum the surface texture in some cases appeared to be similar to the texture inside the sheet, whereas in other cases it was reported to be entirely different.' The conditions under which such differences may have arisen, and the possibility of the occurrence of different surface textures in other face-centered cubic metals do not appear to have been examined in detail. The present work was undertaken to investigate the above questions. Some of the results obtained have been described- riefly. Experimental Procedure Specimen Preparation: In the present investigation 2s aluminum, electrolytic tough-pitch copper, and commercial 70-30 brass were used. These materials were available in the form of cold-drawn rods. 1 in. diam for tough-pitch copper and commercial 70-30 brass and 11/2 in. diam for 2s aluminum. The cold-drawn bars were alternately annealed and rolled 30 pct lengthwise in several cycles until a penultimate thickness of 0.500 in. was reached. The intermediate and the penultimate anneals were carried out for 30 min at 380°C with 2s aluminum, and for 30 min at 550°C with 70-30 brass. Today's rapidly shrinking world requires a common language of measurements, a consistent system which could be used by everyone. The S.I. system of units is generally accepted as such and is already in use by a great majority of nations in the world. The change to S.I. units is also slowly taking place in U.S. engineering practice. The transition period is difficult and long because it takes time to get familiar with the new system, to start "feeling" values in new units. Instruments, formulas, computer programs, survey grids, etc. have to be converted or exchanged. The transition period should be used not only for substitution of units, but also for rationalization of presently used calculation methods. This paper examines the major parameters of mine ventilation from the above point of view and discusses a system which is much simpler and more consistent than the American Unit System still in use in the United States. In October 1979, the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME decided to introduce the S.I. unit system in all its publications including the periodical "Mining Engineering", and since February 1980 the system has been used consistently, not only in SME publications but in all conferences and meetings organized by this Society. The authors have no intention of explaining the details of the S.I. system in general. Any reader can find this information in many available publications and conversion tables, and in particular in the ASTM Standard for Metric Practice, E380-79. A comparison is made between various units used in mine ventilation from the past and those presently in use. This will allow an easy translation from one system to another, important when reading publications from abroad. S.I. and customary U.S. formulae are shown side by side for easier visualization of similarities and differences. Recommendations for the necessary steps in order to switch from American to S.I. units conclude the paper.

The search for new deposits raises two important questions: Where did the metallic ions that formed the orebodies come from? What processes and geologic factors were involved in ore replacement? A review of the wide geological variety of recent uranium discoveries tells how these questions are being answered. SOONER or later intelligent exploration for uranium leads to these questions: Where did the metallic ions that formed the orebodies come from? What processes and geologic factors were involved in ore replacement? These matters, of course, make a big difference in how best to look for orebodies. Before these questions are discussed it might be well to point out other factors bearing on the subject. The whole business of uranium exploration is only a little over ten years old, participation by the public is only about six years old, and real interest and activity by more than a few large mining companies has arisen only in the past two or three years. Throughout this short period, uranium exploration has been affected by the unique influences of necessary security measures and by division of the overall job into individual projects by a large number of specialists in diverse fields. This has meant that a normal interchange of information on the nature of uranium deposits has really only just begun. Compared to the vast amount of published studies on iron, copper, lead, zinc, and gold deposits over the past 50 to 75 years, current knowledge of uranium deposits is in its infancy and much of the pertinent information is still scattered about in a number of unpublished sources. The volume of reports on all phases of uranium exploration is now beginning to mount at a remarkable rate, and geologists with widely varying specialized backgrounds in uranium geology are engaging in spirited debates over the origin of uranium and the relative importance of geologic controls of various deposits. One of the most interesting features of known uranium deposits of the world is the wide variation, see Table I, in character and geologic environment. It should be noted that many types became prominent during 1953. The davidite-bearing veins of Radium Hill, South Australia, are almost unique, although the same mineral occurs in a different kind of deposit in Mozambique. Recent studies indicate that brannerite disseminated in the granite near Cracker's Well, South Australia, may soon constitute uranium ore. Basalt has been added to the list of favorable host rocks in the Northern Territory of Australia. Basalt is also the host of the pitchblende veins of the Martin Lake deposit, Beaverlodge district, Saskatchewan. The truly remarkable rich and extensive Steen deposit near Moab, Utah, is of the uraninite-vanadium oxide type. Secondary hydrous uranium arsenates and phosphates constitute the uranium minerals in the disseminated deposits of the Wind River Basin, Wyo., a new district discovered in the summer of 1953. Uranium minerals in shales adjacent to fractures were newly reported in New Mexico and several other parts of the world during the year. The well-known important uraninite dissemination in the Rand conglomerates of South Africa has a counterpart, as discovered in the summer of 1953, in the Mississagi quartzite and conglomerate of the Blind River district, Ontario. Gunnar deposit of the Lake Athabaska district, Saskatchewan, consists of uraninite in both granite and sedimentary gneiss beneath a granite cap, and large new orebody of the Eldorado Co. in the same general area follows a preferred stratigraphic horizon in schists. Uranium is, generally speaking, a very soluble and ubiquitous element. It occurs in at least two valency states and for this reason is not easily tied down in natural solutions. As Gruner' has pointed out, it is probable that uranium starts in the hexava-lent state in nearly all solutions instrumental in its transfer. It is believed that under oxidizing conditions the uranium moves in solution as the uranyl ion, UO. In solutions ranging in pH from 1 to 5, the uranyl ion is most commonly in association with

W. R. Ingalls, since 1905 editor of the Engineering and Mining Journal, retires from that position with the issue of Mar. 22, to open offices in New York City as a consulting engineer. The severing of this connection .will not be complete, however, as Mr. Ingalls will continue as consulting editor, and will handle the metal-market quotations in the Journal which are now the accepted authority for the government settlements of ore importations and the basis of practically all the ore settlements between miners and smelters throughout' the country. No greater compliment can be paid to Mr. Ingalls than this, unless it is the recognized fact that these quotations have been made what they are by his ability and his integrity, which secured for him channels of information vital to the accurate estimating of the market, but denied to anyone else. The Journal, under the. strong hand of Mr. Ingalls, has always been the acme of ethics in technical journalism, and the best wish that can he given to his successor, not yet announced, is that the Journal may long continue to live up to the standards not originated, but so consistently maintained and strengthened by Mr. Ingalls. His spelter statistics are accepted as authoritative wherever the English language is read and zinc ore is mined. He has found time during his very arduous years on the Journal to he the author of several works on the resources and metallurgy of zinc, lead, cadmium, etc.; for 5 years was the editor of Mineral Industry; and was consulting engineer for the Bureau of Mines and joint author of their voluminous and authoritative work on mine safety rules. His retirement from the Journal is a distinct loss to every one of the Journal's readers individually and to the profession as a whole. Universal good wishes go with Mr. Ingalls to his new field, which has for a long time been offering him professional attractions that his confining editorial work has not permitted him to accept.

Altered concepts regarding the raw material used in conventional blast furnace plants as well as new technologies for the reduction of iron ores make it necessary to reconsider the design of pelletizing plants. The incorporation of a pelletizing plant within a conventional integrated steel mill involves considerations of the problems of using in-plant fines. A modern pelletizing plant in Mexico serves as an example of the technical solution. In recent times, pelletizing plants are also being integrated within steel mills based upon direct reduction processes. The design of such pelletizing plants must take into account special product quality requirements.

Distinct areas of mineralized and non-mineralized brecciated rock are found in the Ontario Unit of the United Park City Mines. These breccias contain an appreciable fraction of the present ore reserves and probably will become even more important as deeper levels are developed. Three ages of breccia have been recognized in the Ontario Mine to date: ( 1) Pre-mineral breccia that may or may not be mineralized, (2) early post-mineral breccia with mineralized fragments, and ( 3) late post-mineral breccia that is younger than and cuts through ( 1) and (2) above. These age ,relations are known from detailed underground mapping. Locally, both pre-mineral and post-mineral breccias have sufficient lead-zinc-silver content, either as matrix or fragmental material, to constitute ore. Ore-grade breccias occur throughout a vertical range of over 1000 feet and are found in both the Humbug and Deseret formations from above the Ontario 1300 level to below the Ontario 2200 level. The mineralized breccias, which are difficult to distinguish on mine maps, are not well delineated by underground workings, and their horizontal outline and vertical extent are not known beyond the immediate mining areas. The greatest amount of truly mineralized breccia is exposed on the 2200 level.

Activity in geological exploration and drilling continued in Canada in 1945 at about the same rate as in the previous year, but with disappointing results as far as new production is .concerned. Both in the foothills and on the Plains of Alberta, however, there are wildcat wells that have either given encouraging shows or some production, which are very important in relation to future developments. The normal decline of Turner Valley, the largest producing field in Canada, has continued, and this decrease has not been offset by new discoveries. In addition, the closing of the Canol pipe line on March 31, 1945, isolated the Norman Wells field in the Mackenzie River valley, and the outlet at present. is confined to supplying the relatively small local requirements. To /neet the need for a subsurface flowmeter capable of measuring low rates of flow, a new type flowmeter has been built and tested in the field. This instrument is self-contairzed, can be run on a wire measuritzg line, and may be run through 2-in tubing. It consists of a rotameter flow-measuring assembly used in conjuncfion with a conventional subsurface instrument clock and chart. Integral with the tool is an inflatable packer which, by effecting a seal between casing and tool, diverts all fluid through the metering assembly. Packers of different size adapt the tool to different sizes of casing or liner. The flowmeter is capable of measuring rates of flow as low as 4 BID. The flowmeter has been run experimentally in seven wells. It has yielded satisfactory resrrlts in five of the wells, and in the other two it failed to operate because of loose sand in the hole. INTRODUCTION One of the oldest problems facing the producing branch of the petroleum industry is the location of depths of entry of fluid into a wellbore and the determination of the amount of fluid entering at each depth. This problem is often encountered in oil and gas wells completed in single producing horizons as well as in multiple pays; it is a common problem in oil wells which produce excessive volumes of gas. Several subsurface instruments designed to detect and meter flow in the producing interval of wells have been described in the literature.1,2,3,4 Most of these, however, were apparently intended for use in wells producing at relatively high rates of flow, and consequently lack sensitivity to low flow rates. Because of this and of other possible disadvantages inherent in these instruments, development of the subsurface flowmeter described in this report was undertaken. DESIGN OF FLOWME'I'ER Design Requirements In considering the requirements for a flowmeter that would not be subject to the limitations of devices existing at the time work was started, attention was first given to the size of the tool. Such an instrument should be of sufficiently small diameter that it could be lowered readily in 2-in tubing in a producing well. The flowmeter should contain a recording unit so that it might be run on a wire measuring line with conventional reeling equipment. It should not be too long to be accommodated by a portable lubricator of the type used for running conventional subsurface instruments. The metering mechanism of the flowmeter should not be affected appreciably by the viscosity or density of the flowing fluid. Such an instrument should record flow rates in the range from less than 10 B/D to over 100 B/D. To achieve this, a packer should he provided to divert through the instrument all fluid flow in the wellbore. This packer should be of such nature that in the event of excessive flow the fluid would bypass the instrument instead of forcing it up the wellhore. INTRODUCTION Additional work has been done on the CIP circuit at Creede, and a brief description of this work is presented in this paper. DREDGE The original dredge for the Bulldog was built by Al Hack, Inc. of Denver. The dredge cutter head is mounted on a boom made of 6-inch diameter pipe which is raised and lowered by a cable-pulley system. Maximum cutting depth is 8 feet. Slurry from the dredge flows through a floating 6-inch diameter pipe supported on 55-gallon drums which runs from the dredge to the shore and then to a trash screen and pumping system. See Figures 1 and 2. The cutter head, suction pump, winches for dredge movement, and all other operations are controlled from a small operations house located toward the rear of the dredge. All of the basic dredge equipment is mounted on a chassis about 8 ft x 16 ft in size. Additional buoyancy was originally provided by sealed 55-gallon drums supported along the sides of the chassis by a small wooden framework. Additional framework and barrels on the front of the chassis on either side of the cutter boom provided additional stability, particularly when digging in hard material. The dredge was quite stable, but two problems were apparent. For one, it could have been sunk by someone from the shore firing a rifle into all of the barrels. The rates of grain boundary and general corrosion were surveyed by an approximate method. Quantitative differences between their variations with the strength or cupric ion content of the acid yielded large variations in their ratio, highly selective intergranular attack being observed only under specific chemical conditions. The boundary corrosion rate increased with the copper content of the aluminum; this was attributed to an autocatalytic effect similar to the one shown for general corrosion. High- purity aluminum in hydrochloric acid exhibits striking intergranular corrosion and other structure-dependent corrosion phenomena of fundamental interest. The behavior is highly sensitive to the metallurgical and chemical conditions, the significance of many of which has not been established. The features of the intergranular-corrosion phenomenon, first described by Rohrman,l are summarized in the remainder of this paragraph. Strong attack normally occurs only at high-angle grain boundaries.' Usually 15 to 25 pctHCl is used to obtain a high rate, but this has also been obtained with weaker (7 to 15 pct) acid either by adding cupric or ferric ion to the acid3-5 or by passing an anodic current (-0.1 ma per sq cm).2,3,5,6 The two latter corrosion conditions produce strong attack of low-angle boundaries after certain heat treatments 2-4,5,7 The susceptibility of high-angle boundaries is influenced by the grain-boundary segregation of iron atoms; this increases the slow (µ per month) attack in 10 pct HCl8 but diminishes the rapid (mm per month) attack in 20 pct Hc14 (the present and most previous investigations deal with rapid attack). That segregation of elements other than iron affects intergranular corrosion has not been demonstrated, although analysis of data for iron alloys indicated that at least one other element must be considered.9 Intergranular attack occurs over a wide range of purity although it begins to become obscured above several hundred parts per million (ppm) total im- purities by the severe general corrosion which accompanies the higher iron contents and which is associated with the presence of a second phase or an inhomogeneous distribution of the dissolved iron.4,6,10 The variation of intergranular-corrosion rate with heat treatment1'3-6'"10 can be explained in some cases in terms of the distribution of the iron impurity but is not in general adequately understood. The present work dealt with two questions not previously considered in detail. The first proceeded from the view that the extent to which a special behavior is associated with the boundaries is indicated not by the intergranular corrosion rate alone but by the ratio of the intergranular to the general corrosion rate. A comparison of the two rates was therefore made for one lot of aluminum in acids of varying strength and metallic ion content. The second question was the effect of the copper content of the aluminum. For general corrosion, it has long been known that copper ions introduced into the acid by corrosion of the solid solution are reduced on the aluminum as patches of elemental copper which enhance the corrosion rate by providing cathodes of lower hydrogen overvoltage than were originally present.''-'3 Since the copper patches remain themselves unchanged, their action is "catalytic", and since they are products of corrosion, the effect is "autocatalytic." This phenomenon is significant at copper levels much lower than previously suspected, even at those typical of high-purity aluminum, as the authors have shown in a previous paper.l4 The present work shows that copper content affects intergranular corrosion. With polycrystalline specimens, truly quantitative rate measurernents are not readily made for intergranular corrosion or for general corrosion in the presence of rapid intergranular attack, and previous work in this field has tended to be qualitative. The present study made use of a simple procedure which provided fair approximations to the quantitative corrosion rates and fitted the purpose of surveying the behavior over % wide range of conditions and displaying certain large effects. The approximations involved in this work were usually outweighed by the experimental scatter, which tends to be substantial in a system as sensitive as this one. I) EXPERIMENTAL A. Material. The prevention of quartz flotation by chelation of activating ions with the tetrasodium salt of EDTA in oleic acid flotation was investigated using a small vacuum flotation cell. It was found that flotation of quartz could be entirely suppressed in the presence of activating ions during complete flotation of hematite. It was further shown that the concentration of activating ions liberated from Wisconsin Gogebic taconite is sufficient to float quartz in an oleic acid system. Large tonnages of low grade siliceous iron ores occur on the iron ranges of the Lake Superior district. Although the lower grade nonmagnetic types are currently not of economic importance, they constitute a large future potential source of iron and steel, and hence have been the subject for extensive research on their beneficiation. TACONITES Of particular interest to the Dept. of Minerals and Metals Engineering at the University of Wisconsin have been the low grade nonmagnetic taconites of the Wisconsin Gogebic Range. These occur as five members of the iron formation and have been described in detail elsewhere.' Essentially they consist of an intimate mixture of hematite, goethite and quartz, with minor amounts of siderite, magnetite, iron containing silicates, and manganese minerals. A typical mean analysis based on the Bureau of Mines analyses' is: SiO2-52.50%, Fe2O3-43.40%, (Fe-30.38%), A12O3-1.15%, P2O5-0.07%, Mn2O3-0.29%, CaO-0.07%, (S-0.03%), Loss on ignition-2.00%. The quartz in these ores is of a microcrystalline variety,2 and so intimately associated with the iron oxide minerals that extremely fine grinding, in the order of minus 325 mesh, is required for liberation. During grinding and subsequent flotation, the concentration of quartz activating ions in the pulp becomes sufficiently high to activate quartz which floats along with the iron minerals in the presence of oleic acid. cook3 and co-workers concluded that oxidized iron ores released appreciable quantities of quartz-activating ions in water pulps. This is shown to be true in the present investigation. As a matter of fact, application of this phenomenon, as well as the intentional addition of activating calcium ions, is made use of in the an ionic flotation of silica from the iron oxide minerals.4,5 In view of the above, it becomes almost impossible to effect a sharp separation of quartz in the oleic acid flotation of the iron oxide minerals from these taconites, even with satisfactory liberation. This fact led to the current investigation to find a means of linking the activating ions with a chelating agent. The aim was to establish basic data for the quartz-water-oleic acid system which might not only be applicable to iron ores, but also to the flotation of other siliceous ores as well. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Vacuum Flotation Cell: The vacuum flotation used in this investigation is similar to that used by previous investigators.6,7,8 The cell consisted of a 100 ml graduated cylinder with the lip removed. Vacuum from a water aspirator was applied to the cell through a trap; suitable tubing, and a rubber stopper inserted in the top of the cell. Constant absolute pressure was maintained by means of a manometer connected to the trap with a tee. Flotation: The required amount of activating ion solution was pipetted into a beaker. This was then diluted to 99.0 ml with water having a pH below that desired for the test, or so adjusted with HC1. After addition of 1.0 ml of oleic acid solution (2.0 mg oleic acid per ml), the pH was readjusted to the desired value with NaOH, and the entire solution transferred to the cell containing 1.5 gm of quartz. After vigorously agitating the cell and its contents for 2 min, the vacuum was applied to the cell and the estimated degree of flotation observed for a 3-min period. Activating ions studied included Ca++, Mg++, Al+++, and Fe+ + + added as chloride solutions. In addition,

The area discussed in this paper, commonly known as the West Texas district, is easily divisible into three geologic provinces, the Midland Basin to the east, the Delaware Basin to the west and the West Texas structural platform separating these two. Production in Garza, Scurry, Mitchell, Howard, Glasscock, Irion, Reagan and central Crockett counties is associated with the east flank of the Midland Basin. That in Loving and Reeves counties is associated with the Delaware Basin. All other production and developments discussed in this paper belong to the province of the West Texas structural platform. Because of certain developments that have occurred during the past year, it has been found necessary to slightly revise one of the fields as grouped by Mr. Reith in last year's paper1. The Scarborough-Leck field has been broken down as follows (Table 1): The Leck field is shown separately because it is producing from dolomite; while the Scarborough area, producing from sand, is regrouped and designated as " Scarborough-Kermit-Halley," which includes the producing sand belt across Winkler County from Ward County to New Mexico. It is believed that this is a more logical division of Winkler County and that considerable future work will be avoided by making this change before further production figures have accumulated under the present set-up. A number of new fields are listed in Table 1, some of which may represent extensions of other produeing arras. The authors, however, are inclined to believe that they represent new fields. In either event, less work is involved ill adding two areas together, if they later prove to be one, than in attempting to separate a maze of production data into two fields after they have been erroneously carried as one for a number of years. The Howard-Glasscock field is designated in this review as the Chalk-Roberts field and the Denman production on the Howard-Mitchell County line is included in the Iatan field. Barron, treasurer; Bradley Stoughton, secretary; and the following committees: Executive Committee, Finance Committee, Library Committee, Committee on Papers and Publications, Committe on Membership. The personnel of these committees will be published in the Year Book. A vote of thanks was passed to each officer and member of the several committees that arranged the New York Meeting of the Institute. The meeting dates for the Board were arranged for the year.
