The specifications for cast-iron pipe that have been submitted at this meeting are practically the outgrowth of those which were originally adopted, about 1860, by Mr. Kirkwood of Brooklyn, N. Y. They have been changed but little since that time, the mode of testing pipe in the hydraulic press, as well as the method of coating, not having departed from the original practice. The chief addition to the specifications has been in the adoption of a test-bar 2 in. by 1 in. in crosa-section, broken between 24-in. supports by a transverse strain applied on the flat side. Test-bars were first introduced into pipe-specifications about 1870. At that time a satisfactory test-piece had to stand a tensile strain of 16,000 lb. per square inch. The present test-bar was adopted in order to give some idea of the deflection of the iron that was being used. These deflection-tests have been so satisfactory to both engineers and manufacturers, and have met the requirements of the pipe-trade so accurately, that it is considered best to hold to the . 2-in. by 1-in. bar instead of adopting the short " Arbitration Bar," which yields but little information from the stand-point of deflection. The new feature in these specifications is the effort to reach standards to which pipe shall be cast in the future, thus permitting the manufacturer to make up stock and the purchaser to find material on hand when he asks for deliveries. Heretofore there has never been ally standard weight for pipes? although in some sizes certain weights are more frequently asked for than others. The fixing of standards for pipes permits the adoption of definite standards for fittings. The most important process in a gypsum mill is calcining the crude mineral. There seems, however, to be little progress or change in calcining methods. This would not be surprising if the industry was not, in other ways, developing. The demand for gypsum in its various forms, however, is growing rapidly. The output has more than doubled in six years, while the value of gypsum products, through the introduction of higher priced. specialties like wall board, has nearly trebled in the same period. In other industries, under somewhat similar conditions, calcining in rotating cylinders, either by direct or indirect heat, has replaced the method that still prevails in gypsum mills. Efforts were made to use rotary calciners in manufacturing plaster of Paris in the early days of the industry in America; 25 years ago rotary calciners were in use in Germany. At that time there was great diversity of opinion in regard to their merit. In 1923, the output of calcined gypsum in the United States was 3,101,378 tons. About nine-tenths of this material was calcined in kettles, the remainder in rotary calciners. The ratio was about the same 10 years ago. During these 10 years, rotary calcining made relatively no gains, and there were no important changes in the construction of kettles. In their manipulation, the only change of consequence was in connection with the length of time that the gypsum is left in the kettle. For wall-plaster purposes, all producers who had not previously done so changed from second-settled to first-settled calcined gypsum, thereby reducing production costs and improving the plasticity and sand-carrying capacity of their plaster. Nevertheless, in the few mills in which they were installed, rotary calciners continue to operate, with possibly one or two exceptions, and to be highly successful. In these 10 years, the Cummer type of rotary calciner has disappeared. All rotaries now used are of the cement-mill type with a diameter of 6 or 7 ft. and length of 80 to 120 feet.

A unique feature of Potash Co. of America's A new potash property near Saskatoon, Sask., is the use of semi-dome-shaped buildings for product storage. Four domed structures, timber-framed and corrugated-sheet covered, are being built; each designed to handle 20,000 cu yd. The relatively small capacity units, PCA believes, give flexibility not only in storing different grades and sizes of product, but also in permitting greater ease in shipping products as market demands change. The domed buildings are 150-ft diam, comprised of a 16-ft-high concrete wall base, topped with a metal sheet-covered octagonal timber frame. The dome of each unit is designed to fit very closely the angle of repose of the contained material, which results in the maximum usable volume. The entire roof is flood coated with a bitumin to provide a complete weather seal.

(New York Meeting, February, 1913.) THE Hadfield method of producing sound steel ingots has been the subject of a paper 1 read before the Iron and Steel Institute, so that it will be unnecessary to describe it fully here. The object of the method is to make possible the production of steel ingots in which the pipe is almost entirely obliterated, and it is applicable particularly to the production of sound ingots, from which good rails could be rolled. The method in brief consists in casting the ingots on cars, usually with the small end down. Each ingot mold is provided with a sand top, rammed up in the well-known manner. After the mold is filled to the desired height with steel, a layer of slag about 0.5 in. thick is placed upon it and the balance of the mold is then filled with charcoal. Then, through suitable piping, an air blast is directed in numerous jets upon the charcoal, which is burned thereby, the combustion supplying additional beat to the top of the ingot, which helps to keep the top fluid and to retard its solidification, while the lower parts are rapidly losing heat by its transfer to the mold. By-one plan the ingots are cast in molds placed upon bogies, movable trucks, or platforms, in the position A, Fig. 1. The ingots are cast vertically on bogies, say four or more ingots on each bogie, as may be found most convenient, and the upper surface of the steel is maintained in a molted condition during the transit of the ingots from the casting pit to the stripper. This is effected by a series of air pipes, for example, three in number, with jets or holes on the under surface of such pipes, placed preferably horizontally, arranged in such a manner as to cause jets of air to impinge on the upper surface of the ingots. The 114th (New York) Meeting of the Institute will be held in the third week of February, 1917. The Committee on Papers and Publications has set Dec: 1, 1916; as the closing date for the receipt of manuscripts intended for this meeting. Manuscripts must be received by the Secretary on or before this date. If they are sent through members of the technical committee they must be sent to those committees enough in advance of the time to be forwarded and in the hands of the Secretary by the time specified. While Dec. 1, 1916, is the final closing date, it is a great advantage to get papers in as much before that time as possible as it enables them to be submitted in proof form to their authors. Papers received on or before Nov. 1, 1916, will, as far as possible, be published in the January Bulletin or earlier, thus giving good distribution among the members in advance of tile meeting. The Institute's records show that the discussion of papers is very rnuch better when they are distributed somewhat in advance of the meeting instead of in the Bulletin which goes out immediately preceding the meeting.

Van Stone mine area is situated at the head of Onion Creek on the northwest flank of Gillette Mountain, Stevens County, Washington. The di strict was found during World War I, but the mine did not come into production until 1952. Production to the end of 1965 was 2,242,960 tons of ore that yielded 10,700 tons of lead concentrates and 120,000 tons of zinc concentrates. The area is part of the Selkirk Mountains Zinc-Lead Belt, or Kootenay Arc, extending from near Revelstoke, British Columbia, to Colville, Washington. A thick but incomplete section of Paleozoic marine formations occurs in the Kootenay Arc and is overlain by marine and continental Mesozoic formations. Both are invaded by Late Mesozoic-Tertiary batholiths. The belt is characterized by open complex folding and extensive high-angle and local thrust faulting. Principal ore deposits occur in the highly deformed carbonate rocks of Cambrian age-the Maitlen (Laib) and Metaline formations. The Van Stone mine occurs along a steeply S-shaped fold lying between the Kaniksu Batholith on the west and the Rogers Mountain Fault, a northeast-trending fault on the west flank of the Gillette Mountain Anticline, to the southeast. The fold is cut by northeasttrending faults containing notoriously irregular lamprophyric, diabasic, and pebble dikes. The host rocks, lower Paleozoic dolomites, are decolorized, silicified, and silicated in the mine area. Jasperoid and tremolite are the common alteration minerals. Other gangue minerals are barite, pyrite, brucite, calcite, and, near the batholith, pyrrhotite. Ore minerals are galena, jamesonite, and sphalerite. Ore minerals occur in bunches and pods intergrown with tremolite and jasperoid. Zinc is roughly eight times more abundant than lead. The highest ore outcrops at 3870 feet elevation, and an undeterminable portion has been removed by glacial scour. The lowest drill hole penetration has reached 3220 feet elevation. Oxidation ranges up to several hundred feet in depth and may be most closely related to pre-glacial groundwater circulation. The area of the mine was completely over-ridden by Pleistocene continental glaciers, and the present erosion surface is nearly continuously blanketed by up to 150 feet of glacial outwash.

Rock pressure against the supports for underground workings in certain mines becomes sufficiently severe to crush sound timbers. The cost of maintenance of these mines increases critically as the workings are extended. "Heavy ground " and "swell-jng ground" are terms commonly applied to a condition of excessive pressure from the wall rock. Defined for the purposes of this paper, "heavy ground" delivers gravi-tative pressure on the supports of a mint opening; "swelling ground" delivers pressure arising from expansion of the wall rock. Mining problems created by heavy ground have been studied extensively by mining engineers, as in the recent Symposium on Block caving.' A parallel study of rock bursts2 attacks the field of ground that ruptures under strain. The problem of swelling ground, which has received less current attention, is the subject of this paper. An ExaMPLe of Swelling Ground Severe cases of swelling ground are found in the gougy shear zones in mines along the western Sierra Nevada, where the veins are accompanied by faults through altered serpentine, schist and slate. For example, along troublesome stretches in the ldaho Maryland mine, Grass Valley, California, swelling ground continues to crush drift timbers, with diminishing intensity, for 3 to 10 years after entry. During this period, from five to nine generations of crushed timber sets must be replaced and a large additional tonnage of scaly rock and wet gouge must be removed from the drift to make room for this succession of new timbers. After "the squeeze has been taken out of the ground" the timbers will stand for years, until they collapse from decay. Heaving of floor and footwall along drifts develops soon after the timber sets are placed and frequent grading down of the track is necessary to keep it serviceable and to maintain headroom. If sills are placed under the drift posts, the sets break more quickly and the track becomes impassable at once. When the floor is left Open? and the bottoms of posts and stulls are pencil-pointed, the scaly ground of the fault zone swells up around the timbers (Fig. I) instead of breaking them (Fig. 2). A foot or two of this encroaching ground is trimmed from the floor and lower sides of the drift several times before complete retimbering is necessary. when a set of timber fai1s under the Pressure of swelling ground, there is no immediate fall of timber and broken rock to fill the drift, as is customary in heavy, caving ground. Instead, ground swelling from sides, top and bottom gradually closes the opening, over a period of weeks or months, and no especial hazard to workmen is present while they have room to walk through the narrowing drift. Slip features and formation of stress-induced mm-tensite have been studied in single crystals of fl phase Cu-Zn alloys in the composition range between 43 and 48 at. pct Zn. A phenomenological analysis is presented in which the glide planes and directions that me associated with the inhomogeneous shear in the martensite phase are predicted from the experimentally determined habit planes and macroscopic shear directions. It is shozun that the resolved shew component of the applied stress on the secondary shew system is a very important factor governing the formation of stress-induced martensite. A comparison is made between martensitic phases that form spontaneously upon cooling and those phases that arise from deformation. THE ß phase in Cu-Zn alloys is unstable and may transform spontaneously by a martensitic transformation1-3 during cooling. Thermoelastic and burst-type spontaneous martensitic phases have been observed3 in the composition range between 38 and 42 at. pct Zn. Martensite forms in alloys containing more than 42 at. pct Zn only by cold work below a temperature denoted as Md.4 Thus, alloys near the equiatomic composition can undergo a stress-induced transformation upon cold work at room temperature. Although data have been obtained concerning the effect of temperature5 and composition4 on the deformation of polycrystalline Cu-Zn alloys, it is rather surprising that few detailed studies6-8 on 6 brass have been conducted for single crystals where the stresses acting on crystallographic planes can be determined. A thorough understanding of transformation mechanisms requires knowledge of the role of stress and plastic strain. With this objective in mind we have made an investigation of the stress-induced rnartensite transformation in single crystals of 0 brass in the composition range between 43 and 48 at. pct Zn. Particular emphasis is given to the morphology and crystallographic features and a comparison is made between stress-induced and spontaneous martensite. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Master alloys having nominal zinc contents of 43, 45, and 48 at. pct were prepared from spectroscop-ically pure metals (>99.999 pct) in sealed quartz tubes under a partial pressure of helium. These alloys were cut into several pieces and converted into small rods by melting in quartz tubes. Subsequently, single crystals were grown from the rods by the Bridgman technique and homogenized for 3 hr at 820°C. Lattice parameter measurements were made from stress- relieved filings. Compositions, as determined from the reported variation of lattice parameter with atomic percent zinc,' indicated a zinc loss of less than approximately 0.25 at. pct. The single crystals were electroturned using a phosphoric acid electrolyte into tensile specimens each with a center section of 1 mm diam and 1 cm gage length. Cylindrical specimens approximately 3 mm in diam and 10 mm long and spark-machined rectangular blocks approximately 3 by 3 by 10 mm were prepared for compression studies. These blocks were stress-relieved and electropolished to eliminate any stresses introduced by spark machining. Crystal orientations were determined to an accuracy of ±2 deg primarily from back-reflection Laue photographs, and sometimes by the rotating single-crystal method. Figs. 1 to 3 show the location of the tension and compression axes within unit stereographic triangles. All specimens were deformed plastically at room temperature using an Instron machine, the crosshead speed being 0.02 or 0.05 cm per min. A hard steel hemisphere was placed at the upper end of the compression samples to achieve uniaxial loading. Trace normals of slip markings and habit planes of strain-induced martensite were determined to an accuracy of ±4 deg from the rectangular blocks by a two-surface analysis and from cylindrical specimens by measuring the angle between the tensile (or compression) axis and the tangent to the surface trace for different rotations about the deformation axis. I WISH to express my keen appreciation of the article on the above subject by Coe and Clevenger.1 It has been doubly interesting to me, for the reason that the experience recorded and the principles evolved practically parallel the results of similar investigations made by myself and others at The Lucky Tiger Mine, El Tigre, Sonora, Mex. An outline of the work at El Tigre may aid in confirming the principles expressed by Coe and Clevenger. El Tigre has the unenviable distinction of possessing a slime with a much lower settling rate than any recorded in the article discussed. Under most favorable conditions the settling rate is about one-third that reported for the Liberty Bell mill, and one-tenth that reported for the Nipissing, Golden Cycle, and Presidio mills. This slow settling characteristic of Tigre ore has necessitated careful investigation of settling phenomena throughout the various evolutions of the plant. PREVIOUS SETTLING INVESTIGATION AT TIGRE During construction work at the mill, the Metallurgical Engineer in charge, D. L. H. Forbes, ran a series of experiments on settling. His tests proved that deep settling tanks were not ordinarily necessary. The use of tanks 2 or 3 ft. in depth was suggested.2 Later experiments demonstrated that the following principles of settling applied to Tigre pulp.3 1. In settling dilute pulp, settling rates are independent of pulp depth. 2. In settling thick pulp, settling rates are approximately proportional to pulp depth.4

WHEN men drive haulage equipment ranging up to 22 tons in an open pit operation, they must live with the realization that their safety is dependent upon the machines they drive and how well they operate them. The hazards inherent in their jobs must be recognized, met, and defeated. It comprises a never ending struggle toward perfection-an almost un- obtainable goal. The Jones & Laughlin Benson Mines, at Adirondack State Park in New York, created a safety program which resulted in only one three day lost time accident from April 1948 to April 1952. At the very start of the program, management of the open-pit operation recognized the hazards existing at Benson. The program was designed to meet each danger. With a knowledge of the problem faced, the process of minimizing each facet was planned along lines of maintenance of equipment and training of personnel. Its success is evident. In the ever-present struggle, care and maintenance of machines and application of experience to new equipment design are mainstays. Truck Haulage Benson produced 2.9 million tons of crude iron ore and 1.6 million tons of waste in 1951. To do the job, truck mileage reached 500,000 miles. The tremendous mileage emphasized to safety planners, the fact that the more work done, the greater the possibility of risk in haulage operations. Instrumenting the aim of the safest equipment possible is a methodical servicing program. Like other segments of the drive, the servicing program is based on greater production with fewer accidents. Every truck is serviced at least once per eight-hr shift. Examination includes inspecting and tightening wheel studs, checking tires, steering apparatus, lights, brakes, wipers, heaters, fire extinguishers, and refueling. A running history of the equipment's operating life is kept in the form of service and maintenance records. Machine operators are constantly on the alert for malfunctioning of units. At the first sign of trouble the truck is returned to the garage for exchange. No truck functioning incorrectly is kept on the line, regardless of its shift check schedule. The program resulted in a reduction of the number of costly overhauls and cut down the number of haulage accidents. Miscellaneous Mobile Equipment Auxiliary units, operating within the pit, have presented definite safety problems. The highest accident rate in the pit occurred on trucks carrying water and bits to the churn mills. The weight and awkwardness of bits and drill stems, combined with remote delivery points were direct causes of numerous accidents. Here, the problem has been one of equipment handling, rather than haulage. All air compressors for secondary drilling are truck mounted, facilitating mobility. In addition to making it easier to move the equipment, truck mounting has eliminated many of the hazards connected with relocating machinery. By making air compressors independent of other units, drilling operations have been speeded up considerably. Unseen rocks in the path of moving vehicles are a constant source of tire damage. At Benson the problem has been met by supplying each loading crew with a bulldozer for cleanup operations. The pitman directs the dozer operation, and when truck drivers back into loading areas, he serves as an extra set of eyes. Modern Truck Garage Provides Drive-Through Service Simplicity is the essence of any preventative maintenance program. At Benson, a modern garage, with a drive-through service bay simplifies servicing. Shift inspection of the 22-ton haulage units is accomplished with minimum delay and maximum thoroughness. Major repair work and periodic overhauls are done in the repair section of the truck garage. Crane facilities for handling heavy assemblies ease the job and add to the safety factor. Variations of a very reliable geochemical field test for beryllium developed by Patten and Ward, have been adapted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to facilitate rapid testing of reconnaissance samples and to aid in rapid examination of known occurrences. Although several qualitative tests for detecting beryllium have been described in the literature,1,2,3, the Patten-Ward4 morin geochemical field method has the advantages of being rapid and being quantitative for minute amounts of beryllium. In addition to the morin field method, Patten, in cooperation with Griffitts, have developed a contact- print method for determining beryllium in hand specimens.5 The semiquantitative method can be used for rapid screening of samples in exploration or reconnaissance work. The use of beads for fusing samples provides a more rapid test, but gives less accurate results than the method developed by Patten and Ward. The semiquantitative method, however, requires less equipment and combines three stock solutions into one reagent for easy application. Estimates of samples in the range from 3 to 1000 ppm varied from about 0.25 to 5 times the actual beryllium content.

The extraction of iron oxide from several types of siliceous iron ore by digestion in sulfuric acid solutions was investigated in the temperature range from 80 to 258°F at concentrations from 10-60% H2SO4. Degree and rate of extraction were found to be critical with respect to both temperature and acid concentration, requiring temperatures in excess of 250° F and acid concentrations of 50% to effect 80-90% extraction of iron oxide in 60 min. Rate of extraction is directly related to surface area and apparently controlled by the rate of chemical reaction. The activation energy was found to be approximately 25,000 cal per g mol. Extraction characteristics of the several ores were found to be similar. The Department of Minerals and Metals Engineering at the University of Wisconsin conducts a continuing research program to develop processes for the utilization of low-grade iron ore deposits such as the nonmagnetic taconites of the Wisconsin Gogebic range. Methods under study include high-intensity magnetic and high-tension electrical concentration, flotation, direct reduction and chemical extraction. Concentration of a number of low-grade siliceous iron ores by the extraction of silica in sodium hydroxide solutions has been reported by the writer and others in the literature.1,2,3,4 Residual concentrates containing as much as 65% iron have been obtained from taconites containing less than 30%. Currently an alternative approach is under study, namely the dissolution of iron oxides from siliceous gangue by extraction in acid, with subsequent recovery of the iron from solution. Such a process for extracting iron oxide from the low-grade oclitic deposits of Alberta with hydrochloric acid was investigated and described by Gravenor, Govett and Rigg.5 The current investigation, which is entirely devoted to extraction with sulfuric acid, is the subject of this paper. In part, the objective of this research was to determine the possibility of leaching iron ores in situ with sulfuric acid. The investigation of a recovery method is left to later research. The ores investigated contained hematite (Fe2O3) as the principal iron-bearing mineral and minor amounts of goethite (Fe2O3 .H2O), magnetite (Fe3O4), and iron-bearing silicates. The gangue was essentially quartz occurring as single crystals and microcrystalline aggregates. Detailed description of the ores may be found in the literature.1,2,4,6 A comparison of the specific ores used in this investigation is shown in the partial analyses of Table I. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS All extractions were made at atmospheric pressure using beakers with a mechanical stirrer for those tests run below the boiling point, and Erlenmeyer flasks for those at the boiling point. A thermostatically controlled hot plate was used for heating, and this maintained the mean temperature within the solution to within ±3°F during extraction. The sample of ore for extraction was weighed to + 0.02 g. For tests below the boiling point, the sample was added to the beaker containing the sulfuric acid solution at the desired temperature. Grain boundary grooving as it occurs in a 5.5-deg simple-tilt nickel bicrystal immersed in a saturated Ni-S liquid has been studied. A 1/3 (t= time) dependence for the depth of the groove indicates that the rate -controlling meckanism for groove developvnent is volume diffusion in the liquid. The activation energy for the diffusive process is estimated at 15 kcal per mole. Using an extended form of W. W. Mullins&apos; analysis for grooving reactions, a computer is employed to fit the appropriate diffusion equation by a numerical method. From the analysis a possible method of measuring L.S. the solid-liquid interfacial tension is demonstrated. WHEN a polycrystalline solid is heated in equilibrium with a saturated fluid phase, grooves will form at the intersections of the grain boundaries and surface. The equilibrium root angle of these grooves is determined by the balance between the grain boundary and solid-fluid interfacial tensions. The grooves deepen and widen with time due to a difference in chemical potential between the flat interface and the curved interface of the groove. In this investigation solid-liquid interaction at a grain boundary is studied, with the object to determine the mechanism of grain boundary grooving in the presence of a saturated liquid. Extension of Mullin analysis then permits the estimation of the solid-liquid interfacial tension. Herring has demonstrated by dimensional analysis that the quasi-steady state change of the dimensions of a small particle during sintering is proportional flow, evaporation-condensation, volume-diffusion, and surface-diffusion mechanisms, respectively, if geometric similarity of consecutive configurations of the particles holds. Mullins has extended this analysis to grain boundary grooving. In the case of shallow grooves he solves the diffusion equations for evaporation-condensation, volume-diffusion, and surface-diffusion mechanisms, and obtains the same time dependence for any linear dimension of a groove as Herring found for the change in dimension of small particles. In Mullins&apos; analysis2&apos;3 grain boundary grooving of a bicrystal by volume diffusion in the presence of a saturated fluid phase was considered. Several assumptions were made prior to the analysis: 1) the solid-fluid interfacial tension is independent of crystallographic orientation; 2) the Gibbs-Thompson equation relating curvature and chemical potential is applicable at the solid-fluid interface; 3) the relaxation time of the diffusion field is small compared with the time for appreciable changes in the curvature of the groove, so that the diffusion is divergence-less; and 4) the groove has a small slope relative to the initial flat interface. Usually this last condition is fulfilled only for solid-gas systems. The solution of the diffusion equation under the above conditions produces a t1/3 dependence for any linear dimension of the groove in the case where volume diffusion is rate-controlling. The t1/3 dependence is valid because geometric similarity of the grooves exists for all time. EXPERIMENT In the experiment a 5.5-deg nickel bicrystal of <100> simple-tilt orientation was used.4 Grooving was studied in the presence of a saturated Ni-S liquid alloy as a function of time at 750°, 800°, 850°, and 900°C. This paper considers, from an engineering viewpoint, several factors involved in creating, designing and locating horizontal barriers for controlling water coning. This is an effort to consolidate new concepts with previous information so that a reasonable selection of barrier materials, dimensions and vertical position can be made. Coning theories previously developed are briefly reviewed and an effort i,s made to reduce the results of coning-theory calculations to a point where routine calculations can be made with a desk calculator. It is expected that these simplified calculations will give usable predictions of the amounts of improvement attainable with barriers of various dimensions. Apparatus and procedures used for testing the suitability of commercial cements are described and test results are presented. INTRODUCTION Just about as soon as the phenomenon of water coning was recognized as an oilfield problem, there were suggestions that the production of water coning could be controlled or completely suppressed by means of horizontal barriers. It was also suggested that natural barriers such as shale streaks were helpful in restricting bottom-water production. The implication was that wells not having the benefit of continuous shale streaks to suppress bottom waters should, in some way, be supplied with an artificial barrier. With regard to the selection of barrier materials, there are many references which give the merits of liquid barriers.&apos;,&apos; These liquids include surface-active agents," recipitates&apos; and emu1sions. There is no real need to review the merits of these materials again. This paper deals with the use of solid barriers which could be made from various cements. The two major restrictions placed on these barrier cements are that (1) they must be commercially available in large quantities, and (2) they must be applicable by means of standard tools and equipment with techniques that have been fully developed and are in general use at the present time. A schematic drawing of a horizontal barrier in a reservoir is shown in Fig. 1. Two maximum stable water cones are illustrated-—-one for the wellbore diameter and the other for a barrier. A maximum stable cone is one that has attained its maximum volume at the critical production rate and is on the threshold of producing water. The volume displaced by each water cone and the rise in water table are indications of the amount of water-free oil produced. Corrections for porosity, connate water and residual oil, of course, must be applied. The water-oil interface which defines a maximum stable cone is called a free surface. It is a surface over which the pressure is constant. This free surface has the shape of a limiting streamline at and below which there is no movement or transport. The shape of the water cone describes the pressure drop in the reservoir. The effect of a completely impermeable barrier on the cone shape is essentially the same as extending the wellbore out to the barrier radius. The placement of a horizontal barrier requires that a horizontal fracture be created using a single-point entry technique. Two methods may be employed for filling this fracture. One method consists of propping the fracture before filling with cement. The other consists of fracturing with fracture fluid, then immediately following with cement

Some of the traditional areas of spiral application are described, together with examples of new applications such as treatment of fine alluvials and tailings, separation of liberated minerals at coarse sizes, and fine coal recovery.

it is an established fact that the collecting properties of xanthates and anionic collectors are dependent on the hydrocarbon chain length. This is ascribed to the greater adsorption densities caused by increasing the xanthate chain length. As batch flotation tests showed similar trends for amines, an investigation of the adsorbing properties of amines was undertaken. Because earlier investigations showed adsorption densities for dodecylamine salts on quartz varying as much as 20 times under apparently similar conditions,1-4 it was decided to make a survey of the changes in adsorption density due to the drying conditions of the quartz.
