The computer-aided simulation model re¬ported here is an extension of the one developed by the author while at The Pennsylvania State University. The present model, however, includes consideration of the deformability and secondary fracturing of the porous system. The modifications enable simulation of multiphase shallow unsaturated-saturated and/or artesian ground water systems in dynamic mining environments. The model has been validated, verified, and evaluated on a number of field case studies and the results have been excellent.

THE binding of the boshes and in walls of blast furnaces has always been an expensive piece of work. When the old stone stack was replaced by the iron shell, the brickwork was kept at a thickness of five feet or more. These five-foot walls were still too thick, and the practice now is to have as thin walls as possible and to have a free circulation of air about the brickwork of the furnace. The "basket," or lattice-work binding, accomplishes this object, but it is expensive, as to first cost, and, if any change in the diameter of a furnace has to be made, it necessitates an alteration of the binding or of the thickness of the walls.

When the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund was established in. 1929 the donors mentioned certain types of projects to which preference might be given in selecting those to he financed by the income from the Fund. One suggestion. was that the projects "be of particular benefit to young engineers." This modest little book meets this specification most aptly. It seeks to guide the engineer-particularly the young one-with the least loss of time and effort to the most convenient source of authentic information regarding any topic in which he may at the moment be interested. Knowing the best place to find the literature on a subject is almost as valuable-and far more practicable-than maintaining a library of one's own large enough to provide the information.

The results of two studies into the effects of undermining offshore room and pillar workings by longwall faces are presented. The first study indicated no potential instability from undermining one level of room and pillar workings. On the basis of this it was decided to undermine two levels of room and pillar workings, again monitoring pillar stability. The results showed no signs of increased instability.

The American Society of Civil Engineers, by a vote of its membership of six to one, has favored the acceptance of the invitation of the three present Founder Societies, namely, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Institute of Mining Engineers, to become a, fourth Founder Society and share with the rest the occupancy of the Engineering Societies' Building. Fortified by this vote, the Board of Direction of the American Society of Civil Engineers has caused a contract to be entered into between, that Society and the present Founder Societies and the United Engineering Society. Work has already begun on adding three stories to the Engineering Societies' Building at a cost not to exceed 1250,000. This cost will be borne by the American Society of Civil Engineers, thereby making its contribution approximately equal to that of the other Founder Societies.

Nitrogen solubilities in water at 100, 200, and 400 psi, in the temperature range 100 to 175C, were determined using an automated system involving flash evaporation and gas chromatography. Rates of gas transfer into a standard laboratory auto-clave were measured by the same technique. The rates at which a gas can dissolve into such a reactor were found to be close to the rates of oxygen consumption observed during the oxidation of several mineral sulfides, indicating that gas transfer might be a rate-limiting step in autoclave leaching.

THE typical block coal of the Brazil (Indiana) District differs in chemical composition but little from the coking coals of Western Pennsylvania. The physical difference, however, is quite marked ; the latter has a cuboid structure made up of bibuminous particles lying against each other, so that under the action of heat fusion through- out the mass readily takes place, while block coal is formed of alternate layem of rich bituminous matter and a charcoal-like substance, which is not only very slow of combustion, but so retards the transmission of heat that agglutination is prevented, and the coal burns away layer by layer, retaining its form until consumed. It is interesting to note that an attempt has been made to rationalize the effect of prestrain on the strength of Hastelloy X-280 after various aging treatments. However, two points raised by the authors seem to be somewhat unclear. 1) Concerning their Fig. l(a), the authors state: "Extensive dislocation networks are still in evidence. The 24-hr aging at 1500°F and the 15-min soak at 1350°F did not eliminate the dislocations introduced by the 20 pct cold reduction." This is, of course, to be expected since complete "elimination" of dislocations would require recrystallization which does not occur at 1500°F in Hastelloy X. However, recovery

A key point in the design and operation of a modern mining operation is the construction of what is called an ore-body model or block model. This model is a representation of reality constructed from predicted information. The blocks involved are merely subsets of the overall model which allows manipulation of the contained information on a local scale. In general, block models enable mine planners to effectively select the most promising means of extracting the ore both physically and economically. The uses of a block model can be quite diversified, but one must realize that a single model that satisfies all curiosities and forms of expertise is difficult to construct.

In 1918 A.S.T.M. held a Symposium on Stress- Corrosion Cracking that was confined entirely to brass, because at that time few people were interested in the phenomenon as it applied to other metals. 262. Parallel Grouping. - Connected with the subject of twin crystals is that of the parallel position of associated crystals of the same species, or of different species. Crystals of the same species occurring together are very commonly in parallel position. In this way large crystals, as of calcite, quartz, fluorite, are sometimes built up of smaller individuals grouped together with corresponding faces parallel. This parallel grouping is often seen in crystals as they lie on the supporting rock. On glancing the eye over a surface covered with crystals a reflection from one face will often be accompanied by reflections from the corresponding face in each of the other crystals, showing that the crystals are throughout similar in their positions.

THE Russellton preparation plant of Republic Steel Corp., located north of Pittsburgh, Pa., prepares 395x0-in. Thick-Freeport coal by means of a 13-ft 6-in. diam Chance cone and 16 No. 7 Deister tables. The plant feed ranges between 370 and 410 tons per hr, of which approximately 31 pct is 1/4xO-in. size, and the plant reject ranges between 14 and 16 pct of the feed.

SME-AIME's Planning Committee established Working Party No. 22 in September 1974. Its charge was to: "Determine and take necessary actions to have Mining Engineering included among the disciplines on the National Professional Engineering Examinations." The first national examinations in "Mining/Minerals Engineering" will be given during April 1979, in states that request questions from the National Council of Engineering Examiners (NCEE), Seneca, S.C. From a survey by NCEE, mining engineering is recognized as a specialty in professional engineering registration in 25 states. In addition, 19 states give examinations in mining engineering. At press time, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia have indicated they will use the April 1979 exam.
