The knowledge of the existence of petroleum in Southern California dates back to the days of the missions. The presence of asphaltum and semisolid bitumen was reported at Santa Barbara in 1792, but no serious attempt was made to develop oil until Professor Silliman's optimistic report in 1865 started California's first oil boom. Wells were drilled in many counties of the State, but the equipment was unsuitable and the drilling difficult and no production was obtained except in Ventura County. Even there the production was of little importance commercially, and not until the early '80s did it become sufficient to again attract attention. In 1888 the production for the State had reached a total of about 700,000 bbl. per year, practically all light oil produced in Ventura County, Pico Canyon, Los Angeles County and in the Puente Hills. The production of petroleum attained the dignity of an industry in 1895 when the Los Angeles City and Coalinga fields were discovered. The subsequent development has been remarkable, and in 20 years the production has increased from 1,000,000 to 100,000,000 bb1. per year. The refining industry has kept pace with the production of oil. The Pacific Coast Oil Co., the predecessor of the Standard Oil Co. of California, was the virtual pioneer refining company of the State, having built a refinery at Alameda about 1880. When purchased by the Standard, about 1902, it was dismantled and the refinery at Point Richmond was built. The Richmond refinery is now one of the largest in the world, having a capacity in excess of 60,000 bbl. per day. A small refinery was built by the Union Oil Co. at Santa Paula in the early days of the industry and later many asphalt refineries were in operation in Southern California. The Pacific Coast Oil Co. was then, as has been its successor, the Standard Oil Co. of California, the principal refiner and marketer of light products, the most valuable of which was kerosene. Before the opening of the twentieth century, gasoline of excellent quality was produced, though it was always a drug on the market and was produced for the simple reason that its presence rendered the flash and fire tests of the kerosene too low. It has been repeatedly questioned whether estimates of oil reserves are of any practical value, as the greater number of such calculations previously made have subsequently been proved to be grossly inaccurate. But even admitting partial justification for such statements, it must be evident that some idea, however approximate, of the available reserves of essential minerals—petroleum included—is of vital importance in mapping their development and the future trend of the related industries, particularly if it is kept constantly in mind that these estimates are not only never intended as a final word but must continually be subject to revision in accordance with the changes in their component factors. The value of these estimates, therefore, hinges on the clear understanding of what is meant by reserves and that the figures can only apply within the limited time when the controlling factors remain unchanged. It should be understood, further, that while estimates of possible and probable oil deposits are as a rule but idle conjectures, appraisals of proven oil reserves can undoubtedly be made with an ever-increasing degree of accuracy. And it is with this in mind that in the present study the endeavor has been to estimate only the world's proven oil reserves and to leave out of consideration the questionable volume of the probable and possible oil reserves. Such a survey presupposes further a clear distinction between the known amount of oil underground in proven fields at any one time, and the proven reserves: the portion that can be economically brought to the surface and made available for utilization. Only a fraction of the petroleum stored underground in proven fields— usually associated with natural gas—is or can be economically brought to the surface, and not all of the oik brought to the surface is economically utilized; also, although practically all the natural gas can be economically recovered and utilized, in actual practice a large part of the total volume that reaches the mouth of the well is wantonly blown into the air and wasted. It is thus estimated that in the United States only some 25 per cent of the petroleum stored underground in proven fields is actually brought to the surface; and in actual practice close to 25 per cent of the total gas produced is now absolutely wasted. The equilibrium between Ir-Fe or Rh-Fe alloys, iron oxide (wüstite or magnetite), and CO2-CO atmospheres has been determined at 1200°C. The data are used to derive the activities in these binary solid solutions. Both systems show negative deviations from Raoult's law. The lattice parameters are given for the investigated Ir-Fe and Rh-Fe alloys. IRIDIUM and iron form a continuous series of fcc solid solutions at elevated temperatures.' Rhodium-rich Rh- Fe alloys have fcc structure.' In the medium concentration range an ordered bcc phase is stable at temperatures up to about 1300°C. Phase relations in iron-rich alloys are not well-known. No thermody-namic data are available for these alloys. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental method used was to measure the equilibria between a gas phase of known CO2/C0 ratio, the alloy, and iron oxide (wüstite or magnetite). In one series of experiments the alloys of known composition were heated in CO 2-CO gas mixtures. After treatment (usually 1 day) the sample was quenched to room temperature and its surface examined visually to determine whether an oxide tarnish had formed. The procedure was repeated at slightly higher CO 2/CO ratios until the CO 2/CO ratio of incipient oxidation was found. Subsequently, the CO 2/C0 ratio was lowered again in small increments until the tarnish was reduced. In other experiments mixtures of alloy and iron oxide powders were pressed into pellets and equilibrated with the CO2-CO gas phase. In order to ensure that equilibrium was attained, two specimens with different starting iron content were heated side by side; in most cases, equilibrium was approached in one pellet by reduction of iron oxide and in the other pellet by oxidation of metallic iron. The sample was quenched to room temperature, and the composition of the equilibrated alloy was determined by X-ray measurements of lattice parameters and comparison of these values with calibration curves obtained from alloys of known composition. The oxides present in the specimens were identified by comparison of their diffraction patterns with those in the ASTM Card File. It may be expected from the noble character of iridium and rhodium that no appreciable amount of iridium or rhodium is dissolved in wiistite and magnetite under the present experimental conditions. The activity of iron in the alloy is then equal to that established in the iron oxide by the COrCO atmosphere. The thermal processes for the production of metallic magnesium can be divided into two general classifications, the direct reduction of magnesia with carbon and the indirect reduction of compounds of magnesium by reducing agents that are themselves products of carbon reduction. The latter are so chosen as to cause reduction of magnesium compounds wherein only the magnesium is liberated in the vapor phase. Reducing agents used are: calcium carbide, silicon carbide, silicon, aluminum, various silicides or combinations of calcium, aluminum, silicon in iron. All of these are products of highly endothermic reactions and, with the exception of scrap aluminum, can be produced in an open, submerged arc furnace; that is, the arc is covered only by the charge itself. The more investment in energy required to prepare such a reducing agent, the less is the energy required in the subsequent step to reduce the magnesium compound to the metal. It is impossible, however, to avoid the laws of thermodynamics, no matter how much circumambulation is resorted to in the preparation of successively more powerful reducing agents. Since each such step carries forward its own inefficiencies, it appears evident that the ultimate status of such processes is dependent upon the development of by-products. The direct reduction of magnesium oxide by carbon has a decided appeal to both the scientist and the industrialist. The successful production of the carbo-thermic plant at Permanente is a significant fact in the substantiation of this concept. Like most developments, however, the history of carbon reduction of magnesia is not one of triumph after triumph, or immediate heady success to the investigators. It is understood that one of the early investigators conducted an experiment wherein he placed carbon and magnesia in one end of an evacuated tube and managed to heat this end to a temperature high enough that magnesia and carbon deposited at the other end of the tube. The charge, unreduced, appeared to have been completely transported from the hot to the cold end of the tube. This raised doubt for some time as to whether magnesia could be reduced at all with carbon. It was correctly suspected, however, that the magnesia was in fact reduced and the resultant magnesium vapor and carbon monoxide reacted upon one another upon reduction in temperature to reform the starting ingredients. Attempts were then made to dilute the two vapors by passing a considerable stream of hydrogen through an arc furnace charged with magnesia and carbon. Thus by dilution of the products it was' expected to obtain metallic magnesium. The results were positive and metallic magnesium was .0

THE question is often pondered whether the flotation process is still an art or has become a science. The fact is that flotation is a science in so many variables that only art can blend them. It is demonstrable that no less than one hundred variables are involved in any flotation operation, most of them immeasurable on a routine basis. The behavior of every one of them is always governed by orderly and unchanging law, as no man can doubt. There is nothing truly indefinite about that behavior; the only indefiniteness is in our knowledge of it, either in general or from hour to hour in the circuit. In dealing with a simultaneous equation in, say, one hundred variables, all not only affecting the outcome to some degree but many influencing each other as well, it is small wonder that the mineral-dressing profession presents a case history of debate and controversial opinion. The statement of the subject of this symposium-a symposium on flotation machines-seems to delimit and define the matters to be considered and at least the general nature of the conclusions sought. Nevertheless, in such a meeting it is not possible to meditate upon all the variables that do in one way or another affect performance of flotation machines. To attempt it would be much like trying to operate a hundred-ring circus. Perverse variables being what they are, one could expect the elephant in ring 36 to squirt a trunkful of water at the tightrope performer in ring 37 to ruin that artist's act, just as our learning to depress pyrite in the early 1920's ruined the act of the formerly faithful old Callows. HONEST DISAGREEMENTS Selective flotation dates from 1922 or 1923, when several plants established their regular flotation operations on a selective basis. Since then, two decades of efforr have gone into the development of better and better flotation machines. Many have come and gone. The competition has simmered down to perhaps a dozen machines, each one of which is staunchly defended by some operators as being the best for their particular jobs, and as scornfully dismissed by at least a few others elsewhere as being positively the poorest for theirs. These disagreements are honest disagreements, honestly arrived at after plenty of sweat. In many a flotation plant, one machine has been tried out against another under conditions as fair as they could possibly be made. Sometimes the results are on a par but more often one machine shows a consistent and unmistakable margin of superiority over the other. In equally honest and enlightened tests, machine A may win over machine B in one place, and machine B over machine A by as great a margin in another. This paper purposes to identify some of the more prominent reasons why this is so,

F. G. SMITH.-Probably someone will ask whether I discovered why the bottoms of the large shells broke out. I did not, as a result of this investigation. An experiment was made along the lines indicated in this paper, to determine whether abnormal grains greatly affected the physical properties of brass. Two ordinary test bars were annealed for 1/2 hr. at 750° C. and physical properties determined on one. The other was covered with indentations made with a peen hammer and then reannealed. for 5 hr. at 750° C. It was found in the tensile test to be made up of large grains 1/4 to 1/2 in. in diameter. The physical properties, however, differed from those of the first bar only as much as might be expected after a 5 hr. anneal under normal conditions. It appears then that the large grains produced in this manner do not ruin the physical qualities of the brass.

The largest area of high-grade cannel coals known in America is doubtless found in eastern Kentucky. Notwithstanding the popular belief to the contrary, there is no reason to doubt that these eastern Kentucky cannel-fields, following the general rule, will be uncertain and treacherous. But, taken in the aggregate, their extent is very great. The principal service to which cannel coal can be put is enriching illuminating-gas. The electric light has, to a certain extent, created a demand for better gas, and has increased the market for gas-enrichers. Before the discovery of rock-oil, coal-oil was distilled from cannel coal and cannel shale. This business was getting fairly started when the cheaper rock-oil, or petroleum, overcame it, and the great distilleries went into disuse and ruin. Now, again, the chief competitor with cannel coal is oil, namely, the cheap oil of Lima, Ohio. Under proper treatment the vile odor of this oil can be removed.

Manganese ore from the Black Rock, Kramer, and Black Jack mines in Tooele and Jaub Counties, Utah, are of acceptable grade, the U. S. Bureau of Mines has announced. Payment of a premium price of 252¢ per lb to the Copper Range Co., of Michigan for the output of its White Pine mine, has been agreed to by the DMPA. The contract will be limited to $28.6 million worth of copper. The agreement follows an RFC loan grant of $57 million to bring the White Pine property into production within three years. Increases of 5 to 6 cents over the Lake copper ceilings have been granted to the Calumet & Helca Consolidated Copper Co., for operation of "high cost" deposits, according to Jess Larson, DMPA administrator. Mr. Larson expects the move to add about one million lb of copper per month to the supply. The agreement can be cancelled on 60 days notice and is terminated automatically in the event copper ceilings are removed.

Since they were first introduced in the United States in 1964, rail mounted bucket wheel stacker-reclaimers have gained wide acceptance by the coal burning power plant group. Other installations include those in phosphate and steel mill ore storage areas. First Installation in the U.S.A. Three basic types of bucketwheels for handling stored bulk materials are now being used in the U.S. Bucketwheel stacker-reclaimers came into use in the U.S.A. in 1964 at the Chalk Point power station built by the Potomac Electric Power Co. It was decided, after serious study, to install the first slewing-boom, rail mounted bucketwheel stacker-reclaimer at this installation. It was designed with a separately counter- weighted wheel boom because the fixed counterweight of the European designed bucketwheel made it possible for the machine to overturn backwards if the wheel rested on the ground due to a possible failure of the luffing system.

Cesium metal isn't on the government's list of priority materials for stockpiling, but it may be getting a big lift in that direction. Both the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) have committed themselves to a long-range research program the outcome of which may boost annual domestic production to 37,000 lb by the year 2000. This would represent a sixfold increase in cesium consumption over the figures reported in 1968. To accomplish this dramatic increase, there must he some equally dramatic breakthroughs. Recent research efforts designed to shake the metal from its lethargic status in world markets have been concentrated in the areas of ion propulsion, thermionic power conversion and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) power generation. The activities in these areas, all of which attempt to make use of cesium's unique properties, may lead to a practical method for converting nuclear energy into electricity and a cheaper and more effective alternative to liquid propellants used in long-range space flights.

(communication to the Secretary*) :—Mr. Brown's paper on the complicated groups of veins exposed in the workings of the Bodie mine forme a valuable contribution to the literature of the structural features of ore-depoeits. It is much to be desired that managers should put into print the results of their observations of the mines under their charge. These observations, as well as data of production, kind of ores, etc., usually accumulate for years, and unless the mining geologists of the Geological Survey happen along before the mine is worked out, such data seldom get into print. About the year 1899 I went through the mines at Bodie with R. C. Turner, then superintendent, and made some notes on the veins and gangue-minerals, and collected some specimens. THE following report covers the history of the development of the mine, present equipment, methods and costs of mining and milling. In addition, a description of the ore deposit is given with emphasis on the origin of the fractures, mode and types of ore occurrence, and mechanics of granite emplacement. An endeavor has been made to present a complete and accurate statement of the San Mauricio mine, the highest grade gold mine in the Philippine Islands. Credit is gratefully acknowledged to the mine staff for descriptions and details regarding their particular field of work. All analyses were made by Mr. T. A. DeVore, head chemist, San Mauricio Mining Co. Messrs. Edward Wisser, J. E. Fyfe, A. F. Skerl and W. B. Meek, geologists, have contributed geologic information and ideas, for which thanks are extended. The Executive Committee of Marsman and Co., Inc., Managers of the Company, has kindly given permission for publication. Mr. J. B. Stapler, Division Manager, Marsman and Co., has had the courtesy to read the manuscript and to give critical and helpful suggestions. LOCATION OF AREA AND SCOPE OF WORK San Mauricio Mining Co. controls a group of 113 claims that lie immediately north of the town of Jose Pañganiban (formerly Mambulao), Camarines Norte, Luzon, P. I. (Fig. 1). Exploration work commenced in the spring of 1934; active development began in the fall of that year and has continued to the present date. Mill construction was begun Oct. 15, 1935, and production started March 10, 1936. Total production to June 1, 1939, is P10,499,105.15 ($5,249,552.57). [+]

AT the meeting of January 28 which was held too late to be reported in the February MINING AND METAL-LURGY, Messrs. Taylor, Barron, Bassett, DeGolyer, Hutchinson, Norris, Rand, Reynders, Smith, Sweetser and Callow were present. Aside from routine matters, relating to finances and membership,, the Board author-ized establishment of a payroll account and payment by check. It also approved plans for a regional meeting to be, held at Cleveland on April 19 and 20 under the auspices of the Ohio Section and the Iron and Steel Committee. Following a report from the Committee on increase of Membership, Messrs. Barron, Bassett, and Sweetser were appointed as a special committee to con-sider the feasibility of increasing the dues. Mr. Read was made secretary of this Committee. A pleasant feature of the meeting was the presence of past-presi-dent Olcott and the presentation by him to the Institute of an elaborate scrap book, covering the excursion through Mexico made by the Institute in 1901. The meeting was preceded by a dinner at which Scott Turner spoke of the problems of the Bureau of Mines and the large volume of service work for the govern-ment it was now called on to perform. M. L. Requa discussed the need of more exact data covering our national reserve of minerals. E. N. Cooper gave a vivid picture of conditions in Mexico. W. H. Bassett told of the problems before the Institute of Metals, and Zay Jeffries told of the plans for that Division now being formulated. Max W. Ball reinforced what Mr. Requa had said relative to the importance and value of conservation studies as relates to minerals.

The manufacture of pig iron for conversion into steel by the Bessemer and open-hearth processes, is now one of the most important industries of the United States. It is necessary that iron intended for this purpose should be very pure, and especially must it be comparatively free from phosphorus. Great care must therefore he exercised in the selection of proper ores, flux, and fuel. Only such ores as are practically free from phosphorus can be used, and pure fuel is as much a necessity as pure ores; though hitherto iron men have paid comparatively little attention to this point. During the course of my work as chemist for the Second Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, I' had occasion to examine some of the bituminous coals of the State fix phosphorus, and the results obtained are so interesting that I venture to present them to the notice of the members of the Institute. The coals are arranged in geological order according to the different beds, and the table shows the percentage of phosphorus in the coal and also in the coke. The greatest number of specimens have been selected from the Pittsburgh bed, because it is the principal coal-bed of Southwestern Pennsylvania, and most of the mineral fuel which is mined along the Youghiogheny and Monongahela rivers, to be used in the coke ovens of the Connellsville region and in the blast furnaces and mills of Pittsburgh and its vicinity, and to be shipped to Western and Southern markets, comes from this bed. The attention of travellers, upon the desert bordering the Great Colorado of the West, is often arrested by broad stretches of pebble-covered plains, or mesas, glittering in the sunlight from the myriads of polished surfaces, giving, at a distance, the appearance of a sheet of water. It is not alone the well-rounded, polished surface of these pebbles which commands attention, but, in addition, their nearly black or darkbrown color; and, above all, their uniform distribution in a level sheet, covering the plain in a continuous layer or pavement like a vast mosaic without sand or soil. Hundreds of square miles along the lower Colorado, especially in Yuma county, Arizona, and on the borders of the Colorado Desert in California, are thus covered. It is evident that the former cxtent of such pebbly plains was much greater than now, for the continuity of the mesa is broken into by the numerous dry arroyos or " washes " formed during exceptional showers or deluging rains. In some places there is an underlying bed of pebbly conglomerate, a mixture of pebbles and sand; in others the pebbles rest on a sandy, earthy foundation. The rounded pebbles are distinctly alluvial in origin, and pertain to the ancient Colorado drainage system; but it is not comprehensible that such regular layers of polished pebbles could have been left by subsiding floods or river action. Attention was early directed by me to these remarkable plains, first examined in 1853, when exploring for the United States and seeking a practicable route for a railway to the Pacific coast.* The cut and polished surface of the pebbles

It is a matter of frequent record in the literature that manganese will desulfurize molten iron under proper conditions. Particularly has much been written with regard to this action in the mixer, and numerous reports have been published describing experiments in which advantage was taken of this phenomenon in order to obtain a purer iron for the open hearth. The question of sulfur elimination in the ladle has, however, received comparatively little attention. The reaction by which sulfur is removed is considered to be: FeS + Mn = MnS + Fe. The manganese sulfide, being but sparingly soluble in the iron, and of a lower density, will rise from the body of the metal and collect as a slag on the surface. It is therefore an action taking place solely in the metal, and independent of interaction between slag and metal. As will be shown later the presence of slag on the metal tends to offset the effect of manganese elimination. It is this fact which distinguishes desulfuriza-tion in the ladle from desulfurization in the mixer, for it has been shown1 that the amount of sulfur eliminated in the mixer is closely tied up with the composition of the slag. Experimental Procedure In order to ascertain the extent of and the factors controlling this elimination in the ladle, several casts were sampled carefully at the blast furnace and again when the ladles were being emptied, either at the mixer, open hearth, or foundry. In the petroleum industry, the process known as oil well cementing is the equivalent of pressure grouting in the mining and construction industries. The science of oil well cementing has been known and practiced for many years. At the present time it has been brought to a high degree of perfection in the handling of many different types of jobs, all of which are known as oil well cementing. In order to understand more easily these processes, we will discuss briefly several different types of oil well cementing jobs, the purposes for which they are performed, and the methods of their accomplishment. It is believed that some of .these procedures, in a modified form, can be applied to pressure grouting projects in general. Originally, oil well cementing consisted of placing a neat cement slurry about a steel casing set in a bore hole. Cement is used about these casings to protect them from the corrosive effects of ground waters, to protect the oil and gas zones from encroachment of undesired water from other levels, to prevent the blowing out of high pressure oil and gas zones from shallow levels, and to strengthen generally and support the casing being placed in the bore hole. After the bore hole is completed to the desired depth, casing is run into the well, pumps are attached to this casing and circulation of the mud fluid in the hole is established; this circulation being from the inside of the casing into the annulus about the casing, and thence back to the surface. Next, a cement slurry is mixed and pumped into the inside of the casing string, A plug, which acts as a piston within the casing, is placed above the cement slurry. This is to separate the top of the cement slurry from mud or water which is used to shove the cement down through the casing and out into the annulus. This plug further serves the purpose of shutting off against a baffle in the bottom end of the casing string, thus stopping the flow of cement out of the casing and leaving the shoe, or lower end of the casing, surrounded by cement and also filling the annulus there above. Casing strings cemented in the above described manner may vary in length from a few feet of large diameter pipe to very long lengths of smaller pipe. As of the present date the longest string of casing which has yet been cemented is some 16,600 ft deep. As a general rule, the deeper the well and the more cement slurry used, the higher the pressures which are required to place the slurry. In parts of West Texas, it is not uncommon to use 4000 sacks to cement a single string of casing in place. Machinery used to mix the cement and place it into the casing is mounted on heavy duty, powerfully equipped trucks which are capable of negotiating any type of highway or country roads. These trucks
