Mexico's total oil production in 1943 amounted to 35,149,843 bbl. and in 1944 to 38,196,818 bbl., both being substantially larger than in 1942, when production was only 34,71j1547 bbl. Daily average figures are as follows: 95,111 bbl. in 1942; 96,301, bbl. in 1943; and 104,363 bbl. in 1944. The increase of 8062 bbl. in daily output from 1943 to 1944 was due to more refinery Tuns and an expanded volume in exports of refined products, although the export of crude oil decreased somewhat. DORSET HAGER, Tulsa, Okla. Recently we have, been doing a little work along the same lines Mr. Conkling has outlined iii his paper. I am not prepared to say that Mr. Conkling is not correct but our results do not agree with his. I think it is a question of difference in correlation and interpretation of the well records. Our cross-section of the Cushing pool does not agree with that of Mr. Conkling and we find instead of the beds thickening in the syncline, there is a tendency to thicken on top of the anticline. We took the north dome of the Cushing field, and are now trying to get all the records. It will probably be another month before we have all the data complete but our results at present do o not agree with those of Mr. Conkling at all.

Triaxial creep behavior of oil shale was investigated in the laboratory at simulated in-situ conditions. A range of temperature and stress conditions were chosen to represent those within the inter-chamber pillars of a modified in-situ retorting operation. Oil shale in grades up to 60 gallons per ton have been tested. Experimental data and a constitutive model have been presented here.

Previous studies have demonstrated the possibility of using aqua regia-extractable copper and zinc in plutonic rocks in exploration geochemistry. The present investigation compares this method of extraction with hydrofluoric-perchloric acid attack and bisulfate fusion in terms of precision and discrimination between high and low concentrations. Statistical treatment of data shows that the overall performance of the aqua regia method compares very favorably with other methods of attack.

Abstract-A continuous survey of radon gas was made in two interconnecting stopes in a southwestern U. S. uranium mine to determine how the various phases of the mining cycle affected the radon concentration. The radon was monitored continuously with five detectors. One detector monitored the intake air, one the exhaust air, and three the stope air. The radon concentrations present during slushing, blasting, and exhaust fan shutoff were compared with concentrations on a nonwork day as a base level. Inside the stope, the radon concentration increased about 40% during slushing and 425% after blasting. Intake air radon increased 1600% and the stope air increased 550% while the surface exhaust fan was off.

THERE are sufficient arguments and evidence to indicate that boron should be adsorbed to existing austenite grain boundaries during the austen-itizing treatment. Accordingly, it is possible that boron contributes to the hardenability of heat-treatable steels by the reduction of the interf acial energy of austenite grain boundaries, at which sites are nucleated heterogeneously the decomposition products of austenite. Such a reduction in interfacial energy would reduce the total energy that can be borrowed in these heterogeneous nudeation processes and thus retard the initiation of transformation. This article is interesting because it deals with the fundamentals of grinding in a novel manner. However, it is somewhat reminiscent of Mark Twain's famous evaluation of science as the production of pounds of conjecture from ounces of fact. Extrapolations abound, and some cases they are treated with a seriousness that is undeserved. Tests should undoubtedly be made of wet grinding at supercritical speeds, using smooth mill lining and mill charges of large grinding balls as well as pebbles. However, the performance predicted in the article needs more qualification than it has received.

Louis S. Cates was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 20, 1881. When Cates was in his teens, the family lived at Chestnut Hill, Mass., and he went to the public high school. Then he entered M.I.T., at first in the Department of Electrical Engineering. Next door to the Cates family lived a Mr. & Mrs. Armstrong, who were especially fond of Louis Cates. The latter always called Mr. Armstrong "Uncle." Mr. Armstrong was connected with Kidder Peabody investment firm in Boston. That firm had an office in London and Mr. Armstrong persuaded Cates, before he graduated from M.I.T., to go to work in the London office.

At the meeting of the Institute, held at Roanoke, Va., in June, 1883, I gave some facts in relation to charcoal pig iron of unusual strength, made from our carbonate ore taken from the mine at Amenia, N. Y. My object in again bringing the subject to the attention of the Institute, is to obtain, if possible, the solution of a prohlem in connection therewith. Our furnace is of the old type, stone stack 32 feet high by 9 feet 2 inches at top of bosh; bosh about 67O pitch; stone hearth; three tuyeres of 31/4-inch opening; fuel, a mixture of hard and soft coal; blast about & to # pound pressure, and heated to 400' to 600° Fahr. by iron pipe oven on top of stack. The analysis of the roasted carbonate ore, as before given to the Institute, is as follows:
