A fast, easy, and inexpensive method of determining the consolidation of overburden in surface mining operations through seismic analysis has been developed. The method involves use of a refraction seismograph which measures overall consolidation of subsurface materials, including such factors as rock hardness, stratification or lamination, fracturing or jointing, and the degree of weathering or decomposition. It also is possible to determine the thickness of various layers of subsurface materials to depths exceeding 100 ft.

Current theories of fracture maintain that brittle materials contain flaws or regions of weakness at which fracture originates. Whether a particular flaw grows depends upon the stress distribution in its vicinity and upon the presence of other stress relieving mechanisms capable of absorbing the applied energy. During the course of any truck loading operation, it will become necessary to replace hauling and loading units. Timing of replacement can be selected on the basis of necessity, or guesswork, or on a schedule derived from past performance records. Replacing units too soon results in high capital costs per hour. Waiting too long results in high maintenance costs per hour. As with any phase of a mining operation, a planned schedule can reduce overall costs and keep breakdowns within reason.

There are two elements to dispose of in a great many, of the shales that must he burned; these elements are carbon and sulfur. Dr. Thwing speaks' of the carbon, but intimates that it is safe to have a temperature of -800° C., which we find to be rather dangerous on a great tiffany shales.
