When coal is broken during mining, some of the methane trapped in the coal is released. Some recent investigations by the U.S. Bureau of Mines have shown that this methane released by breakage is only a small proportion of the total methane emission into the working section.

During the years when Americans were most active in investigations of the many substances containing nitrogen or ammonia, viz.: 1869 to 1875, my connection with certain chemical industries led me to experiments in the direction of the recovery of wastes from coal-gases. I take from my notes such memoranda as I think will be of interest, in the hope that some benefit may be derived therefrom by engineers at present attempting to utilize the waste products from coke-oven and blast-furnace gases. An examination of the conditions governing the manufacture of gas along the Atlantic seaboard, and an intimate knowledge of the mine-products used by the different large works, naturally led me at first to consider the well-known foreign methods of concentrating the available soluble salts in a modicum of water. The result was sufficiently promising to warrant a full line of experiments. At that time, no attention seemed to have been paid to the values of " gas-liquors." It is appropriate to the place of meeting, and of interest to those members of the Institute whose attention has been more or less directed to Virginia during the past eleven years, to know the result of recent developments of the Virginia coal-field. While, during the late " boom," the attention of the industrial pioneers of Virginia was mainly directed to iron-ore deposits and manufacture, it is safe to say that the coal to which, at that time, comparatively little attention was turned, and which did not directly foster a growth of " boom " towns, will prove the most reliable source of mineral wealth in the State. At the time of the last Virginia meeting of the Institute, held at Roanoke, in 1883, the Wise county coal-field was untouched by a railroad, and its economic existence was scarcely considered. Although, in the meantime, a number of reconnaissances had been made, and a fair estimate of the value of the field formed, it was not until 1891, when the Norfolk and Western and the Louisville and Nashville railroads, respectively, completed their Clinch Valley and Norton extensions to a junction at Norton, Wise county, that any development took place, and not until 1892 were shipments of any importance made. The Alabama By-Products Corp. is an entirely independent Alabama enterprise. Organization of the company stemmed from the consolidation of three important properties in the Birmingham District and a by-product coke plant at Tarrant, Ala. In 1924 ABC was merged with the Pratt Consolidated Coal Co. This merger greatly extended the company's holdings of valuable coal lands in Walker and Jefferson Counties.

THE 135th meeting of the Institute was the largest and most enthusiastic that has ever been held, sur-passing passing in numbers attending even the notable meeting of 1920. The total registration was 1493. The technical sessions and round tables, 38 in number, were spread through four instead of three days as heretofore in order to reduce the number of conflicts, and most of the A. S. T. M. Committee meetings were held over until Friday. Even so it was necessary to schedule as many as seven simultaneous technical sessions, and there were usually at least two going at once that each wished to attend. Three special luncheons and five group dinners were held, each of which strung out into an informal meeting, and yet approximately 500 came to-gether each day at the general luncheon and over 700 attended the banquet on Wednesday night. The smok-er attracted 402, and the various social affairs under the charge of the general or the women's committees were all crowded. From 10.00 a.m. Monday to 11.00 p.m. Thursday there was one long series of meetings after which the members went home to catch up on their sleep. The comment on the meeting of a member of one of the other societies, who had occasion to be much in the building, was the markedly friendly spirit of the gathering, the large numbers who were evidently old friends and acquaintances. This does seem to set the miners off somewhat from other engineering groups. So many have shared the same blankets and beans at one time or another that the annual meeting has truly come to be a family reunion.

The problem of disposing of excess waste water coming from The Anaconda Co.'s two uranium mills in Grants, N. M., first confronted the company's engineers in 1956. The increased discharge of mill waste water was due to the start-up of a second mill, recently completed to supplement production from a smaller plant which the company had operated since 1953. The waste water is mildly acidic and has a low level of radioactivity due to small amounts of uranium-natural, thorium-230 and radium-226. In addition, it contains large amounts of manganese, iron and the sulfate and chloride salts of sodium, calcium and magnesium.
