EARLY investigators1-4 reported that additions of beryllium to silver caused embrittlement. The in-termetallic phases which are now known to exist5,' were not known at the time. Solidification appeared to occur by a simple eutectic reation.4,7 (The primary beryllium-rich phase appeared globular, when the liquidus temperature was near the melting point of pure beryllium, and angular when the liquidus was much lower; in discussion of Sloman's work,4 it was suggested that this difference was due to an intermetallic compound which was not revealed by the polishing technique.) In the investigation reported here, it was found that if the compounds now known to exist were avoided, certain beryllium-silver alloys containing large amounts of the primary beryllium phase possessed sufficient ductility to be cold formed. Alloys containing 14 and 20 at. pct Ag were prepared from vacuum-cast beryllium containing 1.0 to 1.2 pct impurities and silver, 99.99+ pct pure. The elements were melted together by induction in beryllia or alumina crucibles under argon at less than 1 atm pressure. The cooling rate was adjusted by regulating the temperature of the melt and by reducing the power to zero without stopping the water flow in the induction coils, which were in contact with the crucible. Ingots were about 0.75 in. in diam with a grain size of 0.12 to 0.25 in. Microscopic investigation of transverse or longitudinal sections of an ingot cast from a temperature well above its melting point showed that, in general, the compounds did not form, presumably because of rapid cooling; the alloys consisted of beryllium-rich particles in a silver-rich matrix as shown in Fig. 1. A eutectic structure was not observed, probably .due to the low beryllium concentration of the eutectic composition and eutectic divorcement. Within a given grain, the small globules of the primary phase were all oriented in the same direction, as indicated by examination under polarized light; the orientation varied from grain to grain. This suggested that the globules were branches of the same dendrites. A thin ring around an ingot often contained this constituent. When this compound was present in large quantities, or the silver segregated so that large regions occurred with the beryllium-rich globules in contact, sections from the ingot were brittle. When the compound was initially absent, it was possible to carry out reductions in thickness of 50 pct by cold rolling with only limited edge cracking; failure did not occur until reductions of 80 pct. A typical cross section after cold rolling is shown in Fig. 2. After simple bend tests, microcracks were found; these apparently were difficult to propagate in the two-phase structure, as the specimens continued to behave in a ductile manner after the cracks appeared. Similar cracks would probably be closed during rolling. It is apparent in Fig. 2 however, that the primary beryllium particles undergo extensive plastic deformation. This paper concerns the magnitude of the amount of supersaturation that occurs in an underground reservoir during the flow of oil and gas to wells and to the amount of undersaturation that occurs during repres-suring of an oil reservoir where some effective permeability to gas exists. The study is based on earlier laboratory findings of other investigators on the rate of diffusion of gas in oil as a function of the depth of oil. Utilizing these relationships and the principles of reservoir mechanics, a quantitative estimate of undersaturation and super-saturation was calculated. The results showed that the diffusion of the gas is rapid enough that for all practical purposes no supersaturation exists during the flow of oil to wells or undersaturation during repressuring in reservoir sands having some effective permeability to gas. The reason diffusion of the gas virtually keeps the oil saturated is the long time required in radial flow for oil to reach the well and the slow rate at which pressure in reservoirs is increased during repressuring. INTRODUCTION Knowledge of the phase relationships during flow of gas and oil in an underground reservoir is essential to operating the reservoir in the most efficient manner. In material-balance calculations and in fluid-flow studies, the oil is assumed to contain all the gas that it will dissolve at given temperature and pressure. Pressure-volume-temperature relationships are normally obtained in the laboratory using "bottom-hole" or combined samples of the reservoir fluids. In such laboratory determinations equilibrium is obtained between the oil and gas in the pressure cells by mechanical agitation. During the flow of oil and gas in reservoirs, however, no comparable agitation occurs to mix thoroughly these fluids to aid in effecting equilibrium between the two phases. During repressuring of a partly depleted underground reservoir, the gas is usually injected into the reservoir faster than the oil can absorb it; consequently, the oil is undersaturated. On the other hand, as the oil flows through the reservoir to the wells during producing operations the pressure decreases faster than the gas in solution can diffuse through the oil to the gas phase. The oil therefore is supersaturated with gas. Where the oil is undersaturated, gas diffuses away from the gas-oil interface, and where it is supersaturated the gas diffuses toward the interface. In either case the gas moves from a higher to a lower saturation. This report contains the results of a study of the factors influencing the degree of nonequilibrium of the phase relations of oil and gas in porous mediums during the flow of oil through reservoirs to wells and also during the injection of gas into partially depleted sands. Data from an underground reservoir are presented and the degree of supersaturation during the flow of the oil through the reservoir to the well is approximated. Also data from another reservoir are used and the degree of undersaturation during the repressuring operation is calculated. In addition, the flow rates of oil in laboratory experiments and in underground reservoirs are compared, as data from the laboratory are often used to interpret events in the reservoir, and the rates of flow influence appreciably the degree of nonequilibrium. Much of the contents of this report was prepared in 1943; but, because of other activities during and since the war, the manuscript was left untouched until 1952, when it was decided to include an estimate of the amount of undersaturation during repressuring as well as supersaturation during flow.

The experiments of which the results and significance are set forth in this paper do not by any means cover the whole subject of the heat-treatment of the material referred to, yet they constitute a contribution to that general subject, rather than to the special department of' annealing. In its effort to combat waterlogging and soil salinity, the Water and Soils Investigation Division of WAPDA (West Pakistan's Water and Power Development Authority) has carried out an extensive program of test drilling andwater sampling since 1954. Data collected during the past ten years have permitted the delineation of fresh and saline groundwater zones in the Punjab Plain. Fresh groundwater containing generally less than 500 ppm of total dissolved solids is found in wide belts paralleling the major rivers and in other areas of fresh-water recharge. Locally, fresh groundwater extends to depths of 1500 ft and more. Saline groundwater occurs down gradient from sources of recharge, particularly in the lower central parts of the interfluvial areas, and presumably underlies most of the Punjab Plain. The groundwaters of the Punjab are characterized by their evolution from calcium, magnesium bicarbonate waters near sources of recharge to waters containing a dominant proportion of sodium. The highly mineralized waters of the Punjab are generally of the sodium chloride type, whereas in the Dera Ismail Khan District, sodium sulfate waters predominate. The pattern of distribution of saline groundwater zones and the observed gradual increase in mineral content, down gradient from sources of recharge, can be explained best by a hypothesis stressing the process of evaporation from the water table and solution of minerals within the alluvial aquifer. In 1954, detailed groundwater surveys in the Punjab Plain were initiated by WASID, the Water and Soils Investigation Division of West Pakistan's Water and Power Development Authority. The investigations, undertaken under a cooperative agreement between the governments of Pakistan and the United States, were aimed at the formulation of reclamation measures to improve waterlogged and saline soils, and to assess the groundwater potential of the Punjab and other areas of West Pakistan. The nature and urgency of WASID's primary task limited the exploration of the alluvial aquifer generally to its uppermost part. About 1030 test holes drilled in 47,000 sq miles of the Punjab defined the nature of the alluvium to depths of about 600 ft and yielded data on water quality to 400 or 500 ft. A report on the hydrology of the Punjab, based on the results of these investigations was published by WASID in 1963.' The present report incorporates data obtained by WASID since 1962 in a program of deep test drilling in the Punjab and the adjacent areas of Bahawalpur and Dera Ismail Khan District, permitting the definition of fresh and saline groundwater zones to depths of 1500 ft in some areas. Groundwater in the Punjab Plain is contained in alluvial deposits, predominantly sand and silt, which extend almost everywhere to depths of 1000 ft and more. The alluvium has been deposited by the Indus River and its tributaries since late Tertiary time and is contiguous with similar deposits in India. The Indo-Gangetic Plain extends from the foothills of the Himalayas to the ancient rocks of the Peninsular Shield in central India and to the ocean. Gradients are generally very low and range from about 1% ft per mile in the upper part of the plain to less than 1 ft per mile in the south and southwest. The monotony of the alluvial plain is broken by scattered bedrock outcrops in two of the interfluvial areas, Chaj Doab and Rechna Doab. The bedrock hills are projections of the northwest-trending Delhi-Shahpur Ridge that is largely buried by alluvium. The rocks of the buried ridge, presumably of Precambrian age, are essentially impermeable and define the lower limit of the alluvial aquifer in parts of Chaj, Rechna, and Bari doabs. Elsewhere in the Punjab, there are no outcrops of other consolidated rocks and their presence below the alluvium is conjectural. The principal areas of bedrock outcrops, near Kirana and Sangla, are shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1. The movement of groundwater through the alluvial aquifer of the Punjab has been described by Green-man and others.' In most of the area, the pre-irriga-tion water table sloped from the rivers downstream and toward the central axes of the doabs, indicating that the rivers were sources of groundwater recharge. By the term mechanical mining is meant that operation, or series of operations, that replace the hand methods of mining. The first undercutting machine to operate in anthracite was placed in the Butler mine of the Hillside Coal and Iron Co., Dec. 23, 1910, by the Sullivan Machinery Co. The first Jackhamer used in the anthracite field was installed at the Wadesville colliery of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal and Iron Co. in Oct., 1912, by the Ingersoll-Rand Co. The first longwall conveyor was installed at the Dodge mines of the Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western Coal Co. in March, 1912. The first mechanical scraper equipment was installed in the Seneca mines of the Lehigh Valley Coal Co. in January, 1914. The varying physical character and large extent of the Broken Hill lode necessarily involve the employment of a variety of underground methods. The lode had its origin in an extensive fault plane traversing metamorphosed schists conformably, as a rule, with their beds of stratification. The underground waters carrying minerals in solution deposited their contents. in the original cavities formed by the faulting action, and in the enlargements of these cavities due to dynamic forces brought to bear on the rocks, more especially on the hanging-wall side of the fault, This deposition was supplemented by metasomatic replacement of a portion of the original rock contents by the argentiferous sulphides of lead and zinc which form the staple products of the district. Although the orebody is practically continuous throughout the mines, its width varies greatly, ranging from a few feet to about 350 ft. The widest portions occur in conjunction with huge folds in the inclosing country rock, almost exclusively on the hanging-wall side. The ore it these folds pitches to the south in the southern half of the field, and to the north in the northern half; there are, however, undulations in these ore channels evidently due to compression of the rocks in the direction of the channels. In the earlier days, before the orebodies had been opened up: vertical cross-sections across these bulges in the hanging wall gave the lode the appearance of the "saddle formation," so well exemplified at Bendigo in Victoria; but subsequent development of the ore channels ha; long since proved that the formations in the two districts are entirely different. The depth reached by the zone of complete oxidation of the sulphide, varies from about 250 to 550 ft. from the original outcrop while partial oxidation extends in places below the 1,000-ft. level. The result of oxidizing influences has been the production of ore of every grade of cohesiveness, from that of dry sand to that of hard compact rock.

Observation of the clinkering action of coal from the Castle Gate D seam in underfeed stokers over a period of years has given rise to the present investigation of the effect of bony coal on clinkering. Some very costly examples of slagging clinkers in particular cases have been of especial interest to the authors. In such cases coal analyses and ash-softening and fluid temperatures have been found of little value. In general, it was noted that slagging mas accompanied by a somewhat higher ash content of the stoker slack, and the suspicion naturally arose that foreign matter was the troublemaker. One would naturally suspect bony coal and rock impurities because of their occurrence and prevalence within the seam and the relative absence of sulphur or other impurities in the coal mined. The test results given herein indicate that the concentration of the bony coal and rock impurities in the coal determines the clinkering tendencies of the ash during combustion. Castle Gate D Seam Extending from the Utah-Colorado line near Grand Junction, Colo., westward to Greenriver, Utah, and thence in semicircular form north and westward to Castle Gate, and from there southward to Mt. Hilgard in central Utah, is a line of nearly perpendicular cliffs, composed of interbedded massive sandstone and shales, making up the coal-bearing horizon of the Mesaverde formation of Upper Cretaceous age. The cliffs face roughly concentrically toward the south and southeast and the strata, with conformably enclosed coal beds, gently dip away from the face of the cliffs and at right angles to their front line. Back of these cliffs the mountain masses rise to an altitude of from 8000 to 10,ooo ft. above sea level. Stretching away from their foot is a great shale plain, on which the towns are situated and over which the railroad lines and highways run. The Castle Gate mines enter the coal beds at their outcrop; the workings extending within a particular coal bed away from the outcrop and under the mountain mass back from the cliff line (Fig. I). Throughout the Mesaverde formation in the Castle Gate general area, there are from two to five workable coal beds. Usually not all of these are coincidentally of workable size and merchantable quality throughout any given large tract. In the Castle Gate mine area, the base of the Mesaverde horizon and coal measures is marked by a massive, cliffmaking, gray sandstone bed 60 to 80 ft. thick. Locally this is referred to as the "Castle Gate sandstone floor." Frank R. Clark, in U. S. Geol. Survey Bull. 793, designates it as the "Aberdeen sandstone." At Castle Gate the various coal beds are designated by the letters A, B, C, etc., commencing with the lowest bed.
