INTRODUCTION A computer study of excavation support loads in tunnels and other excavations in discontinuous rock masses was undertaken with the distinct element method introduced by Cundall (1971). In the distinct element method the rock mass is modeled as a composition of individual blocks of rock defined by the joint planes. Normal and shear deformation laws are ascribed to the joint surfaces; the blocks of rock themselves are considered to be rigid. The particular version of the program utilized in this study ran a mini computer and used inter, active techniques for the input of geometrical data such as joint orientation and spacing and subsequent display of rock mass deformation and other data. Two major aspects of the behavior of excavations in jointed rock masses are examined in this paper: i) the behavior of unsupported excavations in rock masses with varying joint configuration, joint properties and in situ stress fields; and ii) the modification of the behavior of similar excavations when support is provided. In the latter case the excavation behavior was examined through the use of ground reaction curves. THE DISTINCT ELEMENT METHOD The Distinct Element method introduced by Cundall (1971) is a computer based analysis that simulates the behavior of a system of discrete, semi-rigid rock blocks. Block interactions are governed by realistic friction and stiffness laws; each block may undergo unlimited displacement and rotation while progressive failure is modeled.

The temperatures of solid-liquid interfaces have been measured during the growth of Sn-Pb alloy crystals which exhibited a cellulur substructure. A simple descriptive theory was used in combination with this data and the other measurable growth variables to predict some features of the solute segregation such as the intercell excess concentration and the depth of cell grooves during freezing. The effective distribution coefficient at the tip of a cell, a, was predicted and experimentally found to vary in the range, 1 >a > k0. At the lower limit, the severe segregation that must arise between dendritic cells was substantiated by various observations such as the existence of a second Phase even for alloys of only 0.2 wt pct Pb. ThE cellular morphology of a solid-liquid interface is known to coincide with the formation of a zone of constitutional supercooling ahead of the interface during growth.' The occurrence of various cell structures, (two-dimensional cells, regular cells, dendritic cells), has been quantitatively investigated,'2,4 but the segregation of solute which arises as a consequence of this mode of growth has only been examined qualitatively. AT THE request of a committee of the Engineering Division,1 National Research Council, a study of the properties of boiler plate at various temperatures up to about 900° F. (482° C.) has been instigated. The following is a report of preliminary tests made on two grades of ½ -in. plate and includes a description of the apparatus used in the determination of the proportional limit. Detailed reference to the many published investigations in connection with the properties of steel at various temperatures will be omitted from this report. Suffice to state that results obtained for variation in tensile strength elongation, and reduction in area with temperature are in substantial agreement with the effects now generally considered to be correct. Comparison of proportional limit values with results obtained by other investigators will be found in the conclusions.

THE cost of hoisting with electricity in deep mines is a matter about which little information has been published. This paper makes a detailed study of such costs and presents the information in a series of curves. In particular the curves show the cost of hoisting ore from depths varying from 500 to 7000 ft. vertical with the shaft at 70º incline for the double cylindroconical and double cylindrical drums, the hoists operating balanced, using Ward Leonard and Ilgner-Ward Leonard control, and designed for most economical operation from each depth. Operation with the double cylindrical drum is expanded to cover hoisting from 2000 to 5000 ft. using equipment designed for 5000 ft. and from 4000 to 7000 ft. using equipment designed for 7000 ft. Additional curves are included to show the ratings of the necessary hoist motors, energy input per hoisting cycle and size of flywheel in tons for complete equalization when the Ilgner-Ward Leonard system is used, also hoisting efficiency. The duty imposed on a mine-hoist motor fluctuates between wide limits during a cycle of operation. The demand on the motor may vary from a large horsepower value near the beginning of the cycle to a small or a negative demand near the end of the cycle. Such factors as tonnage to be raised per hour, depth of shaft, and balanced or unbalanced operation have such a marked effect on the operating cycle and vary to such an extent for different mines that no set of rules can be formulated for quickly determining the size of the motor required. The duty cycle from which the motor rating is derived must be determined for each case according to the conditions of the proposed hoisting operations. The motor torque required at the cardinal points of the duty cycle is determined from the moment or torque in pound-feet necessary to raise and lower the load and ropes, accelerate and retard the load, ropes, drum, etc. The torque diagram depends largely upon the type of drum. Two different types of drums, if used on exactly the same duty cycles, may have widely different peak demands and capacities of hoist motors. This paper comprises suggestions on certain points rather than a complete survey of the whole subject. In other words, it is a contribution to the kenera1 discussion invited by John Hays Hammond in his paper, presented as a Presidential address at the Chattanooga meeting of the Institute, in October, 1908.1 Mr. Hammond says, in conclusion: "... I am not offering a code, or even an official and representative declaration of principles.. My remarks are intended, and will, I hope, be accepted, simply as a contribution to that discussion of their theme in which every engineer of experience may participate." THE validity and accuracy of velocity measurements underground have been questioned repeatedly by those in mine ventilation work. The general disagreement on the subject is well illustrated in an AIME publication.' Although the presence of errors is readily admitted, their magnitudes are not known and often are described by practical operators merely as "great," "small," or "of no importance." The belief that errors are of academic interest only prevails because of a justifiable claim that actual volumes of air circulated are well in excess of those required by law and safe mining practices. Poor understanding of the source and nature of errors inherent in velocity measurements, coupled with questionable determination of cross-sectional area, result in faulty techniques for the purpose of expediting ventilation surveys and render doubtful the calculated volume. Often consistency of readings is confused with accuracy. A succession of check readings showing a maximum deviation of 5 pct in the measured value of velocity usually signifies nothing more than diligent application of technique in a stable ventilating current. This article discusses the errors involved in air measurements underground. Where instrument errors are presented, the treatment is confined solely to the rotating-vane anemometer, recognized as a most useful ventilation measurement tool because of its simple design and easy operation. In the following pages a positive deviation is defined as one which has to be added to the registered air velocity to obtain the true air velocity.

The hydrometallurgical application of thiourea in processing precious metal ores and concentrates has reached the development stage. This paper reviews recent technical literature covering the process development of thiourea leaching. In addition, recent fundamental contributions are discussed. Most of the interest in thiourea leaching has involved treating high grade concentrates that have sufficient value to just the use of thiourea as a reagent. An important development in thiourea technology is the addition of SO2 to the leaching solution. This procedure effectively reduces the decomposition of thiourea and eliminates the problems of passive surface layers that limit the leaching efficiency. Results for the thiourea leaching of a bulk sulfide concentrate and a residue from the autoclave leaching of a smelter flue dust are also reported. As determined by a standard bottle roll cyanidation test, the bulk concentrate was extremely resistive to cyanide leaching yielding only 16% gold and 2% silver extraction in 24 hours. Leaching with a relatively concentrated thiourea solution (1MCS (NH2)2) resulted in 83% gold and 75% silver extraction in four hours. With the treated flue dust residue, gold extraction was about 60%. Gold and silver extraction with cyanide was sensitive to both cyanide concentration and oxidizing conditions. Cyanidation resulted in 59% gold extraction and 77% silver extraction in 24 hours.

THE methods of handling the oil output of the mid-continent fields are not unlike those practised in other oil fields of the United States, and it is not expected that this paper will present any entirely novel ideas. Some features of the practice of handling this oil may be of interest, however. WOODEN CAGING TANKS Practically all of the oil sold to pipe lines and other purchasing agencies throughout the Mid-continent field is gaged from wooden tanks. Steel gaging tanks are slowly coming into use, and are preferable in many ways-leakage and evaporation are reduced, and the strapping and recalculation of capacities are unnecessary. The wooden tanks are slightly coned to facilitate tightening the hoops. The-sizes in, common use are 250, 500, 800 and 1600 bbl. The number and the capacity of the gaging tanks upon any producing oil property depend upon its production, and the facilities for disposing of the output. The 1600-bbl. size was the most common in the Cushing field, particularly during the period of flush production. The tanks are distributed over the leased premises in groups of two, three, and four tanks each, and these are filled from flow tanks, or through direct pipe connections with the heads of the wells. Flow tanks are merely temporary reservoirs to facilitate the transfer of oil from the wells to the gaging tanks. They diminish fire risk,, and are considered indispensable on small producing properties where .water is pumped with the oil, as they permit the refuse and water to settle out before the production is run to the gaging tanks.

SINCE the first applications of cyanidation to silver ores about 1906, treatment of ores in the Pachuca district has been entirely by straight cyanidation. Until about the year 1921, Real del Monte removed a sulphide concentrate (largely pyrite) by tabling in the cyanidation grinding circuit. The ores milled prior to the year 1935 were dry ores, ideal for cyanidation, and yielded 90 pct of the silver and 92 pct of the gold. Since 1934 there has been a notable increase in the refractivity to cyanidation of the average ores received by the mill. Tonnages of the former amenable ores have gradually been replaced by tonnages of more refractory ones, so that present average recoveries have fallen to 83 pct of the silver and 90 pct of the gold. During this period there has also been an increase in the content of base metal sulphides' in many of the ores although this increase is not always directly related to the increased refractivity. Since March 1950, the Cia. de Real del Monte has been developing a flotation treatment for some-of its ores before cyanidation. Suitability for flotation is judged not only by the base metal content, but also by the amount of additional recovery of silver and gold made possible by the combined treatment. Selection and segregation of ores most suitable for flotation before cyanidation is a difficult problem for the mines, and the best that can be done is a compromise that leaves much to be desired. Development of Pre-cyanidation Flotation at Real del Monte Much laboratory work has been done on flotation of ores from the Pachuca district, however, the data could not supply reliable information on the many factors connected with the economics of low-base metal-high silver ores. Pilot plant operations would be required. Pilot plant facilities were made available in March 1950, when it became necessary to close down Loreto's 100 ton per day selective flotation plant because of exhausted ore supply. The results of the 100-ton pilot plant tests indicated that a large part of our tonnage of cyanidation ores could be profitably treated by flotation, and a tonnage of 1100 tons per day was selected as the maximum tonnage of ore that the mines were likely to deliver, and because this tonnage fitted with the grinding capacity of this circuit. Equipment was ordered for the production of a single flotation concentrate. The conception of flotation before cyanidation, at that time, was the production of a single concentrate to be shipped to the lead smelter. The 100-ton pilot plant was immediately increased to 350 tons by installing additional flotation cells.. This. plant was operated continuously until the 1100ton plant was put in operation in January 1951. In July 1950, an increase in the quotation for zinc called for an investigation- of the possibilities of producing a zinc concentrate, and laboratory tests on the tailings from the 350-ton plant indicated that a

Equilibrium studies on the extraction of nickel and cobalt with kerosine solutions of naphthenic acid have shown that an exchange extraction reaction occurs at pH 5.5. The nickel/cobalt separation factor is constant at 1.8 for constant total metal molarity and varying nickel/cobalt ratios. The separation factor decreases with increasing total metal molarity in the organic phase beyond 0.2 M and also decreases with increasing temperature. From the equilibrium data, it has been possible to derive a mathematical model for the separation of nickel from cobalt by exchange extraction in multistage systems. Experimental data from a continuously operated multistage mixer/settler apparatus has shown a reasonable correspondence with computer-calculated data. The effective separation of nickel and cobalt in sulfate solution remains a problem in hydrometallurgy and the hope that this would be solved by solvent extraction has not yet been fulfilled. With chloride solutions, advantage may be taken of the ability of cobalt to form anionic complexes with the chloride ion. It can then be readily separated from nickel, which does not form stable chloro complexes, by extraction with a suitable long chain amine. However, in hydro metallurgical operations, sulfate solutions are generally obtained in which no extractable anionic species are present. Thus, the possibility of using cationic extractants must be considered, and in this paper attention is directed to the use of carboxylic acids. The method of separation studied has been termed exchange extraction, which involves replacement of a metal in the organic phase with a more acidic metal in the aqueous phase. Thus, (BR2).+ (Az+)aqt=(AR,).+ (B2+)aq (I) where metal A is more acidic than metal B, R represents the acidic radical derived from the acid RH, and the subscripts e and aq refer to the organic and aqueous phases, respectively. Ashbrook and Ritcey' have used this method for the separation of cobalt from nickel using the sodium salt of di-2 ethyl hexyl phosphoric acid, which preferentially extracts cobalt. Some nickel is coextracted, and this is removed by exchange with cobalt ions in the feed solution by suitable countercurrent operation in a pulsed column. Much work has been carried out by a number of workers in Russia on the general use of exchange extraction for the separation of metal ions using car-boxylic acids. Gindin et aL a have demonstrated that this technique could be applied to the separation of nickel from cobalt using a C--C. carboxylic acid and have applied the technique to the production of high purity cobalt solutions for electrolysis. Further worka was concerned with the development of a process for the separation of nickel from cobalt in a pulsed column. This system permitted the separation of iron and copper from nickel and cobalt in one system. The procedure involved center feeding with acid backwashing at the top and alkali addition lower down the column. Thus the system operated under a pH gradient and the metals were distributed in the column in the order of their basicities. A similar application was studied by Gel'perin et al,4,5 for the removal of copper and iron impurities from a nickel anolyte by means of a C10-C,12 fatty acid fraction. Ginden et al,' and Fletcher and Wilson' have studied the effect of pH on the extraction of a number of metals with carboxylic acids. These studies showed that metals such as iron, copper, lead, zinc, nickel cobalt, and manganese are extracted at pH values close to the pH of hydroxide precipitation. Nickel is extracted at a slightly lower pH than cobalt and thus the nickel/cobalt separation factor has a value not much greater than 1. More basic work on complex identification has been reported by Fletcher and Flett: by Tanaka; and Jay-cock and Jones." These studies have suggested that at low loadings in the organic phase, the nickel and cobalt carboxylates appear to be dimeric and solvated by free carboxylic acid molecules. As the concentration of metal in the organic phase increases, the complex changes and larger polymeric species are formed. A SURVEY of the status of ore dressing in 19231 placed particular stress on the need of research in the crushing and grinding of ore, especially on the need for a method of measuring the surface of the products obtained in crushing and grinding, and for fundamental data on the law of crushing, in order that intelligent conclusions may be drawn from actual crushing or grinding experiments. There has been no satisfactory means of determining the surface of crushed products. The results have been judged entirely by the amount of the various sizes produced, based on sieve sizing for particles above 74 microns in size and on microscopic measurement or elutriation for particles below 74 microns, a method which could give only a general idea of what had been accomplished. The fact that the long controversy between the followers of Kick and of Rittinger has resulted in no accepted conclusion is evidence of the need for fundamental data on the crushing law.

Identified and utilized Arizona salt deposits are of two ages: 1) Permian in the Colorado Plateau, and 2) Tertiary in the Basin and Range country. Uses include: a) storage of energy fluids in man-made solution cavities in both Permian (Supai Formation) and Tertiary (Luke salt body) salt and b) production of marketable products by solution and evaporation of tertiary salt. The two liquid petroleum storage Projects have a combined storage capacity in excess of 380 million L (100 million gal). Current production of salt products approximates 32 kt/a (32,000 stpy). Increasing demand for both storage and salt products is anticipated.

Tround International Inc. is currently developing a hard rock drill that uses a salvo of three frangible projectiles to prefracture the rock ahead of a conventional tri-cone bit. This paper reports on a series of experiments conducted for Tround to study the fragmentation enhancement possible through the use of an optimally timed and spaced salvo of projectiles. In this study the complex three-dimensional problem was simplified to a two dimensional salvo impact problem in a transparent brittle plate of glass. The use of high speed photography and dynamic photoelasticity was then used to study the development of the impact damage zone and the various interactions of the stress waves.

The purpose of this paper is to present in a convenient form data and examples necessary in making dynamometer card analyses; also to outline a procedure of well weighing. Many articles and papers have been written delving into the mathematical considerations relative to the shape and characteristics of dynamometer cards. However. it is recognized that there are too many unknown factors involved in such calculations to assure a workable degree of accuracy. For this reason the accepted procedure is to take dynamometer cards on wells in question rather than try to calculate the load curve. The polished rod dynamometer is now recognized as a necessary tool for measuring loads, torque, and horsepower. It is also used to determine pump action and trouble-shoot for any seemingly abnormal pumping condition. The apparently infinite variety of a = maximum load (height x scale constant) b = minimum load. FIG. 1 dynamometer cards that can be obtained is one reason for the general lack of usage of the dynamometer as a control instrument rather than a means for making routine measurements of leads and horsepower. When it is considered that the dynamometer card is a record of the resultant of all forces acting on the polished rod at any particular instant during the pumping stroke. the problem is then one of breaking down this resultant into its various components. As a means of a quick review we shall consider the examples shown in Figs. 1 to 9: and Tables I and II and then proceed to the interpretation of variously shaped cards caused by some abnormal operating condition. In Table 11, when we were considering the factors involved in calculating the peak polished rod load, it can be seen that the factors involved greatly oversimplify the problem. Certain assumptions are made which may or may not he even close to the actual field conditions, such as the specific gravity of the fluid generally considered as one; that the crank has constant angular velocity; that the down-hole friction is zero; and that the fluid lift is from the pump. In the following examples we shall see what a variation in fluid weight and friction can do to the general shape and magnitude of the dynamometer card. (Figs. 10 to 22.) MAKING THE WELL STUDY It is obvious that it would be impractical to consider in detail all of these factors each time a well study is made, inasmuch as each well study job could conceivably be extended into a research project rather than serve the practical requirements of finding the answer to a specific problem. For this reason it is important that some objective be established previous to the time the well study is made.
