Silicon carbide (Sic), produced by heating rice hulls to elevated temperatures, contains a mixture of beta crystalline silicon carbide whiskers, particles, and unreacted carbon. The silicon carbide whiskers are 0.5 micron in diameter and 50 to 100 microns in length and have been found useful for reinforcing metal and other composite materials. The carbon can be removed by combustion, but this makes separation of the silicon carbide whiskers from particles difficult and a high grade whisker product cannot be made. However, a clean, high grade SiC whisker product can be obtained from the pre-burned converted rice hulls using physical separation processes that are based on differential wetting. Recovery of Sic whiskers from the pre-burned material was found to exceed 90%. A modification of the froth flotation process developed during this study is now being used commercially to separate silicon carbide whiskers and particles and to recover a high grade whisker product.

JOSEPH P. HODGSON.-As to ".Safety First," I did not deal with that, but I will say that in 1913, the number of .men killed was nine, and that year the "safety first" program was commenced; the next year, 1914, the number was reduced to five. In 1915, I am pleased to say that the number was reduced to two in the Copper Queen's entire property, and we have none so far this year. THE CHAIRMAN (G. F. G. HERMAN, Bisbee, Ariz.).-I can say, further, that we have from eight to nineteen men per month incapacitated for more than 14 days. Those are classified in this State as serious accidents. The number of men injured has apparently increased, -but that is clue to our improved method of recording and classifying accidents, no matter how slight. C. W. IT is possible to construct a simple diagram of the earnings, or the production, of the men employed at a coal mine that will show not only if the conditions tend toward contentment among the men, but if the operating distribution of the work is correct. As earnings are the greatest cause of discontent, even exceeding all the other causes, if contentment exists in the matter of earnings, the likelihood of other discontents flaring up is greatly lessened. The basis of such a diagram would be the Gaussian curve of the normal variation in human ability. Such a curve has long been recog-nized. H. L. Moore,1 in discussing the quantitative relation between wages and ability says: "It has been pointed out that industrial efficiency is dependent upon physical, mental, and moral qualities, and these qualities . . . there is good reason for regarding as being distributed according to the Gaussian law..

Electrical Conductivity. - The subject of the relative conducting power of different minerals is one of minor interest.* In general most minerals, except those having a metallic luster among the sulphides and oxides, are non-conductors. Only the non-conductors can show pyro-electrical phenomena, and only the conductors can give a thermo-electric current. 437. Frictional Electricity. - The development of an electrical charge on many bodies by friction is a familiar subject. All minerals become electric by friction, although the degree to which this is manifested differs widely. There is no line of distinction among minerals, dividing them into positively electric and negatively electric; for both electrical states may be presented by different varieties of the same species, and by the same variety in different states. The gems are in general positively electric only when polished; the diamond, however, exhibits positive electricity whether polished or not. IT is difficult to give a refining outline that may be followed for any and all combinations of the platinum metals; different combinations require different methods of attack. This paper does not pretend to go into all of the reactions of the metals of the platinum group, but will outline the commercial refining of platinum scrap. TYPICAL PLATINUM SCRAP As a concrete case, let us take 100 oz. of miscellaneous scrap, made up of jewelry scrap, dental scrap and laboratory ware. This lot will contain some platinum, palladium, iridium, ruthenium, rhodium, gold, silver and copper. The first problem is to get all of the metals in solution. If the scrap is principally platinum, palladium and gold, a treatment with aqua regia is the course to pursue; but if the scrap contains alloys high in iridium or ruthenium, aqua regia will act too slowly. In the case in hand, we are going to presume that we have scrap high in iridium and ruthenium, and proceed accordingly.

A tunnel boring machine has potential use in al- most any type of mining where the access shaft (or adit) is large enough or can be made large enough for its initial entry and where the orebody is of sufficient size to warrant its use. Some time will inevitably be lost in negotiating curves or making lateral moves and moving from level to level. Nevertheless, if the orebody is sufficiently large, advance scheduling can minimize the lost time encountered in such moves. Ideally, a mine will be planned for the use of these machines, thus eliminating access and transport problems. From the viewpoint of time involved, the rate of advance by boring as compared to conventional means is worthy of review. For instance, the Blanco Tunnel, one section of the Bureau of Reclamation's San Juan-Chama Project in southern Colorado, was bored in competent sedimentary rock with the following performance:

The Elliot Lake uranium deposits are contained in a pebble conglomerate which is similar throughout the basin. This paper compares the solid-liquid separation circuits of two nominal 3000 T/d acid leach uranium concentrates treating Elliot Lake ore. One concentrator employed rotary vacuum drum filtration for solids removal and washing, the .other used counter current decantation in torque arm thickeners. Capital and operating costs, operation and maintenance, and metallurgical performance of the two solution recovery methods are compared and contrasted. A recent development, removal of the sand fraction ahead of C.C.D. and separate sand washing in hydraulic cyclones, is also discussed.

SEARCH for a consistent theory to explain the relationship between energy input and size reduction in a comminution process has accumulated, over the years, an enormous amount of plant and laboratory data. Although some correlation of these data has been possible for purposes of engineering design and for the advancement of research in fracture, there is still great need of a means of predicting behaviour of a solid when it is reduced in size by mechanical forces. The best known hypotheses proposed to describe the energy-size reduction relationships in crushing and grinding stem from a common origin. The present article analyzes problems of comminution in the light of the precepts of this origin. Its object is to reconcile points of difference between these well known hypotheses and to present relationships more widely applicable to comminution studies.

THIS paper deals with the results of a study of the application and development of mining machines for cutting out and removing dirt bands in bituminous coal beds. FACE PREPARATION When one or more dirt bands1 occur in a seam of coal, the problem of elimination of impurities becomes manifest. The degree of complete-ness to which these impurities are removed at the face has an important bearing upon labor costs, haulage costs and outside cleaning costs, and often the ash content of the product is markedly affected. Yet, because the present-day miner is paid for the number of tons he loads he often lacks interest in the quality of the coal. To insure a clean product, a system of penalties for dirty coal is enforced, but control of extraneous impurity content in the loaded coal is often inadequate and ineffectual when coal and banded impurity are shot as one. It seems only logical that to reduce the amount of impurities by proper face preparation before the men are permitted to load the coal is the most efficient method of preparation.

An insight into the mechanism of electrocrystallization of copper in simulated commercial acid electrolytes has been surmised from scanning electron microscope analysis of laboratory prepared specimens. The growth takes place in three overlapping stages. In he first, lasting approximately one hour at 200 amps/sq m, a propensity to epitaxial growth is observed. During the second stage a preferred orientation developed. The crystallography of the deposit showed a strong preferred orientation with the [111] direction normal to the surface. Triangular pyramids with (111) faces and (111) texture is a common result. In the third stage, occuring at longer deposition times, side growth, dendrite-like branching is common. The obsermtions have some elements in common with published results for highly purified electrolytes. Several significant differences were observed. The truncated pyramidal and block type growth discussed in he literature is suppressed under the conditions studied. The results are briefly discussed in terms of the screw dislocation, fault, and layer type growth mechanisms of crystal growth.

The economics of fuel oil must be considered in two aspects; viz., fuel oil as one of a number of competitive fuels and fuel oil as a refined product of petroleum. "Fuel oil" is usually defined as that product of petroleum which is used in furnaces for the generation of heat by simple combustion. It is true that any product of petroleum used in an internal combustion engine is essentially a fuel oil, but such oils are not included in the class known as "fuel oil." Fuel Oil as One of Several Fuels For a number of years, the petroleum industry has believed that the petroleum reserves were very limited and that petroleum products would begin to become scarce within a few years. The industry has believed that there would be a gradual but continual rise in prices as a result of this impending scarcity. Some 30,000 people attended from 50 countries. Over 600 exhibitors brought with them a billion dollars of mining technology, ranging from tiny high-precision valves to giant off-highway trucks. Twenty-seven technical sessions with more than 100 papers covered the gamut of mining advancements. It was a grand display of industry vitality just to power the huge exhibit area required 22,000 kW of electricity each day, and support services for the exposition created more than 1000 daily jobs for local labor. Unquestionably, Las Vagas knew the miners were in town for the American Mining Congress' International Mlining Show.

J., and whether there are. any traces of zinc in these Brazilian-deposits. J. T. For the last five years the furnace-men drawing their oresupply from the Lake Superior districts have had to solve the problem of using the very fine Mesabi ores as part of their oremixture. It is not my purpope to dwell on the early experiences and the progressive development in the use of these ores up to this time, but to lay before the members of the Institute one prominent feature concerning them, namely, the frequent and sometimes very disastrous slips (?) or explosions (?) occurring at furnaces where these ores are used. The Transactions of the Institute contain very little on this subject. Mr. F. E. Bachman, in his discussion of Mr. 0. 0. Laudig's paper (Trans., xxvi., 1061), advances a theory as to the cause of these occurrences; but this is the only reference to the subject in the Transactions up to this time, so far as I can recall. THE use of a pneumatic process for removing fine material (usually less than 48-mesh) is increasing in, the preparation of stoker-size coal. The fine material, produced as a byproduct, is known as dedusting-plant dust. Since fusain is the most friable ingredient in bituminous coal (it may readily be rubbed to an impalpable powder with the fingers), it tends to accumulate in this byproduct. While studying the properties of cokes produced by blending Illinois coals with other materials, considerable quantities of fusain were required. Dedusting-plant dust suggested itself as a-convenient supply. It became necessary, therefore, to determine how much fusain was contained in a measured sample of dust, how the fusain was distributed with respect to size and specific gravity in the sample, and whether or not it would be feasible or desirable further to concentrate or to recover the fusain from, the dust before using it in the blends to be coked. The results obtained indicate the possibilities of production of a high-fusain material.

On February 1, 1971, United States Steel Corporation, Lorain Works began operation of its first BOP facility equipped with a partial combustion gas cleaning system.- This shop consists of two 220 ton vessels. Figure I schematically describes this partial combustion gas cleaning system and highlights the necessary features for it-s safe and efficient operation. Waste gases are drawn into the membrane hood by a 2250 H.P. induced draft fan and are first quenched by the six inch bull nozzle at the top of the hood. Larger solid particles are separated from the gas in the quencher venturi and final scrubbing takes place in the P-A high energy venturi scrubber before the cleaned waste gas is burned in the flare stack. Scrubbing water is routed through a cyclone separator and then cycled into one of two 100' diameter thickeners. Underflow sludge which averages 20% solids is dewatered by 100 H.P. centrifuges. The clear overflow from the thickeners is recycled first to the P-A venturi and then to the quencher before returning to the thickeners.

An extensive research program has been carried out at PCS Mining for some time into the use of high frequency microseismic emissions in the range of 30-200 kHz for roof fall warning in the mines. A laboratory investigation on loaded samples of potash has established a close correlation between acoustic emissions and the applied load. The tests also indicated the occurrence of the Kaiser effect. The positive and encouraging response from underground testing and controlled laboratory testing has lead to the extension of the investigation into correlation of the high frequency microseismic emissions and the change in stress distribution due to mining. Hydraulic borehole pressure cells were installed at different depths ahead of the advancing boring machine. The output due to the stress change and the microseismic event count was monitored by a continuous chart recorder. This paper discusses the results of this instrumentation. The results confirm the strong correlation between the two measured parameters and outlines future areas of research for the use of the high frequency microseismic emission techniques in quantifying the changes in stress distribution.
