Is this impact method a better index of the true resistance to grinding under actual field conditions than other methods the author has reported in the TRANSACTIONS? F. C. BOND (author's reply).-The impact crushing device was designed to measure relative resistance to crushing, or what may be called the crushability, and is not used for comparing the resistance to grinding, or grindability. The correlation between crushability and grindability of different materials is not at all close, since fractures, zones of weakness, and structural features of rock have a much greater effect upon the crushability than upon the grindability. We still depend upon our standard grindability tests for measuring resistance to grinding, and use the impact crushing tests only in relation to crusher installations. The impact crushing device has several advantages over the measurement of crushing strength in pounds per square inch as an index of crushing resistance.

Formation and slow solidification of a molten zone in a homogeneous ingot produces a discontinuity in solute concentration at the boundary of the zone and a gradient of concentration within the zone. By using two solutes, one a donor, the other an acceptor, step or graded pn barriers can be produced. EXPLOITATION of the difference in concentration between a molten solution and the solid which freezes from it is continued in this paper. The normal segregation which results from this difference has been used for purification'.'2 and for pn barrier-formation in semiconductors."4 By means of traveling molten zones this difference has been used to effect multistage separations and to eliminate segregation in ingots." a It will be shown here that by means of stationary molten zones this difference can be used to produce discontinuities in concentration. In particular it will be shown that a pn or npn barrier can be made by the simple act of melting and refreezing a portion of a block of semiconductor, provided that the block contains proper concentrations of a donor and an acceptor in solid solution. Assumptions The operation of melting and slow refreezing will be called remelting and the interface between liquid and solid at the start of refreezing will be called the remelt bormdary. While remelting may be done for various shapes of starting crystal and remelt zone it will be assumed that the remelt zone is cylindrical, its length being measured in the direction of freezing, which is normal to the remelt boundary, and

The fatigue strength, fatigue hardening, and effect of fatigue deformation on subsequent age hardening of supersaturated Al(Cu) solid solutions have been determined as functions of alloy composition and temperature. The fatigue strength/tensile strength ratios, determined at 150°, 25°, and -195°C, decreased with increase in alloy content for all temperatures, but the F.S./U.T.S. ratios at -195°C decreased much more rapidly than did the ratios for 150" and 25°C. This suggested that strain aging and/or age hardening occurred during tests at higher temperatures. Additionally, the F.S./U.T.S. ratios at 150°C exceeded those at 25°C for all compositions, indicating greater strengthening during fatigue at 150°C. The effect of fatigue or tensile deformation at 150°, 25°, and -195°C on subsequent age hardening showed that the deformatzon increased the rate of precipitation and indicated that mechanically produced vacancies were probably formed during deformation. Fatigue hardening was studied at 150°, 25°, and -195°C, and the effect of room-temperature rests after 10 and 100 cycles was examined. The results confirmed that strain aging occurred at the higher temperatures . DURING the last 15 years various mechanisms of fatigue crack nucleation and growth based on dislocation and vacancy interactions, operating singly or collectively, have been proposed. The probable consensus of present opinion is that the fatigue process in pure metals essentially involves dislocation interactions, and that vacancies formed by such interactions play a minor or inconsequential role. However, there is some evidence that age-hardened alloys tend to overage during fatigue, probably by local vacancy-enhanced diffusion, and strain aging also might be important in selected cases. Furthermore, it has been established that the behavior of quenched-in vacancies in Al(Cu) and other solid solutions is composition-sensitive. Therefore, it seemed worthwhile to investigate various aspects of the fatigue behavior of supersaturated Al(Cu) alloys and to examine the results in terms of vacancy-enhanced effects. EXPERIMENTAL The alloys used in this investigation were prepared from 99.994 wt pet A1 and OFHC copper, the latter containing 0.04 pet 0 as the principal impurity. Six alloys were made, containing, by actual analysis, 0.58, 0.96, 1.96, 2.85, 4.45, and 5.51 wt pet Cu. They were induction-melted in air in graphite crucibles, cast as 7-in. by 7/8-in.-diam rods in graphite molds, and hot-rolled to 5/8 in. diam. The experimental work was a three-part program involving the determination of a) 10' cycle fatigue stresses as a function of alloy composition and temperature; b) the effect of fatigue deformation on subsequent aging of the supersaturated alloys; and c) fatigue hardening as a function of alloy composition and temperature. For determining the 105 cycle fatigue stresses, a portion of the 5/8-in. stock was machined into Krouse rotating cantilever beam fatigue specimens, 2 in. in length by 1/4 in. minimum diameter. These were tested at +150°, 25°, and -195°C (liquid nitrogen) on a Krouse high-speed machine, with special weights to provide lower -than-normal loading ranges, this being necessitated by the small load requirements of those alloys of lower copper content. For the high-temperature tests a small resistance heater was designed to clear the collets and fit in between the chucks, while for the low-temperature tests a hollow nylon cylinder was used, having closed ends drilled to pass a fatigue specimen, and positioned similarly to the heater. A plexiglass container completely enclosed the fatigue machine; rubber gloves fixed to ports in the walls enabled the machine to be operated from outside the box. A tray of magnesium perchlorate dried the air in the container and prevented both atmospheric corrosion fatigue at room and elevated temperatures and troublesome ice build-up at low temperatures. A total of ten to fifteen specimens was used for each combination of alloy composition and temperature. The result of each test was plotted on a standard S-N diagram, and the next stress was selected on the basis of the trends indicated by previous specimens. In this manner a small portion of the S-N diagram was constructed, and the 105 cycle fatigue stress obtained. THE first paper which appears in the published Transactions of our Institute is that read by our respected Secretary at its first meeting in Wilkes-Barre, in May, 1871. It is entitled The Geological Distribution of Mining Districts in the United States, and presents a brief but masterly review of what was known of the distribution of our deposits of useful minerals, particularly the metals, not only from a geographical but from .a geological stand-point. At the request of Dr. Raymond, I agreed, somewhat hastily, perhaps, to write for this occasion a brief sketch of the geological distribution of the deposits of the useful metals in this country, in the light of the increased knowledge of the present day. In the time given no personal investigation was possible, and as it was therefore out of the question to attempt to make anything that could be considered an original contribution to the history of our ore-deposits, I have been obliged to limit myself to an examination of such published data within my reach as bore upon this subject, and could be consulted in the brief time I have been able to give to it. Had the geological investigations undertaken by the Tenth Census been continued systematically by the United States Geological Survey or by the Eleventh Census, it might have been possible to make a fairly-complete review of the subject. MORE than 2500 members of the AIME from all sections of the U. S., Canada, Central and South America are expected to attend the 175th General Meeting scheduled for Los Angeles Feb. 16 to 21, 1953. The Southern California Section will be host for the meeting. It will be the first time the Annual Meeting has been held in Los Angeles. In keeping with the historic nature of the event, headquarters will be the fabulous Statler Hotel, recently opened in downtown Los Angeles. Meeting plans are under the direction of Henry T. Mudd, General Chairman, assisted by members of the Southern California Section, headed by Basil P. Kantzer. The annual business meeting is scheduled to be held Tuesday, February 17, at the Statler Hotel, at 4 pm. Minerals Beneficiation Div. has planned a very important program, with 10 technical sessions, the famous Scotch Breakfast, divisional luncheon, and participation in the Mining Branch and All-Institute activities. The MBD business meeting is set for the morning of Feb. 16, 1953.

The basic objective of this paper is to present a review of the state of knowledge concerning the fundamental mechanics of rock/bit-tooth interaction under downhole conditions. Of particular concern is the contributing significance of the various variables associated with the generation of rock chips by a single penetrating bit-tooth. The variables to be considered are fluid pressures which simulate borehole conditions, the mechanical properties of the rock, the shape and angle of attack of a bit-tooth, and the rate of load application on a bit-tooth. In addition, consideration is given to multiple bit-tooth penetration insofar as the effects of distance from and geometrical shape of adjacent penetration craters are concerned. Both experimental results and idealized theoretical models for single bit-tooth penetration are presented. Finally, the applicability of plasticity theory to drilling phenomena at depth, results of recent drag-bit studies, and several general theories of roller-bit drilling are briefly discussed. FUNDAMENTALS OF ROCK/BIT-TOOTH INTERACTION Drilling efficiency at depth in terms of penetration rate depends largely upon three essentially interdependent factors: 1) the bit, insofar as the mechanical motion, shape, and configuration of the bit-teeth are concerned; 2) the rock, as regards its mechanical behavior, or response to the penetrating action of the bit-teeth, when subjected to a state of stress induced by mud column, interstitial pore, and overburden pressure (and at great depths to high temperature) ; and

A correlation is presented for predicting the viscosity of gas-saturated crude oils under reservoir conditions. It is based on the dead oil viscosity and the solution GOR. The correlation was developed from a study which showed that at a fixed solution GOR, the relation between the gas-saturated oil viscosities and the correrponding dead oil viscosities is a straight line on logarithmic coordinates. Data from 457 crude oil samples from the major producing areas of the U. S., Canada and South America were used. The best straight lines through the data were fitted by the method of least squares with a digital computer. The correlation is presented in the form of an equation and also in a convenient gra-phical form. INTRODUCTION The viscosity of gas-saturated crude oils under reservoir conditions is an important physical property used in reservoir engineering calculations. Many difficulties are inherent in the sampling of gas-saturated oils and in the laboratory measurement of their viscosities. Therefore, it is frequently neither possible nor convenient to obtain measured values, so the viscosity must be estimated from other, more readily available data. This paper presents a correlation for predicting the viscosity of gas-saturated crude oils. The correlation is based on the amount of gas in solution and the viscosity of the dead oil at the temperature of interest. A previous correlation of these variables was presented by Beal. In comparison, the correlation presented here extends to a higher GOR and to a lower dead oil viscosity. Over the range of variables covered by both, this correlation is based on approximately 11 times as many oil samples. DEVELOPMENT OF CORRELATION A study was made of the variables or parameters which could be used to relate the viscosity of a gas-saturated oil to its dead oil viscosity. Preference was given to those variables which are easily and commonly measured in the field or in the laboratory. It was found that either the differential liquid formation volume factor or the solution GOR of the gas-saturated oil could be used as a correlating parameter. The solution GOR was se- lected for the correlation because of its simplicity and availability. In an attempt to refine the correlation by introducing a second parameter, the following additional variables were tested: differential liquid formation volume factor at the reservoir bubble point, the formation volume factor at the saturation pressure for the GOR of interest, reservoir temperature, viscosity of C+ fraction at 100°F and atmospheric pressure, weighted average gravity of gas in solution, oil gravity, reservoir bubble point pressure, saturation pressure at the selected GOR and reservoir temperature, and gas mol fraction. None of these improved the correlation to any significant extent. It was found that at any fixed solution GOR, the relation between the gas-saturated oil viscosities and the corresponding dead oil viscosities is a straight line on logarithmic coordinates, for the range of variables investigated. This straight-line relationship was used for the correlation. Viscosity data on a total of 457 crude oil samples were used. The data were obtained with rolling ball-type viscometers. The samples came from all of the important producing areas of the U. S., as well as from Canada and South America. Their geographical distribution is shown in Table 1. A comparison is made between the amount of interstitial water found by analysis in cores and that estimated from the resistivity curve of the electric log for the corresponding strata of producing reservoirs. It is shown that while the determined and the estimated water saturations are in good agreement in some cases, this agreement may be due to a fortuitous compensation of errors. Estimates of water saturations made from the electric 1og by use of existing relations should, therefore, be employed with caution. Also presented are data on the variation of salinity of interstitial waters in reservoir sands, and on the effect of variation of salinity and porosity on the validity of estimates of water content made from the electric log. INTRODUCTION Throughout the history of electric logging there have been recurrent cycles of optimism and pessimism as to the value of the electric log in the quantitative estimation of reservoir fluid content. The very early days of electric logging were an optimistic period, in which there was widespread faith in the ability of the resistivity curve to reflect fluid content, and in the ability of the potential curve to indicate textural characteristics. In time the accumulation of exceptions to this idealistic behavior brought about a general disillusionment, and caused the more pessimistic of those dealing with electric logs to believe that the sole importance of the log lay in stratigraphic correlation. Within the last several years optimism as to the quantitative use of the electric log has been revived, primarily as the result of the stimulating work of C. E. Archie' on the estimation of interstitial water in sands from resistivity data. Even though the general trend of thought on the quantitative value of the electric log reflects optimism, it is inevitable that there are some widely divergent opinions of the validity of quantitative estimates based on the electric log. A valid method of estimation of fluid content by means of the electric log and a general knowledge of the textural character of the reservoir rock would be of signal importance, not only in that it would save time and money in securing information on reservoirs now being drilled, but also because it would permit the evaluation of reserves in many fields drilled without adequate core data subsequent to the advent of electric logging. Because of this importance, Humble's Production Research Division, in cooperation with various other company divisions, initiated several years ago series of tests designed to evaluate the reliability of estimates of fluid content made from the electric log. The investigation was limited at the outset to sand reservoirs, since it was felt that the inclusion of limestone reservoirs would entail needless complications. In devising these tests it was immediately apparent that the chief difficulty in evaluating the worth of any method of estimation lay in establishing the true value of fluid content. The results of direct analyses of cores cut with ordinary mud were not sufficient, because of the probability of contamination of the fluids by filtrate from the drilling mud; the results of restored state tests on cores were deemed unsuitable because these results can hardly be said to furnish a primary standard. The method adopted was the direct analysis of cores cut with an oil-base drilling fluid. Such cores, when properly handled, are believed to afford the most precise determination of water content available at the present, and, in addition, lend themselves readily to the determination of various other properties which are pertinent to the estimation of fluid content from the electric log. Since it was desired to compare the fluid contents estimated from the electric log run in ordinary mud with cores cut in the same hole, the use of oil-base fluid necessitated the changing over, after all cores were cut, to a conventional mud. The advantages of the tri-axial diagram in representing the composition of slags and silicates are well appreciated by many metallurgists. Prof. H. M. Howe* has pointed out the application of a fourth variable, in connection with the diagram, and has called attention to the usefulness of the general systern of tri-axial representation. In the discussion of Prof. Howe's paper, Mr. Firmstone† indicated how certain distances could be measured directly by projection. Prof. R. H. Thurston,‡ as early as 1877, had made use of a typtic model and of triangular diagrams, with contour-lines, rekrresenting varying physical properties corresponding to varying chemical composition. Still earlier, Prof. J. Willard Gibbs§ had used the diagram in similar work; and other scientists were thought by him to have preceded him in its use. During the period of nearly a quarter-century, following these early publications, there has been an ever-increasing use of graphic methods in numerous branches of scientific work, stimulated, in part, by the possibility of representation by three co-ordinates upon plane-surfaces. Yet the number of possible co-ordinates for graphic representation has always been, and always must be, insufficient to express many facts which are shown mathematically; while, without graphic representation, the involved nature of mathematical expression often fails to facilitate and promote research. The coming into use, therefore, of the fourth co-ordinate, permitting representation by four variables, marks but the beginning of some lines of research which could not well advance without this aid.

A STUDY of the ore to be treated should be the first step in deciding on a machine for crushing or grinding. Coarse crushing is practically confined to the jaw and the gyratory crushers, the large-size jaw type being often employed in large installations as a primary crusher, followed by the gyratory type for secondary reduction. In small plants where mine-run ore is reduced in a single step, either of these machines will do the work. In intermediate and fine grinding, various machines are used. The relative merit of the different types will be governed in no small measure by the size of the installation, the character of the ore to be reduced and the final product desired for subsequent treatment. It should be possible, nevertheless, with the data available, if properly classified, to arrive at an approximation of the relative efficiency of these intermediate and fine grinders. It should be possible, also, to determine the economic grinding range of the different machines. With this in mind, it will be the object of this article to indicate, in rough outline, how the data available may be classified, rather than to attempt to discuss any particular practice and compare the results with other practices. Conclusions or generalizations can not be drawn without an exhaustive classification of data; in fact, many vital points will have to be determined by additional experiments which can be carried on most advantageously in the laboratory. The expense en-tailed in such experiments would be worth while if the data obtained should lead to definite conclusions that would aid in standardizing and simplifying grinding practice.

7.4-1. Introduction. Ever since explosives were discovered and developed for mining purposes, there has existed the problem of determining what effect the air and ground vibrations resulting from blasting have on structures of various types. This problem is especially acute for surface operations such as open pit mines, quarries, and construction projects that are in the proximity of residential districts, scientific laboratories, or other vibration-sensitive structures. Because the general public is directly involved in the blasting vibration problem, it has been of major concern to local, state, and federal governments, as well as to mining and construction companies, explosive manufacturers, insurance companies, and scientific investigators. Consequently, many investigations have been conducted, both in this country and abroad, on the effects of air and ground vibration on residential and other structures. E. H. Rockwell made some of the first studies in this country on the vibrations produced by blasting and the effect that these vibrations have on structures (18). In his publications, he stressed the need for measuring the vibrations from quarry blasting in order to establish the level of vibration as a function of charge size and distance. The concept of a damage criterion for structures was developed shortly thereafter, and a displacement of less than 0.03 in. was considered safe. During the period from 1939-1942, the Bureau of Mines conducted an extensive investigation on the problem of seismic effects of quarry blasting. This work, summarized in Bulletin 442 (20) was the first major effort for establishing damage criteria for residential structures based on experimental data. An acceleration of less than 0.1 g was considered safe, 0.1 to 1.0 g was caution, and greater than 1.0 g was damage. This work

A noted ordnance engineer once said to a friend, in speaking of the production of great steel guns, " How is it ? We design our guns with a factor of safety of eight, and the guns burst." The vague way in which internal stresses and strains in iron and steel are often considered and spoken of makes it worth while to examine them, as to their nature, their causes and results, how they may, for useful purposes, be advantageously dealt with, and how, when detrimental or dangerous, they may be reduced or kept within harmless proportions. Rankine defines " strain " as a change of form or dimensions of a solid or liquid mass produced by a stress. This definition seems intended not to cover strains due to internal stresses, and it will help us in the present inquiry to consider strain as a tendency to change as well as an actual change of form. Internal strains in iron and steel are the result of stresses within the mass of the piece, some parts pulling and others pushing in resistance to them; or, in other words, some parts are in tension and some in compression, each part striving to relieve itself from strain and make the piece assume a form in which all parts are at rest. Subdivision, so that each part could relieve its strain by motion relative to the other parts, would, if carried out far enough, practically obliterate strain. The internal strains we are now to consider are not those due to the stresses of the service which the piece is rendering, either alone or as a part of a structure, which may be termed service-strains, but those which originate or at least are contained in the piece itself. IN the course of the past few years the authors and their associates have had different opportunities to study the electrical phenomena which accompany the oxidation of pipe lines. The causes of such phenomena are very similar to those which have been described under the name "spontaneous polarization" with reference to metallic orebodies,1 and can be investigated in the same manner. These investigations, however, until recently were of a scientific and theoretical character, and had not found any important practical application. During the year 1931, however, the authors treated several industrial corrosion problems for public utility companies. These problems usually had to be studied in towns or in densely populated areas, where it was well-nigh impossible, or very expensive, to dig pits and trenches in order to make electrical measurements on the pipe itself. The authors were thus led to evolve a method and apparatus permitting the study, from the surface, of the direction of the currents flowing from pipe lines. The purpose of the present paper is to discuss the results obtained in the course of these investigations. However, in consideration of the importance and interest of the work carried out by other scientists along the same lines, a separate chapter will be devoted to a summary of the results achieved up to the present time in the study of pipe line corrosion.

Today numerous ores contain valuable minerals in finely disseminated form; and although the recovery of these fine mineral particles is generally exceedingly difficult, diminishing raw material resources necessitates the recovery of such mineral values. In many systems, the efficiency of recovering fine particles is still extremely low and often fine particles must be discarded as slimes. However, in recent years, various advances have taken place in the recovery of mineral particles in the very fine size range. In this paper, the background and performance of a number of processes for fine particle processing and separation are reviewed and discussed, particularly from the point of view of how fine particle recovery might be improved.

THE importance of the size composition of coal is reflected in the differ-ence in price of the various sizes of the same coal and in the large number of primary sizes and mixtures of sizes produced by the modern preparation plant to meet the demands of a market that in late years has grown increasingly conscious of coal size. The importance of size in the indus-trial and domestic uses of coal has its counterpart in the role played by size composition in the laboratory examination of coal. Investigation of many of the physical properties of coal in their relation to its uses requires an evaluation of size composition. In fact, the Standards on Coal and Coke issued by the American Society for Testing Materials in 1936 contains 12 standard methods of testing that involve some use of size composition. The screen analysis is, of course, the standard method of determining size composition, whether the material is coarse run-of-mine coal or fine pulverized fuel. Customarily, the analysis is reported as the weight percentages retained on or passing each of a series of testing screens, the number of which may range from only two or three to as many as 20. When more than two or three sieves are used, which is usual, the number of weight percentages obtained is so great as to make the analysis difficult to comprehend. Direct comparison of analyses made on the same sieves is hard, and comparison of analyses covering the same range of sizes but made oil different sieves is next to impossible. Consequently, a frequent purpose of sizing tests-correlation of size with properties and charac-teristics related to size-is rendered difficult.

During the course of preparation of crystals of alpha brass for an investigation of their creep characteristics, a number of critically oriented crystals were produced. In each of these specimens, Po, the specimen axis, lay near some important crystallographic direction or on or near the border of two possible slip systems. Because of the unusual nature of their orientations, it was considered of interest to deform these specimcns in simple tension and to study orientation changes and any unusual occurrences, different from what would be expected for specimens ill which only one slip system had distinctly the highest maximum resolved shear stress. Choice of actual operating slip system in a crystal offering an immediate possibility of two slip systems would be expected to be due to chance., defeet, or some inhomogeneity. Even in an ideally perfect crystal so oriented, the natural oscillations of the atoms about their lattice positions would give rise to a condition wherein one slip system would be farored over the other at the critical shear stress. In the large, nonperfeet crystals of the present investigation, slip on both systems, but in different portions of the specimen, might occasionally be expected. Determination of Orientation and Operating Slip System Orientations of specimens before and after deformation were determined by Greninger&apos;s back-reflection Laue method.&apos; Elam2 has shown that deformation of alpha brass crystals proeceds as with crystals of aluminum and of copper; that is, the slip plane is a {111) plane and the slip direction is a <110> direction. There are, however, four possible slip planes of {111) form and each plane has three possible slip directions, so that there is a, total of 12 possible slip systems in a face-centered cubic lattjce. It is evident that the system for which the tangential component of shear is maximum will function

The McGill smelter started operations in the year 1907. The smelter furnaces were fired with run-of-mine coal on grates until April 1911, when oil firing was introduced. Oil firing continued until April 1918, when the initial coal-pulverizing plant was started.&apos; Early Pulverizing Plant Various alterations were made to that plant during its operation, one of the more important being in connection with the system for delivering pulverized coal. In order to minimize coal-dust explosions and fires, the return portion of the main delivery line was eliminated in the year 1928. Thereafter coal-dust explosions and fires were greatly reduced. Pulverized coal was prepared at this plant primarily for the reverberatory furnaces, but for several years it was also delivered to the converting plant, roasters and power-plant boilers by a system of auxiliary fans and delivery lines. During the period March 29 to April 8, 1929, one reverberatory furnace was fired with pulverized coal produced by an Aero, type J, unit coal pulverizer with a rated capacity of 5 tons per hour. This machine actually pulverized its rated capacity but the product was too coarse. After certain regulations, a her product was obtained but the pulverizer capacity decreased and this resulted in insufficient coal for efficient furnace operation. Table I gives a comparison of the average screen analyses of the pulverized-coal products from the impact-type unit pulverizer and the regular coal-plant installation. It was definitely proved that this size and type of unit pulverizer could not furnish sufficient coal of proper fineness to give smelting results comparable to that obtained with the regular coal-pulverizing plant. The coal from this unit pulverizer was so coarse that it did not ignite or burn properly and thus did not produce the proper heat for efficient smelting. During the latter part of 1929 and the early part of 1930, experimental work was conducted with a 7-ft. o-in. by 48-in. Hardinge conical ball-mill coal-grinding unit, which was installed alongside a furnace in the reverberatory building. Results obtained from the test run indicated that this unit would furnish sufficient coal of proper fineness for good smelting.
