The San Manuel property is in town&ips 8S and 9S, range 16E, Gila and salt River Base and Meridan, State of Arizona. This area is in the Old Hat mining district, southern pinal county, and is about 31/25 miles southwest of the town of Mammoth on the San Pedro River And one mile south of the Mammoth mine at Tiger, Arizona, The property consists of over 150 contiguous lode claims. The old Hat district was prospected prior to the civil war, but there was little or no production until 1881.1 The chief producers have been the Mammoth and Mohawk mines, now consolidated and operating as the st. Anthony Mining and Development Co., Ltd. Production to 1936 was $5,200,000, of which 83 pet was gold.2 Since 1940 the production has been chiefly lead and zinc, and some molybdenum and vanadium. There are a few small properties in the vicinity that have produced very minor tonnages of copper ore. In the San Manuel group there are claims which have been held continuously from 1906 to the present time, and at least two churn-drill holes were put down on or near the outcrop in 1917. No logs for these holes are available, but it is assumed that the grade of copper encountered was not sufficient to encourage further exploration. A small amount of ore has been shipped from open cuts on the San Manuel outcrop area, but there is no record of the tonnage Or grade. It is estimated that not more than 50 tons were mined. These cuts, plus a few shallow shafts and some short adits indicate limited and unenthusiastic prospecting at San Manuel. In 1942, through the efforts of James M. Douglas, R. B. Giffin, Victor Erickson, and Henry W. Nichols, owners of the Sari Manuel group, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and War Production Board authorized the United States Geological Survey to investigate the property, and by their recommendation, the United States Bureau of Mines was authorized to put down a limited number of churn-drill holes. The Bureau of Mines carried On drilling from November 1943 to February 1945 Seventeen holes were drilled, varying from 305 to 1990 ft in depth. The property was brought to the attention of Magma Copper Co. in June 1944, and an option agreement was made with the Owners. Subsequently, a group of claims lying north of the original group and held by the Apex Lead Vanadium Mining Corp, and a group to the east held by the Quarelli family, were optioned. A drilling program was laid out to conform to the Bureau of Mines pattern, and drilling started in December 1944 Sari Manue1 Copper Corp. was incorporated September 1945, and has carried on the exploration program to the present time. A knowledge of the equilibrium water content of hydrocarbon systems under pressure is important to the natural gas industry. The information available on the solubility of water in hydrocarbon, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon dioxide systems is reviewed in this paper and the influence of the more important variables such as temperature, pressure and molecular structure on solubility in liquids and gases is discussed. A suitable cbromatographic technique has been developed for determining low concentrations of water. Tailing of the water peaks has been elim inated by adding water to the carrier gas stream The method is applicable for both gas or liquid samples and is effective in the presence of hydrogen sulfide. The experimental study of water solubility in methane-hydrogen sulfide systems at a temperature of 16oF has shown that the presence of hydrogen sulfide causes only a modest increase in water content at pressures up to 1,400 psia. Theoretical considerations and data on pure hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide suggest that the effect of both these compounds will be greater at higher pressures and in the liquid phase. INTRODUCTION Before transporting or processing natural gases and gas condensates, it is usually necessary to dry them using suitable dehydration equipment. The design and operation of this equipment requires a knowledge of the amount of water present in the fluid at the reservoir and operating conditions. This is influenced by temperature, pressure and composition, particular1y when certain non-hydrocarbon components are present. Field experience indicates that hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, for example, alter the usual water solubility relationships appreciably. However, an extensive search of the literature does not reveal any quantitative data on such systems. For sweet natural gases, generalized empirical correlations such as the one proposed by Katz, et al,6 can be used to predict water solubility with confidence at most temperatures and pressures of interest. However, existing theoretical relationships do not permit a calculation of the deviation from these curves when polar substances like hydrogen sulfide are present in the system. Thus one must resort to an experimental approach to obtain the necessary information. The fact that laboratory experimental methods frequently involve the use of mercury which reacts with hydrogen sulfide in the presence of water, and that hydrogen sulfide interferes with many chemical reactions specific for water has contributed to the difficulty of studying water solubility in systems containing hydrogen sulfide. In this investigation the water content of a limited member of methane-hydrogen sulfide mixtures was determined using a special technique with gas chromatography. REVIEW OF PUBLISHED DATA Experimentally determined water solubility data have been reported for methane, 14 ethane, 15 propane, 9 n-butane, 16 1-butene, 11 hydrogen sulfide 18 and carbon dioxide. 19 These studies report the effect of pressure, temperature and molecular structure on water solubility in single component gases and liquids. Plate loading tests which use surficial loading of a rock mass are employed quite extensively for the determination of in situ deformability characteristics of rock masses. The cable jacking method is essentially a surficial plate load test in which the test load is provided by reaction against a cable anchored at some depth below the rock surface. The results of the test are usually evaluated within the framework of the classical theory of elasticity to generate estimates for the bulk deformability properties of the rock mass. In the conventional evaluation of this test it is assumed that the test plate is rigid and that the embedded anchor load has no influence on the test plate settlement. The purpose of this paper is to examine the possible influences of the plate flexibility and the anchor load location on the effective settlement of the test plate. The variational estimates presented in the paper are valid for moderately flexible test plates which are characterized by a relative rigidity parameter Numerical results are developed in the form of correction factors that should be applied to the cable jacking results to arrive at the deformability characteristics of the tested rock mass.

ONE of the principal factors that have contributed to the hesitancy of design engineers to use metal-powder parts is the difficulty experienced in the determination of the mechanical properties of compacted components. Because standard test: methods cannot usually be applied in the inspection of such parts, and because adequate special test methods have not been developed, it has been considered desirable to investigate the methods that are applicable. These may then be included in specifications for metal-powder materials' and components in order that the design engineer may be assured that the subject parts possess the desired mechanical properties for satisfactory performance. It is known that direct relationships exist between usually nonmeasurable properties as tensile strength and elongation and shear strength and the angle through which compacts may be plastically deformed before fracturing. These correlations are valuable in the inspection of specific parts, but it is necessary to set up standards before they may be satisfactorily employed. Apart from the use of correlations, the number and character of the inspection methods that are applicable to almost all powder parts is limited to three-chemical analysis, density, and hardness. The last of these may or may' not be a pertinent characteristic, since the indentation hardness of many powdered-metal materials is so low as to have little significance. It is, however, occasionally desirable to use hardness measurements as an indication of the uniformity of the structure of pieces of a given type. Chemical analysis reveals very little about the physical properties of metal-powder compacts, since the unpressed powder is usually of a composition almost identical with that of the finished pieces. Density determinations are simple, to perform and have the advantage of being nondestructive in character. If the dimensions of a machine part are known (and usually they are), the average density may be determined by weighing a given number of pieces and dividing by the calculated volume of the parts. More accurate measurements may be made by the water-displacement method. , It. is recognized that mechanical properties of metal-powder materials are related to their density, but usually these relations are determined for only one type of powder, processed under a given set of conditions. Comparisons of the properties of compacts formed from different types of powders are made on the basis of compacting... pressures instead of density, and for. this reason the results obtained by using powders of different types appear widely variant.

An understanding of the mechanism of creep of metals requires an accurate knowledge of shape of the time-deformation curve. An expression is developed which accurately expresses the creep curve for a number of structurally stable metals and alloys. VAST strides have been made in the development of high temperature creep resistant alloys; however, no sound understanding of the physical mechanism of creep exists to date. Consequently, creep resistant alloys are still developed by "cut and try" methods formerly so successful but now yielding returns at a continuously diminishing rate. It is apparent to all workers in the field that if the mechanism of creep were understood, much fruitless labor could be avoided. The dirth of fundamental knowledge has not discouraged the theorists. Speculation has flourished and numerous theories of creep have been proposed. A critical review of these theories reveals that, even though there are some general areas of agreement between the majority of the workers, there are many basic questions yet to be resolved.' It is generally conceded that theoretical speculation is far in advance of experimental evidence. The shortage of reliable creep data greatly hinders more rapid progress in this field. It is essential that the effects of different stresses and temperatures on the creep characteristics of metals be quantitatively determined. Once this has been accomplished, it will then be possible to evaluate the effects of alloying additions and, it is hoped, to provide a firm basis of facts for theoretical treatment of the creep phenomenon. The work reported herein was undertaken to determine the effects of such variables as stress, temperature, alloying, and structure on the creep characteristics of some metals. Material and Equipment Nickel was selected as the base material for the current investigation and an experimental program was initiated to determine the effects of temperature and stress on the creep characteristics of this material. Since a large quantity of high purity nickel was required for the proposed program and such material was not commercially available, it was decided to refine, cast, and prepare the required metal in our own laboratory. The resulting nickel test bars had the following composition, given in percentage by weight: Fe, 0.030 (1); Si, 0.003 (2); Ca, 0.001 (1); Mg, 0.020 (2); and S, 0.002 (2); to make total impurities of 0.056. Introduction. DURING the latter part of 1915 and the first half of 1916, the writer held the position of geologist in connection with the conservation work instituted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, on oil and gas land belonging to the Indians of the Five Civilized Tribes in Oklahoma. The duty of the geologist was to correlate formations containing oil, gas,-and water, and to determine the relations of these substances in the different formations so that the conservation agents might carry on their work most intelligently. On account of the rapid development of the Cushing field, which lies in the western part of the Creek Nation, much work was clone there by the inspection force. In the course of the geologic studies a large amount of information was collected, which, on analysis, has disclosed some interesting facts worthy of publication. The report, of which the following remarks are an abstract, has been prepared and submitted to the U. S. Geological Survey for publication. This report is now (June, 1917) in the press and will doubtless be issued in a few weeks. Methods Used In addition to the structure maps showing the folding of the Pawhuska limestone, which crops out in several places in the Coshing field, separate structure maps of the three most important productive sands-the Layton (Fig. 2), Wheeler, and Bartlesville-have been prepared. Much has been written of the glamour of magnesium from sea water, the Aladdin-like creation of a huge magnesium plant in the Nevada desert using cheap hydroelectric power from Boulder Dam; the marvels of the Hansgirg process for the electrothermal reduction of magnesium oxide by carbon, and the ferrosilicon process for producing magnesium from dolomite. This is the story of the production of magnesium by the electrolytic process, using steam-electric power supplied by a public utility, in a plant at Painesville, Ohio, 30 miles east of Cleveland on the shore of Lake Erie. The story is not without interest, since it involves several unique developments that provide the answer to a question frequently asked: How is it possible to produce magnesium metal economically at such a location as Painesville, Ohio? Basically, the answer lies in making use of facilities already in existence for the production of soda ash, which makes it possible to manufacture magnesium chloride, the principal raw material, cheaply enough to offset the high cost of electric power. To this is coupled the successful conversion of by-product chlorine into a product required for the war program. The source of magnesium for this opera- tion is the enormous surface deposit of high-grade dolomite in the region south of Toledo, within reasonable freight haul of Painesville. This same geological stratum underlies the Painesville plant, but unfortunately at a depth of about 3000 ft.— apparently too great a depth to permit underground mining to compete with the delivered cost of rock from surface quarries in other areas. The cost of dolomite obviously is an important factor, since the rock contains only some 12 per cent magnesium (20 per cent MgO) so that one dollar on the cost of stone means more than $8 in terms of its magnesium content, and more than that in terms of recoverable magnesium metal. Production of Magnesia from Dolomite In the summer of 1941, the Diamond Alkali Co. was well along with construction of a plant intended for the commercial production of refractory and other grades of magnesia from dolomite. The process to be used was designed to make maximum economic advantage of existing plant and operations by tying the production of magnesia in with the manufacture of soda ash in such a way as to make use of the lime [CaO)., value of calcined dolomite. The process finally adopted after a lengthy research and development program has much in common with the old Clerc-Nihoul process, but includes certain innovations found to be necessary or advantageous. THE obligation of an employer to the State requires certain things of him as matters of good citizenship: for instance, that his workmen shall have a living wage, that child labor shall not be employed, that injuries from accidents shall not- make workmen a charge upon the State, and that the laborer's children shall have opportunity for education and to become good and useful citizens. Affairs of this kind are not taken up as philanthropy, for the officials of a corporation or a large manufacturing concern may not feel at liberty to spend the funds of their company as prompted simply by motives of kindliness; but they may spend company money on such matters because it is good business. For years, the poisonous effects of lead, phosphorus and dust have been emphasized in books on industrial hygiene and their elimination has been urged; but the more important and everyday physiology of the workman himself has been neglected. Part of my object in writing this paper is to show how our knowledge of physiology may be applied to working conditions in everyday life. In the interest of industrial laborers, accident compensation laws have been enacted in 33 States. This has been carried forward rapidly, because it has been shown that it pays both employer and employee. A further step is the recognition of sickness and disablement independent of accidents, not only because of their immediate cost to the worker and to the employer, but because continued efficiency in work and business depends largely upon health. Some measure of the importance of health in industry can be gained by the knowledge that records kept by some companies which now make this the subject of careful inquiry show that the time lost by employees, through illness; is several times as much as that lost as the result of industrial accidents. It is true that accidents frequently result in permanent disability or death, but it is equally true that illness is also a cause of permanent disablement or death. Thus the chief difference is that the loss to the employee through accidents occurring in the course of his employment is now generally recognized as a cost

This paper presents numerical solutions of the equations describing the imbibition of water and the countercurrent flow of oil in porous rocks. The imbibition process is of practical importance in recovering oil from heterogeneous formations and has been studied principally by experimental means. Calculations were made for imbibition of water into both linear and radial systems. Imbibition in the linear systems was allowed to take place through one open, or permeable, face of the porous medium studied. ln the radial system, water was imbibed inward from the outer radius. The effects on rate of imbibition of varying the capillary pressure and relative permeability curves, oil viscosity and the initial water saturation were computed. For each case studied, the rate of water imbibition and the saturation and pressure profiles were calculated as functions of time. The results of these calculations indicate that, for the porous medium studied, the time required to imbibe a fixed volume of water of a certain viscosity is approximately proportional to the square root of the viscosity of the reservoir oil whenever the oil viscosity is greater than the water viscosity. Results are also presented illustrating the effects on rate of imbibition of the other variables studied. INTRODUCTION The process of imbibition, or spontaneous flow of fluids in porous media under the influence of capillary pressure gradients, occurs wherever there exist in permeable rock capillary pressure gradients which are not exactly balanced by opposing pressure gradients (such as those resulting from the influence of gravity). The importance of such capillary movement in the displacement of oil by water or gas was recognized in early investigations and described by Leverett, Lewis and True in 1942.1 Methods advanced by these authors for studying the process using dynamically scaled models were rendered more general and flexible by the research of later workers.2"4 The influence of capillary forces in laboratory water floods has also been discussed by several authors.6 While imbibition plays a very important role in the recovery of oil from normal reservoirs, Brownscombe and Dyes7 pointed out that imbibition might be the dominant displacement process in water flooding reservoirs characterized by drastic variations in permeability, such as in fractured-matrix reservoirs. In water-wet, fractured-matrix reservoirs, water will be imbibed from fractures into the matrix with a countercurrent expulsion of oil into the fractures. If the imbibition occurs at a sufficiently rapid rate, a very successful water flood can result; if the imbibition proceeds slowly the project might not be economically attractive. Scaled-model studies have demonstrated the vital importance of imbibition in secondary recovery in fractured reservoirs. It is therefore important in the evaluation of waterflooding prospects to develop a thorough understanding of the quantitative relationships of the factors which control the rapidity of capillary imbibition. The imbibition process serves reservoir engineers in still another important way by providing a technique for studying the wettability of reservoir core samples. Such experiments are usually conducted by observing the rate of expulsion of oil or water from core samples submerged in the appropriate fluid. Several papers have been 'published on the experimental techniques involved?? Although Handy has recently published a method for calculating capillary pressures from experiments with gas-saturated cores, it has not yet been possible to deduce quantitative information regarding water-oil relative permeability and capillary pressure characteristics of the rock from the experimental results. Thus a technique is needed for studying the quantitative dependence of imbibition rate on oil and water viscosity, initial water saturation, relative permeability-saturation, and capillary pressure-saturation relations. Tars paper states the theory underlying the design of two kinds of dimensionally scaled models of parts of idealized oil fields. One of these simulates an oil well and its surrounding sand for a distance of 16 ft. radially from the well. The other model simulates linear flow through layered sands. Construction and operation of the models are described and typical data are given. The unique features in the design of the models are: (I) the treatment of the permeability-viscosity quotient as a single variable and (2) the use of previously reported experimentally developed relations between relative permeability and saturation and capillary pressure, saturation, porosity, perm ability and interfacial tension. The models at present simulate flow of oil and water only, through unconsolidated sands. They are superior to unscaled models, which may give rise to erroneous conclusions. The models are designed to study the desirability of various methods of sell completion and the effects of various factors on recovery of oil from layered sands.

On the banks of Huzzah Creek there is a roadhouse where a group of Ozark folks were whiling away a Sunday afternoon last spring. "How about some of that 'Who Broke the Lock Off the Hen House Door,' " suggested Spinny. The old man obligingly picked up the fiddle and began the sprightly tune. His long, seamed face had ruddy cheeks and a grey stubble jaw. A thick fedora was pushed back off his scraggly hair and he wore a heavy jacket. It was 73 degrees fetchin up for 75 on that May afternoon, so naturally he sweated. The Ozark is fiddling country. The natives, to whom a half dollar looks as big as a manhole cover, put great store by fiddling, along with the other fine things of life such as fishing and horse raising. On the wooded hills, 1200 to 1700 ft above sea level, there are numerous tumbling streams with plump fish, and in clearings along the roller coaster roads are long-legged, frisky looking horses. People in the Ozarks have a reputation for self-reliance. However, they are cheery and friendly to strangers. Trespassers are very seldom shot at-except if they do something wrong or by accident.

There are no formulas that guarantee success when obtaining zoning approval for mineral aggregate mining. Local land use decisions often represent the most controversial issues faced by a community. Public awareness, concern, willingness to get involved, sensitivity to the environment and, probably most important, fear of change only begin to describe the atmosphere in which local land use decisions are made. The public hearing process is quasi judicial, adversarial, and unfortunately, not designed for resolution of disputes. It is not difficult to see the need for an alternative to present methods. Hopefully, some day there will be a process that will do away with or at least minimize unnecessary, unproductive, and unmanageable community conflicts.

The organized curtailment of California oil production is not yet one year old but during its first year it has accomplished so much that it is now firmly established as an agency of economic efficiency. The principle of cooperative curtailment has been adopted by other states and it is safe to say that the principle will continue as long as the demand for petroleum is notably less than the potential production. It' is interesting to note that this same principle of regulating supply to meet demand is now being urged for other industries, such as agriculture and mining. Since Oct. 31, 1929, when curtailment was instituted by the oil producers of Santa Fe Springs and Long Beach in an effort to avert the disaster of ruinously low prices which confronted them, there has been a constant and increasingly effective curtailment program in California. Prior to that time a notable effort toward the restriction of oil production was made under the direction of F. C. Van Deinse during the early summer months of 1929. A considerable reduction of oil output was recorded as the result of this effort, but because of incomplete cooperation and the discovery of still deeper zones at Santa Fe Springs the effort was abandoned; flush field production became unrestrained and prices soon fell to low levels. This initial curtailment movement was educational and experimental. It showed all operators a way out of their overproduction difficulties and developed the principles followed in later curtailment efforts. Thus it was that only a few days after their oil had been reduced to 60 c. per barrel, the operators of Santa Fe Springs got together and agreed to restrict their current production of more than 270,000 bbl. daily to not more than 150,000 bbl. daily. The operators at Long Beach followed the same course a few clays later and agreed to limit their production to not more than 110,000 bbl. daily. The Santa Fe Springs operators chose H. P. Grimm as umpire and director of their proration program. Neal H. Anderson was chosen umpire for Long Beach. The standard molar free energy of formation of MOO,was determined between 750o to 1050o C in galvanic cell measurements involving the solid electrolyte Zr0.85 Ca0.15 O1.85. Use of the reference electrodes Fe + FexO and Ni + NiO Provided two independent determinations of FoMoo2. The data may be represented by the equation FMoO2 = -137,500 +40.0T(°K) which is in good agreement with previous CO/CO, gas equilibrium measurements of Gleiser and Chipman. The standard molar free energy of formation of molybdenum dioxide has recently been reported over a large range of high temperatures from the calorimetric experiments of King, Weller, and christensen.' Gleiser and chipman2 have also recently determined ?FmoO2 from 926o to 1068oC in CO/CO2 gas equilibrium measurements. Earlier gas equilibrium studies have been made and reviewed by Gokcen.' Over the temperature range studied by Gleiser and Chipman their values for ?FoMoO2 differed from the calorimetric data by about 700 cal. This investigation was undertaken to resolve this difference and thereby establish the two phase mixture of Mo + MOO, as an electrode of well-known oxygen potential for galvanic cell applications at very high temperatures. THE first to appreciate and foresee the value of applying electrical measurements to structural studies was Prof. Conrad Schlumberger, Professor of Physics at the School of Mines in Paris. One of his earliest practical undertakings in this line was carried out, in the field, at Fierville-la-Campagne, Normandy, in 1912. His book, published in 1920,1 still stands as an authoritative, fundamental treatise on the use of the electric current in geological studies, in spite of the rapid evolution of geophysics during the last seven years. A remarkable feature of this book is that, even then, it stressed the role of electricity in structural investigations and made public the first successful results obtained therewith. Stratigraphic studies have been pursued continuously by Conrad Schlumberger and his associates since 1912, the only interruption being the World War. The results attained demonstrate the wide possibilities of electrical exploration in structural work. This field of activity is, at the least, as varied and valuable as the search for ore. It is curious that until very recently it has so slightly attracted the attention of geophysicists and geologists on this continent. The purpose of this paper is to present briefly some examples of the practical application of the potential methods to geological studies. These examples are chosen from a number of problems solved in the field by our firm, in the course of its consulting practice. Certain fundamental points are briefly stated before the field operations and interpretations are described.

Using liquid tin as the solvent metal, the heats of solution of silver and gold in dilute Ag-Au-Sn alloys have been determined at 723°K by solution calorimetry. From the values obtained, the various enthalpy interaction coefficients in the liquid solutions have been calculated. The self-interaction coefficients Au and Ag values of 2413 and -6322 cal per g-atom in binary Au-Sn and Ag-Sn alloys, respectively. For an alloy containing 0.04 mole fraction Ag, Au is equal to 2443 cal per g-atom, and in an alloy containing 0.04 mole fraction Au, Ag has a value of —8883 cal per g-atom. Ag Au has been determined as —2650 cal per g-atom. ADDITION of a second solute to a dilute binary alloy may cause striking changes in the thermodynamic characteristics of the alloy. As yet, such influences cannot be reliably predicted and it is only by accumulation and critical assessment of data that definite patterns can be established. Solute interactions in dilute solutions were first treated mathematically by Wagner,1 who derived expressions for the Gibbs energy interaction coefficients. For an alloy consisting of. two dilute solutes, i and j, in a solvent s, these coefficients are given by: where yi is the activity coefficient of component i and x represents the mole fraction of solute or solvent. Other interaction coefficients have since been established in terms of the various partial molar thermodynamic properties of an alloy; the definitions of these are summarized in a recent paper by Lupis and Elliott.2 Mathematical and experimental studies of such coefficients have received much attention recently, providing a very useful theoretical background to an understanding of the nature of solute interactions taking place in dilute solutions. One of the definitions to arise from such work has been the extension of Wagner's treatment by Lupis and Elliott4 to include an enthalpy interaction coefficient, defined as. where ?Hi is the relative partial molar enthalpy of component i. ?Hi is related to the relative partial molar enthalpy at infinite dilution, ?Hio, and to the enthalpy interaction coefficients by the expression: Values of ?Hi can often be obtained with a high degree of accuracy by calorimetry, and, if the composition of the alloy is carefully controlled by making calculated solute additions throughout a series of measurements, application of Eq. [2] will enable reliable enthalpy interaction coefficients to be determined. Partial heats of solution must be investigated as a function of solute concentrations down to xi = 0, and, since ? values are obtained from the slope of mi plotted against x, great care must be taken to obtain precise data. The data for binary systems which are presently available often require extrapolation of ?Hi values from compositions as great as xi = 0.05 or even 0.1 to obtain limiting heats of solution. Reliable enthalpy interaction coefficients are thus impossible to obtain from published data for most of the alloy systems already investigated. The aim of the present work was to determine values of Au, Ag, Ag, and Au in the limit xsn -1 for the relatively simple Ag-Au-Sn system and from these results to gain some insight into the possible influence

Self-diffusion coefficients of silver in molten silver have been measured by means of the capillary-reservoir method in the temperature range 1002" to 1105°C. The results can be .represented by the equation D = (7.10 i 0.06) X 10-4 exp [(—8150 ± 1130)/RT]. The heat of activation agrees within the limit of experimental uncertainty with that for the viscous flow. The validity of the Eyring and the Stokes-Einstein equations are examined on the basis of the self-diffusion coefficients obtained and the known viscosity data of molten silver. MEASUREMENT of the self-diffusion coefficient of silver in molten silver was made in the temperature range 1275° to 1378°K, using the capillary-reservoir method and &"' as the radioactive tracer. The experimental arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. Silver of 99.99 pct purity (fine silver), was melted and degassed in vacuum in a graphite crucible situated inside a McDanel vacuum jacket. The crucible (4 in. tall and 1 in. ID) was protected both at the top and at the bottom with graphite shields and contained about 220 g of silver. The sample holder was a piece of graphite rod (1 in. long and 1/2 in. diam) with 4 capillaries drilled longitudinally into it. The holder was screwed onto a long graphite rod (12 in. long and 74 in. diam) which was connected to a steel disk hanging on a nylon string through a glass pulley. The steel disk kept the sample holder at the center of the McDanel tube and was heavy enough to overcome the buoyancy when the holder was lowered into the molten silver. By turning a handle connected to the pulley through a tapered glass joint, it was possible to raise or lower the sample holder without breaking the vacuum. Two such arrangements were constructed, sitting side by side in 2 Kanthal furnaces. One with non-radioactive silver in its crucible was used for the diffusion run and the other with radioactive silver in its crucible was used for filling the capillaries. To fill the capillaries with radioactive silver, the sample holder was degassed first and then lowered into the radioactive molten silver in vacuum. Purified argon gas was then admitted into the system to push the liquid silver into the capillaries. After cooling in argon, the filled capillaries were polished on emery paper to expose the top of the rod and used immediately as samples for the diffusion run which was carried out at the same temperature as that used for filling the capillaries. During the diffusion run, the samples were degassed in vacuum and lowered slowly into the nonradioactive molten silver before purified argon was admitted into the system. After a predetermined period of time, the samples were raised out of the melt and cooled in argon. The temperature of the melt was measured before and after the run with a chromel-alumel thermocouple inside a McDanel protection tube. Another chromel-alumel thermocouple attached to the outside wall of the McDanel vacuum jacket was used to indicate any fluctuation in the temperature of the furnace during the run, which was found to be less than ± 2°C for the longest run made (93 min). The temperature gradient inside the molten silver was found to be negligible. No significant difference was observed in the results obtained whether the melt was stagnant during the run or was stirred by raising and lowering the sample holder slowly a few times a minute for a distance of about 1/4 in. inside the melt.

COROMANT is the trade name of the alloy-steel drill rod tipped with a chisel-type tungsten-carbide bit manufactured by Sandvik Steel Works Co., Ltd. Other names, such as Swedish or air-leg method of drilling, are used in various localities. Coromant drilling in Sweden was the natural sequence of the adaptation of tungsten-carbide inserts to the already established routine of drilling. By the middle thirties the percussion drill had reached practically its highest attainable efficiency as a drilling machine. Since then improvement has been in metallurgy of component parts to increase life or lessen weight, in the development of pneumatic and automatic feeds, in the use of jumbos to more quickly and easily handle machines, and in changes in drill rods and bits. By 1937, drilling in the United States and Canada was done by relatively heavy mounted drifters with positive hand or automatic feeds. In Sweden, on the other hand, emphasis had been placed on light equipment and drifting was done with pneumatic bars and reverse-feed stopers. In 1938, one of the most prominent American drill manufacturers developed an air-leg for successfully drilling the extremely variable but relatively soft iron ores of some of the northern Michigan mines. Also in 1938, a comparative Swedish test, also in soft iron ore, of a 50-lb jackhammer mounted on an air-leg, against a 100-lb reverse-feed drifter on a pneumatic bar, showed the net drilling time was increased by the air-leg set-up from 51 to 71 pct, in drilling 6-ft rounds in a 6 1/2x6 1/2 ft drift. Miners were becoming scarce in Sweden even at that time and, since the lighter equipment made the work easier and more attractive, the airleg was then made use of in some types of soft rock. In 1940, for instance, a large tunnel for a hydroelectric plant was driven with this equipment. By 1943, when tungsten-carbide inserts came into the picture in Sweden, a great many of the kinks in percussion drilling with this hard-metal had been worked out in Germany under the stress of war conditions. However, only 10 pct of the drilling machines manufactured in Sweden were jackhammers for use on air-legs and only the one manufacturer made air-legs in the United States. American practice had largely supplanted integral forging of drill bits by the detachable steel bit. Canada and South Africa were using the one-pass throwaway bit but Sweden was still using the same old integral forged bit. After a long study of the trend toward simplicity

Minerals: When man first picked up an appropriately shaped stone and fastened it to a stick of wood to create a primitive axe or hammer he started down the long road of mineral dependency that has continued until today (Fig. 2). Though he did not realize it, that man and his stone axe created an extremely simple form of mineral economy. The struggle against extinction from that day has been fought with minerals. In addition to providing himself with a means to fight for survival, he also exhibited an increase in intelligence. As his curiosity was stimulated, his ability increased to provide himself with better mineral and metal weapons and tools. Today, when we examine the artifacts of past civilizations, we measure the degree of development that had been attained by the variety of metals and minerals possessed and how they were used. The metals employed are so characteristic of the level of intelligence that we have named the various stages of human progress by the metals that were most commonly utilized. Thus, mall went through the Stone Age, the 13ronze Age, the Iron Age and now has reached the Steel Age. The first period of mineral development, the Stone 4ge, began during late Pliocene time. In this first mineral age, prehistoric man began to shape stones by chip- ping off small pieces until the stone assumed the crude form he wanted. Fe-C-Si alloys in silica crucibles were held at 1600°C in a controlled atmosphere of CO and Co2 and the approach to equilibrium was obsertsed. Results were not of sufficient precision to establish the activity and interaction coefficients. Observations 012 the equilibrium provided an average value for the standard free-energy change which differed by + 1.1 kcal from the earlier accepted value. The C-SL relation at other temperatures is calculated and shown graphically. IN the refining of steel in an acid-lined furnace, it is well known that, unlike in basic refining, a very significant amount of silicon may remain dissolved in the metal even when the carbon content approaches a final endpoint. Further, it is known that the residual silicon increases with increasing temperature. The quantitative relation between silicon and carbon can be calculated for equilibrium conditions from data already available on the Fe-C-O and the Fe-Si-O systems. Such equilibrium calculations could show us approximately the limitations within which the reaction would be expected to operate in practice. In the oxidation of a bath containing both carbon and silicon it is well known that at low temperatures silicon is preferentially oxidized first. It can be shown by calculation that at high temperatures carbon will be oxidized preferentially. It is the purpose of this paper to record direct observations on the Si-C relation by means of experiments carried out in an atmosphere of carbon monoxide for Fe-C-Si alloys contained in silica crucibles. When such a system is brought into equilibrium, at a fixed temperature, the composition of the liquid metal is governed by the following equations: Both K1 and K2 are known with a fair degree of accuracy, and may be calculated from the tabulated In general the percentage of CO2 is extremely small compared to that of CO and in the experiments to be described the partial pressure of the latter was generally only slightly below 1 atm. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The induction furnace employed was the same as that described by Rist and chipman' and by Fuwa and chipman.2 It was modified slightly in view of the change from alumina to silica crucibles. The small silica crucible was surrounded by a thin susceptor of molybdenum sheet which in turn rested inside a zirconia crucible. Since the zirconia was subject to breakage, it was supported inside an alumina crucible. The charge consisted of 30 to 35 g of electrolytic iron along with the required amounts of refined silicon and graphite to produce a melt of required composition. Purified carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide were passed into the furnace through carefully calibrated flow meters. Two separate and independent series of experiments were carried out. In Series I (D.H.K.) the melt was held in the furnace at 1600°C for periods of time up to 6 hr. Samples were taken at intervals in silica tubes and were analyzed for carbon and silicon. The results of the last one or two samples taken from each experiment and the direction in which equilibrium appeared to be approached are shown in Table I. In Series II (T.F.) the silica crucibles were of less satisfactory strength and the melts were held at 1600° C for periods of only 2 to 4 hr. In heats number 29 to 45 inclusive, the metal was cooled in the furnace and the ingot itself served as a sample for analysis. In heat 46 and all subsequent heats, samples were withdrawn in silica tubes at the termination of the heat, and these samples were analyzed. The results of all of these experiments in which equilibrium appeared to be approached are listed in Table II.
