Acid mine-water drainage is a serious problem with many mines in the Tri-State zinc and lead mining district. Particularly is this true when large volumes must be considercd in unwatering old mines that have refilled with water which has dissolved the products of oxidation and has become chalybeate in character. The experiences discussed in this paper have to do specifically with the unwatering of a comparatively small area west of the town of Baxter Springs, Kans., where the pumping job was complicated by water of this type and where the extremely high sulphate content particularly effected that phase of mine drainage having to do with stream pollution. Location, Geology and History The Baxter Springs area of the Tri-State mining field is situated just west of the town of Baxter Springs and is a northeasterly extension of the main mineralized zones of the Oklahoma part of the district (Fig I). The mining area is traversed with well defined shear zones which provide easy circulation of ground waters and the ore bodies are found along these shear zones as localized enrichments wherever the structural conditions are favorable (Fig 2). The ore-bearing strata is Mississippian with an overlain capping of shale of Penn- sylvanian age. This shale strata carries much pyrite and marcasite at its base and undoubtedly was a contributing factor to the subsequent high iron content of the water. The area originally contained a sulphide water which discharged as an artesian flow in springs within the town and gave Baxter Springs its name. These springs were famed for many years for their mineral water. This original sulphide water was first removed about 1917 and active mining was carried on west of the town during subsequent high metal price periods. Many small mines were opened, with each localized enrichment becoming a separate mine. During the depression mining ceased and all mines in the west Baxter area were allowed to flood. No serious effort was made to again unwater until higher prices caused from the demand for metal for World War II once more focused attention 011 this part of the field. Original Mining Results in Oxidation As plans for unwatering progressed, it soon developed that the mine-water pools had become strongly acid in character and carried large amounts of sulphates in solution. This occurred in the following way. When the original sulphide water was removed, shafts sunk, and mining carried on over a number of years, ferrous sulphate was formed by the spontaneous oxidation of the pyrite beds in contact with air admitted through churn-drill holes and mine openillgs. These products of oxidation can be seen today in the old mines of the district as crusts of crystalline sulphates

The phenomenon called "water-coning" is that, observed in many oil wells, in which bottom water gradually and frequently sudderlly displaces a part or all of the oil production when a certain rather critical production rate from the well is exceeded. To follow in detail the process of the formation of a water cone as it breaks through the oil zone and enters the well bore is a problem so complex as to make a theoretical analysis practically impossible. However, an analytical treatment of the flow system before the water has broken through and during the time that it lies statically beneath the oil zone with an elevated or "coned" surface can be carried through under certain approximations. To present an analysis which shows the essential characteristics of the coning mechanism is the purpose of the present discussion. Physical Basis of Theory and Meaning of Approximations As will always be true for flow systems where true water-coning is at all possible, the water will be supposed to lie beneath the oil zone because of its density contrast with respect to the oil. In fact, tinder the usual field conditions, when the pay horizon is reasonably homogeneous, the water most frequently enters the well through the lower zones, but even when it enters from intermediate zones it may, in the later life of the well, displace the bottom layers of oil, thus resulting in a system wherein the oil is effectively floating on the water.

The possibility of using a semiconductor, metal, semiconductor structure as a light detector is discussed. A brief theoretical argument is presented which predicts that this structure should have pho-toresponse characteristics similur to those of a metal-semiconductor diode, but with the magnitude of the current increased by a transistor gain factor. Measurements made at low frequencies on a particulur S-M-S device agree u~th this prediction aizd shoul that significant gain factors are attainable. The current gain is substantially higher than that predicted for the metal base transistor. It is proposed that the operation of these units is more closely approxinzated by the metal-gate model which predicts higher current gains. A qualitative discussion of its high-frequency performance indicates that detection of light modulated at microwave frequencies by a S-M-S deuice is possible. ADVANCES in the technology of chemical vapor deposition'-4 have made it possible to form a S-M-S structure consisting of a thin metallic layer sandwiched between layers of single-crystal semiconductor. It has been proposed5-7 that, if the metal layer is made sufficiently thin, this structure could be used in an amplifier having several advantages over presently available transistors including higher-frequency performance. Calculations8 predict that the maximum gain-bandwidth product is nearly an order of magnitude higher than that of a bipolar transistor having the same geometry. Maximum oscillating frequencies in the microwave range are predicted. Electrical measurements made on S-M-S devices have shown that, although the theoretical frequency characteristics are not presently attainable, current and power gain is obtained. Another possible application of the S-M-S structure is its use in a light detector. This structure is a three-layer relative of the metal-semiconductor diode. Light detection using M-S diodes is the subject of considerable present interest. They are known to have a short response time and the ability to detect light having a photon energy below the semiconductor bandgap. In this paper, the mechanism by which S-M-S photocurrent is generated is discussed. An expression is derived which shows that the response characteristics are similar to those of a M-S diode, but that the magnitude of the current is increased due to the transistorlike behavior of the device. The results of low-frequency response measurements on a particular S-M-S structure are presented. These agree with the theoretical predictions and show that significant gain factors are attainable. A qualitative discussion of the high-frequency characteristics is presented which predicts that detection of light at microwave frequencies by a S-M-S device is possible. THEORY In this discussion, the photocurrent, iT, measured across terminals attached to the semiconductor emitter and collector layers is related to the current pho-toemitted from the metal base layer. The latter will be referred to as the primary photocurrent. The behavior of the primary photocurrent is determined by the characteristics of the two metal-semiconductor diodes. The diode photoemission is illustrated in Fig. 1, which shows the emitter and collector potential barriers. The metal thickness has been greatly exaggerated. As will be discussed later, the actual barrier shape can be much more complex, but this diagram illustrates the essential features of the photoemission process. The role of the filter medium in continuous-vacuum filtration and the special circumstances which influence the resistance to flow through the porous cake and filter cloth are discussed. Due to negative pressure differential, gas bubbles evolve in the slurry, constrict passages in the filter cake and medium, and further restrict flow through the tortuous channels. Filtration is a liquid-solid separation process taking place at a porous medium under a pressure differential. The liquid passes through the medium; the solids are retained on the medium as a partially dewatered cake. Filtration is far from a simple process and has been described in terms ranging from "complex" to "subtle." Because of the many variables involved, no unified filtration theory has been developed, and the filtration process is still considered very much an art. In industrial filter design, basic relationships, whether derived for idealized conditions or developed empirically, are usually adapted to suit local conditions. In the mining industry where continuous-vacuum filtration is the main dewatering process, the physical state of the concentrates and the relatively low pressure differentials permit the assumption that the cakes are noncompressible, an assumption which leads to the use of theoretically sound rate equations. Notwithstanding this simplification, there are other problems, unique in the application of vacuum to dewatering, and until now completely ignored, which demand special attention. The basics of filtration involve the capture of solids on, while permitting the flow of liquid through, a porous layer of cake and cloth. Flow is determined by the structure of the solids which make up the cake and the particles permanently attached to the cloth. The problem of this structure, essentially one of solid geometry, has been considered insoluble by Hatscheckl as early as 1907 and by Freshwater as recently as 1967. Since cake structure is determined by the slurry parameters, that problem is far too large for inclusion in this study. For theoretical considerations, uniform buildup of the filter cake must be assumed; and for efficient practical operation, the resistance of the medium must be kept constant over long periods. The latter can be achieved by careful selection of the filter cloth, since the greatest part of the total filtration resistance will develop at the cake-cloth contact. This paper discusses the role of the filter medium in continuous vacuum filtration and the special circumstances which influence the resistance to flow through the porous cake and the filter cloth.

The paper is a summary of information on Canadian deposits of uranium and thorium up to the end of 1948, prepared by geologists of Eldorado Mining and Refining Ltd. and by the specialist on uranium deposits for the Geological Survey of Canada. The paper contains a history of Canadian uranium and thorium discoveries, a working classification of the deposits, fairly detailed descriptions of the Eldorado mine and of properties in northern Saskatchewan, and shorter accounts of several other discoveries.

Extensive research, ,development and plant application work has been done on automatic control systems for wet grinding and sulphide flotation circuits during the past twenty years. The result is that there is a good understanding of the process mechanisms, the effects which changes in different variables have on these processes, the procedure for design of control systems to satisfy particular objectives and the problems in the implementation of control systems. There is also an appreciation of the problems which are still to be solved. These are reviewed briefly in this paper. Other processes used for the beneficiation of fine particles have been studied in lesser detail. The control of dry grinding, coal flotation and gravity separation are mentioned briefly in this paper.

The dictionary defines 'jargon' as "barbarous or debased language ". This description does not suffice. Quiller-Couch has said, it is "a kind of writing which, from a superficial likeness, commonly passes for prose in these days, and by lazy folk is commonly written for prose, yet actually is not prose at all ". The two main vices of jargon, he says, are "that it uses circumlocution rather than short straight speech", like the Babu who reported his mother's death by saying: "Regret to inform you, the hand that rocked the cradle has kicked the bucket ". Its other chief vice is that "it habitually chooses vague woolly abstract nouns rather than concrete ones", like the newspaper statement, "He was conveyed to his place of residence in an intoxicated condition", instead of saying, "He was carried home drunk". Jargon is "an infirmity of speech", it is not journalese, but akin to it. "Like respect- ability in Chicago, jargon stalks unchecked in our midst" and renders much technical writing ridiculous. It deals in periphrasis instead of going straight to the point, it loves the abstract rather than the concrete, it dabbles in words of sound rather than of meaning. Avoid it, despise it, if you purpose earnestly to write well. "In literature as in life he makes himself felt who not only calls a spade a spade but has the pluck to double spades and redouble." * Jargon is rampant in technical publications. Catalogues and other advertisements are conspicuous offenders, but with these the critic is not concerned, except in so far as such 'write-

To modern civilization the platinum metals are of inestimable value. Their distinctive properties, both physical and chemical, render them indispensable in an age in which the processes of the laboratory are becoming an essential part of the daily life of the world. Generally, their function, though vital to particular processes, is not spectacular, and so remains unknown to all except the operators. Early Methods of Manufacture The properties of platinum were recognized as of prime importance for scientific work at a very early date, probably between 1750 and 1760. The difficulty of making articles from it seemed almost insurmountable, because no means of attaining the temperature necessary to melt it were known at that time. It is true that solid platinum could be obtained by fusing the metal with a more volatile metal such as arsenic, which was subsequently driven off by baking, but such a method, at its best, would give only a very brittle product, which was totally unsuitable for the purposes for which it was intended. Little, if any, progress could be made until it was discovered that platinum sponge, heated to white heat and hammered in an iron or clay mold, would metallize and retain the shape of the mold. This was a process that could not be wholly satisfactory but from it developed the method of pressing the sponge in a mold and forging it at white heat into wire or sheet. At present a somewhat similar process must be used for fabricating articles of tungsten, molybdenum and other metals of high fusing point, as with these metals we face today the same problems that the scientists of the eighteenth century encountered with platinum, but possibly the next significant advance in the metallurgy of these metals will be the devising of means to melt and cast them. TO some extent this method of preparing platinum has survived, particularly in Europe. There are one or two objections to it, but they are not serious, as they can be surmounted with proper precautions. In the first place, the material is spongy and its millions of cavities contain entrapped air. Unless this is removed by thorough forging above 1000" C. the resultant sheet shows blisters. AS these annual occasions in honor of Henry Marion Howe continue through the years: there is progressively less likelihood that the lecturer will have had personal knowledge of Dr. Howe. The present speaker is one of those who unfortunately had no opportunity to come under the inspiring presence of this great metallurgist. A review of Howe's work shows it to cover a comprehensive range of interests and to evidence an impressive richness of detail. Not only was Howe at home in the laboratory, but he was familiar with the processes of iron and steel making and had a real understanding of them. His writings include much that is descriptive of processes with a wealth of material that is becoming of increasing historical value. He recorded his studies of the theoretical aspects of processes and published at least two process classifications, one in 1890 that was lengthy and somewhat theoretical, and a second in 1906 that was more of a practical listing. Wide as Howe's field of interest was, it is significant of the circumstances of his time that he gave- little consideration to raw materials or to their effect on iron and steel making processes. In 1933, Waterhouse, Howe lecturer for that year, presented a descriptive summary of the major steel making processes, and in 1946 Joseph discussed the blast furnace process. Otherwise Howe lectures have not dealt with processes as major subjects. In today's lecture, with no effort to describe the mechanical arrangements of iron and steel making facilities, it is proposed to examine the essential technological elements of the processes, to explore the inter-relation of these elements, and particularly to seek recognition and understanding of those factors which determine why certain processes are or are not used. The discussion of this lecture will deal with the major well-known large tonnage processes, with only such attention to processes of minor tonnage and special character as may be warranted for explanation by contrast. Subject to the errors of generalization and the shortcomings of condensation involved in presentation limited to a single hour, it is proposed to examine broadly but intensively those operations which convert raw materials into steel. It is an innovation for a Howe lecturer to discuss the raw materials of the iron and steel industry, but the changing circumstances of passing years intensify the influence of raw materials on processes and require the metallurgist to be alert for the process adjustments that may become advisable or mandatory. For a half century the metallurgical processing of iron and steel has followed a surprisingly straight path, but this does not necessarily mean that there are no curves in the road ahead. For many years the occurrence of gold in the Coeur d'A1ène region had been rumored among the pioneers of the Northwest. It is stated that as early as 1853 gold was discovered in this district by Donelson, of the Stevens expedition, but the hostility of the Indians prevented prospecting. In 1858, when Lieutenant John Mullan surveyed the military road across the Bitter hot mountains, the members of his expedition, most of whom had mined in California, noticed sundry outcrops of good-looking quartz, and some of them actually found gold, as is recorded in a letter that Mullan wrote, from Washington, in 1884. The first successful prospector in the Coeur d' Alène was Tom Irwin, who worked a quartz vein on the Mullan road in the spring of 1879. Two years later he met A. J. Prichard, who was engaged in the lumber business; he told him what he thought of the chances of placer mining in the upper reaches of the Coeur d7AlBne river. This was in 1881. Prichard became keenly interested, and himself found gold on several creeks, one of which is now known by his name, at a place close to the site of the town of Murray.* In 1883 Prichard located a number of claims, and shortly afterward he wrote a letter to the members of a Liberal League to which he belonged, inviting them to "secure the lion's share" of the mineral wealth he had uncovered. His letters caused a stampede from Montana and Colorado, and from South Dakota also, to the Coeur d'Alène gold belt in the summer of 1883. The development of solvent extraction processes over recent years has led to their application on an increasing scale in metal extraction plants. The author's company has recently been awarded a contract for the design of the world's largest solvent extraction plant based on pump-mix mixer-settlers. The plant is designed to extract copper from a leach liquor and has an aqueous throughput of 12,000 imperial gpm. The design is based largely upon data obtained from the company's own research laboratories, where work has been undertaken on mixer impeller design, baffle design. settler area, organic entrainment recovery, etc. Investigations have been conducted into the effects of mixer impeller speed, recirculation rates, phase continuity, phase ratio, etc., on extraction efficiency, settler area, and organic entrainment losses. The implications of the results of this work on the design of a large plant using pump-mix mixer-settlers are discussed and the techniques used in overcoming certain scaling problem are outlined.

Low-temperature measurements of photolumines-cence were used to evaluate the progvess in materials development. Variation of the impurity type, impurity concentration, and method of growth were used to clarify the chemical origin of defects in GaAs. Melt-g~ozun, epitaxial vapor-, and solution-grown samples were studied. A comparison of measurements at 77" and 20°K shows that more defects can be observed at the lower temperature. Th'vee residual defects were identified in relatively pure GaAs. These were: silicon, copper, and a gallium vacancy-donor complex. Solution growth from a gallium solution inhibits the formation of the latter two. Eleven defects were studied and the "optical" activation energy of some of these, namely, silicon, cobalt, and chromium, has not been reported in the literature before. THE discovery of the injection laser in 1962 prompted extensive measurements of the photoluminescence of GaAs. The measurements were made at 77°K on GaAs doped with shallow impurities at various doping levels and compared with electroluminescence1'2 and absorp- tion data.374 In addition, lower-temperature studies were made on relatively pure GaAS' and on GaAs doped with oxygen,5'" manganese,' and copper.' The observation of defects* in GaAs with photolu- *The word "defects" ~efers to both chemical impurities and native defects. minescence at low temperatures makes photolu mines-cence an invaluable tool in evaluating the progress in materials development. The only previous evaluation was done at 77°K when solution-grown and melt-grown GaAs were compared.O No identification of defects was made but it was shown that some of the deep-level luminescence seen in melt-grown GaAs was absent in solution-grown GaAs. The present work extends the comparison of preparation techniques to lower temperatures and to a study of epitaxial vapor-grown GaAs. It is particularly valuable for thin epitaxial layers since they cannot be analyzed by conventional analytical techniques. In addition, by varying the impurity type and impurity concentration the chemical origin and nature of defects in GaAs was demonstrated. Eleven defects were studied in all. Three of the defects were identified as residual defects which often contaminate GaAs prepared from the melt and the vapor. Only one such defect was observed in GaAs grown from a gallium solution and this was identified as silicon.

Within the Northern Pennine Orefield, England, intersections of fluorite veins are generally richest in ore, and their recognition enables investigation of the ore potential of the intersecting bodies. A method, based on routine analysis of fluorite for yttrium, has been used with success in mines of the district to predict the location of intersections in partially developed fluorite-bearing ore bodies. This short note is intended as a brief introduction; the details of United Kingdom applications are to be published at a later date. Geology The Northern Pennine Orefield is the second largest fluorspar-producing region in Britain. The associated minerals galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, barite, and witherite have all been extensively worked in the past but, with the exception of a single barytes mine, all of these operations are now abandoned. Galena alone is recovered as a byproduct of fluorspar beneficiation. At the present time two companies are producing about 38,000 tpy of fluorspar from high grade vein ore bodies, and a number of concerns are actively prospecting in old lead workings. The mineralization is localized in veins and replacement flats within favorable lithologies in an alternating limestone, sandstone, shale sequence. Since the thickness of individual beds is not great (generally less than 20 m), vein bodies tend to be ribbon-shaped, with length greatly exceeding width and height (Dunham). They thus present difficult exploration targets for conventional diamond drilling techniques. Ore grade varies greatly along the veins, which can change rapidly in character from mineral stained fault gouge to massive mineral bodies up to 10 m in width. It has been known for a very long time that the richer ore bodies tend to be associated with vein intersections in favorable beds. It is assumed that vein fissure intersections provided vertical channelways through which hot ore-bearing brines were able to ascend from deeper cavities in the sequence. Thus investigation of intersections at other horizons generally yields further ore bodies. Technique The relative concentration of yttrium in fluorite is a good indicator, in the North Pennines, of the direction of flow of mineralizing fluids. In all of the ore bodies so far studied in detail in this region, the concentration of yttrium increases markedly in the direction of vein intersections that are believed to have acted as feeder zones to the remainder of the bodies. The reason for this relationship is probably connected with the degradation of soluble rare earths-fluoride complexes by the changes in various physicochemical parameters of the hydrothermal fluids as they entered the ore body cavities from the feeder zones. The simultaneous release of free fluoride ions also contributed to the increased ore values in these intersection zones. Yttrium values in fluorite taken from a longitudinal traverse of the western ore body, Redburn mine, Rookhope, are plotted in [Fig. 1.] The position of a major vein branch and three cross veins are clearly indicated by yttrium maxima. The cross veins themselves contain up to 2.5 m of low grade fluorspar ore. The exact positions of B and C were unknown previous to the geochemical survey. Similar results have been obtained for several other veins and ore bodies in the area. Clean fluorspar was collected as bulk samples from within 300 mm of the vein wall and, since the vein infilling is simple, with mineral growth from the walls inward, analyses of the samples are considered comparable along the length of the ore body. Laboratory tests showed that at elevated temperatures a reaction takes place between all metal hydroxides and clay muds, which results in a thickening or solidifying of the mud, the extent of which depends on the nature of the ingredients. Calcium hydroxide gave the strongest solidification whereas barium hydroxide only caused a mild thickening, indicating that the use of barium hydroxide muds instead of lime muds would be a good way of preventing high-temperature solidification. It was found possible to prepare barium mud in the laboratory with caustic soda and a thinner in the same manner as lime muds, and these barium muds had the same or better toleration of high solids content, resistance to salt contamination, and low gel strengths as the corresponding lime muds. Three field trials have been made with barium mud. The principal difficulty encountered was in determining the correct proportions of the tourly treatments required to maintain low gel strengths. A satisfactory systern was finally developed, and low gels were maintained throughout the third test. The wells on which the trials were made were not carried deep enough to test the resistance to solidification adequately, but oven tests at 350°F were made periodically and no tendency to solidification was noted except immediately after severe cernent contamination had introduced excessive amounts of calcium into the system. Although barium hydroxide costs considerably more than lime, the total mud costs were as low, and on the last well significantly lower, than the average cost of lime mud wells drilled in the vicinity. INTRODUCTION The advantages of repressing dispersion and hydra-tion of clay cuttings carried in the mud, particularly when drilling through thick clay formations, are well recognized. This repression is generally achieved by the use of lime, and lime muds have in consequence the desirable characteristics of high toleration of solids, low thixotropy, and good resistance to contamination. They have, however, the disadvantage of high-temperature solidification. This phenomenon has been described in detail by Gray et al, who have shown that it is the result of a chemical reaction between the hydroxides and the clay minerals. The work described in this paper was undertaken to find a substitute for lime which would not cause this solidification. LABORATORY EXPERlMENTS The principal positive requirement for a substitute for lime is that it should repress the hydration and dispersion of clay. It is well known that monovalent cations promote hydration while polyvalent cations repress it. Therefore, a few representative polyvalent salts and hydroxides were tested to determine whether they could be used as substitutes for lime. Their efficiency at repressing hydration and dispersion was measured by means of the clay-volume test. It has been shown elsewhere' that this test is a good measure of degree of dispersion of clay in suspension and that hydration accompanies and correlates with dispersion, so that measuring one measures the other. The test is made by centrifuging a 1:100 mixture of mud and 1-N NaCl and observing the volume of sediment—the greater the volume, the greater the dispersion. Because, to the writer's knowledge, no accurate separate figures ever have been kept of the production and value of the Pittsburgh coal bed, the states will be considered separately. Pennsylvania Accurate figures are obtainable for Pennsylvania for recent years because recent reports of the Pellnsylvania Department of Mines show the production from each mine and the bed worked at each mine. For recent years, therefore, it is only necessary to list the mines working in the Pittsburgh bed and add up their production. The value was obtained by treating each county separately, applying the average price for the county to the production of Pittsburgh coal in that county. OIL-FIELD waters enter into many underground problems with which the petroleum engineer has to deal. Whether the problem is one of infiltration or natural encroachment, it is always desirable to determine the source of the water before commencing repair or remedial work. The usual mechanical tests for determining the source of extraneous water in wells are slow and expensive. An excellent means for the identification of oil-field waters may be afforded by their chemical characteristics when the chemical character of waters from the various sands has been established, by careful sampling and analysis cautiously interpreted. In the Salt Creek field, Wyoming, a fairly high degree of efficiency has been attained in the controlof field operations by utilizing the information afforded by the analysis. All of the operating companies appreciate this means of identifying waters, with the result that water-sampling has become general practice. Most of the chemical work dealing with Salt Creek waters has been done since the laboratories of the Midwest Refining Co. and the U. S. Geological Survey, were established in the field; the former in 1922, the latter in 1924. A spirit of cooperation has existed between the company and the government personnel by which many of the data for this paper were made available.

The investigation presented in this paper was performd to develop a relationship between the dewpoint pressure of a hydrocarbon reservoir fluid and its composition, temperature and characteristics of the heptanes-plus fraction. This is part of an over-all program to develop correlations for the essential properties of reservoir fluids with the composition, temperature and pressure. In all, 579 dewpoint pressures, determined experimentally on 480 different condensate systems along with their compositions and temperatures, were obtained from the literature and from previously unpublished sources. Compositions were expressed in terms of mol fractions of methane through heptanes-plus, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, and the molecular weight and specific gravity of the heptanes-plus fraction. Distribution of the samples assured a good representation of most of the major oil-producing areas in the world. A multiple regression analysis program written for the IBhl 7094 digital computer was used to compare numerous equations and to calculate their coefficients. The final equation containing 11 coefficients resulted in an average absolute deviation of 7.4 percent for all the samples. Segregation of data on the basis of one or more variables did not materially improve the results. The correlation developed is useful in predicting the dewpoint pressure of condensate reservoir fluids from variables normally measured in the laboratory. INTRODUCTION In any discussion of the dewpoint of hydrocarbon mixtures, it should be noted that there are two kinds of dewpoints which must be distinguished. The first type, or normal dewpoint, usually occurs at low pressures as dry gas is compressed to the point where liquid first forms. The second type, sometimes called the retrograde dewpoint, occurs when a gas mixture containing heavy hydrocarbons in solution is depressured until a liquid is formed. The first type, as applied to condensate mixtures, would normally be below atmospheric pressure and would be of no interest in reservoir performance. The second type is of great significance in interpreting reservoir behavior and is the property referred to throughout this paper. Laboratory measurement of dewpoints is laborious, expensive and subject to many errors, and it is desirable to find a reasonably accurate method to predict dewpoint pressures from the composition and other readily available properties normally measured on the fluids. A possible method of calculating dewpoint pressures would be to employ a set of equilibrium ratios (K-values). 1 However, the K-values themselves depend on composition as well as temperature and pressure; presently their use adds nothing to the accuracy of predicting dewpoints. If future correlations provide a significantly better method of estimating K-values for heavy hydrocarbons, they may be of greater use. REVIEW OF LITERATURE In 1944, Olds, Sage and Lacey 2 studied the behavior of fluids from the Paloma field. Properties of seven mixtures were studied at temperatures ranging from 100 to 250 F and at pressures up to 5,000 psia. From the information obtained, the influence of composition and temperature upon the dewpoint was determined. It was found that removal of the intermediate molecular weight components from the mixture resulted in considerable increases in the dewpoint pressures. Results indicated that the effect of changes in temperature was relatively minor when compared with the effect of modifying the mixture by removing the intermediate components. Thus, removal of propane and butanes resulted in an increase in dewpoint pressure more than 10 times greater than a change in temperature from 100 to 250 F. The authors stated that althouah

At the Seventh International Congress of Applied Chemistry I presented a paper,' The Assay and Valuation of Gold-Bullion, in which are briefly mentioned a few illustrations of different methods of sampling gold-bullion, particularly cyanide-bars. Since then I have carried on an extensive investigation upon the sampling of gold-bullion in relation to its effects upon the assay-results, in connection with the statement of accounts between the smaller assay-offices of the United States which purchase gold-bullion and the mints where the purchases are re-deposited. Under the name of gold-bullion are included metals of widely different composition. We may have practically pure metal, 999.75 fine or even more in gold; alloys of .gold and silver with only trifling amounts of base metal; alloys of gold and copper with trifling amounts of other metals; ternary alloys of gold, silver, and copper, or gold, silver, and lead; and most complex alloys of from five to eight or more constituents of ordinary occurrence, besides some of the rarer metals occasi'onally. In any one or all of these classes we may have one or more of the metalloids, which may add to our difficulties. Of course, with metal 999.75 fine in gold there is only slight opportunity for different samples to differ in fineness, but on such fine metal we expect the assays to agree very closely, and the sampling must be done with the utmost care. When possible, dip- or granulation-samples of the molten metal should be taken; but when it is necessary to sample bars, the chief point to guard against is surface-dirt.
