Fundamental investigations were made on the treatment of slime and the chrysocolla flotation, both of which are urgent problems to be solved in copper oxide mineral flotation. Unfavourable effects of slime on flotation are caused by the slime adsorption at the air/liquid Interface as well as the slime coating on the mineral surface. The adsorption of slime at the air/liquid interface was measured by using various kinds of slime particles. As a consequence, goethite, bentonite and talc tended to adsorb markedly at the interface. As a desliming method, slime flotation with a polymer flocculant such as polyethylene-oxide prior to the ordinary copper oxide flotation was found to be effective. The use of both a copper-avid organic reagent and an alkyl xanthate was examined for a selective collection of chrysocolla through xanthate adsorption tests, chrysocolla float- abllity tests and flotation tests for synthetic and natural ore. The copper-avid reagents used were salicylaldoxime, 8- hydroxyquinollne and benzoin-a-oxime. As a result, the ad- sorption of higher xanthate such as amyl xanthate on chrysocolla as well as the chrysocolla-to-air bubble attachment was increased by the presence of a copper-avid reagent under suitable reagent addition and pH of pulp. Flotation tests for synthetic and natural ores confirmed that chrysocolla could be floated sufficiently and selectively with a copper- avid reagent like 8-hydroxyquinoline or salicylaldoxime with its subsequent collection by amyl xanthate.

PAN AMERICAN PETROLEUM CORP.TULSA, OKLA. CASPER, WYO A field test has been made in which additional oil recovery was obtained from a previously-waterflooded "oil-wet" sandstone reservoir. This recovery improvement was accomplished by adjusting the reservoir wettability through chemical treatment of the flood water. The test was made in the Muddy sand of the West Harrisburg Unit, Neb. The chemical used, sodium hydroxide, was injected as a slug of dilute caustic solution through a water-injection well. The natural wettability of the reservoir and the chemical requirements for reversing wettability were determined in the laboratory from contact-angle studies using field water and oil samples. Laboratory flood tests with a synthetic system had shown that reversing the wettability of an oil-wet consolidated core would lead to improved oil recovery. The field performance indicates that the mechanism by which increased oil retovery is obtained in the field is the same as that observed in the lahoratory. Laboratory studies indicate that higher ultimate recoveries and decreascd water-injection requirements result when the adjusting agent is added early in the life of the flood. However, a previously waterflooded area was intentiorzally chosen for the field test so that unambiguous conclusions could be made about the effects of chemical injection on wettability and the extent of oil-recovery improvernent afforded by wettability reversal. Forces existing at the fluid-solid and fluid-fluid interfaces in a porous medium have an important effect on oil recovery during a water flood. Modifying these interfacial forces in the reservoir to improve oil recovery has been the object of much research. Several papers' ' have discussed the use of surfactants to lower the water-oil interfacial tension. This paper describes work concerned with improving oil recovery by modifying the forces at the fluid-solid interfaces— that is, by changing the preferential wettability. An earlier paper: presented evidence to show that some reservoir systems could be changed from preferentially oil-wet to preferentially water-wet by the action of simple chemicals added to the water to increase waterflood oil recovery. The process was attractive for further study because it used only inexpensive chemicals and because it called for a gross "wettability reversal" rather than for a precise adjustment. The present paper is an extension of the earlier work. Laboratory flow tests were made using treated water and oil in a consolidated core to determine the amount of additional oil recovery and the producing performance which might be expected from reversing the wettability of an oil-wet reservoir during a flood. A contact-anglc study using water and oil from the Muddy "J" sand of the Harrisburg field, Banner County, Neb., indicated the reservoir to be preferentially oil-wet and susceptible to wettability reversal through chemical injection. Based on these studies, a field trial of wettability-reversal water flooding was initiated. in the Harrisburg field. The primary purpose of the trial was to determine if wettability-reversal flooding would improve oil recovery in an actual field situation. The field trial was also an important test of the laboratory tecnique used to determine the effect on oil recovery of certain wettability manipulation, as well as a test of the contract-angle method of determining reservoir wetra-bility. The paper is presented in two parts. The first part covers the laboratory experiments leading up to the field trial, and the second part covers the field trial. PART I—LABORATORY STUDY The laboratory experiments consisted of displacement tests using an idealized fluid system and of a contact-angle study with crude and water from the Muddy "J" sand of the West Harrisburg Unit, Banner County, Neb. The displacement tests were designed to determine the effects of a particular wettability manipulation, oil-wet to water-wet, on oil displacement in a water flood. The contact-angle measurements were made to determine the natural wettability of the reservoir and to determine if beneficial wetting changes could be brought about by a chemical addition to the flood water. INTRODUCTION ACID mine-water drainage is a serious problem with many mines in the Tri-State zinc and lead mining district. Particularly is this true when large volumes must be considered in unwatering old mines that have refilled with water which has dissolved the products of oxidation and has become chalybeate in character. The experiences discussed in this paper have to do specifically with the unwatering of a comparatively small area west of the town of Baxter Springs, Kans., where the pumping job was complicated by water of this type and where the extremely high sulphate content particularly effected that phase of mine drainage having to do with stream pollution. LOCATION, GEOLOGY AND HISTORY The Baxter Springs area of the Tri-State mining field is situated just west of the town of Baxter Springs and is a northeasterly extension of the main mineralized zones of the Oklahoma part of the district (Fig I). The mining area is traversed with well defined shear zones which provide easy circulation of ground waters and the ore bodies are found along these shear zones as localized enrichments wherever the structural conditions are favorable (Fig 2). The ore-bearing strata is Mississippian with an overlain capping of shale of Pennsylvanian age. This shale strata carries much pyrite and marcasite at its base and undoubtedly was a contributing factor to the subsequent high iron content of the water. The area originally contained a sulphide water which discharged as an artesian flow in springs within the town and gave Baxter Springs its name. These springs were famed for many years for their mineral water. This original sulphide water was first removed about 1917 and active mining was carried on west of the town during subsequent high metal price periods. Many small mines were opened, with each localized enrichment becoming a separate mine. During the depression mining ceased and all mines in the west Baxter area were allowed to flood. No serious effort was made to again unwater until higher prices caused from the demand for metal for World War II once more focused attention on this part of the field. ORIGINAL MINING RESULTS IN OXIDATION As plans for unwatering progressed, it soon developed that the mine-water pools had become strongly acid in character and carried large amounts of sulphates in solution. This occurred in the following way. When the original sulphide water was removed, shafts sunk, and mining carried on over a number of years, ferrous sulphate was formed by the spontaneous oxidation of the pyrite beds in contact with air admitted through churn-drill holes and mine openings. These products of oxidation can be seen today in the old mines of the district as crusts of crystalline sulphates

Sampling of the fluid from oil wells for percentages of oil, emulsified oil, and water during the last two years has brought out some interesting facts concerning oil-water emulsion. This result led to a laboratory investigation of emulsion, which substantiated the conclusions made from the field observations. The purpose of this paper is to present the information collected, the laboratory experiments, and our interpretation of the same. In order to define emulsified .oil exactly, give its synthesis and origin, and to show how and when it is formed in the wells, the work was necessarily divided into two separate lines—laboratory work and field observations. It is hoped that this study may lead to a discussion of such points so that the petroleum engineer, geologist, or technologist may be benefited by its practical bearing on oil-field management. Special credit is due Mr. Everett Carpenter, chief geologist of the Empire Gas & Fuel Co., for his assistance and cooperation in this work. Labobatory Investigations on Emulsified Oil Laboratory investigations were conducted in an attempt to learn the composition and some of the properties of emulsified oil, or B. S., as it is more commonly called, also to demonstrate, by laboratory methods, how B. 5. may be formed under conditions similar to those existing at the time a well is being pumped, and how it may be broken down. Literature bearing on this subject is widely scattered and very limited in scope. Bacon and Hamor define B. S., or bottom settlings, as "earthy matter, inert organic matter, or, in the case of Pennsylvanian petroleum, an emulsion of paraffin wax and water, which accompanies crude oil." In this discussion we will limit the term B. S. to that heavy, dark-brown emulsion, composed of a physical mixture of water, oil, and air with some included inert matter, either organic or inorganic. THE material presented in this paper is an abstract of a thesis submitted by the writer to the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as part requirement for the degree of Master of Science. The investigation was undertaken at the suggestion of Prof. H. 0. Hofman, and it was conducted, under his direction, in the laboratories of the Mining Department of the Institute. The purpose of the work was, first, to study some of the reactions that have been considered as a part of the mechanism of the chloridizing roast, and second, to study the conditions under which nickel oxide and copper oxide may be chloridized. While the production of chlorine gas by various reactions during the chloridizing roast may not be primarily useful in the chloridation of metal oxides and compounds, it nevertheless serves a useful purpose in preventing the dissociation and decomposition of chlorides once they have been formed; for example, the dissociation of cupric chloride into cuprous chloride and chlorine. Therefore it was thought that a study of some chlorine-producing reactions would prove of interest, and the first series of experiments dealt with this phase of the subject. The object of the latter part of the work was to show the possibility of treating heavy sulphide ores, such as those of Sudbury, Ontario, containing much iron and small amounts of copper and nickel, by chloridizing and removing the copper, leaving an iron-nickel oxide product suitable for smelting in the blast furnace for nickel-bearing pig iron. The chloridizing of the copper would, of course, be preceded by a roast for the removal of sulphur, the sulphur oxides being available for the manufacture of sulphuric acid, if under the local conditions this product would be of commercial value.

A combined numerical approach is proposed for the analysis of rock-liner interact ion in tunnels under the effects of severe dynamic loads. The method is based on employing finite element formulations which describe the linear behavior and incorporating it into a finite difference code which can describe the behavior of a jointed rock medium. This method can be applied for the analysis of tunnel systems in rock, and for studying the requirements for adequate support of the tunnel.

THE small agricultural village of Santa Barbara, in the State of Guanajuato, has been the center of spasmodic tin-mining operations during recent years. The deposits, so far as I know, are unique, and a few brief notes may be of interest. Santa Barbara, about 12 miles west of San Felipe station on the Mexican National Railway, and at an elevation of 2,400 m. above sea-level, is situated in a flat valley extending east and west, and bounded north and south by broken rugged bills rising about 330 m. above the general level of the valley. Tin-mining operations have been conducted-at the Queensland mine, near this village. A small concentrating-mill was erected and attempts were made to smelt the ore in reverberatory furnaces. The country-rock of the district for many miles is rhyolite of great thickness. There are some local variations due to differences in cooling, or subsequent alteration or impregnation; but throughout the whole district the principal constituents of the rocks remain the same, viz., free silica, orthoclase-feldspar and sanidine. The latter is especially marled. The crevice and joints of the rock are frequently filled with calcedonic and opalescent quartz. The ore-formation at the Queensland mine is of an unusual nature, consisting of cracks in the rhyolite which have been filled with clay. This phenomenon is largely developed over a width of from 80 to 100 m., in which the principal fissuring follows an approximate direction of north and south. The av¬erage clip ranges between 70 to 80 degrees. Some of the fissures bold sufficiently true for a time to afford the impression that they are clue to dynamic causes, or earth-movement. A grain boundary in a metal interacts with second-phase particles, which exert a pinning force (first estimated by Zener) on the boundary opposing its motion. We have computed the shape of boundaries which interact with more or less spherical second-phase particles and have constructed a soap-film model to reproduce the shape of the boundary surface. An important result is that measurement of this shape allows the pressure, or driving force, on the boundary to be measured. We hare applied this technique to grain boundaries in two alloys and hate measured the pinning force exerted by single second-phase jwrticles on the boundaries. It is in good agreement with Zener's estimate. J\. boundary between two grains, or two bulk phases, interacts with small inclusions or particles of a second phase, whether they are gas or solid. This interaction means that the boundary, forced to migrate by a difference in free energy between the material of the two grains or phases which it separates, exerts a force on a particle which it touches, tending to drag it forward. (The movement of inclusions through metals under the influence of this force, has, in fact, been observed. 1-3) Equally, the particle can be thought of as exerting a pinning force on the boundary, tending to hold it back. Zener (in a celebrated private communication4) first realized that this interaction, and the resulting pinning force, existed. His calculation of its magnitude was crude but adequate: a spherical inclusion of radius r blanks off an area nr2 of the boundary on which it sits; since the boundary has an energy of rMM x per unit area, the blanlung-olf decreases the energy of the system by MM: this energy is returned to the system if the boundary is pulled free from the inclusion— a forward movement of the boundary by a distance r will do this—so that the maximum pinning force is Trrym.M- A similar argument can be made for inter-phase boundaries. The nature of the particle itself did not enter this, or two subsequent treatments.5,6 When it is considered, tic leifthe energyoftheb a) The boundary may enter and pass through the particle if the energy of the boundary is lower within the particle than in the matrix. Fig. l(r/). Certain coherent precipitate particles behave like this. h) More usually, the boundary will bend round the particle, enveloping and bypassing it. Fig. l(b). In doing so, it changes the structure and energy of the interface between the particle and its matrix. This means that the boundary does not touch the particle surface at right angles, as early treatments assumed,5'9 but at some angle a which depends on this change in surface energy of the particle, and can be calculated from the equilibrium of surface tensions. Most precipitate particles and inclusions behave like this. Gas bubbles or liquid drops can be regarded as belonging to either group. The progress of bypassing is conveniently measured by the angle shown in Fig. 1. When the nature of the particle is ignored, its maximum pinning force is exerted when - 45 deg. When it is considered, this critical value of is found to depend on a and thus on the nature of the particle. The maximum pinning force lies between nryMM and 2jtjMM (Appendix 1). not very different from Zener's result. In reality, a boundary between crystals has a specific energy and tension which varies with the orientation of the boundary. Furthermore, recent experiments7 indicate that such a boundary is not atom-ically smooth, but has steps on it: migration of the boundary corresponds to the sweeping of these steps across the boundary surface, like the Frank model of crystal growth from the vapor. This means that the interaction of a boundary with particles should really be considered in terms of the way in which particles hinder the movement of these steps. To suppose a grain boundary or interphase boundary to be smooth, and to ignore the variation of its energy with orientation, is to liken it to a soap film. The advantage of this soap film approximation, which we have used throughout this paper, is that interaction energies and boundary shapes can be calculated easily. We have done this by numerical computation and by using a soap film model, and have compared the results with grain boundaries in an aluminum-based and a copper-based alloy. It turns out that the shape of the boundary which bulges between particles allows the pressure an it to be calculated; that is, the local driving force an the boundary can be measured. This has allowed us to check the Zener relationship experimentally.

INTRODUCTION This paper presents the basic principles which must be followed to create a truly inherently safe mining system. The need to relate the support mechanism to be employed to the ground reaction curve and basic rock mechanics principles will be pointed out. The support system must function in concert with the deformations that are inherent in the selected mining system. Following the support selection, the mechanics for installing support must be developed. This is best done through a cooperative effort between mine engineers, mine operators, safety personnel, equipment sup- pliers, and government inspectors both state and federal. Accident statistics, near miss statistics, review of equipment used by others, geologic features, etc. will necessarily have to be studied. The goal of equipment development and selection should be to develop inherent safety by removing the miner from the hazard area or by providing absolute protection for the miner if he must work in close proximity to the potential fall of ground. Deformation studies have been conducted at room temperature on single crystals of magnesium and magnesium alloys with thorium and with lithium. Single crystals oriented to suppress shear on the easily activated basal slip systems were deformed by plane-strain compression. Compression along the C axis was accommodated by {1011} banding. Compression perpendicular to the unconstrained c axis activated {1012} twinning, and, after virtually complete twinning, deformation continued by {1011) banding in the twinned material. Compression perpendicular to the constrained c axis was accommodated by the simultaneous operation of (1012) twinning against the constraint and (1011 ) banding. Although this orientation was favorable for {1010)(1210) prism and {1011}(1~10) pyramidal slip, these modes were not observed in pure magnesium or in Mg-0.5 pct Th. However, {10i0)(1~10) prism slip was observed in crystals of Mg-4 pct Li during compression perpendicular to the constrained c axis. Fracture in all materials occurred parallel to (1124) or {l~il) depending on the orientation and composition of the specimen. THE mechanical behavior of the hcp metals is strongly anisotropic. Although several slip systems have been reported the slip is cpmmonly in the directions of closest packing, the (1210),' and this does not produce strains parallel to the c axis. Hence the inherent anisotropy. The deformation mode most easily activated in magnesium at room temperature is (0001)(1210)- basal slip. Also {1010}(1~10) prism slip and {1011)(1210) pyramidal slip have been reported, primarily at elevated temperatures.2"4 However, at room temperature the shear stresses to activate the prism and pyramidal modes are roughly a hundredfold greater than that required for basal slip.'j4 Thus prism and pyramidal slip may be expected only under special conditions of loading. Strains normal to the basal plane can be produced by twinning, however. Many twinning modes have been reported for magnesium,' with (1012) twinning the most common and relatively easy to activate. Magnesium can deform by (1012) twinning when stressed along the c axis jn tension, but not in compression. In contrast, (1011) twinning is activated by compression along the c axis and not by tension. In addition to primary twinning, secondary twinning or slip can occur within the reoriented material of primary twins.' In general at least five independent shear systems must be active to bring about an arbitrary shape change such as that in the individual grains of a deforming polycrystalline material.' Because basal slip can_ provide only two independent shear systems and (1012) twinning can only accommodate an extension of the c axis, other deformation modes must be active in magnesium for an arbitrary shape change to occur. The purpose of this investigation has therefore been to study the various deformation modes in magnesium at room temperature, with special emphasis on those modes that are less easily activated. The effect of the alloying elements, thorium and lithium, has also been investigated. In polycrystalline aggregates, unambiguous identification of deformation modes is extremely difficult and the direct evaluation of the resolved shear stresses to activate them is not feasible. On the other hand, uni-axial tension and compression experiments on single crystals may not activate some of the- deformation modes because basal slip and/or {1012) twinning cannot be suppressed in most orientations. However, it should be possible to activate all possible deformation modes using oriented single crystals and plane-strain compression. Identification of active deformation systems and evaluation of the resolved shear stresses required to activate them should be facilitated. Wonsiewicz and Backofen have recently completed an investigation of the plasticity of pure magnesium crystals at various temperatures utilizing plane-strain compression and selected crystal orientations. This technique has also been used in the present work. The seven orientations selected for study are indicated in Table I. Plane-strain compression along the c axis (orientations A and B) should activate some deformation mode _other than basal, prism, or pyramidal slip, or (1012) twinning. In orientations C and D, prism or pyramidal slip would be expected to take place. When the compressive load is applied perpendicular to an unconstrained c axis (orientations E and F) the three slip modes should be suppressed but not (10i2) twinning. In orientation G, basal slip should occur.

THIS paper is concerned with the redistribution of a second phase when a 2-phase solid alloy is annealed in a temperature gradient. An examplewhich is discussed in detail is the redistribution of carbides in a low-carbon steel annealed in a temperature gradient below the A, temperature. As a result of such a treatment, the carbides at the cooler side disappear, while those at the hotter side grow in size. In a 2-phase zirconium-hydrogen alloy, the amount of hydride will tend to be increased at the cold end and decreased at the hot end. That such an effect can occur in solid metals is not generally appreciated. However, with the trend toward higher operating temperatures in several fields, this phenomenon will become more important in the future. Actually, such effects should be rather common in the core of nuclear power reactors where the op- erating temperatures are high and temperature gradients are an order of magnitude higher than in previous high-temperature applications of alloys. The purpose of this paper is to point out the existence of such an effect, to discuss the manner in which one predicts whether a redistribution of the second phase will occur in a given system, whether the second phase will go to the hot or cold face, and how rapidly the redistribution will occur. One aspect of this problem has been discussed by pfam and Wernick2who considered the migration of a small liquid region through a solid. In their case, the diffusivity in the liquid is much larger than in the solid and they have interpreted their results successfully by using Fick's first law as the flux equation in the liquid, and taking the concentration gradient from the phase diagram. For all the cases they have studied, this type of analysis predicts that the liquid region migrates from the cold end to the hot end, and this is what was found ex-

Runding the bottom corner of the West Africa11 hump, one hovers off the coast of the tiny Republic of Liberia. But not for long-as Portuguese navigators, Blackbirders, and Farrell Line captains have learned. The ponderous swell of the Atlantic is driven by an on-shore wind that never dies. As remorseless as the Atlantic chewing away at the unbroken shoreline, is the country beyond-West Africa, where white meets black, where desert blends to bush to impenetrable jungle, where elephants chomp the foliage of young trees. This is a land from which the tsetse fly has driven the cattle, and the root crops grow big and voluptuous above the ground and are shrunken and barren of nutrient below. This is the environment of Liberia which is elbowing an iron ore market for itself on crowded shelves. Liberia is an anomaly in Africa. It was the first republic on the continent in modern times, having been established in 1848. While most of Africa was benefiting from the investment of foreign capital under colonial regimes, Liberia was going it alone. To be sure, Liberia was aware of foreign activity as hunks of territory were lopped off by neighboring French and English colonies. Today the country is about 43,000 sq miles, the size of Tennessee, which, in the language of exploration men, is a workable size unit.

DISCOVERED during the time of the Spaniards, the Namiquipa silver-lead-zinc mines in Chihuahua, Mexico, remained idle until 1916, when mining claims were first denounced. About 1922 a Japanese company, the Santo Domingo Mining Co., was formed to mine the oxide silver ore. The company built a 75-tpd cyanide plant and mined in the area for a number of years. Because of an error in surveying in one of the company's mines situated in another district, mining was carried over into a claim owned by General Marcel Caraveo, at that time governor of Chihuahua. Santo Domingo Mining Co. lost the resulting lawsuit and consequently had no capital to continue operating at Namiquipa. Later, Ray Brown and Eugenio Caballero formed a company to operate the mine, shipping crude ore to the American Smelting and Refining Co. smelter at Avalos, Chihuahua. The cyanide plant was changed to flotation with a capacity of 75 tons per 24 hr. In 1936 the property was again closed owing to labor trouble, a drop in the price of silver, and increased water in the mine.

For centuries small amounts of copper have been recovered from acid mine-drainage waters. In recent years, the expansion of copper-bearing waste dump leaching for copper recovery has established a technological basis that is rapidly converting the art of copper leaching into a science. Copper leaching and recovery from solution has become an important adjunct of nearly all copper mining operations. Leaching of copper, whether from copper- bearing ore or waste, follows well established chemical reactions commonly in an acid circuit, but where leaching of copper is to be made in rock that is a high acid consumer, ammonia and ammonia carbonate, as well as cyanide leach solutions, can be used effectively. Current hydrometallurgical processes are being applied at an ever increasing rate to recover the trace amounts of copper in copper mine waste by in-place leaching. Currently approximately 300,000 tons of copper are produced annually in this manner while as recently as ten years ago, only one-eighth of this amount of precipitate copper was produced. Where copper occurs as an oxide in higher concentrations as to be classified as an ore rather than waste, then the hydrometallurgical processes are applied as percolation or agitation leaching in vats, pachuca tanks or prepared heaps. This approach gives better control over the recovery of the leach solutions, particularly in the processes where ammonia or cyanide leaching agents are to be used.

RECENT interest in germanium centers around its use as a semi-conductor of electricity in electronic devices. It is generally believed that germanium transistors, diodes, triodes, photocells, and rectifiers will largely replace the present-day vacuum tubes. The germanium electronic devices are much smaller, lighter, and more resistant to shock, and they require only a small fraction of current required for conventional devices. Hence only a small amount of heat is given off by the equipment. This development will require many times the quantity of germanium now being produced, which in 1948 was approximately 1000 lb1 and was obtained almost entirely from zinc ores in Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. No one knows with certainty what the demand will be for germanium by 1956. It may be 40,000 lb.1 Known concentrations in zinc ores are not sufficient to

A study is made of the creep that can be induced in armco iron at room temperature by superposing small amplitudes of alternating torsion on a tensile creep load. It is shown that the creep differs from that in comparable tests on copper in being trmsient only. At the same time, though transient, the creep can produce extensions of some 10 pct under creep loads less than the tensile yield stress of the material. The creep can be largely suppressed b$ applying cyclic strain of suitable amplitude before applying the creep load and the metal thereby stabilized. At room temperature, plastic flow in a metal under steady load is normally limited by strain-hardening processes. However, if a small cyclic stress is superposed on the steady load these processes may be more or less neutralized and, as shown in recent investigations,'-4 plastic flow may continue. In this way annealed copper, for example, can be induced to creep continuously to fracture under loads as small as 1 tsi. Dislocation mechanisms possibly responsible for this room-temperature creep have been usefully reviewed by Feltner.But discussion so far has been based mainly on creep as it is found in close-packed metals initially in the annealed state, and their behavior may not be general. In fact, recent work shows that the form of creep in annealed copper is different from that even in cold-worked copper;7 the creep thus depends on the dislocation pattern already in a metal as well as on the metal itself. This paper describes the creep in annealed armco iron, tested in the same way as the above-mentioned copper. One object was to see how creep in a typical bcc metal compared with that in the annealed close-packed metals. Another object was to utilize the fact that a bcc metal like iron has a more pronounced elastic range than close-packed metals like copper and to find to what extent the creep load or superposed cyclic stress had to exceed their re-

AT MIDNIGHT of Sunday, Aug. 27, 1922, a fire was discovered in the main shaft of the Argonaut mine, Jackson, Cal. With the excep-tion of a shift boss and two skip tenders who escaped, the entire night shift of 47 men was trapped in the mine and entombed for 22 days, when the bodies were recovered. The entombed miners made a valiant but fruitless effort to save their lives. Rescue crews toiled strenu-ously day and night for 21 days to save the entombed men, only to find they had arrived too late. From the experiences of the entombed miners and of the rescue crews, valuable lessons may be learned to prevent future catastrophes.

DURING the past few years there has been considerable activity in prospecting for oil and gas in several parts of western Washington. From time to time seepages of oil or emanations of gas have been reported from various places. Several companies have been organized for the purpose of drilling, but only a part of these have actually begun operations. In certain localities very small seepages of oil occur, but up to the present time no oil or gas in commercial quantities has been obtained. In order to determine the conditions which may be favorable or unfavorable 'to the occurrence of petroleum it becomes necessary to know the character and extent of the geological formations in which such deposits might occur. In other regions where producing wells have been developed it is possible to know what formations contain the oil mind what structural conditions influence its concentration in reservoirs or zones. It is usually possible to determine those strata which contained the a materials from which the petroleum may have been derived and also the position and distribution of the more porous sandstone belts into which it may have collected. Detailed stratigraphic surveys, may even determine the depth at, which a certain known oil-bearing zone may be tapped at any particular place. It is also possible to recognize those formations which are presumably barren of oil, as well as those which are absolutely so.
